01 VOID INTO STAIRS AN EXERCISE OF FORMING SPACE Design Studio 1 Instructor: Robert Levit Fall 2015 This is an exercise about forming space, in this exercise we are to produce a set of three voids that intersect each other. These voids are to be cut into a volume that is placed between two buildings. And these voids should provide pass-ways connecting two side buildings. There are to be up to ten faces to this whole volume and only singly curved surfaces can be used. My scheme is to use three seashell like voids to cut the volume, connecting two buildings, at the same time providing three different experiences of spaces, including a ramp-way, a mini auditorium and a lounge.

Two Ways to Consider There are two ways to consider connecting two sides of buildings traditionally. One is connecting through linked tunnels, another one is by overlapped rooms. I choose to use rooms rather than tunnels, because it not only connects two sides of buildings, but also provides space to stay.

My Choice of the Modular Shape Considering the request of using only singly curved surfaces and up to ten faces to the whole building, I choose seashell like shapes as the modular blocks to intersect each other to form the excavation. This shape only uses two faces to form a space and makes rich variations in one direction at the same time provides uniform slopes in the other way which makes it easy for people to use and make steps on it.

Process of Excavation

Functions Arrangement Different slops of voids are made depends on the relationship to the side buildings. Then the function of each void can be decided by their slop level. Here I arrange a ramp-way connecting two side buildings with open view; a mini auditorium not connecting with side buildings directly; and a lounge connecting to one building as an extension room.

Three Types of Space Depending on different slopes, the functions and experience of spaces become different. A flat slope space can be used as a mini auditorium; a mild slope surface can be a ramp-way directly to connect two buildings; a stiff slope surface could be used to enclose a room as a wall.

02 SPLIT / TWINS DESIGN OF A HOUSE FOR TWO PEOPLE Design Studio 2 Instructor: Mason White Winter 2016 This is a design exercise about reacting to random design requirements and developing the design from given volume and conceptual site condition. At the same time, there is a narrative premise to follow: Two residents want to occupy the same site, independently. There are some activities that are conjoined between them, though most of the activities are apart. My setting of the occupants are a woman and a man whose relationship is ambiguous. They are friends, even lovers, but live independently most time. The house is to satisfy their different personalities and provide opportunities of encountering.

Design Process The requirements of the design for me is: 1. introduce nature; 2. make courtyard; 3. use skylight. I first split the volume into two parts by intersecting it with the sloped site, and modify the relative position of these two parts to form the space for two, then satisfy three requirements by specific move.

His Home

Her Home A House for Two The operation of split and rotation generates two spaces in opposite orientations. They are separate but sharing walls and encountering at the beginning and the end of the space. Man’s home is the upper half, which face toward the sky; and girl’s home is the bottom half, which cut into the ground.

03 SPAN & SUPPORT A GALLERY DESIGN WITH STUDY OF STRUCTURE Design Studio 1 Instructor: Robert Levit Fall 2015 This project is to design a gallery on a real site where historical ruin exist. The gallery should span and cover the ruin which is a sunken area, and provides both exhibition space and access to the ruin area. The design process includes two part, first is to design a span form with thin shell as the roof, and the second part is to design a supporting system to support the roof and floor. My scheme is developed from the arch, the classic span form, and tensional wire bridge structure. I develop the arch to form the roof and exhibition space, and then combine it with wire structure to hang the whole building above the ruin.

Span Arch is one of the basic types of span

Space Developing arch from two demention to three demention generates space

Space in the Thickness There is a potential space hidden in the thickness of the wall

Span Module Prototype The first stage of this project is to develop a span structure with methods of folding or curving thin shells to get rigidity and to develop a pattern using this structure as basic module. My scheme is developed from the basic span--arch, and I make use of the thickness of the structure to enrich the space.

Site Circumstance The site of gallery is in a old city, located at the corner of the street, where one of the ruin sites is existing. The site is very open to the city context. The west of the site is a huge plaza; the north and south sides are also open spaces. Thus, the interface to the surrounding open space is needed to be concerned when organizing the modules to form the whole gallery.

Span the Gallery The gallery building are required to cover over at least 70 percent of the sunken ruin site. The gallery contains at least one floor and a roof, at the same time, cannot touch the ruin structure. The scheme should provide access to the ruin level also. Thus, it is important to concern about the supporting system and create a visit space for the ruin level too.

Structure Module Considering to minimize the interface between structures and the ruins, I make the building totally floating above the site without touching the ruins through tensional wires and tubular structures which works as rods. It is inspired by a bridge structure which works with only wires and rods. In my scheme, the rods grow up to the ground and combine with the roof structure, at the same time the dead load of the building makes the wire be tensional so that the structure works.

Site Axonometric

Sunken Plaza In the east of site, there is a sunken plaza which has three sets of stairs from different directions of site. The plaza is also one of the entrances to the ruins level.

North Plaza This plaza is to provide a entrance space for the north side, and make more space between gallery and the existing building.

Staired Plaza This is a staired plaza in the west side, which is as wide as the gallery and ruins. People from west will have an open and clear view to the ruins and its relationship with the gallery.

04 INSECTS EXERCISE OF GRASSHOPPER & 3D PRINT Visual Communication 2 Instructor: Brady Peters Winter 2016 This course aims to make us be familiar to grasshopper and the process of 3D print. Firstly, It asks us to model a set of insects with a same logic, which means we should use the a same function of grasshopper with number sliders to create different details. Then we should use this logic to make a space, to transfer the insects to building. The key function of grasshopper I choose is LOFT. Loft is a simple function that can makes a lot of variations just by modifying the sizes of sections and distances between them. Also, it is convenient to use loft to make building forms.

The site is currently covered by a pile of grove. I was wondering what form of architecture can fit into this context.

If the building is put directly on the ground, the plants on the site must be removed. The environment would be damaged.

So I put the main volume of the building above and under the ground, thus preserving the original atmosphere.

In order to maximize the greenbelt, only seven vertical support components stands on the ground.

Since the ground floor is overlapped by the second floor, some holes cross the upper part of the building, letting the skylight pass through and lighting the ground floor.

With the open space covered by the greenbelt on the ground floor, it creates a pleasant public space for people to wander and be relax.

Use round block to limit the space of every stadium. For those which need closed space, limit them with solid walls. For those need more open space, limit them with glass walls.

Use floor to combine those separate stadiums and limit the space of each floor. The space outside the stadiums become a more open and public one.

The open space between the stadiums forms a free and flowing space. It provides easy and direct connection between each two stadiums.
