The Revival of the Nanjing Bathhouse

Located in Yuerai Lane, southwest of Zhonghua Gate in Nanjing, the wengtang is a public bathhouse that was built more than 600 years ago and belonged to the Dajingen Temple. The bathhouse has been changing as a social space in different eras. Residential buildings have been built, a large number of old bathhouses have been demolished and closed down, the immediate need for bathing has been satisfied at home, high-end bathing clubs under the function of market segmentation have replaced the services of the old bathhouses, and people's socialization has become more convenient and enriched under the popularization of the Internet. Through the study of contemporary people's social life style, I found out that the future social place in the city is a space to satisfy a variety of socialization. I hope to rethink and reconsider the public space in the contemporary urban environment by designing a space that wraps and projects the old building in a way that the old building can be seen through the new, as a way of commemorating the use of the old building that has disappeared in time, so that it can become a multi-functional center for urban social life, where different groups of people can choose different ways of enclosure, and there are various kinds of sliders (separating spaces) and furniture that can be flexibly changed for different uses. "Let's Socialize" creates spaces for different forms of socialization and allows for the discovery of more flexibility in space.

This project is inspired by an ancient Chinese poem which describes a young woman who wonders in her house and meets her husband in dreams. I was deeply touched by the poem's expression of intense sadness, so I wanted to try to apply this sadness, which is portrayed in a contrasting way, to the space.

Five Stages of Grief：否認（denial）、憤怒（anger）、討價還價（bargaining）、沮喪（depression）和接受（acceptance）

According to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross The grieving process repeats these five stages over and over again.

My first proposal ：

Translucent material, frosted glass. This opacity symbolises the initial denial of the Wall.

But the grief is soaked into her life. The shadow of her husband's death is always around her. The Five Steps are repeated, even in daily life, in praying, in wandering, the shadow of death continues to pass through the walls of different dimensions to affect the feelings of her life.

The translucent wall-Denial:

Rough materials, coagulants. These textures can represent instigating anger. A sudden turn forces the visitor to confront the anger directly.

The feflective wall- bargaining, frustration and acceptance: Finally towards calmer, more reflective materials, polished tiles. Leading to a space with a distant view. Representing the widow's mood of the week.

The visitor enters the widow's perspective and feels the white bones (shadows of war) reflected in three walls of different materials. The wandering corridor passes through the three walls of different materials and there is no escape, remaining shrouded under the white bones.

Design of dispute resolution space

The project is located in Tebelo Township in Zhaoge County, a large village formed by the merging of different villages.

When I visited the area for my field research, the residents told me that the custom of not intermarrying between different classes still exists. The reason for this is that the Yi people are a people who have moved from slavery to modern society, and the difference between classes still exists in people's minds. Especially after the merging of villages, young men and women in love who want to enter into marriage are hindered by their families because they belong to different tribes.

Through my research on Yi culture, I discovered a specific process of social conflict resolution. Guided by the concept of space as a container for social customs, I hope to design a space to demonstrate this conflict resolution process, thus becoming a dispute resolution space to resolve conflicts in the land with a process familiar to the Yi people.

Course： Urban public space design

The Jinling Flower Market is located in Andermen, Nanjing. After research, we found that the popularity of the market is low and only succulent sales are high, which is one of the major features of this flower market. We plan to transform two of the greenhouses into a succulent social centre and plan a series of activities to pull the market's heat and sales. Relying on the principle of easy propagation of succulent leaves, we combined the theory of fractal with the planning of the two spaces of the site and designed movable modules for transport, parking, sales, leisure and sharing respectively. The design aims to explore new spatial patterns and interior installations for the traditional flower market, and to expand the scope of design thinking to include transport and the sale of urban stalls. Combining botanical features and civic activities, it transforms the single mode of selling into a new marketplace that combines trading and leisure activities.

The propagation season for succulents is usually in spring and autumn, as the climate is suitable for improving propagation success.

Total sun exposure without any obstruction can promote the production of anthocyanins in succulents, which makes the leaves appear red.

Heart space

The original site of the project was a farm's greenhouse sheds. The plan at the time was to convert one of the sheds into an annex space for a nearby hotel. Based on my research of the site, I decided to design it as a healing space for hotel guests.

The healing space is an enclosed indoor space, with the materials of the original greenhouse allowing a lot of light to enter the interior of the healing space, and interspersed with public green spaces that provide a comfortable and pleasant landscape. This allows hotel guests to have a safe and relaxing holiday in this space.
