The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries & Book Clubs Florence Nightingale once asked, “Do you think it is possible to be a religion whose essence is common sense?” We found this question in her autobiography, and were excited to answer, “Yes! There is! The Earth religions are such that their essence, their dogma so to speak, is common sense.” It has been a long time since the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries was first published. It started as a small hand printed brochure, then reprinted again and again because the demand, the hunger for spiritual information for women was so deep. Today it holds the herstory of a spiritual awakening of modern women. I see this book as the revolutionary child of suffragist Elisabeth Cady Stanton who saw religion as a major reason for women’s oppression. Religion of her day deified the gender apartheid, and devalued women as decedents of the Eve, who were blamed for the lost paradise (climate change as it turns out) for all humanity. This religious agreement, to blame women for the laws of nature, is most unfair … an ignorant crime against the spirit of women. This is the big bad cloud we had to dispel. We don’t merit punishment. We merit great praise that we as women managed to continue the human race in spite of all those cruel climate changes. The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries gently leads you back to your own sacred heritage as women. Women’s culture included specialized holydays celebrating life, death and all that is in between. That’s the essence of the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries.

In order to value ourselves, we first have to clean up the self-hatred installed into us in childhood. We offer spells for Blessing on our bodies, spells to keep us safe and healthy, blessings on our decisions and goals. When a woman studies this book, she comes away with inner skills taught nowhere else in the universe. Feminism is a good word in the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries, we become aware that we are not the first wave of women coming to consciousness, but we follow a thread of female soul evolution from time immemorial. We learn about other women who contributed to this steady flow of energy from our foremothers to modern times. Most of all we learn how to align ourselves with the universe, and celebrate what is real. The eight major Sabbaths are the turning points of the earth spinning around the sun; the changes of seasons which in turn give us our daily bread. Each has their own rituals and themes, which we can now relearn and practice from the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries. We give special space to organize each other into covens, groups, book study reading clubs, consciousness raising groups, etc. When we gather together our real knowledge grows faster. Nothing has to be taken on faith here, Goddess culture is based on observation. But sisterhood is not a given. That we must learn, through studies and practices which create a loyal web of women-centered family around us. This is a beautiful goal, a worthy goal, and the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries helps us to realize it. If you were too young to experience the benefits of the power groups of the heroic age, now is your chance to become the continuation of that historical thread. We support you as a student, as your time allows. No matter what parts interest you, the herbal remedies, the herbal occult supplies, the meaning of the colors to our psyches, the ancient women festivals, the remnants of the Goddess worshipping fraternities, the politics of food, the philosophy behind the Goddess and gods, this book is a reference to your heritage as a woman. Gloriously in print since 1975, the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries has not lost its pleasing teaching fragrance. Women are still awakening and will continue to do so this century as well. Be part of it. Create yourself … everything else has been done. It’s time you focused on YOU! In previous issues of Goddess magazine, we have talked with you about how to create and support healthy women’s spirituality groups. In this issue we are focusing on Book Groups, Book Reviews and how you can win free books. I changed the Dianic University to an application process for free membership a few months back. One of the questions I asked new applicants was if they worked with The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries. I

was shocked to find how many of the new women entering the world of Dianic sisterhood had not read the Holy Book, many didn’t own it and those who did still hadn’t studied it. Sisters, the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries is the pagan woman’s bible. It holds answers and resources for most of life’s occurrences, and is required reading within the Dianic tradition. Women need the Goddess. They can find her within the pages of the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries. If you want to study the Holy Book with me personally, then I have created the Dianic University for that purpose. If you want to study the Holy Book together without me, then I have just established a new online book group for you to tap into. Women are awakening together. Or you can study solo. Whatever you decide, action is your next step. I have a new radio interview coming out soon on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, a popular spiritual talk radio show. I was on the show last year talking about Women’s Spirituality and the Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries to her listeners. You can listen to the interview here: Women’s Spirituality Movement. This time we discussed another of my favorite topics, Summoning the Fates and working with destiny. Want a taste of the cosmic soup bubbling in Fate's cauldron? Budapest also offers heartfelt advice, exercises, and rituals to help you connect with the Fates and embrace your own unique destiny. You can listen to the interview here from May 19th on: Summoning the Fates. Blessed be,

Z Budapest Editor’s Note: On May 4th, Z had her hip replacement surgery. To date, all is going very well. Z will continue to be in the hospital for the first two weeks of May. Then, she comes home to continue to recover her health. She expects to be up and walking when she attends the Women’s Music Festival early July. She wants everyone to come see her there!

MAY BOOK REVIEW The Uninvited book review by Bobbie Grennier (Book Review Blogger)

I saw the book’s title long before Llewellyn Publishing released it. The Uninvited. I instinctively knew I had to read this book. I emailed a friend of mine who works for this publishing house and asked for a review copy. She forwarded my request to the book’s publicist, and I thought good, that will be an interesting read for me. Then I forgot about it. A few weeks ago, I ran into my friend at the PantheaCon convention. We exchanged hugs, caught up a little and then I asked, “Whatever happened to that book, The Uninvited? Did you guys publish it?” "You didn’t get it?” She asked very surprised. When I said no I didn’t and that I was still very much interested in reviewing it, she promised she’d mail me a copy as soon as she get back to the office. Well, she kept her promise and a few days ago, I found myself starring at The Uninvited. I knew as soon as I saw the book cover’s artwork that if the book were true to the artwork, the author, Steven LaChance, had indeed experienced something other worldly and profoundly evil. I knew this because I too have seen those glowing orange-yellow eyes that look like their molten lava from hell. What is the chance that a man named LaChance, the chance, would chance to find himself in these circumstances of pure chance. It seems his life was cast for him at birth, which is anything but chance. LaChance talks about himself being an individual who’s life purpose is to raise three lovely children and work in the field of the paranormal; waging battle in the war between good and evil. I would recommend The Uninvited to anyone who wanted to scare the bejesus out of themselves, anyone who wanted to understand that there’s more out there than just us, and to anyone who’s also had a similar experience with what some might call a spiritual crisis caused by demons. It’s simply written and because of it, this book can be read by teens and adults alike. Laura Long-Helbig, the English instructor who helped LaChance put this book together did a good job of organizing the author’s story. In an odd way, I was please to read how many similar experiences I had in common with LaChance. For me, it made reading his tale all palatable. I could see where someone who hadn’t had this type of an experience might think he was just making this stuff up. You have to be your own critic, but as for me, I’m sure I’ll be writing La Chance a personal letter someday to thank him for telling his tale. I felt very badly for LaChance in another way as well. This man has some huge woundings from the females in his life. I found myself feeling empathic towards him and wishing that his life had been easier. Sometimes I think we struggle with life when we’re not doing what we’re supposed to. I had my own set

of struggles which ultimately lead me to the same conclusion as this author finally reached. There are some of us who will fight evil and that’s just how it is. The right house, at the right price, for the right family. LaChance’s personal nightmare begins when he moves into an atypical haunted house. There’s far more going on in the Union House than a ghostly haunting. I have to say my favorite character in the whole tale is Mr. Winters, a personality right out of a macabre ghost story. Mr. Winter’s seems totally under the influences of the demons that occupy his land, as he intentionally seeks out families with children to occupy his otherworldly domain. The only thing that would make Mr. Winter’s more a character of doddering evil is if he also sold used cars for a living. Like the author, I too rented a haunted house from my own version of Mr. Winters, minus the hair piece, and that should be a cautionary tale to all readers to be aware when you go into these other houses. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t rent it no matter how good the deal is. You get what you pay for! I did find myself having lots of unanswered questions as I engaged with this book. I wanted more details on the actual investigations done in the Union House. I also would have liked the photos taken during the investigations to have been part of the book or made available online for us to go even deeper with the author’s tale. The author’s website is listed at the back of the book, and he really should take the time to provide more details now that he’s wetted our appetites for more. (www.stevenalachance.com) What you get in this book is a solid story of a father’s love for his children and fellow spiritual warriors. It’s that love that ultimately conquers the evil influences in his life and brings him into his current life’s work. The Uninvited is a cautionary tale in the realm of the unknown that ends in the serenity of love. It’s well worth the read. If you’d like to read it for yourself, then get your own copy of The Uninvited here.

GODDESS HEALS In my massage therapy treatment room, there are images of five healing Goddesses: Kwan Yin, Isis, Tara, Ixchel and Sekhmet. They also represent the five elements: Spirit, Air, Water, Earth and Fire. I call on these Goddesses to help me in my work all the time. There are sacred places on the earth that represent each of these elements and are healing places: Wells, springs, streams and lakes, pits of fine dirt, volcanoes, places where wild herbs grow, mountain tops and caves. I am sure many of us have experienced a place where we felt the Presence of the Goddess and knew that very Presence would heal something about us we needed to be changed and renewed. I like to think that even if a person cannot quite pinpoint it, they feel the Presence of the Goddess in my massage treatment room. Doing a cursory search for names of revered healing Goddesses brings a wealth of names: Brighid, Morgen, Airmid, Aine (Ireland and Britain) Hygeia, Panacea, Iaso, Aegle, Aceso, Angitia (daughters of Aesclepius) Gula, Bau/Baba, Nin-Karak, Nin-Isina, Inanna (Ancient Middle Eastern) Hiiaka (Sister of Pele) Pachamama (Inca) Ixchel (Mayan, Aztec) White Tara (Nepal) Isis (Egypt) Kwan Yin (China, Japan, Vietnam) These Goddesses are associated with herbal healing, healing potions and elixirs, conception, childbirth and midwifery, resurrection, transformational shifts, driving away disease. The ancients understood, as we do today, that illness and disease is about so much more than a fever or aches and pains. Illness can be associated with, and grow from, the mind, the emotions, our past, and our ancestors. Magic is needed to deal with such overarching causal factors.

Ixchel (pronounced “ees-shell“) is one Goddess about which there is a comparatively good amount of information. Some of Her myths still exist, whereas so many of the stories of other healing Goddesses have been lost. Her name means “Lady Rainbow“ or “Rainbow Womyn”. She brought the rains and transformed them into a Divine manifestation with the light shining through the aftermath. She is often pictured in her crone aspect with a jar held upside down pouring out the rain for the people. She is the Bringer of the Rainy Season. Ixchel is the Goddess who taught herbal healing to the people. She is the Goddess of medicine and midwifery, guardian of children and mothers. Ixchel is the Goddess of Regeneration, all cycles of the Earth and womyn's cycles; She is the union of Medicine and Magic. She has Maiden, Mother and Crone aspects and she is shown in ceremonial art in all three. She brings fertility to womyn and to the earth. She is pictured with her arm around a rabbit spirit in one especially endearing carving. She wears a snake as a headdress and holds a medicinal plant. She is related to the moon in its waning phase, and sometimes called Grandmother Moon. She is Goddess of the sweat lodge and its healing effects, where womyn went before and after giving birth. In Her Queen aspect, she is the Goddess who chooses to live alone. As a beautiful young womyn, Ixchel fell in love with the Sun God, but her Grandfather Sky became very upset and sent a lightning bolt to keep them apart, accidentally killing Her. Grieving dragonflies sang over her body for 13 days, at which time she was resurrected and returned to the Sun’s palace. Before long, the Sun God grew jealous, thinking his brother wanted to steal Her away. So the Sun God threw Ixchel out. Then, remorseful and missing Her, he asked her to come back. She went back to him, but then he became jealous again and threw Her out - again. Ixchel was tired of this behavioral nonsense and She withdrew into the night, where She remains hidden when the Sun is around. Hence Her association with the Dark and the Waning Moon. Womyn came to worship her and ask Her for children, ask Her for healings, on Her two sacred islands, Cozumel and Isla de Mujeres. These were where Her prominent shrines were and here She was primarily worshiped. Womyn made pilgrimages there for centuries, and do even today. At the easternmost point of Mesoamerica, Ixchel’s centuries old temple stands and is the first to greet the Sun every day.

Marigolds were offered to her, and still at the holiday of Dia de los Muertos, marigolds are planted on honored graves in cemeteries. We, as womyn, are all related to Ixchel, to Brighid, Inanna, Tara, Isis and Kwan Yin. We hold healing within our very bodies and spirits. We have healing in our hands. We can heal in so many ways - others and ourselves. We always are free to call upon these great Goddesses, like our foremothers before us, for guidance in herbs, oils, teas, elixirs, candles, for healing of spirit and heart and body. The Goddess will lead us to wellness and health in all things if we listen to Her. All manner of things shall be well!

RECOVERING & RECLAIMING: Healing through the Sabbats Well sisters... Spring is here, and along with chirping birds, blossoming trees, budding flowers and meadows of green comes a new sense of self. It¹s a time of waking, growing and creating newness in our lives, The Goddess is alive once more and my childlike wonder marvels at yet another fulfilled promise of the Great Mother, for she truly renews all life after her long winter rest. As we embark on another creative season of desire and action, I also look forward to the sabbats and moontimes I share with my sisters. I love dancing around the wheel and honoring the Sabbats, because they mirror the cycles of our lives as Maiden, Mother, Crone and bring opportunities to reclaim and heal ourselves at deeper levels. On the Sacred Wheel, the East reflects the Spring Season, the waxing time of our lives, starting at Candlemas and ending at Beltane. In Women’s Spirituality it is the Maiden’s Time and mirrors our lives up to puberty, when soul energy is not yet saturated with human indoctrination. It brings reflections of childhood; formidable years when deep patterns are established, when we depend on others for survival. In early years of life we have a sense of being special, but we get talked out of it. Our sense of self as unique and priceless is contradicted by the dysfunctional world around us. Our inner self and the self others tell us we are begins creating confusion and doubt, and although soul consciousness never leaves us, it can be squelched, lost, muffled or overshadowed by the incessant nuisance of the outer world during this time.

Living in Patriarchy can become painful or conflicting in childhood, especially when our inner world doesn¹t match the world outside. I remember many enchanted moments with Mother Nature as a child, times when my free spirit mused alone or my soul dreaming took me to magical places only to be abruptly interrupted by the disharmony going on around me. Sometimes, if our personal world becomes too fearful or painful, we actually relinquish or disassociate with parts of our self to survive whatever ordeal we may be facing, causing fragmentation or roots of codependency to develop. This is why I love Women¹s Spirituality. It enables me to uncover, discover and reclaim buried fragments of myself as a daughter of the Goddess, especially when celebrating the Sabbats.

On the Sacred Wheel, Candlemas mirrors a time of inspiration and individual recognition, when dreams begin merging with the flickering flames of desire stirring within. Longings from the soul with resolutions for inner fulfillment become apparent, so for me it’s a time to reclaim my true soul qualities; to honor the ancient Goddesses and Ancestors that teach and inspire as well as the avatar within. It is also a time to take vows of self love or embrace magical names that better express the unique qualities of the soul. When the wheel turns to Spring Equinox, we focus on the earth’s fertility and new growth, on the resurrecting Goddess and the budding forth of our bodies as well as our souls. This sabbat reflects the peak of childhood, when we once connected with the beauty of life; a time of fun and sacred play. As children we have a deep connection to Nature and magical realms adults no longer see. We play with invisible friends and maintain strong connections with ancestral spirits, guides or elemental spirits. We are open and vulnerable to the enchantment of existence and the magical world of Mother Nature that beckons our participation. In early years we also function primarily as right-brained creatures, sensing oneness with creation; responding to all things tangible: feeling, sound, sight, smell, touch, taste;

pleasures that are pleasing and gratifying to the senses, that bring ecstasy or rapture. We become engrossed in the simplest things; plunge with heartfelt desires into daring adventures or inquisitive explorations. With eyes wide open we learn with vigor and enthusiasm... innocent, gullible, trusting... sometimes without a care in the world, until harsh or painful realities of unconscious humanity smack us one too many times and we shut down. Yes, along with the ecstatic freedom of soul in childhood comes hurtful realities, including indoctrination into Patriarchy and the formulation of left brain thinking. This process not only rips us away from the ecstasy of the soul but also pressures us into focusing on abstract concepts, flooding our brains with sometimes useless information. Left brain conditioning feels like murder to soul consciousness and it is, even though we need left brain awareness to function sufficiently in the mundane world. From an inner perspective, however, it feels as though we are losing our true sense of self... and in many ways we are... at least until we learn to flow between the two realities successfully. Spring Equinox Rituals take us back to magical realms of childhood, when we were unfettered by unconscious humanity or self defeating beliefs. This is very healing to our inner child, because we invoke states of play, fun, beauty, rapture, enchantment, ecstasy and magic in ritual... all that feeds the soul and restores our sense of self. In our Traditions it is very important to do rituals for they promote psychic changes that bring healing by substituting misconceptions with more realistic images of feminine power, beauty and truth. The season of the Maiden finally takes us to the Sabbat of Beltane, and although many in our culture consider this a time of growing adolescence, Mother Nature has new possibilities in store for us as the waning innocence of childhood makes way to puberty. Beltane mirrors our inevitable transition into young adulthood, when bodies bloom and ripen as sexual, orgasmic creatures with desires for mating and unification, when we are moved with biological urges that cannot be denied. In Beltane rituals, the Maypole stands erect with ribbons swaying, ready for winding, a symbol of the male phallus and female juices binding together in heat and passion.

In Women’s Traditions, Beltane also marks the time when the rich blood of life begins flowing in sync with the cycles of the moon, giving us the ability to bring new life into the world. So Rite of Passage Ceremonies can honor girls in Menarche at this time, giving us a chance to share our experiences of Menstruation and heal from some of the shame inflicted on us during puberty in Patriarchy. In my healing process, I had to learn to honor myself during Moon-Time, to take a break from normal activity and spend quiet time musing or taking care of myself. I learned this early in recovery, from some of my trusted mentors and native sisters. A Native American sister in our Circle once shared this rite of passage in her tradition: A mother picks out a sapling tree, usually a cedar, for her daughter on her first moon-time. The mother then shows her daughter how to mix her blood with rain water and offer it to her special tree whenever she can. In this way, the tree becomes part of the girl, linked by the offering of blood, and the girl forms a connection with Earth Mother because she now has a standing relative that is rooted to Earth, one she can go to whenever she needs to communicate, cry, pray or express herself. This Rite of Passage not only teaches the Maiden to honor her moon-time, but provides her with a special Standing One that shared her passage into womanhood and will grow with her for the rest of her days. Also in Native Traditions, a woman retreats from the tribe during moon-time to gain perspective, vision, comfort, renewal and nurturing from the Goddess. This helps a Maiden relate to her mother and grandmother energies as well, to explore herself as a women through every cycle of her life. By offering her blood to her tree as often as possible, she learns to honor her life as woman and her sacred connection to the Earth as a giver and sustainer of life. At Beltane, the Maiden or Virgin aspect of the Great Goddess is mirrored and she is a powerful image indeed for she represents the untouched part of our soul that retains autonomy and power. Virgin doesn¹t refer to sexuality in Dianic Tradition, but to the autonomous woman, whole unto herself... whether celibate, straight or gay... who gives her spirit to NO ONE... who lets no one else define here. So to me, the essence of our Dianic Traditions is to make whole again! The Maiden takes pleasure whenever it suits her, and since she needs no one to define her she doesn’t need others assurance, approval or validation. She is whole within herself. She bows to no one! She is the Soul of Woman, free from indoctrination; fun daring, strong. She stands for justice, truth, fairness. She is the wild untamed feminine: the Amazon, Huntress, Warrior who defends and protects. She dances under the moon and stars without fear. She is at home in the wilderness, runs free in the forest and maintains deep relationships with all things, animals and human. She lives in us and we in her, unstrapped by the laws of convention, society and patriarchy. This is who we honor at Beltane. Springtime brings images of waxing light and powers of the sun warming the earth, and because seeds from deep in the earth are resurrecting, blossoming and growing at this time, so must we. Like spirits of the Air invoked from the East and great eagles that glide the skies, we too must ride the winds of change that sweep away winters decay and cut away illusions of the mind. This brings new learning, open mindedness, knowledge, inspiration and powerful vision as we awaken to new wonders and ever changing processes of healing, growth and expansion, so let’s embrace it. Let us also dance through the Sabbats with joy. Remember, when the Women heal the Earth Heals. Blessed Be.

When crystal balls on Halloween reflect a mystic glow, We honor dear departed souls that left a time ago, Hecate brings quiet repose as magic claims the soul, And shadows cover Mother Earth as seeds gestate below...

May Day mirrors ecstasy & deep orgasmic pleasure As we prance around the Maypole, beating drums together, Diana charges well the night near blazing Beltane fires, And Passion blooms beneath the moon, rousing deep desire....

I love to dance around the wheel as every Sabbat traces, A deep reflection of our life to mirror our many faces, And when our journey’s over, we take the seeds we’ve sown, Along with memories gathered... to mystic paths unknown....

Growing a Goddess Study Circle Back in 2007, Z’s release of the newest edition of The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries inspired me to start a Goddess Study group here in Lake County, Indiana where I live and work. There has long been an open Pagan presence here, but never a big Womyn’s Mysteries/Dianic presence. I knew I couldn’t be the only one, so I figured advertising on the Pagan boards around here was a good way to get started. The first meeting was held at a library, and I had my Holy Book and some materials on the herstory of the Goddess movement, and I waited and hoped. One womon showed up, she and I had a good time talking and sharing. It turned out she was in a small Goddess-oriented circle in Porter County, which is the county just to the east of Lake County. We shared our contact information and it turned out she was on an email list I had started for womyn in the area interested in Goddess Spirituality. Though I felt discouraged that only one womon had shown up, I was heartened that the email list I had started was at least being used as a resource by womyn in the area. I decided to try again the next month. The second month, and for a while there after, the group was four womyn. Janelle, the womon from the first meeting, was joined by Alyce and Tamykah, both of whom were new to Goddess spirituality and very interested to learn as much as they could. We studied quite a bit of the Holy Book, meeting in person when the weather permitted and online in a chat area when the weather was bad. Then I got a copy of Z’s video, Gathering the Goddesses, which was a huge hit! Some issues that studying the book had started for Alyce as far as why we would want to meet without men for circle were answered and she suddenly got it. It turned out that I was the only one of us to have been to any kind of gathering of womyn in a womon-positive space with the intent of celebrating the Goddess. We talked excitedly for hours about how empowering and wonderful that kind of space could be, until we finally had to go home due to the lateness of the hour. It was after this meeting that the group really took off. I had found out at that meeting that Alyce, though she had been a Pagan for several years, knew nothing about the Goddesses, nada, zip. She always invoked a very generic Lady into circle when celebrating with her family or others. She really wanted to learn more and thus the Goddess of the Month was born. The first one was done for Brighid 2008. Since it was nearly February, it seemed the logical place to start. To give the Goddess of the Month writings some place for the womyn to look at them if they wanted to go back to them later, I started a website for our group and we came up with a name, The Lake Area Goddesses Society.

After more than thirty years in circulation, The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries is still a ground-breaking book in the forefront of women’s spirituality.

You can get autographed copies of Z's books here! Those are our roots as a group. It’s been 18 months since the first meeting, and we have had different womyn show up for different things once we had finished the Holy Book. One thing that has been a constant has been the Goddess of the Month, but otherwise we have never been afraid to change things up. As a result our group has explored a lot of different aspects of feminism and Goddess Spirituality. One month we had a film marathon, watching all three of Donna Read’s documentaries in succession one cold and cloudy afternoon. Another month we had planned a picnic to get out and enjoy the summer weather and celebrate, however, the tornado watches and severe thunderstorms we had that day changed our minds. Instead we met online and contemplated the power of Mother Nature. Back this last December we had a really powerful meeting where we discussed the need for the Goddess in womyn’s lives and the profound impact that finding the Goddess had on us all. In February the Goddess of Discord showed up to a showing of Max Dashu’s documentary Women’s Power, and what had promised to be a fascinating discussion on the suppression of womyn’s herstory throughout patriarchal times was nearly sidelined by a womon who, though she purported to be a feminist, spent the whole discussion period trying to use verbal stoppers on anyone who wanted to get into a deep dialogue. Such pithy comments as, “That’s a nice idea, but all women are bitches,” fell from her lips. We continued undaunted for as long as we could until it was close to the time we needed to vacate the room. The most recent meeting was a great success! I had the pleasure of leading the womyn who assembled in their first Self-Blessing. I got to our site early to help Janelle set up. We had vases full of flowers, a beautiful bright blue tray set out with chocolates of many kinds and a big tray of fresh fruits were on a table to one side, the air was scented with a subtle sandalwood incense, beautiful Goddess music was playing, and little spray bottles filled with a Self-Blessing spray I created were placed where each womon

could use one easily. When the other womyn arrived, we sat and talked for a while, reconnecting with those we already knew and meeting those new to the group. I was overjoyed to meet a mother and her two twenty-something daughters who had come from a town near me for this wonderful occasion. We started with a breathing meditation to get everyone into a calm and magickal mindset. Then we started the Self-Blessing, using the spray instead of the water and wine, which worked quite well. The fragrance of the lavender being breathed in for the blessing of the nose and mouth heightened the experience, and when we were done our clothes and bodies kept the fragrance which we had sprayed all over, keeping the feeling of the blessing with us as we sat and enjoyed the fruit and chocolates and talked. We’re already talking about what we want to do next month! As you can see, there is no real secret to making a group that will grow and last except maybe this: be flexible. Don’t be afraid to roll with whatever challenges the Goddess and the womyn in your group send you. Also, communicate, communicate, communicate! In this world of instant gratification, it’s hard to build things that last because people are so accustomed to moving on to the whim-du-jour. Finding ways to share with others your passion and your love of the Goddess will strengthen the group and keep new womyn coming in to see what’s so wonderful. Having a web presence also helps, because the internet is used so much by womyn anymore to find sisterhood and sharing. I wish you all joy and good fortune in creating and spreading Sisterhood in your local communities. The more we switch people on the Goddess, the better this world will be! If you ever want to check out what our group is doing, drop by our website. We’re always happy to have womyn who are in the area show up for our events, even if they’re just in the area for a visit.

Aradia and Witchcraft: Charge of Aradia Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month when the moon is full, then you shall come together at some deserted place, or where there are woods, and give worship to She who is Queen of all Witches. Come together inside a circle, and secrets that are yet unknown shall be revealed. And your mind must be free and also your spirit, and as a sign that you are truly free, you shall be naked in your rites. And you shall rejoice and sing, making music and love. For this is the essence of spirit and the knowledge of joy. Be true to your own beliefs, and keep to the Ways, beyond all obstacles. For ours is the key to the mysteries and the cycle of rebirth, which opens the way to the Womb of Enlightenment. I am the spirit of the Witches all, and this is joy and peace and harmony. In life does the Queen of all Witches reveal the knowledge of spirit. And from death does the Queen deliver you to peace. When I shall have departed from this world, in memory of me make cakes of grain, wine, and honey. These shall you shape like the moon, and then partake of wine and cakes in my memory. For I have been sent to you by the Spirits of Old, and I have come that you may be delivered from all slavery. I am the daughter of the sun and the moon, and even though I have been born into this world, my race is of the stars. Give offerings all to She who is our Mother. For She is the beauty of the Green Wood, and the light of the moon among the stars, and the mystery which gives life, and always calls us to come together in Her name. Let Her worship be the ways within your heart, for all acts of love and pleasure are like rituals to the Goddess. But to all who seek Her, know that you’re seeking and desire will reward you not, until you realize the secret. Because if that which you seek is not found within your inner self, you will never find it from without. For She has been with you since you entered into the ways, and She is that which awaits at your journey’s end. According to legend, Aradia was born in 1313 in the town of Volterra in Northern Italy. She gathered a small band of followers and went about the countryside, teaching and preaching about the Old Religion of Italy. Aradia spoke of an Age of Reason to come that would replace the Age of the Son. When she

departed, Aradia requested that a meal be held in Her honor, that she may be remembered for future generations. (Excerpt from Hereditary Witchcraft Secrets of the Old Religion, by Raven Grimassi)

According to Charles Leland, in his book Aradia, Gospel of the Witches, Aradia is the messianic daughter of Goddess Diana and Lucifer. She is instructed by her mother, Diana, to go to earth below and become a teacher of women and men. She is to teach Witchcraft to the oppressed masses of Goddess worshippers. Her name is likely derived from the Italian form of Herodias, which is written and referred to as “Heroiade” or “Erodiade”. In Italian folklore Erodiade was believed to fly through the air on her broom with or without a train of other women. Today, Witches can say Aradia is a Dianic Goddess. Her archetype is of strength and she is lovely and charismatic. She is a timeless spiritual entity who embodies power, beauty, and love of the wild places. Her name is derived from Heroidas, Queen of the Witches. There is a biblical reference to Herodias in medieval Christian folklore. She was a condemned spirit like the Wandering Jew. Herodias was condemned to wander the sky until the end of time. In the 9 th century, the church had documented that they had reports of women who profess to follow Diana the pagan Goddess or Heroiades. Four hundered years later in the 12th century, the church refers to women who claim that they go out at night

on the backs of animals with Erodiade, and they also mention the Goddesses Diana and Minerva. The church has tried to put sanctions on any people, women especially who were thought to practice Witchcraft or Folk craft. Aradia was sent to earth as a prophetess of the religion of witchcraft. Her mission was to protect the oppressed, women especially from feudalism. She carries her broom stave as a symbol of her power; she wears her cloak of mystery. She has knowledge of every plant and gave a fright to the Inquisition. She taught women how to invoke Her at the full moon at midnight, and sprinkling salt from a red bag while asking favors of the Goddess. With Her quiet authority She proclaims to witches “never again the burning times”. The Inquisition started before the 12th century. It occurred in Europe and Great Britain as the Western Christian Church spread. The church tried to suppress any activity that is viewed as heresy. There are four distinct periods of the Inquisition in Europe. 1. Medieval which lasted from 1184-12305 2. Spanish which lasted from 1478-1834 3. Portuguese which lasted from 1542-1860 4. Roman which lasted from 1542-1860. In the Early Middle Ages, a historical document from 400 AD from the church at that time, stating that witchcraft is heresy. Later in 785 AD the church went so far as to say it was against the law to even believe in witchcraft. This change from Paganism and Earth based religions, and the spread of the Christian and Protestant churches influence with the royals during this time over the next 400 years saw the beginnings of making accusations and finger pointing at each other’s beliefs.

The Witch hunts occurred during the early Modern period of history from 1480-1700. This period of history spanned the upheavals of the Reformation and the Thirty Years War. Many cultures during these Burning Times, throughout the modern and ancient world have reacted to allegations of witchcraft and superstitious fear and awe. They have killed any alleged practitioners outright or shunned it as quackery, extortion or fraud. The rise of the witch craze began in the 1200’s. Fear of witches grew in the following 200 years, until the middle Ages. It was in this time that the fear became an unreasonable and panicked thing which took on a life of its own. This fear continued and began growing 200 years until 1450. The rising fear of witches was concurrent with the rise of Renaissance magic. Great humanists of those times called it “high magic” that Neo-Platonist and Aristolians practiced it. These groups took great pains at the time to insist that magic was wise, benevolent, and nothing like witchcraft. Popular Neopagan beliefs today suggest that the witches were female shamans or village healers, cunning folk. They were made into malicious figures by Christian and Church propaganda. European historical records of these times accounts for 100,000 killed for witchcraft and heresy from 1500-1700’s. Modern estimates of these numbers are 9-12 million women killed by torture, stoning, and drowning. These women were the healers and the wise women. They were midwives and herbalists. They were the village cunning woman and wise woman. They were killed because they threatened patriarchy and the male based medical system of doctors and landowners. This hysteria spread to the United States and the colonies. In Salem, Massachusetts, from February 1692-May 1693 156 people were arrested and imprisoned for witchcraft and heresy. Of these people, 19 were executed. They were likely killed because Puritanical belief system, women were property; they were to been seen and not heard. Many were killed because wealthy land owners didn’t want a woman to own property, so widows and women over 40 were especially vulnerable to the accusation of being a witch. Today, we can worship the Goddess and practice Witchcraft legally. There is still is great fear among the general public over who Witches are and what we do. We are your neighbors, your sisters, your mothers, your friends. We are the ones who have said yes to the call from the Goddess. We embark on a path of enlightenment and greater good for ourselves and the world as well. May women and Witches everywhere be an example to others, that we are not to be feared. We walk the path of the wise and ancient ways in this world here and now. Never forget those who have gone before. Never forget those who were persecuted and killed for their beliefs. Never again the burning times!

Breath in deeply and feel the power within. Feel the power of your chosen Goddess flow within you. Feel Her presence with you. Hold the glass of water in both hands. Feel your power and the power of the Goddess. Feel this power flowing through the water... see it begin to glow with the power of healing, and chant: Healing Flows into this water Flowing from Her sacred well.

Continue chanting and charging the water until you KNOW the water holds healing power. Set the water aside. Now hold the candle. Etch: “______ (name of person) is healed on the candle. Rub some tea tree oil or the oil of your choice, onto the candle, and place it in a candle holder. Hold the candle as you did the water, in both hands, and feel your energy charging the candle until you KNOW the candle holds the healing power. Set the candle aside.

Now sprinkle some of the water you charged counter-clockwise for banishing, around the candle in the holder. Light the candle. Now hold the picture or name of the person to be healed, and in your mind's eye delve into the body of the person. Visualize your energy seeping into their afflicted area. (If you imagine the area is for example too hot ... use your imagination to cool this area down, or if you feel it is angry ‌ calm it). Take the oil and draw a pentagram over the afflicted area (on your own body) with your fingers and chant: I call forth the light To heal this blight With strength and might. Continue to chant this until you KNOW the energy and healing has happened. Now burn the picture/or what you have written, in the candle. Take some lavender and burn it now and allow the smoke from the lavender to waft through your altar space. Now see the person to be healed surrounded by an aura of healing color. Use whatever color healing represents for you. See the person feeling healthy and at peace. When you feel that all of your healing power is transferred to the person, chant: Encircled by the healing waters of the Goddess, Bound together by cord of blood, Strength is restored And Health Renewed! Continue chanting this until you feel the time is right and then release your healing energy into universe to the person to be healed. Drink the water ‌ feel it refresh and renew you. Let the candle burn down. You will bury the candle, and ashes from the photo (or what you had written) under the next dark moon (for banishing). Chant: Strength is restored and health is renewed... It is done, it is done, it is done, done, done! Blessed Be! Release the quarters. Close the Circle.

Dianic Wiccan Clergy Priestess Overview It is the goal of the Women’s Spirituality Forum to provide our members with herstorical and philosophical foundations of the Dianic Tradition; including ritual and spiritual practices from which to provide Clergy Priestess services to the public. Dianic Tradition is an ancient Goddess and woman-centered, Earth-based, feminist denomination of Wiccan religion. We are a teaching tradition. In the Dianic Tradition, clergy are required to complete course work that enriches their understanding of the sacred feminine Craft through cognitive and practical hands-on experiences to use in their roles as clergy priestesses to the Goddess and Her women.

What is Dianic Clergy? Clergy is a Greek word meaning “heritage” and from its origins, developed into a name for the persons who kept records and practices of the heritage. In the Dianic Tradition, we refer to the Clergy Priestesses as the active keepers and practitioners of our traditions, records and practices. These are Goddess priestess women who provide spiritual support to women (and their families) worldwide; and support women’s rights as feminists.

Ordained Dianic Clergy is not the same as an Ordained Daughter of Z Budapest. Ordained Daughter is an honorary title for exemplary community service gifted by Z Budapest directly. It has no legal ties to the Women’s Spirituality Forum.

What can I do with this? Ordained Dianic Clergy can perform public rituals, including marriage rites, under the legal auspicious of the Women’s Spirituality Forum non-profit status. The Women’s Spirituality Forum, Inc. is a 501 ( c ) (3) tax-exempt religious, educational, and charitable organization. Income you earn as Dianic Clergy and keep is not tax deductible. Income you donate to the Women’s Spirituality Forum, Inc. is tax deductible. The same is true for portions of the income donated to the Women’s Spirituality Forum, Inc., but only the amount of the donated portion would be tax deductible.

What is expected from students enrolled in this program? The Women’s Spirituality Movement, which reclaimed the Dianic Tradition, was based on two principles of action; movement happens through the written word and through the physical doing. We will require both from you. Expect to produce high quality materials that you will use in your Clergy Priestess practice. We expect you complete your training in a reasonable amount of time. You may not complete this training in any less than a year and a day, and not more than three years and three days. We have made concessions for life’s complications during your period of training by allowing you longer than a year and a day to finish, but also realize that this is a very serious and intensive program for only the most dedicated of Goddess Women. Live In-person trainings are required. Online classes in the Dianic Wicca University are required. More on requirements and fees. Ordination as a Dianic Clergy Priestess is required before you will receive any acknowledgement of successful completion. This ordination must be inperson at an event of our choosing. You will be required to complete an academic body of work using a variety of mediums (written, video, audio, etc.). You will attend in-person events where you will be required to perform leadership skills and be observed. If you meet all these requirements satisfactorily, you will receive ordination as a Clergy Priestess and an official certificate. Who should apply? Women-born-women who live their lives as females, and are seeking to enrich their lives and the lives of others by becoming knowledgeable about and intending to become practicing clergy of the Dianic (Feminist) tradition of Wicca, an Earthbased theology, as founded by Zsuzsanna Budapest.

Statement of Dianic Wiccan Faith As a Goddess and woman-centered, Earth-based, feminist clergy, you must support, defend and be prepared to propagate the basic principles of Dianic Wicca as follows: 1. Maintain a living practice the Manifesto of the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number One. 2. Practice the Dianic Wiccan Rede code of ethics that honors the Earth and Her creatures, "And it harm none, do what thou wilt." 3. Honor a feminine aspect of deity.

Ethics of the Dianic Wiccan Faith 

Manifesto of the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number One (Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries p.1-2)

Dangers of Magic (Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries p.10)

Only the Women’s Spirituality Forum can ordain clergy under the auspices of their non-profit status. While other non-profits might have their own clergy, their credentials are not substitutions for the training and credential of the Women’s Spirituality Forum.
