Expansion of Museum of Navarre Cornell University Fall 2017, Studio project Instructor: Fernando Tabuenca Site: Pamplona,Spain Individual The relationship between artworks and the exhibition space should be harmoniously unified. This project is the expansion of Museum of Navarre for contemporary art. The existing building is the gallery mainly for traditional art. Because of the contrast between traditional art and contemporary art, the new expansion provides opposite atmosphere with the existing building based on the characteristics of contemporary art. By studying and exploring the relationship between modern architecture and contemporary art, this building is a new interoperation of Le Corbusier’s Five Points of architecture for contemporary art.

Site: Pamplona, Spain Pamplona or Iruña is the historical capital city of Navarre, in Spain, and of the former Kingdom of Navarre. The project is in the north of Navarrería, which is the oldest part of Pamplona.
The site is located at the boundary between the old city and the new city, landscape and urban. Therefore, this project is not only the expansion of museum of Navarra, but also the connection between old and new, nature and city.
On the north side of the site, there is a river called Arga. Crossing the river, it is the new town of Pamplona. On the east side, there is Real and General Archive of Navarra designed by Rafael Moneo. On the west side, there are residential buildings. On the south side, there is a religion school called St. Thomas College. The site is not far from some significant places of the city, like Pamplona City Council and Cathedral de Santa Maria.
Because of the particularity of the location, this project has strong potential to become a cultural hub to connect old city and new city in Pamplona. as well as natural landscape and cultural history. The potential to create a public space in this location is also strong, therefore idea of creating a combination of plaza and museum is proposed.

Plan Producing Diagram The four sides of the project are facing four different conditions. Because of the different condition, the design of four sides also change according to the site context. The building is facing the new town of Pamplona and beautiful landscape; therefore, the north faรงade is transparent and open to the gorgeous view. The main circulation of the building is also located next to the north faรงade, therefore visitors can enjoy the view by visiting the museum. On the south side, there is a huge stone building with little openings. Therefore, the design of south side is the combination of concrete wall and translucent glass.
On the west side, there are residential buildings. To bring the public activates and community to this area, a public plaza is designed in front of the museum. To keep the privity of residential buildings, the faรงade is translucent, and some trees are added in between the residential buildings and the museum. The east faรงade is transparent facing the existing building, the contrast between old and new, traditional and contemporary can be represented in this area. The characteristics and atmosphere of an exhibition space should be match up with the atmosphere of art works. The contract between the existing building and new expansion also based on the difference between traditional art and contemporary art. Existing building and new expansion are connected by bridge.
Based on the urban context, one side on the building transferred to fit the existing buildings on the south side and create a narrow street to match up with the city pattern. One public plaza is designed in from of the new expansion of the museum. One larger roof terrace is also designed.
Based on the heights of surrounding buildings, the height of the project is lowered to three-story height to match up the urban condition. The cantilever is added to create shadow for public plaza and create larger exhibition space. The entire roof also became a terrace and can be access from the existing building.

Structure
The building occupies 2/3 of the total area, and public plaza occupies 1/3 of the site. The building has five different levels.
The structure of the project is supported by concrete columns and shear walls. The distance between two columns is about 8 meters. These two red blocks are for elevators, egress stairs and bathrooms.
Double-Skin Faรงade
Transparent Glass/ View of Landscape
The double skin faรงade can enable the project to have the sense of lightness. It also enables the building to have transparent skin for the exterior and translucent skin for the interior space.
The building envelope is basically transparent glass. The transparent north faรงade can provide a great view of Pamplona landscape to all visitors and staff. The main staircase is also located next to the north faรงade.

Water Feature
There are two translucent-glass walls. These two walls can help to reduce the directional natural light into the exhibition space. Since the buildings in the west side of the museum, translucent glass can also help to protect the privacy.
Bridge/Outdoor exhibition The bridge is to connect the exhibition space and roof of the new expansion and existing building. The gap between the new expansion and existing building is the outdoor exhibition space for sculptures.
The water feature is located on the south side of main lobby space. It can bring the nature to the building. The shape of the water feature can also keep the width of street to fit the existing city pattern.
Trees/ Plaza A plaza and five trees are designed in front of the museum to create a public space and a distance between the museum and residential buildings. Trees can also help the building to reduce directional natural light.

Circulation There are two entrances. The existing main entrance is kept, and a new entrance for new expansion is added. People from both entrances should go to the lobby first to purchase tickets. Then, there are two different paths. Visitors can choose to visit the contemporary art part first from the ground level to the third level, then go through the bridge to the traditional art part from the top level to the ground level. Another path is to visit the old part first and then go through the bridge to visit the new part. Both paths have the same starting point and ending point. During these paths, visitors can also visit the outdoor exhibition space, cafĂŠ and roof garden.

This is the ground level of the building, where the lobby located. Visitors can access the lobby from both entrances. At this level, there are two starting points to visit the exhibition. Roof The flat roof provides many different options of functions and activates. The roof is connected to the fourth floor of the existing building, which is the cafĂŠ. Therefore the east part of the roof is the exterior cafĂŠ. People can enjoy the beautiful view and food with good weather. The west part is the roof garden and exterior exhibition for some sculptures.

Fish Processing System Cornell University Summer 2017, Studio project Instructor: Tei Carpenter, Jesse LeCavalier Site: Roosevelt Island, New York City Partners: Lawrence Wyman, Linjing Wang, Tianjun Xu Contributions: Idea, Analysis of fish processing, Site Analysis, Sections, Isometric drawings, Physical model, Photography. Fish processing system is typically hided from public. Customers only see and purchase the final productions; however, people do not know where the food come from and how the food made. This project provides another way to see and experience the fish processing system by using architectural methodology. Combining two sections from Temple of Death and Tokyo Opera House, the final section has both memorial form and complex interior spaces. These two characters are significant for the purpose to celebrate and exhibit the fish processing system to public. This project is next to the Cornell Tech. Therefore, the cooperation with the institution is also applied in this project.

Combination of Sections The section of this project is combined with two sections. One is the Temple of Death by Etienne-Louis BoullĂŠe and Tokyo Opera House by Jean Nouvel. The section of the Temple of Death provides the memorial form and the section of Tokyo Opera House provides the complexity of interior space.

Site: Roosevelt Island, New York City This project is located at Roosevelt Island, New York City. It is a narrow island in between Manhattan and Queens. Since the special shape, the island from north to south can be divided into different sections, and each section has different functions and activities. Inspired by this characters, this project has four different towers, and each tower has different functions of fish processing.

Conceptual Section
Towers Roosevelt island is long and narrow. The island can be divided by different sections, each section has particular functions and atmosphere. Inspired by this special character of Roosevelt Island, this projects has four different towers, each tower contains a few steps of fish processing, and based on these different steps, different towers have different designs, functions, and interior spaces. However, all these towers are connected by the open public area at ground level.

Four towers, however, has different functions and characters, the design of these four towers is always based on the combination of these two master sections. In addition to the ground open space, there are also a few bridges to connect different towers to provide easier circulation.

The first tower is the beginning of the entire fish processing system. All fishes import from the east side of the tower. The steps of fishing processing in the tower are bleeding tank, hand filleting, and first quality control. On the top of the tower, there is a cafeteria for Cornell Tech students and public, and the fish of the cafeteria are from this fish processing system.
This the main and tallest tower of this project. The main function of this tower is the museum of fish and fish processing system and transfer the fillet to the last tower for final steps. During the trip from bottom to top, visitor can explore different kinds of fish and different steps of fish processing system. Under the dome, there is a pond with different kinds of fish, visitors can observe and interact with these fish.

The steps of fish processing system in this tower are normal skinning, trimming, and deep skinning. On the top of the tower, there is a classroom and laboratory for fish research and experiments. Students can public can visit here to study and learn the knowledge of fish and fish processing system.
This is the last tower, the steps of fish processing system are final quality control, supper chilling, packing. The storage space is also in this tower. Since these steps require low temperature, therefore the walls in this tower are thicker than others. On the east side of the tower, there is a store to sell fish products that produced in this building, and other fish products export from this tower.

New York City wisely adopts the grid system to adapt its varÂŹious demands and colors of neighborhoods. Every block of the city has its own world with the buildings filling the inside of each block. But the already robust grid system is even more empowered when they are broken by the diagonal axis; Broadway. The project is reimplementing the system of New York but in an inverted grid. Current site of Port Authority Bus Terminal and its ramp connecting the Lincoln tunnel to the terminal are dividing the West Midtown into North and South. Moreover, 41st street has been cut short by the bus terminal on its west and Bryant Park on its east. The inverted void grid has been laid out on the site with the fully public roof park. The void grids will be occupied by the activities, atmosphere, and sentiments of the people filling the grid instead of solid materials like typical NYC block. The ramp has been transformed to park connecting to the High Line. The 41st Street has become a park to further extend the line of people to deep into Midtown. Every moment of the project offers different spatial experience. The project brings a new source of energy into midtown. It honors the original function of the site (bringing people into the city) but through more positive and energetic way.

Conceptual Drawing Grid system
One of the most significant character of New York City is the grid system. From the plan, the city layout is rigid. However, there are unlimited variations inside of different blocks. Inspired by the gird system of New York city, this conceptual drawing shows different types of layouts in the same-size block. Each block has different floor area ratio and divisions. Because of the difference of FAR and divisions, different blocks have different potentials to have different functions.
Public Space
In this drawing, there are four different divisions in each block. The blocks are divide into two, four, eight, or sixteen parts. There are also four different FAR, which are FAR 2, 4, 8, or 16. Therefore, there are totally sixteen types of blocks in this drawing. All blocks are independent, but they all fit into the grid system.
City Blocks Based on different divisions and FAR in each block. The forms and functions for these blocks are also different. Each block has a few optional programs.For blocks with low FAR and less divisions, the potential programs for these blocks could be school, luxury apartment, etc. For blocks with low FAR and more divisions, these blocks can be the spaces for single family houses, company campus, etc.
For these blocks with high FAR and less divisions, the potential uses for these areas can be office buildings since they can offer enough space for a company in one single floor. For blocks with high FAR and more divisions, the potential programs can be highrise apartment buildings since the smaller footprint offers more natural light for each family.

Site: Port Authority Bus Terminal, New York City Therefore, the goal for this project is to use architectural and urban methodology to activate the communication between these three locations and places surrounded. The projected also proposed a potential connection between the existing High Line project and the site to reinforce the connection and communication.
The site of this project is the current location of Port Authority Bus Terminal. The plan is to remove the bus terminal to New Jersey and utilize the site for a building complex for commercial, public, and residential spaces. The site is special and interesting. The site is in between three special locations in New York City, which are High Line, Bryant Park, and Time Square. However, because of the Part Authority Bus Terminal, the connection and communication between these three significant places are blocked.

In addition, to enable the physical connection between the building complex and High Line, the height of this project is relatively low, but the projects provides the entire roof to be the public spaces, which could offer numerous opportunities for public activates, social communities, etc.
Inverted Grid The grid system is one of the most significant character of New York City. Inspired by the existing grid system, this project provides a new form of grid system, which is the inverted grid. In this new system, courtyards become new type of blocks, inside of each same-size courtyard or patio, there are different types of architectural languages, communications, social activates, etc.
There are eight potential types of courtyard with eight different physical forms, however, there are unlimited possibilities of different types of courtyards like there are unlimited different types of blocks in New York City.

Goggles Augmented Reality Virtual reality About one thousand years ago, these terms appeared. I don’t know why they were invented; but, these products were the start of our nightmare.
Dear World, Where are we? I just woke up from a long sleep and found everything changed. We are now living in a paradise. The trees are reaching the sky. The air has sweet fragrances of Gardenia, Rose and Jasmine. The moist breeze is blowing over the beautiful grass, not too hot, nor too cold. The sky is azure, and the clouds are like white marshmallows. It’s the same nice scenery everywhere that I started to wonder, is it real? In this world, everyone is 25 years old and does not age. We have unlimited resources without doing any work. There is no hierarchy, discrimination or persecution. Everyone is equal. There is no illness, cancer or AIDS, and people are living without any pain. There is no country, border or enclave that constantly caused conflicts in the world I lived in. This world is living as one. We are so satisfied with our lives here. We are forgetting where we come from. Maybe everything is illusory and we are just living in a cage, a chip or an integrated circuit. We are in a ‘dream’, which is too attractive for us to wake up. As a great legacy of the Tech Boom in the late 20th century and the early 21st century, Silicon Valley attracts thousands of young people from all around the world, who eager to dig out financial success, to San Francisco. However, when the world is cheering up for Silicon’s success, concerns about Tech Boom are often overlooked, especially the concerns that are so deeply inside human nature. Some are beginning to suggest that tech advancement deprives people’s possibility to have a different life, which they would choose to have if the values of the society are not seduced by high profits in tech/information sectors. Technology is like a flouting cube in the sky with great gravity. All people’s life and work in San Francisco are related to this flouting cube.
STEAM STEM is the abbreviation of four different fields of study, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. However, one field is missed in this term, which is art. There is no development of society and civilization without the contribution of art. Art is one of the most significant aspects, but people often ignore. To insert art into STEM, the interactions and communications between Art and STEM can help the development of both. Many new forms of art like digital paintings, electronic music, are depends on the development of technology, and the innovation of technology and science can also inspired by some artworks. Therefore, the new term STEAM should be the direction of social development, and it benefits for all groups of people.
From Artists to High Tech This drawing shows the transition in San Francisco Bay area from art to high tech. San Francisco has strong history of art and culture. It was one of the most significant city for Beat generation and Hippie. There are many significant artist, musician, painters, and writers lived in San Francisco. However, because of the development of High-tech companies in San Francisco Bay Area, especially in Silicon Valley. Many artiest moved out because of the increasing cost to live in San Francisco. Therefore, the most significant group of people transferred from artists into high-tech people. Bay area also transferred from a center of culture into a center of high technology. Conceptual Models Based on the analysis of the history, urban condition and social environment of San Francisco. Physical models has been used as a tool to address and represent these issues.
Each model has one term that address one part of San Francisco’s culture, history, social condition, or urban situations.

The altitude differences in San Francisco are pretty high. The geographical difference can also reflect the social and political differences.

The urban pattern is diverse. Different districts and neighborhoods have different character, such as the big contract between Tenderloin and financial district.

Culture Map in San Francisco San Francisco has strong history of culture. It was a significant place for Beat generation and hippie. It has the biggest LGBT community. There were so many great writers, artists, and musicians lived and worked in San Francisco.
However, because of the development of technology companies, San Francisco Bay Area became a center of technology, at the same, it lost its history of culture and art. Although there are still many museum and music bars, many artists cannot afford the cost in San Francisco and decided to leave.

Site Selection The intersection of freeways is the site of this project. It has good connection and transportation to other cities, and it is also a confluence of all traffics and people in Bay Area. To south, it can connect to San Jose (Silicon Valley). To north, it can connect to Emeryville and Oakland.
It is also considered to be the connection of two significant universities in Bay Area, Stanford University and UC Berkeley, Therefore This site is a confluence of all different groups of people. there is a good chance to appear a hub for creative class at this location.

Power of culture, politics, and economy The conceptual model represents the potential solution of the current issues. That is the interaction and cooperation between three significant aspects of the society, culture politics and economy. Therefore, the model is constructed by three parts, which represent culture politics, and economy. Economy is the foundation, politics is the support, and culture is the driving force of the social development.
Elevated Cultural Hub To transfer the Magnetic force form technology to culture, this elevated cultural hub provides a huge volume and capability to contain different groups of artists, musicians, writers, performers. Different levels have different types of art, and they all can communicate at the center core. Technology is also applied into this system. The space that artists and high-tech faculties can bring a huge potential for the development of both art and high technology.
STEM Gravity High-tech slavery People are born to be different and we are created to have different interests, different properties, and entitle different gifts. People always have right to choose who they want to be and what they want to do.
However, technology advancement is so successful that tech related areas, which are referred to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer, and Math), have become a huge magnet, to which every single part of the society is gravitated.

Section Model
From the Ground to the Top, Communication between Centers This section model shows the diversity of different types of space from relatively small to huge and also the main connections between major spaces in this complex. The functions and programs for these centers are also different. The interactions and combinations between these programs provides a new social system.
There are two types of circulation to connect this city from the ground to the top, vertical and exploring circulations. There are different types of elevators for vertical circulation. People can go to different levels from different elevators. For exploring circulation, people can access different spaces and centers by using escalators and explore different groups of people in different levels.
Deconstruction of Space Instead of forcing people to use a specific space for a specific program. Creative class can use their own talents to design and define different spaces. By using the methodology of deconstruction, this building offers huge spacial diversity. Therefore, different spaces have different potentials to became different programs. The connection between spaces is also complex and diverse.
The complexity of the interior and exterior space also provides the potential to emerge the complex relationships and connections between different groups of artists and high-tech people. Other significant factors for the social development and stability like religion, nature elements, and entertainments also applied in this space.

Artists Community in New York Iowa State University Spring 2015, Studio project Instructor: Jungwoo Ji Site: Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City Partner: Xiaoyuan Zhang Contributions: Idea, History analysis, Diagrams, Plans, Sections, Isometric drawings, Collages, Physical model, Site model, Photography. Chelsea area was the center of art in New York City, but because of the economic development, this area is losing its characteristics. This apartment aims to offer a culture hub for artists to life and communicate. This building complex also provides a connection between highline and commercial area to help artists to have more connections with public. There are seven different types of units based of different needs from different artists. Under this system, the prosperity of both consumption and production in Chelsea area can be achieved.

Comsumption and Production of Art Works in Chelsea Area Chelsea area was an art center in New York City. Many artists came here to create, produce, and sale their art works. However, the repurposing of highline and economic development exile most artists in Chelsea area. Fade Architectural Association Spring 2016 Instructor: Tommaso Franzolini Individual The goal of this project is using the distributions of different groups of color to create a sequence of people’s attention when they look at this painting. The final product is an abstract model to represent this sequence of attention of different color groups.
The Virgin and Child with Saints 1522 Lorenzo Lotto (about 1480-1556/7)
This painting was made for private devotion. Saint Jerome, the chief inspiration for Christian penitents and hermits, it shown on the left. On the right, Saint Nicholas of Tolentino wears the black habit of the Augustinian order and holds lilies to his breast. The co n on which the infant Christ stands probably refers to his future conquest over death.
Change of Hue
Physical Model This model was constructed by four layers of acrylic, and each layer represents one important color of this painting from red to green, to blue, and to black. This sequence is also the sequence of most people’s attention when they look at this painting. Therefore, this model can be described as a expression of people’s reaction of The Virgin and Child with Saints. There are three connections between four layers of acrylic, and the locations of these connections are the points where the color of red, green, or blue concentrated.
