Design 01 Urban Design
MESO - Taipei city, Taiwan RMIT university third year second studio The site for this project is Taipei City which included busy urban area and rural areas such as river and mountain. This aim of the studio is to identify the weakness of the Taipei city and to develop a solution to change the urban fabric. Taipei City is a developing post industry city; the main industry is based on service industry such as tourism and food industry. In some districts, they are designed for the tourist easy travelling between urban and nature, but there still are some old districts which are not prepared greeting the tourists from inside and outside of nation; also the lack of green spaces and unfriendly street design made the tourists hardly enjoy and experience the true face of these old districts which have great cultural connotation. Residents also are affected and these lead to the disconnection between people. My design is to change the urban building fabrics and the facilities in order to Improve the living quality Strength the unity of community Improve the local economy by the tourist friendly design Reveal the culture value of old districts Improve the safety of the all user
Model mapping Using the treads connecting rest and view points in the mountain that generated the zones where people most likely travelled. We used same method applied to the urban area. Firstly, defined the attractions in the urban area and set the radius 500m(people walking distance) from the points. The overlapping areas would be resting points for the travellers.

This is showing the existing condition of the building types and sub-attraction points of the site. Blue points are the residential and red points are the commercial buildings.
Connected more alleys become the pedestrian path based on the function of the site increasing the experience of ecotourists.
Link the most attractive points to voids space which is providing different programs for eco-tourists to enhance the experience.
Program Design In order to welcome and attract tourists walking into the alleys, I decided to enhance the public facilities and move the small businesses to the alleys. Combination of the residential and commercial area which could encourage the residents and tourists making a conversation. Greenery and needs of tourists are the main points that offer the better living environment.

Currant alleys’ condition The back of the houses are narrow and there stakes lots of sundries, also some illegal tine houses occupied the space which could be use for community room.
Strategy Small commercial Area
Medium commercial Area Opened up the back of the buildings by turning the buildings 1800 degree which created a small piazza at small commercial area. This space still keep the same business style but provide more opportunities that the tourist can have seating area and greenery.
Large commercial Area Connected the back of alleys that created a big square. The space could be use for events and businesses also the rest point for tourists. The residents can use this space as a community room after business hours.
Eliminated the tin houses and created a plaza which can accept more business stalls, also allow cyclists travelling and park in these areas. Green the area also is the main idea and added the public service which are toilet and seating area.
Medium Residential Area Turning the building 1800 degree creates a arcade that people will have more room and chance to meet each others. Installing the public seatings, bike parking racks and greening the space that encourage residents going out and socializing, also, allow tourists travelling in-between the commercial and residential areas.
Large Residential Area Installing the public toilet, pavilion, BBQ facility, seats and camping area on the grass land that will encourage the residents build their community culture and have some events and also promote this area as a good temporary rest point to the tourist who could have deeply conversation.
