Yoko came into my life when I was still a girl in Liverpool. Me and my friends adored her from afar. She led us to think afresh about art, life, love and peace. She seemed to be everything we wanted to be – a bold intelligent artist, a dignified rebel, a tender-hearted critic of society’s hypocrisy, an ingenious original. Now I’ve been fortunate to spend time with her and she is indeed all of those things. Plus she is great, great fun. Perhaps no one can be taken truly seriously unless they have a strong streak of humour? Well, whether that is true or not, Yoko is a wonderful humourist. It’s been wonderful to have her as our Meltdown Curator.
My wish is that we can give her back as much as she gives us. Which is a lot. Jude Kelly, OBE Southbank centre artistic director

Working with Yoko on this year’s festival has been a really profound experience for me and the Meltdown team. Her generosity of spirit, passionate creativity and curiosity, and her love of and optimism for the world are deeply infectious. Meltdown is an extraordinary festival to be part of. The nature of the programme changes every year, strongly reflecting the personality of the curator. This year, Yoko’s desire to examine the world that we live in has been the inspiration for two weekends where we focus on the ideas of Activism and Future Now. We also have a line up of artists performing that is rich and beautifully varied.
My wish would be that we all take a little of Yoko’s amazing spirit away with us. Jane Beese, Southbank Centre Head of Contemporary Music

Welcome to Meltdown 2013! It has been an incredible honour to curate this amazing festival which, for me, sums up the transformative power of music and art, which has been so intrinsic to my own life.
Art encompasses many things; it can be just picking up the phone and calling your mother or a friend, or smiling at a stranger in the street. Every action causes a reaction.
Each of us was born at this time to fulfill a mission. Together we are in the process of healing and creating a better world. Our work is not yet done but it will be done soon. New generations will continue to be inspired by what we create together. The world will continue to evolve and, with all our energies, will become a better place.
We are all here to celebrate the art of people who have effected change on our planet. For me, this Meltdown has been a chance to acknowledge and celebrate artists who have greatly inspired us as a society. As someone whose work is often labeled avant-garde, it’s a great pleasure for me to present such an amazing array of disparate, maverick, unconventional creativity within one festival.
Throughout my life I have believed this and also believed in the power of art to help change society.
I hope this Meltdown gives us all a chance to be inspired, to question, celebrate and, most of all, to have a lot of fun.
I wish all of us will be aware of love for each other: TIME TO TELL YOUR LOVE L o ve, y o ko
