Standing on the Shoulders of Goddesses I took myself to a place of remembering and celebration of the Goddesses upon whose shoulders I have walked. We’ve all walked. Remembering the sisters who join me upon that road, but who have passed. I listened to the groovy Hippie music of the ‘60’s at the West Fest celebration of Woodstock’s 40th anniversary. The music contained the memories. Flooding back to me. Letting go. Flying. Dancing. That’s what my soul wanted to do this month. I am listening to my younger self on audio as Bobbie is archiving all my hundreds of old audio tapes into an MP3 archive. I must say I love that younger self. I admire her. Proud. She fuels me now as I am deep into writing my autobiography. I read her daily in journals the she left for me. I’m thankful to her. Bless her. That younger self has made me reflective. She shows me how we all stand on the shoulders of Goddesses. Our ancestors are the Goddesses. We are Goddesses. I think my younger self would be thrilled to see all her hard work being archived. She would tell me to make sure it all gets into the Dianic University for the women. It’s important. I tell her … No problem. It will be done! And soon!
I think about my dear longtime friend Merlin Stone. I’ve just finished creating a new Dianic Feminist Philosophies class featuring her book, When God was a Woman. Merlin … where are you? She and I would call each other every Winter Solstice, but several years ago when I called I found a disconnected number. Since then, nothing. I fear she’s passed. Forgotten. She’d be in her 90’s if she were still alive. Kisses to you Merlin. I love you! We will remember you Merlin. You are a Goddess upon whose shoulders we stand. Dianic Witches Video Contest What’s a Dianic Witch? Women-born women-only who practice my flavor of Dianic Witchcraft, not some other tradition that calls themselves Dianic. Not sure which you are? Here’s a video for you! What do I have to do? You must have a clear, concise message that speaks to the topic. This contest is completely subjective, as in Z Budapest is picking the one she likes best.
Want some tips on what Z likes? Z likes a strong message, a good solid delivery, creativity, but not over done. She likes tasteful, and not over-produced videos. Be authentic. And, Z wants to see your shining faces!
How long do I have to do it? You have until February 20th, 2010. That’s nearly four months! The winner will be announced and featured in the March issue of Goddess magazine.

Purpose? We want to get our own Dianics out there making videos about the Dianic Tradition. It’s important that other women hear from you personally. Our tradition is an oral tradition and it’s through word-of-mouth that other women will find it. The goal is to bring more awareness to the Dianic Tradition and to the books that teach the tradition. And, have fun doing it!
How many videos can I make? There’s no limit. We’d recommend if you want to do more than one, then do them for different books.

Persephone, Queen of the Underworld There is probably a greater familiarity to those who study the Goddess with Persephone as Kore, Maiden Goddess, Goddess of the Springtime and daughter of Demeter, Goddess of grain, harvest and abundance. When Persephone is referred to as Kore, that word simply means “girl.” In the more patriarchal version of the story, the Maiden Kore was out with Her girlfriends gathering the beautiful, abundant summer flowers when Hades, King of the Underworld (and brother of Zeus, head honcho of the gods) saw Her and was completely captivated by Her. He quickly contacted His brother Zeus and asked if he could “have” or “take” Persephone, as his wife, down to the Underworld. Zeus gave his permission and as Kore was separated from Her friends a little ways, Hades came up out of a cave and grabbed Kore, pulling Her down to the Underworld where he raped Her, then made Her his Queen. The subsequent grief and near madness of Her mother, Demeter, caused the earth to go into extreme drought and death, and Demeter refused to give life to anything to grow again until She found Her daughter. It may seem a little amazing, and even a bit unbelievable, that Demeter would not immediately know where Her daughter was, but this is the patriarchal version of the story and therefore the male gods have all the answers. For Her part, Persephone was at first despondent and wounded, refusing to eat or drink. Gradually, She succumbed to Her hunger and thirst, and the coaxing of Hades, and ate a few seeds of the pomegranate at Her new husband’s table. That, of course, sealed the deal because anyone who ate in the Underworld was there for good. Finally, helped by Hecate, and a visit by Demeter to plead Her case as a grieving mother with Zeus, it was agreed upon that Persephone would spend a number of months as Queen in the Underworld, and the other months back with Her mother Demeter so that the earth could enjoy life and all the creatures and people on it would have food again. This part of the story explains and accounts for the turn of the seasons. It also emphasizes the dual nature of the MotherDaughter Goddess. They have, even in maturity, a symbiotic relationship. Indeed, Demeter and Persephone were often referred to as “the Demeters” or just “the Goddesses,” and in those roles were the major figures in the Eleusinian Mysteries, the largest mystery cult in recorded history which spanned many centuries. In this mystery cult, Persephone was actually the major Deity.
However, there is another important thing that happens in this story. She who was kidnapped to the Underworld was named Kore, and after Her Sacred Marriage, or Heiros Gamos, She became Persephone. This was Her transformation of the Sacred Bride. She ruled spiritual marriage. And in this profound aspect of the story, Persephone embodies a mystery. She comes to be very happy in Her status as Queen of the Underworld. She enjoys Her empowerment there. She takes on Her power like a mantle after Her transformation from Kore (Girl) to Queen Persephone. Persephone actually means “Destroyer.” Now, how can any Goddess with a name as powerful as "Destroyer" be depicted as a helpless, innocent victim, sexually ravaged against Her will by an older, powerful male? Patriarchal takeover of Her stories - that's how. In earlier versions of the inceptive Persephone story, the Homeric and Orphic versions, there is no kidnapping and no rape. Persephone consents to marriage with Hades. She is a nymph of the River Styx. Nymph in the Greek means a few things: it means “nubile young woman”, it means ”bride” and it means ”playful.” Nymphs were not only sexual creatures, they were even erotic predators.
Demeter & Persephone
Doesn’t sound like the helpless “Girl” in the patriarchal version, does it? In these stories, Persephone playfully accepts Her dark marriage to the King of the Underworld, and they rule the Underworld equally. They are almost always pictured side by side, the essence of matrimonial partnership, with Persephone most often in the foreground, presumably because She had even greater power than Hades. He had power over the dead, but She had not only power over the dead, but also over the living in an ever changing cycle. In the Eleusinian Mysteries, She is referred to as Magna Thea, Great Goddess. And as Queen of the Dead was also the third entity in the Maiden-Mother-Crone triple Goddess, not Hecate. The center of Her worship as primary Goddess was in Greater Greece, Sicily and particularly, Locri. She had only priestesses who tended Her temples and places of worship, no priests (which tends to bear out the belief that Her original story had no capture or rape involved). Her rituals were also performed in caves, considered to be entrances to the Underworld. Interestingly, in Locrian culture, it was women who transmitted class and rank in the marriage bond. Men owned and conveyed property, but it was the women who determined the social status of their husbands. Clearly this was still a more matrifocal society than the rest of Greece, and there was greater equality of partnership on many levels in marriage there. Through Her stories, we learn Queen Persephone is compassionate, generous, kind, understanding, but She can also be wrathful when crossed. She is the Great Destroyer, the great leveler of all classes and ranks as Queen of the Dead. She destroys the life of the earth each year with Her withdrawal to the Underworld, and Demeter restores it. She is the embodiment of Claiming One’s Own Empowerment and at the same time She represents Equality in the marriage partnership. She imparts the message that death can be beautiful, a place of peace and rest where She presides. It is chthonic Persephone who greets us as we pass through the veil between this life and the next. And it must surely have been Persephone who provided both the terror, and the glorious, joyous, eternal freedom felt by those initiates into the Eleusinian Mysteries.
Goddess Hestia (Vesta) Hestia, highest Goddess among Both mortals and immortals, You in your eternal home, Are the most revered of all. Without you, we can hold no banquet, For yours is the first drop of sweet wine Poured onto the ground, and Yours is the last drop too, O Hestia - Homeric hymn to Hestia
Hestia, was the ancient Greek Goddess and to the Romans who called Her Vesta, the Goddess who represented the bonding force of family and community. She was represented by the flame and the hearth. Wherever there is a flaming hearth, the presence of Hestia can be felt. It is the symbol of warmth, security and domestic tranquility. That eternal warmth and flame represented Hestia, whether it was at home or the sacred fire of the city’s center. There were very few statues or monuments to Hestia because Her presence was a way of being and living that wasn’t meant to be about worshipping at Her statue. She is the flame. She is our internal sacred connection to Goddess and ourselves. She is the beginning and the end of all things. As in honor to Her, the first glass of wine and the last drops of wine, at a banquet, were given in thanks to the Goddess, for it was her unifying power that people gathered to celebrate together. There aren’t many pictures of Hestia except a serene appearing profile with Her veiled head on a coin. Hestia was the Goddess of home, hearth, warmth, fire and keeping a sacred space.
A globe is symbolic of Hestia, too. The roundness of this icon symbolizes Hestia’s presence at the center of all things. It can also symbolize universal acceptance and constancy and connection, regardless of your location. Hestia is invoked and represented by the symbol of an altar. The altar represents sacredness as well as Her silent presence, the spiritual center in all of us. She is pictured wearing a vest and this was Her symbol of protection, comfort and even modesty. The locked box is a sign of Hestia’s presence. The locked box is a symbol of virginity and symbol of safety. The box is a repository of the treasures of the home as well as the self. The lock means that treasures are well guarded and that the box is protected. The final symbol that we use to know Hestia’s presence in our lives is shelter. The shelter represents Hestia’s protective qualities. In this Goddess’s presence, we feel at home with ourselves. As the winter and cold weather approaches, this is the time of year when we stay close to home and keep the home fires burning. We keep our sacred connection to Goddess by honoring the natural time and rhythm of “going within” whether it is symbolically or literally or both. When we gather in our homes, at or our hearth or stove, this symbolizes and helps us to recognize the sacred power of home and family. What better way to simply honor the Goddess Hestia with the sacred act of cooking warm, healthy and satisfying foods. The cold weather and the winter months are part of the turning of the sacred wheel of Goddess worship and honoring the cycle and passing of the year in synch with Her and Her rhythms. Please find time to honor this sacred time of going within and staying home by making nutritious and warming foods for those you love. Hearty Lentil Soup 2 cups dry green, red or brown lentils 4-6 cups water 2 cups gluten free organic chicken or vegetable broth 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 cloves garlic, chopped 2 medium onions, diced 6 carrots, peeled and sliced thinly into coins 10 oz package frozen spinach ½ teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon chili powder Sea salt and pepper to taste
1. Take lentils and place them in a deep contained and cover with three inches of water. Place lid on container and place lentils aside soaking for at least 8 hours. Do not refrigerate them. This is just to soak them to soften and cook quicker.
2. Rinse lentils well and put in a large stock pot or slow cooker with all the other ingredients. Cook on medium heat and let soup come to a boil. Simmer on low for 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on desired consistency. If the lentils expand too much and absorb too much liquid, add more water or broth to achieve desired thickness. 3. Helpful hint for crock pot cooking, I just put everything in the crock pot and put it on low heat and let it cook for 4 hours. That is how long it took my pot to cook the carrots fully. You may have to monitor you crock pot the first time you make this soup for length of time to cook. Chicken and White Bean Stew
1 boneless chicken breast cut into 1 inch pieces (bite sized) 1-14 ounce can organic diced tomatoes 1-8 ounce can organic tomato sauce 1-15 ounce can organic cannelloni (white kidney) beans 1-15 ounce organic artichoke hearts 2 tablespoons olive oil 2-3 cloves minced garlic 2 tablespoons basil ½ teaspoon sea salt Pepper to taste
1.
In a large skillet or saucepan, sauté the minced garlic in olive oil over medium heat.
2.
Add the chicken and the brown it.
3.
Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans, artichokes, basil, salt and pepper.
4.
Cover and simmer on low for 15-20 minutes or until chicken is thoroughly cooked.
Cook’s hint: 2 large diced fresh tomatoes may be used instead of canned diced tomatoes. Add 2 cans of tomato sauce instead of 1. This dish serves nicely in bowls with a side salad.

Almost everywhere in the northern hemisphere the signs of Fall settling deeply in are upon us; the waning Sun, the cooling air, the brilliant colors of red, yellow, orange and shades of brown. Those rich warm colors are actually present throughout the entire growing season, but the chlorophyll, produced from the Sun, masks the brilliant colors from showing. Once the Sun starts to wane and the temperatures get colder, the chlorophyll subsides allowing the other colors present in the leaf to emerge. In my video about letting go, I talk about having the courage to let go of things that it is time to let go of and to try new things when opportunities arise. Really take stock of your life during this time. What really makes us feel fulfilled and balanced, both spiritually and in our mundane lives? What is missing that you want or have always thought you would have in your life? When you let go of all that needs to go you are creating conscious intention to bring those things you want into your life. Once you do that, like the leaf, this will allow your other “colors� to come through for the whole world to see. The brilliant shades of you will emerge and find their way to the surface, and trust me; those feelings are like no other. Enjoy this exhilarating time of still metamorphosis, for soon, change will come.
Recommended Spell for this video – “Spell to Let Go” on Page 202-3 in Grandmother of Time by Z. Budapest. October is a good time to tidy up the soul. First make a list of things that have got to go, such as resentment of friends or enemies, anger at yourself (potent and common garbage). Just think through your life to see what you no longer need. Go through your soul as if it were a long-forgotten attic and see where cleaning up is way overdue, then write down what you find. I am not talking about resentments like those you feel if you’re just divorced, if you got ripped off, if had to leave a job due to harassment, if you lost a promotion because you were not a man. These oppressions are not your doing, so please don’t blame yourself for them. Find groups with which to work them through and channel your anger into political activism, which can give your life more meaning. Create an altar with black cloth, the color of the universe, the color of chaos, where everything comes from and to which everything must return. Place on the cloth some fallen leaves, representing the natural order of the seasons and the discarded past. The fallen leaves are beautiful, but they are meant to become compost; to compost is where all our bad garbage is going as well. Place your list of psychic garbage on the table, light two black candles, one on either side, and burn some dispelling incense. If you can’t find incense specifically made for this purpose, use sandalwood, frankincense, myrrh, or cedar. When you pray to the Goddess, always talk normally, as if to your own sweet mama. You can say: Dearest Goddess, I have a long way this year, carrying my burdens. I would like to take them off my shoulders and give them back to you to recycle, to bury, to compost. Here, I offer you my resentments against friends, family, and {fill in your own needs here] and ask you to absorb them into your black universe. Relieve me of them and allow me to walk more lightly. Burn your list in the flames of your candles. Now imagine all these feelings evaporating into smoke, and say something like: I feel all light, happy and cleansed now. Dearest Goddess, you are my true strength and guide. I thank you for being accessible and answering your children’s call. I honor you and thank you. Gather all the things that were part of your meditation and cast them into a living body of water. When you cast them off, don’t look back. Even let go your thoughts about the ritual.

In the starlight under The dark sacred moon Her lantern is lifted She points, you obey. The grandmother, earth mother Is stern; is demanding. You can, my daughter! You are Goddess! Find the Way! From the dark of the moon To the depths of the earth In the arms of the mother Your secrets you hold. They grow and mature In the dark of the winter Waiting for Springtime When they can unfold.
Goddess in the City I seek Goddess in everything. I look for her in signs, omens and in nature. I hear her voice in the laughter of the children and the birds that sing. When the wheel turns once again, I look to see her expressions in the changing foliage in the landscapes around me.. Goddess is alive, and she is afoot but living in the city makes it a little more difficult to see her natural wonders in the land without a some extra effort. Often, I feel I need to reconnect with Goddess and with the spirits of our land through not only ceremony, meditation and ritual but through her landscapes. I want to see, feel and experience her forms and natural shapes but that is a difficult task to carry out when you are surrounded mostly by concrete and steel buildings. Much of Her natural shape has been torn into and built on in the name of development and modernization. In an industrial and large city such as Akron, Ohio, one must search high and low between houses an arm length apart on overcrowded streets. One must be willing to travel through miles of pavement passing by hundreds of businesses, offices, movie theaters, tattoo shops and store fronts in hopes to get glance of her beauty between. Ohio is considered a flatland state. We have many hills and deep valleys but we do not have mountains. Sometimes I think it would make living in the city a little nicer in Ohio if it were a mountain state. At the least, one would only have to look over their shoulder to see her expressions in land not covered up, tore down and destroyed in the name of modernization. The houses in my neighborhood each sit on plenty of acreage and most people around here take pride and joy in sprucing up their surroundings with plants and replanting trees. In this act alone I see the presence of the Goddess around my neighborhood and it makes me proud. It is such an indescribable feeling to take my little pug dog, Mei-Shu Pierre out for a walk and as I look at the scenery, still feel like Goddess is expressing Herself through the work of my neighbors efforts. Apart from peeping Goddess out throughout the neighborhood, depending on the business, one might be able to see other expressions of her as well. The best place to see the natural shapes and forms of Goddess expression in landscape is through the local park. Save for some of the paved roads and parking lots, and pavilions throughout them, they seem to be the only remains of natural and for the most part, untouched land.
One of the most beautiful parks in Akron is the Sand Run Metro Park. Almost 1,000 acres of natural land, areas in the park were once campsites for the Mingo Indians. Other parts of the park, known as Portage Path trail was an important Native American trail between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. Understanding a little about the history of the land I am exploring helps me reconnect much more with the spirits of that land. Sometimes, when walking and being completely present, I know the spirits of the land are happy that I am there, that I notice it’s raw and natural beauty. It is my feeling the land in which we live longs to be noticed, remembered and recognized. From the Metro Park website: “In the cool, shady ravines of Sand Run and its tributary streams, hemlocks, ferns, skunk cabbage and large colonies of horsetails grow. Each spring, large-flowered trilliums and other seasonal blooms appear, including bishop's cap, foam flower, bloodroot and pale violet. The towering forest is home to red, gray, black and fox squirrels; screech, barred and great horned owls; and pileated woodpeckers. Red-tailed hawks roost in the treetops when they are not soaring over the ridges. Many rare species inhabit the park, including sharp-shinned hawks, butternut trees, and native orchids. Near the intersection of Sand Run Parkway and Merriman Road is a small wetland that has become a highly productive amphibian breeding area. Every spring, the parkway is closed on
nights when spotted salamanders migrate to this area for mating. The phenomenon has become a popular attraction for robust nature enthusiasts who often stand in the rain to witness hundreds of salamanders crossing the road. Other amphibians that breed in this area include spring peepers, wood frogs, American toads and green frogs.�---Summit County Metro Park This is one of my favorite places where the girls and I visit. Here we can see Goddess in the city express herself though not only her natural curves, her different shapes and forms of the land in the many hills and low valleys and trees but in the wildlife as well. Witnessing even the salamander scoot across the road, all keeping up with the natural rhythm of nature, the earth and Goddess herself can be a spiritual experience; depending on how deep one’s love is of Goddess and the land. Walking through the land and feeling the earth beneath my feet, lying on her sacred ground, listening to her heartbeat, I feel a healing take place within me. Sometimes it is a healing so strong I never realized how much I was in need of it until the healing took place. It seems to be the trend of my local community to attend workshops, drum-circles and meet and greets in the local occult shop, UU church or other setting for spiritual nourishment. For me personally, I need more. I need to feel the Earth mother under my feet. I need to see and feel her, walk into her deep valleys, into her womb, climb up her hills that shape her breasts and her big pregnant belly. I need to dip my toes in her running streams and sit under her many trees. I need to dig my hands into the wet earth, to smell her natural sent unpolluted by cars and chemical plants. There is not a single drum circle, workshop, meet and greet or any other event that can begin to rival the magick of the experience of Goddess of the green earth. That is a magick and an energy that is of the land itself. It is an energy ancestor spirits of the land and of Goddess that I take with me to nurture and feed me threefold, mind, body and spirit until I need to connect with her again. This is how I need to connect with Goddess in the city and this is how I am teaching my daughters to connect. Mother always knows best.

RECOVERING & RECLAIMING: ENTERING THE SHADOWS I just returned from our annual Halloween Gathering in the Sierras. I held it early this year, not only to beat the snow but to be able to hold a Full Moon Circle here in our local Moon Lodge on Halloween night. I just canยนt seem to get enough of this sacred time, probably because I was born on the new moon at Samhain and have always loved entering the Fall season with its many celebrations. I also enjoy the trick-or-treaters, which is a lot of fun too, and on my birthday this year, I'll be sixty-four! Although we celebrate our ancient fire festivals or cross-quarter sabbats at certain times of the month on our modern calendars... Halloween, Candlemas, Beltane and Lammas are in full power when the sun enters 15 degrees of their fixed signs of Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus or Leo, providing lingering energies, opportunities to ponder their vital significance and heal at deeper levels in our recovery from Patriarchy. As we penetrate the veil at Halloween, then move into the darker times of November, it is fitting to embrace our mortality as well as immortality.... to remember our ancestors or dearly departed... to hold mock-suppers or build altars that honor friends or relatives that have crossed over... with pictures, candles, herbs, incense and stones that mark the meaning of their existence in our lives. Itยนs also a good time to reminisce, to remember who we are and where we come from, to realize how unique and special we really are... to dress in costumes or different disguises.... and to cherish the precious time we have here on Earth. Also known as the Witches New Year, Halloween marks the end of a cycle and ushers us into the dark tomb-womb underworld of the Goddess to ready ourselves for our coming rebirth at Yule. It marks a quieter time of relaxation, introspection, reflection, transition and release; a time to relinquish all that is no longer useful in our lives; to burn our cauldrons or banish unwanted energies that no longer serve us. In our Halloween ritual this year we shared letters to our dearly departed and burned all that we needed torelinquish to start a new cycle successfully. We've also been studying the dark goddesses this season in our weekly circles.... Inanna, Ereskigal, Persephone, Hecate, Cerridwen, Kali, Medusa, Lilith, Pele, Sekhmet and others..... so we can get in touch with those parts of ourselves and ultimately heal from all that we've hidden in the shadows of our psyches.
This special time of year also reflects our life as Crone for it always reflects the sunset of our lives... a time of maturity, retirement, enjoyment, appreciation, rest, thanksgiving, aging and death. A time of
transition, when we let go and enjoy the moments we have left... a time of great power, mystery and introspection. The image of Crone symbolizes the deepest and wisest part of our psyche, that which retains sacred knowledge and wisdom from past experience and previous lifetimes. She is the Wisewoman, Gatekeeper of the mysteries. She mirrors our inner wisdom, power and mysticism at any age. In Women Mysteries, the Crone is pictured in many ways: the wise old grandmother... the hag, the magical witch... the seer, visionary, healer or just a modern granny taking pleasure in artistic projects, gardening, sewing or baking, but whatever face we give her she symbolizes one who has sacred knowledge or lived long enough to gather wisdom from the experiences of life. The Cronetime mirrors our third destiny or the aspect of the Goddess that destroys all that has outgrown its usefulness. Sometimes she is seen with a pair of cutting shears, like the reaper cutting away the grain, for she represents that part of ourselves that cuts away anything that is no longer needed to make way for the new. The Crone recedes for future generations knowing she's had enough time in the limelight. She listens, guides or enjoys time alone in quiet repose. She holds a vision for humanity with reverent respect for life, knowing she's been a useful tool in her evolving generation, that her place in the scheme of things has served good purpose. The Crone is content with wisdom gained from her long years of experience. She knows what consequences follow certain actions and doesn't exert energy in needless conversations. She enjoys silence or the peace that comes with acceptance. She observes with detachment and non-judgment. She lives and let’s live... yet speaks her truth without fear and tolerates those that follow a different drummer. She knows time is running short and would rather spend hers enjoying simple treasures of life... like gazing at a beautiful sunset, taking nature walks, reading books, doing her life work, making memories or reminiscing about days gone by. The Crone is you and me. As we make our descent into the shadows this season, let's bask in the reflections of the time and embrace who we are. Let's enter the caves and stir the cauldron of transformation as we speak our truth, embrace the dark goddesses, honor our ancestors, reclaim our deep mysteries and embrace the wisdom of the Crone deep within us. Let us say NO to the unacceptable and banish all that causes dysfunctions in our lives. And last but not least, let's remember: When the Women Heal, the Earth Heals. Blessed Be.

The Aging Ones In Shadowtime, I rest awhile to watch the leaves with wistful smiles as winds blow soft to lift them free from every branch and sacred tree...
The leaves are miming aging ones who dance with fate ‘til life is done descending into sweet repose while leaving stories to be told.....
And as they drift on wisps of air they swirl and twirl without a care dancing toward their destiny in graceful synchronicity....
For nothing's that important now that once showed worry on the brow, the hands of time have set them free to bask in cherished memories...
They twist and fly and turn around then finally rest upon the ground letting go with dignity in Autumn's final symphony....
With swiftness gone & movements slow they take the time to ebb and flow enjoying warmth in days of sun or moonlight glow when darkness comes....
And when the days of winter come they turn to compost, every one, cuddling safe in Mother Earth to rest in peace & dream rebirth...

From the Kitchen of a Country Witch Fall is this woman’s idea of a perfect time of year. The tamaracks are changing their garments and lighting up the mountains with their golden aura. I love the chilly evenings, despise the cold mornings but feel thankful for the warmth of our wood stove and a great cup of coffee. Fall is a time of preparation around here. The remaining bits of harvest are quickly brought in from the fields; winterizing the home and yard has been put off until the last possible second; and the rush is on every weekend to cut down enough dead tree snags to heat our home for the winter. I feel like a busy squirrel gathering her nuts for the winter. The herbs are harvested; the making of vinegars, syrups, teas and canned veggies is coming to an end. Soon it will be time to quietly settle in and await the winter chill. The hustle of bustle of the city is replaced with the hustle and bustle of the geese flying overhead, the bears gathering the last of the fruit from our apple trees, and the spiders making their way indoors hopeful I won’t shoo them right back out. Time moves slowly here in the wilds of Montana. With the cooler temperatures, warm fuzzy sweaters and the end of my son’s football season it is time to break out the fall recipes. Recipes for soups, ciders, and fall disinfecting cleaners. Hey, a country witch has to cover all her bases! I have included my favorite fall recipes and a little herbal lore for this November’s Goddess Magazine with only one edict: Enjoy! Enjoy the process and enjoy your life! Much of the ingredients come from the abundance of my summer garden but even if you are not a witch in the country living off the land….you should be able to find the ingredients for these wonderful recipes!
Chocolate Mint and Rose Tea 4 cups of dried peppermint ½ cup of dried pink roses (I like the hot pink ones!) 2 tbls of dried orange rind Mix in a bowl and store in a glass jar. When you are ready for a cup, boil your water and add the dry ingredients to a tea ball and steep. In your cup add: Finely grated dark chocolate Sweeten with honey or Stevia
Bacon and Apple Chowder A soup pot of chicken broth Cubed chicken cooked in the broth 1 Package of bacon (cooked and finely chopped) 4 granny smith apples: I like mine thinly sliced for this recipe…I slice mine so the star may be seen! One Sweet onion finely chopped 1 Can of small red beans 1 cup of corn (frozen is best…not canned) 1 can of stewed tomatoes 4 cloves garlic Rosemary, thyme, sea salt and pepper to taste ¼ cup apple cider vinegar Mix all your ingredients and cook until done.
Pumpkin and Red Pepper Bisque I use fresh pie pumpkins ( quarter and seed; steam until soft) If you do not have access to a fresh pie pumpkin, then just use two large cans of pumpkin from the store. Ingredients: 2 large cans of pureed pumpkin 1 sweet onion sautéed 2 roasted red bells (Broil in oven, turning as side turn brown. Place in ziplock bag until cool; then peel off the skin) Minced garlic to taste 5 cans of chicken broth (veggie if you don’t eat meat products) 1 large container of half and half Salt and White Pepper to taste Mix all the above ingredients in a soup pan and cook on medium heat. Turn to low heat once it is warmed through until ready to serve. We serve this with a wonderful rosemary wheat bread.
Stuffed Pumpkin 1 stick of butter 1 Medium Size Pumpkin or Hubbard squash (cut off the top and clean the seeds and pulp out.) My partner says any good country witch will know what a Hubbard is… LOL. 2 pounds of breakfast sausage (can be omitted for vegetarians) 1 medium onion 1 cup of chopped celery 1 cup grated carrots 4tbl of minced garlic Enough cooked brown rice to fill the pumpkin ( we also cook up a cup of wild rice to mix in with this) 1 bag of cransins (dried cranberries) 4 green apples chopped Sage, salt, pepper and rosemary to taste
Sautee the garlic, onions, celery and carrots with the stick of butter until almost done. Add the cooked sausage, rice, herbs, and all the rest of the ingredients. Mix and stuff into the pumpkin. Place the lid back on the pumpkin and bake until a fork can be easily inserted through the pumpkin or squash and the inside ingredients are bubbly.
Homemade Hot Cider 1 gallon of apple juice ½ gallon of white grape juice A small handful of cloves 5-7 cinnamon sticks 1 large orange (sliced thinly) Mix all the ingredients in a soup pan or crock pot, and float the oranges on top. Keep warm throughout the day or evening….it makes the house smell heavenly. As it cooks down you can add more juice or a little water!
Thieves’ Oil and Vinegar This year there has been a lot worry and angst over health issues nationwide. I took some extra time in preparing for winter colds this season, making sure I gathered enough herbs to make my favorite Thieves recipe. I have experimented with several and combined a few and come up with a couple of favorites. Thieves’ oil comes with a little folk lore surrounding it. This country girl loves a good tale around the fire, especially when it comes with a little concocting in the kitchen. I thought share with you my favorite recipes for preparing my family and home for the cold and flu season. Herb lore states that while the plague was raging in Europe, there began a rash of burglaries and looting of houses of plague victims. However, no effort was made to apprehend these thieves as it was assumed they would succumb to the plague and this would be punishment enough for their crimes. The thieves carried on for a while before the authorities finally began pursuit of bringing them to justice. Their interest was in finding out how they were avoiding the dreaded plague. Once the burglars had been apprehended, they struck a bargain with the authorities, in which they would be released in exchange for their secret of immunity to the deadly plague. They gave up their herbal formula and thus thieves’ oil became known. The thieves would soak cloths of the oil and vinegar and herbs and wear them into the houses of plague victims, and remain healthy. I have included the recipes for the Thieves’ Oil and Vinegar. It is now believed by many that Thieves Formula may offer some protection against the flu, smallpox, and other virus’. While I cannot attest to these claims, I do feel our household has benefited from its use. As with any herbal formula, ask your doctor or pharmacist, use caution and common sense.

FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR 1 part lavender, dried 1 part sage, dried 1 part thyme, dried 1 part lemon balm (melissa), dried 1 part hyssop, dried 1 part peppermint, dried 1 handful garlic cloves Raw (unpasteurized), organic apple cider vinegar • In a glass jar, place all dry ingredients. • Add raw (unpasteurized), organic apple cider vinegar to cover • Place jar in a cool place and let sit, at room temperature, for six weeks. • Strain off herbs and garlic, and decant to a glass bottle or jar with a tight fitting lid. Possible Applications (use common sense and caution) • Take a teaspoonful several times daily. • Add to salads either directly or in a salad dressing. • For personal protection, add a teaspoonful to bath water. • Use as a topical spray for disinfecting surfaces and/or skin

ALTERNATIVE FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR (do not use this internally and use caution when using these ingredients) wormwood meadowsweet juniper berries rosemary camphor sage cinnamon cloves white wine vinegar
FOUR THIEVES OIL 1 part eucalyptus 1 part rosemary 1 part cinnamon 1 part clove 1 part lemon 1 part peppermint oil Carrier oil (olive, jojoba, or your choice) Mix Place 50 drops of each oil in a 2 oz. bottle and then top it off with jojoba or apricot oil
An alternative recipe: 200 drops Clove Bud Oil 175 drops Lemon Oil 100 drops Cinnamon Oil 75 drops Eucalyptus Oil 50 drops Rosemary 25 drops Peppermint Oil Mix with jojoba or Apricot oil. Possible applications (Use with caution, common sense and where applicable check with your physician): • Apply 1-2 drops of Four Thieves on the bottoms of the feet and on the nape of the neck. • Apply under the arms and on the chest. • Diffuse for 20 minutes or less at work or at home.

Blessings Sisters in Goddess! I’ve had my head buried deep inside the Dianic University this past month. Z and I put together another new class for you. This one is the Dianic Feminist Philosophies class that fulfills the first requirement of the Dianic Priestess Clergy training, but any sister is welcome to take the class too. It’s a powerhouse class and talks to the foundations of our Dianic Tradition. I’ve also hooked up another computer to a cassette player and have it recording all the boxes full of audio cassette tapes that Z has made over the past thirty-five plus years. It’s amazing to listen to voice from the past and hear the intensity and wisdoms that are coming forward to us from the past. Strong feminist voices, and of course Z’s voice … her younger self. It’s an education in and of itself just listening to these tapes, and soon most of them will be in the various classes in the Dianic University. My next project after that is to hook up another computer and convert the boxes of seven years worth of Z’s 13th Heaven TV shows from video to DVD. That’s going to be exciting! Sorry, but I don’t have a book review for you this month. There’s four of us busy reading still and writing our reviews, but we all missed the deadline. Hopefully next month will be full of book reviews.

Dianic Wiccan Clergy Priestess Overview It is the goal of the Women’s Spirituality Forum to provide our members with herstorical and philosophical foundations of the Dianic Tradition; including ritual and spiritual practices from which to provide Clergy Priestess services to the public. Dianic Tradition is an ancient Goddess and woman-centered, Earth-based, feminist denomination of Wiccan religion. We are a teaching tradition. In the Dianic Tradition, clergy are required to complete course work that enriches their understanding of the sacred feminine Craft through cognitive and practical hands-on experiences to use in their roles as clergy priestesses to the Goddess and Her women.
What is Dianic Clergy? Clergy is a Greek word meaning “heritage” and from its origins, developed into a name for the persons who kept records and practices of the heritage. In the Dianic Tradition, we refer to the Clergy Priestesses as the active keepers and practitioners of our traditions, records and practices. These are Goddess priestess women who provide spiritual support to women (and their families) worldwide; and support women’s rights as feminists.
Ordained Dianic Clergy is not the same as an Ordained Daughter of Z Budapest. Ordained Daughter is an honorary title for exemplary community service gifted by Z Budapest directly. It has no legal ties to the Women’s Spirituality Forum.
What can I do with this? Ordained Dianic Clergy can perform public rituals, including marriage rites, under the legal auspicious of the Women’s Spirituality Forum non-profit status. The Women’s Spirituality Forum, Inc. is a 501 ( c ) (3) tax-exempt religious, educational, and charitable organization. Income you earn as Dianic Clergy and keep is not tax deductible. Income you donate to the Women’s Spirituality Forum, Inc. is tax deductible. The same is true for portions of the income donated to the Women’s Spirituality Forum, Inc., but only the amount of the donated portion would be tax deductible.
What is expected from students enrolled in this program? The Women’s Spirituality Movement, which reclaimed the Dianic Tradition, was based on two principles of action; movement happens through the written word and through the physical doing. We will require both from you. Expect to produce high quality materials that you will use in your Clergy Priestess practice. We expect you complete your training in a reasonable amount of time. You may not complete this training in any less than a year and a day, and not more than three years and three days. We have made concessions for life’s complications during your period of training by allowing you longer than a year and a day to finish, but also realize that this is a very serious and intensive program for only the most dedicated of Goddess Women. Live In-person trainings are required. Online classes in the Dianic Wicca University are required. More on requirements and fees. Ordination as a Dianic Clergy Priestess is required before you will receive any acknowledgement of successful completion. This ordination must be inperson at an event of our choosing. You will be required to complete an academic body of work using a variety of mediums (written, video, audio, etc.). You will attend in-person events where you will be required to perform leadership skills and be observed. If you meet all these requirements satisfactorily, you will receive ordination as a Clergy Priestess and an official certificate. Who should apply? Women-born-women who live their lives as females, and are seeking to enrich their lives and the lives of others by becoming knowledgeable about and intending to become practicing clergy of the Dianic (Feminist) tradition of Wicca, an Earthbased theology, as founded by Zsuzsanna Budapest.
Statement of Dianic Wiccan Faith As a Goddess and woman-centered, Earth-based, feminist clergy, you must support, defend and be prepared to propagate the basic principles of Dianic Wicca as follows: 1. Maintain a living practice the Manifesto of the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number One. 2. Practice the Dianic Wiccan Rede code of ethics that honors the Earth and Her creatures, "And it harm none, do what thou wilt." 3. Honor a feminine aspect of deity.
