FROM THE EDITOR • One trend I wish would slow down. By: Art Singer, EIC (ZCCM), Albuquerque Z Car Club Sad to say, but the Z community has lost another great Z enthusiast. Bill Moreau passed away September 19 from complications with an ongoing illness. I was lucky to have met Bill quite a few times over the years at Z events all over the country. He

Bill (right) with Big Al on Beale Street

was a member of the Z Car Club of New England as well as the Connecticut Z Car Club. My lasting Bill’s Z in Memphis memory of Bill for me will be the time we were at the 2015 ZCCA Convention, hanging out, drinking beers and laughing our asses off with some of the other guys from New England and Kentucky. It never gets any easier to see good people go before

their time and every ZCON going forward I will drink a beer for Bill. He will be missed. There have still been quite a few readers wanting to send in articles on their Zs. The problem (if you want to call it that) is, they are mostly coming from the S30 crowd. I would love to see some later model Z owners (280ZX, 300ZX, 350Z and 370Z) get involved and start submitting some articles on their cars. As much as I love the S30, I would like to see more variety, including the newer models in the pages of ZCCM. A few good pictures and a good story behind the car is all it takes to make it happen. Even the 510 and Roadster owners are welcome to submit an article. ZCCM is still in search of Z-cars for the "Behind the Wheel" section of the magazine. If you own a nice Z and would like to see your car gracing the pages of the magazine and don't mind writing about it then send me an email at arts.zccm@gmail.com to get the ball rolling. Who knows, it might turn into a feature (see above) if there is a really good story behind it! Most BTW's only need between 400 to 700 words and about 5 to 8 hi-res images. This is your chance to see your car in print and it also looks nice displayed in the rear hatch area of your Z at your local car show. So get out from behind the wheel and show the world what you got.

The making of the “Tribute” 2017 Datsun Christmas Card For those of you who are interested in the process, the artist, Hector Cademartori took some photos to show you how the artwork progresses in his latest Christmas cards for 2017. The first thing he does is two or three rough sketches in black and white and ends up with one rough sketch which he finishes with a black marker and some color. In this case he colored the red and green areas to see if they'd work. Then, he transfers the rough to illustration board and reinforces the lines with a fine pencil. He starts painting, the car first, and the sequence images from this point are self-explanatory. This year he wanted to do a racing theme. The title "Tribute" pays homage to Peter Brock's BRE Datsun 240Z. As you can see, he adapted some elements to the Christmas theme with the number 25 and the color scheme of Santa Claus Racing. There are many Datsun/Nissan elements all over the place for those who look closely. From the Nissan GTP poster on the back wall to the little 1958 1000 cc "Rally around Australia" Datsun toy car on the table. The Christmas cards are definitively enjoyable

him and he trusts that those who buy them will spread the joy when they send them out to family, friends and fellow Datsun enthusiasts! There are two Christmas cards to choose from, the 2016 version titled “Coffee Break” and the 2017 version. The cards are 7x5, printed on heavy glossy stock and come in sets of 10 with

STORY AND PHOTOS BY ART SINGER 10

Z CAR CLUB MAGAZINE

Taking my project 350Z out on the road for the first time landed me in Long Beach, CA for the 13th Annual Japanese Classic Car Show (JCCS). This was my third time visiting the show in person and as they say “the third times the charm”. I like to get out to California as often as possible. It gives me a chance to visit with my sister, see old friends and go to car shows that are must see’s for any car enthusiast. You couldn’t have asked for better weather and the cars in attendance this year were amazing to look at. One reason I enjoy this show is that there are a lot of Z’s, 510’s and Skylines on display. On the outside they look pretty much stock, but it’s what’s under the hood that propels them to the 21st Century. Since I’m not a car show guy (I don’t have the patients to clean and detail a car for show), I do admire anyone that is. The time and money spent keeping them in showroom condition is beyond my comprehension. All cars here are 32 years and older (except for a few corporate displays) and to see the number of young spectators walking around is a testament to how these cars have withstood the test of time and still have a following, both young and old. All of the major import car makers were in attendance including Nissan, which again helped debut another Matchbox, the 1970 Datsun 510 Rally car. They had givaways every hour, drawing numbers from tickets handed out during the day. I was lucky enough to have the last numbers called in the last drawing of the day to win one of the JCCS stickered 510’s. On display with Nissan was one car that caught my eye. The vintage 1970 Datsun 240Z F/GT Bonneville land speed car. In 1976, six Nissan employees set out to break the land speed record in the stock body F/GT class. They acomplished their goal with a new record speed of 166.037mph (which stood until broken in 1985 and again in 2010 by another 240Z at 172.974mph). It was also neat to look at Chris Forsberg’s 350Z drift car upclose. Another car that stood out was Daniel Acosta’s 4th generation 1971 Toyota Corona with only 80,000 original miles. You don’t see

many of these cars on the road anymore. I think most of them rusted away. Mazda had a couple of cars that kept me at there display for a while. The first was the 1986 Racing Beat Mazda RX-7. With a 13B engine pushing

of

238.4mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats was crazy fast for its time. Racing Beat is a Mazda performance shop in Anaheim, CA, founded by Takayuki Oku and Jim Mederer (Jim built the RX-7). Also on display was the 1989 Mazda 767B. One of only three produced and was raced for only one year. But what a year it was. With six wins in GTP class at Dijon, Le Mans, Brands Hatch, the NĂźrburgring, Spa and Mexico. Honda had a couple of modern day cars on display, the 2017 Civic Type R Touring with its 306hp 2.0 liter turbocharged and intercooled VTEC engineand the Honda Red Bull Global Rallycross Civic with 600hp and 630 ft-lb of

torque (0-60 in 1.9 seconds). Nothing about these two were old school, but they sure garnered a lot of attention. And last but not least I had to mention Myron Vernis’ 1975 Isuzu 117 Coupe. It’s rear to see an Isuzu that isn’t a 4x4. That’s what makes this show so good. You will be gauranteed to see something you’ve never seen or haven’t seen in a long time. I was hearing rumors that JCCS will be moving to a new location. Looks like they’ve outgrown the current site. I’m sure their search for a new site will be a difficult one considering how great the current location is. They’ll be hard pressed to find a backdrop as good as Long Breach. But the parking situation should be better for spectators since parking around the Queen Mary is very limited. And the car show could be a lot bigger if they find a larger space for the show itself. I think it will be a win, win for everyone.
