ZEBROS PROJECTS WEB-BASED REMOTE NAVIGATIONAL ROBOT FOR MULTICLASS HUMAN-ROBOT INTERACTION
ABSTRACT Robots and human are inter-related because robots are built to serve human. Mobile robot that is equipped with vision capability and remote navigation is able to fulfill multiclass human-robot interaction (HRI) for various localization methods, interaction modes and human experience of the robot. With the advancement of embedded system and communication technology, robot can run on smaller platform and allow human navigation from distant location. In this paper, design of a remote navigational mobile robot based on live video streaming and steering control via a web browser over the Wi-Fi network is presented. The robot acts as the server and the client is the remote human operator. The project takes emphasis on building the robot that runs on a compact embedded system board, namely the Mini2440, for video streaming to remote client and linkage with the client to receive control inputs over the internet. The Mini2440 board also transfers the remote control inputs to a microcontroller board that runs on a PIC microcontroller through the UART interface. The microcontroller board then controls the pin electronics for the motor driver. A self-contained mobile robot prototype for indoor navigation was built. Experiment result shows that live video streaming from server to client is achievable at average of 0.67s video lag through the MJPEG-streamer. Robot navigation has been performed with condition that the control tool used by the remote operator has sufficient processing power for online video feed. PROPOSED SYSTEM Design of a mobile robot platform that could satisfy the various HRI classes listed in the mobile robot to be capable of robot vision and wireless communication for live video feed and operator control from remote location as a minimum requirement. In this system, a monocular vision is embedded onto the robot. Binocular vision can be feasible by integrating another camera to the robot. Binocular vision is commonly facilitated in mobile robots for depth perception. However, depth perception using monocular vision is also achievable through other means of computations, such as the motion parallax, kinetic depth perception and perspective view. The robot is mounted with a generic universal serial bus (USB) web camera. By having a camera, the robot can be integrated with the ability to detect, recognize and track objects. Thus, the robot vision could be expanded to engage the robot in natural HRI at immediate location. Most importantly, robot navigation can be observable at intermediate and remote location through vision but with dependency on the wireless network coverage. Development of robot’s movement mainly falls under the branch of mechanical, electronics and system control engineering. ZEBROS PROJECTS is a subset of artificial intelligence and computing. Another vital area of study in robotic is the human robot interaction (HRI) due to close association between human and robot in various manners. Nevertheless, symbiotic relationship of broad range of technologies is required in development of mobile robots. The RNR developed is self-contained. All components and power supply are mounted on the chassis with a base dimension of 20cm x 30cm. The sustainable duration factors in the current draw of all components, state of operation, surface which the RNR navigate on and specification of batteries utilized. In order to test the RNR electro-mechanical performance, the RNR is navigated along different obstacle courses. The RNR can run through smooth marble or rough texture terrain, such as a cloth towel. Besides level surface, the obstacle courses also consist of slopes. The RNR is able to traverse up to slopes of 30°. However, it is unable to transition from a level surface to a downward slope of more than 10° or from an upward slope of more than 10° to a level surface, unless the transition of surface angle is made gradually incline or decline. Small wheel diameter and lack of suspension system result in low ground clearance of the robot.
