5 WAYS TO BLESS THE JEWISH PEOPLE

A JEWISH HOLIDAY OVERVIEW

They usher in both solemnity and joy as we learn to keep and appreciate God’s appointed times.

J

ewish people around the world will enter into a period of time this fall called the High Holy Days. These are three Jewish feasts filled with soberness, repentance, fasting, celebration, and feasting. Although non-Jews are not biblically bound to celebrate these holidays, there is much richness to glean in studying them, understanding what they foreshadow, and seeing Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel and the nations, in their fulfillment. As we approach this season, may we join our elder brother in support and wonder as the days turn in cycle. They usher in both solemnity and joy as we learn to keep and appreciate God’s appointed times. This issue of Zealous is chockedfull of good things! We have an academic article from Dr. Raymond Gannon, MJBI Vice President for Academic Affairs, entitled “Yeshua, the Eternal Memra.” Next you will find a feature from Alisa Stephenson, Director of Events and Partner Relations, about Phil “Duck Commander” Robertson and son Alan.

FALL 2014

They will be the guest speakers for our 13th annual banquet to be held on November 1st at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Because we have had requests for tips on reaching Jewish people, Bonnie Saul Wilks, MJBI Senior Writer, has a great how-to article entitled, “Five Ways to Bless the Jewish People.” You will love this editorial, so down-to-earth and practical. In addition, Giuseppe Rispoli, Media & E-Learning Director, reports on his recent trip to Ukraine. The MJBI’s School of Messianic Theology is expanding into other nations, and we are thrilled! Lastly, you will find a convenient one page Jewish Feasts pull-out by Managing Editor Tara Kieschnick that can be kept as a helpful resource throughout the year. It’s a great way to follow along as we pass through the cycles of remembrance and observance together with God’s ancient people. Chag Semeach and Shanah Tova from the MJBI team around the world!

WAYS to BLESS

the JEWISH PEOPLE

will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (Genesis 12:3) Sadly, the fragmented branches of Christianity have taken the Church so far from its root that some believers are shaken to the core to discover the Jewishness of Jesus. He was raised as a Jew, keeping the laws of Torah, remembering the feasts, and honoring the patriarchs who burned with faith and love for the God of Israel. Christianity is deeply rooted in the Jewish faith. Israelites of profound faith penned the scripture by the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The Ten Commandments are the rule of law for Western civilization, and we unwittingly strive to obey it without considering its source. Jesus was raised as a Jew, keeping the laws of Torah, remembering the feasts, and honoring the patriarchs who went before Him. Sadly, the fragmented branches of Christianity have taken us so far from the root that some believers are shaken to the core to discover the Jewishness of Jesus.

FALL 2014

God’s ancient people have an important historical and prophetic role in God’s plan for mankind. The seed of Abraham have been called to bless all the families of the earth! They shine in worldly achievement, contributing to modern medicine, science, literature, and technology. Their economy is noteworthy with 68 businesses listed with NASDAQ! They comprise only one percent of the population of the world, yet they are world changers! The New Covenant sets the standard: The Good News is to the Jew first (Roman 1:16). Why? Because of God’s divine order. It has nothing to do with the measurement of His love for all. But the calling of the Jew is to be a light to the nations. Their long-awaited Messiah is Jesus, Yeshua in Hebrew, meaning salvation. They must know first, so they can take their place in God’s order. Here are five practical steps to becoming a blessing to God’s chosen people taken from the acrostic, PEACE.

When not catching a plane, train, or automobile for the far flung regions of the world, Bonnie is at home in Euless, Texas. She enjoys cooking, reading and writing poetry, and photographing nature and wildlife.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem

(Exodus 22:21)

There is tension in the Holy City with three major religions fighting for the space and ownership of the land. Ishmael and Isaac are at war, and the battle rages on generation after generation. The prayers of the saints, and the power of God have stayed back an untimely blood bath. There are many true believers and seekers within her walls. The Holy City is where God has chosen to display His love and fire. World attention focuses upon this tiny place, and the people within her gates need a revelation of their longawaited Messiah, Yeshua.

Encourage friendships with Jewish people

(Exodus 22:21)

Most church-going Christians do not know Jewish people. Here are a couple of ways to meet them. Attend classes at your local Jewish Community Center. They have many interesting courses available to the public. The JCC is very receptive to visitors. Friendships built there bridge the huge gap between Jew and Gentile. Let genuine friendship be your goal, not making a convert or winning a soul. Don’t be afraid to share honestly who you are: “I am a Gentile Christian, and I love the Jewish people. Here’s why…” Another way to encourage friendship is to start a conversation with the kiosk owners selling wares in the malls. Many of these are Israeli Jews living in the USA, selling Israeli products. Buy something and plant the tiny seeds of friendship.

Ask them in

(Exodus 22:21)

Invite your new-found friends into your home. It is a blessing to receive an invitation to visit someone’s home. Serve a meal and treat them as a royal guest. Asking them to join your family shows you are willing to go beyond the casual “let’s have coffee” stage. It’s an offer of opening your heart. In Jewish thought, hospitality is rooted in the idea that God Himself cares for the “sojourner.” The Lord instructed the Israelite not to oppress the foreigners living in the land, not to harm them in any way, rather reach out and bless.

Contribute to Jewish causes

(Exodus 22:21)

Paul said that we should be concerned with those in the household of faith first. “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:10). Give through your local church to Messianic Jewish believers first, then contribute to other causes. If your church does not give to Jewish ministries, then schedule a meeting with your pastor to explain your heart on the matter.

Educate

(Exodus 22:21)

Educate yourself on Jewish history, Messianic Judaism, the feasts and holidays, and the Holocaust. There are many wonderful books available: “The Irrevocable Calling” by Dr. Dan Juster; “They Thought for Themselves” by Sid Roth; “God’s Appointed Times” by Barney Kasdan; and “The Jewishness of the Gospel” by David Stern. Try having a Sabbath meal in your home and invite your new Jewish friends. They will come and love it. Ask your new Jewish friends about the Holocaust. Many have a story to tell. You will be changed by their tales, and your heart will expand toward their plight. Educate your church on current Jewish issues. For instance, anti-Semitism is escalating around the world. The rising statics are alarming. Will your church stand with Israel if the going gets tough? Spread the news wide and far that the church must love Israel in these last days. Bless and you will save many alive!

MJBI WELCOMES

PHIL & ALAN ROBERTSON

H

APPY, HAPPY, HAPPY” is the way Phil Robertson describes his life. It’s a rare person who gets to do so, but he is living the American dream. Phil, a.k.a. the “Duck Commander,” (a title given him by a hunting buddy that later became the name of his thriving duck call business) has proven it IS possible with persistence, hard work, and a bonafide call…or two. With expertise and creativity in product sales marketing, Phil has made millions as the “Duck Commander.” Eventually the company’s success led to the A&E reality TV series Duck Dynasty. Phil reluctantly agreed to do the show, feeling with 100% certainty it would fail. But instead it has made his family a household name, gaining them popularity beyond their wildest imaginations.

6

FALL 2014

Phil’s straight forward and simplistic manner of speech has made him a popular speaker to a wide range of audiences. As an author, he has sold well over 1/2 million copies of his book HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY since its release in May. Phil, the maker of duck calls, also has a spiritual call which he carries out by speaking the truth of the Good News every chance he gets. Raised on a humble farm in northern Louisiana, Phil’s family had little more than what they could provide for themselves off the land. What the Robertsons did have was plenty of love, respect for each other, and a devotion to family. Phil became a proficient hunter and fisherman at a very early age. He was competitive in school sports which led him to Louisiana Tech as starting quarterback ahead of a guy named Terry Bradshaw. Eventually Phil walked away from that

position, making Terry the starter—and the rest is NFL history. Even still, he was offered a chance to play pro football for the Washington Redskins, but his heart was just not in it so he turned them down. Phil began to immerse himself in the ‘60s drug culture, doing what he calls “rompin’, stompin’ and rippin’.” This took him down a path of destruction far away from God. Though he did complete his master’s degree and went on to teach school and coach sports, he was still living a reckless life causing hardship for his wife and children. One thing he did not stray from was his passion for duck hunting. Phil would soon answer God’s call and then invent a duck call–-both events changed his life. He then began an incredible journey to who and where he is today. If the Robertsons are somewhat eccentric, decked in camouflage and long beards, they are also intriguing. People watch their TV show by the millions. They appeal to teenagers, young adults and older-adult audiences all the same. The simplistic family values by which they live are attractive to Christian and non-Christian viewers. According to Miss Kay (Phil’s wife of 50 years), Duck Dynasty is a mission and ministry. “Kingdom first” was always their motto and motive for Duck Commander. Phil says that when he started his Christian walk, he was determined to become a Bible scholar. He wanted to understand the true meaning of

every verse so that one day he would be able to share it with folks who found themselves in the same predicament he had been. Phil may be the only man around quoting Scripture, carrying his Bible, and blowing duck calls to crowds. But he will gladly use any opportunity to demonstrate the call he makes and The Call he lives—because it makes him “HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY.” His son Alan (Al) did become a Bible scholar and was the senior pastor of Whites Ferry Road Church for many years. He joined the cast of Duck Dynasty this season, and now handles the bookings for the Robertson family, travelling exclusively with his dad. MJBI looks forward to welcoming Phil and Alan Robertson (and maybe a few other Robertson family members). We are blessed that God has allowed us to expand our mission and message in creative ways through unique individuals—and the Robertsons are no exception. They will attract a vast audience who will hear the vision of MJBI… and WE are “HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY” to have them! Z

Y E S H U A THE ETERNAL MEMRA Raymond L. Gannon, Ph.D.

I

Vice President for Academic Affairs

t has always been easily recognized by Spiritquickened believers that Yeshua is the Eternal Word of God, Ever-Present with the Father, and that He is the Agency for divine actions past, present, and future. But this truth, after many centuries, is now being rediscovered in Jewish academic circles as well. Christian students of Scripture have long acknowledged “theophanies” in the Hebrew Bible, occasions upon which the supernatural Eternal Master of the Universe would manifest or appear in the natural realm for a divinely assessed purpose. Recall “Then ADONAI appeared to him by Mamre’s large trees” (Gen 18:1; all passages taken from the “Tree of Life Bible” -TLV). Or remember the LORD’s (ADONAI’S) appearance to Gideon as the Eternal “sat under the pistachio tree” while the youth engaged in “threshing wheat in the winepress” (Judges 6:11,14). The LORD has come other times as the “Captain of the LORD’s Hosts” or “Commander of ADONAI’S Army” in Joshua 5:13-15. We witness the Divine Messenger of the Covenant coming to “His Temple” who is linked with ADONAI-TZVA’OT (Malachi 3:1). These and other events are only some of the occasions when the Eternal Spirit of God entered the natural or physical realm as the Memra or Logos (“The Word”) to relay divine objectives to those functioning within and subject to the created order. During the Second Temple period and prior to Yeshua’s own divine manifestation in biblical Israel,

8

FALL 2014

many classical Jewish convictions formed regarding the One called the Memra, a mediating and divine entity. The Messiah’s Name, (e.g., “Wonderful,” Judges 13:18) as the Jewish religious authorities decreed, was created before the foundation of the world. A Jewish recognition of “two powers in Heaven,” a kind of binitarianism, in contrast to trinitarianism, was common among the Jewish people for multiple centuries after Yeshua’s manifestation of God. The active pre-existent Creator of the world would miraculously come into Israel’s midst to judge, purify, and redeem Israel. According to Jewish conviction both before and subsequent to Yeshua’s sojourn on earth, the Memra is identified linguistically with the Logos or “Word” in other Jewish writings of the era, including the Gospel of John. The Logos represents a specific continuity between classical Second Temple Jewish religion and Messianic Jewish faith. The appearing Logos is considered a better Teacher than the written Torah as perfect truth is both declared and exhibited in the Logos. Jewish thought suggested that the Logos (Word, Light) was God-created to Himself, then became the creative Agent of all things and the declared Revelation of God. Philo, the great Jewish philosopher of Alexandria, oscillated whether the Logos was a separate

ACADEMIC C ORN ER

entity as God’s Son or whether the Logos was simply incorporated into the Godhead. With the diversified forms of Jewish religion that strongly characterized the Jewish world until early second millennium Crusades, freedom of thought enabled Jewish multitudes to retain Second Temple classical thought relative to the Logos. The controlling rabbinical metanarrative would not dominate Jewish thinking until the Middle Ages.

It is imperative that MJBI brings Yeshua back into the fore of Jewish thought.

So, in Jewish thought in the Second Temple era and for a thousand years beyond among traditionalists and free-thinkers, the Memra or Logos was broadly considered as “above the angels,” the Sustainer of nature, the Personification of the Torah, the means to God’s Self-Revelation, and a divine Person in His own right. The Memra HaShem amazingly corresponds to the Logos or Theos Logos (Word of God) as depicted as divinely active in John 1. In Torah (Moses’ writings), the Memra is creating, speaking to humans, revealing God, punishing the wicked, and saving and redeeming. Yeshua is seen in the Gospels and Epistles as in eternal relationship with the Father. He is the Logos, the Only Begotten, the Exact Image, the eternal, immutable, omnipotent One. Yeshua is the Creator and Preserver of the universe, the Agent of forgiveness of sin, and the Source of resurrection life. He is the Judge of Israel, the saints, all mankind, the spiritual forces, and the Executioner at the Great White Throne judgment. The events of the Fourth Century were highly impactful in terms of Gospel presentation to the Jewish world. To counter the influence of

MJBI.org

Roman Replacement Theology upon the Jewish masses, the rabbis did two critical things: First, they invented the myth and incorporated into the Jewish metanarrative the concept that the Oral Law (more widely known as the Mishnah) was divinely issued to Moses at Sinai along with the Written Law. Therefore, the Oral Law was to be as binding as the Written Law upon Jewish people. Although the Jewish masses were not entirely subservient to the rabbinic authorities for centuries to come, the Oral Law given at Sinai myth was circulated through the ages until most believed it. Secondly, and consistently, the rabbis in the Fourth Century attempted to systematically root out of the classical Jewish story or metanarrative anything that would lend support to Jewish faith in Yeshua. Thus, the Memra or Logos teachings that had been entirely common in the Second Temple period (including Yeshua’s own time and for centuries to come) were broadly repudiated by the rabbis, stripped from the Jewish metanarrative, and made to appear a Christian theological invention and, therefore, pagan in its origin. It is imperative that MJBI helps bring Yeshua back into the forefront of Jewish thought. He is no mere rabbi or religious philosopher, no limited prophet with overrated teaching skills. Yeshua is the Memra, the Logos, the Creator of the universe, the Judge of every human being. He is the Manifestation of God, the Exhibitor of the Father’s holy character, the sole means of reconciliation to God, and the divinely-appointed Anointed One of Israel to lead her into her God-decreed destiny. We must declare Yeshua as Lord of Israel and Lord of All. Of absolute certainty it is true: Yeshua is Israel’s Only Hope. Z

Ray Gannon has been a front-line pioneer in Messianic outreach and education for over 40 years. Ray and wife, Kassiani, have three children and twelve grandchildren, and he enjoys motorcycle riding, hiking, and pool exercising.

We must declare Yeshua as Lord of Israel and Lord of All.

fter 15 years of ministry and teaching in many countries of the world, the MJBI leadership had a vision to capture Messianic truths from world-renowned teachers and make them available to students globally. A format was needed that would overcome time barriers, classroom capacity limits, and teacher availability. In 2011 the MJBI officially launched the online School of Messianic Theology (SMT), and it is available at any time to anyone connected by any computer or mobile device to the Internet. The SMT program fits both those desiring to know more about the Scriptures and those who may be well-studied and looking to find a fresh perspective. The SMT program has been able to reach hundreds of people around the world who want to learn the Scriptures from a Messianic perspective. It is truly a blessing to partake in this journey. We are seeing so many lives impacted by the depth and inspiration that comes from the heart of our teachers and their many years of devoted Scripture study.

10

FALL 2014

It is also a blessing to announce that a Russian version of SMT is about to go online. With around 170 million Russian-speaking people in the world, SMT-Russian will give us the opportunity to reach many believers hungry for the gospel and in need of Messianic education and balanced scriptural teachings. David Sviontek and I traveled to Odessa, Ukraine, in January 2014 to finalize the logistical and technical details of starting the SMT-Russian project. Entering the country with all of our equipment was not easy, but by G-d’s will we were able to cross in with minimal problems and all of our equipment still intact. We are grateful for a formidable team and leadership in Ukraine that has relentlessly worked on this project. They are translating courses and books, recording voice-overs and editing video for an official SMT-Russian launch this fall. Through their efforts and determination, and your financial support, this vision is becoming reality. Z

Chag Sameach—Happy Holiday—from the Staff of MJBI!

hen the children of Israel were delivered out of Egyptian slavery, God instituted special holidays or “appointed times” throughout the agricultural year to celebrate, remember, repent, and give thanks. Today’s Jewish calendar is based on these feasts and set on a lunar cycle, unlike the longer, solar-based Gregorian (or civil) calendar. The “appointed feasts” mentioned in the Torah include Rosh HaShana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Pesach, and Shavuot, as well as the weekly Shabbat (Saturday) day of rest. Other minor feasts have been added such as Purim, Tisha B’Av, and Hanukkah. The State of Israel also has established new commemorative holidays. Further study and/or observance of these prophetic “forever statutes” can bring great dimension and abundant life to both Messianic and “grafted-in” believers. For future reference, detach this calendar page. More information and resources on the Feasts can be found on our website at www.MJBI.org or go directly to www.MJBI.org/Jewish-Calendar/ to download a printable version of this Jewish calendar.
