This summer saw the good, the bad and the ugly come together atÂ Deeping Lakes. The bad and the ugly were provided courtesy of fly tippers and graffiti artists - the good were in the shape of young people from the Deeping Youth Group and the Round Tablers who often dig the Deepings out of a hole! Supported by an artist Kaine Kulczak, funded by SKDC, young people worked on stencils over the summer months which were then painted as a frieze depicting the wild flowers which bloom on the site, covering up the ugly graffiti. Just as this work was being completed, a huge pile of fly tipping was deposited at the entrance to the Lakes, including a freezer full of buildersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rubble! This is where Deepings own super heroes came into their own, providing a skip to collect the rubbish which they then filled themselves. Another case of good triumphing over bad! The annual Deeping Business Club Awards, sponsored by Park Air, took place at a glittering ceremony held at the Deepings School. Welcome drinks were provided by Moore Thompson Accountants and the evening was hosted by Nick Ash of Wills & Probate. Four times Award winner of the Top Takeaway Award, Bill Shaw accepted his Award on behalf of his team whom he praised in his acceptance speech. The Charity of the Year Award was accepted by Helen Bembridge for LIVES, with Dementia South Lincs being second. Godsey Lane Coffee scooped the Awards for the Best New Business and for the Best Café. Cloudnine was both Retailer of the year and the winner of the Best Customer Service Award. The Best Service Company Award and the Young Business Person of the Year went to Lora Louise Edwards of Happy Tails. The Little Sewing Shop claimed the Award for Practical Excellence. Health & Beauty went to L&Co and Empire Gym was the winner of Fitness & Wellbeing, and also claimed the Deeping Business of the Year title. The Deepings Library won the Services to the Community Award and I’d rather be in Deeping magazine won the Media Award for the second time. The Chairman of the Deepings Business Club, Andy Pelling gave the Award in his personal gift to Norma Bald 1:1 Diet Consultant.

The Mulligans of the Waterton Arms John Mulligan was born in Enniskerry, County Wicklow in 1843, right in the middle of the potato famine when millions left Ireland to make their homes in the USA and in England. John became a soldier, serving through the Indian Mutiny and receiving a medal for valour. On his return he became a servant in Castor, Northamptonshire, where he met Mary Jeffs whom he married in her home town of Titchmarsh in 1876. They moved to London soon after where they had their first grocery shop in Lambeth but moved back to the area and ran a grocer’s shop on Walpole Street, Peterborough, Father Stephen by which time their family had grown to seven, one of whom, little Charles, died in infancy. With three more children the family moved to Granville Street but John died aged only 52 in 1896 leaving Mary a widow at 40. More sadness followed when daughter Ethelreda died aged 16 in 1908. Shortly afterwards Mary moved with four of her surviving brood to live and work at the Waterton Arms in Deeping St James It could be that a family connection got her the job but running a pub and being able to live in was ideal for a widow with children with the bonus of an established Catholic community in the area. Tragedy struck almost immediately when her daughter Mary was crushed and killed by a traction engine whilst cycling along the Spalding Road. Son Joe left the pub and ran a tobacconist’s shop opposite the cinema in Market Deeping. Trade flourished in this well-placed shop and later Joe became the Deepings Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths. Aggie left the Waterton to live in Ipswich with her new husband. 16

Mary seems to have been a successful landlady and remained the licensee for many years, helped initially by her son Laurence (Lol). They lived in the cottage next to the pub. Lol moved to London, living and working in the City but with the advent of war he joined the Royal Medical Corps attached to the 9th Battalion London Reserves Regiment as Private 3347. In August 1915 it was reported that he, with the Queen’s Westminster Rifles, had been gassed at Hill 60. Worse was to come. In June 1916 Mary received news that Lol had been badly wounded; the Mercury reported that he had been shot in both shoulders and leg resulting in an amputation. Writing home he said, ‘After 14 months the Huns have hit me at last; bear up, I am going on well, wounds not serious and hope soon to be sent to England.’ Sent initially to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, he recovered in Deeping St James. He was discharged in September 1917 with a pension of 27 shillings and 6 pence for nine weeks reducing to 19 shillings and 3 pence. Regardless of his life-changing injury, he took up employment at Baker Perkins. The Peterborough Advertiser reported in 1919: ‘In aid of the Discharged and Demobilised Soldiers and Sailors Federation, Mr Payen the proprietor of Pictures has given two special entertainments this week. A branch has been formed for the Deepings. The headquarters are at the Waterton Arms, Mr Burton is Chairman, Mr Baxter is Secretary and Mr L Mulligan is Treasurer.’ There was a tin hut in the garden, a venue for games and entertainment. Laurence helped the Quoits Club win the championship in 1921. Mary was prosecuted for allowing paid competitions for bagatelle and table skittles but she also received positive publicity for sheltering Belgian refugees in the pub during the war. In 1934 Laurence married District Nurse Phyllis Lanham in Spalding. Even in the family she

was always known as Nurse! They made their home in the cottage next to the Waterton Arms with a family of two, Howard and Amelia. Lol died aged 62 in 1958. Son Bill joined the regular army in 1908, returning to the village as an electrical engineer, and in 1919 married Dolly of the long-established Deeping Lenton family. They lived in Broadgate Lane where they brought up five children: Mary, Basil, Rita, Jim and Monica. Mary’s son John became a lino type machinist for a printer in Peterborough, leaving to work In Paris in 1903 and returning three years later. He continued in the print trade and in 1911 was working in Camberwell in London. Later that year he married Mary Gorman in Kettering and they had a son, also John, born In Wandsworth in 1913. Following the death of his first wife he married Mary Martin in Lewisham in 1915. From the family home in Colliers Wood he was called up in September 1918 becoming Private 182566 in the Machine Gun Corps training battalion. On his discharge at the end of the war John returned to London, buying a lino type on hire purchase and working for a newspaper. He moved back to Deeping St James for his son’s health and became a potato merchant, engaging his brother in London to sell the potatoes he bought locally. Sadly the business failed due to bad seasons and John’s inexperience. The family moved to Yorkshire and John died in 1963 aged 79 years. Of Mary’s elder sons, Herbert became a priest, taking the name Father Stephen. Bert became a chemist in London coming back to the village in 1940 with his wife Violet and their four children, Patrick, Peggy, Barny and Michael, continued >

FEATURE fleeing the air raids in London. They took 64 Church Street right next to the Waterton, with premises attached which Bert ran as a chemist’s shop. It was very popular as it saved Deeping St James folk from trekking up to Market Deeping. Number 64 rapidly became the Mulligan HQ, taking over from the Waterton after Mary’s death in 1934. On Sundays after Mass throughout the 30s and 40s the place was packed with the clan and friends downing gallons of Irish strength tea. Mary’s death had been a splendid occasion with a Requiem Mass conducted by Father Stephen (her son, the Chaplain of St Joseph’s Convent, Dorking) and the Parish Priest, and sung by the Xaverian Brothers. In 1919 the Xaverian Brothers (lay monks) set up a college in the old Manor House vacated by the Waterton family in 1891. Catholic life in Deeping St James had really taken off at this point; there was a resident priest for the Waterton Chapel, a choir and, in the 40s, even a prep school. In addition the Manor House and its extensive gardens and fields were available to the congregation. It could have been from the Xaverians that Mary hit on the unusual idea of having a full-sized statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in the Waterton beer garden. On her death this was placed in the chapel porch. Sadly, by the end of the war, four of Mary’s sons had passed away and grandson, Jim, had been killed in action in the RAF. In the 1950s there were lots of big family weddings but the Mulligan cousins mostly had to move away for work and they raised their families elsewhere. One such wedding was of Agnes Monica Mulligan (daughter of the late Bill and Dolly) to Mr Donald Carter youngest son of the late Police Sergeant and Mrs Carter of Beckenham. The ceremony took place at the church of Our Lady and St Guthlac, Deeping St James, and Father J. A.V. Burke officiated. Mass was sung by the choir of All 18

Souls Church, Peterborough. The bride was given away by her brother Basil who had travelled from his home in Arnhem, Holland, and attended by her sister Rita Dunn of Carshalton Beeches. She wore a white laced ballerina length dress with a coronet of pearls and lilies of the valley and a shoulder-length veil carrying a bouquet of red carnations, white heather and anemones. Anthony Evans, a school friend of the bridegroom was best man. As she left the church the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by Hazel Manning. There were 75 guests at the reception at the Georgians and the couple left for a honeymoon in Polperro. Well known in the Deepings, the bride trained at Stamford hospital and later at Queen Charlotte’s and the groom, formerly of Market Deeping, was an accomplished pianist who trained at the Royal Academy of Music, and became music master at the Pastor Bonus Secondary Modern School in Bromley. The couple made their home in Beckenham. The widows, Violet, Dolly and Phyllis however remained at the heart of everything in DSJ, joining in the Voluntary Laundry for the sick, the outings, bun-fights, whist drives, the fund raisers for a new church. Vi was known to everyone in the village, ready with gifts of apples from her orchard and a good old chat. With the passing of the widows, an era came to an end. Today there are Mulligans in Canada, London, Germany, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Hampshire but none of this clan remains in Deeping. But for those who remember, Deeping St James will always be their special place. Deepings Summer Ball A highlight of the Deepings summer calendar – the Summer Ball! But how did it come about and how long have we been putting on the glitz and raising huge sums of money for charity, while eating the best of the local food and dancing the night away to some of the top bands in the area? Well, the answer is that the Ball has been held for seven almost consecutive years (one was missed when Sharon married Michael) in support of the Deepings Sports and Social Club. It started off as a fleeting thought in Andy Tanner’s mind and was kicked around by a group of friends including a Director of the Club, Michael Roberts, the late Norman Fowler, Kevin Davenport and Pat Flynn. But it was Sharon Roberts (then Sharon Paul) who took the Ball, so to speak, and ran with it! Supported by Jackie Wayte, she hired the sumptuous marquee and the band and for one day a year only transformed the cricket pitch at the side of the Sports and Social Club bar off Towngate East into a space worthy of one of London’s top hotels! With a definite eye for decoration with pizzazz, guests are welcomed into a fabric-clad foyer leading on to the marquee set for dinner but with a glittering tombola, silent auction and an array of auction prizes to view en route. Over the years auction prizes have included transport by private jet to the Isle of Uist for a round of golf for four, trips with the pilot cutters in the port of Boston, punting on the Cam in Cambridge, tickets for the rugby and athletics – the list goes on and on. The most memorable, poignant and successful Ball was the one when Deeping’s own Calendar Girls – all recovering from breast cancer – launched their calendar: Steph Tarrier, Michelle Davenport, Sharon Post, Kerry Ash and Caroline Clifton had tastefully posed in a calendar whose sales were to sky rocket, but just on that evening alone raised £10,000 for charity. 20

Over the years Parkinson’s UK, the Deepings Men’s Group, Dementia Support South Lincs, the Deepings Youth Group, and Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance have all benefited, and two of the defibrillators in Market Deeping and Deeping St James were bought with proceeds from the Ball – which has topped over £45,000 over the years. Starting with just 170 guests in the first year numbers have topped 300. In order to realise the potential of the Summer Ball the decision has now been made to relocate to a country venue in 12 acres of land surrounded by atmospheric water features and romantic gardens. ‘The Granary at West Deeping is the perfect location,’ enthuses Sharon, who has plans for a red-carpet welcome, a champagne reception in the Stables Bar and sensational cocktail and gin bar to greet guests before they make their way into the marquee, where candelabras and chandeliers will grace the tables set for a four-course gala dinner prepared by renowned caterer, Rachel Clarke of Hanthorpe. Graham and Glenn from the Granary, as is the way with all the events that they stage, have proved to be very helpful as plans evolve and are proud that their historic watermill will provide a backdrop for such a prestigious occasion! With the charity yet to be announced, preparations are already underway: the date, July 4th set and the USA the obvious theme! Already people with a special birthday or anniversary to celebrate have seized the opportunity to book tickets for this stellar event to celebrate their special day in some style. The coming months will see the entertainment booked and some surprise elements added to the mix in what promises to be the most glamorous Summer Ball to date! What are you waiting for? Zoë Kornfeld explores some of the reasons why animals and children are such a wonderful combination… Peek in any child’s bedroom, and you are more than likely to find animals everywhere – on the Instagramworthy wall art, snuggled away in a mountain of soft toys, adorning their favourite clothes, and, of course, hidden away as well-loved characters in their book collection. As a child, myself, growing up in rural South Lincolnshire, I feel quite lucky that I have a whole host of childhood memories involving animals to look back whenever I’m feeling nostalgic. From the photo of me grappling with a lamb, bigger than myself, at a local farm one spring, to watching, mesmerised, as eggs became chicks from cracks appearing over the course of hours, as I sat patiently in front of our incubator, to teaching my dog Cocoa how to sit, and then shake her paw, and being so proud of both of us when we’d nailed it. Children are by nature nurturing. It is not something we have to learn as an adult, but something that is innate within all of us. Being around animals allows us to practise this care, and see, from a very early age, how to care and nurture other living things. My one year old daughter has the daily task of feeding our cats which, to her, is mostly a wonderful excuse to play around scooping and pouring, but to me is a fantastic way for her to develop a sense of responsibility at such an early age. Different animals have different needs – from grooming and mucking out horses, to feeding a rabbit a well-rounded diet, to taking the family dog for a run around at the local park. All of these require commitment, of course, and if the household’s youngest members fail in their enthusiasm at times, as they naturally might, this allows a great opportunity to talk openly about the consequences of our actions. Our investment in our time and our levels of care and patience has a huge impact on

other living things, something all children are able to grasp on their own level. There is a good reason why more and more schools, particularly those with higher levels of children with special educational needs, are finding the presence of dogs within the classroom are having a hugely positive impact on all members of the school community. Being around certain animals is extremely calming – they don’t come to the party with a hidden agenda, they don’t judge who you are or what you look like, they meet us on a different level – just like children. Those young and old, who spend time around animals, are able to develop their ability to be kind, calm and gentle, and in return they are given a huge amount of unconditional love. More often than not, our pets become integral parts of our families; they are fantastic companions, and we can develop huge bonds with them. So, when the worst happens and our pets die, it’s only natural that there is sadness and grief. It’s well known that as a society we are generally not very good at talking about the facts of life, whether that’s reproduction or death. This morning, we had a very generous gift presented to us on our doorstep by one of our moggies, but my son did not turn his nose up at the dead mouse that lay there, as we talk very openly about life cycles, and food chains. He has been watching David Attenborough documentaries with his dad since he was a few weeks old, and, unlike me, isn’t at all phased by seeing a wildebeest being brought down by a coalition (yes, I googled it) continued >

ANIMALS & CHILDREN of cheetahs. He knows that some animals hunt and eat meat, and combined with the fact that I have always talked openly about his grandmother passing away, I feel that we are really trying to help him cultivate a healthy relationship with these important and confronting parts of his life. This does not negate the fact that when our pets die, a loss is felt hugely: this is testament to the love and the bond that we have felt for them. Looking even wider, fostering a love of animals must surely be mandatory for all children, given the huge challenge climate change is presenting for future generations. And even if we take away that, let’s face it – animals are totally amazing! A child with a thirst for learning all about the animal kingdom, isn’t just going to learn about the names Presentsof different creatures, they are going to

learn about habitats, countries, climates, history, weather, classifications, social groupings, natural science, amongst others, not to mention the huge amount of exciting vocabulary waiting to be soaked up! So, fill your house with as many pets, large or small, as you have the time, funds and energy to care for, but also make sure your child’s shelves include National Geographic-style fact books, as well as their favourite characters such as Elmer or Spot the Dog. Fill your child’s days with animal encounters of all kinds, from feeding the ducks, squirrel spotting, as well as visits to the local farm, zoo or animal sanctuary. You’ll not only end up with brighter, happier, more confident children, but you’ll be filling their days with so many beautiful memories, that will surely last a lifetime.

Keeping pigs in the house and the breeding issues surrounding micro pigs didn’t sit well, but a chance encounter with a beautiful pig in an immaculate Italian country house offered a solution – a garden pig. After some research and a little officialdom (pigs need registering) Snout and Snuffles arrived in West Deeping. Pigs are not solitary animals and we realised we needed two rather than just one. These two brothers play, snuggle, even squabble and make a continuous cacophony of noise as they communicate back and forth. You rarely see one without the other come plodding along behind. Our pigs were bought as New Zealand Kune Kunes, although as they have grown it is probable that they have a more mixed background. Kune Kunes make good pet pigs. The breed is one of the earliest domesticated pigs and thus they are really comfortable around people. Our boys love nothing more than company, conversation and a cuddle with anybody willing to spend time with them. They recognise different people and welcome everybody with a cheerful chatter. As the smallest domesticated breed in the world Kune Kune are popular as pets. Whilst they are nowhere near the size of a commercial pig, ours are 60cm tall and solid beasties; they are a far cry from the mini pigs of social media posts. It is important that, whilst not huge, they have enough space to move and exercise freely. They really love a good run, will play chase with dogs they know and can turn a fair speed for little creatures.

Kune Kunes also graze rather than just root so our garden has not degenerated into a muddy mess. Snout and Snuffles spend a large part of their day wandering around munching on the lawn, with the added bonus of reducing our mowing commitments. Pigs are known to be clever and with a little bit of training the boundary between lawn and flowerbed is (generally) respected. Our boys have learnt a lot. They come when called, sit on command and can walk nicely on a harness. They are incredibly curious and involve themselves in any projects or gatherings in the garden. Being bright doesn’t always mean being good and they can get up to mischief if unsupervised. They have fathomed out how to open sliding patio doors, kitchen cupboard and jars of raisins. They know the fridge is a treasure chest of goodies and just need to work out the handle! Snout and Snuffles are not house pigs. They live in a refurbished playhouse within their own orchard. This gives them protection from the elements and their own space to dig, forage and just be pigs. It is, however, straight outside our back door which allows them to interact continually with ‘their humans’. It is impossible to open the door and not be greeted by a smiling face looking at you through the fence. For us our boys have been a delightful addition to our family. They provide company as people work or play in the garden, they chatter continually to each other or anyone who makes eye contact with them and they love nothing more than to lie on a blanket with their humans and snooze the day away. Public consultation period: 12th October to 23rd November The Deepings we know and love today is the unique legacy shaped for us through the activities and decisions taken by those of preceding generations. For hundreds of years, life here has focused on the benefits of living and trading on a busy crossroads close to the River Welland. The fascinating lives of residents and traders past and present, have created the character of the Deepings we are now able to enjoy: a mix of grand and conventional properties, well-used footpaths and sensible highways infrastructure, delightful parks and open green spaces, as well as an excellent range of local amenities and community endeavours. But, have you ever stopped to consider what our legacy will be for future generations? This month you are invited to take a moment or two to consider how the decisions we take now are going to shape the character of the Deepings for those that follow us in living and working here. The process is called Neighbourhood Planning and is a very local activity undertaken by the people who live in a town or village. The three main aims of Neighbourhood Planning are: • • •

Finding treasures in the Deepings Two teams enthusiastically gathered at Market Deeping Antiques for the 2019 I’d rather be in Deeping version of TV’s Bargain Hunt, where each team is given £50 to buy items that could then be sold at the Stamford Auction Rooms sale on 30th November. Any proceeds made in the sale would then go into a charity of choice both for Dek of Crowland Carpets and Judith Jacobs and Nicky from Moor Farm. In this case Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall would be the recipient which delivered exceptional end-of-life care to friends and relatives of both of the teams. Jessica Wall, proprietor and auctioneer at Stamford Auction Rooms was on hand to give helpful advice and guidance. However Dek, quick off the mark, was well equipped to identify a hand-knotted wool rug made in a developing country 70-80 years ago. At just £38 it seemed a bargain and to anyone looking for a cosy hearthside rug, it was a good buy but Jessica advised that unfortunately rugs and carpets do not make large amounts at auction. Undeterred Dek proceeded to pick up a neatly presented tie pin, made in England of gilt with a fish decoration. As a wearer of tie pins and aware that traditional dress has made a comeback in recent years, Dek needed no encouragement to snap this up for just £2! Meanwhile the Moor Farm team got off to a more leisurely start, shopping for items that would enhance Judith’s farmhouse kitchen. Her maxim, ‘I have to like it to buy it’ was not a bad starting point, agreed Jessica, but the oversized pressed glass cake stand, ideal for a lemon drizzle cake, was deemed to be

unlikely to raise additional funds at auction. The pair then alighted on a Homepride Fred flour shaker, the chief flour grader in a series of Homepride TV adverts in the 1970s and 80s. At just £10.50 this iconic figure seemed a good buy and Jessica agreed. Characters from TV and film began to develop into a theme in the Moor Farm selection as they quickly snapped up a Clover English Butter branded toast rack featuring the seven dwarves. A collectable and colourful piece which Jessica felt could well outperform its generously knocked down price of just £10. Both of these items resonated with Judith as a nationally renowned woman farmer. Dek, having discarded a potential bronze dog statuette, had found a large black vented box of local interest having Wisbech stamped on the top and painted inside. Jessica put £30-£50 on it. Dek needed no encouragement to add it to his haul and was delighted to snap it up for just £24 following a generous discount from the vendor. Halfway there, Dek headed off to the vintage and reproduction signs displayed in the corner of the store, and it was his turn to find an iconic advertising item, this time an Esso Blue Oil Paraffin Money Bank. Possibly genuine or if not a continued >

BARGAIN HUNTING good reproduction, Jessica agreed that the item, reduced to £18 by the vendor, was a well-priced buy. On his way back to the counter, Dek had £6 remaining in his pocket and snapped up some Royal Engineers’ cloth, brass and Bakelite military badges from World War II, deciding against some Victorian uniform buttons. Would this be a good decision? Time will tell! Sailors’ knives are attracting a lot of interest at sales recently, advised Jessica, and one, c.1940, caught the eye of the Moor Farm duo. So they chose that instead of a jardinière stand at just £15, especially favoured when the price was reduced from £25 to just £20. A selection of assorted items collected by Judith and Nicky would make the perfect lot, suggested Jessica, and so the pottery Suffolk barn at £1, the Royal Grimwades soap dish at £4.50 (perfect for serving soft fruit)

and the ER commemorative mug at £4 created an ideal group to be auctioned together. Inspired by their hour of speculative shopping both teams resumed their own personal shopping trips, having made their selection. We now wait to see how they fare at the auction at Stamford Auction Rooms on November 30th!

Across the Deepings there is a wealth of passion and talent and an emerging number within the community have their own side hustle. A side hustle is any type of work undertaken in addition to a regular full-time job. It can be generally freelance or piecework, providing an extra income. Side hustles are often things a person is passionate about, rather than a typical day job worked in order to make ends meet. Here Emma Lannigan, who specialises in coaching businesses, explains the stages of a side hustle to when it becomes a business.

Idea The idea for a side hustle will come from a big passion or hobby which you realise people will pay for. This might be from crafts, furniture, candles, baking, art, fitness, writing, photography, digital and social media marketing, virtual assistants, tech and more. When you don’t have a major passion and still want to earn on the side, people often use their main skills from their career. This could be organising, writing, selling, diy/ maintenance etc.

Passion over profit The first hurdle in a side hustle isn’t coming up with an idea or the making or packaging. The major hurdle is often the pricing. Being employed you have the guarantee (once believed) of regular weekly or monthly payments all in exchange for your time and skill. As a side hustle you have to set your exchange value and often you become so delighted someone will buy your product or service you charge very little. And then have to work harder to sell more and make more money. So the key here is: love your passion and match your value.

Motivation and growth There are a range of things that can damage the motivation, energy and passion for your side hustle. One is the pressure of your time alongside a job. Often you’re busy enough without the added pressure to work when you get home. The pricing as mentioned above can question whether it’s worth continuing too. The buzz of selling something soon wears off. But it’s not just time or money in a side hustle. Motivation and growth can be affected by the people you talk to, spend time with and also you own selfconfidence and belief. You might say to yourself, ‘Maybe I’m not good enough to do this?’ A friend or family member might say; ‘That’s such a waste of time, why don’t you just focus on your real job?’ Or ‘Do you really think people will give you money for that?’ 38

Side hustle to business Deciding when the side hustle becomes a business often means choosing to leave the perceived security of employment. over a period for many years has built up a regular and happy client base that are confident to recommend A.D. Mills to family and friends.’

A.D. Mills was started in 1949 by Arthur Mills when, new to Deeping (he was bought up in nearby Edenham) he saw a gap in the market for plumbing, heating, kitchen and bathroom installations in the local area. Arthur soon got to know everyone in the neighbourhood (which was much smaller then than now, of course) and was working here while the area grew as new estates were built and people moved here from outside. Initially Arthur moved into a small cottage at the top of Frognall but when his family came along he moved to his dream house in Towngate - which at the time was considered a separate village on its own. After a long and successful lifetime in the trade where he was the only plumber in the area, Arthur left the business to his sons John and Peter Mills, with John continuing at the helm. John was a well-known face around Deeping, and still is exhibiting his intricate depictions of local scenes in oil paintings at art and craft fairs. He married local girl Carole, daughter of haulage contractor and coach proprietor Dick Wooten, and they raised a family in Broadgate Lane, Deeping St James. Later he took his son Philip into the business. Now the third generation, Philip is building on the firm’s strong and reputable name in the locality. He continues to work and gain the trust of local customers and

Philip now runs the business with the support of his wife Donna. Philip said “after working for many clients on various projects over the years I still get great satisfaction and pleasure when one of the kitchens or bathrooms I’m removing and replacing was put in by my grandfather or father over 40+years ago” Recently Philip has restored a 1958 Bedford van to replicate the van which John drove in the early 60s and which he now enjoys taking to vintage vehicle events and supporting community shows such as the Deepings Carnival. A.D. Mills prides itself that all the business it gets is through word of mouth and it has never had to advertise, with repeat customers coming back to benefit from the services that Philip offers - anything from kitchen and bathroom installations to property maintenance. He hopes to offer this personal service to the people of the Deepings for many years to come to secure the future of A.D. Mills and keep busy for the fourth generation. A.D. FLOWER CLUB

Still blooming after all these years! Seventy two ladies attended an open meeting to form a Flower Club on the 31st October 1972. The demonstrator was Mrs Doreen Kerfoot of Edwinstowe who impressed as 62 people enrolled as members. A committee was formed with Mrs K. Frost as Chairman and thus started the Deepings Flower Club. Meetings were to be held on the third Tuesday of the month, as they still are, and the annual subscription was set at £1. The first official meeting of the Club took place at the Market Deeping County Primary School on Tuesday, 16th January 1973, and at that meeting it was announced that Mr and Mrs Harriman, founder members, had agreed to be President and Vice-President of the Club. During that first year much fundraising was organised and a sales table established. By the end of 1973 membership had increased to 75. In 1974 the club became affiliated to the East of England Area of NAFAS and the King’s Lynn Group, which enabled access to using a wider scope of Judges, Demonstrators, Speakers and Teachers. Members were encouraged to compete at the various shows and soon gained a good reputation leading to representing the Area at National and Area level. In 1978 the club represented

the East of England at Chelsea, collecting a Bronze Grenfell Medal, and there was also great success for those members who competed as individuals at these events. Some ladies attended the weekend courses organised by NAFAS; these were very informative and great fun. The Club was invited to take over the running of the Floral Section of the Deepings Show until 1992 when it was agreed to stage their own show and competitions. Flower Festivals have played a big part in the life of the Flower Club including those held at St. Guthlac’s, Market Deeping, and the Priory Church and the Catholic Churches in Deeping St James. Further afield members contributed to spectacular events in Cathedrals at Peterborough, Lincoln and Ely, Burghley House and Grimsthorpe Castle. More recently one member travelled to Westminster Abbey, together with two ladies from the King’s Lynn Group, to decorate the High Altar Pedestals and a Naïve Pedestal for Easter. Outings have always been popular whether it be locally or further away, for example, Highgrove; Blenheim Palace and, closer to home, Deene Park. Outings are always great fun and are open to anyone who would like to join. For several years the Competitive Show was a great success, attracting entries from a wide area, but sadly due to rising costs and lack of competitors this came to an end. Having celebrated the 45th Anniversary in 2017, the club continues to enjoy a varied programme throughout the year, and new members and visitors are always welcome. Come along and have a chat and a cuppa or join them at their open meeting on 12th November at the Deepings Academy National Demonstrator Nick Grounds will to entertain.
