Hello! My name is Zenely Martin Rios and I am an A2 student of Photography at Salford City College. For the summer project I set out to produce different outcomes regarding history of photography, portraiture, landscape and narrative photography. On the following pages you will see some of the results after having undertaken a research on diverse artists who worked with similar techniques.

The Medium of Photography For the medium pf photography topic I decided to explore Shutter Speed, specifically fast shutter speed. I looked at the work of Harold Edgerton and Chaval Basil. They both inspired me to capture drops falling and water in its different shapes in general. I shoot this at home using a handy mirror and droping some water on it.

The effects were similar to their work but mine was darker as I did it indoors. I think taking photographs of water always gets you unexpected results because you don’t know how it will be suspended on the air and how exactly you capture the moment.

The Theatre of the Face

Portraits usually reflect the personality and most intimate features of a person. For this project I wanted to include both new techniques and humour. I explored two different ways in which portrait could be represented and investigated on my own until I came up with double exposure pictures and blending portraits. I think that as

a viewer you can percieve the message of each image in different ways. They are all open to interpretation. You can either feel identify with the picture and the feelings or emotions it trabsmit you, or you can simply find it abstract and wonder what went through my mind to compose it, which is also fun.

Within the topic of portraiture I also wanted to explore a creative and maybe humoristic field by blending portraiture of different members of my family. The editing was complicated by I had a really good time taking the pictures and retouching them later on Photoshop. I really recommend trying this technique to photographers who

are looking for something different and original. Besides, you’ll have fun trying to match the same face expression as your friends or family. For this project I took pictures of my brother because we really look like each other) and my mum and me as we were both females of the same family with different ages.

Location & Environment

Taking pictures of the place you live can tell a lot about the way you percieve it and what are your feelings about it. In my case, I chose the area of Salford as I am quite familiar with it by now. I took pictures both in the more developped areas and the traditional and quite villages. I decided to layer them mpnpchromatically because, in my

opinion, this effect suits street and location photography. It makes you see the picture withouth distracting on colours, and that’s what I wanted to achieve. Also, it gives it an old sensation that suggest that even time has passed, the town, the village, the place, has always been there.

Story Telling & Narrative On this part of the project I had to come up with photographs that could actually tell a story. This type of pictures are known as narrative. They’re usually set up and deeply composed. They are rich in iconography, every details matters. I decided to capture daily home moments, such as my brother getting ready to go to school, having breakfast or tweaking his tie. Most of them were not natural as I asked them to pose or do some specific movement. But there are others in which I was only looking through the camera and bang! There you go, you’re narrative picture.

So thank you very much to Christian Martin Rios who doesn’t hesitate to pose for me, even though it is defenitely not his most enjoyable hobby. Thanks Maria Jaquelin Rios botin for her support throghout the whole project and for staying late at night listening to my sketchbook plans. And special thanks to both Katy and Ruari who stood by my side giving me inspiration and advices on how to make my outcomes look the best.
