Site location
The holiday cabins project is based in Attenborough nature reserve park which is part of Nottinghamshire wildlife trust. It is a beautiful complex of flooded formal gravel pits and islands providing exceptional habitats for a wild range of wildlife. The river Trent running from south-west to north-east is an important factor in attracting birds to the reserve.

With waymarked trails alongside tranquil waters Attenborough provides an ideal place to get some fresh air and connect with nature. The park is made of 205 hectares of wood and farmland located in the south-west of Nottingham. Currently, the park offers a visitor centre, four bird hides, refreshment places, picnic areas, meeting room, educational facilities, interactive display, wildlife shops and walking trails.

Four occupancy cabin
The four occupancy cabin is proposed at one of the most established delta gravel pits on the barton ferry lane near the Coneries pond, as it has developed a mature willow and alder woodland, with the fringes offering dense scrub and thick aquatic vegetation.

The planning of the four occupancy cabin is split into two parts connected through a semiopen outdoor sitting area, which is the main entrance to the cabin. Each space of the cabin has a specific function defined by the vaulted roof each one crowned with a skylight. One of the entrances of the wings leads to the living area, having fixed window seating and a storage area opening up to a semiopen dining area and the kitchen area. The kitchen is located at the core of the plan leading to the stairway to the first-floor bedroom. The other wing enters into a passage equipped with a cosy nook place and the storage area, toilet, and the ground-floor bedroom. Both the bedrooms are designed to have the least openings to have a sense of enclosure and consist of entended spillover spaces to enjoy the surroundings.

The defining gesture of the section is the vaulted pyramid roof crowned by a square or a rectangular shaped skylight; each dividing the functions of the space. The position of the skylights was carefully calibrated to spotlight different activities throughout the day. The vaulted roofs here helps to give a varying volume to space. The spaces are designed to have minimum openings to give more sense of privacy and enclosure. The skylights are the main sources of light helping to light up space and works as an aperture to the sky and tree foliages.

Elevations The exterior is finished with Vertical Grained Siberian larch timber cladding, while the roofs with Charred Douglas to create the contrast within the elevation. The was inspired from the concept model of 20 beacon hill baptist church. This contrast is intended to complement the exterior wall finish with the surrounding tree trunks and the roof with the foliage. While the interior is finished with nobbly timber boards and is left exposed throughout featuring on the walls and ceiling.

Staircase

The staircase consist of solid walls on both sides to give a leading feeling to the upper floor bedroom. This straight flight overlooks a small lightwell opening into a balcony. The window is choreographed in a way that allows one to have glimpse of trees and sky.
Living room The living room is the central area with a cosy window seating with storage area below, allowing a panoramic view of the surrounding water body. The skylight is positioned at the transition area between the living room and the kitchen.

First floor bedroom

The upper floor bedroom is the most private area of the cabin giving a feeling of seclusion with minimum openings. The skylight is placed in a way that it lights up bedroom and it becomes and aperture for stargazing at night.
Ground floor bedroom The bedroom on the ground floor is tucked away in a dark isolated chambers protruding itself though an outdoor sitting area, giving a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, thanks to the full height sliding windows.

Kitchen area 30 The kitchen area has a low ceiling height with a flat roof. It has two slit windows allowing one to have glimpse of the surrounding and one window opening towards the dining deck.
Bathroom and corridor area The toilet is naturally lit up through the skylight, allowing one to be a part of nature while bathing. The corridor outside the toilet area is equipped with a cosy nook window seating allowing the light to enter the space and a storage area.

The two occupancy cabin is proposed at one of the most established delta gravel pits on the barton ferry lane near the Wheatear field looking towards tween pond, as it has developed a mature willow and alder woodland, with the fringes offering dense scrub and thick aquatic vegetation. The bedroom area of the cabin is located above the water body.

Planning
The planning of two occupancy cabin is simple, having a single storey with varying volumes, elevated on the stilts to rise above the undulated plot. The cabin is based on a compact floor plan having an indirect entrance through the outdoor sitting area. The plan features main living area at its core including dining, cooking and a sitting area close to each other. The sitting space is defined with a fireplace and a bookshelf. The fireplace is two-sided that sits between 39 the living room and the porch is faced with sheets of hot-rolled steel. The planning also consists of a bedroom opening towards the waterbody helping one to be close to nature. It also features a bathroom in the center of the plan dividing two main functions.

The skylight in the living room is placed right above the dining area allowing the natural light to fall upon the dining nook place. The window beside the kitchen workplace is to have a glimpse of the surrounding nature.

One enters the cabin into a corridor bridging all the functions together. The space is lit up by two slit windows and leads to the water body view. The passage also consist of storage- cum- sitting space.
Bedroom area The bedroom consist of a sliding folding window providing a 360o panoramic view. the bedroom part of the abin is placed above the water body and its also has an extended deck to enjoy the scenic view.
