Dear Players, Families, Friends, and Alum

With great pleasure, I would like to welcome each and every one of you as we gather for the 46th Annual Zebra Tournament It's a joy to see familiar faces and new arrivals alike, joining us for a weekend of competitive basketball games and social camaraderie. This tournament holds a special place in our hearts as it marks the final occasion we'll be hosting on Memorial Day weekend However, we hope you will join us once again when we move our tournament to a new date, Labor Day weekend….this year!

I want to express my deepest appreciation to our dedicated team of parents who have labored tirelessly behind the scenes to put together this weekend Special gratitude is owed to Lokelani Yee, whose unwavering commitment has been instrumental in orchestrating not one, but two tournaments this year! Thank you Lokelani, without you, we would be so lost! It truly takes a village of devoted people, contributing precious time to make this tournament successful. This labor of love is what truly sets us apart from AAU.

To all the visiting teams, THANK YOU as well! Your presence and competitive spirit this weekend always gives us a new level of excitement this holiday weekend. We truly appreciate your support and are grateful for the effort you've made to join us. We hope you have a memorable time!

To our donors, thank you for your remarkable generosity and unwavering support. Your contributions are the cornerstone of our operations, enabling us to function seamlessly and making a meaningful impact for our organization. We are profoundly grateful for your commitment, which empowers us to make all of this possible for all our families. We have truly been blessed these past years and please rest assured that we will use these gifts wisely!

To our graduating 12th-grade teams, congratulations! You made it all the way through!! Your dedication and perseverance have been remarkable. We hope you'll treasure the memories forged alongside your Zebra family. In this small, interconnected world of basketball, the bonds you've formed will endure for a lifetime. Look back fondly on all the fun trips, the post game meals, and the thrilling games that you all played during your time with the Zebras. As you reflect on your journey, remember to honor those who paved the way—your parents, coaches, and teammates. Wear your Zebra uniform with pride, for you've represented us admirably throughout your tenure here. Please continue to follow up with us periodically! You will always be family and welcomed here! Wishing you the best of luck this weekend and in all your future endeavors.

Following Saturday's games, I wish to extend a warm invitation to join us at our host hotel, the Santa Clara Marriott, for a relaxing evening of fellowship and celebration. Let's toast to the culmination of Memorial Day weekends past and the promise of exciting new beginnings this coming Labor Day weekend!

San Jose Zebra Youth Foundation 2024 Dedication

Bob Hayamizu

ebra Youth Foundation is dedicating the 46th San Jose Zebra tournament to Bob Hayamizu. This will be the final year that the San Jose Zebra tournament will be held on Memorial Day weekend as it will be moving to Labor Day weekend.

We want to recognize and celebrate Bob’s many years with the Zebra organization and his dedication to the sport and to the Zebra players and families that have come through the organization. He is sad to see that our tournament will no longer be the capstone to our Zebra players in their final senior month. But he will still provide the encouragement and mentorship with current and future Zebra members.

Bob’s passion for the sport is also passed down to his children Jeff (Ninja 1984), Ryan (Zebra 1988) and his daughter Denise (Zebraette 1989). From then he continued his involvement as a Zebra parent.

After Bob’s three children graduated from college, he became a Zebra coach. In 1994 he was asked to coach the graduating class of 1997. From there he continued coaching, mentoring and meeting new families and creating experiences with them. Today, Bob has coached seven teams all the way through their senior year and you can still find him in a gym coaching today’s generation

A little bit about Bob. Bob was a young man when he started as a Zebra basketball player. For years the San Jose Buddhist Church provided a social outlet and athletic opportunities for young Japanese-Americans. Then there was a need to adjust to the evolution of the community and continue to provide the same opportunities for younger generations to embrace their

San Jose Zebra Youth Foundation

2024 Dedication Bob Hayamizu

You’ll also find Bob advising coaches and members of the Zebra community As a Zebra Advisor he still provides his wisdom, knowledge and experience to other Zebra families. He enjoys meeting new kids and new families and he likes to share in their experiences.

For Zebra players, Bob is like another family member to them. His mentorship with Zebra players is engrained into their childhood memory. His interaction & involvement with Zebra players is a core memory that they take with them as they grow into adults and pass down the stories that they had with Bob.

Bob knows that the San Jose Zebras will continue after he is no longer involved. His wish is to have the past, present and future Zebra families continue to preserve the core values of sportsmanship, integrity and commitment while making sure to change for the better and enjoy the journey.

The San Jose Zebras would like to honor and appreciate Bob Hayamizu for his contributions and commitment to the sport and organization There isn’t one word to describe the legacy that he has contributed to San Jose Zebras. But to us Bob Hayamizu will always be described as dedicated…irreplaceable… memorable and respected.

San Jose Zebra Youth Foundation

The Zebra Legacy

The San Jose Zebra Youth Foundation is the oldest Asian American club basketball organization, dating back to 1930, when the San Jose Buddhist Church started sponsoring hoops teams as a social and athletic outlet for young Japanese-American adults The Zebras started playing in an era whe athletic and other opportunities were not as available to immigrants of As descent as they are today.

Beginning in the 1930s and continuing into the 1950s, the Zebras also fielded baseball teams, initially being known as the San Jose Asahi The baseball Zebras called San Jose Municipal Stadium their home for many years One of the most famed players of the pre-World War II era was Russell Hinaga, who traveled to Japan and pitched against Babe Ruth in an exhibition game. Several played semi-pro ball, and some made the rosters of college teams in various sports.

The first 1930 Zebra basketball team was coached by Everett Roseveare, who secured black-and white striped uniforms for the players, giving birth to the name, "Zebras ” Through the years, the Zebra teams would travel the length of the West Coast, from Seattle to Los Angeles. Its teams would play in the Mid-west, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Chicago. In the modern era, the San Jose Zebras/Zebraettes would cross the Pacific Ocean to the villages, towns, and cities of Japan.

By the early 1930's, the forerunner of the present day "Zebraettes" began playing basketball as the "Purplettes", using the purple and white colors of the Buddhist Church. Like their male counterparts, team members were, in many cases, out of high school, working and even young mothers. During the early postwar years, the Purplettes gave way to the immediate predecessors of the Zebraettes, the "Alphas" It was in the 1970s that the Zebraettes were officially formed and it was also then that the sponsorship of the organization changed hands from the church to the players and their families.

In those early decades, the players were mostly adults and most were already in the work force and played basketball in their spare time Starting in the late 1960s, the emphasis shifted to forming teams of high school age players In the modern era, beginning with the 1970's, the Zebras were led by Herman Santo and other old-timers like Chi ("Mr. Zebra") Akizuki, Clark Taketa, Dan Fukushima (the former President of the United States High School Basketball Coaches Association), Tom Ichishita, and many other former players. Hoping to pass on the legacy and tradition of early Zebras, they "re-founded" the organization to meet the needs of the times Their dedication and hard work made it possible for new generations of Asian-American youth to prepare for high school basketball, make lifelong friends and play high caliber competition

Herman Santo was instrumental in guiding the organization starting in the early 1970s, recruiting players and emphasizing good sportsmanship, hard work and family involvement – the foundation for the modern Zebra organization

Awarded to a high school senior

Through the 1980s, 1990s and into the new millennium, the Zebras continued to grow. More teams were added until there were teams at every grade level from 7th to 12th. Most recently the organization added 6th grade teams, and developmental teams in younger grades Summer camps were offered to help the players hone their skills and scholarships were established to help them pay for their college educations We also honor players at the season-ending picnic with awards for exemplifying the Zebra spirit.

A number of Zebras and Zebraettes have gone on to play and star on many of the prep basketball teams in the county Many have been named to various All-Star, All-City, and All-Tournament teams as prep stars and Zebra/Zebraette players Lee Anne Sera played for the two-time NCAA champion USC Trojans. Other Zebraettes who would go on to play basketball in college included Shelby Taketa (Cal Poly), Lisa Imahara (San Jose State), Lori Kozuki (U.C. Davis), Daniela Roark (Fordham/USC) Miranda Seto (UC San Diego), Paige Song (UC San Diego), Emily Dinger (Brown) and Ilene Tsao (Emory University), Avery Lee (Yale University), Jane Loo (Smith College), Maison Yee (Pomona-Pitzer), Makena Nitao (Chapman University), Sierra Pabo (Suny Canton University), Jade Ramirez (California State San Marcos), and Skylar Chui (Williams College).

On the boy's side, Rex Walters played in the NCAA Final Four for the University of Kansas Jayhaws In 1993, Rex would be the 16th player chosen in the NBA draft and went on to sign a multi-year contract with the New Jersey Nets and would later become head coach of the University of San Francisco. The Terry Maruyama-coached Zebra team on which Rex played would be named the best Japanese-American basketball team of all time in a Nichi-Bei Times salute to Nikkei athletes and sports.

Today's Zebras and Zebraettes are the recipients of a torch that has been passed from generation to generation in the hope that they will continue the Zebra legacy: the best in athletic performance, sportsmanship of the highest quality, pride in their ethnic background, and adherence to work ethic. In the beginning, the organization was founded to promote cultural, economic, and social values along with equitable ethnic competition Although there have been many changes over the decades, the Zebras continue to respect the ideals and purpose of its founders, and strive to build on their work

I am thankful for the connections I have created through this organization and the many opportunities it has brought me in the world of basketball Thank you Zebras for the past 5 years of my basketball career

To My Coaches:

Coach Darren, you have been such a big influence in my basketball career. You have pushed me every game and practice to be a better version of me I will never forget my first ever practice with you I went to set a screen on you, and my tiny 13 year-old self absolutely blasted you and caught you by surprise. You have improved my game so much and I am very thankful for that. Thank you for the hours you put into getting us to be even better basketball players. Thank you for opening up your gym for practices, Zebra tournaments, random shoot around time, and even offering us the pool for workouts And thank you for letting me use your recovery machines, it was much needed for my bad legs And to Coach Ruby, although you were not my Zebra coach, you are still a part of my Zebra family. Thank you for the endless support throughout my career and for always being a bestie. :)

Thank you for welcoming me into such a wonderful organization and providing me with eight years filled with unforgettable memories Zebras has undeniably changed my life for the better, teaching me that there is more to basketball than simply winning or losing. I have learned about the value of commitment and sportsmanship while growing in the sport I love. And I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a close-knit community that has created many lifelong relationships that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you Zebras for opening my eyes to such a different "world" of basketball, and I appreciate everyone who has played a part in this program

To My Coaches:

To Coach Darren, thank you so much for everything you've done for me and the team these past eight years. You have had such an immense influence on my basketball career, and I would not be the player I am today without your guidance and knowledge of the game I vividly remember this one practice (in the 6th grade) where we were practicing at San Jose High School, and you were teaching us how to take a charge. You made us line up along the free throw line and told us to fall backward. During this drill, I remember thinking, “How the heck do I pull this off without looking like a complete fool?” The image was truly hilarious. A bunch of middle school girls constantly falling to the floor. It was my turn, and I swear I tried to follow your example to the best of my ability, but I ultimately still looked like a fool, with my butt hurting at the end of it Sixth-grade me definitely thought this drill was painful and absurd, but fast forward a couple years later, and I find myself taking a charge in one of our games. Taking that charge wouldn’t have been possible without that specific drill we did that night in the dirty floored gym of San Jose High. Your coaching has greatly improved my game, and I am forever thankful for that. Thank you for putting your time and effort into this team. Thank you for all the games, practices, the millions of plays that I still can't seem to remember (I’m still trying, I swear), random shoot-arounds, and even the Zoom calls you set up during the COVID-19 era (I’m getting major flashbacks, wow). Thank you for your endless support and guidance. To Coach (Bestie) Ruby, even though you weren’t my Zebra coach, I am beyond grateful for you. You, too, have shaped me into a better player, and I am thankful for being able to play for you.

To My Teammates:

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin with this one. There is just so much I could write about for you guys You all mean so much to me and are the best teammates I could ever ask for I am so lucky to have met such amazing people that I could easily consider my second family To Becca, thank you for always making me laugh (even though sometimes I think you are absolutely crazy). You make me laugh nonetheless! Thank you for hosting all those sleepovers, team hangouts, and Christmas parties.

I will never forget the time you tried driving the team, but hey at least we got a good TikTok out of it ^ . ^ To Maggie, my post buddy. Playing post with you for the past eight years has been so fun. Whether it was on Zebras or our AAU teams, I always looked forward to playing with you Thank god you grew taller than me because now you do the jump instead of me LOL Thank you for also going to all those concerts with me! To Violet, thank you for being my official TikTok buddy. I will never forget the day you tried teaching me that one TikTok we filmed in the lobby of Silver Creek. To Emilie, my goggles buddy and fellow Carat (Joshua would be proud). I remember being so relieved to have someone else also wearing goggles like me when we joined Zebras Thank you for making me laugh, especially when you and Becca are paired together Playing with you has always been so fun! To Madison, our team carry and official 0.5 selfie taker! It’s been a joy playing with you, and I will cherish the time we went to our first Seventeen concert together (hope we can go to their next tour!) To Emma, your Snap stories are always so funny, and I love spilling private school drama with you. The debrief in Becca’s car that one night was such an experience. To Riley, the toughest on the team. Thank you for all the laughs, especially the jokes you make about Madi and Becca To Ayla, playing North-South was super fun, and I loved hanging out with you! Even though you just recently joined, I am so glad you did and hope to create more memories with you :) To Camryn, my favorite junior. I know you are in the grade below, but I just wanted to thank you for playing for us as a guest player, and I am so grateful for all the boba runs, SF trips, and the two years of basketball at Saint Francis. I love you all and am going to miss you guys so much We better stay in touch and visit each other in college!!

To My Family:

I know that I don’t say this enough, but thank you for your unconditional love and for pushing me to be the best I can be. You guys will forever be my biggest supporters, and I will never be able to thank you all enough. Without your guidance and care, I would not be the player and person I am today To Mom, thank you for introducing me to the sport that has become my life. Thank you for always being there for me and giving me advice on basketball (even if it seemed like I didn’t like it). Thank you for supporting me the most when I transferred to Saint Francis I still tear up just thinking about it, but I will never forget the day I found out about my sit-out period on the way to practice, and cried the entire car ride, but you made me feel better by letting me skip practice to go have brunch at Bloom. To Dad, thank you for always driving me to all my games and practices, no matter the distance. Thank you for recording all my basketball games on our mini iPad and for supporting me throughout my entire basketball journey. And to Jacob, thank you for coming to all my games and giving me tips after the games (even if I thought some were weird) I love you guys and I am going to miss you guys when I go off to college in a couple of months. <3

To the Zebra Organization:

I would like to express how incredibly grateful I am to have had the opportunity to play as a Zebraette for the last 8 years. I have met so many inspirational, hard-working, and talented people and have made many memories through this organization. I have made so many life-long friendships through this organization and will always be a proud Zebraette.

To My Parents:

Thank you for pushing me to go to my first practices when I was little. Despite my tears at the time I learned to truly love and appreciate the sport. Mom, thank you for always supporting me and believing in me. I strive to be as determined and strong as you. Thank you for driving me to all my away games even when they were far and early in the morning Thank you for pushing me to work hard and for believing that I can do anything I put my mind to. I know that I am sometimes a pain in your butt, but I appreciate you and love you so much. Dad, thank you for coaching me throughout the years in CYS and introducing me to the game of basketball I appreciate you always being there for me after all my school and Zebra games and listening to my frustrated rants after. You dedicated so much time into my basketball career and taught me to just have fun on the court. I am incredibly thankful for you and I love you. Thank you to both of you for all that you do and for making me the person I am today.

To My Sisters:

Sara, you are one of the best big sisters I could ask for Even through our ridiculous yelling matches you have always been there for me. I truly look up to you and you are my role model. Thank you for filling my childhood with so much laughter and love. I am so glad I had the opportunity to grow up with such a loving, intelligent, fun, and slightly weird sister. Kira, thank you for always coming to my games even if it is just because mom and dad forced you I have loved watching you grow up and hope that you continue to play basketball because of the amazing experience I had and because I know you will be great at it. I hope to have the chance to go to your basketball games in the future I love you both so much and am so grateful that you guys are my sisters.

To My Grandparents:

Thank you for coming to so many of my games even when they were out of town. Although I know Grandpa mostly came to my Reno games to go out with his friends it made me feel so loved and I appreciated it so much. Thank you for the hugs and the “Good jobs,” after all my games despite the win or loss. Thank you Grandpa for yelling for me to “Shoot the ball!” during my games even though I learned to tune it out after years of hearing it Thank you both of you for everything you do and I love you both so much.

To My Coaches:

To Coach Darren, thank you for dedicating so much time and energy into this team and for pushing me to grow as a player and a person. I have learned so many lessons for the game and for life from you. Since you coached me from Kindergarten to now I can say that you have made such an impact on my life and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have been coached by you

To My Teammates: Our team consists of one girl who reads books at our tournaments to finish homework and another who basically eats the diet of a five year old because she is so picky. We have a teammate who is late to every event we have ever had. Another who is always trying to get us to make tiktok dances with her while another absolutely refuses to dance. One girl accidentally cusses into the mic in front of the whole gym and the other scratches us all with her nails during practices One girl looks like a giant compared to some of us and completed our Zebra family when she joined. I love each and every one of you and cherish every memory we have made together. I have loved every team sleepover we’ve had and the naps in between games. I remember starting CYS recreational with some of you and being so scared to step out on the court, but you three made it so easy and when the offer came to continue my basketball career with you guys by my side it was an easy decision. I am so lucky to have found a family like you guys and I am going to miss all our scary drives in Becca’s car and the socials where we sat awkwardly by ourselves in a corner. However, I know that just because our time as a team has come to an end I have full faith that we will continue to stay connected and that the friendships we have formed are going to last a lifetime. I know that each of you will go on to do amazing things and I will be there to cheer you on always I couldn’t ask for a better team and love each of you like a sister Thank you for making the past 8 years of my life so amazing.

To the Organization:

Thank you for inviting me to be a part of Zebras. This organization has provided me with countless opportunities to grow not only as a basketball player but also as a person and a member of my community I am grateful that this organization took a chance on me when I was just a little 3rd grader running around the court and having a great time playing. I remember being shocked when I was asked to join the organization. At the time, I could have never imagined how lucky I was to become a part of this organization which is so much more than just a basketball team With the lessons I have learned and the relationships I have made over my 9 years in this organization, I will continue to build upon those lessons and carry them with me into the next chapter of my life. I am beyond grateful for the support and generosity that the organization has provided me in my basketball journey. I would not be the person I am today without my time as a Zebra

To My Coaches:

I have had the opportunity to be coached by many amazing coaches during my time as a Zebra, and each one of them has contributed to my growth as a basketball player. Thank you Coach Darren for the immense amount of support and guidance you have shown me throughout my basketball journey. I am so grateful to have been coached by you and I will expand upon the hard-working and persistent foundation which you have instilled in me throughout your years of coaching, in the next chapter of my life and beyond. From always being willing to open the gym when I wanted to get shots up to always scrimmaging with us in practice despite injuries, much of my success and growth as a basketball player is due to the time you have sacrificed to coach me. It’s still crazy to think that even after seeing my horrific basketball skills in elementary CYS you continued to coach me in Zebras and I am very grateful The competitive culture that you have created on our team is what makes this team so special. Thank you Coach Mark and Coach Kyle for always giving me advice when I'm not playing my best or when I am in my head too much. You have all pushed me and challenged me to be the best version of myself every time I am on the court and while at the time I didn't realize it, I am so grateful and appreciative that you saw the potential in me even if I didn't All of you have been amazing role models who I could always look up to and have shaped the person and player I have become

To My Teammates:

Thank you for being the best teammates I could have asked for. I would not be the player or person I am today without all of your constant support. From the many years we have been playing together, I now understand the impact that surrounding yourself with amazing people has on a person Not only have I never met more skilled and smart basketball players, but I’ve also never met a group of girls who are kinder, funnier, and more intelligent than all of you. I am so grateful to have been a part of this truly special team. I took for granted how in every game we played together, I knew you guys would always have my back and battle with me in close games. Whether it was a game where I couldn't make a shot or I got into foul trouble early, you guys always created opportunities for me and put me in the best position to succeed in games I might get annoyed when I always have to take the .5 picture (even when all of you have arms that could do it too), but despite that, I will always be grateful for all of you. Emma, thank you for understanding all the sarcastic jokes I make and laughing

To My Family:

I apologize for not expressing my gratitude enough, but thank you both for everything you have done for me. Thank you for recognizing my potential and always believing in me. Whether it was serving as the team manager or the organization treasurer, you always made time to support me and give me the opportunity to be a part of this organization Mom, I used to find it odd that you volunteered for every position or job that needed filling, whether it was for Girl Scouts, soccer, or Zebras. However, I now realize that your selflessness has allowed me to have the best experiences possible, make lifelong friends, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Dad, thank you for being my fulltime coach throughout my sports career From a young age, you pushed me to become the best athlete I could be Though I may have dreaded the countless days spent doing drills in our backyard at the time, they have undoubtedly made me the player I am today. I am also thankful that you were always known as the dad who filmed every game so that I would have enough footage for my highlights or to analyze my mistakes and improve my game. Though I may not say it often, I am forever grateful for everything you have both done for me. withmeevenifnooneelsedid.Becca, thankyouforbeingtheonepersonwhocouldalwayscheerme upandlaughwithme, nomatterthesituation.Ri,thankyouforalwaysbeingthepersonIcouldrely onforanything, frommakingallofyourshotstobeingtheonepersonwhowouldaccompanymeto shootaround Emilie, despitealwaysscaringmewithyourinjuries, thankyouforalwaysfindingaway toscoreandmakethecraziestshots.Maggie, thankyoufordefendingthepostwhenIdidn'twantto andalwaysbeingreadytoknockdownathreeorgoupforanalley-oop.Caitlin,thankyouforalways helpingmewhenIforgettheplaysinthepostforthehundredthtime.Vi,thankyouforalwaysbeing thevocalleaderonourteam, bothinpracticeandgames, makingupforthesilencefromtherestof us Ayla, thankyouforjoiningourcrazyteam;eventhoughweonlygottoplayforaseason,I'mso gladIwasabletoplaywithsuchatalentedandkindteammatelikeyou. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this amazing community Since I joined the organization in 5th grade, I’ve been surrounded by such loving and supportive people who welcomed me with open arms. Because of Zebras, I’ve built lifelong friendships with my teammates and found a love for the game I wouldn’t have been able to find anywhere else. Thank you to everyone who has put in their time and effort to help build the culture of this organization. It has been an unforgettable experience being a Zebra and I am forever grateful that I was part of the Zebra family.

To Coach Darren:

I’d like to thank Coach Darren for constantly pushing me to be a better basketball player and always believing in me. Because of your encouragement, I’ve been able to play with more confidence and feel slightly better about having to play center against six footers. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our team and all the time you invest in us We wouldn’t be as successful as we are without you, and I’m so grateful to have had a coach like you the past eight years.

To

My Teammates:

Thank you for all the unforgettable memories we’ve made both on and off the court. I’m so lucky to have played with such amazing people who have made basketball so enjoyable, and even luckier to get to know you guys all these years Even with all the black shirts we’ve won, this team means so much more to me than just basketball, and you all have turned into some of my closest friends. I’ll never forget our annual sleepovers and Christmas parties, watching Madi team carry, and all the time we spent together. I couldn’t ask for a better team, and I will forever cherish the memories we made I’ll miss you guys and I’m so excited to watch all of you continue to do amazing things in the future!

To My Family:

Thank you to my parents for the unconditional love and support you guys have given me throughout my basketball career and in everything I do. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of the sacrifices you both have made to help make me a better person. Even if I act like I don’t like hearing all the basketball advice on drives home, I know that it comes from a place of love and you both want me to be the best version of myself. Thank you for always believing in me and being there for me, whether that be driving me to extra practices or just cheering me on at every game. Thank you also to my brother, Justin, for getting me into basketball and giving me motivation to become a better player when you destroyed me in 1v1s. I am and always will be grateful for such a supportive family, and hope I will continue to make you guys proud both on and off the court!

To the Organization: Thank you for the amazing experience and opportunities you have given me over the past 6 years. I have made so many memories and friendships through this organization I will always be thankful to have been able to play the sport I love with people who support me and be a part of this family

To My Coaches: Thank you for always supporting us and pushing us to be the best. You have always sought out our highest potential which has led us to become the team we are today. Thank you for taking the time to coach and support us. I am extremely grateful for being able to play for you

To My Brothers: Thank you for always believing in me. No matter how much I deny it, you guys were the best role models I could’ve had. You always tried to make me a better player and pushed me when I said I couldn’t do it. Without you guys, I probably wouldn’t be playing basketball at all

To My Mom: I would like to thank my mom for always being there for me no matter what. You always knew what would calm me down after a bad game. Thank you for being my biggest fan and always showing up to my games even if you do clap for the other team. Thank you for working so hard to let me play and convincing Dad to let me go eat or get boba with the team! I couldn't have done it without you

To My Dad: Thank you Dad for always pushing me to be the best. You always believed in me no matter what and knew I could be better. Thank you for driving me everywhere even when I got my license Though sometimes I dreaded it, I would miss our talks about the game on the drive home It helped me realize my mistakes and grow as a player I will always appreciate everything you have done for me.

To My Teammates: Though almost every year I said I would quit, I never did because of you guys. At first, I hated Maggie for making me join and being the odd one out, but quickly this team became my second family There was never a dull moment with you guys both on and off the court From all of the black shirts we have accumulated to our sleepovers at Becca's house and soon our trip to Hawaii, I am so grateful for all of the memories we have made and have yet to come.

I am proud to represent Zebras and to call this program my home.

To My Coaches:

Thank you for welcoming me into your team and having faith in my abilities as a basketball player. Your encouraging demeanor inspires me to work hard on the basketball court. I look forward to playing my last season under your guidance and I appreciate you for the opportunities and for being a great coach.

To My Teammates:

Mom and Dad, you’ve supported me at all of my games since I started as a little child. You’ve supported me through my victories and even my toughest losses and I will forever be grateful. Thank you for your wisdom, guidance and the countless hours spent to allow me to play the sport I enjoy, for being my personal cheerleader, and for always believing in me even when I doubted myself. I would like to thank the Zebra Organization for giving me this opportunity to become a part of a team that is now my second family. All of the time and effort put into this team has allowed me to create so many memories and friendships that I will forever cherish The unconditional love and support held within the Zebra community has helped me grow into the person that I am today both on and off of the court

Although this chapter has come to a close, I will always hold onto the friendships, memories, and lessons that I have gained as I go off to college I am beyond grateful for everything that the Zebra Organization has done for my family and I and will always be honored to call myself a Zebra.

To My Coaches:

Coach Darren, Coach Mark and Coach Kyle, thank you for sticking with us since as early as I can remember and always believing in me, even during my CYS days when I could barely get the ball to touch the rim. I can only imagine the patience it took and the thought process going through your head when watching us run around the court aimlessly at the ripe age of seven. You never failed to push us to our limits and become the best versions of ourselves. Without you, we wouldn't have nearly as many black t-shirts sitting in our closets right now Coach Darren, your dedication, time, and effort that you put into this team shows during every practice and game It says a lot when parents from other teams compliment your coaching skills as well I have become the player I am today because of you and I am forever grateful for that Your knowledge of the game is admirable and the advice that you have given to me over the years will continue to stick with me even when I am off of the court It has been a fun journey having you as my basketball coach and I cannot ve put into making this team the best th

To My Teammates:

I think this is the most dynamic group of girls that I will ever encounter. From someone who stuffs her homework in a basketball bag so that she can study at games, to another who has attempted to drive her dad’s car without turning the engine on and almost killing an entire team of girls on the way to the grocery store, this team couldn’t be filled with individuals more perfect for each other Each and every one of you brings something different to the team both on and off of the court During practices, games, and tournaments I am so lucky to have you guys by my side. You all inspire me to become a better player and I am grateful to be a part of a team with such talented individuals. It's crazy to see how far you all have come and there aren't enough words to describe how proud I am of this team. Off of the court, the time that I spend with you guys is truly something that I will never forget. From our team dinners, boba runs, and sleepovers at Becca’s house, you guys never fail to make my time worthwhile. I am beyond lucky that I got the opportunity to play with such an incredible group of girls. I have so much love for you all and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for each and every one of you!

To My Family:

Thank you guys for supporting me throughout my entire journey both inside and outside of Zebras and sacrificing your time to watch me play. To my dad, thank you for always pushing me to do better both on and off the court. Your words of wisdom are very helpful with the exception of the things you yell out on the bleachers since I will admit, sometimes I tune you out…but in all seriousness, thank you for getting me into basketball and practicing or coaching me during your free time. You have been my biggest inspiration throughout my basketball career and one of the reasons why I started playing I don’t think I would have gotten this far nor be the player that I am today without you! To my mom, thank you for always cheering me on and believing in me I know that I can be a pain sometimes but I’m so grateful for all of the dedication and time that you have put into this organization I know I may not show my appreciation towards you as much as I should, but I am so grateful to have had you by my side throughout these years with the Zebraettes. You never fail to lighten the mood after a bad game or loss and your enthusiasm, patience, and spirit helped me persevere when I needed it the most. You will always be my number one supporter in my heart and I can’t thank you enough for that! To Syd, thank you for coming to as many of my games as you could. I know it's hard now since you’re in college, but I know that you’re cheering me on from Irvine. You’re welcome for sticking to basketball and being dad’s only and last hope of having a daughter who he can coach from the sidelines to make up for the son that he never had. To both of my grandmas, thank you for coming to my games and being so loving to me and my teammates I always look forward to seeing you in the stands and smile when you wave at me during the games I appreciate the overwhelming support from you both and hope I made all those trips to the gym worthwhile!

Thank you to the Zebra Organization for giving me the opportunity to improve my basketball skills and play with the best teammates I could ever ask for. Playing for Zebras has given me the chance to meet so many new people and make lifelong friendships along the way. It has allowed me to grow as a player and individual, and it has taught me the values of friendship and community. It has also allowed me to keep in touch with my culture and learn so much about myself and my heritage. Thank you for providing me with a pathway to years of hard work and memories that I will be able to cherish and continue in the future.

To My Coaches:

Thank you Coach Darren for your constant support and dedication to our team You go above and beyond to ensure that we have every resource available to us, allowing us to improve our game every day You not only check in with us to make sure that we are okay during zebra season, but during the offseason as well, and I will be forever grateful for this Ever since coaching me in CYS, you have been one of the most influential people in my basketball career, as you have taught me so many valuable skills and life lessons. You are a true mentor and inspiration for me to look up to, and I thank you for helping me become the player I am today.

Thank you Coach Mark and Coach Kyle for helping us out whenever you can, your support and advice have greatly helped our team improve over the years. You guys have also been there for me since CYS, and your constant dedication and hard work have allowed me to grow immensely. Thank you Coach Ruby for always being there for me in basketball and life. You have supported me ever since I first met you in Spartans and I couldn’t be more grateful to have you as my coach and bestie.

To My Teammates:

Thank you to my teammates for constantly making me laugh and for becoming some of my best friends for life. Even though you guys are my #1 haters, I still love you all so much. You guys have supported me throughout Zebras, high school sports, and just life in general and I’m forever grateful for this. I’ll miss our sleepovers that always consisted of karaoke and baking, car rides (despite what you say about my driving skills), and numerous team dinners (because we love food so much). I’ll miss when we burst out laughing on the court or bench when someone does something embarrassing, including embarrassing injuries. I’ll miss being able to play against all of you in high school and playing together during Zebras and Moxie. Emilie, I definitely won’t miss you scratching me with your long nails during practice, but I’ll miss all of our fights after games and practices! I really wish we had a fight during one of our school games, but hey it’s never too late. Maggie, you are the best 3-point center I know and it’s always so fun watching you play, even if you hurt your ankle in the process...You never

fail to make me laugh and I’ll miss all of our rants about high school basketball Caitlin, thanks for being the aesthetic person on the team and running our Instagram (even though you post the most horrid pictures of me) I’ll always remember the first time I ever met you you had colorful pipe cleaners all over your hair and from that moment I knew you were gonna be a perfect addition to the team Violet, you’re so funny and always know how to make the team laugh Thanks for always having my back on and off the court Madi, you have the most deadly side eye ever, and even though I’m on the receiving end of it most of the time it always makes me laugh You’re my Disney twin for life! Emma, I’m gonna miss constantly gossiping with you and always sending each other random things about people. Thanks for being there for me all the way from Girl Scouts to now. Riley, you’ve been there with me since Day 1. I still have vivid memories of us making plans to convince our parents to let us have sleepovers and make slime together. You’re genuinely so funny and I aspire to be your level of unserious. Ayla, even though you’ve only been with us for a year, it feels like so much longer because of all the memories we’ve made. You’re one of the kindest and sweetest people ever and I’m so glad that we’re teammates. I can’t wait to see everyone’s success in the future, and I look forward to hanging out in college together. I’ll miss you guys so much and thank you again for giving me some of the best memories of my life.

To My Family:

Thank you Mom and Dad for being so supportive of me since day 1. You have been there for me through thick and thin and I can’t thank you enough for your love and support. You guys have given me the best resources and opportunities to allow me to succeed in both school and basketball. I know I’m not the best at showing my appreciation, but I’m truly grateful for all of the work and dedication you put into my success. Dad, thank you for giving me such great advice throughout my basketball career, and thank you for recording all of my games, my teammates and I truly appreciate the videos. Mom, thank you for being my number 1 fan, I always hear your cheering from the sidelines and I’m incredibly grateful for your support and love. I appreciate all of your game-day texts and little motivational speeches before games, thank you for everything. Ryan, even though you’re not home right now, you still manage to constantly support me through sports and school which I’ll always be grateful for. I love you guys so much thanks for everything!!

To the Zebra Organization: First, I would like to thank the organization for allowing me to play basketball at a high level while also allowing me to form new friendships that will last a lifetime. Playing for the Zebra organization has taught me the important values of teamwork, respect, and accountability which are traits that I have now inherited and will value for the rest of my life. I have made so many memories as a Zebra and the best ones were every time we won a championship as it showed how great of a team we were.

To My Coaches: Thank you Bryce and Brett for coaching me and the rest of the team for our entire time as Zebras Being able to play for you guys as coaches was extremely fun and you guys coached us at a high level where we were able to compete against the best teams. Thank you for giving me personal advice and checking in on me while I was injured or sick, it meant a lot to know I have coaches who care about who I was on and off the court. Being able to play games like NBA2k and Fortnite with the team also gave us an even better connection with you guys. Practices were always fun except for the times we ended up running because Zach or Daniel forgot a play or when we could never make a free throw to end the practice One-on-one drills along with jungle ball were not fun at all for me because I was the smallest on the team. I still never will believe Daniel will ever memorize any of the 30 plays we ran throughout our time as Zebras. Hopefully one day I’ll get to watch you guys play hockey and get to reunite with you guys again someday after Zebras is officially over. Good luck to your guys’ futures and once again thank you!

To My Teammates: By far the best group of people I have ever met and being able to play with most of you since 2nd grade has made my life so much better. I enjoyed every aspect of our team, and there was never a time when I wasn’t happy around you guys. It is crazy to me how we went from talking about the newest seasons in Fortnite to then getting our licenses and now talking about what colleges we are planning on going to. Time has flown by so fast and I can’t believe it has already been 7 whole years. We did a lot of memorable things together, from the after-dinner practices at Smoking Pig to hanging out at the hotels in Reno on Saturday Night.

My favorite memory was at the Reno Hotel junior year where we spent the entire night fooling around, although it was not fun that you guys were messing with me at times. I’d first like to thank Wyatt, Noah, Trent, and Miles for being a part of our team. It sucks you guys couldn’t have stayed with us for the whole 7 years, but we all still made a lot of memories together and won championships together. Tyler for joining our team and adding a new style of play and energy that our team lacked. I have not known you for long, but you have been kind and adapting to our team, and thank you for being a great addition to our team. Adin, I also have not known you for long, but you instantly added a fun personality to our team and made us a lot better. Jarek, it has been fun playing basketball with you since 2nd grade, we made plenty of memories together and it was fun watching you guard the best players on every team. I always made sure to never get on your bad side and I’m glad I never did as I was able to get to know you more and more as the years went on. I always hated being guarded by you as I barely was able to even get a shot off and maybe even a dribble off. Daniel, you have made my time as a Zebra so much more enjoyable during the practices and games and times off the court It’s so funny how you always seemed like you just woke up before practice started and you always forgot every play in practice. You were still a bucket though and always made the most difficult shots. Zach, I’ve known you for pretty much my entire life, we went to school from pre-school to 8th and you have never failed to make me laugh. Thank you for being a great teammate and even better friend over these past years You still need to work on that jump shot but you always beat me up in practice. Ry, we’ve been through a lot of things together and I couldn’t have asked for a better friend and teammate with me ever since 2nd grade. Thank you for always being there for me and being the leader of our team. I always got your back carrying you in 2k and any other video game since you were never good at any.

To My Family: Thank you guys for helping me grow up to become the person I am today. Thank you Mom and Dad for establishing who I am as a person and making sure I have food and a place to sleep every day. I know how hard you guys work every day just to make sure my siblings and I can keep pursuing the things we enjoy and I just want to thank you for all the sacrifices you have made for us. Thank you to my siblings for being the best siblings ever. Learning from you two has taught me how to be a better person through being the older brother Thank you to all my family for supporting me by coming to my games, and buying me items that helped me grow and helped develop who I am today. Thank you Violet for being an amazing friend and helping me through important times of my life.

To the Zebra Organization: In 5th grade I was presented with the choice to either play with the Zebras or the Ninjas. Ultimately, I ended up going to the Zebras because I was already friends with some of the guys on the team. Since then, I’ve been blessed with so many memories and opportunities that I’ll never forget I want to thank the Zebra Organization for inviting me to be a part of their family for the past 7 years. The relationships I’ve created within are lifelong and I’m forever grateful for all the blessings that I received along the way.

To My Coaches: Itatani93 and Itatani88, or as everyone else knows them, Bryce and Brett. It’s been an honor being coached by you for the last 7 years. Not only were you guys coaches to us, but friends too. You guys have both been amazing mentors to me and the rest of the guys, and I’m extremely thankful for the lessons you’ve taught me It’s been a long time, but still, I only remember about 3 of the 45 plays we had to remember. Thank you for pushing me to be the best player I could be, and forcing me to be aggressive when I wasn’t. I’ve really enjoyed being coached by the two of you over the years. It made tournaments and practices so much more fun being able to play for coaches who I could bicker with and talk mess to during our time away from basketball too I remember how easy your job was from 6th to 8th grade, since we had a superteam. Must be tough with 6 guys that all do the same thing at the same height now… and Adin. I truly appreciate the memories we’ve made throughout the years and am grateful for the bond I’ve built with you both.

To My Teammates: My brothers, I’m forever grateful for the bond I’ve created with all of you The memories I’ve created with you boys are core memories that I’ll never forget For the past 7 years, I’ve looked forward to the start of every season just because it would mean I could spend more time with you all. But I know the bonds we’ve built are lifelong, and I’m excited to see each and every one of you go onto what’s next. Tyler, you joined us pretty late into our years, but the impact you made off the bat was unforgettable. Your defense and passion brought our team energy in so many situations, and it was always a blast playing

beside you. Adin, the big guy who doesn’t look Asian at all. It was a privilege to have you in the paint to bail us out on offense when we needed it. I’ll miss your energy and your humor during our tournaments. Jarek, my backcourt brother. It’s been a blessing having you as my two guard throughout the past 7 years. Thanks for always guarding the best player so I don’t have to. I’d hate to play against you, so I got lucky being able to play beside you. Daniel, Mr. Nonchalant Reviews. I remember when you came to Tri-City in third grade and farted and it smelled terrible And that continued all throughout our Zebra career too. In all seriousness, I’ve enjoyed being your teammate throughout these years, and I can always count on you for a good laugh. Zach, spin move enthusiast, it’s been one crazy ride throughout the past 10 years. I’ve been through ups and downs with you from Tri-City to CoopHoops to Zebras. Playing alongside you has been the most fun basketball I’ve played throughout my life, and I’m grateful for that Myles, my shooting guard in real life but point guard in 2k. I’ve had an uncountable number of memories with you and I’m forever thankful for that. You’ve been with me through ups and downs. You’re my brother for life, but still, I wonder about you sometimes. I think all the other guys agree too. But thank you for bringing joy to our team at all times with your jokes and weirdness. To Miles, Noah, Wyatt, and Trent, it sucks that you all couldn’t end these years with us, but for the moments we’ve had together, I’m so grateful. Thank you to all of you guys for all the memories and moments we’ve been through together, I love you all like brothers and appreciate all you’ve done for me.

To My Family: Mom and Dad, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You guys have been my rock forever and supported me through everything. You provided me with everything I needed to succeed and cheered me on at every single game I’ve played I hope one day I can repay all this support to you. Jace and Kylie, I appreciate you for teaching me how to be tough and to fight through things. You guys bullying me turned me into a stronger person, and that’s something I could never get anywhere else. You both had a major part in building who I’ve become today, and I’m thankful. Alyssa, thank you for being the most supportive girlfriend ever I introduced you to the Zebra family late, but you fit right in Thank you for coming to all my games and cheering me on. All of you have had a huge impact on me, and I’m so thankful for everything you’ve done for me. Your love and support has never let me down and I couldn’t be luckier with who I have on my side. I love you all.

To My Teammates:

Thank you to each of you for welcoming me into the organization and embracing me as part of the team, even after joining late. The memories we've created together during practices, like the relentless running drills after missed free throws, are ones I'll can laugh about (now) Traveling together and hanging out in hotel rooms brought us closer, as well as the camaraderie we shared during games and post-game meals. Thank you for always being there to lean on, offering not just friendship but genuine support both on and off the court. Playing basketball alongside you all has been a privilege, and I'm grateful to have lifelong friendships through our shared experiences.

To My Parents:

Your unwavering dedication has made all of this possible – from the countless hours of travel to the financial commitments and personal sacrifices With the Zebras, Mom, your role in planning last year's tournament was amazing, and you helped make it a success for the entire organization. Dad, my first and most steadfast coach, your support has been invaluable, from rebounding drills in front of the house to offering post-game advice and keeping track of my stats. You have been instrumental in my development as a player. Thank you both for attending every game and tournament You've been my biggest fans throughout this journey, and I am truly grateful for your unwavering support and love. I couldn't have done it without you. I love you both.

To The Zebra Organization:

I want to thank the Zebra Organization for giving me a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Zebra community which gave me a second home, countless memories, and a place where I could play the game that I love so much.

To My Coaches:

Thank you Coach Bryce for everything you’ve done for our squad. You pushed us not just to be better athletes and teammates, but also to be more successful individuals overall. You’ve witnessed our team develop and evolve over the years, and we wouldn’t be where we are now without your direction and assistance You take the time out of your weekends to spend them with a bunch of teenagers messing around on and off the court. I’d also like to thank Coach Brett, who was always there to encourage me, whether I had a good or bad game.

To My Teammates:

I want to thank my teammates, with whom I’ve been playing since we were young. It’s been a pleasure to share the court with you guys over a decade. We won multiple titles together, and our off-court time built a bond of friendship and brotherhood. The game brought us together, and the pleasure went beyond the court To my Zebra brothers, even if our Zebra journey is over, you will always be a part of my life.

As I prepare to conclude my final season as a Zebra, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey I've embarked on within this organization This club has been more than just a place to play basketball; it's been a second home where I've not only pursued my passion for the sport I love but also forged enduring friendships with individuals who feel like family. The memories created here will forever hold a special place in my heart. As I move forward, I'll never forget the camaraderie of my teammates, the guidance of my coaches, and the unwavering support of the parents who made The Zebra Organization a welcoming and inclusive community. I am grateful for the profound impact this remarkable organization has had on my life.

To My Coaches:

Coach Bryce, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the time you've invested in us, attending all the games and practices, and even showing up to watch my high school games On the court, you've imparted invaluable lessons, and I am truly honored to have had you as my coach.

Coach Brett, thank you for your consistent presence and the energy and humor you have always brought to every practice. I appreciate the time you've dedicated to the team, whether it was during tournaments, games, or practices I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive coach.

To My Teammates:

Thank you for all the memories I have made along the way. It's been an incredible experience to play alongside each and every one of you, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an exceptional team Whether we were celebrating victories or persevering through losses, we always played as a team. I cherished the times when we were grabbing a bite to eat, exploring the local mall, or simply goofing around in the hotel. Thank you for the countless memories, both on and off the court, that have made this journey truly unforgettable.

To My Family:

To my mom, thank you for always being there for me. No matter what, you were always supporting me, and I am truly grateful for that. You have helped me become who I am. Reflecting on my basketball journey, I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Zebras. When I decided to try out during the high school basketball offseason in my junior year, I couldn't have imagined the incredible experiences that I would have upon joining this team. Playing with my teammates and sometimes against them (in high school), the Zebra organization has been a truly unique and enriching experience Each game and team event has left an indelible mark on my heart, filled with memories that I will carry with me for a lifetime. I am profoundly grateful for every moment spent wearing the Zebra jersey.

To My Coaches, Bryce and Brett:

Thank you for your incredible support, guidance, and dedication throughout my time with the Zebras Though short, under your coaching, I have grown not only as a player but also as a person. Your encouragement and belief in my abilities have propelled me to new heights on the court and off the court. Your mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my basketball journey. I am deeply appreciative of the countless hours you've invested in helping us all develop both as an athlete and as an individuals

To My Teammates:

Words can’t express the memories we’ve shared and the lessons I have learned We have shared tournament wins, loses, and countless unforgettable moments that have forged bonds. Each of you brings something unique to the court, and I am endlessly thankful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside such a talented and dedicated group of individuals. Ryland, you made the transition onto the team a smooth one and as a teammate or opponent, I enjoy being able to share the court with you. Adin, you shoulda transferred to Paly, with you we would have won states this year without a doubt. It has been so awesome running the pick-and-roll with a reliable big man in the middle like you! Jarek, through all the ups and downs of a

team, I admire the competitiveness and heart you bring to the game Zach, it's great to share the floor with you, bringing the energy with your strong finishes at the rim. Myles, the sharpshooter. You wear Klay’s shoots and shoot like him, being able to pass to a shooter like you has bailed me out so many times. Daniel, it was fun watching you play on senior night and even more fun sharing the court with you. Thanks to all my Zebra teammates for welcoming me into this family and this brotherhood.

To My Parents:

Thank you for the countless hours spent supporting my basketball passion, from driving me to practices to feeding me, and cheering me on. I will always remember when I broke Dad’s ankles in the front yard and at Uncle Alec’s house. Dad, thank you for always helping with my shooting, and coaching me in elementary and middle school. Thanks for all of those shooting sessions and competitive games of 21 after dinner. Thanks, Mom for helping me balance my school work and basketball, while also bringing Kona to all the basketball games Thanks for helping me get on so many basketball and sports teams that really helped me grow. Thanks to my brother Chase for being at my games and cheering me on, also sometimes filming when Dad couldn’t (even if you had to get paid to do it). You guys have helped me become who I am today and I am forever grateful. Love you, Tyler
