Welcome
On a mission to capture the spirit of Christmas in one photograph, nine fearless local mothers and their gorgeous youngsters joined together on a recent chilly morning in Frognall. Tea towels and tinsel at the ready, it was all hands on deck, as we bedecked our toddlers and preschoolers in the finest homemade nativity costumes, whilst convincing them that standing in a barn full of hay with a group of strangers watching them was a fun thing to do on a Monday morning! You will notice from our lone wise woman, that not all could be convinced. However, with a flurry of shepherds (joined by a real-life lamb, no less), our miniature Mary and Joseph were surrounded by a host of angels, and gently placed the baby Jesus in the manger. Is it the perfect photo? Perhaps not, but I think it perfectly captures what Christmas is all about – reflecting on the birth of Christ, the joy and innocence of children, and the gathering of friends and family. To me, this photo also serves as a reminder that life doesn’t always go to plan; it doesn’t always look like you had pictured it – but that is actually what makes it so wonderful. Zoë Kornfeld 3

When Gypsy insistently woke Pam in the early hours of the morning she prevented her owner from going into a life threatening hypo - brought about when the blood sugar level in a diabetic goes dangerously low. It is thought that Gypsy could have smelt the ketones produced when the body does not get enough glucose.

Come, Come and have a drink or two, down at the Old Pad & Can! ‘When introduced to the lady, she declares that everything is “clean and comfortable” especially the window-curtains, whose colour cannot be seen for the dust; and the bed-room which was fumigated by the last lodger with tobacco smoke. On inquiring the terms, they are said to be “dirt cheap”, which, judging from the state of the tables and carpet, they ought to be.’ Such was the description of a Victorian lodging house in an 1842 edition of Punch magazine. The Deeping St James equivalent was situated at the top of Bridge Street just where the High Street divides into the Horsegate. It was built on to the public house ‘The Masons Arms’, at first owned by Thomas Henry Sharpe who had inherited his business from his father, also Thomas, in 1837; his estate ran to 16 pubs and the brewery in the Market Place at Market Deeping. The site was the focus of much activity, not always good, at the time! Picture the scene: a German oompah band colourfully costumed in lederhosen and Tyrolean hats had visited Deeping in May 1878 as they toured the country making a living from playing Strauss waltzes, polkas and other popular dance music of the day. They had stopped at the Masons Arms and were fuelled with ale and bonhomie. As the band left, two of them, including Joseph Schneider, remained. The bucolic scene soon turned ugly as Joseph staggered over to George Williams, a lodger, taunting him by playing with his food. When George protested Joseph knocked him to the ground and stabbed him three times in the head. The alarm was raised by licensee Sylvester Merriweather, and PC Gunn was called. With the help of Harry Pridmore, Gunn tried to eject Schneider from the premises. In the scuffle the PC received an inch-long cut to his forehead. Happily both injured men recovered but Joseph was sentenced to two months’ hard labour. Only a year before the pub had been the scene of a tragedy when Sylvester’s adopted 33-year-old daughter, Ellen, had been walking to and from the river to wash the mop she was using to clean the kitchen floor. While bending over the river she had an epileptic fit and was carried downstream. Her body, along with the mop, was retrieved at High Locks. The inquest, 14
held at the Crown & Anchor before F.T. Selby, Deputy Coroner, issued a verdict of death by drowning. Petty theft, punch-ups and near-miss disasters were inevitable as sometimes as many as 17 people converged on the lodging house. Susan Pridmore served 21 days in prison for stealing a pair of scissors from fellow lodger Eliza Thoroughgood in 1876. The building itself was nearly razed to the ground in 1872 when one of the lodgers went to bed at 9.30 leaving his burning candle near the open thatched roof. The prompt arrival of the Fire Engine from Deeping St James averted sure disaster, since all of the surrounding properties were old thatched cottages and buildings. In 1835 the local press carried the disturbing story of a common beggar who ate a hearty breakfast at the pub and then took a child, claiming it to be her own, returning with it dead in the evening. The woman was given a coffin by the Parish Officers which she took to the Priory Church and waited for the clergyman for over an hour when it was found that he had not been informed. An unseemly brawl ensued between the Manager of the Poor and the Clerk of the Parish, each blaming the other for this neglect. This was broken up by parishioners who took the body to the workhouse at the Cross and the child was buried on the following day. The road outside the Masons Arms was dark, narrow and muddy and people avoided the pub and lodging house at night, known locally as The Pad & Can – later just The Can. When a disastrous fire destroyed the row of cottages opposite in 1903 the site was cleared and widened. In 1912
FEATURE
when a new landlord, Charles Pettit, advertised the Masons Arms in national directories as having excellent lodgings at moderate prices he might have been telling a half-truth, because in 1915 the Bourne Sanitary Committee proposed that the pub and lodgings be closed due to outbreaks of Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria. Mr Peacock from Soames Brewery (its latest owner having been Marstons in 1850) responded with the submission of plans for alterations to the buildings. On their completion the business was reopened with William Pick from Bourne as the licensee closely followed by William Parker in the early 1920s.
There was no let up in the need for the lodging house in the 1920s though, as men returning from the front line in France pounded the streets looking for work or suffered from what would today be known as post-traumatic stress disorder and could not settle in Civvie Street. Often suffering from injuries, rough and frightening, their coats tied with string, a night in the Can (equidistant from Spalding and Bourne workhouses) would be considered a luxury in comparison with the humiliation suffered in the casual ward at the workhouse where the down and outs were forced to suffer in return for a place to sleep and meagre rations of food.

FEATURE The fights and the thefts showed no signs of abating; in 1922 a farm labourer from Cowbit was robbed of his overcoat and money. In October 1927 at closing time there was a fracas in the street and a resident of the Can, crippled John Percival, was hit on the head with a pint bottle of beer, suffering a deep gash on his face. Percival was taken to Dr Braithwaite’s at Market Deeping and then driven to Peterborough Infirmary by Mr Carvath who was visiting at the time. Farm workers of Mr Cook of Deeping Fen, John Owen, Martin McGowan, Luke Hurst and Martin Roark were arrested and held on remand but their boss spoke up for them saying that they were good workers under normal conditions but became excitable at times! Mr Parker was still the licensee in 1930 when the Masons Arms was the scene of a robbery one afternoon when it was closed. When his daughter went upstairs to get changed she found that her bedroom door had been forced open and was hanging on its side. Boxes and drawers had been wrenched out and their contents strewn on the floor, the cash box lying in the corner of the room, its contents of about £40 in notes and silver missing as was a child’s money box containing threepenny bits. In December 1932 the licence was taken over by James and Elizabeth Shinkins with their five children and elderly widowed father, John. In 1939 the register records six general labourers and a feeder of a threshing machine, Henry Fuller, residing at the premises. At this time the tap room on the right of the front door catered for workmen but now there was also a saloon bar for more select customers. The living quarters behind were comfortable for the family and the lodging house offered a haven for men and women of the road. There were two beds in the women’s quarters and 15 in the man’s dormitory, and the cost of a night’s stay was nine pence. The facilities in the common living room had improved but there was no bathroom and the premises were still candlelit. In 1944 Elizabeth Shinkins died, leaving her husband and three daughters, Mrs Joan Heritage, Doreen and Angela and two sons Norman and Charlie,
the latter serving in the army and later as a popular local bus driver. Attending Charlie’s wife, Frances at her confinement, Nurse Aldridge had a lucky escape when her apron caught alight in the candle flame. The baby, Brian Shinkins, survived the incident and still lives in Deeping St James. Centenarian Nancy Titman remembers there being regular residents of the lodging house as well as vagrants, one of whom was Lily, a petite ladylike figure with a definite air of superiority which was belied by her peculiar, none too clean garments fastened with pins. Her hat was lavishly decorated with brooches, little ribbons, bows and buckles. She was very eccentric and harmlessly anti-social but every day would travel by bus to Peterborough where she acquired a supply of mats, brushes and small household goods which she sold from door to door. Nancy fondly named her the Duchess of Matz. After the Second World War the pub closed and was auctioned, the purchaser removing the upper storey and the thatch and converting the ground floor into a neat bungalow known as Coots Cottage.

How can you tell me you’re lonely and say for you that the sun don’t shine? Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets … I’ll show you something that will make you change your mind.” Ralph McTell The books and films issued in the name of the Streetcat named Bob and his owner James Bowen are testimony to the pull on the heartstrings the homeless have on those of us tucked up in our warm and cosy homes, especially at this time of year. And today the Peterborough Soup Kitchen (PSK) van that pulls up - at the moment in the Brook Street Car Park - Bright Street being closed while Queensgate undergoes refurbishment - not only is replete with tureens of freshly made soup and sandwiches, but also dog food for those whose only companion in the harsh world is their canine friend. The Peterborough Soup Kitchen came about in the years of the rapid growth of the city 36 years ago following a two-year project to feed the homeless. At first the kitchen was sited at various venues in the city: at St Theresa’s, Westgate Church and at the Salvation Army. The service gradually developed into one where a specially converted van was used and now serves food at 7.30pm six days a week – Monday to Friday, and on Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm. Saturday is not included in the roster as others groups provide the function. The dishes served vary according to the time of the year and on wet and cold nights the addition of potatoes and pasta to the soup provides welcome sustenance. There are around 180 volunteers in all – 24 teams of four who work once or twice a month. St Guthlac’s Church provides twelve volunteers in all and the three teams from the Church provide the service monthly. St Guthlac’s team have a ‘cake fairy’ who every month bakes wonderful fruit cakes; all PSK 18
are asked to do is visit the PSK box in church every month and mysteriously there are cakes!! It was as a member of the Church that Kevin Dawson became involved 15 years ago. Then when he retired as Churchwarden nine years ago, he was asked and became one of six Trustees to run the charity. Trustees meet five times a year, each member contributing a different element to the skill set. Kevin is responsible for the marketing, social media, giving talks to groups and schools and building partnerships with businesses. Others provide food handling training for volunteers, administration, logistics and, of course, there is a treasurer.
Safer off the Streets is a government initiative with the aim of reducing rough sleeping – currently there are known to be 30 rough sleepers in Peterborough. The organisation carefully co-ordinates the help on offer from 19 groups, including PSK, which deliver different kinds of care to the homeless. The Soup Kitchen does what is says on the tin – to satisfy the need for every individual to have food. This is done in an entirely non-judgemental way and it was this that appealed to Kevin when he first became involved. Now the group works with others, such as the Light Project, to distribute toiletries and Christmas shoe boxes; alone they are unable to carry large stocks as the fitted kitchen that they rent in Lincoln Road is now £2,000 pa to rent and short on space! Any food which is donated and is not able to be used is passed on to other agencies such as the Salvation Army, local food banks and a local refuge for women. Partnerships with companies, such as Pret a Manger and BGL, sometimes offer benefits in kind, money or in volunteer help where staff members are offered volunteer time by their companies. This opportunity has seen the development of baking days, where a group get together and bake enough cakes for a week. In total the Kitchen needs £36,000 a year to survive, usually made up of benefits in kind with the lion’s share being monetary donations. In 2018 the soup kitchen was feeding 44 per session and this year the number looks to have risen to 50. If children are seen by the volunteers at the serving van, Social Services are made aware to offer additional support and services to the family. Younger people tend to be a more transient group – travelling through

on their way to London, working their way down the country from town to town. In the spring there is typically an influx of those who work for gang masters on the land. The elderly, who are more likely to live in a hostel, are a more stable group but typically a client will use the soup kitchen for a couple of years before moving on. It is sad to hear of clients rough sleeping and there are those who require the service as they
live in multi-occupancy properties with limited or poor facilities. Christmas Day is a day of rest for the Soup Kitchen as others step in to open Church Halls to provide day-long care for the homeless, the Kitchen helping to facilitate this with the provision of food and offers of help.
“People don’t forget we have helped them,” confides Kevin “when their circumstances change they will often contribute to help those coming along behind. Over the years I know a word of encouragement meted out with a ladle of warming soup has helped to turn a life or two around. If we can do this while providing food to those in desperate need of it – then I consider it to be a job well done.”

Christmas at Molecey In 1969 Cambridgeshire Life magazine visited Molecey House and Mill, then the home of John and Lucille van Geest. Touring the house, “Life” found a dining room filled with ‘antique Sheraton furniture, olive green walls and antique gold curtains.’ 50 years later in 2019, I’d Rather be in Deeping took a tour and found a room restored to the same period style by current owners Glenn and Graham and already decked out for a fabulous festive Christmas. Christmas tree kindly provided by Nunton Farm sales of trees and turkeys now on.

MEET THE MAKER
Brewed in Deeping!
Not only is Nigel Wright a one-man award winning brewer, but he is also a bit of a wordsmith as well! He first came across the word Hopshackle while watching Call My Bluff. Unsure of its origin he found that it is linked to the verb ‘to hobble’ – dray horses were ‘hobbled’ to regulate their stride and to prevent too much of the beer they were carrying from being lost. Nigel stored the word away in his memory banks thinking it would be the perfect name for a brewery if ever he were to realise his dream and have one of his own.
Mostly supplying pubs in a 20-mile radius, Nigel responds to the need for something different by rotating his 30 beers all the time. He started with only three but has increased the number to satisfy his customers’ demand for something different. The work is full-time and the brewing cycle is seven days – he brews on a Tuesday and sees the beer in a cask on the following Tuesday. With accolades from none other than Roger Protz, arguably the world’s most renowned expert, the bottled beers Restoration, Imperial Russian Stout and Double Momentum all get a full page each in 300 More Beers To Try Before You Die.
And so it came to be! Having met his wife, Val, at university where they had both studied Applied Biology, the two then pursued separate careers. Nigel initially worked at St Bart’s Hospital, and later at McCains, and then they both worked for the same hygiene company. When Val landed a Directorship with the company, Nigel took on the role of house husband, grabbed the opportunity to take a course in brewing at Sunderland University and then started his own brewery. There are still parents in Deeping who can remember sampling his early attempts!
With names like Humopulus (derived from the Latin name for hop), Hopnosis and Resination it is clear that this brewer has a close relationship with his brews (and his wordsmithery), claiming that an essential ingredient to creating a popular brew is a good palette and the ability to approach the brewing process scientifically. While flavour and taste is a keen part of the process at Hopshackle, the more zany brews that have been introduced elsewhere in Europe, such as Pizza Beer, have been eschewed in favour of more conventional and sustainable flavours.
In November 2006, having found a unit (originally a British Gypsum building) tucked away in the corner of the Northfields Industrial Estate, brewing commenced. At first it seemed too big but over the years the brewery has grown to fill all the available space. Now the office walls are covered in awards gleaned from beer festivals up and down the country.
To complete your totally local Christmas lunch table or celebrate the New Year you may want to add a bottle or two of Hopshackle , so please contact Nigel on 01778 348542 or sales@hopshacklebrewery.co.uk

All you need for a truly local Christmas Dinner! It turns out that the rich black land found in Stowgate, Deeping St James, is perfect for the cultivation of Picasso potatoes – and they are a variety that are ideal for mash, for roast and for jackets! So they are the go-to variety for your Christmas dinner and to create bubble & squeak with on Boxing Day. W. A Pearce & Sons farm at Stowgate and deliver their potatoes around the Deepings on Thursday evenings and they sell from Crowland Caravans on the Postland Road, Crowland on Saturdays, and on Sunday on the A15 lay-by just out of Deeping towards Langtoft from 10-4. Buy a sack and they will keep for a couple of months over the winter – ideal to call on for a jacket potato lunch in the new year, with no trip to the supermarket necessary! Eat out at the Bull and the Goat over Christmas and you will be sampling the variety, as they are supplied to local eateries across the district! Stop! Leave the nondescript jar of cranberry sauce on the supermarket shelf! Instead take a visit to Swines Meadow Farm Nursery where you will be introduced to a whole new world of flavours to accompany the Christmas lunch; try beetroot and blackberry vinegar chutney, quince or medlar jelly, cranberry chutney or redcurrant jelly to accompany the main meal and a whole selection of chutneys and jellies for the cold meat later! All made from locally grown produce. But be quick - stocks are already running low. Just £2.50 for an 8oz jar.
FOOD
The piece de resistance of a Christmas dinner is of course the turkey. The traditional bronze turkey is the original, a slower growing bird which builds up a layer of fat ensuring that the meat is moist when cooked. The birds supplied by Kings Lynn supplier Ben Human to Grasmere are all free range. These local butchers also prepare the popular three bird roast; turkey, chicken and duck. Place your orders now and join in the camaraderie of the queue to collect on Christmas Eve!
Christmas simply would not be Christmas without everyone’s favourite - Pigs in Blankets! And where better to get them than from Deeping’s own butcher in residence at Market Gate, Market Deeping. Streaky Bacon wrapped round Grasmere’s own speciality - Cocktail Lincolnshire Sausages make the best Pig’s in Blankets a truly moreish addition to any festive table.
This must be the year you go organic with the Christmas veg! There is always an interesting display at Vine House Farm shop. Like them or loathe them Brussels Sprouts always seem better when bought on a stalk – they are also sold loose in the shop. Savoy cabbage, kale, cauliflower, carrots and the crowning glory– honey roasted parsnips using honey produced in Deeping St James – can be found in the shop. Two heavyweights in the potato department are also available from the Farm: Tyson, a white all-rounder, and Mozart, a red all rounder – and while you are there, pick up some gifts for your foodie friends!
Looking for an alternative to turkey? Then sample Moor Farm Shop’s Christmas dinner alternative. It is their own home grown, free range, extensively grazed, grass fed, well hung, beautiful beef. They offer the full range from expertly rolled, tender Sirloin, French trimmed Rib on the Bone up to 5 ribs, with paper frills, and as far as a slow cooked piece of tasty rolled brisket. They can even make you their own Beef Wellington! Their home grown free range lamb is another alternative, and you can choose from a leg of lamb to a delicious rolled shoulder, or a French trimmed rack of lamb with cutlet frills to finish it off. They can advise on size and weight to suit any family gathering. All animals are grazed in Newborough or on land at Deeping Gate.
