Welcome As I sat on the boat racing our way back to San Pedro after almost 27 hours at sea, I began to take in the magnitude of swim number 2, the Catalina Strait: swells of 5 feet and winds of up to 19knots, well within the parameters of a Sailor’s Gale! What a journey from San Pedro, near LA in the USA, to Catalina Island and back… Another Great Ocean swum… The Pacific… What a day, one to remember for sure. Having set a Guinness World Record in the North Channel in 2016, we took on the much warmer Pacific. We swapped 12 degrees for 22 but took on the fact that there may be some wildlife not native to home seas… sharks! The mind plays wonderful tricks… At one time, I thought I was being followed! I am pleased to say that I was but by nothing sinister, other than my own foot! What an adventure… I am proud to be part of the ‘OW Ladies Relay team’, taking on the challenge of completing the Oceans’ 7 swims all two-way! 2 down, 5 to go. The next one will see us take on the strong currents of the Gibraltar Straits in 2019 and I for one can’t wait. If any of us put our mind to something, it is possible… This challenge is absolute proof of that… Please wish us luck… I am raising much needed funds for Papworth Hospital. If anyone would like to donate, please follow this link to read all about why this charity is so important to me and many others. https://www.justgiving.com/Clare-Wookey1 Clare Wookey 3

Cecil the Cockerel took up residence in DSJ allotments this summer. He spent a solitary few weeks pecking around, being fed by kindly gardeners and eyed up for supper by a Red Kite! It was then that Anita Hamblyn and her daughter Megan decided to take action and now Cecil is ensconced at the Goosetree Menagerie where he is enjoying the company of a not inconsiderable hareem!
Donna McKean Smith of Riverside Beads has brought out her second book on the Japanese braiding technique called Kumihimo. It’s a very versatile braid done using a foam disc and you can start the hobby from £5. The designs introduce and progress the braid from beginner level up. The book is available in store for £8.99 and Donna is also able to attend local groups to teach the techniques.
Following a very successful Duck Race in September the Deeping Lions presented a cheque for £3000 to Faye Nan from the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance team.

Bankside House
In the days when the majority of men in Deeping St James were agricultural labourers, the Buck family must have seemed like property magnates! William was a baker who owned the bakery in Church Street. The Buck’s also owned ‘The Ship Inn’ in Eastgate and ‘The Woolpack’ in Horsegate. In the late 1840s the cottage, now 61 Church Street, was in the ownership of Thomas, the son of William and his wife Elizabeth. After the wedding of Thomas’s younger brother James Parker Buck to Ann Loweth in 1847 they moved into the cottage. A little later on in 1855 at auction Thomas bought two small houses with their yards and gardens adjoining another two roods of land where 63 and 65 Church Street now stand. Two years later Thomas added to his portfolio by buying the two cottages that stood where Bankside House now stands. When Thomas died his eldest son, James Tansley Buck inherited the cottages. James was born in 1844 to Thomas and wife Jane Buck née Tansley. After leaving school he served an apprenticeship with John Crowson and he qualified as a Master Builder and Carpenter and set up his own business in South London, working in Bermondsey and Camberwell as well as returning periodically to supervise the building of property in Deeping St James. On the death of his Uncle James in 1901, James pulled the old cottage at 61 Church Street down and built the one that survives today. He also had the cottages at 59 Church Street demolished in order to build Bankside for his retirement. It had been his long-held ambition to retire to a new house in Deeping St James, but 14
pressure of work elsewhere kept him away from the task himself. Instead Messrs Alfred Arch Crowson were contracted to build number 59. Alfred was the son of James’s apprentice master, John. James would return from London from time to time to check on progress, staying with his sister Susannah Panton who lived with her family at 63 Church Street. Looking up, the date stone of 1911 is visible and it is true that with his commitments elsewhere James did not get the time to live out his retirement in Deeping St James, but he did die in his beloved Deeping on 30th December 1915. The properties were left to two nephews, William and Thomas Buck, who by this time had moved to America and sold the properties on to their second cousin, another James Parker, the son of James Parker Buck and Ann, née Loweth. The life of an agricultural labourer was not for James Parker who had joined the Army in 1867, serving with the Royal Engineers, in 1871 recorded as being at the school of Military Engineering in Gillingham, Kent. After serving for more than eight years he left to join the West Yorkshire Constabulary. On his 1876 application form he is described as 5ft 10 and three quarter inches with a fair complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. But the life of a PC did not suit him and he returned to the Army in 1877 as a 2nd Corporal in the Royal Engineers. Three years later he married Louise Jeanette Moores, at which time he was a NonCommissioned Officer in the Royal Engineers. Louise was from Poole in Dorset and before her marriage had been a draper’s assistant, working in Bournemouth. James served in Egypt fighting in the Second Egyptian War, protecting the Suez Canal and helping to build a railway for which, in November 1882, he was presented
FEATURE
with an Egyptian War Medal by Queen Victoria at Windsor. By 1891 James had become a Warrant Officer and was living in St Paul’s, Deptford, with his wife who was always known by her middle name, Jeanette. According to Chelsea Pensioners’ Records Service number 10283 James left the Army later that year and took up the post of Superintendent of the City of London Electric Lighting Company at Battersea Power Station. The couple lived at 55 Endwell Road, Brockley, with James’ second cousin Elizabeth Blessett (Annie) from Deeping St James. who acted as companion to Jeanette. They also had a general servant, Florence Tullett. from Greenwich. In 1916 James and Jeanette retired to Bankside, Deeping St James, where they lived in some style. In 1923 James stood as a Conservative candidate for the Rutland and Stamford Division and although he was unsuccessful he continued to work tirelessly for the party. His wife died three years before him in 1930 and his obituary in the Stamford Mercury recorded that ‘The death of James Parker Buck at the age of 82 has removed a well-known and respected figure from the Parish, he had been in indifferent health for some time but only confined to bed for a few days. He had served with the Horse Guards and with the Royal Engineers.’ In his will he left Bankside to his nephew, Parker George Buck, with the proviso that he should live there and not sell or mortgage the property in his lifetime. Parker George also received all the furniture and effects as well as four-and-a-half acres in Linchfield, along with his share in the Market Deeping Angling Society. James’ niece, Margaret Cooke, received £300. Elizabeth Annie Blessett received the house and garden at number 61 Church Street which was tenanted by Mr W. Henfrey. She also received a silver card tray, continued >

a Wedgwood jug and £400 in recognition of her devoted attention to his late wife. Annie’s sister Sarah, who had been their cook, received £200 and to share in the house left to Annie. His sister, Jane Bulley, was left £100. In total the estate was valued at £2,937. 14s. 2d. Parker George Buck, born in 1894, was the son of George and Kate Buck. Sadly his father died just after his birth and Kate returned to Ryhall with young Parker and her eldest child Margaret, where she kept a grocer’s shop. However, she then moved to Peterborough where she had had another child, Walter. Parker was employed as an iron moulder’s apprentice in the 1901 Census. He enlisted in the Army in 1915 and served with the RASC as a Private. He was later transferred to the Army Service Corps after receiving an injury on the front line. He was discharged in 1919 and was awarded the British, Victory and Star Medals as well as a Silver Badge. He returned to Peterborough, resumed his career as an iron moulder and lived in Craig Street. After receiving his inheritance he married Ada Pridgeon of Peterborough and the couple lived at Bankside with Parker’s brother Walter, who was a Clerk with the North Eastern Railway. On his death in 1945 he left the house and all its contents to Ada and £200 to Walter. His estate was valued at £1,918. 8s 5d. Ada remained at the house until 1951 when she sold it and moved to St Paul’s Road in Peterborough.
Sarah Blessett, living with her sister Annie at number 61, had died in March 1942 leaving effects of £1,036. 14s 11d to Annie and Fanny Blessett, a spinster. When Annie died in 1964 she left £6,119.12s. and the house was sold, proceeds going to her nephew John and the remaining half to the children of her brother David. After, Jack Cook, an engineer, and his wife Netta lived at Bankside with their son and daughter but after the family had grown the couple had a bungalow built in the grounds alongside the house. They cut a neat couple as they went for a walk every day at midday and eventually, after the death of Netta, Jack was the first person to buy one of the converted barns where the Manor House had stood on the corner of Hereward Way and Church Street. During the 1970’s Eddie Bond and his wife ran Bankside as a Bed and Breakfast. A colourful local character with a head of silver hair, Eddie drove a large car and worked as a postman. Mr A.A Crowson Eventually, when John and Sharon Aldridge bought the house, he bought their bungalow at the top of Millfield Road, Deeping St James, and tended a magnificent garden there. Lawrence Coulson ‘A Darker Light’ For an artist to have one of the biggest canvasses that you have ever painted (10 ft x 3ft ) standing next to a Warhol that has just been sold for £2.5 million in a warehouse waiting to be transported to a gallery in Shanghai is one of your all-time highs. But for Lawrence Coulson these highs just keep on coming! It started out in a very different way. With just O level Art to his name, Lawrence began work in a local builders’ merchants near his home in Cambridge but beneath the surface, as it turned out, was an embryonic artist of considerable talent waiting to get out! His father, artist Gerald Coulson, famous for his World War II aviation paintings, gave Lawrence a catalogue of pretty Victorian landscapes and told him to practise and see how close he could get! Rekindling a childhood interest when sketches of cars had fuelled the young Lawrence’s ambition to be a car designer of note, Lawrence had soon produced work that was seen to be good enough to sell in the pub where he and his father occasionally drank. Soon he was also selling at Cambridge Gallery and Framer Warwick and Sons and Restaurant 22, where he was to stage
a one-man exhibition. The young artist prepared for the evening with meticulous precision, carefully crafting invitations and compiling a guest list which included Birmingham gallery owner Paul Green who already worked with his father. The businessman made himself known and agreed to purchase work that was still available at the end of the evening. The twelve canvases that he chose sold; soon orders for more came through and they haven’t stopped coming! Now publishers Washington Green with Castle Fine Art have sole access to Lawrence Coulson’s work, who is now considered to be one of the country’s foremost artists. Initially, working as an artist and by that time being the manager of a busy hardware store was taking its toll and so, taking the plunge to forsake BUPA and a company car, in 1997 Lawrence became a professional painter. He set out to start work in his studio at nine in the morning and to put in an eight-hour day, eschewing the whimsical notion of an artist perusing the blooms in the garden with a glass of wine in hand. Instead Lawrence is a focused professional who works hard to perfect his art, seeking inspiration from Turner, Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church as well as the French Impressionists. He admits that one of his favourite DVDs is ‘Turner’ noting that Timothy Spall learnt to paint himself in his masterful portrayal of the artist.
“a focused professional who works hard to perfect his art, seeking inspiration from Turner, Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church as well as the French Impressionists” 18
His canvasses evoke the haunting atmosphere of the fen landscapes near to his home, the dramatic coastline and the seascape of north Norfolk. With rural France and the rugged scenery of Scotland in his sights the world is indeed Lawrence Coulson’s oyster.
His interest is the depiction of light on the canvas, the contract between light and dark and, a Gary Numan fan, the title of his latest collection of works, ‘A Darker Light’, pays homage to the musician while resonating with the focus in his paintings. Enjoying the opportunity to demonstrate his skill while at gallery events, Lawrence is particularly enchanted when those who fall in love with his work often paint themselves into the story. He was especially touched by the story of a buyer who had searched for the perfect picture to capture memories of his wife who had died seven years earlier and who broke down in tears when he identified just the spot in one of the works. With a son, Matthew, who is a photographer with an artistic eye, and a daughter, Olivia, who as a child sold pencil portraits of her friends at school, the dynasty looks assured. Wife Heather works with Lawrence maintaining the website and keeping the business side of things running smoothly. If there is one regret the artist has it is the demise of small galleries which are the lifeblood of the aspiring artist, those galleries to which the young Lawrence took his early paintings. In Deeping we are lucky to have the walls of Black Cab Studio near the Cross in Deeping St James which shows the work of local artists such as Lawrence, and there are still a couple of galleries in nearby Stamford. It can only be hoped that the changing face of retail will embrace our innate need to be in touch with all the senses that has been sadly neglected in the race to consumerism. A few years ago it seemed that wherever you looked there were lifestyle magazines, online articles and TV programmes telling you how to make your home fabulous, individual and unique. However, that was then superseded by advice on how to sell your home and maximise the price you can get for it by keeping your decor neutral and not too personalised. So we follow the trends – stag heads are now out, cacti are in, but nearly over......what’s next? How can you achieve a really great look in your home that will make you happy without breaking the bank? 1. Listen to your heart You know what you like! It doesn’t matter whether your favourite colours and patterns are in fashion right now or not – if you have always liked them you will still be liking them in another ten years. Be brave, don’t be held back by what anyone else might think about your taste and just go with it. Incorporate your family history – photos, items that reflect your culture, items that reflect your age (if you grew up in the 70s, embrace the macrame and houseplants!). Go for the colours and patterns that make you happy – if you love your style and are comfortable in your home that’s the most important thing. 2. Try before you buy Utilise the power of your phone by taking pictures of items you like, then using those pictures in your home to see if the items will fit and are the best option for your space. If you’re not sure of the size of a piece of furniture – a chair, for example – try using cardboard boxes to make a
shape in the same dimensions and see how that fits in the space you have. You’ll soon find out whether or not you stub your toe on it every time you walk past! 3 Shop savvy There are plenty of bargains out there to be had. Charity shops – particularly those that stock furniture – are a great place for finding both the basics and quirky, individual items, as are car boot sales. Remember, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! And in the same vein, look for antique/vintage/ retro shops. The upcycling trend has been gathering strength for a while and you can find totally unique pieces of furniture that won’t break the bank. Be prepared to give items a little tlc and try to see beyond colour – dark brown wood can always be painted! Online auctions and social media selling sites are also a great source but be sure to check the dimensions of items before committing to buy them. Look for community-run initiatives which recycle paint and fabrics such as CCORRN in March. continued >

4. Keep an open mind and take your time On the theme of online auctions and selling sites, doing your research and waiting for the item you want to come on sale at a price you want to pay is an excellent way of saving vital pennies. Good things come to those who wait! So be prepared to have a gap here and there while you build the look you’re aiming for. And be prepared to consider alternatives – you may start with one idea, but do a bit of research and see what else you can uncover. 5. Make your own! If you see something in a magazine or on a website that you really fall for but is ridiculously expensive, try to think of ways that you could make a copy. Even if you’re not creative yourself you may find that there is a friend, family member or local craftsperson who may relish the challenge of making you what you want at a fraction of the cost. Many craftspeople and independent traders will either negotiate on price or take payment in instalments if you ask. The chair in the picture is an original Parker Knoll chair which was re-upholstered in fabric designed by the client, who negotiated a substantial discount by allowing the designer to use pictures of it for advertising purposes. tips from Zoë Kornfeld
perhaps a teeny hand wrapped around a parent’s thumb, an older sibling’s hand resting gently on their younger brother or sister’s shoulder, or those perfectly formed newborn seashell ears. Be on the hunt for interesting shapes, colours and contrasts that might enhance your shot. It’s also a good idea to be aware of any elements in your shot that you don’t want to include. You could photoshop out that used tissue, but it’s much easier to remove it in the first place!
Anyone who knows me well, knows I’m a keen photographer. If truth be told, I’d love to give up teaching, buy a posh, new DSLR camera, and spend a year or so hot-footing it around the world, capturing my adventures along the way. However, as a mum of two young ones, these days, most of my photography involves crawling along the floor, or wiping yoghurt from my iPhone lens! There really is something so special about capturing family memories forever, and as our children grow so quickly, these memories, held in time, become priceless. Here are my tried and tested tips to bear in mind when trying to get the most out of your own family photos. 1. Get to Know Your Device – Whether your weapon of choice is a DSLR camera, a Polaroid or your trusty phone, the first thing you should do is make sure you know how to use it. The more you practise with your camera: the better
you’ll become. Play around with your settings, and don’t be afraid to experiment. For those interested, there is a fantastic local photography group in the Deepings, which offers support for enthusiasts of all levels of experience and interests. 2. Look for the Light – For photographers, lighting is key, and one of the first things you should consider is your light source. This doesn’t mean that your subject should always face the light: make sure you try out different options. This could mean anything from photographing your child playing in their room, with a little early morning light coming in from an open blind, or whilst on a family walk, creating a silhouette from the late afternoon sun behind your subject. Playing with light and shade is a great way of changing the tone and mood of your photo, and capturing different details. 3. All in the Detail – What’s not to love about a newborn baby’s tiny toes and feet? Don’t forget to take photos that zoom in on single features –
4. Angles – Such a simple one, but so easily forgotten… getting down to the child’s level is so important. Not only does this help avoid any strange proportions, but it allows the photo to feel more like a sneak peek into the child’s world. You don’t, however, have to spend your days crawling around the floor, as there could be an amazing shot waiting to be found from behind someone; perhaps of a father and child holding hands, or a grandparent sharing a story. You could also try looking down on your subject from above – the possibilities are endless! Something else to play around with is either filling your photo, by going in closer than you usually would, or standing further back to create some empty space in your shot. 5. Let’s Go Outside – What better way to capture the essence of childhood, than to take them to play outside, and then photograph their joy once there? Not only do you have a built-in background, but there may be seasonal props you could use – throwing leaves might make a fun action shot, and little people always look quite magical surrounded by long grass or bluebells. With an abundance of natural light on your side, try a high shutter speed to capture the action. 6. Look into My Eyes – Looking into someone’s eyes can often tell an untold story or reveal the true emotion of that one moment – try to focus on the eyes of your subject, perhaps by using continued >
25
PHOTOGRAPHY ‘portrait’ mode on your camera phone. You might not want your subject to look at the camera, but if you do, I always get someone else to stand behind me. If I’m on my own, I make strange squeaks or ask my toddler if he can see the ladybird on my nose! 7. Time to Preen – It’s true that editing your photo won’t be able to work miracles, but a good shot can be elevated into something wonderful by editing it. Photography editing software is becoming more affordable as the options increase, so don’t be afraid to shop around. On your phone, there are lots of different Apps to try, such as Handy Photo or Snapseed. I often use Instagram to edit my photos, taking advantage of the filters etc., but not necessarily posting the results. 8. Never Too Much – Back when I first found a love of photography, we would either take the film into a little shop in Bourne or send it away in the post to Triple Print. Either option meant
patiently waiting to see the results, never quite knowing if the photos would come out or not. Nowadays, not only does digital photography give automatically enjoyable results, but once you’ve got your kit, it’s free! If you think you’re taking loads of photos – take even MORE! This will give plenty of choice, even more chance of capturing that one perfect shot, and most importantly, allow you to hone your skills. 9. Get in Front of the Lens – In most families, there is often one adult who takes the majority of the photos; in our house, it’s me! If you are the one who is always behind the camera, it’s so important to make sure you have plenty of photos with you in as well, even if it means reminding a partner, or asking someone else to take them.
“Really good value for money, couldn’t believe how many pictures we got for the price. We did a photo party, all the children loved it” - Kylie Smith
“Great photographer! Took some fantastic pics of my daughter and a terrific guy to boot” - Lee Harrison “Amazing photo shoots and really good value for money. Tom is very patient with the children and that is how you end up with so many fab photos. Highly recommend to anyone!!” - Becky King

10. Candid Camera – For me, the most special photos are not staged but are those natural moments in the life of your family, those that we actually sometimes forget to document. Yes, we should try to take photos of those incredible milestone moments, but it is as important to capture the seemingly mundane parts of our family’s daily life, which are can be just as sentimental for us when looking back. Take photos of a child putting their shoes on, brushing their teeth, an auntie tickling their nephew, a family playing Twister or maybe eating their weekly Sunday roast together – no posing, just being. These personal, all too fleeting, never-again moments are the ones we will look back on and treasure.

‘Their name liveth for evermore’
MEMORIALS
Memorials to West Deeping’s WW1 servicemen As in many villages, West Deeping’s war memorials are in the parish church – St Andrew’s. On the chancel archway is a splendid brass plaque commemorating eight men of the parish ‘who gave their lives for their country in the Great War of 1914-1918’
Finding the history of these memorials was not straightforward– there is no record of them in either the Parish Council minutes or the Vestry minutes. It was a newspaper article from the Lincolnshire Free Press, dated April 1919, that reported a donation to the War Memorial Fund by Mr W.E. Porter (local farmer and owner of West Deeping Manor between 1917 and 1923). It was to be used for ‘A tablet in the Parish Church, First World War Servicemen’s list, restored July 2017. Photo: Paul Bragg with the names inscribed of soldiers from the village who have made the supreme sacrifice, a framed Roll of Honour of all who have served, and the renovation of the reading room’.
‘War Memorial Dedicated’ This was the headline for a newspaper article dated March 1920, when the brass plaque was unveiled and dedicated by the new Bishop of Lincoln.
First World War memorial plaque in St Andrew’s Church, West Deeping Many more men from the village went to war – and came back. The memorial to these servicemen who ‘responded to the call of their King and country …’ is a carefully hand-lettered vellum scroll mounted behind glass in a heavy oak frame. It names 32 men and when they enlisted. This now hangs in the south aisle, not far from the brass plaque. ‘War Memorial Dedicated’
‘… the Bishop drew aside the Union Jack which had screened the memorial tablet and then read the impressive dedicatory prayer, the whole congregation standing reverently with bowed heads.’ The dedications over, Mr W Day of Market Deeping sounded the ‘Last Post’ on the bugle. The Lord Bishop delivered an impressive address after the ceremony. He said … “it was well that the people of future generations should know who were the men of the village who gave their lives for the cause of justice and righteousness”. His Lordship concluded a fine address with the words “May the memory of the sacrifice made by the brave boys whose names are written on the tablet hallow and bless all your village life.”’
Re-dedication To mark the centenary of the end of the war in 2018, St Andrew’s Church will welcome some of the families related to those West Deeping servicemen. There is to be a special service to re-dedicate the newlyrestored Roll of Honour at St Andrew’s Church, West Deeping on Sunday 4th November at 10.30, led by Reverend Stewart Shaw, chaplain of RAF Wittering. A contingent of the Royal British Legion will also take part and all are welcome. The church will be open throughout the weekend with a display of the photographs and information about the village of 100 years ago and the men who went to war. The search is still on for the human stories that will enable us and future generations to understand better the impact this war had on our local community. continued >

MEMORIALS
Restoration of scroll The centenary in 2014 of the start of the war brought several visitors to look for the names of their families, and West Deeping Heritage Group began to research the names on the memorials for a district-wide Roll of Honour, which featured in The Deepings Remember 1914-1918 exhibition four years ago. It was embarrassing that the scroll and its frame looked such a mess! There was an unsightly stain on the vellum, caused by damp and mould, the wooden frame was marked with bat droppings and water stains and the metal fixings were corroding into the wall.
Penny Jenkins is a professional conservator and restorer based in Cambridge. Having removed the backing from the oak frame to reveal the extent of the damage, she discovered pencilled inscriptions on the back of the vellum, which provide the best evidence there is of its fabrication and installation.
West Deeping Heritage Group suggested that the memorial should be restored and moved elsewhere in the church, ideally closer to the other war memorials. Thanks to the efforts of the Churchwarden and with the support of the Parochial Parish Council, the project became possible in spring 2017 when a grant was approved by the War Memorials Trust.
It was undoubtedly the calligrapher who wrote: ‘Emmeline Winterton Radford for the Warham Guild, 28 Margaret Street, Oxford Circus, London W. July 24 1922.’ Further research on the Warham Guild fills in Conservation and restoration the details – it was an association of by Penny Jenkins craftspeople formed in 1912 to provide

Bird Migration - A Natural Miracle
BIRDS
Part One: Explorers and Pioneers by William Bowell The journeys undertaken by birds on their migration from their summer breeding homes to their wintering grounds are incredible. As the nights get longer in October, migration is well underway for birds and our small island is a brilliant place to witness this natural miracle. Why do birds migrate? The urge to migrate to warmer climes isn’t because birds are thrill-seeking sun lovers. Migration is a dangerous undertaking. Goldcrests weigh the same as a 20 pence piece yet fearlessly set out across the North Sea to our shores this month. These are the smallest birds to be recorded in Britain and are a common breeder here, but in October numbers swell as Continental birds arrive, with some remaining and some leaving for southern mainland Europe. On their journey over the sea they will encounter bad weather, predators and almost certain exhaustion. They can only land if they are lucky enough to find a boat or oil rig. The risk is high but the will is stronger. The two main factors that compel birds to migrate are food and weather. Usually the two are connected. A breeding location in the far north can be inhospitable in the winter which will make finding food hard if not impossible. Birds also migrate to find new food sources as a way to preserve their feeding grounds for the next year. A ‘Fall’ of birds Imagine you are standing on the east coast in October. The wind is a stiff north-easterly and there is a threat of rain in the air. Hundreds of miles away in Scandinavia, though, the Norwegian coastline is set fine and clear after a week of westerly winds and rain. This is exactly the set of conditions that, as a birder, I crave. Great White & Little Egret. Little Egret first bred in Britain in 1996 and now is a common sight around the Deepings. Great White Egret first bred in Britain this decade and is now annual in the Deepings. This was taken on Deeping Highbank.
Pied Flycatcher. These small passerines are regularly associated with ‘falls’ on the east coast as they fly down to Africa from their northern breeding grounds.
Why? Because these are also the conditions which will bring millions of ‘common’ birds over to our shores. I have witnessed amazing ‘falls’ on the east coast before, from tens of thousands of goldcrests in Yorkshire to thousands of blackbirds and other thrushes on the north Norfolk coast. Many of these birds are just so exhausted that they show no fear of humans as all they want to do is feed. Many will perish but those who don’t, once they are strong enough once again, will continue to thrive. Other birds that have spent the summer here will also be the move. Swifts, birds which only land to breed (even sleeping on the wing) have long gone, having spent just four or so months in Britain. Swallows and martins, if they haven’t already, will be gathering on wires, having raised several broods of the next generation, getting ready to show them the way to Africa– a migration which could see them cross the barren landscape of the Sahara Desert. The Pioneers and Lost Souls Not all birds that reach our shores mean to get here. These could be blown off course, deranged or lost. These vagrants can also be at the very sharp end of colonising and the changing of a species range. As our climate in Britain gets warmer some birds are moving in from the south, whilst others are finding it too hot to handle and retreating north. continued >

BIRDS Both started out as lost migrants but were trail blazers and now Collared Doves are common everywhere and Little Egrets are breeding as far north as Yorkshire. Great White and Cattle Egrets look to be next with numbers increasing year on year since they first bred ten years ago. Our position on the planet and being an island has meant that we have seen vagrants from around the world. Each year lost birds are found from America, Africa and Asia. Sadly most of these will never find their true migration route. Indeed, it is thought that many of these birds will have something mentally wrong with them, making them fly in the wrong direction. Once again the weather is also an important factor; birds start out to their intended landfall only to hit strong wind currents and are blown

completely off course. Locally, a juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper was blown off course by some serious hurricanes in America in September. Being its first ever migration and being completely inexperienced it ended up on Deeping Lakes. Thankfully, this story probably has a happy ending as waders have been recorded flying non-stop from North America to Argentina, so a trip back across the Atlantic isn’t too much of a stretch.
Arctic Tern. These amazing migrants breed on islands off northern England and Scotland as well as further north and fly all the way down to the Antarctic for the winter.
Next month BIRD MIGRATION- A NATURAL MIRACLE Part Two: Winter visitors from the North. When home feels best As it says in the inscription on the stone cottage opposite Crowland Abbey ‘East or West, Home is Best’. And that is certainly the conclusion that some people come to as they get older and are no longer as mobile as they once were. Of course, hindsight is always a wonderful thing and many very elderly people will wish that they converted an area downstairs into a wet room before the task seems insurmountable. But companies such as specialist installers AHM will make sure that you receive all the advice necessary not only to create a safe but also a stylish space at an affordable price. They are also able to advise on any available government grants and provide an initial free survey and no-obligation quote. A garden is often a tranquil place of joy and beauty but it can also be a labour of love and when mobility is impaired can be a cause for unnecessary concern. The far-sighted amongst us will have anticipated this and created some easily tended raised beds and planted shrubs instead of labourintensive herbaceous blooms. The District Council-provided green bin is a boon for those wanting to get rid of green waste but unable to travel to the tip. There are a number of reliable gardeners available locally who will call regularly and this is the key to keeping the garden under control. They also love a cup of tea and a biscuit and can turn their hands to other little jobs like changing a light bulb or winding a clock! There are a number of firms locally who provide home care and the website of the Care Quality Commission will give a guide to their performance when you are selecting this kind of care for your loved ones.
CARE AT HOME
It is important to ensure that the carers are monitoring diet, as this is the first thing that can be forgotten when an elderly person is at home and for the first time in their lives not sharing a meal with others. Companies such as Wiltshire Farm Foods, who provide quality frozen meals free to your door provide an essential component in a care at home package. They can be paid by cash or cheque on delivery or it is possible to order online for friends or family. Another friendly face to knock on the door and break what can be the monotony of being at home alone. And that is where pets come in! Just when we have time to give the cat, dog or budgie the endless attention they love so often we give them up, fearful of not being able to look after them. Now, with vets such as Mark the Home Vet and a number of local dog walkers, your pet can become a central part of your life! But often we crave human company and this is Mark the Home Vet where we are so lucky 01780 678876 in the Deepings to have Age Concern who will not only take you door to door shopping but will put your purchases away for you too. They also provide a Sunday Club, take you to the Library and offer a befriending service amongst a whole panoply of treats! Many of us take advantage of a mobile hairdresser and beautician for the best part of our lives but now a friendly face who will come to wash and style your hair or give you a manicure is a must have as part of your care at home services. Locally, Gillian Beach is a foot healthcare practitioner who is happy to visit you in your own home. Just as we are coming into the dark nights and colder weather it is important for all of us to look out for elderly neighbours who are not as mobile as they once were; a kind word and a wave can make all the difference!

Five Great Family Meals for Under a Fiver The weather’s getting chilly and the summer clothes are packed away for another year – in Autumn we return with pleasure to comforting foods. And it’s easy to cook family meals on a tight budget in this area as we have many farms selling vegetables and sacks of potatoes, and great local butchers selling top quality meat at excellent prices. Here are just 5 classic British recipes that can easily be made for a family of 4-5 for under £1 a head. Laranja by C&J
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! Roast a medium chicken (approx 2kg) in the centre of the oven at 190C for 20 minutes per lb (450g) plus 1020 minutes extra – around 2 hours. No extra fat is needed, but the chicken benefits from salt and pepper and being basted with its own fat 3-4 times during cooking. A roast chicken can be turned into many meals – chicken soup, chicken pot pie, chicken pasta bake, chicken curry..............or at least the leftovers can!! However, a roast chicken dinner with roast potatoes, sage and onion stuffing, vegetables and gravy is hard to beat.

Beef In Ale 2 medium onions Garlic (optional) 2 sticks celery (optional) 2 carrots (optional) 8 mushrooms (optional) 500g Stewing beef
Flour 500ml ale or stout 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes Seasoning 2 bay leaves
In a large, heavy-based pan fry the onions and garlic for a few minutes in oil then add whichever vegetables you want and cook for a further 5 minutes. Add the beef, brown and then add the flour and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and then either put in a low oven (120C) for 3-4 hours or transfer to a slow cooker and cook on low for 5-6 hours. Thicken the gravy with cornflour mixed with water if needed. Make the mixture into a pie if you wish, add dumplings or just serve over buttery mash.
Toad in the Hole 8 Sausages 285ml milk 115g plain flour 3 large eggs Seasoning Heat your oven to 220C. Put the sausages in an ovenproof dish with some oil and cook in the oven for 10 minutes. Whisk the remaining ingredients into a batter and pour over the sausages, then put the dish back in the oven and DO NOT TOUCH for 20 minutes. Serve with mash, peas and gravy.
Fish & Chips 500g firm white fish fillets cut into strips. 2 eggs, beaten Plain flour Breadcrumbs 1kg potatoes Sunflower oil Pat the fish dry with a paper towel, then dip each piece first in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. When all are done they can either be shallow fried or baked in a hot oven (200C) for 15 mins. For the chips, peel and cut the potatoes into evenly-sized chunky chips. Bring to the boil in a pan of salted water then drain and allow to sit in a colander for 5 minutes while all the steam dissipates. Put onto baking trays and brush all over with oil and bake in a hot oven (200C) until golden and crisp, turning over after around 20 minutes. (Variation: Use chicken breast the same way as the fish for home-made chicken nuggets.)
Shepherd’s Pie 1 large onion 2-3 medium carrots 500g frozen lamb mince 2 tbsp tomato puree 500ml beef stock Seasoning 900g potatoes Chop and fry the onion and carrots in a pan with some oil for 2 minutes (you can add some garlic here if you wish!), then add the mince and continue to fry until brown, spooning out any excess fat. Add the tomato puree and cook for 2 further minutes before adding the stock and seasoning (some chopped or dried mint at this point is lovely) and simmer for 40 minutes, with a lid over the top for the first 20 minutes. In the meantime, make your mash. When both the mince and mash are ready, put the mince into an ovenproof dish with the mash on top and ruffle the mash with a fork, then bake at 180C (160C fan) for around 25 minutes.

It was a white, misty, shadowy outline.” Dave isn’t the only one who has seen the phantom figure; Crew Manager Tim Wright had a similar spooky experience one evening. In the kitchen, Tim had his back turned to an open serving hatch – and he began to feel that something was wrong. He said: “I suddenly felt coldness around me and every hair on my body stood up on end. Whatever was stood on my right-hand side through the serving hatch wanted me to turn around. I didn’t look, but as I left, the cold presence in the kitchen followed me all the way to the exit.” Tim, who has served in the military and admits he is not easily scared, said he is convinced that the presence ‘was not of this world.’ He added: “I have tried to look at what happened rationally, and I am convinced without a doubt that I was not alone.” But it’s not the first time the ghost has made its presence known at the station.
