‘Drawing out her subjects most intimate stories, Pai delivers an engrossing and compassionate account of their lives.’ Sunday Times
Who are those lads? Those irate faces in far right street mobs? In this fantastically daring book, Hsiao-Hung Pai, an ‘inscrutable foreigner’, follows a group of individuals who got caught up in the wave of far right street movements beginning in 2009. Among them are Darren, who took part in the formation of the English Defence League; a Reading-based activist nicknamed Viking, who once occupied the cathedral in Derby in order to assert his right to carry a sword; and the infamous Tommy Robinson, founder of the EDL, whom Pai saw change from a young, foul-mouthed Luton kid to a well-received, suited and booted, Oxford University guest speaker. Delving deep into the day-to-day lives of the most marginalised section of the white working-class, Pai reveals that their ideas are not an aberration in modern British society; on the contrary, not only are they very much a part of it but they are constantly rejuvenated and mainstreamed by the media and powers that be. Hsiao-Hung Pai is a writer best known for her books Chinese Whispers, which was short-listed for the 2009 Orwell Prize, and Scattered Sand, which won the Bread and Roses Award in 2013. Pai’s third book, Invisible, was serialised in the G2 section of the Guardian.

‘A captivating and absorbing account that reveals how the people and the land of Madagascar captured her heart.’ Sir David Attenborough
‘Provides a unique insider’s account of major environmental efforts in one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.’ New Scientist
An eyewitness account of First World conservationists’ attempts to rescue the extraordinary biodiversity of Madagascar – and the environment of its people. Madagascar is one of the world’s natural jewels, with over ninety per cent of its wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Few people knew it better than the pioneering primatologist and conservationist, Alison Jolly. At the book’s heart is a conflict between three different views of nature. Is the extraordinary forest treasurehouse of Madagascar a heritage for the entire world? Is it a legacy of the forest dwellers’ ancestors, bequeathed to serve the needs of their living descendants? Or is it an economic resource to be pillaged for short-term gain and to be preserved only to deliver benefits for those with political power? Exploring and questioning these different views, this is a beautifully written diary and a tribute to Madagascar. Alison Jolly (1937–2014) was a primatologist known for her studies of lemur biology. She wrote for both popular and scientific audiences and conducted extensive fieldwork on lemurs in Madagascar, primarily at the Berenty Reserve, a small private reserve of gallery forest set in the semi-arid spiny desert area in the far south of Madagascar.

While working at the Financial Times, investigative journalist Matt Kennard uncovered a scam – a deception and rip-off of immense proportions. From slanging matches with Henry Kissinger to afternoon coffees with the man who captured Che Guevara, Kennard’s unbridled access over four years to the crème de la crème of the global elite left him with only one conclusion. The world as we know it is run by a squad of cigar-smoking men with big guns, big cash and a reach much too close to home. But, through encounters with high-profile opponents of the racket, such as Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Gael García Bernal and others, Kennard shows that human decency remains. Now it’s time for the world’s citizens to also uncover the racket. Matt Kennard is a Fellow at the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Irregular Army (2012) and has worked as a staff writer for the Financial Times in London, New York and Washington, DC. He has written for the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and the Guardian. He graduated as a Stabile Investigative Fellow from the Columbia Journalism School.

Eye-opening and controversial, this book reveals first-hand the dilemmas of providing foreign aid at the sharp end, and how many of the world’s leading aid agencies have been compromised by the so-called War on Terror. In recent years, the ‘War on Terror’ has politicised foreign aid in a way never before seen. Aid workers are being killed at an alarming rate, and beneficiaries in war-torn countries abandoned to their fate as a result. From the ravaged streets of Mogadishu to the sweltering heat of Helmand, Peter Gill travels to some of the most conflict-stricken places on earth in order to reveal the true relationship between aid agencies and the Western military. In doing so, he finds that while some aid agencies have clung to their neutrality against ever stiffer odds, others have compromised their impartiality in order to secure official funds. In a world where the advance of Islamic State constitutes the gravest affront to humanitarian practice and principle the aid world has faced in a generation, Gill poses the crucial question – can Western nations fight in a country and aid it at the same time? Peter Gill is a journalist specialising in developing world affairs. He has been South Asia and Middle East correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and has travelled widely in Africa and Asia as a current affairs reporter for ITV, the BBC and Channel 4.

Victor Kiernan provides a rich and insightful analysis of eight of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, revealing how they were shaped by the social and political upheavals of his age. The seventeenth century saw the brief flowering of tragic drama across Western Europe. And in the plays of William Shakespeare, this form of drama found its greatest exponent. These Tragedies, Kiernan argues, represented the artistic expression of a new social and political consciousness which permeated every aspect of life in this period. In this book, Kiernan sets out to rescue the Tragedies from the reductionist interpretations of mainstream literary criticism, by uncovering the wider historical context which shaped Shakespeare’s writings. Opening with an overview of contemporary England, the development of the theatre, and a portrait of Shakespeare as a writer, Kiernan goes on to provide an in-depth analysis of eight of his Tragedies – from Julius Caesar to Coriolanus – drawing out their contrasts and recurring themes, and exploring their attitudes to monarchy, war, religion, philosophy, and changing relations between men and women. An invaluable resource for those looking for a new perspective on Shakespeare’s writings. Victor Kiernan (1913–2009) ranks among Britain’s most distinguished historians. After a fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge, and a long period spent teaching in India, he joined the History Department at the University of Edinburgh, where he served as professor of modern history from 1970 until his retirement.

‘a remarkable achievement. It will become a classic.’ Christopher Hill
‘The strength of this book lies in the total view of political and social conditions of the period which underpins it ... Unlike so many other books on Shakespeare … it will not scare off the nonacademic reader.’ Guardian
Although Shakespeare is rightly celebrated for the continued relevancy of his plays and poetry today, we too often lose sight of the wider historical context which shaped his work. In Shakespeare: Poet and Citizen, Victor Kiernan shows that Shakespeare was profoundly sensitive to the great social and political upheavals of his age. By placing the plays within this context of an emerging modernity, Kiernan shows that these social transformations, and especially the changing roles of women, are crucial to our understanding of the Comedies, in which the confusion of identity, disguise and cross-dressing play a central role, while the Histories similarly reflect the demise of feudal allegiances and the development of the modern state. Shakespeare: Poet and Citizen provides a rich resource for both students of literature and for the general reader looking for new insight into the life of our greatest dramatist.

In this far-reaching and decisive text, Jacques Bidet examines and unites Marxian and Foucauldian criticisms of capitalist modernity. The intersection between capital and the market is crucial for Marx, while for Foucault, the organisational aspects of capital are what really matter. According to Marx, the ruling class is identified with property; whereas for Foucault, it is those who control knowledge who rule. Bidet identifies these two sides of capitalist modernity as ‘market’ and ‘organisation’, showing that each leads to specific forms of social conflict: against exploitation and austerity, over wages and pensions, on the one hand, and against forms of ‘medical’ and work-based discipline, control of bodies and prisons, on the other. Bidet’s impetus and clarity, however, serve a greater purpose: uniting two souls of critical social theory, in order to overcome what has become an age-long separation between the ‘old left’ and the ‘new social movements’. Jacques Bidet is a philosopher and social theorist and professor emeritus in the Philosophy Department at Université de Paris X – Nanterre. Books of his available in English include Exploring Marx’s Capital (2007) and A Critical Companion to Contemporary Marxism (2007).

Space is both a product and a prerequisite of social relations. It has the potential to block and to encourage certain forms of encounter. In Common Space, architect Stavros Stavrides calls for us to conceive of space-as-commons: to think beyond the notions of public and private space and then to understand common space not only as space that is governed by all and remains open to all, but that explicitly expresses, encourages and exemplifies new forms of social relations and of life in common. Through a fascinating, global examination of social housing, self-built urban housing and settlements, street trade and art, graffiti, occupied space, and liberated space, Stavrides carefully shows how spaces for commoning are created. Moreover, he explores the connections between processes of spatial transformation and the formation of politicised subjects to reveal the hidden emancipatory potential of contemporary, metropolitan life. Stavros Stavrides is an architect, activist and associate professor at the School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens, where he teaches courses on social housing design, and the meaning and significations of metropolitan experience.

There is something disconcerting about a theoretical position that surrenders the search for meaning and knowledge in favour of pleasurable surprises. With grace and elegance, Jonathan Allan asks us to admit that the anus seems caught up in a grand narrative, the very ‘ground zero of gayness’. So what is our critical obsession with orientation? What would happen if we privileged the anal dimensions of texts and of cultural analysis? What if we relaxed, loosened up our critical inquiries, embraced the fullness of the pleasure of the text, and removed ourselves from the hermeneutics of suspicion? In a resolute deviation from the governing totality of the phallus, the very site of difference, Reading from Behind offers a radical reorientation of the anus and its role in the collective imaginary. It exposes what is deeply hidden in our cultural production, to fundamentally diminish, if not negate, the seemingly unquestioned authority of paranoid, critical thought. A beautiful work that invites us beyond the rejection of phallocentricism, beyond the remarkable pleasure and privilege of not knowing and unknowing, to a space of inclusion. Jonathan A. Allan holds the Canada Research Chair in Queer Theory at Brandon University, Canada.

Post-Gay offers a new and radically different interpretive framework for our understanding of neoliberalism and sexuality, one which seeks to reinvigorate queer theory and to rekindle the early gay rights movement’s liberationist spirit. The belief of many in the early sexual liberation movements was that capitalism’s investment in the norms of the heterosexual family meant that any challenge to these norms was invariably anticapitalist. In recent years, however, queer and gay subcultures have become increasingly mainstream and commercialised (as seen, for example, in corporate backing for gay pride events), while the initial radicalism of the gay rights movement has given way to relatively conservative goals such as marriage and adoption rights. David Alderson seeks to account for these shifts in both the gay movement and wider society while also offering a new and radically different interpretive framework. Through a critical reassessment of the work of the heterodox Marxist Herbert Marcuse, as well as of the cultural theorists Raymond Williams and Alan Sinfield, he interrogates our understanding of neoliberalism and sexuality, and reaffirms the gay rights movement’s countercultural origins. David Alderson is senior lecturer in modern literature at the University of Manchester and Visiting Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is co-organiser, with Laura Doan, of the Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture at Manchester.

‘This book will surely become required reading in many courses in women’s and gender studies and in sexuality studies.’ Elizabeth Arveda Kissling, Eastern Washington University
‘Wonderfully lucid, accessible ... My students are going to love this book!’ Marjorie Jolles, Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Roosevelt University
Now revised and expanded, this work remains an essential guide to anyone with an interest in gender, sexuality, and the relationship between feminism and queer theory. Feminism is Queer provides a valuable introduction to the intimately related disciplines of gender and queer theory, and develops the innovative concept of ‘queer feminism’, which treats queer theory as being continuous with feminist theory. While there were significant conceptual tensions between second-wave feminism and traditional lesbian and gay studies, queer feminism offers a paradigm for understanding gender, sex and sexuality that overcomes this conflict in order to foster solidarity between those campaigning for women’s and LGBTQ rights. This updated and expanded edition engages with the latest developments in feminism and queer theory, including the new forms of both feminism and ‘antifeminism’ which have developed within online communities; the growing prominence of trans experiences in popular media; and with the relevancy of queer feminism to a new generation of feminist activists. Mimi Marinnuci is a professor of philosophy and gender studies at Eastern Washington University. She has written widely on the relationship between gender, sexuality, and on the role of popular culture as a medium for the production and dissemination of knowledge about who we are as women and men.

This is not a book about alternative sexualities, nor is it a book about desire. The Politics of Everybody examines the production and maintenance of the terms ‘man’, ‘woman’ and ‘other’, the contradictions of these categories, and the prospects of a Marxist approach to queer bodies. Few thinkers have attempted to reconcile queer and Marxist analysis. Those who have propose the key contested site to be that of desire or sexual expression. This emphasis on desire, Lewis argues, is symptomatic of the neoliberal project and has led to a continued fascination with the politics of identity. Lewis develops a theory of gender and the sexed body that is wedded to the realities of a capitalist political economy. Boldly calling for a new, materialist queer theory, Lewis defines a politics of liberation that is beyond intersectional, is transnational, and is grounded in lived experience. Holly Lewis is assistant professor of philosophy at Texas State University, where she teaches continental philosophy, aesthetics and political philosophy.

This collection provides invaluable new insight into the impact of neoliberalism on the ideology and practice of masculinity, as well as the lived experiences of myriad men across the globe. Neoliberalism has had a radical impact on the lived, gendered experiences of people around the world. But while the gendered dimensions of neoliberalism have already received significant scholarly attention, the existing scholarship has given little consideration to men’s identities and experiences. Building on the work of Cornwall and Lindisfarne’s landmark text Dislocating Masculinity, this collection provides a fresh perspective on gender dynamics under neoliberalism. Bringing together a series of short, readable case studies drawn from new ethnographic fieldwork, its subjects range from the experiences of working-class men in Putin’s Russia to colonial masculinities in Southern Rhodesia, and from young British Muslim men to amateur footballers in Jamaica. Andrea Cornwall is professor of anthropology and international development in the School of Global Studies at Sussex University. Frank Karioris is a doctoral candidate in comparative gender studies, with a specialization in sociology and social anthropology from Central European University in Budapest. Nancy Lindisfarne taught social anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, for many years.

‘A powerful critique combined with a framework for a new paradigm linking women, culture and development that draws from richly textured analysis of environment, sexuality, science and technology and cultures of representation. This is an exciting new book.’ Gita Sen, Sir Ratan Tata chair professor, Indian Institute of Management
Feminist Futures interweaves scholarship and social activism to explore the evolving position of women in the global South, and the ways in which these women are resisting subordination and transforming our understanding of development. Working at the intersection of cultural studies, critical development studies and feminist theory, this book articulates a radical and innovative framework for understanding the linkages between women, culture and development, applying it to issues ranging from sexuality and the gendered body to the environment, technology and the cultural politics of representation. At a time when fundamental concerns about social justice, ecological sustainability, economic equity and cultural diversity continue to be sidelined in the mainstream development agenda, this revised and updated edition brings together leading academics, as well as a new generation of activists and scholars, to provide a fresh perspective on the ways in which women in the global South are transforming our understanding of development. A bold and compelling vision for a world liberated from our dependence on fossil fuels and globalisation. Vandana Shiva makes the compelling case that food crises, oil dependency and climate change are all inherently interlinked. Any attempt to solve one without addressing the others is therefore doomed to failure.
Vandana Shiva, a world-renowned environmental leader and thinker, is director of the Research Foundation on Science, Technology and Ecology. Her many books include Ecofeminism, Protect or Plunder and Staying Alive. Shiva has served as an adviser to governments in India and abroad as well as non-governmental organisations, including the Women's Environment Development Organization and the Third World Network. A startlingly original work that demonstrates how and why genocide studies has so far failed to sufficiently engage with settler colonialism, ecocide and capitalism as key drivers of genocides. In this highly controversial and original work, Damien Short systematically rethinks how genocide is and should be defined. Rather than focusing solely on a narrow conception of genocide as direct mass-killing, through close empirical analysis of a number of underdiscussed case studies – including Palestine, Sri Lanka, Australia and Alberta, Canada – the book reveals the key role played by settler colonialism, capitalism, finite resources and the ecological crisis in driving genocidal social death on a global scale. Damien Short is a reader in human rights at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. He is director of the School’s Human Rights Consortium and Extreme Energy Initiative and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Human Rights.

In Jordan, between censorship, repression and election rigging, political activism is limited – despite the democratic opening glimpsed in 1989. In this important new book, Pénélope Larzillière charts the path of longstanding activists and shows how opposition has shifted from underground movements to a heavily controlled public sphere. In this book they discuss their motivations, their commitments and the consequences it has had throughout their lives. These political journeys serve to highlight the general conditions for political activism in a repressive regime, but also the meaning individuals attach to their commitment and their chosen ideologies. How do future activists perceive different points of reference and how do they decide on their first affiliations? Pénélope Larzillière is senior research fellow at the Institute for Research on Development (IRD) in Paris.

Have slums become ‘cool’? More and more tourists from across the globe seem to think so as they discover favelas, ghettos, townships and barrios on leisurely visits. But while slum tourism often evokes moral outrage, critics rarely ask what motivates this tourism, or what are its wider consequences and effects. In this provocative book, Fabian Frenzel investigates the lure that slums exert on their better-off visitors, looking at the many ways in which this curious form of attraction ignites changes both in the slums themselves and on the world stage. Covering slums ranging from Rio de Janeiro to Bangkok, and multiple cities in South Africa, Kenya and India, Slumming It examines the roots and consequences of a growing phenomenon whose effects have ranged from gentrification and urban policy reform to the organisation of international development and poverty alleviation. Controversially, Frenzel argues that the rise of slum tourism has drawn attention to important global justice issues, and is far more complex than we initially acknowledged. Fabian Frenzel is Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Potsdam and lecturer in organisation at the School of Management, University of Leicester. He is co-author of Protest Camps (Zed Books, 2013).

From the streets of Calais to the borders of Melilla, Evros and the US, the slogan ‘No borders!’ is a common thread connecting a multitude of different struggles for the freedom to move and to stay. But what does it mean to make this slogan a reality? Drawing on the author’s extensive research in Greece and Calais, as well as a decade of migrant rights activism, Natasha King explores the different forms of activism which have emerged in the struggle against border controls, and the dilemmas which these activists face in translating their principles into practice. Wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, No Borders constitutes vital reading for anyone interested in how we make radical alternatives to the state a genuine possibility for our times, and raises crucial questions on the nature of resistance. Natasha King teaches in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham, and has previously worked as a caseworker with the British Refugee Council.

The Punitive City Privatised Policing and Protection in Neoliberal Mexico

The increasingly privatised nature of policing has resulted in the criminalisation of urban poverty and social movements. May 2016 224pp Format: 216mm x 138mm ISBNs: 9781783606962 pb 9781783606979 hb Pub date: Extent:

In the eyes of the global media, modern Mexico has become synonymous with crime, violence and insecurity. But while media fascination and academic engagement has focussed on the drug war, an equally dangerous phenomenon has taken root. The Punitive City explores the contradictory responses of politicians and local residents to the extreme levels of security privatisation sweeping the region. Müller argues that what has emerged in Mexico is not just a punitive urban democracy in which, despite the formal legal empowerment of the city’s residents, those at the social and political margins face growing violence and exclusion; more alarmingly, it would seem that clientelism in the region is morphing into a private, political ‘protection racket’. By side-stepping the neoliberal-inspired drug-war discourse, The Punitive City identifies the root causes of insecurity in the region. Markus-Michael Müller is an activist and professor of Latin American politics at the Freie Universität Berlin. His most recent work addresses the exclusionary consequences of the rule of law in Latin America, as well as the human rights situation in the prison system. He is the author of Public Security in the Negotiated State (2012).

Social movements throughout contemporary Latin America are successfully influencing and shaping media policy. In this highly original and detailed study, María Soledad Segura and Silvio Waisbord scrutinise the goals, tactics and impact of civic media movements across the region, demonstrating the full extent of media activism on domestic policy and politics. Offering both a historical perspective on media and civil society and an in-depth analysis of the contemporary situation, Media Movements goes beyond simple conceptions of ‘the national’ versus ‘the global’ to reveal the complicated process of media policy-making, and to evaluate the significance of local political elites and citizens, global actors, and legal frameworks. With success rates varying across the region, the authors offer an assessment of the impact of citizens’ mobilisation on policy-making, as well as the effects of legislation on ownership, funding, community media, non-profit media and public media. A fascinating analysis of the media in Latin America today. María Soledad Segura is faculty member of the Escuela de Ciencias de la Información of Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and is a researcher at Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas of Argentina. Silvio Waisbord is professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University. His most recent book in English is Reinventing Professionalism (2013).

‘An excellent contribution that will be of great use to students and researchers interested in democracy and foreign aid in subSaharan Africa ... will undoubtedly become a standard book for courses on development assistance and on African politics.’ Devon Curtis, University of Cambridge
A revealing insight into the motives, dynamics and consequences of the increasing amounts of development aid given by the West to authoritarian governments in Africa. In 2013 almost half of Africa’s top aid recipients were ruled by authoritarian one-party states. While the West may claim to promote democracy and human rights, in practice donors have seen their aid policies become ever more entangled with the survival of their authoritarian protégés. Local citizens thus find themselves at the receiving end of a compromise between aid agencies and government elites, in which development policies are shaped to maintain the status quo. Through contributions by leading experts exploring authoritarian development politics in a variety of countries, Aid and Authoritarianism in Africa exposes the impact of foreign aid on military assistance, rural development, electoral processes and domestic politics. In the process, it raises an urgent and too often neglected question: to what extent are foreign aid programmes actually perpetuating authoritarian rule? Tobias Hagmann is associate professor at Roskilde University, a research associate at the University of Zurich and a fellow with the Rift Valley Institute. Filip Reyntjens is professor of African law and politics at the University of Antwerp.

Facing threats ranging from Islamist insurgencies to the Ebola pandemic, African regional actors are playing an increasingly vital role in safeguarding peace and stability across the continent. But while the African Union has demonstrated its ability to deploy forces on short notice and in difficult circumstances, the challenges posed by increasingly complex conflict zones have revealed a widening divide between the theory and practice of peacekeeping. This much-needed work argues that responding to these challenges will require a distinctively African model of peacekeeping, as well as a radical revision of the current security framework. In doing so, the authors provide a long overdue assessment of the ways which African peace operations have evolved over the past decade. This is a vital resource for all those seeking solutions and insights into the immense security challenges which Africa is facing today. Cedric de Coning is a senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and a senior advisor for ACCORD. Linnéa Gelot is a senior researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute, a senior lecturer at the School of Global Studies and an affiliated NUPI fellow. ‘An invaluable contribution – a truly remarkable synthesis of the pathways to Congolese economic improvement and the many roadblocks along the way – the succinct and sparkling summation of the key elements of the political economy is most useful. The author’s capacity to convey a rich treasure chest of information and acute analytical skills make this a landmark work.’ Crawford Young, University of Wisconsin
The Democratic Republic of Congo has the natural resources the world needs: it is crucial to satisfying our craving for the latest high-tech gadgets; the Inga Dam could light up all of Africa; and Congo’s farmers could feed a billion people. These are the realities redefining the country’s strategic contribution to a globalised world – a resource paradise for some, but an environmental nightmare for others. Congo’s Environmental Paradox analyses the new dynamics at play in the country’s crucial forest, mineral, land, water and oil sectors, revealing the often complicated interactions between political power, natural resources and the various sectors themselves. Connecting the dots, it shows how we need to fundamentally rethink power, politics and resource management in contemporary DRC. Theodore Trefon is senior researcher at the Belgian Royal Museum for Central Africa, adjunct professor of international relations at Boston University Brussels and lecturer in environmental governance at ERAIFT/University of Kinshasa. He is the author of Congo Masquerade (Zed Books, 2011) and Reinventing Order in the Congo (Zed Books, 2004).

A vital contribution to the creation of a more equitable agenda for social, economic, political and ecological justice which can point the way towards a more holistic theory and practice of development. As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) pass their 2015 deadline and the international community begins to discuss the future of UN development policy, Poverty and the Millennium Development Goals brings together leading economists from both the global North and South to provide a much-needed critique of the prevailing development agenda. By examining current development efforts, goals and policies, it exposes the structurally flawed and misleading measurements of poverty and hunger on which these efforts have been based, and which have led official sources to routinely underestimate the scale of world poverty, even as the global distribution of wealth becomes ever more imbalanced. Alberto D. Cimadamore is the director of the Comparative Research Programme on Poverty (CROP) of the International Social Sciences Council, Norway. Gabriele Koehler is a development economist, and a visiting fellow at UNRISD. Thomas Pogge is director of the Global Justice Program and Leitner professor of philosophy and international affairs at Yale University.

It is widely understood that good affordable ecohousing needs to be at the heart of any attempts to mitigate or adapt to climate change. This is the first book to comprehensively explore eco-housing from a social and political perspective. It starts from the premise that we already know how to build good ecohouses and we already have the technology to retrofit existing housing. Yet relatively few eco-houses are being built. Featuring over thirty case studies of eco-housing in Britain, Spain, Thailand, Argentina and the USA, this book conceives (eco-)housing as significantly more than the physical structure alone and explores the ongoing dynamic relationships between people and their homes. By taking this novel social approach, Eco-Homes examines the ways in which radical change to our houses (such as potentially making them more temporary, using natural materials, or relying on manual heating and ventilation systems) requires social changes in how we live. As such it argues that it is not technology, or even politics, which is holding us back in mitigating or adapting to climate change, but deeprooted cultural and social understandings of how we live and what we expect houses to do for us. Jenny Pickerill is a professor of environmental geography at University of Sheffield.

The notion of ‘green growth’ has become increasingly influential in economics and policy circles, with its proponents claiming that, through technological and managerial innovations ranging from geo-engineering to improved efficiency, the dangers of climate change caused by ‘old’ industrialisation can be averted while still delivering economic growth and prosperity in both the developed and developing worlds. Green Growth explores the emergence and purpose of green growth strategies by placing them firmly in their political and ideological context. Bringing together a variety of critical voices in assessing the impact and viability of green growth policies through case studies covering the West, Asia, Latin America and beyond, it proactively asks a number of questions: Why green growth? What sort of society is organised around it, and to what purpose? Can green growth truly lead us to a more sustainable society in a finite world? Bridges the gap between social activism, development and environmental science, and explores how new forms of interdisciplinary cooperation can help to eradicate poverty on a world scale. While the need for effective action towards a greener and socially inclusive economy has long been evident, health promotion in the context of sustainable development has faltered. Arguing that human health is the key factor to sustainable development, this groundbreaking book promotes a fresh, transdisciplinary approach to the eradication of extreme poverty and sustainable development. It calls for new forms of cooperation which cross the traditional boundaries between social activism and science, and which are capable of harnessing the complex knowledge that such radical change requires. ‘An excellent and timely book that is a welcome contribution to the growing debate about alternatives to neoliberalism and privatisation in critical public services.’ Andrew Cumbers, University of Glasgow
How do we provide effective public services in a deeply neoliberal world? In the wake of the widespread failure of privatisation efforts, societies in the global South are increasingly seeking progressive ways of recreating the public sector. With contributors ranging from cuttingedge scholars to activists working in health, water and energy provision, and with case studies covering a broad spectrum of localities and actors – from the communities holding the state accountable for public health in rural Guatemala, to waste pickers in India and decentralised solar electricity initiatives in Africa – Making Public in a Privatized World uncovers the radically different ways in which public services are being reshaped from the grassroots up. David McDonald is professor of global development studies at Queen’s University, Canada, and co-director of the Municipal Services Project. In her own words, the incredible story of the FBI’s most wanted woman. Following recent high-profile cases of police brutality in the US, a new movement has emerged under the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter.’ In that movement, the name and spirit of Assata Shakur has returned to the streets. In 2013 Assata, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of
Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI’s most wanted terrorist list. Her trial and conviction for the murder of a white state trooper in the spring of 1973 was highly controversial and divided America. Her autobiography is a major contribution to the history of black liberation. Assata Shakur escaped from a US maximum security prison, was granted asylum in Cuba, and has been a fugitive ever since.
