Welcome

World Book Day was once again embraced by the children of the Deepings and their families with great gusto! And that is no surprise. Having fought for three long years to save the Library, it is now the busiest community Library in Lincolnshire offering a wide range of activities for all ages and interests! What’s more our second Literary Festival is heading towards being a sellout success. Have you bought your tickets yet? If not and you would prefer to buy them in person rather than online then come to the first mobile Box Office from Stamford Arts Centre to be held at the Deepings Library on Saturday 13 April 10am-1pm. - Judy Stevens.

Representatives from each year group at Linchfield School

Judy Stevens and Jill Thomas will be standing for the Conservative Party in the SKDC elections on May 2nd. If you would like to join us for a chat and a cuppa to discuss any local issues we would love to see you at the Priory Church Hall, DSJ on Saturday April 27th 2.00- 4.00 pm! Promoted by Kelham Cooke on behalf of Judy Stevens 41 Frognall and Jill Thomas 53 Frognall DSJ.

NEWS Last year Deepings U3A added Lawn Bowls to their list of summer activities by teaming up with the Market Deeping Bowls Club in Douglas Road. Their members competed for the Boundary River Restaurant Trophy over the course of the season with the winner being Malcolm Hoadley (pictured right) receiving the trophy from The Boundary Fish & Chips Takeaway and River Restaurant MD Bill Shaw. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the U3A should contact Susanne Hoadley on 01778 343515 or of the Market Deeping Bowls Club phone Chris Bines on 01733 574192. Space-A-Holics, the Deepings School team taking part in UK final of the First Lego League in Bristol were over the moon to be presented with the Judges Award. This award recognises consistent performance across four categories (working as a team and interacting with others, providing a unique solution to a problem, robot game and robot design) without winning one of them. The team had previously won the regional heat, which took place at Park Air Systems.

A cheque for £850 was presented by Deeping Gate Ladies Group to Delia Ward and Brian Turner of Bourne Support Group Parkinsons UK. ‘Wombles Big Furry Music Quiz’ at the White Horse, hosted by Si Fox and Cass Wales raised £320 for the Deepings Youth Group. The winning team, Simple Minds (pictured with Si left) won comfortably and took home £100 of local business vouchers and the obligatory winners medal.

NEWS

The Deepings Library are very proud of the Duke of Edinburgh Award students who volunteer there.

Swines Meadow Farm Nursery has a new look.

As part of this year’s Deepings Literary Festival students in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 at the Deepings School worked with Ben Crystal, actor and teacher of Shakespeare to help their understanding of Shakespeare’s plays. Ben is also a leading author on Shakespeare and his latest book ‘Shakespeare on Toast’, is a fun and accessible book for students and parents on understanding Shakespeare’s plays. His visit was funded by SKDC and Head of Arts at SKDC, Michael Cross is pictured left with Year 10 students, Ben Crystal centre.

SKDC Ward Members Grants have helped boost the coffers at Deepings Youth Group to the tune of £1,000! And Cllr Bob Broughton has added to the bounty with a grant of £300 for a karoke machine. Pictured Youth Worker in Charge, Cass Wales with Cllrs Dilks, Stevens and Broughton.

Open all hours! Jack Blades Shop

14

FEATURE Jack Blades will forever be remembered in the Deepings as having the corner shop to end all corner shops, welcoming all comers into the Deepings, and resplendent with its bright red blinds. Not popular with everybody, though; Doctor Fraser’s wife who lived opposite threatened to tear them down looking, as she thought, ‘like a bus!’

about to disgorge, called Parker the builder to come and put hoardings up and make the building safe. In true canny Jack Blades style he received compensation for the damage and the new roof was installed within a fortnight. The dining room, replete with a big old table, was downstairs and then you reached the kitchen. The bedrooms were more conventionally upstairs at the back of the building.

But as Easter approaches it is a timely moment to remember the magical Easter Room that Jack opened in his shop. Having had a roomful of Christmas goodies, Jack and his wife Gwen would go to town at Easter with a room full of sumptuous chocolate goodies appreciated the more as rationing of chocolate was lifted in 1953. In pride of place would be a solid chocolate figure. In 1955 it was an almost life-size Scottie dog, specially commissioned from Woodcocks of Peterborough, which the couple took to the Children’s ward at Peterborough’s Memorial Hospital.

The couple had taken over from the Lentons who closed up the shop selling papers and housing the Post Office on the Saturday and moved to Abervagenny. Blades then moved in on the Sunday and the transformation began! Open all hours could well have been a term coined for Jack Blades’ shop – the day started for Jack and Gwen at 4.30am when the post would arrive and the postmen would come in to start sorting at five. The newspapers would arrive then as well and shortly afterwards the 14 paper girls and boys would come to collect the papers (some of these, like Lee Sutton, reside in Market Deeping today!) look at the board to see how many of each they would need and with the help of a book would pop the papers through nearly every door in Market Deeping and beyond. Jack would deliver to Maxey, West Deeping and Northborough himself, taking one of the boys with him to jump out of the car and dash up the drives. There were also rounds in the afternoon when the then daily Evening Telegraph would be delivered. Jack would have a cup of tea when he was ready but never a break! Soon Jack applied for a licence to sell papers on a Sunday and that quickly became the busiest day of the week.

Jack was born at 6 Albert Place Peterborough in 1905 to John and Emma Blades and was baptised at St John’s Church in the city. He became a butcher’s apprentice and married Gertrude Cranfield from Little Downham who had moved to Fletton with her parents. Jack rose through the ranks to become a butchery manager and in 1939 he and Gertrude were living above the shop at 70 Bridge Street in Peterborough. He combined this with service as an ARP (Air Raid Precautions) Manager during the war years. Jack was known to Bob Carr, butcher of Market Deeping (see issue 36 of the magazine) and would come over to help in his shop here whenever Bob’s journeyman was taken ill. Sadly Gertrude died on 25th February 1949. The couple were childless. But she left Jack £8,640 and he was then able to buy the corner shop in the prime position in Market Deeping. In 1953 Jack married school teacher Gwen Bellamy in Peterborough who famously uttered the words ‘Oh, what a place to come to!’ when Jack proudly introduced her to his new project. As if on cue the false ceiling above what was to become their lounge overlooking the market place fell in and the couple had to embark upon some serious renovation work. Three years later the roof itself collapsed. Jack claimed that the vibration created by the laying of new pipes had caused the calamity one Saturday evening and, aware that the Empire Cinema was

The postmen would expect to finish their first round at eleven and then be back for an afternoon delivery between 2.00 and 5.00. Mr King, Mr Pritchard and Mr E. Prentice were all postmen working out of Blades’ shop. But the telegrams would be delivered by Jack himself, and he recalled the unprecedented number received by Margaret Evans the hairdresser in Church Street when she got married. All of solicitor Wades business went through the Post Office overseen by Gwen who kept registers of the transactions – the only Post Office in England to provide this service. Everyone would come in to collect their pensions in the days before bank transfers were the norm and Jack would also take the Post Office service out to RAF Langtoft in his early days. Of course, Jack provided all they needed in the shop and so they would spend their pensions in the days before the Rainbow supermarket. continued >

FEATURE At first the couple were helped in the shop by assistants Joan Lynn, Yvonne Richards and Helen Law but the number grew as the shop gradually got more popular and ultimately 20 people were employed, including the paper boys. Trade would come in drifts, people on their way to work in the morning mostly to Peterborough; Combex and Dowmac at Tallington were names etched on Jack’s memory. People would buy papers and cigarettes, chocolate and biscuits. Then in the afternoon the shop would be deluged with kiddies coming out of school, in those days the Green School and another in Church Street, and they would buy penny bars of chocolate, jelly babies and sweets which would be put in little white bags for them – aniseed balls, ha’penny shrimps and bananas. At Christmas they would buy a bar of chocolate for their mums and Mrs Lynn used to wrap every one of them. Ordering in such quantity, Jack would buy all his supplies direct from the manufacturer with reps from Cadburys, Rowntree and Mars all visiting the shop. Opening on Christmas morning was the norm when the Senior Postmaster would come out and wish the postmen a Happy Christmas before they went out and delivered, fortified with a mince pie and a tot of whisky! Jack had an ad at the cinema: ’If Jack Blades hasn’t got it - he’ll get it!’ and was soon known for selling everything. Blades would stock shoes and Wellington boots, tobacco – a bone of some contention between him and neighbouring Bowmans. Personal stationery from Dickinsons could be ordered and the shop would have two or three big binders of Christmas cards that customers could take home and select for personalisation. The company also supplied Basildon Bond, the writing paper of choice in the 50s and 60s. Jack and Gwen did take holidays and on one occasion went on a world cruise. The couple would always go to see the World Cup being played wherever in the world it was being played! At these times Jimmy Holland and his wife would come in and take over at the helm. Jack would regularly be driven to the White City where he would go to watch his greyhound racing. Eventually Dr Heywood advised Jack to sell up because of Gwen’s failing health but they bought the house at 2 Suttons 16

Lane and renovations took two years before they finally moved in. Afterwards Jack continued to go to work daily at the shop, driving his purple Jaguar even after he had sold the business: ‘I stopped with them for three years afterwards and took not a penny piece, I did it all for free.’ It was sold to Frankish Tarrant then Readwell and changed hands in relatively quick succession to United News. Jack died a millionaire in 1992 and Gwen a few years later in 1996! As well as bequests to loyal staff and friends, Jack left a sizeable sum to the Deepings Health Centre. Over the years the Blades had been very close to the Biehler family; Yvonne Richards, having worked at the shop, married a young rosebudder from Bavaria, Reinhard. Jack had supported the couple in starting their garden centre, Baytree, at Weston Hills and after his death a rose was named after him, a gesture you would expect after Reinhard had kept Jack’s garden in pristine condition for his lifetime. So the legend of Jack Blades’ shop, etched in the history books of Market Deeping, will live on! Research: Judy Stevens, Joy Baxter Photos: Ian Baxter, Jane Abbott Words: Judy Stevens

John Sergeant – What’s on his reading list? When John Sergeant takes his guest speaker place at the Deepings Literary Festival on Saturday 25th May, he will be further cementing ties to Lincolnshire going back for over 150 years. Not only was the former BBC political correspondent presented with a Doctor of Letters, (Honoris Causa) by the University of Lincoln Chancellor Lord Victor Adebowale CBE in 2013, but his maternal great-great grandfather Cornelius was also born in Lincoln in the second half of the nineteenth century. Cornelius then went on to import farm machinery from England into Russia. When he returned to Lincoln after his first successful trip overseas, the horses were unhitched from the carriage bringing him triumphantly back and were replaced by men who pulled the coach back in glory! What an accolade! In his autobiography ‘Give Me Ten Seconds’ John says in his slightly laconic way: ‘There is a long tradition in my family of being present at historic events’. I am sure the audience at the Literary Festival gala dinner will be regaled with tales of some of these! John is already famous for being hand-bagged by none other than Grantham’s own Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher! He has, though, ‘a wonderful affection for her’ remembering her fondly as being a tour de force, a lady who loved an argument and would give an onthe-ground correspondent all the material he needed! A woman in politics in the 1980’s was rare and Sergeant found Thatcher always well prepared and ready to enter the fray, not particularly clubbable or needy of being liked. While her liking for men was well documented, she always considered women to be the superior sex.

18

She was a trail blazer for women who broke down barriers and Sergeant considers that the refusal of the Oxford Dons to offer her an honorary degree to be churlish. Conversely Sergeant found prominent contemporary politicians, Tony Blair and Angela Merkel to dislike an argument, and Theresa May to suffer from comparison to Thatcher. John would not be drawn on inevitable comparisons with today’s political commentators but did comment that he liked to reflect on his use of words, to cogitate over them and to consider how they would sound in a week’s time. Hyperbole was not a characteristic of John’s repertoire of political commentary. A conversation with him reveals that he is as fascinated by power and politicians today as he was when a cub reporter on the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo. It’s no surprise. then, to discover that a book that he himself would have liked to have written is ‘Tyrant’ by Stephen Greenblatt. In this exploration of the social causes and psychological roots of tyranny, Greenblatt charts the ways in which William Shakespeare delves into the questions of how power works. Why does tyranny happen and why do we put up with a tyrant? With uncanny insight, Shakespeare shines a light on the narcissistic appetites of demagogues and the opportunism of hangers-on. It is, however, French police detective Jules Maigret created by writer Georges Simenon - that has stolen the heart of John Sergeant, who was at one time a BBC correspondent in Paris. John makes one stipulation, and that is that the books have to be read in French. He explains that nowadays the books can be downloaded onto an iPad or kindle and so any words that evade you from what is already a limited selection used in the book can be immediately translated.

In fact John, who learnt German and not French at school, says this is a wonderful way to learn the language! There are 76 novels and 28 short stories about the detective written between 1931 and 1972 and they create a world of ‘Frenchness’ all of their own. Currently John is engrossed in ‘Cuba - A History’ by Hugh Thomas in preparation for a travel piece he is writing for the Daily Mail. Hugh Thomas is famous for his book on the Spanish Civil War written in the 60’s and which won the Somerset Maugham Award. His book on Cuba traces the history of the nation from its capture by the British in 1762 through the years of Spanish and United States domination to the revolution of Fidel Castro. Fascinated as he is by those in power past and present it is not surprising to learn that the newly released ‘A Certain Idea of France - the life of Charles de Gaulle by Julian Jackson is also on John’s reading list. ‘Through sheer force of personality and bloody mindedness De Gaulle managed to have France recognised as one of the victorious allies’, he says. There is a clear theme developing across this catalogue of John’s books and those at the Deeping Literary Festival gala dinner will be able to have a deeper delve into it! John Sergeant is the celebrity speaker at the Festival Black Tie Gala Dinner at The Deepings School on Saturday 25 May.7pm. Tickets £50 – available online at www.stamfordartscentre. com or call the Arts Centre Box Office on 01780 763203. Deepings Literary Festival 23-26 May. www.deepingsliteraryfestival.co.uk

Washday Memories of Maggie McKay

WASHDAY

Until my mother acquired an electric washing machine, sometime in the 1950s, the weekly washing was done in an outhouse aptly named ‘the wash-house’ which was situated on the right-hand side just outside the back door of the main house. In the wash house was a brick-built, metal-lined washing tub under which a fire had to be lit to heat the water in the wash tub above it. Monday was always wash day and the fire had to be lit early on because it took quite a long time for the water to heat up. Apart from sheets, towels and pillow cases there were always my builder father’s work clothes to be washed too. This was heavy stuff! (Finer mainly female garments were usually washed, by hand of course, in a separate smaller tub of lukewarm water.) Although there was soap powder for the boiler tub of ‘heavy’ washing the washing by hand of underwear and other clothes involved a lot of rubbing with big green bars of Fairy soap. This was all heavy work and perhaps the heaviest part of all was when the sheets, towels etc from the big tub had to be pulled up, wrung out of as much as possible of their soapy water, and transferred then to a big tin tub of cold rinsing water. After this came the second wringing out and then the mangling before everything could be hung out (as long as it wasn’t raining) on the washing lines in the garden, to dry. The mangle lived not in the wash house but in the scullery (a big back kitchen just inside the back door of the house). All sheets, towels etc had to pass between the two rollers of the mangle to squeeze out as much water as possible so that they would have a fair chance of drying, before the day was done, on the outdoor clothes lines. Operating the mangle was another heavy job, at least when it was a case of getting several layers of folded sheet between the rollers. For such big items you needed both hands to turn the handle. The final part of the process was, of course, to hang out the washing on the clothes lines. In our case this meant conveying one or two big baskets of wet washing a hundred yards down the garden to where two long clothes lines were strung between a laburnum tree and two strong posts that my father had driven into a lawn for that purpose. Pegging the things out on the clothes lines was one of the nicer parts of the whole process but, even in this there was a right and a wrong way to do it. You didn’t just peg things on the line any old how!

There was an optimum way to peg out a shirt or blouse (upside down using three pegs!) and another method for sheets (which sometimes were strung between two lines). Things you learn in childhood from your mother sit deep – and I still find myself doing it that way today when I have the pleasure of hanging out washing to dry. Another thing my mother always said, which I think is true, there’s nothing to compare with the lovely smell of washing that has dried in the open air. Washing machines have, thank God, taken away all the drudgery that washing involved ‘in the bad old days’ but they have taken away too some odd moments of physical, sensuous pleasure – and the sense of achievement that did exist when you took down off the line a beautiful pristine wash that smelt so good!

DEEPINGS CAMERA CLUB

The Deepings Camera Club’s 16th annual exhibition of 177 prints at the Deepings Community Centre in Douglas Road was, as always, a very eclectic mix with something for everyone to enjoy. As well as stunning landscapes there were pictures of wildlife, sports photography, portraits, creative work and more. Hundreds of visitors flocked to enjoy this popular event, and they were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite images. When the public votes were counted, first place went to ‘Brief Encounter’ by Graham Clegg, with Peter Gray’s tree frogs in second place, while an image of baby wrens by Brian Redshaw took third spot. Unusually all three top three continued >

DEEPINGS CAMERA CLUB places went to natural history prints, all extremely good photographs. For the first time an experienced judge from the camera club circuit was invited to the exhibition and asked to choose the best photograph in each of seven categories. He selected ‘Duel in the Sun’ by Paschal Jeveons. Dave Stewart, the club’s Chairman, was delighted that so many people had come to see the excellent work on display which showcased the interests, skills and talent of the club’s members. He added that he was also extremely grateful to everyone who had given time to prepare the exhibition and to welcome visitors over the weekend. Deepings Camera Club meets each week on Wednesday at 7.30 at the Deepings Community Centre. There is a wide range of speakers and activities covering all aspects of photography throughout the year. EASTER BUNNIES

Bunnies for Easter! Well, they hop off the page! says Zoë Kornfeld Due to their extreme fertility, rabbits have long been associated with spring, and the new life that we see leaping up all around us at this time of year. The famous fairy-tale writer The White Rabbit by Jacob Grimm set Sir John Tenniel about connecting the Easter bunny to a German goddess named Ostara, and as playful, often cute and fluffy characters they are often to be found hopping off the page of children’s stories. I decided to explore a few of the most well-known…

Alice in Wonderland The ‘White Rabbit’ – a seemingly perpetually tardy bunny– entices Alice to follow him down a rabbit hole, and so her troubles begin… he becomes a symbol of her curiosity. This

metaphor has since been used to explore themes of secrecy and the hunt for truth in many films and TV shows – Sesame Street, Lost, the Matrix and Jurassic Park to name but a few. Of course, we mustn’t forget the slightly deranged March Hare. Lewis Carroll based his bedraggled tea party-loving character on the common phrase ‘mad as a March hare’, a term around since the 16th century. Every year, signs of the hare beckon the spring and show that milder weather is on the way.

Everybunny Dance! Best-selling illustrator and author, local genius, and ex-work colleague of mine, Ellie Sandall, came up with the idea behind her first rabbitinspired children’s book Everybunny Dance! after she spotted the pun on Pinterest. After securing the title, Ellie set to sketching, and then the story grew from there. She recently described how lovely her rabbits are to draw – full of character, the shape of the bodies, and their movements appeal to her artistic flare, and, of course, each bunny (and there are many), has its own unique little character. Drawing from her own childhood experiences of owning and handling pet rabbits, Ellie’s books are joyful, encourage inclusion, and it really is hard not to sing, and dance along to the sweet tale of a rabbit and fox musical encounter.

Watership Down I suspect, like many, I have childhood memories of being terrified, possibly even traumatised, by the 1978 animated version of the story: the version of the tale known to most. Let’s face it – it was brutal! Over the years there have been many theories about the hidden meaning behind the colony of rabbits, and its quest to find a new home away from humans. Comparisons have been made and the story declared an allegory for both Christianity and Communism – something which the author’s daughters recently confirmed as total myths revealing: ‘It’s just a story about rabbits.’ Their father, Richard Adams, was determined not to ‘baby’ his readers, and, now, as an adult, I can appreciate his attempt to address themes of conflict and death for young readers. continued >

Guess How Much I Love You

Peter Rabbit

A firm favourite amongst pre-school age children, and their parents, this tale of two hares, competing to measure their love for one another, has become a timeless classic, becoming a beautiful stage show that my son and I watched recently, both of us mesmerised throughout. I wonder how many other families have a tradition of saying: ‘I love you right up to the moon – and back’, as a result of being snuggled together enjoying these gangly hares and their adventures.

Perhaps the most famous literary bunny that hops to mind is Peter Rabbit – a mischievous character, and national institution, who seems to be reinvented for each new generation to enjoy. I’m not sure what Beatrix Potter would have thought about James Corden’s most recent ‘party animal’ version of this classic children’s character, but with every depiction, the essence of a highly energised, quick-witted young bunny and his adventures have found their way into the hearts of readers across the world.

A magical work of fiction with words and illustrations combining perfectly – the author, Sam McBratney was challenged by his editor to write a powerful short story using hardly any words. The finished piece contains only 400 which, when married to Anita Jeram’s gangly, beautiful, pastel illustrations, provides another masterpiece ready to hop off the page for an adventure.

CYCLING

Website showcases Bourne CiCLE Festival A new website has launched for the district’s first cycling festival later this year - www. bourneciclefestival.com.

With momentum building amongst residents, businesses and the cycling community, the web site also has suggestions for how people can get involved.

The Bourne CiCLE Classic (31 August - 1 September) promises an exciting weekend of cycling fun with BMX bikes, skateboarding, vintage cycling, penny farthings, refreshments and entertainment.

Communities along the route have the opportunity to arrange events to celebrate what’s happening on their doorstep, such as a village BBQ, race bunting, painted or even knitted cycles along the route.

Both the men’s and women’s elite races actually start in Thurlby with most of the UK’s professional teams expected to be on the start line. Spectators can watch as around 120 women competitors cycle down the A15 from Bourne on Saturday morning, co-ordinated by a rolling road closure to the start. Sunday sees an expected 150 men follow the same route.

From Thurlby, the route follows a 114-kilometre route for women and a longer (174 kilometre) route for the men’s race - both wending their way through villages towards Grantham and then eastwards again to finish with a sprint to the line in Bourne. The women’s race is expected to take around three hours, and the men’s five hours. Detailed routes are on the web site for men’s and women’s professional races plus a time trial and an amateur riders’ sportive.

Amateur club Bourne Wheelers is managing the Saturday morning sportive with a choice of three distances - 54 miles, 69 miles and 86 miles. It follows some of the elite road race routes, with a picturesque traffic-free circuit within the Grimsthorpe Estate. The festival has been organised as part of the visitor economy activity within InvestSK, SKDC’s economic growth and regeneration company. 31

The Wedding of Miss Constance Spurr In the January issue we reported the wedding of the daughter of the landlords of the Winning Post, then known as the Wheatsheaf and now as Towngate Mews. Little did we know then that we would be contacted by one of the bridesmaids, Vivienne Spurr, now Vivienne Wood of Spalding! The Stamford Mercury had reported on 2nd January 1941: ‘Miss Constance Spurr only daughter of Mrs and the late Mr C Spurr of the Wheatsheaf Inn to Mr Percy William Vincent youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs W Vincent of Northam Sussex, a member of the Peterborough City Police.’ He remained in the CID until his retirement as Inspector. He had bought the Police house in Oundle Rd, Peterborough, which the couple had moved into. This was eventually inherited by the couple’s only son, Roger. The bride, who was given away by Mr Frank Partridge, wore a gown of ivory velvet with a veil surmounted by a silver and velvet coronet. Her nieces, the Misses Vivienne and Ann Spurr, were bridesmaids in cherry velvet with headdresses and Mr Frank Spurr was the best man.

We now know that the wedding took place on Christmas Eve 1940 but this muchloved family photograph taken at the gates of St Guthac’s Church, gives wonderful insights into the fashions of the day. Easy to overlook is the bowler hat held by the groom. At this time it was older generations that would wear such a hat, more casual styles like the fedora or trilby were being worn by younger men. But remember, this is a rural community where new styles may take a while to catch on. The men were all carrying gloves, a sign of more formal times! The bride’s dress would have been bought without the need for clothing coupons as these were not introduced until June 1941. Her veil was relatively short which again is a nod to the 30s, as later in the 40s longer veils were more popular. The wedding dress has a modest short V-shaped neckline with soft shoulder gathers. The sleeves were refined Gibson style, named after the Gibson Girls; a narrow leg of mutton sleeve

shape but with reduced sleeve head fullness, the lower part of the sleeve narrowing. It would seem that white gloves were worn, which was considered good form for a Church wedding. When clothes are in relatively short supply one thing that can be done is to have a more elaborate hairstyle or headdress and the one that Constance chose was certainly eye catching. Velvet was a very popular choice of fabric and the bridesmaids in cherry red were a stylish reflection of the festive season. The bride carries a bouquet of chrysanthemums, a flower typically carried by war brides of the 1940s, and button holes are of the same flower. The bridesmaids carried posies of mixed anemones. Suits were still everyday wear for men in the 1940s and here we see a selection of both double-breasted and single-breasted styles, the latter worn by the groom. The thickness of the fabric was much heavier then than now and the wide chalk stripes of Frank Partridge’s suit were the most classic 40s’ suit pattern. It was worn here without a waistcoat, a style increasingly favoured, while Frank Spurr wore a slightly older style.

ALPACAS

Spring time at Misty Meadows There is nothing quite like the arrival of spring, with its green shoots of new life and the delicate beauty of the blossom.

The fledgling business, set up by former head teacher Karen Hepworth-Lavery, is based in Maxey and has just celebrated its first year.

It is a season full of hope and optimism and it is also a busy and exciting time at Misty Meadows Alpacas, which reopened in March after a two-month winter break.

Karen fell in love with alpacas three years ago after going on an alpaca walking experience, so much so that she decided to buy some alpacas of her own. She began with just four and now has a small herd of eleven. For the first few months they remained on a farm in Essex until Karen found land near her home, finally moving them up to Maxey in August 2017. And in keeping with spring’s theme of new life there is much excitement at Misty Meadows with the anticipated arrival of possibly two baby alpacas, known as crias, this summer.

“We are so looking forward to that,” said Karen. “With alpacas it is not always easy to be certain whether they are pregnant or not, but Honey is showing all the signs and we think Mivvi may also be expecting. “If we do have two new arrivals it’s going to be quite an amazing summer.” Misty Meadows formally opened to the public in March 2018 and enjoyed a very encouraging first year, with the alpacas capturing the hearts of all who came to see them. Karen said: “Alpacas are wonderfully placid and calming and people just seem to love them.” Set in an idyllic lakeside setting, Misty Meadows aims to provide an intimate alpaca

ALPACAS experience. It is by design a small-scale operation to give visitors the opportunity to get to know each member of the Misty Meadows family. Karen added: “We want people to enjoy a very personal and memorable occasion whenever they visit. “Our alpacas have all been handpicked for their friendliness and character and from the moment you first meet them you will find them impossible to resist.”

Occasionally, I join the Spin Room cyclists on a Sunday morning, if I deem the weather to be suitable. I get up, pull on my cycling top and shorts (not lycra!), fill up my water bottle, check my bike tyres and I’m off into the early morning sunlight. Is this to tone me up and improve my stamina and muscles? No. It’s for the promise of cake halfway round. ‘Wanna do 50 miles today, Si?’ Are we stopping for cake?’ ‘Windmill at Wymondham?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Count me in then!’ I know some people get a buzz from the actual exercise, but in my case, bribery goes a long way! - Si Fox

My guilty pleasure is not cake or chocolate, it is to get up at ‘silly o’clock’ in the morning, to take a walk around Deeping Lakes. This early morning foray allows me some much needed solitude. So much better if it also provides me with fresh air, exercise and chance to observe a multitude of wildlife. To see night into day, to feel the warmth of the rising sun or the freshness of the wind on your face as you stand on the Welland Bank is something I shall never tire of. To me there is something special about that first hour of light. To hear the rattling call of the Green Woodpecker, to see the blue flash of the Kingfisher or the silent flight of the Barn Owl and observe their life cycles makes you realise that you or ‘we’ are not the only ones with our daily struggles and problems. To observe these things whilst allowing yourself to be absorbed into your surroundings makes you realise you are alive! With blood in your veins and air in your lungs. It exercises, inspires, calms, educates, invigorates and I come away feeling like I’m fully charged ready for the day / week ahead. Now I’m ready for the cake and chocolate! John Parsonage 38

great guilty pleasures

There’s a bloke works down the fish shop swears he’s Elvis; well; he may not work there; but he sings there several times a year. The Boundary Fish and Chip shop is a total gem. Not only do they sell delicious food; they have event nights several times a year when the restaurant is closed to the general public and lucky ticket holders get to have the night of their lives; with live music from either The Haley Brothers playing 60s’ hits or from an Elvis impersonator. And you get a delicious three-course meal served by friendly, efficient staff. With live music, dancing, laughing, eating and drinking, The Boundary is so much more than just a fish and chip shop. Well done, Bill and Jean. - Su Donley

Whilst buying our ‘seriously seedy’ loaf, we always buy two delicious fruit scones, hot from the coal-fired Victorian oven at The Old Bakery DSJ, at about 10.30am on a Saturday (or, at this time of the year, Hot Cross Buns) Even more tension is created when they are still in the oven and you have to go back for them ten minutes later! Or as has happened on occasion, Clive brings them round! - Ann Taylor While walking by the river in the village, I occasionally call in at the Antiques & Crafts Centre. This is rarely with the intention of buying anything specific, just browsing, but I rarely come out empty handed. My main areas of interest are transport-related, as I write about automobilia and railwayana for national magazines. Typical purchases might therefore be an old oil can or a framed carriage print. I also have a soft spot for old annuals as the first thing I ever had published was a cartoon in Buster comic in the late 1960s.It is not unknown for me to spot something I like the look of and return the next day having checked that I have a suitable space at home! Meanwhile, more temptation lies just across the road in Godsey Lane Coffee.. - David Brown

EASTER

Pom Poms for Easter! 1

2. Wrap the wool from a ball round and round putting the ball through the middle of the circle - the more you go round the fatter your pompom will be!

1. Take the side of a cardboard box and draw around a mug and an eggcup to give you a circle of cardboard with a hole in the middle. Make 2 and hold them together.

2

4 4. Remove the two pieces of cardboard completely, shake and voila! your pompom!

5 5. Stitch two pom poms together with a bodkin (large needle) threaded with the yarn to make a rabbit or chick and adorn with cut out beaks and feet. Felt or card can be used for this purpose.

3 6 3. When you have wound the wool round and round and the hole in the middle is as full as you can get it, cut between the two layers of cardboard. As you do so take a piece of yarn and thread it around the two pieces of card. Pull really tight and make a double knot.

6. A pom pom maker which can be bought from Riverside Beads for ÂŁ3.99 makes quick and neat pompoms!
