The gallery encompasses the energy of Sophia Calle and her work. Sophie uses art to escape, find guidance, and forgets her worries. She gets lost through art. The gallery is an immersion into space. The entry of the gallery is tucked away in Freeman Alley, it must be found. Once found the space’s secrets are revealed through circulation. The exterior allows for visual and physical interaction through material changes. The interior consists of lofted floors and intersecting walls, allowing for moments of light and visual interaction. The space allows the visitor to be guided and get lost. The minimal interference of structure allows for interchanging spaces, and gives the curator of the gallery room to design their curations freely.

I am here to bring to life an art gallery. The definition of an art gallery is: a room or building for the display or sale of works of art. A display is not always permanent and a sale is gone once sold. The art is never final. As an art display changes or an art piece is sold, new art is displayed. New art, new creation, new artist. Implementation of a structural system provides this discipline and rules on how a building can stand. Without the set structural framing systems a building cannot exist. One cannot disregard structure. The exploration of different structural systems allows for guidance of design. The system explored here consists of a horizontal structural striations. This gives me freedom to study placements of columns and easily allow for changes. That also allows for multiple lofted levels.

The second level of the gallery is meant for observation, while the ground level focuses on interaction. The ground level is visible from above. The in-between space holds the non-gallery and transition spaces. The exterior of the gallery will provided a surface for visual and physical interaction, while encompassing the energy of Sophie Calle. These surfaces will have the words of “Take Care of Yourself” written on the exterior through different mediums, languages, and forms. These mediums maybe be glass, translucent material, metal, melted silver nitrate, and mirrors. The creation of space and form is continuing to evolve through addition of program and exploration of materiality.

Distinction through facade is what invites a visitor to a space.

For the gallery, the image portrayed is that of Sophia Calle. Her words, her work, and her energy on the facade invite the visitor. The heart of the space is the work inside, the meaningful art. Like Sophie Calle’s own images and work, there is more to the space when you enter it and get to know it.

The meeting with the structural consultants last week made me realize not to over complicate my structure. I tended to add load bearing walls when they were not needed.

The cores ae especially important in a gallery, as gallery spaces are adjusted to different mechanical requirements for the art it’s housing. The walls in the interior vary in size creating a maze like experience. This experience guides the visitor. It allows them to lose control in the space, andallows the space to make the decisions for them. One moment the visitor is able to see beyond a wall, or is in a lit space and the other the visitor is lost by a very large wall.

Configuration of program and concept leads to creation of form and space. The constraint is the program square footage, this creates guidance for the creation of space. The concept of denim is explored through its identity. Denim is an all American staple from the beginning of its time. It was first introduced for gold mining in the 19th century, since then it has been re-identified throughout history and continues to evolve in form and meaning. Identity has multiple entities. Materiality is an aspect of the identity of architecture as well as social permeability and scale. Identity has a DNA through which one can reveal or conceal. While the form of blean jeans gives identity to the user, ththe form of buildings gives identity to architecture. Physical aspects of denim are translated into a building language: Image is given by form and site constraint, social interaction is pogram , and technology is material. Re-identified through visual connection, the denim jean takes shape and re-identifies the image of the user. The building massing takes shape and re-identifies the image of the site. The site for the project is located in Newark, New Jersey. Newark’s former identity was one of a hub for factories and production in the 1800s during the industrial revolution. Throughout history the city has been re-identified numerous times. The most recent identity of Newark is of a city bouncing back from a time of poverty and crime. During this time Newark has been deemed a food desert, where there is limited access to fresh and affordable food. The idea of production is re-identified from the post-industrial context and with the idea of a vertical farm, the place of production which is the Urban Farm Tower.

An undulating surgace creates a landscape re-identifying with the original parkland that once stood on this site. The tower is rigidly planned around the dimmensions of the growing cart. The tower is an efficient machine for growing.

As the city of Newark,NJ recovers from massive public divestment and the movement of affluence to the suburbs during the last century, the task at hand was to investigate who serves and is served by the revitalized city. By engaging in the active redevelopment of downtown Newark as it re-embraces its identity as a center of technological innovation, Echo catalyzes urban revitalization through the intersection of work (office environments) and play (Education). Newark has for the past two decades acted as a test bed for both publicly and privately led reuse of hollowed out urban cores and post-industrial cities. The next chapter of downtown Newark will in many ways be written by companies such as Audible.com. Through the use of gathering, social investment, and food Echo serves as a cultural center for Newark. The value proposition of Echo is to strengthen the culture of the community through collection, projection, and cultivation. The project is located on Halsey Street which is the cultural hub of the downtown area. Audible.com and the community have one thing in common, that is a voice. Audible provides a prodcut, the audiobook, which is its voice. The community’s voice is its art, culture, food, literature, and services. Audible and the community can come together to collect and project the voice of Newark. The is applied through shape, materiality, program and technology.

04 ECH O - C U LT URA L CE NT E R

The form of the building is determined through the connections of the community. This includes expanding the character of Halsey St and connecting it to Washington Park, the LGBTQ Center, and the North Star Academy

Like the company’s product, which is sleek & minimal in design, they favor an industrial aesthetic, free of ornamentation and with a high-contrast palette of black & white, while honoring each local market in which they are applied. As NYC has long be romanticized for its brawny steel-framed skyscrapers, cast-iron buildings, and suspension bridges, our design leverages architectural and material concepts including solid & void; iron & steel; and structure & suspension. These concepts formed the basis of the design, driving the architecture of the space throughout. Seen in every large gesture and detail, the space has a common language that translates a clear prescence for the brand.

Executive Conf Room Mass Diagram

Executive Conference Room Rendering

A volumetric study of this complex, multi-floor location revealed a way to put these concepts into play. We thought of each space through the addition and/or subtraction of masses and voids. The results created the opportunity to visually punctuate the space: for example, where a void is “cut” into a mass - like the way a recessed space “cuts” into the ceiling of the conference room (left) - the cut is marked by an abrupt change in finishes.

10TH FLOORLea CONSTRUCTION PLANRenzo Piano’s NY Times Building as the location for their new1offices. The building is strategically designed on 5x5 grid Williams Tag chose and raised flooring which allows for efficient retrofitting. The layout of the offices are primarily on the east and west sides of the building perimeter windows and along the north and south sides of the building core, allowing for open office workstations on the rest of the floorplate. The southwest corner of the plan is the client facing suite and reception. The client facing suite consists of high-end finishes and provides an open space for entertaining and events. The overall color palette of the office space is very moody, and elegant. Williams Lea Tag began as a start-up but are currently a very established company. The design of the space explores the typical typology of a “tech office” with bold finishes and bold colors but with a more established and high end approach.

Typical Floor Plan Status: Built Location: One New York Plaza, New York, NY 1004. evise Layo i age Role:t Project Architect / Designer

The client Brookfield, and their tenant Convene had a strong affinity for a welcoming, luxurious, and functional client facing space. The “village area” (on the left) is the central focus of the floor plan. It is a space designed for business, 04/22/2019—Design Presentation roo el onvene e or la a lounging, events, and dining. The carefully curated materials, and furniture of the space were selected to invoke a sense of comfort as well as luxury. The terrazzo was custom poured and flown in from Italy. The wood ceiling was custom stained and carefully cut and assembled on site. The reception desk, and booth seating were all custom designed millwork. The wallpaper in the village area huddle rooms were a custom finish to match the adjacent paint. The open office area is strategically designed for flexibility for future clients. All openings and layouts of workstations are placed to allow for standard office front installations as required in the future. This allows the client to accomodate more or less tenants as needed.

31st Floor Plan

31st Finish Plan

Omnicom Group, a global marketing and corporate communications holding company, relocated their executive offices to a 12,800 square feet space in New York City. Materiality is used to define typology of space. For example: Angled wooden ceilings are used to indicate client facing areas or executive offices/admins. The overall palette of the design is very minimal with contrasting high end finishes of dark wood and light marble. Every seam and groove in the materials are intentional and meticulously placed to indicate zoning and provide a grid for the plan.
