Intangible Internet at Jurong Innovation District

The proliferation of data centers throughout the world has caught on in Singapore with the rapidly increasing usage of data; higher internet and streaming consumption, dominance of cloud and mobile applications, together with the importance of Big Data, Internet of Things and Data Analytics. Not much is known to the layman about the “physical form of the internet” because of data centers’ hidden and opaque nature, and for good reason – with security and cooling taking high priority. Globally, data centers face environmental issues, of which Singapore concerns with energy usage and land scarcity. Therefore, there is a need to address the issues pertaining to the efficiency of data centers in Singapore’s tropical, humid climate, given that more energy must be expended to keep the data centers cool to function properly. The thesis project focuses on the proposed Jurong Innovation District as a possible exemplary site for a new data center typology to be placed within human interaction, while making use of natural vertical convection - heat aisle cores.

Columbarium In Clementi West Coast

A site analysis into Clementi West Coast reveals that ageing population is one of the main issues, which need to be tackled in the area, as well as Singapore today. Further research reveals that the elderly are commonly misunderstood and youths form misconceptions about them. As such, the design concept is to allow both parties to come together and to celebrate life, where the elderly are allowed to commemorate the lives of their spouses or loved ones who have passed on, and where interaction is allowed to take place. The design strategy seeks to create a platform where the elderly are allowed to engage in various activities while the youths are allowed to observe or participate in the activities with them. By controlling key architectural elements such as privacy, circulation, visual connectivity, a design is conceived which combines two seemingly different typologies- Columbarium and Communal Space (an extension of the nearby community centre and HDB flats), into a meaningful piece of architecture where there are intricate spaces which allow one to ponder and develop a deeper understanding of death.

Arts Haven In Bugis

The Arts have been the primary focus of the Bugis district which includes its rich arts history, especially in the form of public art performances. With the stricter regulations and higher censorship controlled by the government, such art performances have been regulated with permits, if not banned. The nature of public art performances does not require fixed spaces, commonly taking over random walkways in tow areas; busking. This project is envisioned to be an inclusive centre for all types of the arts: music, drama, film, and art (public art performances). Smaller scaled arts spaces (for music, drama and film)are stacked together mainly for private arts organisations, with flexible spill-over spaces to enable the public art performances to take place naturally. The two-user types are grouped separately both programmatically and visually, providing a different perspective and understanding of this “ignored type of art when going through the entire architecture.

Impermanence/Hongdae Music Building

Hongdae is a place of impermanence where there is constant gentrification in the area. Specifically, there is a great negligence towards commercialized (musical) performances in the area, contrary to the vast popularity of busking. This design seeks to provide a proper venue for artistic performances to take place while maintaining the spontaneity quality of busking performances. The strategy was to make use of visual cues and relationships to create performances spaces, which serve well for both the performers and the audiences.

Water/Music

We were given the task to define space(s), form(s) and structure(s) in architecture through a comparative analysis of the space(s), form(s) and structure(s) in music. The analysis of Playlist For An Extreme Occasion - Part Six by Silk Road Ensemble serves as the basis for formally engaging with a cubic form. I had interpreted the instruments (rows) into a simplified score, representing the beats in each bar. The song is also divided into sections to describe the different moods and feel of the music. Instead of having a journey for the water to flow through, an acrylic installation requires itself to be filled with water at different rates for different volumes. When the song ends, each volume of the installation would then be filled to the brim; like how all the instruments come in at different times whilst playing different beats and syncopations, and then ending together.

Folly/The Love Playground

27

The design of the Introductory Project – Part One serves as the basis for creating an architectural folly to be located in Fort Canning Park. An assemblage of four rooms, each corresponding to specific programs (four senses), comprises the folly. Taking a small segment which represents the main part of the song (the repeated sequence) as the starting point, the volume starts to morph into a more habitable folly with different spaces to engage the different senses. Taste: A transparent tank that allows for light to enter the lower level while providing water for birds to drink from. Sight:Cubes with water continually drizzling on every internal surface. Acts as a partial screen while creating light patterns shining through Sound: A small underground space led by staircase. The sound of water falling from the sides of the mini pool directly above gets enhanced with reverberations. Touch: A very shallow pool of water which forces the visitor to walk through to get to the top level.

Because of the folly’s location and setting, it creates an ideal pavilion for lovers through the internal and external spaces, as they enjoy the view of Fort Canning.

Common Ground In Jurong East Studio Group Project

The project aspires to be a coherent and imageable urbanistic form in a highly irregular and fragmented urban landscape. Bigness and coherence is assumed, as the site is being located in Singapore where centralised planning and organisation is continuously perpetuated. The project desires to prepare for an incoming, new and restructured society that is based on effectiveness, driven by two major trends observed in the current Post-Fordist economy. Firstly, a society that is experiencing the collapse of hierarchical structures is seeing more integrated and interconnected flows of capital and information, flattening nuances and differences created by the order of previous Fordist economy. Secondly, the affective and the emotive induced by play is increasingly integrated into the production of value, resulting in a seamless integration of work and play that is defined by characteristics of ephemerality and indeterminacy. As such, this project has assumed predications through the flattening of the site and strives to accentuate and emphasize networks through connections. It is through these connections that latent activities and connections of the new society, white collared workers and most importantly the “other” are expressed. It is in hopes of this expression that it facilitates the creation of a new “language” is yet to come. Geoffrey Neo Jie Hao Studio Bobby Wong 2016 Leader

Woodworking/“Ceci N’est Pas Une Chaise” Nap Top Architectural Construction Group Project

The challenge of this hands-on exercise is to define, design and construct a timber “cleaner’s nap top” which is self-supporting, free-standing and its usage may capitalize on an adjacent vertical rigid surface. It is for the use of one cleaning aunty and its weight and size should not be a chore for her to move it around if she has to relocate. it should be stable, durable and safe for use. These aunties are all senior citizens and failure of structure is detrimental to their well-being and working life. it must give her a good comfortable support when she is seated to nap. Inspired by the easel, our group created a collapsible additional neck support (nap top) prototype which could be fitted to the common chair found in the school setting. The nap top could be placed hanging on any ledge, making it convenient to store in areas where the cleaning aunty would be resting. Through experimenting the mechanics of foldable wooden joineries, we created a useful addition to the chair. Thus, ceci nést pas une chaise. AKIID Camp NUS ID X NUS Aki Orientation Camp Publicity Co-Head

Before acting as the heads of the Publicity team for AKIID Camp, the camp committe had already agreed on focusing on making the camp not feel like a typical freshmen camp. Thus we were given the important role of focusing on the aesthetics and to relate to the more design-savvy students coming into the school while having the theme to be heavily associated to “island/beach vibes. Residential College 4 Commisioned House Logo Designs & Publicity Team Member

Before having applied for residency in RC4, I was approached for the creation of the five house logos of the college; which were named after constellations. This project required heavy reliance on the use of vector work with the aid of a drawing tablet. These logos were eventually used for the official house t-shirts for the college and also as banners for the multi-purpose hall (accomplished by Clarisse Bu). After having accepting residency, I joined the publicity team and had been tasked with a few small projects. My involvement also included assisting in the realisation of other physical tasks. Music Merchandise Logo Design/T-shirts/Posters

Apart from design work, I play drums in two bands; an instrumental math/post rock band Sphaeras and an experimental rock band Two Seas. Because of my design background, I tend to be in charge of the visual aspect of the bands as well and have been designing the logos and merchandise since 2012. The release of my bands’ EP and full length albums also gave me the opportunity to organise the layouting of the physical hard copies, especially for Sphaeras’ “Moirai”album where we decided to go for an art booklet with download code instead of the traditional CD album, following the rise of digital plays in today’s music industry. This led to the layouting project for singer-songwriter Coeway Boulder’s album “Convalescence: Getting Over the Wrong You”.
