“Albums largely devoted to pop and jazz standards are common these days, but how often do you encounter one that infuses each performance with the charm and vitality that Bryant brings to this collection? ”. - Mike Joyce, Jazz Time, Magazine “Solos done live in performance are nothing new for Ray Bryant, but stylistically, this recording does have the masterful, blues-based pianist digging into some new material of his own, along with the music of Fats Waller”. - Michael G. “Despite being almost 70 years old when he recorded Alone With Just My Dreams, Joe Wilder demonstrates that while he may not sustain the high notes as long as he used to, he still has very solid chops. This is a sumptuous album, highlighting Wilder’s lyricism and charm on the trumpet and flugelhorn.” - Dave Nathan, All Music Guide

“For Previn, it is as if the previous three decades did not occur for he plays in a style little changed from 1960, displaying an Oscar Peterson influence mixed in with touches of Lennie Tristano and Bill Evans’ chording, performing ten standards and his own “One for Bunz.” Highly recommended.” - Scott Yanow, All Music Guide Jazz

“Tyner’s huge, heavily percussive piano remains one of the most identifiable – and inimitable – sounds in jazz; but he also has an underrated lyrical side, revealed to great effect here... McCoy Tyner’s been so good and so prolific for so long that his excellence seems a given. But give credit where it is due. he has earned a place in the land of giants..” - Joel Roberts, All About Jazz

MAGAZINE REVIEW: NEW VIBE MAN IN TOWN “The facility Burton displays in this, his first album as leader, is startling. He is excellently supported by Cherico and Morello, whose four-, six-, and eight-bar brush exchanges with Burton are, as usual, brilliantly played and tastefully conceived. With the facility he has and the musical ability that shines through the deluge of notes, not to mention his fresh, happy approach, Burton stands as one of the bright lights on vibes.” (Don DeMicheal)

MARK MURPHY
This release presents the complete original Abbey Lincoln album Straight Ahead (Candid CJM8015), on which she shares the bill with such stars as Eric Dolphy, Coleman Hawkins, Booker Little, Mal Waldron, and Max Roach. An important musical work as well as an eloquent political statement, this now classic album didn’t receive unanimous approval in its day, as Ira Gitler made clear in his Down Beat review (included in its entirety in our booklet), where he accused the singer of being a “professional Negro” The only known alternate take from the session, as well as all existing tunes featuring Lincoln from two other dates from the same period have been added here as a bonus.
Although Rah wasn’t the first LP by vocal jazz giant Mark Murphy, it was the album that set him apart as one of the finest post-bop male jazz singers. In the book Jazz Covers, legendary DJ Giles Peterson listed Rah as one of his favorite jazz albums. In addition to the complete album Rah, this release also contains Murphy’s LP Hip Parade in its entirety. On these early efforts, Murphy is accompanied by such outstanding musicians as Blue Mitchell, Clark Terry, Bill Holman, Melba Liston, Urbie Green, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Barry Galbraith, George Duvivier and Jimmy Cobb, to name but a few.

NEW RELEASES PIAZZOLLA... O NO? +
TONY PERKINS TONY PERKINS + ON A RAINY AFTERNOON
ÁSTOR PIAZZOLLA PIAZZOLLA INTERPRETA A PIAZZOLLA
This edition presents two of only three albums ever recorded by celebrated actor Anthony Perkins in their entirety: his debut release Tony Perkins (1957) and On a Rainy Afternoon (1958). Best remembered for his role as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s legendary 1960-horror film Psycho (and its three sequels), Perkins decided to briefly try his luck as a jazz vocalist on three outstandings LPs during 1957-1958. A musical talent deserving of a lengthy discography, Perkins would never record another album again, instead choosing to dedicate himself exclusively to his acting career. Perkin’s vocal timbre, versatility and ability to evoke a mood bear a striking resemblance to Chet Baker.
This release contains the Ástor Piazzolla’s Quintet’s first two albums in their entirety. While Piazzolla ...o no? was, with the exception of two tracks, a selection of Piazzolla’s arrangements of works by other composers, Piazzolla interpreta a Piazzolla consisted mostly of the bandoneonist’s own compositions, including the first version of his celebrated “Adiós Nonino”, which he wrote after his father’s death.

CECIL TAYLOR
THE COMPLETE NAT HENTOFF SESSIONS
This release presents all existing recordings made by Cecil Taylor for the legendary Candid label!. Produced in 1960-61 by celebrated jazz critic Nat Hentoff, these recordings are essential to the history of modern jazz and feature such star sidemen as Archie Shepp, Clark Terry, Steve Lacy, Billy Higgins, and bassist Buell Neidlinger, who was the original leader on half of these sessions. A complete 1961 Taylor septet session produced by Creed Taylor, and his entire 1957 quartet performance at Newport have been added here as a bonus.
CD 1 & CD 2 [1-6]: ARCHIE SHEPP tenor sax (on Air and Lazy Afternoon only) CECIL TAYLOR piano BUELL NEIDLINGER bass DENNIS CHARLES drums SUNNY MURRAY drums (replaces Charles on CD 1 [2-3] only New York, October 12 & 13, 1960.
CD 2 [7-10] & CD 3 [1-4]: Same personnel as above.
DIS-129161 / 21.99 € includes 24-page booklet ALL MUSIC GUIDE (Printed edition, 2002) “This is a wonderful document from early in Taylor’s career, when he was midway between modernist approaches to standard material and his own radical experiments that would come to full fruition a few years hence. A classic recording that belongs in anyone’s collection.” (Brian Olewnick) PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ “The 1961 recordings for Candid –some of them under the nominal leadership of Neidlinger– secure a final balance between Taylor’s insistent unshackling of familiar organization and his interest in standards material. The original records are The World of Cecil Taylor and New York City R&B, but the various out-takes are equally revealing.” (Richard Cook & Brian Morton)

DOWN BEAT original review: The World of Cecil Taylor “Whatever else one may think of Taylor, it would be hard to deny that his playing conveys an immense, upsetting sense of urgency –much the same as could be said of Ornette Coleman, I suppose– and it was this immediacy which first convinced me that what Taylor is attempting is both genuine and valid. Listen carefully to this album. Whether or not your conclusions agree with mine, I think that you will find the time well spent.” (Frank Kofsky)
JEANNE LEE - RAN BLAKE
THE NEWEST SOUND AROUND + 6 BONUS TRACKS Included here in its entirety The Newest Sound Around (RCA Victor LSP-2500), marks singer Jeanne Lee’s record debut. She was backed on the LP by the revolutionary pianist who would be her most frequent accompanist during her inconstant career. In fact, after this album, Jeanne Lee wouldn’t make another studio recording until 1968, and after that she only rarely recorded until her rediscovery in the early 1970s. A never before heard live set of duets with Blake from the same period, featuring songs they would never record again, has been added here as a bonus.
JEANNE LEE, vocals (out on 3) RAN BLAKE, piano (out on 9 & 14)
George Duvivier, bass (on 5 & 8 only) New York, November 15-16 & December 7, 1961.
*BONUS TRACKS (16-21): Previously unissued broadcast. Same personnel except George Duvivier omitted. Ran Blake out on 18. Jeanne Lee out on 19. Note: Although it has been improved as much as possible, the sound quality on the broadcast is imperfect. It has been added here given its rarity and high musical value.
