Welcome Just in case there was any doubt about it - Deeping Cares! A Facebook group was set up by Anne Smart of Deeping St James who had seen on the internet that some hospitals needed knitted hats, cardigans and blankets for premature babies. Always ready with the needles, Anne knitted some hats and, using an egg for size comparison, posted a photo on a local Facebook site asking if anyone would like to join her. That was on a Friday and by Sunday she had received 37 offers of help! The only way to deal with this was to start a dedicated Facebook Group so people could keep in touch. Deeping Cares was born. It now has 47 members! The Group has contacted the Prem Units at Peterborough City Hospital and Addenbrookes to find out exactly what they need. A system has been set up with people willing to knit, donate yarn, and collect and deliver finished articles. Any surplus items will be posted to a contact in Lancashire to her group that supplies three hospitals. Nothing will be wasted. Nicola Joy has now taken on the running of the group in liaison with Anne. If anyone is interested in helping with this project please contact Nicola Joy on 7771363568 or email nikki8918@hotmail.com Indeed proof if proof were needed - Deeping Cares! 3

MP John Hayes bought his son Edward to Deeping St James where he turned the first turf in the long running campaign to rebuild the Signal Box. Component parts of the Box are in storage and during the course of this year the Signal Box will be re-erected just 100 yards from its previous location. A New Book

Arthur Galton, Vicar of Edenham by Margaret McKay

Image:Ashley Baxter

Hey I’m in Vancouver but of course you know where I’d rather be ....

Margaret McKay is the daughter of Joyce and Arthur Holmes who featured in The Imperial Cafe article in our February issue. After living and working for many years in Sweden, Margaret has returned to her native heath (Market Deeping) where she has brought to completion a project begun some 20 years ago. Arthur, Margaret relates, had some intriguing anecdotes to tell about the vicar of his native village, Edenham. In particular there was the one about “the vicar with the pistol” and the one about the Sunday morning visits to the village of Lawrence of Arabia on his motor bike! After many, many years, Margaret decided she simply had to find out what lay behind these mysterious goings on in a tiny, tranquil Lincolnshire village, and in particular who was this pistol-brandishing vicar and what strange odyssey could have led him to spending the last two decades of his life in this out of the way neck of the woods. The outcome of her quest tells the fascinating story of the child of an eminent and wealthy scientific family (Francis Galton was Arthur’s second cousin), who, despite a promising start in life, carved out an unconventional, zigzag path for himself, encompassing religious conversions, a five year sojourn in Australia and a circle of friends and acquaintances which ranged from Matthew Arnold, Oscar Wilde, Laurence Binyon, W.B.Yeats, to thrice Prime Minister, William Gladstone and the modernist American poet, Ezra Pound – who once spent a weekend in Edenham! The quest for Arthur Galton certainly was a journey worth the taking, says Margaret. Available from Callow’s in the Market Place, Market Deeping, at £9.50, also from Edenham Regional House (the Vicarage), Edenham. Email enquiries: mmspostbox@gmail.com

The annual rotation of Lent lunches, organised by Churches Together in the Deepings, have seen another successful season of Saturday soup supping. We were deep in snow for the annual show from Deep in Friends, but the Priory Church Hall was packed for a great performance from a highly talented cast.

Robert Stanton:

FEATURE

It was one hundred years ago this month that the Zeebrugge Raid took place. On 23rd April 1918 an attempt by the Royal Navy was made to block the port of Bruges-Zeebrugge used by the German Navy as a base for U-boats, a threat to Allied shipping in the English Channel, by sinking older boats scuttled there for this purpose. The attack was led by HMS Vindictive, an old cruiser refitted for the purpose, with two old submarines, filled with explosives to blow up the viaduct connecting the concrete mole (built in 1907 to shelter the harbour from the sea) to the shore. Vindictive was to land 200 marines, all of whom had volunteered for this hazardous service, at the entrance to the Bruges Canal to destroy the German gun position. The signal for attack from Admiral Keyes was ‘St George for England’ and the reply from HMS Vindictive was ‘May we give the dragon’s tail a damned good twisting.’ Vindictive went alongside the Mole in a smokescreen, and as this suddenly cleared the Germans were faced with a hostile ship looming out of the smoke at pointblank range. The Germans put up star shells and penetrated the ship’s side below the upper deck, the senior officers of the storming parties taking the full blast. The landing party set off, ‘Over you go Royals!’ The objective of sinking the block ships, albeit some say in the wrong place, was achieved but not without heavy losses estimated at 24 Germans but 384 Brits were wounded and 188 lost. A letter written home to his parents at The Park, Market Deeping (now the Library) by the youngest serving officer at 18 years of age, Sub-Lieutenant F. Rowland Wade RNVR, two days after the battle, records the full horror of the events. ‘I can’t put into words what we went through on Monday night – we had to anchor 300 yards off the Mole at Zeebrugge, a practically hopeless job to keep off attacks upon the Vindictive, Iris and Daffodil, the firing was terrific, every conceivable type of missile was used against us; there were four ML’s in our division, we were bang in a searchlight for eight minutes, and the fire was terrible, the ML on our side was sunk, and the one on our port side was absolutely disabled, but we got her home, and, thanks be to God, not a soul on our boat was hit; I was standing by our gun and was thrown down twice by the impact of the 17 inch shells, of which there was a veritable hail, I can’t imagine how they missed us, the searchlights and star shells lit the place up like day, but the star shells put up by the ML’s was splendid and they did what was intended, they arked the place up.’ continued >

Lieutenant Robert Stanton, also of Market Deeping, was less fortunate. Surgeon-Commander McCutcheon RN wrote, ‘Stanton was unconscious due to a dangerous wound of the skull, and his servant, severely wounded in the right arm and scalp, had his arm around his master’s neck and shoulders. He informed me he was alright himself but that Mr Stanton was pretty bad and he was trying to keep the heat in him. The incident to my mind typical of the loyalty and affection existing to such a great extent in the Royal Marine Corps between officers and men.’ Robert Stanton was born in 1896, the oldest son of local Doctor and his wife Annie, brought up in her family home in Church Street later Stamford Rd, Market Deeping. He boarded at Barton School, Wisbech St Peter, and later went to Cambridge University where he trained in the Officer Training Corps. He had been appointed to a commission with the Royal Marines Light Infantry in 1915, served in Greece and the Dardanelles, and was posted to the 4th Marine Battalion in February 1918. Rowland Wade (pictured right) records ‘I have just been along with Dr and Mrs Stanton to see poor old Bob, he is lying badly wounded in hospital here, I do hope he will pull through, he is hit in the head and still unconscious; he was one of the storming party on the Vindictive, a hero’s job, it was rather wonderful, we two being in the same street.’ ‘You can’t imagine how glad I am that the business is over, we have had it on our minds since March, when we volunteered for the job and truthfully, I did not expect to get off unscathed like we did. Several of the boats got badly shot up, Hunt’s among them, he is quite alright. We are now hoping for action leave, I 18

think we deserve it. I am absolutely alright, except that I feel a little shaken, but that is only natural after all that.’ Lieutenant R.G.O. Stanton RMLI was not to be so lucky and he died in Dover five days after the raid. The Grantham Journal recorded ‘Reference was made to the sad event at morning service at Market Deeping Church by Canon Ashby and the hymn ’On Resurrection Morning’ was sung with feeling by the choir.’ A large concourse of people lined the street from the Market Place to the cemetery and the Church was filled for the Funeral, the congregation including in Marine Uniform, Private R Vincent, for two years servant to Lieutenant Stanton. The ViceAdmiral Sir Roger Keys sent a wreath of red roses, ‘In proud and grateful memory of a very gallant officer who died on St George’s Day.’ Research: Liz Parkinson and William Wade Words: Judy Stevens Pictures: William Wade

Bryan Herd

A family in farming When the wind howls across the fens from the east it reaches the farms on Stowgate before the rest of the Deepings. In order to retain the rich topsoil that is so good for growing crops Bryan Herd explains it is now being mixed with the clay from under to prevent the Fen Blow, which can prove so costly to production and potentially dangerous too! So when there was a need for land to feed returning servicemen who had survived the ravages of the First World War it was logical that Lincolnshire County Council should make 30 farms available on their 1200 acres of arable land at Stowgate. But during the depression of the 1930s several Walter Herd farmers here went bankrupt and it wasn’t easy to re-let the farms. Several amalgamated. Bryan Herd’s grandfather, Walter, from Holbeach Fen had become a tenant of one of the farms in 1927, retiring in 1950 when his son Arthur took over the tenancy until 1975. It was then that it was turned over to Bryan and more land was added to the farm as it became available. The land extends to Crowland Common in the east and to Cranmore railway crossing and Deeping St James in the west, so covers three parishes. When it was time for Bryan to go to school he went to the Deeping St James’ schools as Crowland was considered too far for the school bus. The bus collected children from the different farms as it wound its way around towards the Infants School in what is now the Scout Hut in Church Street, and later to the Cross School. Bryan 20

formed lifetime friendships sitting on that bus, one with Ken Philips who he sat next to and whose father was the Station Master at James Deeping. He would spend many happy hours at the Signal Box playing darts and running down the stairs to open the gates. At the age of 14 Bryan went up to the Spalding Gleed School for his final year. Later he worked with his father on the farm and helped others as well as there was not enough work on one farm. During the winter months he would work with Ron Allen delivering coal. But as there was more land so there was more work and Bryan was called on more. Shopping was done at Cross’s Shop on Church Street where everything could be bought from paraffin to nails. After Bryan passed his driving test he would drive his mother up to do the weekly shopping which was then delivered by van. It was on one of these trips that he met Janet from Wilsthorpe, who he later married.

Arthur Herd

Aerial view of the farm 1964 In the early days Bryan remembers that work was very labour intensive. Hoeing and singling sugar beet used to take six weeks during May and June but gradually precision drilling negated the need for this. Potatoes were harvested by ‘gangs’ of women who came down from Deeping to do the job; now sugar beet and potatoes are harvested by machine. Instead of taking the beet for processing at Peterborough the beet is taken to Wissington near Downham Market by a contractor. Corn was cut with a binder and made into stooks which were then carted and stacked in the yard until the threshing machine came, owned by Frank Clow. Then the job would necessitate the help of anything from 8-10 men. As the ears of corn were thrashed out the remaining straw was kept for livestock in stacks. Meanwhile the grain was taken away in sacks on the back of the lorry, the seeds left on the ground providing food for the birds! Before 1946, when tractors were introduced on the farm, two heavy horses were employed to do all the jobs. Other livestock was mainly represented by pigs on the Herd’s farm. They were kept in a selection of wooden sheds and sties, the sows were kept for breeding and the ‘weeners’ were sold at eight weeks old at the Spalding Auction. Their feed was ground at the electric mill at the back of Oldhams Bakery next to Cross’s shop by Reg Oldham in what is now the

PROFILE

Janet, Bryan and James Herd Old Bakery. A variety of breeds were kept on the farm: Landrace, Large White and Welsh but the favourite was Zowie the Tamworth. Still fondly remembered! Having attended Holbeach College on day release, James, Bryan’s son, now farms the land which is now all arable, with his father. Wheat, cereals, sugar beet, oil seed rape, linseed, peas, beans and potatoes are all grown. There are now four larger farms at Stowgate; as well as the Herd’s: Pearces and Johnsons which are arable, and Dean Hallam has some cattle as well as arable land. There is no longer a gatekeeper living in the cottage at the side of the railway crossing to keep any strangers out, but the community is nonetheless strong with street parties to celebrate national occasions and a real unity to fight the scourge of the hare coursers. In the past the hare coursers brought men to flush out the hares but now they come with 4x4s with no respect for the land or those living off

it. Years ago all the Stowgate farmers would go up to The Rose at Frognall on Sunday and Bryan has fond memories of landlords Bob Scunthorpe and Margaret Moyle and of all the fundraising that went on with the Thorn Club The nature of the land has changed over the years Bryan muses. There are now DEFRA schemes to encourage tree planting and to leave strips for wild flowers and now it is less usual to find bog oaks under the soil that had been blown down by the tempests of a previous age, destroying the forests that had once stood tall on this land. There are big skies and dramatic sunsets and now buzzards, kestrels and red kite soar overhead. There are crows and herons that roost at Deeping Lakes and it is not unusual to see crows chasing the bigger raptors away from their nests, says Bryan.

The skies above Stowgate were alive with activity during the Second World War; on one notable occasion an American bomber came down at Crowland Common, passing over the farmhouse on fire, and the family evacuated in alarm! The crew all bailed out but the pilot, thinking that the little white farmhouses that constitute Stowgate were a village, went down with the plane . There was a real fear that the Germans would invade here, and poles were erected to prevent them from landing. Bryan’s father became an ARP warden and was dramatically fired on by a German pilot, jumping in the dyke to avoid the bullets! Things have calmed down since those times but the pace of life is still dictated by the weather and the relative remoteness of life on the farm. But the Herd family would not have it any other way! 21

Keeping Deeping fit

SPIN ROOM

Si Fox tells it like it is at The Spin Room classes with 22 people. This isn’t luck; far from it. Last summer, Claire made the decision to knock through all the office space to make one big room. In here, she installed a Functional Fitness Rig. This huge apparatus has everything you need on it to work every muscle group; from punch-bags to monkey bars; from rings to weights. From a layperson’s point of view though (mine), it’s FUN! And that’s what keeps drawing people back there. I don’t want to exercise myself into a coma brought on by monotony, and it seems neither does the rest of Deeping.

Want to look glam whilst you work out? Want to gaze adoringly at your physique in the mirror, or chat idly to friends whilst pretending that you’re ‘going for the burn’? Well, as Dionne Warwick once sang, ‘Walk on by’ the Spinroom Studios at the bottom end of Spalding Road. Preening is left at the door as the instructors put you through your paces in classes from between 30 and 60 minutes. Claire Cross started getting Deeping fit in 2013 at the Leisure Centre, hosting seven spin classes a week, with twelve bikes. Hugely popular, this was her home for two years until 2015, when she moved into an industrial unit on Peacock Square. With more room, she could now add Body Pump, Circuit Training, Kettle Bells and Step to her portfolio. You’d think this would have satisfied her, but no. Six months later she upped sticks and moved to the current home of the Spinroom Studios. It’s testament to her popularity that her regulars and friends keep following her about! Her enthusiasm is infectious as she thinks of new ideas, and it’s hard not to be enveloped in the community spirit which thrives there. I’ve only know Claire and the Spinrooms since 2016. I initially joined to do Spin, but since then I’ve tried Pump and Circuits as well, both with some success. It’s the Circuit Training that has really taken off, though. From a few people every Wednesday, this has now grown to three fully-booked weekly

Classes can be booked online using an App, or if there’s space you can just turn up and pay. Once you’re a member, though, you have access to all the equipment as long as it’s not being used during a class. Fancy a quick 5k on the treadmill after work? Go for it. Want to live out your Donkey Kong fantasy on the Monkey Bars? Who’s going to judge you?! And should you need a bit of loosening up, David, her husband, runs DC Sport Massage from there. He’ll even come to your house if that’s easier for you. As I said at the beginning, it’s a community. We’re not members, we’re friends, and like all good friends, we’re here to help you achieve whatever goals you have your mind set on. Call Claire on 01778 218181 or 07850 304120 for further details, or look online.

COLLECTORS CABINETS

Multi- coloured 24-drawer unit Hollies Attic Room, Market Deeping Antiques & Craft Centre

Cabinets of Curiosity

with Emma Shearman-Smith

A group of fine 18th and 19thc antique collectors cabinets that open to reveal multiple rows of drawers, perfect for storing and displaying antique medals, coins, flowers, or shells

As far back as the Phoenicians we have been collecting artefacts and curios from previous eras; it is part of human nature. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, collecting was popularised with the expansion of invention, scientific development and the British Empire. All kinds of people became caught up in the collecting obsessions of the period: birds, books, Napoleonic relics, botanical specimens, Egyptiana, curiosities and fossils. With the rise of these collections came the need for cabinets to display them to friends and family, showing knowledge and wealth in the same way as driving a car or wearing jewellery is today. continued >

COLLECTORS CABINETS

C1900 Antique mahogany marquetry inlaid serpentine fronted collectors display collectors cabinet

Beautiful cabinets were made for every conceivable collection, from small, beautiful inlaid table-top chests to elaborate floorstanding cabinets with many miniature drawers and shelves, lavishly painted or lacquered to the trends of the day. What about the modern collector? There are many collectors still out there passionately adding to their interest, but how do you display your treasures in the 21st-century house? Currently houses are more minimalistic when compared to those of our predecessors, so what is out there for us that will fit in with our modern lives and homes? A visit to any antique fair, emporium or flea market will offer a vast array of choice. You will find display cabinets from every era for every budget, whether it be a reproduction or a stunning rare Baroque 17th-century Swiss ‘Cabinet of Curiosity’, or simply a vintage treen box to keep in your drawer. Emma Shearman-Smith is an antiques dealer.

HILLS DEPARTMENT STORE

Hills – putting the therapy back into retail Hills is the type of store that you come across in London’s West End with the look that draws you in, the aroma that envelops you and the ambiance that makes you feel special! It is a retail theatre – a snapshot of current trends in fashion, design, household goods and gadgets, only ten miles away from Deeping and run by the same family for three generations. The reputation of Sheddy Turner’s Fish and Chip restaurant has spread far and wide; indeed, the family can trace their lineage back to 1833 when an ancestor was a harbour master with a pub in Double Street. But not everybody knows that it was Freddy Turner who also was the founder of Hills Department Store as it is today. The original shop had been Lacey & Garrett, a draper’s shop and one of seven shops in Crowland, Spalding and Grantham. This store, at 20 Market Place, had fallen into the hands of a man named Bradshaw who had managed the shop prior to the retirement of the owners. In 1959, Bradshaw was keen to offload the store and Fred Turner saw an opportunity for his two teenage children, David and Elizabeth, to run the business. He was able to acquire the shop for a song and after the two siblings returned from Leeds where they had gone to learn the business – David

in Busbeys in Bradford and Elizabeth in Robinsons of Leeds – they returned to run the shop in Spalding. So David, aged just 18, found himself Managing Director of this store with its arcade at the front, large showcase in the centre and a long lease to the National Westminster Bank. Looking back as what now seems an insurmountable task for one so young, David comments: ‘I just ploughed on. If anyone asked me something I didn’t know I would tell them I would get back to them, to give me a bit of thinking time!’ And thinking was what David did a lot of. When he saw inflation soar to 25% during the 60s, he made the decision to buy his own premises as a hedge against inflation. When Boultons Garage came up for sale, (now the Ivy Wall) he snapped it up. In the wrong place, but perfect for the Kettering Tyre Co who had their eye on the Greyhound Hotel in the centre of town next to the Civic Centre. With his eye to the main chance David pulled off a deal which gave the tyre company the space they needed and it gave him a prime slot in the centre of town for his new store. continued >

HILLS DEPARTMENT STORE Not one for spending money he didn’t have, David built the property in two halves, operating from the old premises as well. When the new building was extended in 1985 the large cantilever windows in the restaurant at the back of the premises overlooking the river were inspired by some that David had seen while at a wedding in Brussels. A long-time friend of Adrian Isaacs of Oldrids in Boston, David was advised to join the buying group the Association of Independent Stores (AIS). At first the store was considered too small to join but David was not to be deterred. Using all his hastily acquired knowledge he had the soft furnishings department fitted out for free by Coloroll. Gradually improving the store and enlisting the skills of those who had successfully refurbished stores elsewhere, he was soon accepted into AIS and quickly learnt that the secret of success is to keep developing the store, recreating a multi-dimensional theatre of retail that flies in the face of the internet! The staircase has been moved to the centre of the store in the last major refurbishment in 2005. In a market that never stands still and where flexibility Is key, the

team have fought hard to secure an enviable array of brands in the beauty hall which now includes Lancome, Estee Lauder, Clarins, Chanel and just last year Clinique. The store aims at the top of the market and all their departments – cosmetics & toiletries, ladies and gents fashion, lingerie, footwear, homeware, electricals, gifts and cookshop – operate on a less is more philosophy where choices are made to offer the customer the best of shopping experiences, putting the therapy back into retail! The family still retains a hands-on approach; David has largely handed over the reins of the business to daughters Emma Allmand and Katie Freeman and General Manager, Nick Snookes, but still makes almost daily visits to the store. ‘When I come in I am straight in the restaurant to have a cup of coffee and chat with the customers - the office can wait til later!’ David learnt young that the customer is king! In adopting this philosophy he has seen off competition over the years from Beryl’s, Penningtons and Hansons, Elsewhere in Spalding, Hills Furniture is run by sister Elizabeth and her sons: Edward and Richard, in a family dynasty that looks set for full steam ahead for the future! The Water Taxi to Springfields runs daily from the back of Hills from 1st April - 1st October 10-5.00pm weekdays - a perfect opportunity to have a browse and a coffee at Hills and then take in the sights and sounds of the riverbank!

DRIFTWOOD

Ladies who lunch! In fact anyone who lunches has now got a shiny new venue in which to sample some of the best food in the area! Exciting news for the Deepings was that Driftwood opened its doors at the beginning of the year and is already providing the opportunity for accomplished local Chef, Rob Johnson to push back the boundaries and serve up ever more delicious dishes, offering the flavours and tastes that are not easily found locally! Rob earned his spurs as a Junior Pastry Chef at the Royal Duchy Hotel in Falmouth. With 4 Stars and 2 AA Rosettes this is one of the finest luxury hotels in Cornwall but as with many of the best chefs, Rob honed his skills on his travels. For Rob this took him to France, Switzerland and Austria, where he cooked with some of the most skilled chefs in the world. More recently he has been delighting locals here in the Deepings with his creations while Head Chef at the Waterton Arms. With the opportunity to open his own restaurant in Manor Way Gardens, he quickly elicited the help of local family members including Brian Forman of BNF Services to transform the shop into a restaurant redolent of his childhood home in Cornwall. Light and airy, the ambiance is of casual elegance – you can almost hear the gentle lapping of the waves and the squawking of the seagulls soaring overhead! Now as well as opening in the evening (Wednesday-Saturday and for Sunday lunch) there is a mouth-watering selection of sandwiches

and other light lunches. However, responding to popular demand for a slightly more substantial lunchtime offer, Rob is now also bringing the fine dining experience to the middle of the day and it is possible to choose from a set lunch menu. Decorated with micro herbs, the chicken liver parfait which was served to me when I ate at the Bistro recently bore the markings of the leaves in which it had been meticulously wrapped and unfolded from, worthy of any of the Michelin Star restaurants in the capital. David Pearson tucked into the tomato soup, rich with roasted tomatoes and peppers, perfect to stave off the winter cold! Flavoursome smoked cod loin was presented attractively on a bed of lightly curried puy lentils with a curried coconut puree. Gentle on the palette and tongue but with distinctive flavours to long live in the memory! Rob is fastidious in selecting from the best quality local food available and so menus are changed weekly and reflect the availability and the season. As a result menus are only announced the day before the restaurant opens and can be found on Facebook. Soon Rob will be adding a monthly Saturday breakfast to his repertoire. As yet unheralded, it is sure to be a culinary experience second to none! 37

Callows Tobacconist & Confectioner Since the 1970s Callows of the Market Place, Market Deeping has been a tobacconist and confectioners, selling quarters of your favourite sweets in little white paper bags with ears twisted at either end. Wine gums, sherbet lemons, rhubarb and custard, sherbet pips, ABC letters, chocolate raisins, Merry Maid Toffees, jelly beans and babies and Millions are all best sellers. Then there are novelty packs of liquorice and boxes of chocolates, always something new to discover! Since Dick Callow’s retirement earlier this year Penny Avison has been running the barbers shop, carrying on a century old tradition on this site and upstairs it is possible to source vinyl records and some of the most iconic album covers of all time! While next door is award winning jewellery shop, Murano.

J.F Inkleys Step into Inkleys Man’s shop wedged into a corner of The Crescent, Spalding and be prepared to step back into an age when personal service was king. For nearly 60 years Inkleys has been providing carefully sourced brands to customers who quickly become friends. Such an impact did Fosters of Peterborough have on 5 year old Jim Inkley that he resolved to have a similar shop of his own! He bought the present shop from Hector David whose bags still line the beautifully preserved Pollards Quick Serving fixtures. Men’s clothing has become much more casual over the years and this is reflected in the offer where Mayer trousers are best sellers but the time honoured quality offered by Peter England shirts, gloves from Dents and Gurteen trousers are still offered by Jim’s son, Andrew. Inkleys is a member of the exclusive Independent Mensware Consortium ensuring access to the top brands at negotiated prices. There is still a chair waiting for customers, a clock that chimes upstairs and Andrew and wife Heather ready with a warm welcome. J.F Inkleys The Man’s Shop, The Crescent, Spalding 01775 722239

5 great traditional

shops

Bridge Hardware

Old Bakery

In the historic heart of Crowland right against the old three arched bridge you will find a hardware shop that dates back to 1730 when it was a blacksmith’s. In the 1840’s it became an ironmongers and in 1898 a hardware shop. It was in the hands of the same family GG Williams until 1961 when it was taken over by the Bugnalls. Jeff and Tracey have had the shop for the last six years, bringing with them 20 years of experience in the trade. As you open the door the aroma of a traditional hardware shop envelops you and then the sights and sounds offered by a cornucopia of stock which extends from haberdashery to homewares from light bulbs to patio cleaner, wood working tools and timber to bird food. There is a house key-cutting service, a friendly smile and helpful advice, all bringing dimensions simply not available on the worldwide web! Bridge Hardware, 1, East St Crowland 01733 210259. Open 8-5.00pm M-F 8 0 4.00pm Sat 38

Bundled up against the weather locals still make their way to the Old Bakery in Deeping St James as they have for over 150 years. The Alfred Hunt ovens set into white Victorian brick tiles are still in daily use, they remained in the bakery when extensive renovation was done in the 1930’s. The house next door was built for one of the Oldham brothers who ran the bakery for part of the 19th and much of the 20th century. Tradition is very much the order of the day; there are no premixes here! The bread is served from a dresser carved by a local cabinet maker and gallery of paintings that Clive the baker has sourced line the walls. Christmas would not be Christmas without a snowman meringue nor Easter without a hot cross bun from the Old Bakery DSJ - supplying deliciousness down the years! Church St. Deeping St James
