Cycling: Deeping to Brighton
Challenging! The word to describe the recent feat of Deepings Cyclists who rode to Brighton for a variety of charities. Leaving the Spin Room Studio early on 24th July, the cyclists faced torrential rain and horrific conditions for the first 110 miles of their journey. Making it safe and sound to the Premier Inn Hotel at Tower Bridge, they had a much welcome organised lunch which helped them warm up but they still had to get back on their bikes and carry on through London in the relentless rain. Bad though they were, the conditions made this days ride very memorable. The whole team were back within ten hours for a hot shower and a meal of which every mouthful was savoured! The final days riding started at 8am. The sun was shining as all 54 riders set off through the busy streets of London and headed towards Brighton. The ride was only 64 miles but these took just as long as the 110 the day before as they were a little hilly!! Hills and sunshine create very different exhausting ride conditions and they found it tough riding on a very undulating course to the lunch stop only 9 miles from Brighton Pier. Lunch was amazing; fresh bread, cheeses, soup, fajitas, salad, pate, flap jacks and cake.. brilliant.. After lunch there was a short 4 mile ride to the final climb before the 6 miles downhill ride into Brighton!! The final climb was none other than Ditchling Beacon! A 1.5 mile hill climb with an average gradient of 8%... Some parts as steep as 12%.... Very tough but very enjoyable.. And what a sense of achievement when the top was finally reached! There was blood, sweat and tears... Emotional... Down into Brighton through bustling streets avoiding the traffic.. The journey was nearly over.. down the final slope and there was the pier!!! Omg they had done it and the families were there cheering and clapping, screaming and shouting as the riders approached the final few metres...What a few days it had been... More tears... And then more tears... Says organiser Claire Cross, “I can honestly say that everyone involved in this trip was amazing and through the wind, rain, hills and all those miles I feel very privileged to have seen every one reach their goals and be part of the active4ever dream.”

A classic family dynasty at the hearth of Deeping
It was always Terry’s dream to have a business of his own. A carpenter by trade, he was one of six children from a Lincolnshire farming family. Determined to make good, he spent his early years as a builder eventually working at Parker Fireplaces of Holbeach, joined by his two sons, Simon and Tim on leaving The Deepings school,
In 1986 the dream was realised when Terry, Simon and Tim worked at night to build their own business, manufacturing and fitting fireplaces from a small unit on Northfields Industrial Estate, where the business owns much larger units today. Wife Ann supported from the outset and later joined by daughter, Emma.
Now Office Manager, Emma explains ‘We have been working in the Deepings for a generation, customers that we had initially return to us as they move house or decide to change the style of their home to purchase a new fireplace because of the high quality products and excellent service we provide. We have been in the fortunate position that the clientele we have locally have responded well to the bespoke service that we offer. Customers often visit our showrooms with tape measures in hand and are pleasantly surprised to find its unnecessary because we can make any of the fireplaces any size, in any material, to suit a large range of gas fires, electric fires or stoves.
Classic offer a unique service, in that their range of fireplaces in marble, stone and wood are manufactured on the premises. From the initial visit to the showroom, to the design and turbocad drawing of how the final installation will appear, the company are with their customers all the way. They remove the existing fireplace and offer an after-sales service as well. With seven staff in total, Tim is head of sales and Simon in charge of manufacturing and installation.
The company are also proud to supply Chesney’s of London, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of luxury fireplaces and are often called upon to work for interior designers in the capital and closer to home for Hunters Interiors of Stamford. They have worked for the McCorquodale’s at Great Ponton and at the Exton Park Estate in Rutland for Lady Campden and are the supplier of choice for Alston Country Homes. Delighted to be asked to feature in ITV’s ‘60 Minute Makeover’ they were pleased with the smooth and quick installation of their fire and surround but were less impressed with other parts of the transformation which were less than complete after an hour!
‘Unfortunately we do hear horror stories regarding dangerous installations but we have a programme of rigorous HETAS & Gas safe training and keep abreast of all regulations and updates’ explains Emma, ‘we are particularly pleased to have recently passed the ‘Buy with confidence’ scheme introduced by Trading Standards which has exacting criteria. It is important to us to be able to offer our clients the best advice on flue systems and stoves, still very popular and high efficiency gas fires, which help our customers save money today.’
With Simon, Tim & Emma now at the helm & young grandsons already showing a keen interest in this family business, Terry and Ann can look forward to their retirement with their family business in capable hands.
