Last year five remarkable woman turned what for them was a tsunami in their own lives into a gift for other people. In producing their 2018 Calendar, ‘Gracefully Uncovered’ they not only raised a total of £7156 but they also developed an inner strength and positivity themselves and proved inspirational to others. In the words of Michelle Davenport ‘We wanted to show other women sharing the same diagnosis that anything is possible. Far from being a full stop this is a new beginning.’ It was serendipitous that the girls were at Peterborough City Hospital on Valentine’s Day to present cheques to Cancer Research UK and Peterborough City Hospital Breast Unit. Their achievement would not have been possible without the people of the Deepings who purchased their calendars in their droves and their sponsors; P J Thory, Fisher Print & East Midland Waste. This was in a month when Age Concern Deepings raised £25,000 ten months ahead of time and are now in possession of their much needed new mini-bus (more in News). Another occasion when the people of the Deepings showed their enormous generosity. Another occasion to rather be in Deeping! 3

The Deepings Gang Show this year put on a little bit of a glitz in a show at the Deepings School which was again a triumph!

The feature in the February issue of the magazine inspired many fold memories of the Cafe and Sweet Shop, Jill Thomas can still remember the taste of the coconut mushrooms and Roger Smith recalls: ‘Mr Newton was a lovely old man, a bit like one of the characters on kids’ TV. You would enter the shop, a bell would tinkle and as if by magic, Mr Newton would appear. When I was a five year old going initially to the Green School opposite St Guthlac’s, if I was lucky and had money (very little) I would pop in The Imperial Sweet shop for a cornet ice cream, I don’t know if I was privileged or not, but he would sell me a small ice cream for 1/4d. A Farthing!’

John Hayes MP was on hand to celebrate The Deepings School achieve the National Quality Standard in Careers Award – Career Mark platinum. The first school in Lincolnshire to achieve this status and one of only three in the country. To qualify the school had six successful revalidations every two/three years which highlighted the quality of the careers education programme across all year groups.

Based on a scene from the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War an orchestral composition entitled The Irish Brigade by Deepings composer, George Brown will be played for the first time at a concert in the Oakham School Chapel on Saturday March 10th. George was inspired to write the piece when he visited the battlefield when working as a music examiner for Trinity College London. The concert is given by the Rutland Sinfonia and this will be the second time that they have played a piece by the composer.

NEWS Age Concern were on Cloudnine when a presentation was made by Alison Ireland of the popular local gift shop of a cheque for £230 for the Minibus Replacement Appeal. This brings the total of her donations to Age Concern in the last year to over £600.

When collector John Greaves picked up a playing card game in a dusty box in a sale he had no idea of the treasure that he had bought. Blowing away the cobwebs he could see that the game was ‘The Age of Invention’ and on the back was a barely decipherable description. Greaves and his friend John Billings took a fresh look at the inscription and eventually came to the conclusion that the game was given to Elizabeth Burbidge of Northborough on her seventh birthday by her great uncle James Haynes of Wensor Castle Farm, Spalding Road, Deeping St James. The pair went on to examine the card case under ultra violet light and scanned the image so that it could be enlarged on their computer. The almost invisible maker’s name of D. Carvalho of 166 Fleet Street, London, became visible. Further investigation revealed an advert in the Morning Post of December 1833 which illustrated the range and the type of work carried out by the publisher. Amongst the
list of Infants’ Own Books and Annuals was The Book of Dandies or Old Friends in a New Shape, containing his Rout, Wedding, Ball etc. with 100 coloured engravings designed by R. Cruickshank, half bound, priced at 7s.6d. Closer examination of the cards revealed that the hand-coloured engravings of the various inventions depicted on the cards were definitely in the style that Cruikshank was using at the height of his career. Further investigation showed that the various inventions were the subjects covered in The Atlas – A Weekly Cyclopaedia of Politics, Literature, Science and Art. D. Carvalho also published similar card games of 20 cards, this pack almost identical in size and shape. Each card has an identifiable number 1-4 and a classification by letter, with five classes A-E, and it is therefore safe to assume that the card game would be played by the same rules as Happy Families. continued >

James Haynes was a wealthy farmer owning 530 acres and employing 18 men and 11 boys. He had married Elizabeth King, born in 1796, and it was her sister Mary who had married into the Burbidge family, Elizabeth being her great granddaughter, the daughter of a union between her granddaughter Ann Burbidge and Thomas Richardson. Little Elizabeth had opened the package containing the cards as a present from her

Great Aunt and Uncle in 1844 at her home, Paradise House, Northborough. Queen Victoria had not been long married to Prince Albert, children were no longer allowed to be chimney sweeps, and David Livingstone the explorer had just been attacked by a lion in Africa. In 1851 Elizabeth had moved to live with her Uncle at Wensor Castle and ten years later as a young woman she married William Cole at West Deeping.

This team knows no boundaries! Right at the forefront of one of the most successful businesses in the Deepings are three young people who take the cut and thrust in their stride, making the running of the Boundary Fish and Chip Shop and River Restaurant look easy! This morning all is calm at the River Restaurant, a black horse lazily meanders across the opposite bank and a moorhen chirrups by the river. But last night the restaurant was thronged with a local group of over 50 members who along with regular customers kept the staff busy until late in the evening. This morning they are bright and full of banter. Carefully mentored by Managing Director Bill Shaw, Chantelle (30) has worked at the River Restaurant – celebrating its tenth anniversary this November – for nearly as long as it has been open. A Tallington girl, Chantelle worked part time at a cafe while training to be a hairdresser at Stamford College. She then came to work at The Boundary part-time, starting from the bottom working on the takeaway and restaurant and working her way up, quickly becoming fulltime as a Restaurant Supervisor for The River Restaurant, and then shortly after becoming the Restaurant Manager. Chantelle has been tending to the customers in The River Restaurant ever since. As with her colleagues, Chantelle relishes the crazy busy days of the year the most, Good Friday, Raft Race day, Mother’s Day and on the evenings when the restaurant holds special events – Sounds of the Sixties and the sell-out Elvis Nights. Chantelle and her partner, who she met in the industry, have recently bought their own house in Deeping St James . 18
With a methodical mind and great organisational skills it was a natural progression for Chantelle last year to be made Business Manager, with responsibility for recruitment, training, rotas, invoicing and the payroll. Now for two days a week she is in the office providing a key backup service to the running of the business. The company pride themselves on their six-week training scheme which allows staff to gradually get to know the team and the drill and to steadily introduce them to busy times of the week. On a weekly basis Bill, James and Chantelle will sit
Fryer, quickly elevated to Assistant Manager and now just three years later is General Manager. James gets particular enjoyment from sourcing the highest quality produce for customers to enjoy and keep coming back for more. He works closely with local farmers to choose the best potatoes. Currently Agria potatoes are used for their fluffy texture and crispy outer skin. A significant number of 25kg bags are used on a weekly basis making The Boundary contract a lucrative one to have.
‘learnt their trade through the one university that everybody can go to…. the university of life’ down together, mull over the events of the past week and plan for the future. James (24), an A-level student, had quickly decided that a university career was not for him and having worked in catering for a year took the decision to work for The Leeton Group in Peterborough, an industrial company. Seeing the buzz around the Boundary enticed James back into catering and soon he was working as a Deputy
Four to five different suppliers are used to source fish; a low water content is important and the whiter the flesh the better. At the moment the cod being served at the Boundary has been fished in Norwegian seas. While James can often be found visiting the local farms to check out the potatoes, it is his ambition to go out with the sea fishermen and help bring in the weeks haul of fish!
Working with a close team of staff, there is nothing better for James than minimising the waiting time for the queue which often curls round outside the shop on a Friday evening. Back at home he has his partner Michaela, who is also The Boundary and River Restaurant’s cleaner, and four-year-old son Finley, and he plays in the Sunday League for Nene Park in Peterborough. Not only does James’ sister Alice (20) share his love of football, she plays as left wing/back for Netherton so she has also joined him at the Boundary. Having been brought up with their mum in Orton Longueville, the pair lost her to

cancer when James was 15 and Alice just 11. They moved to Deeping to be with their Dad and this is where Alice finished her education. While serving a two-year apprenticeship at a travel agency, Alice had worked at the River Restaurant at the weekends. When it came to choosing full-time employment she jumped at the chance of the role of Restaurant Supervisor. Setting the tables ready for opening, Alice enjoys the challenge of the busy times; there are frequent offers in the restaurant which give potential quiet times such as weekday lunchtimes a great ambiance: two children under ten years old eat free with one paying adult all day Saturday. Part
of Alice’s job is to ensure a warm welcome to all the restaurant customers, which includes many local groups such as Braeburn Lodge Care Home. Alice still lives in Deeping, enjoying her gym membership and her sport and the camaraderie she shares at work with a band of employees who work hard but well together. It is not surprising that the shop and restaurant have a raft of awards to their name and often it is the employees who are the ones on the stage receiving the plaudits and having their photo taken.
With a policy of involving staff in business decisions this is all the more rewarding when they have often been responsible for the ideas that have led to their nomination in the first place! James, Chantelle and Alice are prime examples of young people who have learnt their trade through the one university that everybody can go to... the university of life. Soon to celebrate ten years at the River Restaurant; Bill, James, Chantelle and the team would like to take this opportunity to thank all of their customers for their continued support and look forward to seeing them over the next ten years. 19

Keeping the wheels of Deeping turning is the stock in trade for these three young men – building successful businesses to help the rest of us get on with daily our lives. Cliff was born in Croydon but moved to Crowland when he was a lad. He had an interest in vehicles from an early age and started working for a small local firm at just 13 in his school holidays. Leaving school at 15 he landed an apprenticeship as a motor vehicle technician at Marshall Jaguar in Peterborough where he became a fully qualified technician. Cliff continued to work in independent vehicle workshops and further studied to be able to carry out MOT tests to Class 1, 2, 4 and 7 vehicles. Always a workaholic, Cliff did find time to meet his then future wife Becky and pursue his hobby of racing quad bikes, coming third in the British Championships in 2016 before the pressures of building his own business took over all of his time. He had been looking to start his own business since 2010, but planning issues and finding the right location had meant that this dream evaded him. But in 2012 the opportunity to buy Deeping Car and Van Hire came up and in October of that year he took over the company. Since that day he has completely changed the whole vehicle fleet and taken the big step of moving to new premises where the Frognall road reaches the A16 to Spalding. While this brought it own pressures in terms of renovating and extending the existing buildings, the move has meant that a whole raft of services affiliated to car and van hire have been developed. Now a fleet owner can rest assured that his vehicles are being cared for off the road while substitute vehicles are available. It was a clear step to offer vehicle sales as part of the package. Recently self-storage units have been added to the offer. For the first time he has taken his young family; Barbaro, 3 and Lateysha (18 months) away for a few days, Center Parcs in January, a big step when you learn that Cliff not only worked on his wedding day, on the days both children were born and often on Christmas Day as well! Determined to make his the best vehicle hire service for miles around with the family and employee Caine at its heart, you can’t help but feel the motivation for success which drives Cliff on is closer at every move!
DEEPING BUSINESS
Sharing a love of sport with Cliff, Jamie Clark of JC Security UK fame has not only been a life-long fan of Premier League Football Team Liverpool FC but in his youth, enjoyed playing himself for both Langtoft and Deeping Rangers. Due to the on-call nature of his job, he is no longer able to play but retains a keen interest and is the proud sponsor of the Deeping Rangers first team away kit. Jamie’s career in the Security industry began 18 years ago when he joined Farsight Monitoring Station. His talents were soon recognised and he was head-hunted by Marriott Security as a Trainee Engineer. He established himself as a fully-fledged Engineer and after seven years there, he moved on to Sonic Security in Ketton to broaden the scope of his experience in the industry. After a further four years as an employed Engineer, Jamie was able to realise his dream and set up his business, JC Security UK. With only one customer on his books, Jamie subcontracted for other Security firms initially before word of mouth about his reputation spread. The number of customers increased and today, JC Security UK is now proud to offer a wide range of security services to both domestic and business customers all across the Deepings and surrounding areas. The business is supported by Helen, Jamie’s wife, who has recently taken a break from her career in HR to spend some time raising their children, Teddy, three and new baby Piper. A Deeping lad, Jamie attended Market Deeping County Primary School before going to The Deepings School. From there he went on to acquire a BTech in Computer Studies at Stamford College. He still uses these skills today to ensure the Security services he offers continuously adapt to newly advancing technologies to ensure that JC Security UK remains competitive and at the very top of the game. continued >

DEEPING BUSINESS Jonathan Brewell, of Newton Fallowell Estate Agency, also attended Market Deeping Community Primary School, and then went on to complete his education at The Robert Manning School in Bourne. A keen interest in swimming meant that his first job was as a lifeguard in Bourne but then he worked in the local taxation department at Peterborough City Council before heading into estate agency. Called away to warmer climes, he and his future wife Katie moved to Gran Canaria where they lived for four years working in teaching and property. On their return Jonathan was keen to apply the skills that he had learnt into his own business and took the franchise for Newton Fallowell, opening up his office in a prominent location on Bridge Foot. Bringing integrity, honesty and high levels of service to an industry not always renowned for these qualities was at the forefront of Jonathan’s
So much do the people of the Deepings love their environment that one of the biggest problems is a lack of homes available for sale. The greatest joy for the team though is to bring a house to market, provide all the necessary marketing services and then guide the sale through to exchange and finally to hand the keys over. A home is often the biggest asset a family has and with the current system in England anything can happen until the sale finally goes through. Jon sees his role as giving the best possible advice, managing expectations and easing a client through what can be a bumpy ride! mind when he bought into the franchise. Now four years into the business and with three staff, Jon enjoys bringing his knowledge and love of Deeping to prospective buyers. He has noticed that even with the housing growth Deeping has not changed in nature and remains a great place to bring a family up, to enjoy the old buildings and the picturesque river as it courses through the town.
Giving people time is the most important part of the business for Jonathan and long days go with the territory but now with a great team in place in the office, a summer holiday with wife Katie and children Lila (3 years) and Freddie (6 months) is on the cards.

Spinning a yarn about wool...
WOOL
As Knit & Natter groups become ever more popular in the Deepings it’s time to find out a little more about the subject in hand.. wool! Demand increasing for alpaca yarn Yarn made from alpaca fibre is becoming increasingly popular and fashionable in the UK because it is soft to the skin, breathable and warm, as well as being surprisingly strong. One of the key qualities of the yarn is its hypoallergenic qualities, which means it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction – good news for any allergy sufferers. Alpacas have been very much in the news on TV programmes such as Countryfile, and locally Misty Meadows Alpacas at Maxey, established last year, have a small heard of eleven. Owner Karen Hepworth-Lavery said: ‘Whilst our main aim is to work with schools and offer occasional alpaca experiences, the alpaca fibre is also a very important aspect of the business. There is quite a demand for it, and we already have orders for three of our fleeces for this summer. The alpacas are shorn every year and their fibre is fine – the fleece of the alpaca is correctly referred to as ‘fibre’ rather than wool.”

There are two basic breeds classified by fleece character: the huacaya, which has a sheep-like woolliness, and the suri, whose fleece hangs in long spiral locks. The alpacas at Misty Meadows are of the huacaya variety. For more on Misty Meadows visit their website at www.mistymeadowsalpacas.co.uk
Did you know that when you tread on your wool carpet the wool itself could easily have come from the sheep born and raised at Moor Farm? Sheep are sheared in June, earlier if it is warm and later if cooler as the ewes are still suckling their lambs at this stage and need their fleece to keep warm. Leave it on any longer, though, and with the rising heat they will be prone to maggots and disease. The shearer comes from Norfolk expertly taking 1-2 minutes to shear each sheep, and fleeces are turned inside out, wrapped into a ball and baled into 25s. They are taken to Central Wool Growers in Stamford and £3 is paid per fleece – a loss leader as it has cost £2 per sheep to shear! The wool is used mostly for carpets and for insulation. This year 92 ewes on Moor Farm are due to lamb from mid-March and of 92 ewes 61 twins, 19 triplets and 10 singles are expected after they were scanned in January. With only two teats it is considered cruel to leave the triplets with their mother and deprive them of colostrum essential to keep the lamb disease free so one will be fostered or bottle fed long with any orphaned (cade) lambs. When they are well mothered and settled they are let out on to grass in small groups for the summer. By 31st March, lambing day at Moor Farm, there will be plenty of these young harbingers of spring to see! (See What’s on) continued >

The Wool Artisan - Ruth Ellis
The Spinner Kate Drewett from Deeping St James was inspired to take up spinning by her cousin with the original intention of making her own slipper socks. She borrowed a spinning wheel from the Peterborough Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers before eventually buying one of her own. Now she has had great fun in sourcing her own fleeces, some of which came from the flock on the Landyke Trust land in Helpston and some were given to her by a shepherd who she got talking to while on holiday in Scotland. Spinnng, she says is like learning to ride a bike, once you have mastered it you never forget! Having first washed the fleece it is then carded to make rolags which are the sausage shaped pieces from which the wool is spun. The process is very relaxing and can easily be completed whilst watching the televison. After two to three hours you could expect to have produced two bobbins full of yarn This is enough to then ply together to form two ply wool ready for knitting. The homespun wool bears more character than that which is shop bought with twists and occasional blemishes. Kate has recently started to dye her own wool, onion skins producing a fashionable mustard colour but food dyes can be used to great effect as well. Kate then knits her own garments using the home spun and dyed wool - not only therapeutic but a very productive pastime! Want to know more? The Weavers Philly and Gemma were brought up in rural Oxfordshire. After leaving home they went to university, followed their own careers and had their own families. But early last year after each had independently been given The Little Book of Hygge - the Danish way to Live Well, they realised that their lifestyles already followed the style of hygge. Thinking that others might like to share in the wholesome goodness of handmade crafts, they have built a company www.thehyggeco.co.uk/ where it is possible to buy and commission the woven wall hangings expertly made by Philly who brings a lifetime of experience to her favourite pastime. Having studied textiles at Brighton University where she graduated in weaving, Philly worked for the design weave company, Wallace Sewell in London, supplier of woven textiles to leading retailers such as Saks New York. Later working in the buying department for Principles learning skills she now sources the finest mohair and lambswool for her textured and artistic woven wall hangings. Meanwhile sister Gemma, based here in Stowgate, hires out a selection of vintage woollen picnic rugs that she has collected over the years, which are available at www.thepicnicpatch. co.uk/ . Thinking their obsession with all things woollen was peculiar to them, it was a touch of serendipity when researching their family tree to trace five generations of shepherds! Ruth learnt to knit at her mother Barbara’s knee and has been clicking away with her needles nearly ever since! Having married husband Mick and moved to Crowland her children, James and David, were wearing crazy jumpers before and if the truth be told after the craze took hold! A career at St Guthlac’s School in Crowland looking after children in the behaviour unit followed and knitting took second place. After a brush with breast cancer, though, and having taken up knitting again, this time for her grandchildren, Ruth decided that she would make a career out of her hobby. Her unique and adorable tea cosies can be found at The Lovely Little Tea Room in Thorney, at Sophie T’s in Yaxley and at the Pet Shop, Dukes in Crowland. Having made seven tea cosies to represent Olympic champions taught by a teacher in Peterborough, she was asked to make her most unusual tea cosy to date - to depict the same but now retired teacher’s love of fishing so a picnic blanket with a fish holding a rod on which was caught an ice blade and a trophy! Amongst many requests Ruth has been commissioned to make Arianwyn, a character from A Witch Alone for author James Nicol and a tea cosy of Mrs Cory from Mary Poppins for the actress who played her. Now trading professionally under the name The Wool Artisan Ruth’s products will be on show at the I’d rather be in Deeping Mother’s Day Tea and Craft Fair at Swines Meadow Farm Nursery on Sunday 11th March 2pm-4.00pm. New Puppy? Getting a new puppy is a very exciting time but choosing the correct treats & toys can be quite daunting. That’s where we come in! We are here to advise you on the best and safest products for your new addition. A puppy kong is a great purchase, Available in 4 sizes to suit all breeds they can occupy pups for hours. They can be stuffed with paste, dog peanut butter, biscuits… the possibilities are endless. Vegetable based chews are also fab treats, they are healthy and they don’t pose the same risks as rawhide (which we don’t recommend for puppies). There are lots of natural healthy treats available in store. Another good trick is to pop some hot water on some of your dry food to make a gravy, then soak a rope toy in this. The flavour will keep your puppy entertained for longer and the rope is great for cleaning their teeth. You can also freeze them to help sooth those teething gums. Antlers and buffalo horns are great long-lasting treats but it’s best to steer clear of these while your puppy still their milk teeth as they can damage them. It’s worth remembering your puppy will most likely destroy most things while they are teething so it’s probably best not to spend too much
money on a nice bed until they have grown out of the chewing. Vet bed is great to start with, it’s machine washable and hard to destroy, we also sell this by the metre, so you can get the perfect size. Plastic beds with a blanket are another good idea. We offer a harness fitting service instore. A basic harness is probably best to start with and then invest in a more durable one when pup is a bit bigger this way you won’t have to buy a more expensive harness twice. With over 20 different harnesses in stock ranging from tiny to XXL you should find something you like Puppies will also be missing their mum and siblings so might be a bit upset when they are alone. A heartbeat toy or a warmable toy can be really helpful as can products such as Adaptil and Pet Remedy. Remember the awe-inspiring opening to the London Olympic Games in 2012 (yes, six years ago now) and the talents of its producer, Steve Boyd? Wonder where his creativity is being deployed now? Well, wonder no more! Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham, provides the breathtaking setting for Kynren described by the BBC as ‘A thrilling romp through English history delivered at a breathless pace.’ A 90-minute show is performed by a cast and crew of over 1,500 volunteers who have been trained by the top performance experts in dance, theatrical combat, pyrotechnics, equestrianism and guest management. The cast is joined on stage by a menagerie of horses, sheep, goats, oxen, geese and donkeys, bringing each scene to life amidst jaw-dropping
special effects and an original soundtrack by award winning composer Nathan Stornetta. The performance transports you through 2000 years of history, myth and legend, as seen through the eyes of Arthur, the son of a mining family from the northeast. As dusk turns to darkness and the sun sets against the magnificent backdrop of Auckland Castle, the spectacle begins. The 8,000 seater open-air amphitheatre in front of a large stage with a lake at its centre is still. The music is of a kind that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end engulfs the audience. On stage King Harold rejoices, having just conquered the Vikings, but his celebrations are short-lived as a Norman longship bearing William of Normandy and his men appears. The ensuing pageant depicts our history from the Roman occupation
through to the splendour of the Tudors, the Georgian renaissance, the Industrial Revolution and two World Wars with many scenes in between. This July it is possible to be transported by luxury coach from the comfort of your own home on a visit to Kynren which also includes a stop for lunch in the genteel spa town of Harrogate, a day in the cathedral city of Durham with a relaxing cruise on the Prince Bishop’s River Cruiser and concludes with a visit to historic and picturesque York. Five great museums Stamford Museum High St., Stamford The Museum in Stamford was originally located in the Library on the High St where it had opened in 1961. It was moved in 1980 to a building dated 1895 which had been a technical school with the words School of Art and the town crest proudly carved above its doorway. Following cuts by Lincolnshire County Council in 2011 it moved back to a gallery in its former home at the Library. Although much diminished in size, the museum is convenient to access while visiting the shops or market and the interpretation boards give an insight into the development and the old traditions of the town including, the Bull Run, are attractive to the eye and informative. A great jumping off point into the history of the town of Stamford. Opening times 9-5 M-F (6.00pm Thurs) 9-4 Sat.
Rutland County Museum Catmos Street, Oakham, LE15 6HW 01572 758440 Housed in what used to be a military riding school the museum provides a great snapshot of lives of country people in the past. Homes, workplaces and pubs of the past have been recreated and the Museum contains many original forms of transport from an old Fordson Tractor to a Victorian Perambulator. For those interested in vintage farm machinery this museum does not disappoint. An upper gallery houses Roman finds including a late-Roman gold finger ring and a hoard of 2830 Roman bronze coins and associated pottery, from Tinwell Lodge Farm. The museum is quite big on crime and punishment and contains the only surviving New Drop gallows in the country which allowed more than one person to be hung simultaneously. The Royal Station Wolferton Nr Sandringham, Norfolk PE31 6HA Due to its proximity to Sandringham House, Wolferton Station became famous in the 1800s through its association with the royal family. The last time the present Queen passed through the station was on 28th December 1965. Although it is now a private home it is open where possible between 12 noon and dusk. The Station includes platforms, gates, and station rooms including the retiring room built for King Edward V11 and Queen Alexandra in 1898. Peterborough Museum Tucked at the end of Priestgate, just a stone’s throw from Peterborough’s crowded Queensgate centre, an elegant Georgian mansion offers an intriguing glimpse into the city’s past. Put the shopping on hold and enjoy a cuppa in the very rooms where scenes of a scandalous local family unfolded in the 1800s. Stand in the restored Victorian operating theatre where an X-ray pioneer helped to save local lives when the building was the city’s hospital. Wallow in pure childhood nostalgia in the Changing Lives gallery where displays about Peterborough’s more recent history bring the city’s fascinating story up to date. Take a step back in time through the imposing front entrance and discover a world of Jurassic ‘sea-monsters’, remarkable Roman artefacts, incredible craftwork handmade by Napoleonic prisoners of war and centuries of colourful local life right on our very own doorstep. Wisbech and Fenland Museum One of the oldest purposebuilt museums in the country, Wisbech Museum, opened in 1847 and today its collections are housed in many of the original mahogany cases. A treasure house of rare and eclectic artefacts, including an extensive collection of taxidermy birds, and notable Egyptian and Roman antiquities, the galleried hall also contains all the fixtures and fittings of Mrs Pooley’s village shop in Elm, which at one time incorporated the village post office and includes an impressive display of packaging and advertising memorabilia, including a clock boasting the homily ‘Milkmaid Milk Now’s the Time to Buy It.’ Highly prized from the Revd Chauncy Townshend collection is the original manuscript of Great Expectations which can be seen on the first Saturday of each month. A favourite cabinet, though, is a Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities of the kind that held sway before the Victorians carefully categorised all their objects, which includes a French eagle from a helmet found on a field at Waterloo, three tiny carved snuffboxes and a tin of Vermilion to colour the cheeks. ODDFELLOWS Olsen Cruises. The Active Travel Club ensures that for those who like to travel there are trips planned for like-minded individuals Exciting as it is to visit an exotic destination it can be very lonely to sit on your own at dinner – this Club ensures that this no longer has to be the case!
It may well be that you have noticed the sign on the side of the building in Church Street Market Deeping, just up from Toninos, that bears the words Oddfellows and it might be that you have read about or even attended the rather decadent but delicious Cold Pudding Club. But just who and what are the Oddfellows? The Oddfellows were set up in 1810 as a trade guild to provide a safety net for their members at a time when there were no trade unions, no welfare state and no National Health Service. The name derives from those skilled workers known as fellows and these were the ones left when all the specific trades had been allocated to their own Guilds. Meeting regularly, they would put a little money away each time into a pot. Then if one was sick and couldn’t 42
work, money would be taken out of the pot to help. In fact when the NHS was set up, the experience of the Oddfellows was utilised as a model of ordinary people banding together for mutual support. The Oddfellows still help in the same way today. Discretionary financial benefits are provided for members’ welfare, including household emergency and personal distress grants, financial support for children who have suffered parental loss and practical help following illness and respite care for carers. Legal assistance is also available for those experiencing problems at work or who have suffered personal injury or medical negligence. The Society has negotiated a raft of discounts and offers for their members from affordable medical insurance to discounts on cinema tickets and Fred
Closer to home the Society offers a range of social activities to which all are welcome, and branch volunteers ensure that every new member is warmly welcomed and introduced to other members of the group. This can be a boon for those newly moved to the area or suffering the loss of a partner. It’s not just the Cold Pudding Club, as lip smacking as that undoubtedly is! On 7th March the group will meet at the coffee shop at Waterside Garden Centre at 11.30 to have a chat and something delicious and then a mooch around the Centre together. From Wednesday 14th March 2-4.00pm a new craft club starts at the Oddfellows Hall in Market Deeping. All skill levels are welcome and refreshments and friendly banter are promised! For members this is £1 per session and non -members just £4.00. Dine Around is also a popular date in the calendar. Held monthly at the Riverside Hotel in Surfleet, the Group meets at 12.30 for 1.00 on Wednesday 21st March and you decide whether you would like two courses or one from the menu. There are two types of membership of the Society: standard at £25 per annum and Option Two, which give optical benefit and dental benefit in year 2.
