Glendon
ARCHITECT’S STATEMENT:
The residences at 1717 Glendon Ave. compose a new four-story small-lot subdivision in the Westwood Neighborhood. Goals for this project include uplifting the standard practices of the community while pursuing modern living ideals, using contemporary ecologically-minded, smart and conscious building materials and construction methods. Our practice recognizes the long history of great architecture in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, and we appreciate the opportunity to participate in the evolution. Every floor of each unit is formed by patios and balconies which promote interaction between the building and the neighborhood to sustain a healthy benefit of indoor-outdoor living so traditional to Southern California. All units provide the residents with a large private roof deck containing natural, native drought tolerant plant materials that act as a thermal buffer that naturally reduces mechanical energy consumption. The four residences all supply two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, living room and laundry along with covered garages and a traversable site containing a drought-tolerant landscape design shaping the site on grade. The gently sloping site is graded with a continuous angle reminiscent of a European scale mews town home, urban scape and paved with porous, pervious pavers and an artful security gate similar to Mr. Gaudi’s work in Barcelona at each end of the lot promoting a visual connection to the alley. We believe that breathing life in to the city means opening up visual corridors to the obscure alleys which is a fundamental aspect of Baron Haussmann’s planning strategy of laying out Paris.
14
The building height is the allowed 45 feet, and all setbacks required for small-lot subdivisions are observed. Each unit is supplied with two full-size parking spaces on the ground level and ample living space above. Address: Zoning: Parcel (APN):

GUIDING FIRST PRINCIPLES: Important Drivers to Follow and Apply
One size fits all and multifunctional use of louver systems. Louvers are used for privacy, thermal storage, temperature and light control.
Principle

Linear Circulation
All purpose/ One language
The first principles are the guiding forces for the project. These principles were obtained from researching Joshua Tree, design iterations, and reaching energy efficient goals. These same principles helped in following and organizing the form, aesthetic, and functionality of the educational center design.
Three boxes organize the different louver systems and functions. Outer layer is for complete privacy, blocking out the harsh West sun, and bouncing light into an otherwise dark space. Next is for light filteration and circulation. The inner are the main program spaces and are the most sheltered and enclosed space. Triple layer
Principle Precedents Pull out program Increase in inside space when unit is out Active outside and inside Wheel
By controlling the angle, spacing, and geometry of the louver, one could guide the sunlight and filter it into different programs at different times of the day. This can be achieved by varying the spacing and angling the louvers. These spacings may also affect how the eye adjusts to the light conditions as one moves from one space to the next.
Light manipulation
Pull out furniture Same program but different setting Slider
Having a long building exposes a lot of surface area to the sun on the South and the West. The blocks help prevent direct sun from the West, creates absolute privacy and helps light up dark rooms by bouncing light in. Block wall/ Light bounce

Concrete louver get denser towards the bottom to block out the sunlight during the summer. During the winter the spacing lets the light filter through while also heating up the louvers.

Slide lock/ Adaptive space
Swivel / Rotating wall can rotate in connect inside/outside can rotate to connect rooms rotate them shut for division or privacy
Sliding doors and walls can both be a simple opening, or create an entirely new space. These are used for the adaptive spaces to make the program space larger while simultaneously creating a division elsewhere. It can provide a layer of privacy and enclosure for the outdoor.
Fixed louvers Density and transparency vary on angle Illusion Fixed motion
By stacking many layers, the density begins to create a depth and privacy. Each layer can have separate purposes but together give another effect. Laminate privacy

Overhangs and the shade it provides will create a language for where visitors will stay or take refuge when taking a break. The sun in Joshua Tree is too punishing for most people to enjoy while they are idle. Both the louver and overhangs that connect the parking to the main structure, are spaced in a way that it would only be partially shaded. It would not be a pleasant enough of a space to want to stay but pleasant enough where they would not want to stray away from the course. This will promote circulation along the trail and discourage too much meandering. Zones The site is broken down into zones where the vertical zones dictate porosity and privacy and the horizontal zones determines the program spaces. The intersection of the two zones may create two different lighting conditions and experiences within the same room.
Adaptive zones Some walls are able to slide across and attach to the blocks on the outer most zone. This opens up space inside while enclosing space outside Vertical zones

ZONE ORGANIZATIONS
Horizontal zones
The zones are divided to in a way to describe the different levels of privacy. The privacy level is built up through layering and density. A similar logic can be applied for vegetation and laying out the landscape. Bushes and shrubs that grow below eye level can make up the most open zones, while joshua trees and the like which grow past eye level can begin to make up the partially transparent zones. Finally the most private zones can be made up of rocks and boulders as they are the most opaque features out in the desert. These configurations could occur in both vertical and horizontal zones as well in the micro and macro scale.
MASSING STUDY
The Perez Art Museum in Miami similarly uses the language of lines and surfaces as part of its overall aesthetic. The overhangs are partially covered and it really emphasizes the orthogonal nature of the building. Furthermore I was interested in their gathering space where a heavy curtain slides out, effectively dividing a space and making it more intimate. The Dominus Winery by Herzog & de Meuron is a rectilinear project with an elegant interior space. The exterior consists of one language of the gabion walls. Although there is not much of a variation and quite simple, the exterior with only rocks caged in a wire mesh, is all it takes to make an interesting look on the outside while simultaneously creating a fascinating lighting condition in the interior.

LONG SECTION STUDY: Looking Through from North and South
LOGO
Long section These sections are showing the different zones and how it affects and signals the program and conditions in it. The cut identifies the vertical circulation and its overall linearity of the form and movement inside. The drawing identifies the raised floors, long section for cross ventilation throughout, mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, enclosed and open rooms, exposed structure, and similiar language all throughout.
Short section These drawings depict how the walls operate, and how they look in the two positions. When one wall is active the other side is open. This allows for a connected and larger interior space or a sectioned off and enclosed outdoor space.
