Welcome Fifteen competitors from the Market Deeping Tang Soo Do Club entered the European Championships held in Rotterdam last year and returned with a haul of 39 medals between them. Thirteen of the competitors are going on to North Carolina USA in July to complete in the World Championships! There were 500 competitors from across Europe at Rotterdam as well as the USA, Canada and the Seychelles. NEWS When Charlie Bird saw all the fundraising efforts for Children in Need he was determined to do something himself and so decided to brave the shave! Michael Stykal Brix Saville from Headkase did the job at the Rugby Club and Charlie raised over ÂŁ620.
The Deepings School held a pre-Christmas get-together for members of the community involved with the School over the past year.
Teams of walkers set off to make a record of the character of the area as part of the Neighbourhood Plan to enable future building to reflect the best of what is here.
Following their successful buzzer competition held at Deepings Beer Festival, Oakwood Financial Services donated 50 trees each to the Town and Parish Councils. A working party under the guidance of Steve Fisk met in Jubilee Park to plant a hedge and saplings there and further trees have been planted around the village.
This year the Library had a visit from Father Christmas who entertained children along with Mrs Chrismas who read stories and elves who supervised Christmas craft activities.
This year the Langtoft Players staged Aladdin as their Christmas Panto, an up to date production of the traditional favourite by Lincolnshire based writer Kei Bailey. 7

As part of a major fund raising project to raise £70,000 for the repair of the organ, St Guthlac’s Church held a sponsored Carol Sing where those sponsored sang 100 verses of well known Christmas Carols. Especially for this fund Jill Gibb has come out of Quiz retirement and created one of her excellent quiz sheets entitled ‘British Seaside Places’ and available at £1.50 per sheet from Jill in church or by calling at 3 Church Street, Deeping St. James. The Bishop of Grantham, the Rt Revd Dr Nicholas Chamberlain visited William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School as part of a day of celebration marking 50 years since the school opened its doors. Executive headteacher Fiona Griffiths said: “It was a wonderful day. We invited guests from each decade the school has been open to say a few words of their memories to the children. The children listened to songs from each of the decades and they very much enjoyed that.”

Pretty Quirky Event and Wedding Hire has opened a new unit at Langtoft Industrial Estate.
The new £135,000 Skate Park at Woody Heights DSJ was opened by Chairman of the Parish Council, Andrew Bowell. Competitions were organised for the many teenagers present by Craig Woolley of Castillo Skate Boarding and Samuel Thorne, owner of Terminal 1 indoor Skate Park at Melton Mowbray. Funding for the Park came from grants from DSJ United Charities, SKDC, Lincs County Council Big Society Fund and not-for-profit organisation Wren. Sam Youngs who organised a non-uniform day at Deepings School was present as was Tom Hutchins, 16 who said “I wanted to put as much time as I could into the project and this is now our part of DSJ.”

NEWS ‘Fresh Ayre’ entertained at the Priory Church with tunes that related to each figure in the Nativity set as they were taken down from the loft and metaphorically dusted off for the Festive season. A magical afternoon!
In the lead up to Christmas over 50 senior citizens were welcomed into the Deepings School to enjoy afternoon tea prepared by the school’s catering team. A talented food tech team and students also made a delicious selection of mince pies and gingerbread biscuits for the raffle. Guests were greeted by some of the schools Year 11 College & Charity Captains who helped the event run smoothly.

Mum, Amy Bricknell recently held a raffle to raise funds for the Champs appeal supporting families who have children with Hirschprung disease. This rare bowel disease only effects 1 in 5000 babies of which Amy’s own son Harvey is one. FEATURE
The fortunes of Welby House and those that lived there had fallen from the heady days of William Laxton and John Perkins in the latter half of the 18th and early 19th centuries. However, things were looking up when Frederick Gibbons moved up to Langtoft from Bromley in Kent where he was born in 1869. He was the son of Thomas, a stone mason, but became an agricultural machinist, marrying Annie Maria Franks in Langtoft in 1898. The couple went on to have three children: Thomas, Walter Franks and Constance Elizabeth. Sometime around 1920 the family moved into Welby House to allow for the expansion of their now thriving business. They needed the office, the granary and maltings, the workshops, the forge, garages for the lorries, a petrol pump and a meadow where seven sets of threshing tackle were kept. Evidence of the activity of the business can be gleaned from the court records. In 1915 Frederick had been summoned by Supt. Bailey for using a vehicle drawn by a locomotive without the tare weight on the vehicle. Frederick informed the court that he was using a light dray as a tender for the coal and wire for the hay pressing which he was carrying out under government contract. The Bench dismissed the case but reminded him to paint on the tare weight in the future. In June 1921, before Judge Moore Cann, Samuel Dacis, a labourer of Market Deeping, made an application to F.B. Gibbons, hay and straw merchant, under the Workmen’s Compensation Act. Mr H. Kelham of Bourne gave information of the incapacity of the applicant and Gibbons inspected the award and ratified the agreement to pay 35 shillings weekly during his incapacity. Before the start of World War II there were 35-40 employees coming and going in a fleet of lorries, taking corn out from the granary, and at harvest time the threshing tackle was used in farms all over the area. On a Friday the men would all queue up for their wages which Frederick would dole out sitting behind his huge roll-top desk. Margaret Webster, granddaughter of Frederick, remembered ‘My brother and I each received 6d (old money) in a pay packet and were the last to receive our wages. We had small jobs to do according to our age and capabilities. The 6d did become a shilling after the War.’ The firm was back in court again in 1938 when Eric Woolerton of Market Deeping was summoned for using a lorry and trailer not covered by insurance and F.B. continued >

FEATURE Gibbons was charged for permitting the offence. Woolerton had been seen by Inspector Maddison driving a lorry drawing a chaff cutter, and the insurance certificate did not cover a trailer. Mr Gibbons said that he thought that the firm had a policy covering all agricultural implements and Mr E.W Roythorne of Spalding, defending, pleaded not guilty. The solicitor successfully argued that a trailer was used to convey people or goods and the bench dismissed the case saying that no way could a chaff cutter be classed as a trailer. In 1939 a lorry sheet marked with the owner’s name was lost between Fosdyke and King’s Lynn, Gibbons offered a reward for its safe return. Later that year Mr Asplin of Halfleet, one of the firm’s lorry drivers, swerved to avoid a pedestrian in Boston and damaged the shop blind of Weaver to Wearer Ltd in Bargate. Fortunately there was no damage to the lorry or to the driver. Frederick and his wife played an active part in the community. Frederick became Chairman of the Bowling Club in 1920 and then held various posts as secretary and treasurer. In 1927 he became president of the Billiards Club and was a also a member of the Quoit team. In 1922 he was elected and became a member of Bourne Rural Council representing Market Deeping. Annie was a member of the Ladies Guild. In 1922 a very successful fete was held in the gardens of Welby House and £90 was raised for Peterborough Infirmary. Granddaughter Margaret Webster has fond memories of the garden, ‘It was my constant delight to which I was able to invite my friends, there were so many nooks and crannies. My first memories were long before school days and then I had to play in the side garden; dolly’s tea parties etc. Very regimented annual flower beds and stone containers with weeping plants. It was my place to ponder and meditate, to dream my dreams, where I kissed my first boyfriend and my last – my husband.

I was very sad to lose it – it has helped me with many a decision in times of trouble. My husband Tom and I had our wedding reception in a Marquee on the tennis court, the crab apple trees were in bloom and the Marquee was decorated with apple blossom and although during the war the garden had become neglected it was still my favourite place.’ Both sons, Thomas and Walter, were employed in the business and took it over when Frederick died in September 1941. He left the family his effects of nearly £7,000. He left Welby House and all its contents to his wife and daughter, and the rest of his estate was divided between the two boys with a stipulation to pay their mother and sister £2 a week each. Annie died on 9th July 1953 leaving £1,620 to her daughter. Constance remained single and spent all her remaining days in Welby House. She enjoyed whist drives, especially those that supported the British Legion. This was a favourite charity of hers and each year she would collect for the poppy appeal until her death in December 1972 when she left effects of £26,287. After Connie’s death Welby House, the Granary and adjacent land was unused, as the Gibbons were now quarrying for sand and gravel elsewhere. John Gibbons approached local businessman, Roger Smith, to see if he would be interested in the purchase of the land. Of course he was, but the planning permission necessary for Market Deeping Building Co to build was protracted and in the end the company bought without the necessary permission. risk for the company but eventually permission was given for housing Roger having abandoned his idea to build a super retail store. The company, under the day-to-day control of John Thorpe, had to overcome many hidden problems on the site before it was made suitable to build. Julia Smith much admired Warrenne Keep in Stamford and recommended that Wolverhampton-based architect Peter McAlster be engaged here. The new two-bedroomed houses on what became Dixons Road had to meld with the existing offices, the Granary and Welby House. Each house, as in Warrenne Keep, had a parking space, McAlister insisted that this would be enough here. The first five houses fronting Godsey Lane were started but it soon became apparent that garages were a must and so the whole site was redesigned to accommodate this. This took time to get through planning, MDBC saw a reduction in the amount of properties to be built and they had to let a brilliant team of sub-contractors go. As the site progressed the company standard to build homes that they would live in themselves was recognised by the NHBC and the site won many ‘Pride in the Job’ Awards. Perhaps the biggest challenge was to convert the Grade 2 listed Granary into flats. All of the existing materials inside each flat had to be removed to enable the ceiling height of each floor to be raised. The original Granary had four floors which were made into three. Special 20
permission was needed to alter a few of the mullioned windows to fit in with the new design. However, all the trials and tribulations proved worthwhile when the NHBC awarded MDBC with a certificate declaring it the ‘Best conversion over nine counties’. It was while work was progressing on the conversion of The Granary that Roz Hughes, married to former Head of PE at The Deepings School, and then joint Director, with husband and daughter, Lisa Marie, of the event supply business, Running Imp, noticed through the open doorway that scaffolding bars were lying on the floor in the hallway. John Thorpe of Market Deeping Building Company had seemingly lost interest in the conversion of the house into two flats since the ground across the road could not be used as a parking area. A deal was struck, as long as it included the garden and the rest is history! The house is now home to Roz, Dick and deerhound, Balmoral.

Dorothea Price an archivist by nature The first thing that you noticed about Dorothea was that her hair was always neatly in place, that she wore a discreet necklace that she would occasionally touch as she spoke and, in the days where ladies wearing trousers are common, she always wore a dress above the knee, natural tights and neat court shoes. She was not one to push herself forward to grab the headlines or to want to have a picture taken but she was passionate about her home village of Deeping St James and she collected old photographs and neatly cut out newspaper snippets from when she was a child, at first encouraged by her mother. No surprise at all that she was a founder member of Deepings Heritage and that she published a string of titles both on her own and with her group of like-minded ladies who formed the Deepings Local History Group. She was also a key figure in the Festival of Parish Maps and of the Celebration of Courtship and Marriage held at the Priory Church Hall where hers was one of the wedding dresses displayed, with flowers from the period provided by the Deepings Flower Club. When the Open Gardens were staged, her husband Alf ’s pride and joy came into its own. Meticulously cared for, the small patch with its pond and espaliered shrubs, was declared one of the favourites of the weekend. Dorothea was the daughter of William and Sarah Panton (née Patchett), born in 1926 and with a long line of Deeping St James ancestors dating back to the 1600s. As a child she attended the Cross School and harboured an ambition to be 22
a nurse but having had rheumatic fever as a child this was not an avenue which was open to her. Instead she became a clerk at Fletton Brick Works and then during the war she was transferred to Perkins Engines to help with the war effort. She met Alf, her lifelong soul mate, when he sang in the Priory Church choir as a boy and they married in 1947 after his war service with the paratroopers in India. After their marriage they lived at the Hollies in Horsegate with Alf ’s parents until they were able to purchase what is now 18 and 20 Eastgate. These had previously been three cottages. Firstly they lived at number 18, knocking two cottages into one, while Dorothea’s parents lived next door. Dorothea and Alf had a daughter, Elizabeth, who in turn had two children, Matthew and Sarah, of whom Dorothea was very proud and she would always have a story of their prowess at school and later at university. Matthew had an ambition to be a pilot and he now works for the Ministry of Defence with a son, Lucas. Countryside Publications published one of Dorothea’s books, a glossy publication with 60 pages and over 90 of her pictures in their ‘Times Past’ series. On the cover is a photograph of the Cross and a white cottage, for many years the home of Mr and Mrs Charles Gaskin, Dorothea’s uncle and aunt. The Welland ran at the bottom of Dorothea’s garden and her love of the wildlife and the river was well known. It inspired two picture books charting the source of the river to the Wash where it reaches the sea. A further seven books
were published with the Local History Group – Nancy Titman, Cicely Tribe and Joy Baxter – and another six were published in her own name. Just after the turn of the century she, helped by the Local History Group, staged an exhibition at the Priory Church Hall with more than 1,000 photographs taken during the 20th century. People flocked to see images of a past rural life in the Deepings of the days of potato picking and of people actively engaged with the harvest. Each of her book launches was heralded with a coffee morning at the Priory Church and people would travel from far and wide to return to their home patch and exchange reminiscences. Dorothea was a fount of local knowledge and was happy to pass on the information as the First World War Exhibition was compiled at the Deepings Community Centre in 2014. She was also generous with her time and archive material when Joy Baxter was researching features for this magazine. It was only a fortnight before she passed away on 29 October 2017 that Nancy Titman and I shared a cup of tea and a digestive biscuit carefully proffered from a 1930’s wooden biscuit barrel that she would keep on a shelf by the fireplace. We were chatting about the Deepings in the Second World War and the reminiscences have contributed to a future feature on the Imperial Café. Dorothea Price was a quiet, understated gentle lady of a previous time and I will miss her very much.

I used to be fat and unfit. I was amazing at it; I’d truly found my niche in life. But when I decided that I couldn’t possibly be any better at it, I had a look round for some help. The Deepings are amazing for those who want lose the effects of that Christmas dinner, or who just want to stay healthy. There is a huge array of activities on your very doorstep. I’ve tried body-pump, spin, circuits, cycling (to Devon – have I mentioned that?), running and help from personal trainers. We have two excellent gyms where you can find tailored workouts, should you need them, and the Spin Room, which is the place that’s rebuilding me. You literally have no excuse. And the best thing? Lamb, red currant and carrot cobbler by Judith @ Moor Farm Shop Ingredients 700g diced shoulder of English lamb 6 large carrots peeled and cut into 6 pieces. 1 large onion chopped finely 2 leeks chopped finely 1 tbsp red currant jelly 2 tsp crushed garlic 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 850ml water 1 tbsp dried/fresh Rosemary
For the cobbler 225g SR flour 50g English chilled butter 120ml full fat milk 2 English eggs 2 tbsp dried Rosemary 50g strong English grated Cheddar
Method 1 Heat the oil and toss the lamb in until brown 2 Add the chopped vegetables and fry for 5 mins. 3 Then stir in the water, redcurrant jelly and dried Rosemary 4 Put into the oven in a covered dish at 180’C/gas 6 for 1 hour. 5 Make the cobbler by rubbing the butter into the flour to form breadcrumbs. 6 Stir in the Rosemary and cheese 7 Make a well in the centre and pour in

DEEPING LAKES
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Reserve
If you visit the Deeping Lakes Reserve you will find natural habitat abounding with a huge range of plants, animals and birds in every season of the year. It is difficult to believe that large parts of the reserve only came into existence in 2003. The site has a long history of human habitation and industrial development. Archaeological excavations showed that humans were living on the site and farming from as early as the Bronze Age. Farming probably continued until the second half of the 19th century when the new railways brought rapid change to the site. Over 100 men were employed, with a small settlement, stables, a blacksmith and a carpenter. In 1848 a brick works was built for the railway and over 2 million bricks were produced there. Ballast for the Great Northern Railway Company’s lines began to be extracted from a pit to the north of the current railway line in 1870, creating the ‘The Mere’ and later the area known as ‘The Lake’. By the end of the 19th century the railway was completed and the owner of the Mere, seeing a business opportunity, stocked the Mere with fish. With a railway station nearby he was able to attract shooting and fishing parties from London and for a while it flourished as a popular leisure attraction. Meanwhile the pit known as ‘The Lake’ Pochard was left to nature and its edges began to silt up, reeds appeared along with trees and scrub. Wildlife was reclaiming an industrial site all by itself.
establish an agreed plan for what would happen after the extraction ended. The decision was to create a nature reserve which would complement the existing lakes, woods, scrub and reed beds of the SSSI. This was made possible by English Nature, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Aggregated Sustainability Fund and the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. The LWT was also able to purchase ‘The Lake’ in 2003 and so this time the area did not just have to wait for Nature to restore it.
In the 1950s and 1960s the Wildfowl Trust ran a bird ringing trap on the island. Birds were ringed and then released. A pochard duck was shot in Russia in 1968, 8400 miles from Deeping where it had been ringed! Botanists found plants such as early Marsh Orchid on the site. In three quarters of a century Nature had done such a good job of transforming the area, that it was decided to protect it by law and so in 1986 the area covered by the Mere and The Lake became a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Fundamentally this was because of the large heronry, the diversity of wintering ducks along with the unusual inland breeding site for cormorants at the time.
When the LWT and its volunteers began work the new lakes were very bare places and therefore attractive to relatively few species. Many native trees and shrubs were planted to create small woodland areas and thick hedges. Grassland areas were encouraged and sheep were introduced, as their grazing helps to stop grassland turning quickly into scrubland. Some lakes have been left to become reed beds, important for many birds, other lakes have been kept clear for ducks and geese. Over the years the site has been managed to create a good range of habitats as you can see as you walk around the very well maintained pathways. Left continued >

In the 1990s the high demand for sand and gravel for the construction industry meant land to the south was again used for aggregate extraction. However this time the firms had to 31
DEEPING LAKES to its own devices a natural process called succession would eventually mean that the lakes would silt up, become scrub land and eventually return to the natural vegetation of this area and its climate: mixed deciduous woodland.
Top spots to look out for birds. If you look north from the carpark you will see a brick building in the grassland. This is a nesting site for sand martins that arrive in spring having spent the winter in Africa. They nest in sandy banks and feed on insects over the lakes and surrounding farmland. These natural sites are now few and so the Trust has created an artificial sand martin bank. If you look to your left you will see a large pool. Most of the year you can see little grebes diving under the water to feed and before coming up again with cork-like buoyancy. Leave the carpark and walk back along the track you drove down until you reach the East Pit Lake. The islands in the lake, that you can view from the blinds, have been deliberately created to make good places for wading birds, gulls and terns to nest in the spring and early summer. You may be able to hear the cacophony of sound created as the gulls and terns constantly fight to retain their space and stop their chicks becoming food for a bigger bird. Further back you can usually see a variety of ducks and geese feeding on the water all year round. Turn back on yourself, go past the carpark to the end of the track, turn right over the bridge and follow the path beside a small paddock. As there are feeders in this area you are likely to see small birds like the blue tits and chaffinches. In late summer you may see Siskin

Marsh Harrier dragonflies on the fence rails basking in the warm sun. Following the path you will see the West Pit with a small viewing hide from which, in the spring, you can look at the rafts placed here to help the terns rear their chicks. The perspex sides are to stop predators, like otters, getting on the raft. You can see the terns fly in with small fishes caught on the lakes or the river. Now the path turns into a grassy walkway with thick bushes on either side. In spring this a great place to listen for warblers that have flown in from the continent to breed here. ChiffChaff These are small birds which move quickly but their songs generally call your attention. The easiest to identify by its call is the chiffchaff because that is exactly what it says. One of our most stunning birds is the bullfinch. The vibrant red breast of the male may be seen in the top of the hedges all year. As you reach the end of this track go into the main hide to view The Lake. Ducks and geese build up in large numbers here in the winter and if the weather turns very cold it may be the only open water available. The island in front of you has nesting cormorants for most of the spring and summer. The noise which the large chicks produce when they see their parents returning with fish is amazing. This stimulates the adults to begin to regurgitate food which the chicks get by putting their heads into their parent’s throats. In recent winters the
rare long eared owl has roosted during the day on the island in the thick bushes. Follow the path along the edge of the lake. Most of the year you may hear family feeding parties of long tailed tits; lovely pink, black and grey birds with long tails. They constantly call to each as they move along the path above you. Eventually your route takes you away from the lake and into the woodland. It is hard to believe that this was planted in 2003. In the spring this is another good area to listen to migrant warblers like the blackcap. In winter you may be lucky enough to see a charm of goldfinch feeding on the alders and there may even be a rarer redpoll or siskin amongst them. Turning left along the bank you will get good views of both the huge reed bed and excellent views of the river. In spring and summer, look out for marsh harriers hunting over the reed bed. In winter you may see large numbers of mute swan feeding together on the river. Eventually you will find yourself back on the path to the car park. Why not visit the site where you can wonder at the ability of nature (with a little help from people) to turn industrial areas back to a beautiful landscape full of wildlife. The Deepings Lions
DEEPING LIONS
Motto: We serve We all know The Lions from the sound of the Xmas songs emitting from their sleigh in December when their arrival to many of us heralds the approach of Christmas, but what do we really know about these “Lions “ The Deepings Lions were formed or ‘chartered’ in 1980 when a group of local men decided to form a Lions Club in the Deepings as part of the wider Lions International Group, which was founded in 1917 in Chicago USA, as a nonpolitical or religious group but an organisation whose aims were and still are to promote civic, cultural, social and moral welfare in the local community. There are now over 46,000 local Lions clubs in the world with more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries of which The Deepings Lions is one.
The first President of Deepings Lions was a Mr L Perry who was President in 1980-81, followed by Mr T Cheesman in 81-82, who quickly, with a dozen other members, began to raise money by holding events such as an amateur boxing night at Deeping Leisure Centre, sponsored swimming events that ran for over ten years at the Leisure Centre and,
of course, the annual Duck race and Santa and his Sleigh, which are still helping to race funds for local charities and worthy causes to this day. In the following years Deepings Lions held what was known as the Teddy Bears Picnic on John Eve field , an event we know better today as the Deeping Carnival, a free event held on the first weekend in July. In those early days up to 30 decorated floats paraded through the streets of Deeping St James and Market Deeping to the field with bands and dance troupes following on. Today the Lions are trying each year to make the Parade a bigger and better event (despite the issues of
health and safety) and hope that local businesses will become more involved. Over 37 years the Deepings Lions have raised over £275,000 for charitable purposes, much of which has been spent helping local community groups and projects. Anyone who uses the Deeping Community Centre will have seen the garden that is maintained by the Lions throughout the year, as well as the planted verges of Spalding Road which are a blaze of spring colour with the bulbs kindly bought and planted by Lions members. Each year a number of Lions members assist Age Concern with taking some of the more elderly members of our community out for a cream tea, Burghley House proving to be a very popular place for them to enjoy tea and scones. continued >

DEEPING LIONS
Due to the rapid growth of both Market Deeping and Deeping St James the annual Santa and his sleigh run has now become a 17-night marathon. Lions, together with Rotary, run Santa’s sleigh every December, and The Deepings collections are also made in many of the outlying villages, meaning that by Christmas Eve most Lions are ready to put their feet up in the knowledge that between £8,000 and £10,000 will have been collected. Today Deepings Lions has just 16 members many of whom are retired, women are now actively encouraged to join Lions to add their undoubted knowledge to the group. Recruiting members is and always has been difficult to achieve, and membership did fall to single figures in the late 90s, when the club was in real danger of folding, but an intense recruitment drive was relatively successful, avoiding the club’s closure. But it isn’t all work and no play as members enjoy social events, have fun and make firm friends outside of Lions that continue even after members leave the club.
Today the Lions meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month in the White Horse Pub on Church Street. Meetings are quite informal and usually last about 90 minutes where plans are made for whatever event is next up and coming, where requests for money from organisations or people in need are discussed, and where a few beers are consumed. I am certain that Melvin Jones, the Chicago businessman who founded the organisation 100 years ago this year, would be proud of how his dream has become reality, in that 1.4 million people are prepared to give up some of their spare time to help others less fortunate than themselves in their local community. Deepings Lions may only be a tiny cog in this wheel but their help and commitment to our local community should not be underestimated at all. Millionaire’s Shortbread and hot chocolate staved off the cold November morning when we arrived at Stamford Auction Rooms with Jessica Wall on the rostrum and the auction already in full flow. But was this the extent of the millions and would the contestants in the 2017 Deepings’ version of Bargain Hunt go away emptyhanded?
each. A delicate silver basket, with pretty pierced sides, and made in Birmingham in 1907, exceeded its estimate and came under the hammer for £35. What a great way to do your Christmas shopping, I mused; allocate yourself a sum and buy it all in one day, no parking fees and a lot of fun! Now there’s an idea.
There were some friendly Deeping faces in the room which was presided over by one very large wooden teddy bear puppet. What a fantastic item to dress a shop window! And then I quickly remembered just in time that I didn’t have a shop! Having had a quick scout round around the room and located the items that Deeping teams from DT Stoves and The Deeping Bed Shop had bought a little over a month before, photographer David Pearson and I settled down to watch the screen as Jessica expertly handled bids coming in over the telephone, on the internet and from the floor.
Then for the Deeping lots. First up was a vintage soda siphon made in England in 1927 and with an estimate of £10£20. Would it attain the dizzy heights of Pictured Jessica Wall of Stamford Auction Rooms with Claire Stubbins of £70 achieved for a similar piece by Anita Market Deeping Antiques hands out cheques to the teams from DT Stoves Manning of TV’s Bargain Hunt? No! But and The Deepings Bed Shop for Sue Ryder and Cancer Research UK it achieved the top end of its estimate at £20 to the man in the cap at the back of the room. Next up was the vintage yellow glass decanter set with gilt decoration and six glasses. It was bought by Amy and Alison from DT Stoves for £10. While it didn’t earn the pair any money for their charity, Sue Ryder, it did hold its own and the hammer came down at £10 to a buyer on the internet. The first decanter set that the pair had chosen was up next. It was a pretty 1960’s set with four glasses and it had been bought for

£20. Jessica had estimated it for auction at £20-£40. Unfortunately others did not share her optimism and it was sold to a buyer in the room for just £14! A steal! The French sucrier, dating from the 1930s-40s was now centre stage. The pair had haggled and bought the item for just £10 – they were vindicated: £16! Things were looking up. It is fair to say that the tall retro green glass stem vase had appealed to Alison and she
public were not captured by the potential of the piece and it only made £17. The little African half masque reduced to £9 neither made nor lost anything for the Deeping Bed Shop and so their haul on the day was a respectable £56 - the beneficiary was the Breast Cancer Charity.

The Deeping Bed Shop team were in the limelight next when their framed collection of pipes came up. They had been bought for a knock down £22 and Jessica had bravely estimated them as being worth between £25 and £35. It was a great shame that the

The Big Garden Birdwatch 2018
To me, the Big Garden Birdwatch is a chance for people to reconnect with the nature on their doorstep, something most people rarely do. Watch the Starlings scrap over your kitchen scraps. Check out the Robins standing up to each other during territorial fights that will shock you. Look out for the beautiful Blue Tits, whose colours are so bright. I bet you will see something new and unexpected.
In January 2017 over half a million people across Britain took part in one of the biggest surveys of wildlife in Britain: the RSPB Bird Garden Birdwatch. Now in its 39th year, this snapshot of our nation’s bird life has built up quite a picture of how our garden birds are doing. The format of the survey has been the same since the very beginning, meaning that the information gained is comparable year on year.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget where this survey started – with the kids. I remember as a young child the Big Garden Birdwatch was one of the things that cemented my love of all things wild and the natural world.

The Big Garden Birdwatch was born as a way of engaging the youth membership of RSPB during the cold winter months with a nice simple activity of counting birds in their gardens. Blue Peter got behind the survey and a one-off turned into an annual event. In 2001 the RSPB encouraged its adult membership to take part for the first time and the rest, as they say, is history.
Why take part? Obviously this survey, with its long history, has given us all a greater understanding of what is happening to our garden birds we all know and love. For example, since the survey started it has shown a overall decline in two species that most of us probably won’t have noticed: Starling and House Sparrow. It has also shown that Blue Tit and Wood Pigeon numbers have both increased. Although it’s not the most scientific survey in the world, its results have led to the rise in House Sparrow nest boxes, for example, in the hope of reversing the decline. OK, I admit it. That’s not particularly the reason Black Cap why I would encourage people to take part. Yes, the data collected is all very important and may even be a bit interesting. The reason why I would encourage everyone to take part is because we now live in a world so detached from the natural world around us, most of us only experience it on TV.
As a hobby, birdwatching is becoming more and more popular among teenagers and many of their interests will have started with their parents or grandparents getting them to help in the Big Garden Birdwatch. I’m certainly not advocating that we force it down their necks, but certainly see if they want to help you. After all, there are worse hobbies to encourage...
Taking Part The Big Garden Birdwatch is not complicated. Choose a good spot to watch birds from in your garden for one hour from Saturday 27th- Monday 29th January. Count the maximum of each species you see at any one time. For example, you may see two Blackbirds at ten past, three at half past and just one at a quarter to – you would only record three Blackbirds. This method means you are less likely double count individuals. If you don’t have a garden then a park or relative’s garden will do the job. And what if you don’t see any birds? Then still send in the record as it is still useful data. Five Ways of Hygge Living in The Deepings
There’s no other way to start than first understanding how to pronounce Hygge, so that’s Hue-guh not Hoo-gah. Next we want to know what this Danish way of living means to us, what’s so great and how we can bring Hygge into our lives in the Deepings. Emma Lannigan explains. Nordic and Scandinavian styles of living and culture are rated as the happiest across the globe. There’s simplicity, sense of purpose, function and a sense of minimalism. The approach of less is more. Instead of having ‘things’ around the home, things have a purpose and more often a story behind their purchase. Hygge is what I would call my ‘be life happy’. A space and time where in that moment I just am me, feeling love, relaxation and my inner happiness. So follow me now as I guide you round the Deepings and share ideas of how you can enjoy the feeling of Hygge in your life.
Two: Creative Time and Play In our busy lives we don’t get much time to stop and do something different like being creative. Have you seen recently the wonderful delights of creativity and craft we have around us in the Deepings and local area? When we focus on creating we’re not only present in the moment, we’re also connecting and being social. This helps us feel much brighter and supported and you can feel that you’ve really achieved something too. Spoilt for choice to some degree, the Deepings Library runs a knit and knitter group; Riverside Beads runs various craft workshops throughout the year; and look out for other pop-up creative and craft events hosted in our local venues, like the Green School.
Three: Meeting up with Friends
One: Take a Mindful Walk around The Deepings We’re really fortunate here to have such a choice of walking paths to take you either through our historic town, down along the river path or out and around the town passing through the open fields. The Deeping Nature Reserve out on the Deeping St James road over the railway crossing is a wonderful 1 mile walk. As you enter the track you immediately feel like you have ‘escaped’. Head down the track and through the gate and you are greeted with the open lakes where you can sit, and depending on the time of day and weather, notice the light dancing over the water and the birds gracefully flying overhead. It really is a walk where you can allow your mind to slow down and simply enjoy the sights, sounds and feeling, on your own or with family or friends. (Please note no dogs are allowed in the nature reserve.) 46
It’s particularly harder to find that get up and go in the winter months and especially after the festive season has wrapped up for another year. Finding the Hygge feeling with friends and or family will help energise you. A change of scenery can be another home or a local cafe or restaurant; a chance to get out, breathe in the fresh crisp air and relax, talk and laugh in good company. The Deepings has a delicious variety of cafes and restaurants in which to meet up, and some you can combine a walk with too. From the Oasis Cafe, Inside Out Cafe and The Cow Shed (at Swines Meadow Farm Garden Centre) to the north of Deeping, and Cinnamon, Lilli’s, The Well and Rustic capturing the heart of the centre. Think about taking time out for a warming hot chocolate or pot of tea. It’s the feeling it creates that will leave you all warm. Four: A Hygge Home There’s not much to be done outside in the garden at this time of year, so we turn to look at the inside. Creating a home that gives you the feeling of Hygge is not about buying a style, it’s about creating a feeling - your feeling of space where you relax, feel calm and happy.

A little further in Bourne there are pottery classes. There are golf courses, angling and equine centres, Rutland Water on the doorstep, and the Burghley Film Festival. Plus we have local theatre groups and professional tours in Peterborough and Stamford. Or take a breathtaking walk on Brancaster beach less than 90 minutes away. In The Deepings we have a community that brings together new experiences. Just ask someone you know in Deeping and you might just be inspired.

Fortuitously two visitors’ books were left at Peterborough’s East Station in 1916-17 by the Women’s United Total Abstinence Council in an attempt to keep servicemen occupied and out of the pub as they made their way to and from the front lines. They have been painstakingly transcribed and are part of an online display at PeterboroughWW1.co.uk. The exhibition at the Museum is the first time that these books have been put on display and will be also be bought to life through film and audio.
