all is my favorite time of year! There is so much to enjoy this season. It is packed with good things, such as the Jewish High Holy Days, cooler weather, and the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute’s annual Fall Event. This year we are adding another important event, the “In His Steps” tour of the Holy Land! A joint effort between Gateway Church and the MJBI, the tour will be hosted by Pastor Olen and Syble Griffing and my wife Bonnie and I. The four of us are so looking forward to this special time in Israel where we will be following in the footsteps of Yeshua.

I believe you will be delighted with the fall issue of ZEALOUS magazine. It is packed with the goodness of the season, too. Dr. Rick Kingham has a newsy and encouraging update, along with great photos, from the annual Messianic leaders’ retreat held in Odessa, Ukraine. Political unrest has brought darkness and the threat of war, but there has been a safe haven and good news in the midst of the storm. The body of Messiah in Ukraine is growing in numbers and in strength. Dr. Ray Gannon has a compelling article in this issue on the prophetic meaning

behind Sukkot or the Feast of Tabernacles. You will glean both insight and encouragement from his perspective and words. We have again included a listing of the upcoming Jewish holidays/feasts (beginning with the New Year, Rosh Hashana) as well as added something new: a pamphlet insert with the yearly Torah Portion readings that begin on Simchat Torah (at the conclusion of Sukkot). Both of these study tools should serve as helpful reminders all through the Jewish year. Lastly, Alisa Stephenson, Director of Partner Relations and Events, has an article on the MJBI’s annual Fall Event, “RESOLUTE.” All event details are included, plus a profile on our speakers for this special evening. This year we are so honored to feature two great keynotes, Jay Sekulow and Lt. General Jerry Boykin (Ret.), who will be addressing the importance of Israel and its relationship to the world. They will also provide helpful insight about Islam’s war against both Christians and Jews that is raging globally. You will be inspired and encouraged in your faith. It will be such an honor to have you join us October 27 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas. Shana Tova—Happy New Year!

For Zion’s sake,

Fall is my favorite time of year!

Triumphant Praise Brings Harvest of Souls in Ukraine by Dr. Rick Kingham

T

here is a rushing wind of revival and awakening that has begun in the strategic nation of Ukraine. Recently, I traveled with my great friend and ministry partner, Pastor Olen Griffing, to train and mentor emerging leaders and encourage disciples of Yeshua in Odessa, Ukraine. Any casual attention given to cable news channels or the digital media will find numerous stories and articles about the stress under which the Ukrainian people are living these days. Having traveled there multiple times over the years, I couldn’t help but see the pressure etched on the faces of people on the streets of this normally tranquil and always beautiful city on the Black Sea. With political uncertainty all around them, and the threat of direct aggression from the East, people go about their lives wrapped in tension.

Thankfully, though, there is another spirit that is evident in this great nation. In the congregations from different parts of the country that gathered for several days in Odessa, there is a refreshing and hopeful renewal taking place. The annual retreat for leaders and disciples, who have boldly and courageously identified with Yeshua as their Messiah, encouraged us and lifted our anticipation of the harvest we have been praying for in the nation of Ukraine. In spite of the pressure and even persecution, there

was a release of triumphant praise that filled the hall in every session with joy, shouting, clapping, and dancing. Both Pastor Olen and I remarked several times about the intensity of the praise.

Psalm 89:15 came to my mind during one of the worship times. “Blessed, [happy, fortunate, to be envied] are the people who know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.” There are only a few places in Scripture where the word is used that is here translated joyful sound: after the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt, after the Passover when David returned the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, and also in the book of Zephaniah where it is used of God singing over us! All of these are great examples of that joyful sound! There’s just something about people who understand the true value and power of uninhibited praise and worship.

I believe that this release of triumphant praise ultimately guarantees a harvest of souls! The Apostle Paul said, “My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of man, but in the power of God.” I Corinthians 2:4-5 I’m learning that people in every nation are hungry for a demonstration of the Spirit’s powerful work. Our words

ZealousMag.org

“ I b e l ie v e th a t th i s re l ease o f tri ump h a n t praise u l tim a te l y g ua ra nte es a h a rve st o f so u ls!” will no longer persuade men’s hearts. The Messianic believers in Ukraine are witnesses to the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives and are demonstrating that power in their congregations. During the sessions in Odessa, there was a refreshing, prophetic wind released.

Our wonderful hosts for the conference were our great friends Valentin and Tatyana Sviontek. They have become like family to us, and the opportunity to stay in their home is a highlight of every trip to Odessa. We have also traveled to several other countries together to train leaders in the advance of the Gospel. God is using them in remarkable ways. Encircling them in the work in Odessa is a highly qualified team of associates, translators, technical staff, and servants with joyful hearts that took care of our every need and every detail to ensure a successful conference for each attendee. The worship teams from the different congregations were excellent, well prepared and truly anointed. This trip we also had the opportunity and pleasure to spend quality time with other Messianic leaders and each team member spoke in a different congregation on Images: Pastor Olen Griffing and some of the hungry hearts who received ministry at a recent conference in Ukraine

the weekend. Valentin has done an excellent job bringing together other leaders who are experiencing real unity in the region. Several Evangelical and Charismatic leaders are also in that group. Right now there seems to be a warm circle of friends and colleagues being developed there. I believe there is a great harvest of new believers and disciples that will soon be brought into the family of God by the Holy Spirit. The Scripture assures me of this in Psalm 126:6, “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” I’ve traveled to over 40 nations training leaders and encouraging congregations and churches. God has blessed me with great friends in the nations of the world. Remembering their exuberant praise has brought me great joy and satisfaction on many occasions. We are triumphant in Yeshua, and that is the kind of praise that is due Him! Overcoming pressure, persecution, and even tribulation, the Ukrainian believers are leading the way in this triumphant procession. Dr. Rick Kingham is the founder and International Director of The Center for Glocal Leadership. A sought after speaker, trainer, coach and mentor, his passion is to raise up leaders for Holy Spirit movements in the nations. Rick and his wife, Tracey, live in Bedford, Texas.

FALL 2015

E

ach year the MJBI fall event is considered a relevant barometer for critical issues within the Messianic community as well as in our nation and around the globe. In 2015 we find our world in what seems to be in a constant state of chaos. Lawlessness and violence are on the increase and fear is found in the hearts of people. We all pray for our nation and for the will of God to be done—but what are the practical solutions?

To start, it takes leaders who exemplify strength of character and who understand the issues of the day and the importance of fighting for faith and freedom. Standing resolute against the negative forces attacking and transforming the nation they love are Lt. General Jerry Boykin and Jay Sekulow, our honored guests for RESOLUTE, held this year on Tuesday, October 27 at the Gaylord Texan Hotel in Grapevine, Texas. Lt. General Jerry Boykin (Ret.) has been a front-line witness to the conflicts America has faced for over 30 years. He was a founding member of Delta Force and later became Commander of the United States Special Forces. He commanded all the Army’s Green Berets as well as the Special Warfare Center and School. His life reads like a blockbuster action-packed movie. Boykin leaned on his strong faith throughout his military career and it sustained him through many bloody battles. What Lt. General Boykin has seen in his fight for freedom has left him deeply concerned about America’s future. He has chosen to stand firm against the dangers confronting our freedoms and constitutional rights in America. Today, General Boykin is the Executive Vice President of the Washington-based Family Research Council, a position he took because he “wanted to restore the values that made America a great nation and preserve the future of his grandchildren.” He is a regular guest on Fox and Friends and Fox News. As a writer he has authored several books, one of the most popular being Never Surrender: A Solder’s Journey to

The Feast of Tabernacles:

The Fruit of Salvation History S

o highly regarded was Sukkot in the Hebrew Bible that the prophet Zechariah prophesied all nations would make their own annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem to worship the LORD at the Feast of Tabernacles. But to understand the significance of such a prophecy we need the larger context.

realities: (1) the temporary housing and abundant provision God supplied His people in the wilderness for 40 years, and (2) the harvest season when the agrarian nation would live in their fields to redeem time for the ingathering of crops.

As part of Israel’s religious calendar, “The Feast of Tabernacles” was given as the final of seven appointed feasts of the LORD as expounded in Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16. Its Hebrew name, Sukkot (soo-KOHT), plural of sukkah, means “huts,” “booths,” or “tabernacles.” It is also known as “The Festival,” “The Feast,” or “The Feast of Ingathering” (Chag ha-Osif). An eighth day, Simchat Torah or “Rejoicing of the Law,” was later added to honor and celebrate the annual cycle of public reading of the Torah.

The frequent waving of the citron (citrus) and lulav (palm branch) in all four directions of the earth with the recitation of Psalms 113-118 signified the universality of God’s dominance and eternal reigning authority over everyone and everything. A benediction (Hoshiana) calls for the Redeeming God’s salvation to save the people He seeks.

God had made it clear to each of the Hebrew Patriarchs that He would create national Israel to be His instrument to “bless all the peoples of the earth” (Genesis 12). Moses rehearsed the same theme, just prior to receiving God’s Torah, that Israel would be “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,” e.g., God’s pilot mission agency to affect the reconciliation of all nations to their Creator (Exodus 1920).

In Israel’s fields and later homes, the poorly constructed sukkah would be the dwelling place of every Jewish family, especially invited guests (Ushpizin, even patriarchal figures), and other outsiders (friends, neighbors, and even non-Jews) who may come into “the tabernacle” designed to give all glory to God. Life was to be lived in the midst of the Tabernacle as much as possible during these days. Fully furnished, one would eat, drink, study, entertain, amuse, and sleep in the sukkah.

Sukkot commemorates gratitude for two historical

sing and dance in celebration of God’s revelation. Concluding Deuteronomy and beginning Genesis afresh in the reading frame conveys the never-ending duty of mankind to study God’s Word. On the Feast of Tabernacles, the message resounds that God “tabernacled” with us in the person of Yeshua: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

As the Temple was gloriously illuminated at Sukkot by four massive and brightly lit golden candlesticks, men of piety and good deeds danced with burning torches in their hands, singing songs and praises. Even as countless Levites played on harps, lyres, cymbals, trumpets and other instruments of music on the fifteen steps leading from the Court of the Israelites up to the Court of the Women, Yeshua stepped forward and cried out, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) The water-drawing ceremony at Sukkot (Nissuch HaMayim), during which God was called upon to provide rain to water the crops, was an occasion filled with joy, activity and drama. As the Levitical priest was accompanied by a host of exuberant worshippers and liturgical flutists, both water and wine were poured MJBI.org

together into a basin leading through pipes back to the Kidron Brook.

It was on the last day of Sukkot, during the water libation ceremony in this grand setting, that Messiah Yeshua stood in the midst of His Jewish people to reveal He was the fulfillment of their celebration and the answer to their prayers. On that last and greatest day of the Feast, He stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John 7:37-39 The prophet Zechariah wrote of a coming day when all the nations of the earth will be called upon to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. Israel will fulfill her promised destiny under the authority and direction of Yeshua and successfully proclaim the Gospel worldwide. A time of global redemption will come when the nations recognize God’s authority in Yeshua and become worshippers in a renewed Jerusalem as seen in Revelation 7:9-10 and 21:3-4. Ultimately the whole of mankind will become worshippers in God’s Tabernacle. None will dare to defy the Eternal One. And that will most definitely be the greatest season of our joy!

arents experience that inevitable moment of reality when they face the bittersweet fact that their child has outgrown his clothes. That oncesmall kid can no longer squeeze into his size-small shirt, and the tiny pair of Wranglers won’t stretch any wider. It’s time for new clothes! As a media team, we have worked diligently to see the School of Messianic Theology (SMT) progress from an idea to a sustained worldwide program. By the grace of God, it grew faster than we could have imagined.

The SMT is a rare and unique program that facilitates an audience of over 500 enrolled students spanning 37 countries around the globe. The technology and systems that we pioneered just three years ago had speedily become a hindrance to long-term growth and upkeep. The whole system from back-end servers to front-end user experience needed to be overhauled and streamlined. With that in mind, our team sought to plan for the next evolution of our online brand of learning with an eye toward a rapidly growing future. It was dubbed SMT 2.0. In the nearly daily meetings that followed, we analyzed every piece and component of the online experience and combined it with the feedback we’ve received from our students to build a better and simpler platform.

In particular, the main web page has been entirely recreated with very specific goals in mind to beautify and simplify the user experience and improve navigation of our courses. We believe prospective students will have a much easier time discovering

Along with an early fall 2015 launch of the SMT 2.0, we are pleased to announce that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has granted the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute a religious exemption to award certifications, diplomas, and degrees according to the varied levels of the MJBI’s academic programs and student educational opportunities.

Like the parent of a vibrant young life that is growing and maturing, we are excited about how the SMT is developing as we look forward to reaching more. Amidst these changes, we are still committed to the original vision of SMT: to provide a platform for Messianic leaders and the Church to explore the Bible through Jewish eyes.

More information and resources on the Feasts can be found on our website MJBI.org by selecting “Info/Jewish Holidays” or “Info/Resources.”

Further study and/or observance of these prophetic “forever statutes” can bring great dimension and abundant life to both Messianic and “graftedin” believers. For future reference, detach this calendar page.

The “appointed feasts” mentioned in the Torah include Rosh HaShana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Pesach, and Shavuot, as well as the weekly Shabbat (Saturday) day of rest. Other minor feasts have been added such as Purim, Tisha B’Av, and Hanukkah. The modern State of Israel has also established other national holidays since its formation in 1948.

hen the children of Israel were delivered out of Egyptian slavery, God instituted special holidays or “appointed times” throughout the agricultural year to celebrate, remember, repent, and give thanks. Today’s Jewish calendar is based on these feasts and set on a lunar cycle, unlike the longer, solar-based Gregorian (or civil) calendar.
