A modernist at heart. Minimalism and Simplicity of design to allow for complexity to be defined. To give a meaning to materiality and to allow for a economical connection between all the elements, to create a space of belonging, to allow for the user to experience the space and to interact with all the small elements. My approach is to give design a modern side, green edge and minimalist and economic fill, if one had to shape it. This allows for one to create and communicate, to market and create a variations in thresholds, and push the boundaries of complexity.

Architecture a means of creating and manifesting materials around a building to allow the user to experience the space. Axial, geometric and linear form are a means of modern architecture, that allow for a common reference lines to be drawn between all elements and allow for one to experience ones environment in more than just a physical manner but also in an emotional way. Minimalism and Simplicity are a means of giving complexity to a design as Mies van der Rohe once said “Less is more. I live by these design principals

#Unity within Diversity

One should become the atmosphere within an architectural style and embrace the design and experience it in person and be the design to allow for others to relate. Identity is formed by means of being and experiencing, and social interaction if need. Giving a means for one to access their true self through architecture. Stereotyped in design but multicultural in plan. Axial and geometrically influenced, a design focused on finding identity allowing for the user to depict the function of the program the intention is clear but how they use the space is subjective. Linear progression and simplicity to form the core, modernism and functionalism to form the exterior. We allow for people to feed us information why not allow architecture to give such information subconsciously through means of identification and a complex plan inspired by culturalism and functionalism which overall is driven by form follows function (Le Corbusier) and less is more (Mies van der Rohe). Finding a balance between materials, elements, environment, man and building. Design is means of creativity but who says creativity is a means of design?

#Inspiration

Holy Redeemer Church In Las Chumberas by Menis Architects Concrete architecture that inspired the soul, gives a mean to simplicity. This also allows for the user to connect emotionally, the different materials provide a different means physically connection. The unfinished concrete allows for the a rough and harsh finish. Natural light is a means of journey within this design it gives the user a means to proceed. This gives us another many to architecture inspired by site and the existing.

Zamora Offices In Calle Obispo Manso, Spain by Alberto Campo Baeza

#Inspiration

Concrete and stone architecture, private in appearance but yet public by function, gives another meaning to glass and concrete architecture and open plans, inspired by Mies van der Rohe. Works with the site and the surrounding areas but not physically but in terms of movement and entrances. The design is surrounding by high walls “cutting it off from society but yet still providing small glimpses of the structure within by means of openings within the wall. Highlighting nature and emphasising the important of nature but yet only by means of a series of singular trees , to show its abundance within the community.

#Inspiration

Barcelona Pavilion In Barcelona, Spain by Mies van der Rohe Concrete and stone architecture, elegant and sleek design to form a combination of materials. Minimalistic design that allows the user to experience the space. Water fountain that reflects the structure and allows for more than just a physical connection but also a visual one. Axial and linear formed design based off of a strong grid design influence by the context and the surrounding areas drawing attention to it views.

To reinvigorate existing architectural drawings, that we were tasked to render and give our own flare and personal touch too. I was tasked with the rendering of Karlien Thomashoff’s “House Rooke”.

#House Rooke

It was an amazing experience to get to experiment with many different mediums to find on that would work for my design style,

# Chapel of Soul The idea of man and nature. Unfortunately there is no intimate connection between the two. A place of soul is desperately needed where one can search for one’s inner ambitions. The idea of fusion and a combination of the two elements by means of taking small parts of their wholes and combining the essence of them together to form a new concrete unit whole. When a place of soul is asked of one, becoming one with nature and ones’ immediate past life and forming a connection with one’s spirit is essential. To take the essence of a variety of different shapes, and there idealistic elements, to form an emphasised fusion between the two. A intimate simplistic connection using organic free spirited ideas of nature. A fusion of two whole’s to form a super whole.

A chapel that draws attention to nature and draws attention the horizon situated next to the top of a waterfall allowing for the water to act as a white noise emitter and allow for a visual connection with the user to take place the intention is allow light to penetrate the space and amplify the interior, the concept is also futuristic in terms of the hovering chairs showing and drawing attention to the furniture floating which enhances the concept of flight and a place of soul. The designs intension is to promote a progression and allow for the user to flow through the space as if it is water.

Flight, floating, free yet grounded and connected. The idea of one floating but yet not flying. The peaceful but purposeful approach to life and how one shall form a new connection between places. Two concepts one bridge, one whole. One uses ground and also needs air to survive which forms a link between the two words. Ying and Yang two halves working together forming an association but not changing the essence of one’s own ideas and principles. Which brings about the concept of grounded flight as an ironic idea.

#PG Bison Competition

The design was separated in terms of activities to take place. On the upper level to be a movie area to allow to public to come together and watch a movie. On the ground level to be a public interface, to allow the community to interact with the seating and restrooms. On the lower level to be a restaurant to allow for the public to have a place of retreat. These elements draw attention to the idea of private spaces within public spaces to allow the user to be at balance. The purpose of this project is to

#Blood Transfusion Center

Elasticity, a form of connectivity by means of a physical attachment. Simplistic but complex; linear but organic; subtle but exciting. One can use the idea of forming an informal link between two zones that could allow for a common area to emerge. Zoned into private and public rectangular prism, but still one unit whole. The idea of a linear elastic compaction between these zones but also still linking in a material way and emotional way to the site. Instead of a horizontal connection a vertical connection is found, wrapping around the building not in the physical sense, but in the abstracted idea of forming a simplistic link between the two zones, yet also between the west and east facades. Elasticity in a vertical, horizontal yet modular whole, forming a connection of different units but still keeping their individual elements. Forming a solid foundation on an inappropriate site.

Northern Elevation

Eastern Elevation

Southern Elevation

The design inspired by an elastic band and how it wraps around the objects that are within potentially holding them together in balance. The idea of different objects and materials being wrapped together under near on roof working together to form a balanced design. Inspired by local stone masons, to also allow for concrete unfinished and finished white concrete to be seen to allow the user to see all these different materials becoming one, the idea was to let the program form the building. Form follows function as one can says, to let the form be inspired by the function also taking into account the surrounding conditions and atmosphere of the site. To show a progression towards the building to almost enhance the building from the exterior, to let the building influence the design. To create a exterior public space to the interior private blood transfusion center.

Western Elevation

The sections show the use of coffered concrete slabs to allow for the services to be wrapped up inside these spaces and for a suspended ceiling to be housed. The design draws attention once again to the horizontal and vertical components and linear movement through the space. In Section A one can see towards the right the public restaurant this is to allow for a retreat from the center all together, The interior spaces have been thoroughly planned out in terms of square meterage, based off of the specific functions of each room. The ground floor planned as more of a public interphase and as one moves up the levels it becomes more private in plan leading up to private office above on the second level. This project was a technical resolution and to allow for us to experience a technical brief.

Simplistically Incongruous, an idea of something being inappropriate but still having a meaning and sense of purpose. Normally still used to convey a message and give a sense of purpose by forming a connection between the different elements. The internal and external elements forming one whole inside one building, going against the balance. Forming a new idea inside a pre-existing character. Basically taking one’s understanding and manifesting it beyond one’s interpretation. Creating a simplistic link that will allow for interaction and communication but still keeping its unique purpose. To form a paradox, but a unit whole within a bigger picture. The idea of internal and external spaces used to influence the greater external idea. A horizontal progression in a horizontal landscape. A complex design in a simplistic design. Using planes and lines to guide the users and allow for an emotional journey to take place, drawing attention to the views and modern landscape elements.

The design and exterior space were focus on an Alberto Campo Baeza and Mies van der Rohe technique by means of using plane and linear walls to guide the user and to allow for a minimalistic atmosphere to be conveyed. There is a balance between natural light, greenery, structure and glass. The intention was to create a private yet public space to allow the artists with privacy within there home by means of one way glass the residence can see out but the populous cannot see in. There is also a series of walls placed to allow for a interactive artist space where any and everyone can experience and express themselves, where the public can see there work, this also creates a social atmosphere where interaction is promoted. To cover the users and still allow anywhere and everywhere to be accessible. The intention of this project was to balance living and working spaces within a confined site.

#Syrian Memorial

To take all the lives lost in struggle attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean ocean in order to find safety and to find a means to memorialise them in a physical manner. To allow the people to interact with the design not just on a personal level but also by means of an emotional connection. To allow water to guide the way and give a means of direction. A minimalist link between the horizontal and the vertical elements creating another link between the living and the dead in terms of drawing attention to the heavens and the earth. To allows for all people of all ages to interact with the memorial in the pockets that have been created for the younger generation and those that are there to morn. A aqueduct system that allows water to be transported down two paths till the water drop into the memorial, the intention is to a create white noise emitted, to allow for a peaceful means of morning. A place of spirituality and being. A place of journey to never forget.

To form a link between the earth and the heavens to allow for a physical connection in the form of a name on a sandstone wall that washes away with time and to help the mourner to come to terms with the loss allowing for one to move on. A tangible link between the power of will and emotion to guide the people.

To form a linear progression of knowledge to allow those that are willing a key for success. To form a platform that they can use and become inspired by others. To provide all the tools and instruments, all they need is a means‌

#Educational Center for Refugees To create a place of learning, to potentially assist all refugees in becoming one with Barcelona. To help them as individuals to develop and become the best version of themselves. A vertical and horizontal link allowing for a simple linear walk to view all. A effective method of creating a safe and relaxing space accessible to the public but yet still private. Using earthly materials like wood to create a soothing calm atmosphere but yet brutal to promote outside exploration. Concealed by the market but yet clear to its intentions and purpose.

The process in which I took was to elevate the design with the over laying concept of creating a private yet public space. A learning center that can be accessed by the public but to also allow for the privacy that is required of such a design. To allow for users to work through the design in a linear progressive manner almost in the shape of a upside down “T going from social public spaces to through to the library and dance study more private on the first level.

Concrete cover Isometric

To create a link between materials mostly wood and concrete to balance out the design with materials that are subjectively considered to be opposites of one another, concrete seen as cold and wood seen as warm. Majority of the design is under an existing roof from the market and this was done to appropriate an unappropriated space on the site. The structure outside has a flat pitched roof at 5 degrees that drains to the water memorial aqueduct system to allow for reuse of water, so no water is wasted.

To place screens where need next to the lecture halls to buff the sound before the interior, acoustic membrane is added to the interior of the structure to remove the market atmosphere to create a more private space especially by the library where the walls are thicker and acoustic membrane is added as well. The cafeteria overlooks the memorial and an existing restaurant on site, to allow for the populous to connect but still to separate from learning to that of recreation.

First Level Isometric Plan

Section BB

Section CC

To have the design interact with the existing on site to not disturb the existing but to emphasise on what is existing there is a weekend market that expands out the north of the market which now is to be housed under the learning center so they still have space available the market is not touched as the space between the market and the market roof is 6000mm of unused space so the design slides in this space to put it simply. To draw elements from the memorial like the link between horizontal and vertical elements and bring that into the learning center to allow for a horizontal linear progression through the space and still provide privacy by means of the vertical wooden screens in the interior. To allow the memorial to influence the learning center and to not effect the memorial or draw attention away from its purpose but rather to highlight the design and enhance the atmosphere around the memorial.

A place of meaning, a place of communication, a place of basic need. A means of distribution, A means of peace and separation. To create a place to serves the people and yet allows for a peaceful retreat if need be. Tea, a relaxant to guide the people along. Grocer, a distributor of basic essentials that are required for every day use and/or consumption. A horizontal and simple vertical progression allowing for a minimalist connection between all elements on site. to allow for one to interact and become one with the zen identity and garden formed on the exterior of the design. To allow for maximum access. To make a public space private. To make a private space public. To allow for a calming and relaxing space to be enclosed and separate from society but yet accessible with ease.

To form a meaningful link between all the surrounding sites a place of belonging and purpose. To allow for communication but still to create a peaceful place where one can get away and enjoy life.

#Local Grocer & Tea Emporium

The design focus on the simplicity of the spaces to allow for the user to clearly see all the programs the tea emporium at the upper level and the grocer at the lower level. The interior space was designed in such a way to allow the double volume space open the plan and to allow natural light to enhance all the elements this is a local grocer that has a double volume mezzanine space worth of shelves with a lift that access the tea emporium on the upper first level. The intention is to separate public and private but still to allow freedom between the two spaces to create a unity between the two. Natural light is used as a design informant within this design inspired by my colleagues and there designs, designed from axial and grid lines to allow for equal spaces to form, The isometrics above are cut in such a way to show the interior spaces and to help illustrate the separation of spaces and outside and inside.

The plans above were designed with north pointing up. One can see in light grey the underlying condition of the level below that one. The ground floor is a local grocer, storage rooms, staff rooms, managers office, life and an exterior zen garden forming part of the ‘interior condition’. The first floor has the context on the plan to show relations to fellow colleagues. The first level forms a mezzanine level to the ground level taking the selves from the ground level up so having double a double volume grocer, and exhibition space towards the north of the first level. The second level houses the tea emporium by means of couches, bar, private group tasting and store as well as storage rooms and restrooms and lift. The tea emporium over looks the green strip passing straight along. The context has been shown in the middle plan to see how it reacts with the surround students in terms of design.

The section above show how the users would uses the space the balustrade are out of proportion I do apologise they supposed to be 1000mm in height. But one can still see the interior spaces and how they connect with the exterior spaces allowing for unity to created. The purpose of this project was to work with fellow students as a year to form a site that is full with many programs that compliment each other. The image above shows how it fits in with the other students works. A service core is created between the buildings as one can see in the middle image above between the buildings to allow for deliveries and waste removal.

A center that allows for the user to find there identity by means of meditation. A means to allow the user to choose his/her own journey. To create a space of exploration as a means of design to provide many opportunities for the user to link visually or physically with the design, to allow natural light to penetrate the solid elevation. To create a atmosphere of peace and tranquillity to allow for the user to be at balance and to create unity from within and in sociality.

#Meditation and Spiritual Center

To form a meaningful link between all the surrounding sites a place of belonging and purpose. To allow for communication but still to create a peaceful place where one can get away and find there identity.

Taking the idea of one finding there identity through a structure allowing them to be and see who they are. Eliminating stereotyping, discrimination, racism and any other generalised terms that are used to classify. Stereotyping in Architecture but not in the physical way but in a physiological manner. A series of Architectural Impressions that work together in form and materiality but have different internal programs. These “Community Centres” all different but yet the same, all unique and special to show give a deeper meaning to ones insides are more powerful than there exterior. Using a progression and a series of minimalistic thresholds to make the user question there existence to allow them a means to explore and to find there own path.

#Mapping techniques The idea of appropriated space/ inappropriate spaces, of a informal and formal setting, a dynamic means to identify spaces represented by the blue and green above, to show places of connection and interaction.

The means for zoning and identify the usage of space and the users that use the space the orange represents the spaces that have been gathering “junk and dirt. These spaces are zones of fifth and area of displeasure for the average user, as he/she walks through the space/s, it may cause discomfort and make the average person feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Places that make people unhappy and scared. To focus on the entry points and frontal relations with all the surrounding buildings, all entrances are there for a purpose and are there to help promote people through the space. Lighting can a form of symbolic means to help social interaction and to assist the users and public with these experience through the space/site. Everyone is different and everyone reacts differently in different spaces, social spaces are the key to a means and a means to promote emotion.

#Site Development Plan &Municipal The Site development plan allows for one to read the render and give it detail by means of identifying the footprint of the design on the site, this was the first Site Development Plan I had done and it shows all measurements and ERF numbers and values. The red is a representation of my buildings coverage and showing all existing and what is to be removed from site

The Site development plan for construction application, allows for one to read the render and give it detail by means of identifying the footprint of the design on the site. This also allows for one to relate on a construction standard. This was the SDP for the meditation centre. Please note this is the first SDP and was improved upon.

#Site Development Plan &Construction

The intention of the plan is to allow for a linear progression throughout the space to guide the user, to give a sense of the unexpected after receiving small glimpses from the exterior. A service road has also been added for waste removal and delivery space. Individual pods have been places there within the design to allow for group and individual meditation. The ground floor houses half of the accommodation focused towards the north and is zoned in such a way to show accommodation at the top, circulation in the upper middle and kitchen and bathrooms towards the lower middle and then individual interior and exterior meditation rooms towards the bottom. Service entrance to the structure are provided and fire stairs and underground parking has also been designed. The design was based off of its surroundings axes that were drawn from the existing buildings on site. And then linked with a 1000mm grid to allow for reference points to be formed.

#Plans

The elevations were also formed from the axes surrounding the site. The windows and steel rod beams were placed in such a way to optimize the natural light and to allow just enough warm into the structure, the building highlights the contours and fits into the context working with the site, allowing for the services to move around the site with ease. The form is made to be simple and to allow for one to work with the movement of land. The south elevation and the western elevation to the top of the site have allowed for natural light to infiltrate the structure.in the simplest of ways to highlight the elements and feature in the interior.

#Elevation

This perimeter section shows the connection between the exterior and interior. The exterior showing a lady about to enter the structure, with a public chair on the boundary. The interior shows one of the individual meditation rooms as the people above gave get a glance of the person below through the steel cables. There is a small window at the top of the structure that allows for natural light to move inside the individual meditation pod. The interior courtyard can be seen here as well. This section also shows how the roof slope towards the courtyard, it is not resolved yet but the intension is to collect water and store it in the basement.

#Section Perimeter

This perimeter section shows the connection between the exterior and interior. The exterior showing the ladies walking next to the steel cables on the faรงade. This blurs the space between exterior and interior. You can also see the courtyard space inside the structure by the accommodation area. As well as the basement structure, to show how the basement connects with the upper levels and how it connects with the exterior. The roof also as seen by the other section leads into the courtyard, it is not resolved yet but the intention is to collect water and store it in the basement.
