Welcome
Rangers First Team that lined up in the FA Vase against Wantage.
There are many stars shining in the Deepings this New Year - but I would like to say a personal thank you to the two women who head up the Library and the Deepings Youth Group - Louisa Crowson and Cassandra Wales. I am lucky enough to be involved with both services and know that the Deepings would be a much poorer place without them both! Deeping Rangers also finish the year on a high! Their quest for honours continues on four fronts, the FA Vase League, League Cup the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy, and the FA Cup. Another great run in the world’s greatest competition where Rangers reached the FA Cup Preliminary Round before eventually losing to a higher level, Rushden & Diamonds in a replay. The team continue to excel in the FA Vase and have gone further in the competition than ever before, defeating Clacton Town 4-2 and setting up a fourth round tie (last 32) against Eastwood Community on 5th Jan. The team sit in 4th position in the League with games in hand. Rangers have also reached two cup semi-finals, in the League Cup they will play for a place in the final against league leaders; Daventry Town at home on 12th March and in the Lincolnshire Cup semi-final they will take on Holbeach United, the venue and date to be decided.

LILLI’S
Kings School & Lili’s Pupils from the Junior Department of The King’s (The Cathedral) School, Peterborough visited Lilli’s tearooms for what has become an annual school tradition.
Image: Gilman & Soames
Each year, four pupils earn the chance to travel to South Fen Christmas Tree Farm in Bourne to select and chop down the school Christmas trees – and then visit Lilli’s Tearoom in Market Deeping for a well-earned treat on the way back to school. This annual pilgrimage has even made it onto the Chris Evans Radio Show – where children share something they are doing for the first time ever. The school itself is unusual: over half of its Junior pupils are choristers for Peterborough Cathedral, and it is one of only four chorister schools in the country which are part of the state education system.

Now proudly opening its doors to new residents as Towngate Mews, the site of the Towngate Inn has been one occupied by a hostelry at least since the early 1800s when it was known as The Horseshoes. The decade of the 1820s had begun with Mr and Mrs Roberts as landlord and landlady, a local couple. Mrs Roberts was the daughter of Mr Addyman of Market Deeping. Sadly her husband had died while she was expecting their third child and shortly after the birth at about six o’clock in the evening while speaking to one of their servants in the bar, she fell into a chair and passed away instantly. The medical gentlemen who attended at the scene put the cause of death down to a ruptured blood vessel near the heart occasioned by the grief and anxiety of having lost her husband. In the mid 1800s the public house had been purchased by Thomas Gray. Thomas had fallen foul of the law when Superintendent Pidgeon, the inspector for weights and measures, summoned him for having incorrect measures on certain earthenware vessels. Three pint measures were destroyed in court and a fine of two shillings and sixpence was imposed for each with costs. In 1883 Thomas Gray and his partner, Richard Watson, put the inn up for sale and it was duly auctioned at the White Horse. Situated on one acre at the top of Towngate facing Town Street on the south and on the east the turnpike road to Bourne, the Inn came with a blacksmith’s shop and premises, and a cottage. It was bought by Soames & Co, brewers of Spalding. Local newspapers record the arrest by Inspector Pawson of Charles Robinson who was found drunk on the premises in July 1889. He was fined eleven shillings including costs of eight shillings and sixpence. Soames & Co put the business up to let again in 1896 with immediate possession. It is unknown who became the landlord, but in February 1914 the licence was not renewed. A year later the old Wheatsheaf Inn in Towngate was closed for the last time and purchased by the Day family who converted it into a private residence. Major Merry, on behalf of Soames & Co and J. Thompson, licensee of the Wheatsheaf Inn, applied to rebuild on the corner of the Bourne and Spalding Road, until recently the site of the Horse Shoe Public House, setting the premises back as this would be an advantage to the highway. Permission was granted as this was the only public house in this part of the parish. In the 1920s Louisa, daughter of George Warrington of the King’s Head in Market Deeping, and her husband, Charles Spurr, a Police Constable in the Lincs Constabulary, became the new landlords. They brought up their family on the site, continued >

FEATURE their eldest son, Charles leaving from the Wheatsheaf to marry Marjorie, eldest daughter of John Blessett of Market Deeping in 1927. They were married at the Baptist Chapel, Mr J. Longstaff officiating and Mrs Bert Smith playing the organ. The bridesmaids were Constance Spurr and Ruth Blessett, Frank Spurr was best man. In December 1930 the pub hosted 80 members of the Sick & Dividing Club of the town where finances were discussed, and the Treasurer Mr F. Rudkin declared that they were in good order and they would all receive a dividend! In the following year it was the turn of Constance; she married Percy Vincent, the youngest son of Mr and Mrs W. Vincent of Northam, West Sussex, and a member of Peterborough City Police. Charles Spurr senior having died, the bride was given away by Frank Partridge. Her nieces, Vivienne and Ann Spurr, were bridesmaids and Mr Gordon was best man. In the mid 1950s The Wheatsheaf once again changed its name when it became The Winning Post. This name change was accompanied by an extensive refurbishment by the owners, Soames & Co. What was once a small tap room became an attractive lounge fitted and decorated in racing style. The tables were horseshoe-shaped, racing photographs were put up on the walls and paintings of racehorses were displayed behind the bar, and over it was an enormous silver horseshoe, so giving the lounge its new name. The landlord, Fabian Foreman, had many associations with racing, working part-time at the nearby stables owned by George Vergette. The MD of Soames Brewery, Major Hugh Peacock of Milton, had horses trained at the stables and one of them, ‘Start’, was pictured on the sign of the Winning Post. It was Major Hugh and another director, Mr A. Fenwick, who created the design for the horseshoe lounge. The change of name was deemed to alter the atmosphere from what had been a tiny country pub to a spacious and unique Inn. Fabian (Fabe) and his wife Millie’s nephew was Dickie Valentine, voted top UK male 18
vocalist in 1952 while he was with the Ted Heath Band; he would often come and sing at the pub. The singing was contagious and the Foremans’ daughter, Sue, got together with Ellie Sharpe and Diane Bloodworth when they were young teenagers to form a singing group. Sue later married Les Dash, drummer with Hedgehoppers Anonymous, who had a number one hit with ‘Good News Week’. The pub was nothing if not a colourful reflection of the local Towngate community. Johnny Parker from Towngate West would tie his donkey up outside while visiting for a pint (or five) and would reportedly do anything for a bet, including standing on his head in the bar! Local man Cliff Croxford lived in the landlady’s caravan at the rear of the car park in 1969 for six months when he first moved to Deeping During the 70s Yorkshireman Tony Dransfield and his wife Molly were at the helm, Molly a landlady in the mould of Coronation Street’s Bet Lynch. The pub still retained close links with the stables; the colours of the jockey who was pipped at the post at the Grand National on Team Spirit were in the bar as was a horseshoe from the horse. When Princess Camilla was entered into the National she was bought to the pub and a local news reporter tried unsuccessfully to get Molly on her back! There was a stage in the main bar where every weekend John would play the drums and Lou would play the organ which he brought from his home in Baston on his

FEATURE VW Van. Acts would come from far and wide to perform including a man who would change into his swimming trunks in the kitchen and would then move his muscles to a tune called Wheels. Always a great knitter, Molly would knit for children of the orphanage in Bourne run by Lou and his wife Pat. Lou had been a naval rating in World War II on a British aircraft carrier in the battle of the Coral Seas. Eventually the couple moved to Spain. Other acts included a man who would dress up as a woman and sing Al Jolson’s ’Mammy’ and a wellbuilt lady with a voice like Sophie Tucker’s, would sing beautifully. All performers would be offered a drink on the house and the evening would be wound up by a good-looking MC and Lou playing Spanish Eyes. When Watneys sold out to the Great Metropolitan Hotels and the rent was tripled the couple left Deeping for a pub in Redruth, which they ran for a few years before their retirement to Yorkshire. By the time ex-Chelsea footballer Bert Murray took over the pub in 1976, the racing décor was less in evidence but the stable lads who worked at Vergettes stables nearby would still drink in the pub; Pete Kelly, one of the top jockeys, was a regular. Coming from the East End of London, Bert was brought up where singing and music was very much part of pub scene. So this, his first pub after retirement from professional football, having latterly played for Posh, was noted for the music and singing, employing both an organist and a drummer at the weekends. It was here that Bert brought up his young family. In the days before the bypass the road was busy and it was sad day when the family’s Jack Russell was lost on the road. It was also sad when the tiny stone cottage was demolished, after its owner, a little old lady, died. Elsie Cook had stayed on as the cleaner after the Dransfields left. There were characters in the pub as well: Ted and Jane noted, for pushing a pram with a doll instead of a child, were regulars. There was a crowd who would come from Lancaster Way; Roger Dickins, Reg Richards, Vic Wallhead and two families of Foxes would drink in the pub as well. Duckling Geeves ran a raffle on a Saturday night during the 20
shooting season for a brace of pheasants, with the first prize funding a Christmas meal for Towngate pensioners, for which some of the ladies darts team served as waitresses. In 1983 Bert and his family were pleased to leave the cramped living conditions and moved to the White Horse, while another fondly remembered couple, Eileen and Eugene O’Rourke, took over at the Winning Post until Eugene sadly died there in 1993. Liam then joined Eileen as pub manager. Music still played an important role and football referee Pete Camm would run a Saturday night disco and compere quizzes on Sundays. In February 1999 the Towngate Inn officially opened for business and last orders were called at the Winning Post in a rammed bar; the pub was demolished a few days later. The new Inn featured a luxury pub and restaurant as well as a 14-roomed motel complex in the grounds. The new pub had a bar named after the old pub and the old sign was transferred to the new bar. One of the motel rooms was adapted for disabled use and another was turned into the honeymoon suite. It was not a favoured time for the building of a new pub and the Towngate Inn enjoyed at best chequered fortunes. After its closure the site was purchased by the current owners and the much needed apartments are now on the market and a new chapter in the history of Towngate Corner begins. Dickens - putting the ‘D’ into the Deepings Literary Festival 2019 As the clock strikes the hour at midnight at the turn of the year so the curtain goes up in anticipation of the Second Deepings Literary Festival! And who should be walking the boards as part of the illustrious programme that has been painstakingly put together over the last year? None other than the great--greatgrandson of the man himself – literary giant, Charles Dickens. Anyone who has seen Gerald Dickens perform cannot fail to note that the love of the written word and the expertise in its delivery has not diluted across the years! Gerald’s fascination with the work of his famous forebear, led him to create a one-man theatrical performance ‘A Christmas Carol’, and the success of this across the world has led to others including ‘Mr Dickens is Coming!’ which he will reprise in the Deepings on Friday 24th May at the Deepings School.
‘Anyone who has seen Gerald Dickens perform cannot fail to note that the love of the written word and the expertise in its delivery has not diluted across the years!’ This is a light-hearted and varied look at the life and character of Charles Dickens incorporating scenes from the great author’s works, diary extracts and observations from those who knew and worked with one of one of the world’s best loved novelists. Gerald was born in Royal Tunbridge Wells, son of David and Betty Dickens and cousin of the author, Monica Dickens, writer Lucinda Hawksley and actor Harry Lloyd. His many claims to fame include winning the Weakest Link in 2004 when all of the contestants had famous ancestors. He lives with his wife Liz, a pianist, in Oxfordshire.
22
At the Deepings Literary Festival he will be accompanied by the highly accomplished musicians and songwriters, ‘The Bookshop Band’. Formed in September 2010 and releasing their first album in December that year, they have since released 13 albums each exploring their responses to over 100 authors’ books.
‘A great book intensely fires your imagination over the time it takes to read it. You are living the life of that character or exploring a time or place you’ve never been to before. As we turn to write, trying to evoke what it was about the book that most resonated with us, what emerges are highly personal songs but from new points of view, inevitably influenced by the different perspectives experienced whilst reading the book,’ says one member of the Band, Ben Please. The band has toured extensively around the UK and abroad, from bookshops to festival main-stages, and have been commissioned by BBC Radio 3, The V&A Museum, The National Portrait Gallery and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, most recently writing two songs for the launch of Philip Pullman’s The Book Of Dust. They are currently working with The V&A Museum on a musical series of banned books. They will be bringing a new specially commissioned piece with a Dickensian theme to The Deepings as part of the evening’s entertainment. Between them Beth Porter and Ben Please bring the books to the stage with a multitude of instruments, including cello, harmonium, glockenspiel, guitars and ukuleles which, with their distinct voices, create a cinematic sound that draws the audience right into a highly intimate performance, at once touching and mesmerising, heart wrenching and funny. Modern living in a traditional setting City and County Estate Agents have had the pleasure of showcasing the Towngate Apartments on behalf of Brightfield Group. Since the initial launch, they have been inundated with enquiries and many of the apartments are already reserved. Prospective buyers have been drawn to the way the development has been designed to be in keeping with the older stone built properties in the area. The apartments are being fitted out to a high specification with purchaser’s having the option to choose their own fixtures, fittings and flooring etc. There has been interest from a real cross section of the community, ranging from first-time buyers using government’s Help to Buy scheme, to middle aged professionals and also many enquiries from those looking to downsize to a low maintenance property suitable for retirement. It has been lovely to see future residents meeting their neighbours and getting to know each other on recent open days! The next open weekend is scheduled for 12th and 13th January from 12-3pm, and the Agents look forward to welcoming many more people into this new community. Anyone wishing to attend or who would like more information should contact City and County on 01733 212305.

WEIGHT LOSS
Gaynor Murray - a weight loss inspiration! On 1 October 2017 I started my Cambridge Weight Plan journey. I had always been big; my mum always said I was big-boned! I dreaded PE and games at school, and it was even worse that I had an older slim, athletic sister! I vividly remember one sports day at my primary school where I had to compete in an obstacle race where we had to climb through a ladder on its side, I tried but realised there was no way I was going to be able to squeeze through between the rungs on that ladder and all I could hear was my mum and Nan cheering me on, shouting ‘Come on, Gay!’, but I came home last. I wanted to die, I was only about six years old and I was mortified. The following year on sports day I locked myself in the bathroom and threw the key behind the tank in the airing cupboard. I refused to come out. I remember my mum got a neighbour to climb up a ladder to talk to me through the window. My dad came home from work and he was furious with me. He broke the door down and we never did find the key. After that, my mum wrote me a note saying I suffered from hay fever and could I be excused from games! Throughout my l-r Paula, Gaynor, Libby adult life I had been on diets before and lost weight, sometimes with other wellknown weight loss companies, but I always quickly put the weight back on that I had lost and ended up bigger than ever. I got married at 17 and had three children. In early 1990 my marriage broke down and later I married Gordon. We travelled all over the world, but I was still unhappy with my weight and hated clothes shopping. In 2015 I lost my mother; I had been her carer and my whole world revolved around her. I didn’t really have any time for myself. But in 2016 I retired early from work and suddenly I had time on my hands. As I live on a beautiful lakeside community I decided I would like to learn to run and I really fancied having a go at water skiing. I was 59 years old at the time and very overweight. I was out walking one day when I saw a lady that I knew continued >

WEIGHT LOSS
vaguely ...I had started to try to raise money for The British Heart Foundation by running a marathon ‘26 miles in May’ (not all at one time, over the 4 weeks). I had taught myself to jog using the couch to 5k app. I found it so hard to start with; I could not even manage to run for more than 30 seconds at first. She stopped me and asked how I had got into running as she had lost 2 stone and was keen to start. I asked how she had lost weight and she told me she had been on Cambridge Weight Plan. I thought she was a sensible sort so if she had used CWP it couldn’t be that bad! I was a fat, unhealthy 13st 11 lbs and 5ft 2’ tall. I was a miserable size 18/20. I had tried every diet going, but as soon as I lost any weight I would go back to my old eating habits and pile it all back on again. If I ate anything bad, I always stuffed my face until I felt sick.
Jumper Seasalt, Straight leg jeans from White Stuff, scarf from a selection at Felicity
I went on the internet and googled CWP consultants and found Paula Meeks who lived near and was mobile so suited me. She came round and we hit it off straight away. She explained how the plan worked and how you work your way up the steps. She weighed me and told me to get a healthy BMI I really needed to weigh 9st 13lbs. I told her there was no way I would ever get that low – I had never been near 9 stone since I was a teenager. Between us we agreed I would aim for 10st 7lbs though secretly didn’t think I could achieve that goal. But I loved the plan from day one. I sailed through Christmas and Easter and still lost weight. I love chocolate so the CWP choc bars and shakes were ideal for me. I even managed to get through a week in Spain and only put on a quarter of a pound! I came home and promptly lost that. I soon reached my original goal of 10st 7 then continued to lose! I worked my way up the steps, amazed that I could eat so much and not gain weight! By June 2018 I even surpassed my next goal of 9 stone 12 lbs and weighed 9st 9lbs, 4 stone 1½ lbs down and a size 10 for the first time ever! I threw out or gave away all my size 20, 18, 16 14 and 12 clothes and bought everything new in size 10, including new smaller wetsuits. I am actually lighter than my two daughters, and we all wear the same size clothes now! I feel amazing and I get stopped all the time by people telling me how good I look. Paula says I am a walking advert for Cambridge Weight Plan and I feel so passionate about the diet that I am applying to be a consultant. I want people feel as amazing as I do. I am so much healthier and confident nowadays. I love running and water skiing and going out on my kayak. Everything is so much easier now I am 4 and a ½ stone lighter! 2019: A Year to Make a Difference says Emma Lannigan
Look around the Deepings and you are not far from someone, or a group, who is actively making a difference within our local community. There’s no age or background restrictions, just local people making a difference. It’s quite inspiring to know, for instance, that our community library was saved by a group of very passionate people who have since grown this local service. There are groups many of us don’t hear about too, there in the background, fundraising and providing support to members of our local community. The Deepings, originally a small town with the surrounding villages, has grown immensely over the years. What makes it a very special place to live and work is its sense of community. People here want to make a difference. What can stop people from stepping out and making a difference are often thoughts of ‘What if I’m not good enough?’ or ‘What difference can I make?’ Some people want to help and just haven’t found a way as to how they can, and this is for you. What if just your small actions are making a difference? They are, and here is some inspiration for ways you can make a difference this coming year. Friendship: The simple acts of kindness like helping family, friends, colleagues and neighbours can change how we feel. If you see someone on their own in a cafe or a new neighbour move in, say hello, smile and start a conversation. Volunteer Locally: Our community survives with support from many organisations, for young people in the Youth Group, Scouting to Age Concern and the Deepings Men’s Group and many other local groups. Volunteering helps others through your time, skills, patience and kindness. But it’s not just one way. Volunteers enjoy the sense of giving and benefit from the friendships and connections they make through the volunteering roles. Why not take part in the annual litter pick up? Set a Challenge: When you’re naturally inclined to fitness there are many challenges you can take part in, from fun runs and charity walks, to cycle rides and triathlons. You can make a difference not only to your health and fitness, but to others through your challenge. Also, what about a swimming challenge? We have the only 25-metre lane pool in the area. Make New Choices: Making a difference isn’t just about other people. We can make a difference through the choices we make around what we buy, what we eat and drink. How can you make a difference in 2019 by recycling more, using less plastic, eating less meat? You can also make a difference by making small changes to the way you travel around the town. Would you swap the car for walking or cycling on certain days of the week?
Noreen Scaitergood calls it a day on her 92nd birthday having served refreshments to Deeping blood doors for 25 years!
Image: Ann Taylor
At Work: With a thriving business community across the Deepings we can make a difference through our work. Get a team together to enter one of the local annual events like the Raft Race or Walk Happy. Make a difference by having a walk-to-work day each week or month, or host a sponsored cake bakeoff. Set up a well-being day once a month, quarterly or annually. Promote a Passionate Cause: Over the years our town has seen many people and groups of friends get together for passionate causes, raise awareness and money for charity. Remember the Gracefully Uncovered Calendar raising awareness of Breast Cancer, the F.O.C (Friends of Caroline) Event where local people raised around £14,000 and purchased new colour coded chairs in the PCH Oncology Chemotherapy Ward; Deeping Cares, the group who knit for premature babies. There are so many reasons to get together with friends and make a difference to a charity you care about. What Will You Do? There are lots of inspiring people on our doorstep, and in just one conversation you could be doing something different where your 2019 makes a difference. The difference might be to you, your health and wellbeing, and for others. Just remember, together we all make a difference. Know someone who has made a difference in DSJ this year? Then nominate them for the Making a Difference Awards - contact 01778 348859

DECLUTTER
Is Clutter Holding You Back?
– Fall Back In Love with your Living Space parents or moving home can make us realise we need to organise our belongings better. What my customers all have in common is they realise that the amount of things around them is holding them back.’
In our modern lives it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in our homes. A professional declutterer will help you take back control of your living space. The problem of clutter When too much stuff builds up around us it stops us enjoying the rooms we live in and connecting with them on both an emotional and practical level. They just don’t feel like home. A second problem is that we can’t find things – how much time have we all wasted hunting high and low for our favourite clothes, sentimental objects, or important documents that have gone missing? Then there’s the emotional side – being surrounded by too many, or pointless, things can present a psychological hurdle that we need to get over before we can move on and feel stronger.
More than just ‘Tidying Up’ Conchi is keen to stress that decluttering is more than simply tidying up.
According to Conchi the Home Coach, a professional declutterer living in the Peterborough area: ‘Customers contact professional declutterers for a host of reasons. Often, work commitments take up a lot of their time and they just don’t have the time or energy to create the environment they want. A growing family can also be a big challenge for busy
‘Anyone can put time and energy into tidying up now and then, but if you don’t introduce some simple systems to stay clutter free, you’ll fall back into the same state. What a professional declutterer does is teach you methods to stay on top of things.’ Conchi takes things a step further, calling on her continued >
35
DECLUTTER background in interior design to help customers to transform cluttered spaces into beautiful, welcoming ones.
For many, decluttering brings a psychological boost. After working with a professional many people start to feel happier and more proud of their home, and get a sense of well-being from where they live. Put simply, they fall back in love with their space.
The benefits – more time, more money, less stress The end result? Different people will get different benefits from working with a professional declutterer, depending on their reasons for getting in contact in the first place.
Need some more inspiration for your Spring tidy up? Being able to find things more easily will free up time and reduce stress, and living with less stuff around us can have financial benefits, both in terms of how much we buy, and the amount of space we need for storage.

Not a lot but at £2 more the two were on the right side. Then the cameo glass bracelet came up – they had paid £32 and all their hopes were pinned on this gaining much more at auction. Disaster! It sold but at £30 – less than the girls had paid.
The smell of bacon butties welcomed us to the auction rooms of Golding and Young, well-established auction rooms since 1864, and there was a tangible sense of timehonoured traditions. There was, though, from the Deepings contingent a sense of eager anticipation. Auctioneer John Ireland had generously given of his experience when the two teams were making their selections at Market Deeping Antiques with £50 per team given to them by I’d rather be in Deeping magazine. The question was: would it be Jean and Bill of the Boundary Fish and Chips and their charity the Air Ambulance that would win the day, or would it be Alison Ireland from Cloudnine and her partner Cory from the Granary at West Deeping that would take the honours? The six oval napkin rings selected by Jean as being a perfect addition to the Christmas table were first to go under the gavel and they did not disappoint; originally bought for £5.95 they were sold for £15.00. They were closely followed by the red and white handkerchief bowls – at £8 for

BARGAIN HUNTING
Jean Shaw the pair I had been silently kicking myself for not having bought them to liven up my own table this Christmas! There was a bidder in the room after my own heart and they sold for double the original price at £16.00 The white glass vase that Jean and Bill had finally bought with the remainder of their funds was listed as a retro cylindrical vase and in its catalogue entry certainly looked like an iconic design piece which, knocked down to just £3 when they purchased it, looked to be worth very much more. It did not disappoint with the gavel coming down at £12. Lot 213 was Alison and Cory’s Carlton-ware 1960s retro coffee pot. They had paid £7.50: would an eagle buyer share their enthusiasm and bid more? Yes they did! Not a lot but at £10 the pair were in profit! Their Venetian glass dish
Now all eyes were on the iconic 1950s sputnik-style clock which had been Bill and Jean’s star buy at £25. Would this prove to be the item that would set the room and the couple’s auction fortunes alight? Sadly no, the clock sold but at £20, £5 shy of the price that they had originally paid. When the final tally was done Alan and Hilary Davis Jean and Bill had made £63 at the of Mkt Dpg Antiques auction before their commission was paid and Alison and Cory had made £50 – the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and Age Concern Deeping were the beneficiaries! 39
Reflections from David Shelton, Market Deeping Mayor
Andrew Bowell, Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council
Welcome to the new year with much to anticipate and look forward to. We have been told by SKDC that the new Deepings Leisure/Cultural Centre will break ground later this year. Our Town Council have been able at last to re-own our Town Hall, that was ours for hundreds of years, for a pound sterling. Our Council has given full financial funding to support the excellent and vital facilities provided by the Deepings Library and the Deepings Youth Group. This May, there will be the Elections for Parish/Town and District Councils. I urge you to give considered votes, as more responsibility is progressively being devolved down to our parish level.
During December your Parish Councillors have been hard at work calculating the precept for next financial year.
Announcements Sponsored by R J Scholes
A budget has to be agreed by full Council before the precept can be set, so careful consideration has to be given for all expected expenditure. Local councils do not receive any direct funding from central government and are therefore reliant on the local precept and any other income they generate from the services or facilities that they provide. The precept is the local council tax required from local electors to meet the council’s budget, and is a component of the total council tax levied on local government electors. Local elections will be held in May this year. If you have thought that you would like to actively contribute to the life of your local council and would like to stand for election contact the Clerk on clerk.dsjpc@btconnect.com

5 Great Indoor Playscapes with Zoë Kornfeld Play. It’s a small and unassuming word at first glance, but a mightily important one. The United Nations has, in fact, deemed play a human right. Play is sometimes described as ‘what children and young people do when they are not being told what to do by adults’. It is a time when children should be given space, and support, to develop their creativity, explore their senses, use their imaginations, share ideas, practise risktaking, develop social skills, and, of course, be physically active. With this in mind, here are a few local indoor play centres, all within driving distance, and all offering a unique invitation to play, no matter what the winter weather has in store.
Tattershall Farm Park
Wyevale Garden Centre
Happy Faces
OK, so I know I said local, but bear with me – we are staying in Lincolnshire, so I’m sneaking it in… What I love so much about this place is the vast range of play options available to visitors: it really is a place where we never run out of things to do. Not only are the reptiles, birds of prey and farm animals exciting to see, there’s a wonderful outdoor play area, music making station and trampolines aplenty. Indoors (see, we got there eventually), there are a few great options. In the soft play area, youngsters of all ages are invited to climb, swing, slide, tumble and crawl through the threestorey play equipment. Then, with a bouncy castle thrown in for good measure, and plenty of ride on cars, be sure not to spend all day here, because a short walk away is a fantastic indoor sand pit. Jam packed with diggers, scoops and buckets, there are plenty of ways to excavate and play in this unique area, before heading next door to the ‘Swing Barn’ to continue the fun. If you fall off the swing, not to worry, the room is filled with soft straw, which is also fun for the whole family to mess around in! 46
Far from the largest soft play centre in the area, but well worth a visit, a well-timed trip to Crowland Garden Centre could result in you having the whole place to yourselves! We have whiled away hours on weekday afternoons, enjoying use of the spinning seats, slippery slides, ball blaster and climbing frames. The compact size of the equipment means that the slide can easily be enjoyed over, and over, and over… and if you have a toddler, you will know how popular repetition is! Pre-walkers have their own area, but my youngest was keen to explore everywhere on offer. Then, if a change of scene is needed, you can, of course, visit the garden centre itself, with a firm favourite being the amazing range of fish available to buy (or use as a toddler distraction) in the aquatic centre. For a small fee, you can buy fish food to feed to the very friendly Koi Carp, which always entertains my two.
Based in Glinton, this colourful and inviting play space has been lovingly designed to enable parents and carers to play alongside their children. Offering a wide range of educational toys, role play, sand and water activities, messy play, crafts, singing, games and so much more, Happy Faces moved to its current premises in 2010, when The Crown pub was up for demolition. Through hard work and dedication, the team turned the building into an inviting play and learning centre in just nine weeks! Monday to Friday, you will see both smiles aplenty, and rainbows adorning the walls of this firm favourite of local families. Sessions are relaxed, and provide a great place for adults and children alike to meet new friends. Happy Faces gave my children fantastic opportunities to play alongside each other very early on in their relationship. Parents can take away new play ideas away with them, while children can take away beautifully handmade crafts and, of course, wonderful memories
The Playtown The newest place to be seen playing locally, and an overwhelming hit amongst pre-schoolers and their parents alike, this brand spanking new role play centre offers a unique and exciting spin on indoor play. Thoughtfully designed, and wonderfully equipped, with quality costumes, props and toys, The Playtown offers a great opportunity for little ones to mix and play with children of all abilities and backgrounds. When we arrived, youngsters were busy getting into character, developing their vocabulary and communication skills, acting out real-life scenarios, and obviously having fun playing! We couldn’t wait to join in… One minute, we were nursing a poorly penguin back to health in the vets, the next, donning a fire fighter’s uniform before clambering onto the pretend engine, fully equipped with sirens, of course. Visitors can also spend some time on stage in the theatre – my little boy climbed into a dinosaur costume and sang ‘Bob the Builder’, before heading to the shop next door to buy his weekly groceries. Complete with immaculate facilities, and yummy refreshments, it is clear to see why many are quickly making a return journey to Essendine for more adventures. We can’t wait to go back for more!
Blood Oranges Now Available in our Farm Shop
The Yard Dreamed up by two local mums, this soft-play centre in Stamford aims to provide both fun and stimulation for little ones, along with yummy refreshments for adults. The Yard clearly understands how to make an indoor play area inviting for all of its visitors, young and old. Children can explore the beautifully clean ball pits, slides, ride on cars, climbing frames and tunnels, whilst the grown-ups indulge in incredible cakes and pastries from the ever -evolving menu. A fantastic community hub, the play centre does much to support others locally. From stocking, selling and using local produce, to hosting breastfeeding cafes, craft workshops, and mini pop-up stalls, there’s always something new and exciting on offer. Our eldest had his first birthday at The Yard, and it was absolutely fantastic. The hassle of organizing food, party bags and entertainment was all taken care of, and the attention to details that is used in all aspects of The Yard’s branding and facilities, is one of the reasons why I love it. Yes, parking is at a premium, but who cares? Get there early, and enjoy!
