About Me “Life is Fleeting.” I always longed for my work to live on after me, appreciated for its cause. I seek new inventions, technology and design about architecture as part of my personal interest as well as a plausible way to solve design issues for the tasks at hand. I see my work as an extension of myself. I believe design can not just be a form of expression, it can also serve as one of many solutions to address everyday issues.

01 Symbiosis “Blurring the lines between the old and new” Service Office | Cultural Gallery | Cafeteria Second Year studio, 2017 Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Symbiosis is located at the edge of Singapore’s prime business district, Tiong Bahru. It holds a fading rich culture of coffee-shops and bird-singing as well as its unique architecture that is both the first and the last of Singapore’s small scale 3-storey residential units. This project is placed along a central axis imagined on an existing road, Seng Poh Lane. Two proposed programmes in Symbiosis aims to

improve the historical context of the site as well as revitalise Tiong Bahru as a business district, a long lost identity. It includes cultural gallery and service offices respectively. Both programmes aforementioned are connected by a cafeteria, convening occupants while providing views of the surrounding open space denoted by the encapsulating flats.

Symbiosis – Design Brief ▪ Purpose

Transition

Connecting the old and new culture through existing carpark by generating business & educational spaces, which are accommodated by food and leisure programmes

that cater to the community’s needs. Symbiosis aims to replenish life into barren spaces and also invigorating Tiong Bahru’s. Most existing fabrics are untouched as

Built form – Consolidated from juxtaposition

of existing fabric, a vertical connection.

▪ Programmes Main highlighted programmes include cultural galleries (old) which houses the

collection of images taken over time, framing the transition of Tiong Bahru The implementation of service office rooms (future) provides the basic needs of start-up companies. Both distinct programmes are connected by a cafeteria (new).

Relation – Linking function to Tiong Bahru’s transition

▪ Idea Symbiosis came about from the unifying clashing identities of Tiong Bahru – is it well past its time? the old 3 storey flats, holding architectural value of the old HDB flats juxtaposing to the new sky soaring conventional 15 storey flats. A visual vertical connection was derived from the stark contrast of the two different typology of residential units. Variation of stacking was adopted as part of the design mainframe in

Symbiosis, creating a connection of chronological transition in Tiong Bahru to the programming and form of the structure.

Response – Generate spaces through stacking of containers.

Form – Oriented by the existing road, providing views and natural light to indoor spaces.

02 Verdant “Topography as a drive to sustainability” Plant Exhibition | Natural Trail | Community Planting Second Year studio, 2016 “Four Ponds Area”, Pulau Ubin, Singapore Pulau Ubin is an island Northeast of Singapore’s mainland, is made from four smaller islands that formed a larger place in the events where lands were converted for agricultural purposes such as prawn bunds and fish farms. It is the home to Singapore’s native mangroves as well as granite which resulted in its name. In the 1800s, granite mining became common, which from there and then led to the blooming industry of granite quarrying. Land was destroyed for mining and farms, resulting in the downfall of local biodiversity. as years passed, the industries began to decline. In the 1970s, workers abandoned PU and head for the mainland. Thereafter, the island is now used for tourism & recreation purposes. Verdant takes place on the “Four Ponds” area, striving to achieve sustainability through education of local past culture – namely herbs & spices.

03 Eminence “An enriching recreational landmark Art Gallery | Monument | Public space First year studio, 2015 Tampines, Singapore Generating a landmark to Provide an exquisite leisure experience while imbuing connectivity and serenity of the site with respect to its existing fabric. The project is situated at Tampines Community Plaza, beside Tampines MRT and Tampines 1. Tampines community park used to be a walkthrough grove, which was later converted to an area for communal events & activities to cater to the residents. The site contain three main areas, a community plaza, open grass field as an extension of the plaza and a skate park build for the youths. However, it has problems with its ambiguous usage of land. Eminence aims to enhance the current context of the site by serving as a continued development of the Tampines Community plaza by connecting surrounding private and public infrastructures in terms of spatial approaches.

Eminence - Design Brief ▪ Issue Notable flaws of Tampines Community plaza that renders the site inactive includes unsheltered event space as well as sitting areas and the lack of community-friendly facilities and are utilize on a occasional basis. The highlighted issues are derived as main concerns from interviews held with the residents. The site can be successful with a strong and tangible social context.

▪ Proposal Eminence aims to conquer the current issues by proposing a structure that shelters its introduced programmes spaces. This also includes paving new routes for easy accessibility throughout the site. The highlighted issues are derived as main concerns from interviews held with the residents. Tampines Community plaza, a public recreational space, is only successful with a strong, tangible social context. The building will be placed in the open field to reduce harm to the existing fabrics.

▪ Concept Developed from an idea of collection and connection, the galaxy icon is a prominent representation. It represents the improving connection between places and people, achieving its goal by having people hanging out in the proposed structure, hence “collection”. It is deployed to relief the contrasting nature the adjacent plots between residential flats and Tampines 1 (Commercial).

Collaborations ▪ Orbitr Orbitr Sustainable | Furniture | Multi-Used

Brief

The brief calls for sustainable chair(s) made of recyclable materials. Paper related products was chosen for this project. Orbitr is devised to fit 1 person and to be place in typical households. It is built for casual purposes, etc. to read a book, watch TV or light chat.

Design

Keeping user ergonomics in mind, Orbitr design is ensures stability and comfort. The seat is angled slightly upwards and the backrest tilted backwards to achieve a comfortable resting position. It allows user to lie back and relax. Based on its orientation, it can be turned from the back to become a table and also a shelf by turning it from the bottom.

Materials

Materials readily found in typical households or otherwise thrown away.

Cardboard - Main material selected due to its durability and tensile strength.

Cardboard Roll – Leftover/ Used rolls found in factory or workshops that consumes large amount of paper or other fabrics. Strong material that boasts sitting comfort due to its round shape and smooth surface.

Raffia Strings – Cheap and easily accessible material that is both durable and strong. Used to hold cardboard rolls together.

Kraft paper – Recycled paper, used as finishing to cover up holes from cardboard.

Glue – Used in little amount to attach finishing.

42

▪ BWF Project Orbitr Sustainable | Portable | Filtration

Brief

To come up with design solutions to help the villagers of Chambok, Cambodia. Chambok, known for its waterfall and natural hikes, is a rural village which is trying to improve on its tourism efforts.

Design

Design intention was to address the inaccessible basic amenities. Clean water was distributed by local government at water points in the central of the town. This renders the villagers living near the edge of the water point to be disadvantaged. Hence a shorter path was devised by the locals towards a nearby waterfall as their main water source. The design was to cleanse and reduce the dirt and bacteria content from the fresh waterfall water – rainwater. Hopefully reducing the amount bacteria contamination in harvested water. The filtration system collects residue based on particle sizes.

Materials

Sustainable materials available and accessible for villagers of Chambok.

Bamboo – Main material. Strong and waterproof characteristics to be used for containing the filtration system.

Stones – Used to trap larger detritus, wastes or litter in the water Charcoal – Cleanse and purify water with active carbon, also traps moderate sized wastes or litter.

Sand – Trap smaller particles
