Selected projects in this portfolio from my project archive. The projects were specifically selected to show a variety of my skills and approach.

My passion for interior design began at a very young age and has since grown into a lifelong fascination of finding balance between function and aesthetic.Throughout my four years of academic experience at Heriot Watt university the program has taught me persistence, determination and has allowed me to evolve my artisitc and creative skills everyday. To me,good design realises the potential of the space,it involves considered choices teamed with a sense of bravery.Understanding of how an inhabitant engages with a space has become a necessary design process in my work. Each project has given me an opportunity to explore new ideas, challenges and improve my design skills and knowledge in creating well thoughtful spaces that excel productivity and livability.

HOPE-A DRUG AND ALCOHOL REHABILITION RETREAT 4TH YEAR PROJECT / DESIGN STUDIO SOFTWARES USED:AUTOCAD,SKETCHUP,MAXWELL,PHOTOSHOP

The brief of the thesis project asks to create an in-depth,objective and well communicated proposal that communicates project aims and objectives, gather and collate all known facts, illustrate thinking and concepts, determine and confirm what is needed and end by stating the problem but also considering the solution.

Methamphetamin Cocaine Heroin Marijuana Morphine

Drug overdoses and alcohol addiction have rapidly been increasing and spreading over the years in America specifically among young adults aged from 18 to 24.Many individuals who often need help do not want to receive treatment since it can appear depressing and intimidating. Therapeutic and rehabiliation wellness centers are often considered gloomy, tucked away, and shabby even though spaces designed to treat emotional, mental, or interpersonal issues should be potrayed as spiritual, holistic and should aim to create spaces that help teach end-users with new methods of interacting in a drug-free environment. This project aims to answer the current design problem in the healthcare industry by proposing a space that implements interactive functional spaces fostering social interaction, positive health and spiritual experience for end-users to heal faster and receive a full recovery returning end-users to a better and healthier lifestyle.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT A

To design an independent therapeutic drug and alcohol center committed to offer treatment and rehabilitation services, increase awarness about the disease and contribute to scientific research in the field of addiction.

A

To ease the pain of individuals and families by restoring health, health, hope, spirituality and relationships amongst them

A

To treat the disease of substance use disorders and alochol addiction resulting in negative physchological, economical, social and physical impacts by implementing related suitable interactive functional spaces.

THE OBJECTIVES O

O

O

To address the possible methods to overcome the reasons behind the addiction and to understand as well as recognise the challenges faced through research and case studies in USA. To blend architectural elements and interior spaces inorder to allow patients who have been affected from drug and alcohol addictions heal faster and return to a better healthier lifestyle To choose a relevant site with a pleasant environment and make benefical changes to the existing building if necessary.

The client of this project is the United States Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), also known as the Health Department, is a cabinet-level executive branch department of the U.S. federal government with the goal of protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration responsible for the implementation of health care rehabiliation for substance diagnosed indiviuals

END-USERS The focused end users for this rehabiliation centre are drug & alcohol addicted young adults in USA specifically living in Ohio under the age group of 18 to 24 years.Individuals who are primarly effected by environmental factors mainly cultural trends such as single parent, divorced, disturbed relations, traumatic experiences, peer pressure and depression). This specific age group has been chosen according to the highest number of cases reported abroad.Furthermore, this age group of individuals are classified as legal adults and permitted to drink and perform acts by law without restrictions which has resulted in life threathening diseases such as SUD or even death.

TACKLED ISSUES Young adults impacted by past or present traumatic experiences, as either a child or adult. Young adults who feel deprived, unheard and lonely without any friends to share their issues. Young adults who got addicted to substances due to peer pressure. Young adults who feel like they don’t fit in or are out of the mainstream and lack in confidence. Young adults highly impacted with cultural trends such as parent divorce/single parent or extra martial affairs.

THE WORST CRISIS IN AMERICAN HISTORY Drug deaths in America, which fell for the first time in 25 years in 2018, rose to record numbers in 2019 and are continuing to climb, a resurgence that is being complicated and perhaps worsened by the coronavirus pandemic currently.Nearly 72,000 Americans have died from drug overdose last year, (175) every day, seven every hour according to preliminary data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — an increase of 5 percent from 2018 an estimation of 34.1 million young adults (age 18 to 25) in the United States according to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.Deaths from drug overdoses remain higher than the peak yearly death totals ever recorded in Ohio. Drug deaths have risen an average of 13 percent so far this year over last year, according to mortality data from local and state governments collected by The New York Times, covering 40 percent of the U.S. population. If this trend continues for the rest of the year, it will be the sharpest increase in annual drug deaths since 2016, when a class of synthetic opioids known as fentanyls first made significant inroads in the country’s illicit drug supply.

SITE BUILDING

SITE ANALYSIS According to research it is proven that environment plays a huge role in impacting peoples experience. The site selected for my drug and alcohol wellness rehabiliation is an empty ground area located in Cincinnati,Ohio due to Ohio being one of the highest rated location in United States with less rehabiliations. The original site of the building (The cataylst building) was located in Spokane, Washington on an irregular site. and was then relocated. The Catalyst Building is originally the first office building in Washington State constructed out of cross-laminated timber. It is pursuing Zero Energy and Zero Carbon certification by the International Living Future Institute, making it one of the largest buildings in North America. Drug and alcohol addiction center located in isolated areas with less human trafficing are proven to have a better impact on end-users trying to recover. This is important because it helps recovering inpatient rehab recovery addicts to focus on their recovery program.Drug addiction cases are usually associated with mental illness and co-occuring disorders. For the mind to work properly, it does not need to be disturbed. Addiction treatment centers located in areas with high human traffic will always make sure that they completely shut out the outside world. The site surrounded by vegetation and green spaces used as an organic garden and outdoor activities.A combination of nature and experiential therapy, gardening has proven to be successful in helping addicts gain mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.

CONCEPT End-users are the key to healthcare design whether it is the needs and wants of the user, the experiences or the recovery of the users. The concept of this project is derived from the healing path of the end-users STAGE 1 : DETOXIFICATION ( MEDICAL + THERAPIES) -The medical team evaluates, stabilises and prepares the entry of incoming patients for physical and mental health issues. Blood tests are used to measure the amount of drugs in the patient’s system determining the level of medications needed for every individual to detoxify.End-users are then recommended to attend effective and the most successful therapies such as cognitive,multi-dimensional family. therapy STAGE 2 : EDUCATIONAL FACILITY -Ambivalence and denial can be the worst enemy for end-users in the first days of recovery. The facility educates young adults on the damaging effects of using substances or drinking alcohol inorder to help them understand the consquence and assist them to a better menal space. The facility also provides proffessional classes for individuals wanting to continue their missed studies due to substance STAGE 3 : HOLISTIC APPROACH ( THERAPIES) -The environment is a big part of holistic treatment with how it can interact and create connections with the different functions and programs that can be offered to end-users. A holistic treatment approach can help provide end-users with physical and emotional sobriety that can be calming and soothing while being in a clean and positive living environment. STAGE 4: LIVING FACILITY (INPATIENT CARE) -Inpatient treatment allows people to receive treatment a longer period of time and is able to have 24 hour care while having residential treatment programs

THE PROPOSED BUILDING IS DISSECTED INTO FOUR ZONES ACCORDING TO THE STAGES OF THE TREATMENT OF PATIENTS

FEATURES SUCH AS SKYLIGHT,SKYBRIDGE,OPEN SPACES AND GLASS WINDOWS INTERGRATED IN THE DESIGN

DESIGN STRATEGY The main objective of the design strategy was to incorporate a holistic treatment(spiritual retreat); a home like feel atmosphere with a connection to nature and landscape where end-users can relax and feel comfortable while seeking medical treatement and educational facilities. Several spacial characteristics such as open voids, windows, and green spaces were intergrated to reach the objective. A holistic treatment can relate to the disease of drug and alcohol instead of the symptoms that can cause the addiction. The cause of these addictions can be through stress, childhood trauma, or other issues like the environment the person is living in. A holistic treatment approach can help provide a person with physical and emotional sobriety that can be calming and soothing while being in a clean and positive living environment.

The functions of the building are interlocked around a central relaxation and healing area enabling views along the pathways which helps reduce the institutionalised feeling of a hospital by allowing the central areas views towards the two zones. The idea of creating a connection to nature was to stimulate and cultivate users is based on research conducted which demonstrated the importance of nature in a drug and alcohol rehabiliation center. Spontaneous social spaces like the relaxing area or restaurant space were incorporated in the design to persuade users to socially involve with other users and staff members.Positive social interaction and interactive spaces are given importance as it acts as a link which transforms a healthcare to a communal well-being rehabiliation.

HYDROTHERAPY

Proven to be one of the most successful therapies-constitutional hydrotherapy is a special technique in which alternating hot and cold compresses are applied to the torso and abdomen which greatly improves recovery from various illnesses or disorders. The goal is to stimulate the body’s own natural ability to heal itself.Hydrotheraphy detoxifies and elimates toxins from the body increasing blood vessel tones for end-users diagnosed with substance abuse disorder. The process helps increase white blood cell productions along with an increasement of immune functions.

AROMATHERAPY THERAPY Aromatherapy heals and balances the body and mind through the use of essential oils medically to improve the health of body, mind and spirit. It enhances both physical and emotional health. These oils are extracted from plants via distillation, a process that captures the plant’s smell and flavour – its ‘essence’. Essential oils have unique scents (hence aromatherapy) and properties that can affect the brain and body in certain ways when inhaled or applied topically.Essential oils can be inhaled or applied to the skin in lotions or balms, however, most aromatherapy sessions revolve around the former. The aroma of essential oils stimulates the nose’s smell receptors, which sends a message to the brain’s limbic system-the part that controls basic emotion, feeling and unconscious physiological function – instructing the body to react in a certain way. Many people complain of difficulties sleeping during the early days of recovery. Essential oils in evening will be able to relax them and put them in the mood for sleep.

The space was designed to boost the brain and heal the body of end-users.Different aromas of essential oils are scented relaxing the body, mind and soul. The space also acts as a waiting area connecting the foot massage and body massage portion of the aromatherapy.End users can chose their favourite essential oil to be massaged with during the therapy session.

Lavender oil : Referred to as the oil of peace because of its ability to help people become calm and relaxed. Peppermint oil : said to be good for helping people deal with minor body discomforts such as mild headaches. It is also good for relieving nausea – this can be a problem for people going through withdrawals during substance abuse treatment. Rosemary oil : has mild antidepressant qualities, as well as brain activity increasement.

CONCEPT APPROACH The concept of my proposed wall design for colab, the first material library located in D3 evolved around the brand’s existing logo which incorporated several geometrical shapes such as hexagon, circles and fine lines. The concept approach of the wall was a combination of futuristic and natural elements combined. Futuristic designs are one of the trendiest themes worldwide and are mainly characterised by its strong chromaticism, long dynamic lines and suggestive motion. The colour palette used contains a selection of neutral colours with pops off green and blue on the main highlighting elements to attract the end-users attention. The interactive floor design features a virtual motion sensor detecting movement of end-users through virtual gestures turning the installed LED strip lights on and off throughout the day.

The methology of designing a futuristic space was inspired by the existing colab logo and considered according to the location of the venue and how the design will relate its surrounding. The reason behind a material library to exist is to put all the changes and new materials in the material world in order to make them accessible to a wider audience,to raise awareness of new innovative, sustainable materials presenting them to the market and to proffessional users. As a designer I want individuals to enter colab and feel the innovation and perceive the space as the modern world of materials.A space that inspires individuals to think beyond limits and experiment,A space that inspires individuals to build their vision and collaborate with one another.A modern new aged space taking one step towards the future of materials.

ECCENTRIC FUTURISTIC The concept of the wall evolved around the existing colab logo design which incorproated geometric shapes such as triangle, circles and fine lines. The concept approach of the wall is a combination of futuristic and natural elements. Its mainly characterized by its strong chromaticism, long dynamic lines, suggesting motion, urgency, and lyricism. Asymmetry and horizontal line is one of the prominent key features and known as a hallmark in futuristic themes. It comes in walls, and corners in the form of angled cutaways and is incorporated on the walls and floor, making a lively illusion to the ground and space. The color palette contains white, grey, silver, and black in the space, with pops and of lime, blue and color on main highlighting elements.LED installed as strip lights on floor and wall creating coordination between netural background and bright accents.

BRANDSCAPING MULBERRY ENGLAND RETAIL STORE 3RD YEAR PROJECT / DESIGN STUDIO SOFTWARES USED: AUTOCAD,SKETCHUP,PHOTOSHOP

P R E F A C E

The brief of the project aims to develop a critical approach to design a pop-up retail store located in the centre of a shopping mall embodying the essence of an iconic brand. The brand given to me for the store design was the global british brand, Mulberry England a leading luxury lifestyle house known for their excellent leather quality and goods. Two shop schemes were asked to design replicating the design to fit two different spaces.

i.Open concession Area (20 sq/m) with 2 walls. ii.Small shop (25 sq/m) with no exisiting walls & a 300x300 mm structural column in the centre of the space.

OPEN CONCESSION STORE VISUAL

DESIGN CONCEPT OF THE STORE The brief of designing two identical stores for Mulberry England includes designing a small shop (25 sq/m) with no exisiting walls & a 300x300 mm structural column in the centre of the space. All the materials used within the two stores are researched and considered keeping the core value and identity of the original brand. All materials are found within Somerset, The original destination of where the brand was found. The colors chosen give the end-users a landscape feel in the store. The furniture designed was inspired by the iconic mulberry leaf logo. The product displayed within the two stores include leather wallets, latest collection of mini hangbags and heels.

The design concept of the Mulberry open concession outlet was driven from the brands iconic and recognisable tree logo. The structure of the leaf and branches of the tree is what inspired me while designing the furniture pieces of the store,as Mulberry england is into nature and believes in keeping their heritage and core values alive. As a designer I wanted to keep the Somerset landscape alive by incorporating that into my design using textures and tones found where the brand was originally created. The aim of designing this store was for customers to experience and feel the roots of England.

The leaf display stand was an inspiration from the iconic Mulberry tree logo and falling leaves in Somerset,England and was designed to encapsulate the original roots of the brand. BRASS

A HAND MOVEMENT HEALTH DETECTOR FOR DEMENTIA USERS

The preface brief of the project was to design an innovative sensory material or product focusing around the generation and application of a new innovative sensory product for elderly diagnosed with dementia. The conceptual proposals should be prototyped and expressed clearly through various mediums such as technical detail, prototype renders and researched materials along with concept of the product.

SENSORY PRODUCT PROTOTYPE IN TWO COLORS

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT IDEA Elderly diseases can be prevented by simple hand movements performed during certain activities where your four fingers are incontact allowing numerous bones, joints and muscles in the hand to produce movements such as :

Rubber

Acrylic plastic

caoutoutchouc soft natural rubber finish

hypoallergenic nikel free stainless magnetic lock

The surface touching the skin uses a soft material such as caoutoutchouc rubber finish giving users a soft cushion like feeling. The interface of the product uses a hard material such as acrylic plastic.

The concept of developing this bangle was to ensure the safety of loved ones preventing heart-related conditions by monitoring heart rate and blood circulation. It was designed to save lives reducing the hundred thousand elderly who died of heart conditions annually. it has built-in cellular connectivity and, therefore, does not require phone or internet connectivity. Due to its materiality it is highly comfortable to wear on an everyday routine. It offers immediate help when seniors need it most. It has an emergency light button that automatically flickers and is notified immediately to be checked on.

Wearing this bangle would not only help monitor elderly health yet with the help of compression and depression of the veins it will also help keep balance their blood circulation and heart rate.
