NEW BORN HOUSING Eldery Shop House Design

Thailand is now approaching an aging society. In 2014, World Bank states that there are 10% of Thai population whose age is above 65-year-old. Furthermore, in 2040, the number will increase to 25% of Thai population. Therefore, there is a need to define a housing for those aging society. In addition, there is increasing numbers of retired group from various countries such as European countries, Japan, etc. However, they are usually living outside the city where they live among the green surrounding and peaceful life. Therefore, it is interesting to search for an aging hub for the aging society. However, with the conditions of density and land price in Bangkok, the idea of renovating of an existing building for serving this program is possible for SMEs. There are a lot of shophouses which can be renovated to serve a new use. Thus, the studio raise a question of what and how we can design new programs and renovate existing shophouse to serve the new needs. This studio offers an opportunity for architecture students to question of what an aging society housing should be for the near future and respond to the future living trends.

Arena Design

The 3rd year Architecture program, SoA+D, KMUTT project is about designing a "Community Sport and Recreation Center" for a local community as well as a general public area for the outsider who visits the area, and there are many recent debates and developments that support the opening up of Bangkok’s riverfront for public spaces. Site location has been selected from the area which many old communities had been evacuated so the city could have the land for new developments since lots of space has been left behind. Khlong San is one of a very famous districts in Bangkok, According to an information about urban planing there are about 50 administrative districts in Bangkok. Khlong was located on Krung Thon Buri area which active as an old town along with an old tradition or culture which still exist within a communities In the past, Klong San is formerly known as a “Banglumpoo sub-district” which later on, King Rama VI please to convince it name which had been change into Klongsan dustrict since 1916.

At the site there are surrounded by residentials and temple which the site has an advantages of attracting people in this district to attend the site’s design project. as the landmarks and facilities of this district are far from the site. As the result, this site can be the new attraction point of Khlong San district.

12

SITE ANALYSIS

• Hot/warm season from March to June average temperature with 38’C. • Rainy season from July to October. • Winter season between November and February 25’C.

SUN PATH The sun shines on building site more than road side of the site which make south side adjacent building gain heat and light more than other sides and penetrate diagonally into the building with more angle specially during winter time.

WIND PATH Wind flows in 2 direction From southwest during hot and rainy season from Northeast during winter season. Ventilation as and landscape design intergration, design should considered wind direction to be able to achieved outdoor and indoor spatial design.

Site Location: Khlong San District

As Bangkok holds claim to being the hottest city in the world, expect daytime temperatures to be in excess of 30 degrees centigrade throughout the year. Bangkok weather may not be the warmest inthe world every day but, overall, it is unrelenting simply because it doesn’t cool significantly at night. The two periods April to May and September to October are the steamiest, characterised by high humidity. The southwest monsoons arrive between May and October are bronging unsettled, cloudy condition and for many, this is a welcome respite.

13

The weather in Bangkok is dominated by a tropical monsoon climate including three main seasons as followed;

Design Integration

“How to link people and what can be ues to represent the diffinition of linking?

15

A design development, according to my study, I found out that the weaving is very interesting in term of action. The weave is to bring something crossing another and/or passing through others.

The sepcial thing is the angle of those thread acting on each other. When it is a 3-factor weaving (has 3 direction of thread coming through), the angle will always be 60 degree which is the main concern in this design.

After analysis of design developmet, the topic to care about is the local existing neigborhood. The design should not interfere how local live everady but should be an alternative or a choice to choose to make life easier.

STRENGTH - The flood can’t be reach a flood wall-barrier which gave an opportunities for people around to live without fear. - The current situation of the water level is not that urgent, with the support from concrete wall and water gate can contain alots amount of water. - In term of environmental and sustainable design, around 70% of a site have a green space influence throgh it which make a very strong potential and opportunities which the people around this site can used.

WEAKNESS - Lack of access to the site, just only one convenient through site which is the main road side can access. - There is a corners which abandoned and full of poisonous animals, Moreover, there a lots of the old evidence about the old wooden factory which left tons of useless materials which pretty ruin a site.

OPPORTUNUTIES - Create connection between site and communities. - Improve waste space in the site., create liked an accesibility between each communities. - The river promenade is a key of attraction, so redisigning it is good for a better site’s propaganda.

THREATS - The wall in the site at the riverfront prevent site approach. - Waste space cause criminals and drugs. - Local gangster control this area. - The site is next to main road which has massive of air and noise pollution.

Community Cultural and Contemporary Art Center MUSEUM Design

Aspiring to be the city of culture -as initiated by the BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration), our city has been a host to various cultural events such as La FĂŞte (French Cultural Festival), Bangkok Design Festival, Bangkok International Film Festival, International Festival of Dance and Music,Goethe -Institute Science Film festival, etc. For the second project of this semester, you are asked to design a Community Cultural and Contemporary Art Center with supporting programs indicated in the program requirements. The site is situated on the edge of Chao Phraya River on the Thonburi side below the Rama VIII Bridge. You should imagine the Community Cultural and Contemporary Art Center as one of the growing venues serving Bangkokians as well as tourists, the prevalent mode of transportation to the site from Ratanakosin Island is a ferry from Tha Prahahtit pier near Khao in Banglamphu area. The design proposal must accommodate a variety of activities such as art and design exhibition, community activities, performance both by local and international artists, screening of independent and foreign films, etc. The Center should be able to draw visitors, both Thai and tourists, on a regular basis. The restaurant and other commercial spaces must be able to attract people by capitalizing on the view from the river edge. The existing King Rama VIII statue and portion of the park are to be remained.

SITE LOCATION

23

Thailand, Bangkok, Bang Yi Khan, Rama Viii Park.

Rama VIII Park The site is located on the riverside of Chao Pha Ya river, the main river of Thailand. Beside of the site is the Rama 8 bridge that give the nice and stuning viwe to the park. This area is in Bang Yi Khan district in Bangkok Thialand.

Sun Orientation Sun direction a bit tilts to the south which means this location will receive sunlight all year. The shading may be required.

Wind Direction Thailand has two seasonal wind. One is summer wind (Southwest), carries humid air. Another one is winter wind (Northeast), brings cold and dry air.

Rain Precipitation In case of humid air and moderate winds of Bangkok, Thailand, raining is mostly occurring during mid of May until October.

TRANSPORTATION

TOUR BUS There are many tour group come to Rama 8 bridge for take photo so they park the bus on the road around the site.

MOTORBIKE TAXI As many part of Bangkok, you can find a lot of motorbike taxi around the site.

CAR Many of them come to the park by car, because it has a road privided to the park directly.

BOAT There is a small pier at the riveside so you can travel by boat to the park.

WALK Many pedestal has provided for people to come to the park and they can walk across the river by the bridge also.

24

SITE CLIMATE

Design Concept

On the north side of the site, the beneath-bridge zone always has activities happened, becoming an active space with a lively atmosphere. But in the opposite side, the south direction, the silence and quiet space located as a Wat Dao community, a big residential area. Not only these two directions but also on the east and west, the density of residential and another architecture structure located on the west is obviously congested. The stuffy houses and crowded population shown. Compared to another side, in the east direction, there is only a wide clear opening perspective of the river which gives a critical feeling of freely relaxing perception.

Congestion Community

Bang Yi Khan District contains a lot of community inside and around the area mixed up together such as Wat Dao and Ai Sawan. So the quality of life of people is quite low and has more drugs problems.

Riverside

The riverside place is give the nice view from river and Rama 8 bridge, also this place get some moist from the river and noise from river transportation.

25

Based on the development process of conceptual mpdels, the design is mainly about an architecture that becomes the center of social context which is one of the key solutions to bring communities to meet each other. The design of linkage interpretation is come up and become a representative of the heart of the city. The concept is to design a building which can give a feeling of transitioning. The building can translates as the way of combining each characteristics of the nearby location.

On the Western aera of the site, it is a large community area which carry various of residential environments. The density of substance is one thing to concern and use to compare with opposite area.

South direction of the site is located as residential area whcih required lots of privacy and peacefulness

Area that has been assumed to be the min entrance of the site and the one that is located under the bridge which is on the North direction are very lively and active. Activitie have been occured all day and night.

Highway Road

Beside the site is located the main road connect with the Rama 8 bridge across the river that make the site get stunningviwe of superstructure. In the other hand, with no gab area, this place get noist and polution directly from the road.

Roray land

Most of the land around this area is land of the capital so some of them be expropriated for build the park of King Rama8 and Music School of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana. So They have no landscape planing for the community.

The East side of the site is next to the river which is provided widely open perspective with clean atmosphere, obviousely different from an opposite side that have a crowded residential evironment.

New Design for Local Market

This site belongs to Mr. Traiphop Limpraphat. This famous TV moderator has an idea of creating the market for this place. “In my opinion, Market is a kind of “exhibition”, it just different from other exhibition because it open everydays” he said. - It was one of my plan since I succeed “krao khun toi”. About a style which i want to see in my Market; I heared about a word “green space”. I love to mix a Market with trees. - “I want my Market to be somekind of a center which “connect” with people around this area, some kind of place which can give an advantages to other too”.

PLAN DEVELOPMENT

Second attempt on simplifying the plan and separate each boot equally.

Starting with first draft of plan.

Applying the modules along those line in order to create the form for the market. The placement method is done by putting the top point of module .

The initial state mezzanine floor which will be the part of the roof is then created.

Simplify the roof in coordination with the mezzanine and then add the void in order to let the light goes in. (The red lines represent the mezzanine)

Inserting the pathway with appropriate width into the plan .

Simplify the plan to make it more user freindly and create the selling boot according to the creases (the red lines represent stairs)

34

Continue with roof plan following the creases outline.

Draw the pathways using space syntax which link each zone together based on Thai people behavior that do not want to walk too much.

Trace the line in order to create the shape of the main plan form, following the creases of the module and the drafted plan.

The last state is to create the mezzanine’s roof. Here is the first dratf of it.

Disposal zone The disposal is placed here for easy access of the cleaning as a truck can continue on collecting the other in the village.

Plan arrangement

All of the zones are placed in the front so that customers can perceive all of them when driving in.

37

Making this place to become the exhibition center, not to exhibit something, but the architecture itself is the exhibited art piece. The banana folding culture is chosen for exhibiting art as it is the old culture that has been inherited since the past.

PROJECT STATEMENT

3

Thailand has continually suffered from great floods caused by large amount of rain which cannot be drained out in time. Moreover, the Southern part especially the ones which are closed to Andaman Sea were suffered from Indian Ocean Tsunami in the past.

Up

1

These disasters caused shortage of food and shelter for people who got hit by them. Therefore, our objective of this village is to protect local people and tourists from these natural disasters. In order to escape the flood while still having accessible help from the volunteers, our village design will rise above the ground with a large supporting pillar.

2

3

The pillar is designed to be an oval shape standing perpendicularly to the water flow to reduce the impact from the Tsunami. As for the unit, each one of them can contain up to 4 individuals. Moreover, they are attached to the pulley systems allowing them to be movable. Therefore, these units are placed along the ground waiting for the people to come inside, when they are filled, they will be lifted up to the top. This design will reduce the time to get inside the village since each person can immediately get in their units and then go up straight. Each unit are connected to the main center which has gathering spot, medical center and sanitary facilities for them. The village has 2 floors, the lower part contains the units and main center, while the upper part contains refectory, space for the volunteers, warehouse, helicopter landing for transporting needed stuffs. This village will be placed in risk areas which have Tsunami and great flood in the Southern part of Thailand.

The Future Living Spaces

AXONOMETRIC

Stone roof tile

Nowadays, China is facing many major social problems. One of these serious things is “overpopulation. This factor has a big passive impact on the future physical environment, social network, and technology. With FLEXEED, the future living spaces project, it can be one of the solutions as being a way of living space for the future to solve those problems.

Roof

The project is designed as a simple modular form that can be flexibly changed based on human need. Users can easily relocate a building in the future even it has been settled down once. This architecture is also designed to be able to provide our users to gain more housing spaces for their future family members in the same area. People can meet each other easily by using the skywalk provided on the second floor connected to the mezzanine. This function is aimed to enhance the sustainability of human living. At the ground floor, each building has their own green spaces which can be redesigned for good environments. In the area, there is a public space located along the houses for users to get closer to each other. This method can also improve the physical environment. All buildings have standard functions: living room, kitchen, toilet, and bedroom. The living room was set in the center with double height designed which located next to the central green space mentioned above. The bedroom was set on the mezzanine, so the user can get more privacy and the rest of the day from this point.

SITE INFORMATION Urban design is an practice focuses on “Making creative city for people. The International Exchange Workshop of Architecture and Urban

Kashiwa City Layers

Design pursues visions of architecture and urban design for Asian cities. Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan (SIT)joins King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand (KMUTT) Tokyo 2018 July, following 2015 and 2017, and Bangkok 2016 and 2018 expected, along with Seoul 2012 and Tokyo 2014 with Chung-ang University, Korea (CAU) and Johor Bahru 2015 and Tokyo 2016 with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The both students collaborate an eight-day project on Kashiwa City, built up around the railway station as a satellite town populated 400,000 commuting 30 km and 30 minutes from Tokyo. The urban design center supports the workshop.

DESIGN CONCEPT The site sits between a block of small buildings on the left and large buildings on the right. Therefore, the concept is to adjust the building size to match with the cityscape to create a flow of skyline and connection to surrounding. The building volume is separated into many smaller volumes similar to the surrounding buildings. Moreover, the heights of each volume also adjusted according to the buildings located beside them.
