A new record was set at the Deepings Library this year when over 180 children completed six books or more over the holidays as part of the Summer Reading Scheme. This is a tremendous achievement for a community which who less than a handful of years ago nearly lost the Library which they now hold so dear. Not only is this due to the band of volunteers headed up by Co-ordinators Louisa Crowson and Jo Crawford assisted by a management team but also by the tremendous support given to the children by their parents and families. In turbulent times it is not always easy to offer the routine of a regular visit to the Library but it is one that will stay with these children for a lifetime giving them fond memories which will ground them in the future - together we can work to offer our children the best Deeping childhood. The first joint summer camp with Apache Cubs and Odin Scouts was held at Gilwell Park in August. The crew participated in archery, climbing activities, 3G swing, raft building, pedal go-karts and the dreaded leap of faith! Backwoods cooking was one of the highlights, with everyone cooking their own meals, including Akelas special campfire chocolate oranges, followed by a campfire display of sketches, singing and toasting marshmallows. This year marked the 100th birthday of Gilwell celebrated by completing the heritage trail and learning about the history of Scouting on the site.

The Green School
remembered by Margaret McKay
From 1851 to 1967 the infants’ school of Market Deeping was the stone building on the opposite side of the road from St Guthlac’s, in Church Street. It was erected and opened firstly for the little girls of the village, but in 1874 the building was enlarged to include infant boys. Many people today are unaware of the fact that it was only in the second half of the 19th century that schooling for all children between the ages of five and thirteen was made compulsory by legislation (the first education act being the Forster Education Act of 1870). Those private individuals who initiated and funded schools before the state found it necessary to become involved in educating its citizens were really great benefactors to their local communities; and the benefactors in Market Deeping were the Reverend William Hildyard, who donated the land on which the school was built, and two generous and far-sighted women, Mary Wensor and Elizabeth Molecey. Both these women were concerned about and active in promoting the cause of education for girls in particular. Mary Wensor left £400 (the equivalent of many thousands today) in her will for the building of the school and Elizabeth Molecey left £200 in trust towards its upkeep. Sadly neither of these women lived to see the opening of the school the building of which they had chiefly helped to finance.
At first the curriculum consisted of the very basic ’3 Rs’, that is Reading, Writing and Arithmetic and elementary needlecraft, (while the Green School remained a school for small girls only.) Other subjects, such as History and Geography, were added in the first decades of the 20th century. The Boys Endowed School, a short distance away along Church Street, eventually became the Junior School for both boys and girls. Even after the state had become involved in the provision of primary education the school suffered from financial shortfalls and for years it was necessary to charge parents twopence a week for each child enrolled in the school – but never more than sixpence per family, however many children a single family had in the school at the same time. Remembe,r these were the days of large families – there being no very effective form of contraception; at the same time it was common to lose one or more infants as a result of any one of a myriad of childhood diseases for which there was then no cure. The school seems always to have been staffed by female teachers and female Head mistresses. At a time when traditional roles for the sexes were still the norm, then it was expected that any teacher who married would resign her professional post and take up an entirely domestic one, the assumption being that within a relatively short time she would be likely to become a mother with all the childcaring responsibilities that that entailed; and there were no disposable nappies nor scientifically manufactured milk substitutes for mothers with nursing problems available then. If you hadn’t any domestic servants of your own then rearing a baby through the first year of life was much harder work than it is today, and the chances of losing the baby, when there was no modern medicine, were much, much higher. Teachers who did not marry often stayed in their posts for many years, even several decades, so it was not unusual for a teacher to have had in her classes not just several siblings from the same family but even several generations of the same family: another example of how much more closely knit many communities were 50 or more years ago.

Anyone still living locally who attended the Green School in the 1940s or 1950s will remember the Head mistress of those years as the tall and quite regal Miss Marjorie Moppet. Miss Moppet had been trained as a teacher at Lincoln Training College and in July 1941, in wartime Britain, she succeeded Mrs William Johnson as Head mistress. As well as being Head mistress Marjorie Moppet taught the older juniors at the Endowed school in Church Street. The teacher of the infants, by the time I entered the Green School in April 1949, was the imposing, not to say formidable Mrs Howitt. The teacher of the seven- to eightyear-olds was Mrs Pratt. The enlarged Green School had two classrooms. There was the back Infants’ room and the front seven- to eight-year-olds big room; the two rooms were separated by a big sliding room divider which one old pupil remembers could be kept opened, or partly opened, in winter to enable the heat from the stove in the front room to percolate through to the back, infants room. My memory is that there was also a stove in the middle of the back infants’ room – but memory is becoming a treacherous thing so I stand to be corrected on that. In regard to the physical
conditions at the school in the early 1950s, I cannot remember feeling cold in the classroom in winter but I can remember suffering from chilblains. Does anyone under the age of 40 now know what a chilblain was!? School started in the morning with a handbell being rung by one of the teachers in the playground and the children would immediately line up with their class and then file into their assigned classroom, either the infants or the seniors. The Infants’ room was further subdivided into three different groups of desks since, at that time you could begin school in any one of the three terms of the school year. For me that meant I began after Easter, in April, since my fifth birthday would be two months later in June. My memories of that first term are few: playing with plasticine and, I think, drawing or trying to write with white chalk on slates. By the time you moved into the ‘big’ room at age six and a half or seven, most had mastered elementary reading and some writing. I don’t remember there ever being much noise in either classroom. Mrs Howitt was certainly a good disciplinarian and I believe Mrs Pratt was too. In the seniors’ ‘big’ room there were, in my day, very big posters pinned up on every wall containing the multiplication tables, from continued >

two times to twelve. We learnt the multiplication tables by chanting them aloud, in unison, learning, I think, a new one each week. I have to say that in all my years of schooling this has been the most useful element of arithmetic I ever learnt and, in my subsequent 70 years the multiplication tables continue to be useful to me on a daily basis! So, hurrah for that. I hope they are still being taught because it was good training for the brain, and, like riding a bike, or swimming, once learnt you hopefully never forget.
In the 1950s it was still usual for most married women with dependant children to be full time housewives – and a lot of heavy work there was to be done at home too, in the days before labour saving machines – so most, if not all, the village children went home for lunch (we called it dinner in those days) and then went back to school for the afternoon session. I think we finished school in the afternoon at about 3.30pm. One fellow pupil from that time thinks there was provision for children who couldn’t go home at ‘dinner’time to have sandwiches in the upper room of the White Horse pub in Church Street. Can anyone confirm this? Comments will be welcomed!
There was a mid morning break ‘playtime’ when we could go outside and run around but, first you had your third of a pint bottle of milk. School milk for all primary school children had been introduced during wartime when there was still widespread malnutrition among some sections of the population, especially in the poorer parts of inner cities, and during WWII there were food shortages for almost everyone (no obesity problems then). Thus crates of milk, in small third of a pint bottles, were delivered to all primary schools every morning. You had to drink your milk before you could go out to play – and I seem to remember that we were l-r back row; J Wass, K Jones, I Haves, W Johnson, M Fisher, Pat Greenfield, B Boon, C Allam. Each child, like the siblings in a family, has different specific memories from their childhood and school. It would be interesting to hear what others who attended the Green School, and the Junior school in Church Street, remember of their time there. We would like to follow up this short account of the Market Deeping village schools with reminiscences from old pupils. Please send your reminiscences to the editors of IRBID, with your name, and tell us the years you attended the Green School. Perhaps it’s time for a new school photo! to Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and playing in Churches and Cathedrals throughout the UK. Like a lamb returning to the fold, Abi describes the experience as ‘finding herself ’ at the symphony orchestra with like minded people - this was definitely her milieu. Geography, Music and Art were the trio of subjects studied at A level and on the completion of her course in 2015 Abigail packed up her bags and left Deeping for Greenwich - London, where she was to study at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire. With alumni including John Powell the composer of the latest Star Wars film, this represented a daunting prospect for this diminutive Deeping student. But she embraced her studies with all the enthusiasm which had stayed with her since her Linchfield days. Under the expert tuition of renowned flute teacher Anna Pope, Abigail practised for four hours a day in her first year extending to six hours a day in her 3rd and 4th years. Meanwhile she lapped up the culture and the diversity of city life not for her a flat white it will be a Chai Latte please! Abigail struck up an enduring friendship in her first year at College with Isabel Kent an oboe player from Carlisle, an alumni of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. The pair set up a flute, oboe and piano trio playing together across London including Southwark Cathedral. Abigail joined the King’s College London Symphony Orchestra in her second year touring Spain and Germany. Fighting back her nerves which can leave her mouth dry, the antidote for which is practice, practice, practice - she found they completely disappear when caught up in Image: Chris Halley
Glittering occasions in magnificent buildings in the company of a well rehearsed orchestra preferably with a Mozart flute concerto in the programme is to Abigail Fletcher the perfect day at the office! But it was not long ago when this Deeping girl was sat in lessons at Linchfield Primary School and Mr Astle (Philip) popped his head round her classroom door to ask what was the highest note she could play on the flute (‘A! Mr Astle‘) and she would be whisked off to play in the school orchestra! But this was no fleeting passion. Abigail had aspired to play the flute when as a very small child she had seen someone play and it had captured her imagination - she contented herself though with the recorder and then the pan pipes until in Year 5 she could play through the head joint of the flute and was accepted first into Mrs Westons class and then Miss Blanchard‘s. At home father Nick would help with her understanding of rhythm as he accompanied her with her practice every evening after work, but soon her talent outstripped his knowledge. Under the tuition of Mrs Wright at the Deepings School, Abigail was encouraged to audition for the Lincolnshire Youth Concert Orchestra and after two years went onto successfully audition for the Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsing with the orchestra every five weeks. Abigail made firm friends, travelling
the music as she especially remembers being on one memorable occasion when playing Scherazade by Rimsky Korsakov. Having heard her play at a summer school in 2017, the pre-eminent flautist Professor Robert Winn invited Abigail to complete her degree in Cologne where he teaches. But loyal to Trinity Laban, Abigail instead took her Erasmus term in Cologne joining Robert Winn’s class - it was too good an opportunity to miss as Robert Winn is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and was the principal flautist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 1985-1997. Apart from his wide experience in classical music he has played on many Hollywood movies such as The Lord of the Rings, Notting Hill, The English Patient and many more. So the perfect tutor for aspiring Abigail! In spite of her initial nervousness, Abigail flourished in Germany. Returning to the UK Abigail’s hard work was rewarded when she graduated with a first class degree in music. The climax of the celebrations of her four years at Trinity was playing with the Trinity Laban Orchestra in London’s Cadogan Hall, home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - she is now set to return to the German city to complete her two year MA course with Robert Winn. Not only a musician, Abigail is a talented artist recently painting a trompe d’oiel feature wall for her parents. Grateful for the financial support that this budding musician received from Deeping St James United Charities, Abigail and Isabel supported on the piano by Director of Music at the Priory Church, Chris Brown recently gave a recital at the Priory Church where she played for many of those that had taught her during her school years. Not a dry eye in the house and all wishing her bon chance!

Bats in the Deepings
Other bat species have been recorded too, but much less frequently. Daubenton’s bats feed on insects emerging from the water, and roost in trees and bridges, not houses; whiskered bats have been recorded from one of the churches – and what was a female Natterer’s bat doing grounded in a Deeping St James garden last year? It is a much less common bat, showing how much we still don’t know.
Are there any bats in the Deepings? Many people will say yes – but how much do you know about them? Bats first became protected in 1981, but why? At that point they were still classed as messy vermin to be exterminated at all cost, until some naturalists had started to notice they were disappearing, and discovered that, amongst other things, highly toxic timber treatments – now all banned – were wiping them out.
The legal bits are important. Bats and their roosts are protected from harm and destruction throughout the year, whether in residence or not, because they return to the same roost – or series of roosts - year after year; we have some brown longeared roost records going back 60 years. But what this doesn’t mean is that if you have a bat roost you can’t have any work done on your house – nothing could be further from the truth. What it does mean is that you must seek advice from Natural England, the government’s conservation body, before any work is carried out, since timing of work is critical. Details below.
Image: Hugh Clark
Fast forward nearly 40 years, and thanks to a great deal of publicity, some excellent television programmes, a further tightening of the law in 2001, and a great deal of research, we now know a lot more about bats, learning that they are not remotely related to rats and mice; that they need the safety and warmth of our houses to have their single babies in the summer and for temporary roosts at other times; that they do absolutely no damage (so wires are safe!); that they get through vast numbers of insects from spring through to autumn; that they don’t get caught in your hair; and that they rarely roost in derelict buildings!
Lincolnshire Bat group was set up in the mid 80s and has been going ever since. We do surveys, bat rescue, shows and events. And of course, record bats. If you see bats in your garden, have a bat roost, want or need information (please don’t be shy – we’re here to help!) please get in touch via info@lincsbatgroup.co.uk or see our websitewww.lincsbatgroup.co.uk. Or phone me on 01775 766286. Annette Faulkner, Recorder, LIncs Bat Group Natural England can be contacted via the Bat Conservation Trust, who have the administration contract, on 0345 1300 228/ info@bats.org.uk. Website www.bats.org.uk
There are two factors that make the Deepings an important place for bats: one is the river and the other is houses, frequently post-1960s, and gardens.
Image: Hugh Clark
The River Welland is where they end up, feeding on the rich supply of insects emerging from the water, but to get there many of them work their way through gardens, spending 10-15 minutes backwards and forwards between several gardens, hoovering up the available insects before moving on. The majority of bats that people see will be pipistrelles, and they will be roosting round the edges of houses, tucked away, sometimes unknown and unseen, under the eaves, under gaps under tiles, under lead flashing round chimneys and so on. Brown long-eared bats, on the other hand, roost in the roof voids of older properties, and although there are plenty of older properties in the Deepings we only have a tiny number of records – mouse droppings in an old roof space aren’t necessarily from mice!

What a typically English sound
BELL RINGING
Keith Brown, Deputy Ringing Master and Steeplekeeper, St Guthlac’s Parish Church
The sound of church bells is such a typically English sound. For centuries church bells have called people to church and have been rung in celebration of special occasions, in remembrance and to mark special events. Did you know that bellringing is a team activity that stimulates and exercises the brain and the body? It is a fact that the old name for ringing is ‘the exercise’ and ringing is certainly cheaper than joining a gym. Many consider ringing to be their contribution to church life, others do it for the pure pleasure it brings. There has been an established band of bell ringers at Market Deeping since the bells were first hung in the tower in 1766. Regular recruitment is crucial to our ability to keep the bells ringing. We will start to train our next group of learners during October this year. Might you be interested in learning? As a teenager becoming a bellringer had never entered my head. My elder brother got involved firstly and asked if I would like to try it. Under his guidance I learnt to ring. It was slow at first but by the time I was 16 I was travelling around my local area in Essex ringing at many different churches on practice nights and going on outings further afield at weekends and bank holidays. Both then and now there is a good social side to ringing and much fun to be had; this is how I met my wife who also rings at St Guthlac’s. After we married, we moved to different areas in the country whilst I progressed through my career as a lawyer. One of the great things about ringing is that you are welcomed at any tower and as we have moved around and worked away from home it has provided a ready group of friends with a common interest. Our children came along but wherever we lived we easily found friends through ringing, which has been a central strand throughout our life together. We now live within the sound of St Guthlac’s bells in Halfleet and regularly ring at churches and cathedrals throughout the area including Peterborough Cathedral. Here at St Guthlac’s in Market Deeping we have a fine ring of eight bells. The heaviest is nearly ¾ of a ton (the weight of a Formula 1 car) but surprisingly it
doesn’t need a lot of muscle power to be able to ring it, it’s all in the technique. The heaviest six bells were cast in 1766 and two new lighter bells were added in 1998. The bells are rung regularly on Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings and on Thursday practice nights. They are also rung for weddings and other special occasions. As I mentioned earlier to keep the bells of Market Deeping ringing regularly we need a steady flow of people of all ages to learn a new skill that will help to keep a tradition alive. Our last recruitment drive was in February 2018 when the aim was for our new recruits to ring for the Armistice 100 commemorations in November of that year. We are fortunate that three of our learners from that time continue to enjoy the challenge of learning. One recently said to me, ‘We love our new hobby and the friends we have made.’ We are looking for new ringers from aged 10 upwards. Learners of all ages are welcomed but, rather like riding a bike, it is easier to learn when younger! In this short article I hope I have sparked an interest. There is much more to show you. That is why we are holding an open day on Saturday 12th October. Please see the notice on page 41 giving all the details. If possible, please contact me in advance to make sure we have enough experienced ringers available on the day so that we can make the best use of our time together. Reflections of Molecey Mill
BRIDGET RILEY
Artist Bridget Riley is inspired by the surroundings of her bucolic youth, as discovered by Graham Magee The joy of growing up in the Deepings won’t be lost on anyone who is lucky enough to have that idyllic life experience. A young life spent in the Deepings is one to treasure, surrounded by rivers and streams, spending endless days splashing about, boating or fishing, with fields of golden corn stretching away as far as your imagination can take you to distant horizons. All these fields and streams are sheltered by trees, woods and copses for shady secret denbuilding or long summer walks.
Louise and Bridget on the footbridge at Molecey
A recent discovery in the Deepings is of just such a country experience and one which went on to spark in this particular young lady a lifetime spent in the development of the modern British art world. Bridget Riley was born in Forest Hill, South London in April 1931, a little later moving to Boston, Lincolnshire, with her family. Little did they realise that war was just around the corner! With the fear of bombing, mother and daughters were bundled off to the relative safety of Cornwall. Bridget’s father started military service in the army and went missing in action, only to return at the end of the war from a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. The war years spent in Cornwall were to have an inspirational effect on Bridget’s life. The visual beauty of granite cliffs and the broad sweep of seaside bays allowed the young Bridget freedom to explore. The impact of nature, light and landscape was profound and this continued back in the Deepings when the family returned. In 1950, at the age of 19, Bridget’s parents, now reunited, returned to Lincolnshire, buying Molecey House and its derelict mill from the Fullard family. The Fullards had been resident at the mill since 1896, when the last Molecey had left. Now the
Rileys modernised their home, adding internal bathrooms and installing electricity. But the restful calm of post-war rural Lincolnshire remained; water lapped the stone walls of the old house and mill, and in spite of the renovations time seemed to stand still. The impact of the water around the house continues to create a unique and impactful canvas as dapples of light dance across the ceilings and throw pools of light across the floor. These inspirational effects were not lost on young Bridget. She found solace in drawing and painting portraits of her family in and around Molecey House. As she developed her
semi-impressionist artistic skills she became more and more certain that her future was as an artist. She studied at Goldsmiths’ College, London from 1949-52 and then at the Royal College of Art from 1952-55. Around 1958 she started to paint, using the technique known as pointillism, and gradually her work began to use the effects of optical phenomena. Bridget began working in the ‘Op-Art’ movement long before it was named as an official artistic genre. She is best known for her black-and-white works from the 1960s that helped inspire this new style of contemporary art. continued >
29
BRIDGET RILEY Later, vibrant colours were to take over from the monochrome Op-Art works of the early years. Bridget taught children for a short while in the early 1960s but then with her work increasingly in demand she went on to stage group and solo exhibitions which culminated in winning an International Painting Prize at the Venice Biennale of 1968, a decade after leaving Molecey. A series of works inspired by the patterns of light created by the reflections of water at Molecey came in the early 1970s, including work entitled Rill and Molecey. If you want to connect a local Deepings’ landmark to the work of a major British artist then a major retrospective exhibition devoted to the work of Bridget Riley might be just for you. Open from 23 October until 26 January at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, London, this comprehensive exhibition is the first large-scale survey of Riley’s work to be held in the UK for 16 years. The exhibition looks closely at the origins of Riley’s work and features the artist’s iconic black-and-white paintings of the 1960s, early representational paintings, expansive canvases in colour and recent wall paintings, as well as studies and preparatory material. Spanning 70 years of Riley’s work, the exhibition offers visitors from the Deepings an insight into one of the most important artists of our time and allows us to soak up the influence of the Molecey years! Bridget Riley’s authorised new biography of her early years which includes her time at Molecey has just been released. Entitled Bridget Riley A Very Very Person by Paul Moorhouse available from your local library or bookshop.

More and more parents are realising how important it is for their whole family to connect with nature on a daily basis. Children who spend time playing outdoors in all weathers, are not only physically healthier, but they are able to develop their resilience and problem solving skills because of being faced with the elements and unpredictable environments.
With Autumn fast approaching it’s time to dig out the wellies and look forward to some different adventures. Our favourite place to visit are the woods, not only are they free but the sounds and colours are the perfect backdrop to any adventure, we especially love the woods when the rain is falling, the noise of the drips on the leaves and the birds chirping are magically.
The 1000 Hours Outside East of England Community hopes to provide a platform for local families to support each other to spend an average of 3 hours a day outdoors, as the heady Summer days begin to dissolve into the darker, colder months ahead. Daily posts include tips on how to dress, essentials to take with you and where to go. This challenge might seem a little daunting in the Autumn and Winter months, but there are tricks to making time outdoors more successful. Often it is us parents that need a bit more of nudge to venture out - my son, for one, never seems to feel the cold! I asked three local mums to share their thoughts about how they approach spending time outside as the temperatures fall and the weather becomes less reliable:
Mary Sammons
Kitty loves to collect stones and feathers and make houses for her toys, finding bugs always adds a thrill to her adventures. We are part of a baby bushcraft group based up at Fineshade, we meet every other Friday and it really does encourage me to get and about as well as teaching us both a lot about the wildlife around us, I’ve met some lovely parents, we get to take part in brilliant factual activities and there’s even hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows around a campfire! My top tips for getting out and about in the Autumn months are be prepared for rapid weather changes! Kitty has a brilliant fleece lined suit and some lovely warm welly socks, I have some wellies and waterproof trousers (if only I could get away with a fleece lined suit!) that way I can jump in puddles alongside Kitty, and there’s nothing better than finding a good puddle to jump in!
With the ‘ber’ months upon us it’s time to get prepared for colder, windier, wetter days. I try to plan an activity outdoors with my children on a daily basis, so now I’m currently digging out waterproofs and wellies, the key is to be organised, no easy task with 4 children. Simple activities that my whole family can enjoy like splashing in puddles (I’m normally the first one in) trips to the park and winter picnics with a flask of something hot to warm us up. My gran always said there’s no such thing as inappropriate weather only inappropriate clothing and as long as everyone is dry and warm they’re happy to have lots of fun. I feel that for my children to respect the world they need to be connected to it, have memories of changing seasons, the joy of grass on their feet and snow in their hair. Risky play is also something I feel my children need to be exposed to as part of their everyday and a huge part of this happens outside in all weathers. It promotes self confidence, decision making, evaluating their own personal risk and ability and they are so very good at knowing and understanding their limits. With my eldest (now 21) I wasn’t very good at this, I tried but I was so scared of the what ifs…. My two youngest have taught me that the benefits of risky play far outweigh the what ifs…. continued >

KIDS
Hannah Pattison Some of our best times outdoors have been whilst playing in the variety of weather our British winter affords. Two things are key to our enjoyment; the right clothing and enough food! Before leaving the house we spend a while getting kitted up. After weeks spent sitting in the woods through the winter for a few years now - I’ve found it’s all about the layers! We start with a thermal base layer. Merino wool thermals are by far the warmest and longest lasting worth the extra pennies. Then a middle layer/s of fleecey or woolly material clothing -like lined jogging bottoms and a knitted jumper with high neck or lightweight scarf. Finally ski jacket and waterproof trousers on top. I’ve always got outer layers a couple of sizes up to allow room for the layers, the bonus is they last a couple of winters too! Two pairs of woolly socks with boots that are waterproof but ideally are lined with fleece too- we like the ‘Baby bogs’ brand. Wellies are fine when it’s not too cold but
36
they’re not great for climbing and toes get cold quickly in them too. If they are the only option then making sure they’re roomy enough for layers of trapped air is the trick. All these clothing types are available second hand online so it needn’t be expensive for you or the planet! No need to wash the outer layer that gets the most muddy either - just a quick wipe down with a cloth is enough. Hats and gloves on the coldest days of course. Then it’s a really good litmus test - usually our cores are so warm that we find we don’t need them! My daughter is normally shedding her outer layers pretty soon anyway as she’s so active in nature! I’ve normally got my hands round a warm cup of tea from my thermos flask too. Snacking little and often when you’re outside for several hours in a row in winter works best. We find that ‘good’ fatty foods; cheese, nuts, nut butter, boiled egg and soups are most comforting too. I’m looking forward to getting outdoors in nature this winter once more for more adventures in the fog, frost, rain and snow.

5 great ways
What could be more local than buying your bread from the baker in the village ? We are very lucky to have an independent baker still going strong in Church Street, Deeping St James. Nothing better than a walk to the bakers on a Saturday morning, bread and scones and cakes made from flour from the local mill at Soham in Cambridgeshire, wrapped in good old fashioned paper bags or straight into your ‘Id Rather Be in Deeping’ shopping bag if you’d prefer! All baked in years and years-old coal fired ovens delivered by local merchants and sometimes local honey too. Not to mention doughnuts like they used to be … Clive is not into plastic - his baking equipment is mostly tins, wood and stoneware used by generations of bakers before him. Long may it continue to be the case.
Vine House Farm stock a wide range of Ecover cleaning products including phosphate-free washing powder to fab ranges of plant-based home cleaning products. They offer a refill service for their laundry liquid and washing up liquid the bottles of which are made of recycled plastic and are recyclable too! But the design is so cool my guess is you’ll want to refill and keep it! 38
to reduce plastic use
It’s one of the easiest ways to reduce your use of plastic - have your milk delivered in glass bottles - put the bottles out when empty and they will be collected, sterilised and used again. Milk & More who deliver here in Deeping also supply a variety of juices in glass bottles too! Not only a great plastic buster but a great way to keep an old tradition alive! www.milkandmore.co.uk/
Outdoor catering for all events with home grown beef & lamb and Lincs quality pork.
This season’s lamb from the farm now available! Wondering what to do with the endless plastic buckets in which fat balls are supplied? Take them along to Kennedy Wild Bird Foods in Station Road Deeping St James, and fill them up with your bird seed and fat balls there – a great selection, friendly personal service and an end to the mountain of plastic! Also available are loose dog treats to fill up your containers!
And so to the market for an outdoor treat. Great atmosphere, mostly local fruit and veg, again straight into your bag and no wrapping or plastic trays, or perhaps browse once read paperbacks from the occasional library stall or plants grown at our two local nurseries, Swine’s Meadow and Dave’s Fuchsias. Finish up with a coffee of course (in a cup, please, or your own takeaway cup) from The Stage or Lilli’s perhaps? Allotments! Now is the time of year to take on a new allotment. Enjoy the outdoor exercise and the taste of truly organic produce. Recycle the rainwater on your plot (a condition of DSJ allotment society’s membership) , make compost bins for shredded paper and tea/coffee bags etc and keep on re using those plastic seed trays rather than buying new . Or use cardboard containers like egg boxes instead for seedlings. The allotments are a place where we pass on surplus plants and produce and try to reduce unnecessary waste if we can.
