RESAIL (finalist award of 2017 UIA competition) Date: August 2017, Senior Year Undergraduate Type: Urban Revitalization Site: Jiangwan New Town, Guangzhou Role: Leader, Overall Design & Arrangement Collaborators: Zurun Yu, Jian Huang Instructor: Yifeng Wen
Introduction Based upon the deconstruction and reconstruction of an initial concept from a program called
‘Sails on Zhujiang River’
in 1981, this design tries to come up with a new architectural form that can not only rescues the abandoned site but also leads people to rethink about the value of the city.
SAILS ON ZHUJIANG RIVER A program at where is now called Jiangwan New Town used to be extremely famous for its brilliant concept call ‘Sails on Zhujiang River’, a symbol of Guangzhou. But now this symbol has fallen as it was abandoned.

Water from the river breeds lives around for thousands of years, helping to build up the civilization of Guangzhou. The ’Sails on Zhujiang River’ indicates exactly the lifestyle of civilians built upon the river. This design deconstructs the concept into 3 basic elements the lifestyle contains, and

2. PATCH RHYTHM Date: Summer 2016, Junior Year Undergraduate Type: Cultural & Historical Museum Site: Changhua Community, Xiguan, Guangzhou. Individual Design. Instructor: David Xia
Introduction Based on the condition that the spacial rhythm cannot appropriately satisfy the need of communal rhythm around, this scheme proposes to create diverse space series from enclosing to opening, and use them as patching method to coordinate relationship between communal and spacial rhythm.

Function Follows New Rythmn According to the spaces, this design builds up functions that match the new type of rhythm in the architecture. Therefore it can provide people with what they need for communal activities, and at the same time create more profuse experiences.

present relationship.
Two totally distinct cultures living in the same location, getting along with each other in a way that is negatively separate, and it seems impossible to communicate mutually. But what is going to happen when they do become face to face? The design here makes this presumption and tries to figure out a new way for the living of two cultures.

Typology & Interaction
Through combining typological pattern about skaters and common visitors in this area, the scheme tries to bring two flows into interaction from forms to functions, therefore keeping good relationship between two cultures.

About Impossibility
Interaction can happens in several different aspects, physically, mentally or more sophistically. Therefore what seems impossible for the two cultures may have been viewed in a common aspect. If people try to connect them in some other fields, the answer may appears.

RUST OLEUM Spray Paint (Metal Silver) Because the mesh used for building the model is made of rusty rebar, the process of spray painting is a significant way to repolish the mesh surface and to follow the silver motif.
Experiment 01: To achieve a branching system, an endpoint, multiple shedpoints and end points are needed.
E x p e r i m e n t 0 2 : To b e a r w e i g h t s , the branching system needs to create resistent force by bending and interlocking.
16"X16" of 42 in. x 7 ft. Rebar Sheet Mesh Flush Cut Rebar mesh provides enough stiffness to hold the weight. While the opennings are larger than expected, this deisign overlapped 3 layers of this kind of mesh together, creating 2" grid for each opening.
7X7 3/16" Steel Wire Ropes, 200 ft. Through several experiment, the 3/16" diameter wire rope is chosen for making the proper branching system.
95 pcs. 3/16" Wire Compression Sleeves As the supporting system is made of 95 wire ropes, each rope would need to combine with a compression sleeve. Experiment 03: Using wires with compression sleeves to create loops of junctures, so that the wires and the mesh can connect each other.
