From the Director ...
D
ear Parents, we began this School year with a lot of enthusiasm! As I write this letter, we are about to start the fourth month of the 2008-09 school year. It is going very well (at least from our point of view - I hope you’ve received good feedback at home as well) and we are very much looking forward to working with your children this year! As we start the new year, there is a particular aspect of our work with students that I want to share with parents and ask for your support and partnership – That is our continued emphasis on working to make NovaQuest International School a community in which "all feel respected and supported." Our “School Improvement Plan”, emphasizes working in partnership with parents. In order to make our School the best environment it can be for everyone, we are emphasizing five principles which, if applied by everyone, can make a significant difference in the environment and culture of any organization: “Learn Together”; "Play"; "Be There"; "Make Their Day"; and "Choose Your Attitude."
We are asking our faculty to discuss these five principles with students, and help them brainstorm ways in which they could work in making our school a good place for everyone (some examples included inviting others to sit at their table at lunch, greeting others in the hallway, keeping a positive attitude about things, and the like). We will also be talking with students about the development of a good community, and describe how each person makes a difference and what would happen if every one of our students worked to make our school the best place it could be for everyone. I encourage you to talk to your children, ask their reactions, and discuss these five topics with them. I am looking forward to this school year, to meeting those of you whom I have not yet met, and to working with all of you and your children. Seven Great Rules of Parenting
E
very parent has a dream that their children grow up to be good human beings. Common aspirations include success at studies, in professional life and in marriage. Even though becoming a parent is easy, living up to being one is tough, or seemingly difficult. Here are seven principles practiced for good parenting. 1) Love them: Every human being has a natural tendency to love as it allows us to actualize ourselves. We enjoy cuddling and caring for a baby, protecting the toddler, guiding the adolescent, facilitating the teenager and allow the adult to fly. Parents must freely give off their love without any reservations and restraints. Even when you are upset or angry with your child, make sure that your love and concern comes through. It is equally important to show this love physically. Hugging, the cuddling, an arm on the shoulder, holding a hand, stroking the hair, are all expressions of love. Parents must also demonstrate their love, respect and trust for each other. The fastest and best way to teach your child kindness, compassion and generosity is by expressing the love you have for your spouse. 2) Live your values: Children learn through observation. Sight is the most developed sense in humans. What you hear, may be forgotten; what you see will be understood; and what you do, will be remembered. Choose the values you wish your children to grow up with. If you want them to learn to be honest, live a truthful life. If you want them to be loving, freely give your love. If you want them to be respectful, show your admiration for everything and everyone. Never go against these values. For instance, if you are lecturing your children on the value of honesty but lie to someone, this incongruence will create dissonance between the spoken word and action, and confuse the child. It also leads to doubt and hinders the process of building self-confidence. Living on values is called integrity and later in life, it will be the
source, cause and root of success, in both professional and personal life. 3) Do not compare: Never tell your child that he or she is better or worse than another. This will make them either arrogant or have complexes. Help them decide on their own personal standards and then set new ones to exceed them. In the same spirit, never label your children - don't call them lazy, loud, stupid, etc. Such judgment will make your child withdraw from you. Labels last forever. They determine behavior patterns in adulthood and carry on even into middle age and later years. As an adult, the person is not able to get over the label. 4) Encourage: Do not force your way on your children. The fact that their way is different is a sign of evolution. As long as your children’s act does not harm them and anyone or anything else, that act is justified and must be encouraged. Even if their ideas go against yours, do not let your ego come between them expressing themselves. Again, what is harmful and what is not, is relative. That is where parent-child discussion starts. The child has to sell the rationale to the parents and parents have to sell theirs. Again, leave ego out and don't judge. And don't ever say, "Because I am your parent, you have to listen to me." Your child's respect for you will take a nosedive. Besides, any achievement, no matter how small has to be appreciated. Show them your pleasure and how happy they have made you — without the feeling that they owe it to you to make you happy. You do not have to buy them a gift for any or all achievements — just that encouragement is good enough. Another caution — do not make your children dependent on encouragement. The source of motivation must come from the action and not from your encouragement. There is a delicate balance between making them dependent on encouragement, and to continuously reaffirm their thoughts, intents and actions.

Cont’d. 5) Let your child teach: The normal situation is that parents do all the talking and the children have to listen. This is based on the perception that parents have more experience, more wisdom, more reason, and that children know nothing. Your true wisdom as a parent is tested by ‘listening’ more and talking less. Your role is that of a facilitator. You ask the questions, provoke the child's mind and let her/him seek answers. Have trust in the fact that the child, too, is bestowed with infinite potential. She/he may not have experiences yet, but any perception that has ever been lived, is in the child's mind and can be accessed. Questioning is the process of accessing this information. When children learn to command their own sources of information, their confidence in life is strengthened. You can affirm their thoughts and actions by doing what they do. Play cricket and football with them. Get your hands dirty in the sand and mud with them. Play in the rain with them. Climb on walls and trees. Teach them everything — from embroidery, stitching, cooking, typing, dancing to using the drill machine, changing car tires, hosting guests, shopping, paying bills. Do it with them — hands on, regardless of whether they are a girl or boy. Never say, "You are a girl and cannot do this or that." 6) Discuss matters openly: Do not have secrets. Whatever family issues you have, discuss them openly. Not only family matters, but social, political, economic,

What Parents Want Teachers To Know
A
s parents came to attend the Parent-Teacher conference, they told us that they hoped that their child's teacher knew the following: # Even though my child might seem average to everyone else, my child is very special to me. Look for what is unique about him/her. # Get to know my child -- and share the information with me. Children can act very differently at school and I count on you for insight into understanding my child. # I worry about how my child gets along with other children and with his/ her teachers. Is my child a leader? Does my child seem happy? Does my child volunteer information or do you have to call on him/her? Is my child cooperative…well liked…awkward? Telling me my child is doing fine isn't enough; give me positive examples of why I don't have to worry about my child. # Don't overdo homework. I understand that homework is necessary, but too much of anything is a bad thing. Families have so little time to be together…evenings shouldn't be spent only doing homework. We need time to do other things together too. Also, be aware that you are not the only teacher in the school. My child has other teachers who give homework too. # I know that ‘mandated’ testing and exams preparation is important, but don't make it the focus of your classroom, or the only reason my child is at school. # Please don't talk negatively about my child to other parents -- or other teachers. Don't talk about my child at
all if there's any chance he/she or other children might overhear. # Have a "Back to School" evening for parents early in the school year so I can learn your expectations for my child. Parents can be your biggest supporters if we know your goals and rules in advance and can reinforce them at home. # Welcome me into your classroom at least once in each term. Parents have a lot to offer at all grade levels -- reading to children, talking about hobbies and careers, organizing parties, helping with bulletin boards, presenting slide shows on something you are covering in class…. When we are welcome in your classroom, we are much more likely to support you and what you are doing. # I worry that my child will become the victim of bullies. Please be vigilant and do not allow anyone in the classroom the opportunity to make fun of him/her. # Communicate with me. When there is a problem, please contact me before it becomes a major issue. # Post grades in a timely manner so I can find out if my child is falling behind before it's too late. # Remember that I am not a perfect parent, and you are not a perfect teacher, but we are working together for the best of this child. # I am trusting you with my most precious belonging. Please cherish my child. # I am trying hard to be the best parent I can be. Give me encouragement, not a list of things my child needs. # I am afraid you are going to tell me the worst about my child -- surprise me. Tell me something great about my child as well. # I want to feel that you have time for our Parent/Teacher conference and are not just speeding me through. Try to be
as thorough as possible in your explanations. I want to know that you really know my child.

I joined NovaQuest International School recently. Although it’s not very long that this institution has been established but I am really impressed by the remarkable progress the school has made in such a short time period. The arrangement of different events, participation in different competitions along with the curriculum is very impressive. NovaQuest International is providing an opportunity to appreciate and help the students evolve their hidden talent.
Even though its a new school for me, and adjusting to a new school and environment is initially a daunting task, the warmth and support I have received from Ms. Yasmeen and Ms. Robina is unforgettable. The director of the school, Sir Aurangzeb, is a great man. He is extremely hard-working, and always arranges different seminars, presentations and workshops, for teachers to help them improve their teaching styles, for students to excel, and above all, for the school to prosper. Other school either do not arrange such workshops, or if they do, they charge money for such activities that ought to be a part of an intrinsic quality improvement program for the school. What I’ve learned from my teaching experience at NovaQuest International School is that the fulfillment you can achieve as a teacher cannot be attained from any other profession. The unconditional love and affection given by the students to a teacher cannot be compared to any other reward. It can dominate any reward given in any other organization! Yet again, teaching is also one of the most difficult jobs one can go through. One really has to give all of one’s self to this profession before attaining the results one wants but at the end of the day it’s all worth it. Even a single word learned by a child because of your efforts can make you feel as if you’ve been paid. That makes me want to share a comment from one of my students with you. Previously, a boy in Grade IX said to me, “My father says that teaching is the easiest thing to do in the world.” I just smiled at him for I used to think the same way when I was a student!

Teaching at NovaQuest International School has been a splendid experience for me up till now. I have been able to share my knowledge and time with the children of O’ Level, who have been supportive throughout this short period of time. Muhammad Iqbal
I
qbal, Sir Muhammad (1873-1938), philosopher, poet, and political leader, was born in Sialkot. In 1927 he was elected to the Punjab provincial legislature and in 1930 became president of the Muslim League. Initially a supporter of Hindu-Muslim unity in a single Indian state, Iqbal later became an advocate of separate homeland for the muslims of India. A nation is indeed fortunate if it produces a few such individuals in centuries. Such individuals, although very rare, change the course of history forever, as indeed Iqbal did. Pakistan owes its existence to Allama Iqbal. Thus, the people of Pakistan owe a great deal of gratitude to this extraordinary visionary. In addition to his political activism, Iqbal was considered the foremost Muslim thinker of his day. His poetry and philosophy, written in Urdu and Persian, stress the rebirth of Islamic and spiritual redemption through selfdevelopment, moral integrity, and individual freedom.
