Deepings Fire Station
FEATURE Without the tenacity and spirit of Jim Curley, the Deepings might well still be without its own fire station! Jim had arrived in Deeping from Leicester via Peterborough where he had become a member of the auxiliary station at Dogsthorpe, sited next to the main station and used in the event of big fires breaking out or when there were large gatherings in the city which needed to be covered. It was here that the Green Goddesses, that became famous at the time of the strikes in the70s, were deployed. Jim had become the Chairman of Market Deeping Parish (at that time) Council, where he managed to persuade Councillors to fund a fire engine if a station could be found. At this time fire cover for the Deepings was provided by Stamford, Crowland and Bourne. Never one to resist a challenge, Jim set to with Bob Jibb, Fred Smith, Graham Ellis and David Jackson to build a makeshift garage of angle iron and chicken wire under the tree at the back of the Library. Their office was sited on the top floor of the Library. In these days before the advent of technology and the use of a pocket bleeper, in the event of a fire the retained fireman would be called on the telephone to be informed of an emergency. Soon the fire engine was moved to the Gas Works, just down the road from the Boundary Fish and Chips, but in 1972 after Richard Wade had sold The Park to Lincolnshire County Council and the Health Centre was built, space for a purpose-built fire station and later the Police Station, was made available.
Back row l-r Michael Jenkins, Callum Coomes, Steve Smith, Richard Boulderstone, Michael Culff, Peter Parsonage, Shaun Kelly, Robert Townsend Front row l-r James Stapleton, Christopher Curley, Kallum Errico, Leah Chapman, Oliver Fountain, Stewart Hill.
Jim quickly set about recruiting men to join the retained fire brigade, many of whom were his friends; such as Bruce Manning, Roger Wilson, Pete Wright Derek (Ben) Parkins, Paul Hopkinson, John Stevens, Dick Cook, Richard Long, Norman Bingham, Trev Townsend and Michael Crosby. Later Melvin Healy, Dave Aaron, John Willis, Micky Culff, Pete Parsonage, Shaun Perkins, Steve Medcroft, Keith Griffiths and Paul Rojek would join the team. Without the support of sometimes long-suffering partners it would be difficult for firemen to make themselves available literally at the drop of a hat, so the social life of the Club has always been important
and in the early days it was Bob Jibb that ran the social club. There would be memorable New Year’s Eve parties when the appliance room was cleared for dancing and the lecture room was used as a social room. As David Jackson comments, ‘The lads were like a second family.’ Camaraderie is still a crucial aspect of life as a retained fireman and this year the crew entered a team in the Deepings Raft Race. Jim Curley stayed with the local brigade from its inception until he was retired at the age of 45 having had a heart bypass. The tradition has, though, remained in the family as Jim was followed by son Mark who has now passed over the reins to his son Chris Curley. Following an ongoing recruitment campaign there will soon be a crew of 16, including the Station‘s first woman recruit, Leah Chapman. This level of volunteer help is much needed because the Deepings Fire Station has on average 350-400 call outs a year, 75% of which are medical calls. Introduced in 2002 this service was at first seen as a temporary measure to help the NHS but now it is an integral part of the 8 minute EMAS target. ‘Acquiring these new skills and being there to help at the tail end of people’s lives does without question enhance the empathy you feel for others,’ confides Watch Manager, Mickey Culff, Traditionally firefighters are self-employed; mechanics, decorators, farmers, electricians, builders although employers such as Perkins, Tesco and Wilcox have been proactive in allowing their staff to become involved and in the past Dick Cook was a railway signalman and Richard Long worked for South Lincs Patterns. Some of the retained firefighters at Deeping have also gone on to work full time in the Service; Mick Crosby went to London while David Jackson, Roger Wilson and Peter Wright went to the Station at Dogsthorpe. Memorably Peter and David were present at the fatal fire in Fengate when a lorry containing three quarters of a ton of gelignite destined for the quarries ignited; this perforated both of David’s eardrums and left him with tinnitus. He says ‘You have to be able to put the work to the back of your mind and a sense of humour is an essential ingredient!’ continued >

FEATURE There is regular training at the Fire Station on Wednesday evening between 7 and 9.30pm and the specialised training facility at Waddington provides initial training as well as RTC training with residential training at weekends. which as well as covering new developments includes ladder and breathing apparatus training. Though it has oft been said ‘you can’t learn to be a fireman out of a book!’ hard work pays off and in 2014 and 15 the Deepings Station was awarded the accolade of Lincolnshire Beacon Status Station. having satisfied a range of criteria. A new appliance is now on the cards, LCC having rolled out a contract with Scania to replace the fleet of MAN appliances. The uniform of heavy black jacket with silver buttons has now been relegated to history. Now the uniform is designed to buy the firefighter more time in perilous circumstances both ergonomically and with state of the art fabric. her feline revenge on the Fire Service when released from a precarious position The very first call from the new station, as it then was, was to a house fire on top of an up and over garage door she trapped the finger of fire fighter, Shaun in Godsey Crescent, Market Deeping, when Roland and Sheila Schofield Perkins, who has never quite lived down his reputation as paw old Shaun! lost their furniture and clothes in a fire which destroyed their lounge. Call outs have remained predominantly to farm and industrial accidents, and This is all very different from the first time the ‘new’ Market Deeping fire engine field fires (especially in the day when stubble burning was commonplace had been called out to a fire on Friday, 11th May 1900 when a barley stack fire and in the 1976 drought) still feature as do the all too common road in Maxey was doused in six hours. The Engine had been called out to a fire traffic accidents. There have been memorable fires in the area over the in Langtoft Fen in September 1899 but the fire was put out before it got there last half century, one being the day the Three Tuns Pub caught fire and a messenger was sent ahead to turn it back! There appears to have been no (opposite the Boundary Fish and Chips) another when the Baskervilles working fire engine in Market Deeping in the late 1800s, the old one being ‘ old Hotel in Baston was gutted in 1990. The crew was deployed in the wake and rusty and enveloped in cobwebs and dust’ according to a 1874 edition of the of the Easter floods in 1998 when water had to be pumped out of gardens Stamford Mercury. The Deeping St James engine was used but after it broke down in Eastgate, from the Waterside Garden Centre and in Uffington, where irreparably Market Deeping Town Council ordered a new one for £95. The first livestock were rescued. Firemen came to the rescue when a young man drill was held in 1899 under its Captain, Mr E. Neal (who also provided the caught his leg in a garden rotavator in Suttons Lane and other less serious horse) and its Lieutenant, Mr Harrison. The crew at this time were T. PROFILE FEATURE
Ground breaking technology from Garfords of Frognall Creating solutions to problems has been the stock in trade of the Garford family since Norman Garford set about building his own sugar beet harvester in his farm shed at Fox Covert Farm, Maxey in the 1950s. He was encouraged to take the prototype he had made to the sugar beet demonstrations held in Lincolnshire in 1953, where it attracted the attention of farm machinery dealers Crawfords of Frithville, who became the first distributors of the GBW Sugar Beet Harvester. Norman formed a company with Reg Butcher and Dick Witt (hence GBW) to manufacture the machine which they did from premises in Mill Lane, Maxey. Over the next decade the machine gained in popularity and in 1963 the firm was made an offer that they couldn’t refuse and sold out to Pershore, Worcestershire-based Fisher Humphries. Norman bought Nunton Lodge Farm at this time and resumed his career as a farmer. He had, however, three sons who had inherited his interest in farm machinery and the trio would modify and build machinery for their own use, thinking nothing of chopping and welding and creating, well… solutions to problems they came across daily on the farm. In the late 1970s they started to manufacture small hoeing and band spraying equipment. These were the days when it was common for farmers to hoe with a tractor-mounted hoe and to send a team of labourers in afterwards to 18
hoe manually. Band sprayers allowed the more costeffective use of selective herbicides as they were able to get closer to the crops. The need for band sprayers declined over the ensuing years but in the meanwhile the team at Nunton had seen a new topping device for a sugar beet harvester and began designing their own version. Once again they were encouraged by British Sugar to demonstrate their model at the National Sugar Beet demonstrations and once again they received a good reception. Manufacturing commenced and soon they were selling the ‘Skew Bar’ topping kit as a conversion kit for other farmers’ sugar beet harvesters under licence from the National Institute of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE). Not long afterward the Garford Victor Sugar Beet Harvester was designed and became commonplace among sugar beet growers across the
UK. Norman, Michael, Robert, Philip and his father in law, Ted Chamberlain, worked together on the beet harvesting products through the 1990s, and in 1994 moved to new premises in Hards Lane, Frognall. In 2010 the business was incorporated as Norman and Ted retired and Robert took on the full-time running

of the family farm, leaving Michael, Philip and his wife Janet at the helm. In the late 1990s the firm had been approached by the Silsoe Research Institute (previously the NIAE) who had been developing camera technology for mechanical weeding equipment. This collaboration resulted in the launch in 2000 of the first Garford Robocrop Guided Hoe which was refined over the next few years as the company built the market up. In 2007 the Robocrop in-row weeder was launched, not only able to weed in rows but also around individual plants. Working on a grid matching system the camera looks at the crop ahead of the hoeing machine using imaging software to determine the position of the plants. The success of this equipment was recognised with the award in 2010 of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation category. Initially the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, the late Tony Worth, visited the factory to present the Award and later Janet
and Philip went to Buckingham Palace where they met the Queen and spent time talking about their developments with Prince Philip. On 10th March 2011 the Duke of Gloucester visited the Frognall factory and was able to exchange stories of the innovations his family had made in farming, in their case a conveying system for cereal crops using a unique technique. Now a world renowned name in mechanical weed control and with 90% of their business overseas, the company has benefited from the weak pound contributing to exports, growing by 35% this year. Employing 37 people, all based in Frognall, the company is still providing solutions to problems! As the armoury of herbicides that farmers can use to reduce the amount of weeds in their crops has been depleted and those that can be used severely reduced in effectiveness, the need for a keen mechanical option for weed removal is more crucial now than ever before. In the past it was vegetable growers
and organic farmers like Nicholas Watts, who had encouraged the company from the outset, that provided most of the business. Now it is growers, not only of sugar beet but cereals, oil seed rape, beans and soya, who form their customer base as reliance on chemicals is forcibly reduced. France leads the way in terms of its policy to reduce the use of herbicides and so provides the largest export market, but the company is sending products and its field service engineers all over the world. Staff turnover is low and the firm remains a predominantly family run business with Philip’s son Adam and Michael’s son Richard now employed along with nephew Andrew and sister Catherine in the fold. Phil Hales has run the factory for a long time and the Jennings family are all employed by the company; Jamie famous in Deeping St James for having provided the village with its beacon when he was still an apprentice. 19

Rachel’s trousers are from an antique centre in Derbyshire, shirt is 1940’s and the shoes were a lucky charity shop find. Taryn wears an original 1940’s frock.

The Rise of Home Education
HOME SCHOOLING
examined by Zoë Kornfeld
Is it me, or does the ‘back to school’ count-down seem to begin earlier each year? I must admit, the excitement of getting my hands on some crisp new stationery, choosing a shiny fresh pencil case, and donning a pair of un-scuffed slightly-toobig-but-you’ll-grow-into-them shoes became fond, yearly childhood traditions. Plus, it won’t be long before our Facebook feeds are inundated with the obligatory first day of the new school year photos. For some local families, however, there was no six-week break, and they will mark the first day of term by attending a ‘not back to school’ picnic, with a whole host of other families, to celebrate their choice to home educate. It is impossible to know precisely how many families in the UK are currently choosing to educate their children out of the school system, because there is no mandatory register, something which has been debated for many years. Recent reports estimate that these numbers have hugely increased – by around 40% in the last few years. So, why are more and more parents turning away from mainstream education? Fascinated by the subject, I have recently been chatting to a local home educator, mother of four, and all-round superstar, Dawn Styles, who has been kind enough to share some of her experience with me. I have learnt that each home educating family has their own unique story and motivations. Many feel that their child does not fit into a seemingly ‘one size fits all’ system, which can sometimes seem very assessment driven, deciding to take full responsibility themselves for their child’s learning. They believe in their hearts that their child would thrive more at home, spending their years developing at their own pace, with the people that know them best. Others find the possibility of being able to tailor make a curriculum to their child’s interests and needs, the biggest pull. Parents, like Dawn, who have enjoyed taking an active role in the early development of their child, might see no reason to give up this responsibility when the child reaches the age of five. Some children might enter school, but become unhappy, whether because of bullying, or other additional needs. Those who home educate see the opportunity to facilitate a unique learning experience from day to day, being totally child-led, gifting them the freedom to follow their natural curiosities, day in, day out. Of course, we must remember that children do not need to be taught how to learn and luckily come fully equipped with an endless supply of wonder.
As a teacher, and mum of two, I have personally seen the power of hands-on experiences in a child’s development. Within the confines of our school budgets, we try to plan in as many excursions, visitors, practical lessons, time outside in nature etc. For young people educated at home, with the world as their classroom, there is, in theory, no limit to their possible curriculum. Some families have more formal lessons as part of their daily timetable, taking full advantage of the low class numbers! Whereas, others, like Dawn, follow the less structured ‘unschooling’ approach, which allows the child to set the tone of the daily learning. This doesn’t mean that skills such as maths and writing are not taught, but are absorbed through a much more cross-curricula approach in most cases. For example, a simple task of baking a cake, from shopping and paying for the ingredients, to measuring them out, baking and decorating, could involve any number of reasoning, mental arithmetic, reading, art, science and engineering learning opportunities. Financial implications and logistics are key factors for any family deciding to make the big leap of faith into home education. Home educators in our area are able to take advantage of an extremely active

and supportive network that exists locally – a community that helps children and parents alike. There are regular meetings where children can share experiences and socialise with other children of all ages and backgrounds. Dawn’s children have recently taken part in an exciting course in radio production, run by Hereward Community Radio. In the past few months there have been plenty of opportunities for sports, such as ice-skating and swimming, art projects, joint adventures in nature to places such as Kings Dyke and beautiful days spent learning bush-craft. Back at home, some of the day may be spent using the incredibly rich online teaching resources available such as conquer maths, mystery science, and skoolbo, along with many more. Parents can support each other too – sharing expertise, resources and ideas, both in person and as part of the inclusive online community. This network is imperative to avoid families feeling isolated in a world where many are still suspicious of those who choose a different path. Of course, I’m not saying home education is for everyone, and it certainly doesn’t appear to be an easy option. There can be a difficult period of adjustment for everyone,
and sometimes a phase of ‘de-schooling’ is needed. It’s a huge decision, and one that can only be made by individual families, based on their specific needs. Some people choose to keep their children at home for the first few years of school, allowing them to perhaps be more emotionally ready, some children who are educated at home take formal exams, and some might start home schooling, but decide in the end it is not working for them. For me, the most powerful part of home education is the recognition that learning does not only take place in school, in term time, during the ages between 5 and 16. Every parent wants the best for their child, and if we are to create well-rounded, kind, innovative and confident adults of the future, we must take every available opportunity to nurture their love of learning from day one onwards. Our children’s sense of awe and wonder must be given every opportunity to flourish, whether this is at school or at home. If you are curious about home education or it is something that you are interested in finding out more about, Dawn suggests the best place to start is to join a forum online or pop along to a local meeting to chat to other families – a fabulous opportunity to hear real-life stories and discover how diverse the community is. Action on The River Welland
RIVER WELLAND
reports Geoffrey Gilfillan The River Welland rises above Market Harborough and flows through the gently rolling countryside of Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, before reaching Stamford, where it is one of the features that makes the town so attractive. Below Stamford, the river continues on its way to Market Deeping and Spalding where its character changes, slowing down as it becomes one of the four fenland rivers which drain the Fens, before entering The Wash. People have relied on the Welland for thousands of years for water, food, drainage, transport and energy and as a result the river and its valley have changed enormously. For example, the river used to flow through the Trinity Bridge in Crowland, which is now almost a mile away and the bridge is now a dry monument in the centre of the town. While many of these changes have been positive, such as the creation of the water meadows which were such an important feature of the Welland Valley, many more others have been destructive. We are left with the legacy of some of these changes, particularly those associated with the physical nature of the river, how it behaves in draining the land and how much water flows into it. There are also other, newer pressures affecting the river, such as sediment from fields. The Welland Rivers Trust strives to take action to address all the issues affecting the quality of habitat, wildlife and water in the entire catchment. Conservation Work on the Welland The Welland Rivers Trust is a charity dedicated to protecting and conserving freshwater habitats within the River Welland catchment. Our vision is that the River Welland, from its source near Market Harborough, Leicestershire, through to the tidal limit at Spalding, Lincolnshire, including all the many tributaries will: • Be cleaner and healthier • Continue to provide drainage and manage flood risk • Support more fish, birds and other wildlife • Meet the needs of drinking water suppliers and businesses • Provide a more attractive place for people to enjoy • Be sensitively managed by everyone whose activities affect it
Image: Mark Peck
We are achieving this vision by working with everyone who wants to help us, including individuals, land managers, farmers, local communities, businesses, voluntary organisations, local authorities and government agencies. To date, our work has mostly involved: 1. River restoration projects to return our rivers and streams to a healthy and self-sustaining state 2. Community engagement and education to raise awareness of river conservation issues, and to recruit, train, manage, and support volunteer groups on citizen science and river restoration projects continued >

RIVER WELLAND
River Warden Citizen Science Project Following several successful funding applications, we are launching a new project to train River Warden Groups throughout the Welland Catchment. The River Warden Scheme will give people who care about the River Welland and their local environment a chance to: Work with the Welland Rivers Trust to provide river monitoring on a short stretch of the River Welland (or a tributary of the Welland) Monitor wildlife including plants, invertebrates, and mammals – information which helps in understanding trends and identifying changes in the health of the ecosystem Record and alert the WRT and Environment Agency on pollution incidents – allowing a quick response to deal with the pollution event Record invasive non-native species such as Himalayan Balsam – so that species distribution maps can be produced, allowing for catchmentcoordinated action to remove and eradicate them Report fly tipping and littering – it can be a large threat to people, wildlife and fisheries Record localised flooding and other river issues in the community
32
The River Wardens will ‘adopt’ a stretch of river to suit their mobility, interests and location. Wardens will undertake periodic checks and monitoring of their adopted river stretch. On each visit the wardens will survey and record: Invertebrate biodiversity Water quality (testing for nitrate, phosphate, acidity, ammonia, and temperature) Invasive species (e.g. signal crayfish) Important wildlife sightings (e.g. otters) This information is being fed back to the WRT’s Project Officer, who is mapping the data, and supplying data to the Environment Agency. The River Warden Scheme allows rural communities to take action that will help conserve their river environment. Through simple monitoring techniques, our Wardens will be able to detect any severe perturbations in river water quality, ensuring that action is taken at the earliest opportunity should any severe perturbations be detected. Please contact us at info@wellandriverstrust.org.uk if you are interested in becoming a volunteer River Warden. Alternatively, you can follow us on Twitter or Facebook; just search for the Welland Rivers Trust.

GARDENING
Prepare your garden for a hot dry summer tips from nurseryman Colin Ward of Swines Meadow Farm Nursery
The summer has been challenging horticulturally due to the dry and heat. The garden here at Swines Meadow has stood up to the rigours of the season fairly well due to the practices we use within it. To garden successfully the most important element is the soil and making it provide the essential elements for growth and sustainability of your plants. Soils can be very varied but essentially, they need to be able to provide nutrients and moisture. Here our soil is heavy clay which in winter can get waterlogged and in a summer like this year’s can dry out and crack. We operate a no-dig policy here at the Nursery and every autumn/winter apply a mulch to the garden which over time has changed the whole structure to a wonderful friable texture which is free draining. There are all types of mulch from leaf mould to rotted manure. These are very good mulches to use but here at Swines Meadow we use rotted wood mulch, as it has a more open structure which can provide drainage and insulation in the winter but has the ability to retain moisture during the summer months as well as acting as a good weed suppressant. We also use other products in conjunction with the wood mulch and a very important one is crushed volcanic rock dust with the brand name Remin, which is full of minerals and is very good for rejuvenating tired soil. Because of its porous nature it provides an environment for beneficial bacteria which are an important part of the process of the breakdown of the wood mulch. Worms and woodlice are also valuable contributors to this process and the population of these Remin will increase as your soil improves. Another
recently discovered benefit of Remin is its carbon capture abilities, so all in all a winning situation for your soil. Another useful product we use in the garden is Rootgrow which is used in the planting procedure. A small amount is put into the bottom of the planting hole and then you place the plant so that its roots come into contact with it, infill and then water the plant in. The clay granules of the Rootgrow dissolve and release a fungus which attaches itself to the roots and then spreads its mycelium though the soil which in turn brings water and nutrients back to the plant. About three years ago we took the side of a conifer hedge back to the trunk, giving us a border of about a metre in depth. As can be expected this was an area of very poor quality soil, Firstly we soaked the soil and then applied a dusting of Remin topped over by wood mulch of about 10cm. Two months later in April we planted it up! Plant selection is also an important aspect towards having a garden that can tolerate the type of summer we have just had. Salvias, lavenders and rosemary are all recognised as being good drought tolerant plants but there are plenty of other plants you can use which we can recommend. We have watered the garden this summer but only on four occasions as it is a show garden. Without using the techniques described above we would have had to water the garden at least twice a week over the last seven weeks.
Hardy Plant Society will be holding a plant fair at Swines Meadow Farm Nursery On Sunday 16th September 10:00 till 2:30 also refreshments at the Cow Shed CafĂŠ 34

Market Deeping Mayor, David Shelton reflects on an eventful month As previously mentioned a joint Working Group has been formed to consider the organisation of Remembrance Events and this year invitations to the World War 1 Centenary Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be sent by Market Deeping & Deeping St James Joint Remembrance Group. This I believe, reflects the sacrifice made by those in our community. Next I would like to express my admiration for the teenager participation in the National Citizen Schemes that have taken place in the Deepings this summer. Two groups were based in our Town Hall, their projects being the refurbishment of Cherry Tree Park, and a “Blast from the Past tea party” for care home residents. Other groups in the Deepings had a project of “Go explore” to encourage the community to become more active and another to work at the Cricket Club while raising funds for Sue Ryder. What an exuberant bunch and what enabling experiences for them! Finally I had the privilege to meet Chris and Gabs at the Town Hall, as they left on the “Chris and Gabs World Cycling Tour”. An epic journey for the charity Prevent Breast Cancer Please visit – http://www.chrisandgabsworldcyclingtour. com/ A humbling experience.
Andrew Bowell, Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council A warm August welcome to you all. At the end of 2017 Deepings Police Station was closed and we were told it was no longer required. Councillors from DSJ had other ideas and following a lot of work and a number of meetings the Station was reopened, run by a group of volunteers . Cllr Chris Halls and myself are two of the volunteers, and we were both involved in the recent Open Day where tours of the Police Station were given, and children had the chance to play with a police car and van. It did not take long for them to work out how to switch on the siren. The queue to visit the cells stretched round the block all day, and I had the pleasure of spending four hours in the cells where mug shots could be taken. It remained hot and sunny for the Raft Race, and it was wonderful to see so many people out and enjoying themselves on the day. It was my honour to open the event, and afterwards it was a pleasure visiting the many attractions and stalls, and talking to so many people. The Parish Council does not meet in August, but we will meet again 27th Sept 7.30 The Institute, Church St DSJ.
