DESIGN

SYMBIOSIS This is an undergraduate thesis project that explore forms of creative space generated by various architectural elements, such as lights, envelope, and shape. Through these elements users are expected to imagine the future form of interaction. Symbiosis is a digital media laboratory or incubation space, Located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, that promote a new interaction between human and digital matters. This project aims to trigger both formal and informal interaction between artist and scientist, and to enable an open platform to develop research-based collaboration.

Monstrous form are intendedly different from the surrounding context. It aims to attract attention and generate question that created from the dialogue between building and user, and/or building and landcsape. The primary program such as analog lab and audiovisual lab are randomly spread both vertical and horizontal. Then the other program are placed around them. Through the exploration of solid and void such as porous form, each room has a 360 degrees view overall while gives the user a different experience in every space.

DESIGN

ANARCITY In this studio, we were asked to imagine and design the future Jakarta in 2050 with the dystopian scenario that Jakarta will sink and all systems that support will be paralyzed. Rather than organizing program in order, Anarcity explored the concept of anarchy by tried to free up space from the function. This function will appear when space is activated by movement that causes the event. So, space will be free, undeďŹ neable, and formed by the user.

instructor : Budi Prayitno | Design Studio : 2010 | Location : Jakarta, Indonesia

All function are freely placed under one extremely big continous shell structure with various different height. The function slowly changed and emerged from the differences of feelings and experiences of space when occupants passing through the shell. Anarcity seeks for the spatial opportunity for the all community to engage in the social interaction. The giant landscape on the ground level gives the maximum openness of the public space, inviting all people to gather and play.

RESEARCH

DIAMAGNETIC SPECIES Is it possible to translate a plant mechanisms to create an artiďŹ cial organism? what types of elements can we explore from it? This is a collaboration project between architecture and new media art developed by Dorxlab [ digital architecture laboratory] with Honf [new media art laboratory based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia] for the 13th Istanbul Biennial in Turkey. The concept of this project is how to use digital technology to form a new language from a mechanism carried by plant. In another perspective the plant is viewed as a collection of codes that can be rearranged, combined, reshaped.

Those codes are divided into three stages :

SYNTHETIC NATURE

LIFE FORM

In the ďŹ nal step, the sound data will be converted again into a kinetic installation. with so/by then we create an artiďŹ cial organism that likely breathes based from the amplitude changes from the generated sound data.

The water distribution process from the roots will cause humidity in each branch. the sensor will then read the humidity and translate it into a data that will be processed in the next step/stage. NEW LANGUAGE The humidity data will be converted into a new language of graphics and sound oscillators, this step uses arduino board for the transforming process.

12

SYNTHTIC NATURE: Phase 1 Pattern Studies Patterns and form studies were explored through the use of mixed media, such as analogue form-ďŹ nding models with papers, as well as digital simulation using Grasshopper and Kangaroo plugin.

phase 2 Digital and Physical Simulation Through digital and physical model, this installation mechanism was developed. The sound readings from the sensors are processed by a Firey plugin which interprets the data and sends the instruction to the servos via arduino board.

RESEARCH

STRING OF NATURE [S.O.N] Biomimicry is a nature obeservation in physical, model, systems, process, and elements that inspired or replicated to solve human problem. Through a very long process, nature has gone through a process of trial and error to improve the living organism and has proven its ability by time. The design that emerged from biomimetics has created latest technology developments in both macro scale and nano level technology. The aim of this research is to develop a surface that can applied as wall or building skin which spatial conďŹ guration respond to changing weather conditions, people ows and human communication, enviromental factors and ecological considerations.

installation

This research was inspired from the natural behaviors exhibited by the mimosa pudica plant whose leaves will close when exposed to touch. Through this observation, this research tried to mimic the behavior and using it to respons the light levels. A number of experiments were developed by physical and digital simulation. The result is a set of ribbons consisted of 250 pieces ithat arranged vertically.

Digital simulation: All the digital simulation were processed in Grasshopper and Firey plugin. test 1: Through the simple simulation, the light levels was assumed as a certain distance between point and surface. The closer the distance between point and surface, the larger aperture that will be generated by the surface. test 2: Real time simulation are developed using camera as a photo-sensors. Then, the data from the sensors are processed in Processing to have the black and white image with the different level of lights. After that, Grasshopper and Firey are used in the last process to interprets the data and sends corresponding instructions to the servos.

COMPETITION

KRONOLOGIDISASTER Technology is a force of nature. it is the force of human presence in the world - Paul Sepheard Kronologidisaster is a research program collaboration project between art, architecture and science to create life form mechanism deďŹ ned by communities with organic method as medium to build the communication behaviour and ecosystem supporting who living in Hazard-Prone Areas. KRONOLOGIDISASTER attempts to describe a complex mechanism through an open platform that was developed through organic method to build the dialectic between human and nature, human and human by build together (D.I.W.O; Do It With Others) a life form of the ecosystem that would later become a survival mechanism when the natural disasters happened and undermine the basic components of life such as water, food, and energy supply.

Indonesia geography and demographic have its unique biodiversity. They are formed due to subduction zones of three main active tectonic plates: the Eurasian Plate, PaciďŹ c plate, and The Indo-Australian Plate. In a term of natural disaster countermeasures, Indonesia has undergone story after The Tsunami in 2004, earthquake in 2006, and the latest is Mount Merapi Eruption in 2010.

research lab

In response to this natural phenomenon, every community group or society has its own knowledge and ways to deal with the environment for the sake of survival. The mechanism in the face of the incident are formed from experience, knowledge, expectations and problems that occurred in surrounding areas. We begin to divide the mechanism into 3 phase : pre-disaster, disaster, post disaster.

A simple simulation using swarm system, by combining a simple logic that applied to each particle swarms that acts as human colony. The particle moves from base point and spread in all direction. Created various path pattern which is then connected to the lines that will be the structure of the building.

COMPETITION

IN BETWEEN architecture is formed by communication while space is a medium that produces and/or produced by the interaction. Nowadays, the form of communication has changed or shifted physically. Electronic technologies such as telephone and internet has forced us to re-form and reconstruct the social patterns at all aspects of our personal lives. In between is an installation that tries to respond these shifting social pattern by pulling out the virtual interaction space into our physical space.

installation on the street

Paradoxical intervention in the topography of the city is formed between the real space - virtual space, private - public, social - antisocial, which produce new layer known as cyber space.

urban cyber topography

Paths, walls, windows, buildings, and other elements in this layer seemed to fused into inďŹ nite networks that are connected to each other. This installation works by responding signals coming out from mobile phone which is then be transformed into lights that placed at web. The more people interact with their phones, the more light will light up.
