Welcome
Seventy four parents and their little ones gathered for the first anniversary of Little Linchfield, the group for pre-schoolers and their Mums and Dads who meet on a Tuesday morning at Linchfield School between 9 and 11 am. Set up by Janice Bullock, Alison Wilshire, Hailey Markley ably assisted by Linda Nottingham and Chris Walker, the group have come together from an initial twenty parents and their little ones to now regularly attracting over seventy people. They have celebrated the passing of the seasons together with Halloween and Christmas parties and enjoy the kind of camaraderie that ensures that a problem shared is a problem halved. It is of no surprise that the Group were nominated for an Award in the annual Deeping St James Making a Difference Awards and that Janice Bullock received the Person to Most Make a Difference in the course of doing their job. She has worked with children in the Deepings for over thirty years and two years ago retired from the Carousel Nursery. She missed the children though and so Little Linchfield became her focus and she also became a teaching assistant at the School. This issue is brim-full of people who make a difference to our community enriching us artistically, through their sporting feats and with attention to our spiritual and physical well being. Visitors to the Deeping St James Annual Parish meeting from other parts of the county are always impressed with the sense of community spirit that is almost palpable here. It has been said before but it bears saying again - it couldn’t be done without you!

A Country Diary
of a Deeping Fisherman Jack Geeves (1930-2006) was born in one of the two cottages in front of the windmill in Broadgate Lane. He remembered moving to Sydney House in Towngate West by horse and cart when he was just four years old. The house had no bathroom or indoor toilet, no water or electricity. Gas lights lit the kitchen and the sitting room and the other rooms were lit by candles or paraffin lamps. The house was cold and draughty and Jack would lie in bed and see the stars through the roof. Buckets stood everywhere to catch the rain coming in.
‘Jack was a painter and decorator but his passion was for fishing’
‘Dad built two pigsties and a chicken house and run. He repaired and cleaned the well and pump, for our drinking water, but couldn’t keep the toads out, and in the spring tadpoles would come into the bucket. There were six big apple trees and two plums. The bottom half was a vegetable garden all dug by hand, we grew cabbages, spuds, carrots, parsnips, peas, beans, beetroot, tomato and lettuce with no fertilisers, just compost and manure. Liquid feed was made by soaking sheep droppings in water and stirring each day, adding about a cup to a can of water.
‘Mum and dad were both very hardworking, Dad had been through the First World War and he lost two toes to frostbite in the trenches in France. After he broke his leg playing football for Deeping he had his leg in splints, he told me he went to work after about two weeks, but it didn’t set properly, making the one leg two inches shorter than the other. He was a stoker at Helpston Paper Mill on shifts with Jim Robertson and Jock Alexander, both from Deeping. He would spend several hours a day gardening with my help – we all had our jobs to do before and after school.’ Jack was a painter and decorator but his passion was for fishing and he spent many hours on the riverbank where he became familiar with the changing seasons and with the wildfowl, birds and other wildlife. He would sketch the scenes, birds, animals that he saw and later used these to embellish the diaries that he kept. Monday 26th September 1994 I started painting at Miss Neverson’s house in Rectory Lane Peakirk today. It’s a big house with a small garden surrounded by big trees; Yew, Sycamore, Beech and Birch etc. complete with Rook’s nests. In the trees were dozens of small birds, the ones I recognised were Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Blue Tits, Great Tits and Long-tails, Mistle and Song Thrush, Doves and a Spotted Flycatcher – it’s a joy to be working here! continued >

FEATURE Tuesday 12th March 1996 Last weekend of the fishing season, cold and windy, caught about six fish but saw the Kingfisher twice at Deeping bridge and then I moved to Greatford Cut, Lesser Celandine in flower everywhere, near the white bridge the banks were trodden down and muddy but lovely pink flowers of the Butterdown were still standing, no leaves yet. Two patches of frogspawn on the river. Sunday morning 26th May 1996 Had a fag and talk about fishing until we started a committee meeting to elect a new Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary, fix few match dates, outside bookings, work parties, ticket prices etc. I hope that’s the last meeting I will have to Chair, everything went well and the meeting finished about 1pm. I went on my own to look around another pit on East End road to see the young Geese, some now half grown, there were about 90 Goslings, Canada and Greylags all mixed up. I saw an Oystercatcher, Sand Martins, Swallows, Swifts and heard the Cuckoo several times. Back home for 2.00pm Sunday 16th June 1996 Danny Needham rang and would I like to see the spinney to look at Chub etc., couldn’t miss a chance like that. We were watching the Roach over Greatford Cut side, cars roaring past but the birdsong was unbelievable; Chaffinch, Wrens, Doves, Woodpigeon, Blackbird, Thrush, Reed Warblers, Moor Hens, Crows, Tits, Great and Long-tails Ducks and one little bird in the top of a big fir tree might have been a Goldcrest, couldn’t see him properly, too much sun for my field glasses. Walking through the trees with a younger man telling him how I learned to fish there in wartime with a hazelnut stick, stitching thread line, float goose feather and size 8 eel hook handmade painted black 4 a-penny lead from electric cable, bait bread or worm, all fish caught were eaten. My father used to give me sixpence to get him a bunch of bean sticks; he’d say at least a baker’s dozen, get a few extra cos 13 is unlucky. Saturday 22nd June 1996 Its carnival day in Deeping, must leave early to meet Tom Parker and his friend another naturalist who wants to look around ARC pit. We went all round the three pits, the thing that pleased him most was the bank and 14
dozens of Sand Martins nests, he said he hadn’t seen Sand Martins for about three years and then one flew into the wires and fell at my feet, he held it for about five minutes then it flew off. We saw Kingfisher, Reed Buntings and Oyster Catchers, Spotted Fly Catcher, Grebe and Cormorants, Red shank. Everything is drying out now we need some rain, the flowers just coming out consist of Weld, creeping Cinquefoil, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Wild Carrot, Field bindweed, Borage, Water figwort, Yellow toadflax, Pineapple Weed, Oxeye daisy, Ragwort and Knapweed. The only thing we didn’t agree on was White Campions and Bladder Campion, the walk took 2½-3 hours, he thanked me for a most interesting afternoon and left. I started fishing about 5pm, big Dennis had just caught a big Tench about 6½lbs, after about half an hour I caught a Perch nearly 2lb and soon after two Tench, one about 6 and the other 5lbs. Went home about 9.30pm the cold wind got up and cold, tired but very happy: my first fish of the season! Thursday 27th June 1996 Working at Mrs Ward’s garden. I cut the ivy off the front wall and found two more windows! Around the back it’s a beautiful wilderness, cultivated shrubs and flowers mixed with wild but planned for wildlife. I’m only allowed here because of my love for wildflowers and pond life. The day goes like this; ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’ I grin and we sit on the side of the raised pond to drink it. Water Crowfoot, Kingcups, Lillies and several Sedges and reeds in flower. Water gin clear in the sunshine. We could see millions of Water Fleas (Daphnia) lava of Damsel Flies, Water Boatmen, Skaters, Water Scorpion, Blood Worms, Freshwater Shrimp, Snails and hundreds of tadpoles, still very small. ‘I wonder if there’s enough food for them all? Have you got a bit of cat food?’ She dropped 2 bits about walnut size, one minute later you couldn’t see it, so many tadpoles on it, after five minutes it was all gone. An hour well spent and I’ll be paid! Extracts from a ‘Diary of a Country Fisherman’ by Jack Geeves courtesy of The Geeves Family. Illustrations: Jack Geeves The fishing rights on the River Welland through the Deepings are owned by Deeping St James Angling Club. Membership books are available from two local shops, Callows Confection shop in the Market Square and The Barbers Shop next to Terry Wrights Cycles. They can also be obtained from fishing tackle shops in Peterborough and Spalding or online from the clubs website at www.deepingstjamesanglingclub.co.uk Day tickets are also available on the bank from club bailiff ’s. With retirement Lorraine looked for a more sedentary pursuit and so took up art classes at the Riverbank Studios in Spalding with artist John Gray. DEEPINGS LITERARY FESTIVAL
Alison Weir
Ellie Sandall
Thoughts from the pages of the First Deepings Literary Festival I was one of the lucky residents of the Deepings who was kindly asked to help out and support the festival. It wasn’t even as an organiser or as one of the people everyone wants to grumble to. Rather I had a pretty special job and that was to host three marvellous authors at the Coronation Hall in Market Deeping. I only had to jump up a few times and welcome the kind people who had come along for the talks and make sure the authors had a good time. Saturday 29 April dawned rather sunny, one of those mornings where your first thought turns to the garden. I knew that wasn’t to be and I was going to be having much more fun. I arrived a bit early to the Coronation Hall and was soon putting the flags out and joining in with set up. The organisers knew we had good ticket sales and Diane (Wheatley) who had baked all the cakes to raise money for Macmillan had clearly got Karen Maitland
the message that plenty of people might be coming. Walkers Books of Stamford unloaded what appeared to be several vanfuls of books onto groaning tables. The scene was set and as the clock ticked closer to 10am, our first author of the day, Karen Maitland, arrived. She took us all back to the Middle Ages, a dark time of deep religion, belief in the supernatural and one where the distinction between fact and fantasy was not always made. Karen, who has been writing for 21 years, has crafted the murder and magic of the medieval period into seven thrillers. Her dark reads from the Middle Ages use historical facts and her quests explore superstition and paranoia and how they can give rise to fear – even our modern scientific world is still fascinated by tarot cards, vampires and ghosts. Karen’s novels don’t divide the world into real and unreal, angels and demons, werewolves and sea monsters, which were just as much a part of medieval daily life in people’s minds as cooking and farming. A hugely fascinating period bought amazingly to life and Karen even managed to turn the head on the rat being the baddy of the story! continued >

DEEPINGS LITERARY FESTIVAL
A quick turnaround of the room and a queue of people outside the door meant that our second author of the morning was preparing. One of those expected technical hitches occurred around a HDMI cable and connecting computers; speedily resolved, it meant we were on track to start at 11.30. The hall was busy with another 70 or so local people.

Ruby Carlisle
Martin Davies was on stage next and it would be fair to say he came to words later in life. His difficult school days on the Wirral fired him to prove his teachers wrong that one day he would put ink to paper. His inspiration for writing came from one of the most famous detectives in history and the lady who looked after him. Mrs Hudson, of course, the long suffering housekeeper of Sherlock Holmes, gave rise to a series of novels by Martin. Martin’s talk was about what finds itself going around those words when they are printed: the cover. A more entertaining presentation would be hard to find. Authors, we discovered, get very little choice and covers both appropriate and inappropriate may be used by publishers. Everyone in the room had tears of laughter running down their cheeks as he
Louise Doughty
showed images of more and more strange combinations of cover illustrations and titles. I have to say that now, when I judge a book by its cover, I will spare a little more thought for the author and story behind it. A much needed lunch break came before we met our next fascinating author, Lynn Knight, at 2pm. Since arriving in the Deepings only 18 months ago my fascination with the lives of the family who built and ran the building which I live in has drawn me into telling the tale, with others, of the ordinary milling lives of the Molecey family. Lynn shares my passion for social history. Using notebooks, domestic objects and even buttons, her stories explore how everyday objects relate people to their domestic lives. As I have realised telling a story using only a few documents, photos or letters is one which takes considerable skill. In her book Lemon Sherbet and Dolly Blue: The Story of an Accidental Family, from which she read on the day, Lynn makes a great success of a memoir of three generations of her own family, with many adopted members, in and around Chesterfield in Derbyshire. It was a fantastic day and one I was so pleased to have played a small part in. Only a few cakes and books remained at the end so the turnout had been amazing. For me, I could go home, but for the organisers the next event at St. Guthlac’s Church was only just around the corner.

I hope the success of the first Festival will ensure its return in 2019 and I for one can’t thank the organising team enough for making this magic happen. Graham Magee The Granary West Deeping

WILLOW TREE FEN
Amanda Jenkins reports on Willow Tree Fen - a wildlife haven on our doorstep! Willow Tree Fen is a Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve in South Lincolnshire. It’s a wonderful place to visit and spend time relaxing and enjoying the rare and unique fenland landscape.
can be viewed from the 6km of waymarked routes and bird hides. There’s an interpretation and education area near the main buildings. There are also accessible toilets.
Nestling quietly amongst expansive agricultural fields, underneath the big open Lincolnshire skies Willow Tree Fen harks back to a lost fenland landscape.
At one time the south Lincolnshire fens were a wilderness landscape. Less than 0.1% of Lincolnshire’s former 1,000 km2 of ‘wildfenland’ remains, and many species associated with wetland habitats are lost, rare or threatened. These include the large iconic fenland birds like bittern, crane and spoonbill.
The nature reserve has been transformed from intensive arable land growing beans and cereal crops to a more extensive grazed agricultural landscape of shallow meres, seasonally flooded pastures, hay meadows and reedbeds. It’s only 15 minutes’ drive from Market Deeping. Birds, dragonflies and beautiful fenland plants and scenery
Birds at Willow Tree Fen These species and other rarities still make an occasional appearance in and around Willow Tree Fen. The European crane has been seen flying over the reserve over the past three years and, in early May 2017, they landed! They were even seen flying in Baston High Street. Other birds at Willow Tree include widgeon, teal, shoveller, whooper swans, marsh harrier, garganey, bean geese, the list goes on. In 2010 a glossy ibis visited, and in 2015 a female redfooted falcon spent three weeks at the fen attracting over 1000 visitors. On 10 February 2017 a male bluethroat appeared; a very rare visitor to the UK. During his six-week stay he attracted around 11,000 visitors to this usually quiet fenland reserve Baston Fen Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Baston and Thurlby Fen Site
of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The last remnants of Lincolnshire’s wild fenlands can be found within the two nationally internationally important nature reserves of Baston & Thurlby Fen, which are only three miles west of Willow Tree. At 55 hectares, these areas are too small to support some of the larger fenland birds and other species. They are both well worth a visit. In June, iris can be enjoyed at Baston Fen and both reserves offer views from the bank top across the fenland farmlands and walks through intimate, cool, shaded areas where damselflies and dragonflies dart across clear pools of open water and reedbeds. Waterways in the fens The River Glen, Counter Drain and other fenland waterways provide wildlife corridors with fantastic plant diversity, which are not always obvious as we drive past them. Rivers and drains in this area are havens for plants and animals and allow movement continued >

GRASMERE
More than just meat- Grasmere also sells cheese which includes Lincolnshire cheeses such as Cote Hill Blue and Lincolnshire Poacher.
Grasmere Farm Traditional Butchers - 10 years in Market Deeping a look back at a Deeping business In years gone by the Deepings, like many towns and villages, were blessed with many butchers’ shops about the place. By the 2000s this had dwindled to just one, owned by Fred Sandall, which also included a Freezer shop (remember them?). The nation had fallen out of love with butchers and fallen in love with supermarkets and it appeared the Deepings were no different. In 2007 Sandalls in Market Gate, Market Deeping was taken over by Stuart Stables and renamed ‘Grasmere Farm Traditional Butchers’. Grasmere Farm, which is down Station Road in Deeping St James , had a farm shop on site but Stuart saw an excellent opportunity to provide his customer base with more than just pork. So it is that June this year see’s Grasmere celebrating 10 years in its flagship shop. Of course before the shop was opened the business has a near 50 year history. The Stables family has farmed the land around Deeping St James, South Lincolnshire since 1969. The farm has seen good times and bad, notably in the late 1980s, when the viability of pig farming was at a low and Stuart found he had a large sow that couldn’t produce piglets.
As Stuart’s usual buyer would only pay half the price for this sow, which was a poor deal for such good quality meat, Alf, a local butcher, suggested that it would be better for Stuart to have a go at making his own sausages. Together, they hatched a plan to use the ‘barren gilt’ to make Lincolnshire Sausage, using Alf ’s own traditional recipe. This proved to be a pivotal moment in the history of Grasmere as Stuart found that the sausages he sold to friends and family were a big hit. Over the following weeks there were constant requests for him to make more sausages and Stuart quickly established a reputation for producing tasty wholesome pork sausages. Naturally, having built such a good reputation other products soon followed. Outlets for selling Grasmere products in the early days included pubs and restaurants and market stalls. In fact Stuart designed and built his own market stalls back when the idea of ‘from farm to fork’ hadn’t even been thought of- Grasmere was one of the first and still to this day goes to markets around East Anglia and East Midlands, even doing several weekly markets in London. continued >

GRASMERE
In the last 10 years Grasmere has also opened shops in Stamford and Peterborough. Sausages and various cooked goodies such as Scotch Eggs and Sausage Rolls can now be found in Co-ops and Lincolnshire Sausages can even be found in Morrison’s!
of beef and East Anglian Lamb and Chickens is required.
It’s fair to say over the last 10 years there have been a bit of a renaissance in butchers shops throughout Britain. It would appear the consumer has fallen back in love with the butcher, though the supermarket is of course still king and there have been some dramatic differences in shopping habits as well. When Grasmere first took over in 2007, the only flavoured products in the shop were Chinese style Ribs, Chicken Stir Fry and Lemon and Coriander Chicken Breast. Now it is all about the convenience and if it isn’t flavoured and in an oven ready tray then who wants to know? The colours and different flavours displayed in the counters are much more exciting than 10 years ago.
Just a small range of the counter display in the shop- both traditional cuts and ready prepared meals made in the store.
A big moment in the shops’ 10 years came last spring when both Deeping and Stamford stores were awarded with Q Trying to keep fresh talent coming into the Guild status. The Q trade, Dave was trained in Deeping shop before Guild is a prestigious becoming manager of Stamford shop where he organisation with just has grown the shop tremendously. over 100 members (out of 6000 independent butchers nationwide) which to gain membership of was a really proud moment. It’s hard work gaining membership of this exclusive group and involves being of a high standard at every step. Full traceability of the dry-aged British breeds 32
So it’s clear that things have changed over the years at Grasmere but what makes a shop successful in this day and age of internet and cheap multiples? Simple- people and location. The Market Gate itself is a lovely setting and the relationship between the shops is brilliant. Shoppers go from one shop to another and then to Lilli’s Tearoom and probably finish with Grasmere.
The customers themselves are loyal and the butchers remains one of those shops where you can pop in and see a familiar, friendly face that will provide good service and advice as well as banter when appropriate! Two members of staff, Will and Joe, have been working at the shop since Grasmere took over in 2007. To celebrate Grasmere’s 10th Anniversary in Market Gate, there will be a BBQ on Saturday 17th and the Bullnose Morris Cowley Grasmere Van will also be present. This is in collaboration with Lilli’s Tea Room which is celebrating their 3rd birthday with live entertainment. There will also be special offers all week and a chance to win a £100 Grasmere Voucher.
Grasmere still dry ages all it’s beef for steaks and joints on the bone for at least three weeks. Wrapped in muslin cloth, this traditional process helps add to the depth of flavour of the native breeds used.
Grasmere’s latest addition to the fleet- a Bullnose Morris Cowley which should be present at our birthday event in June.

The Carnival
CARNIVAL
After the First World War records show that a Carnival was held in Market Deeping each year. The earliest newspaper article reporting events appeared in 1925 when a dance was held at the White Horse Assembly Rooms to raise money. Henry Smith was MC and at least 120 people attended with Mr Pycock’s band providing the music and Mrs Steele the refreshments. The Carnival itself consisted of side shows and games in the White Horse Public House field and people from all the local villages came along to try their luck at hoopla, skittles and the coconut shy. There were pony rides for children and a fancy dress competition for both adults and children. By the 1930s there were floats, mostly decorated horse and carts with the occasional decorated lorry. A Carnival Queen was chosen: in 1937 Miss Rachel Horn and in 1938 Miss Rose Fowler of Eastgate, Deeping St James. The custom died out during the Second World War but in 1971 a float was decorated to advertise the Rose and Sweet Pea Show in Deeping St James. The wagon was loaned and driven by Mr C.T. Harlock of Thorney. This was so well received that a committee was set up to organise a Deepings Carnival led by Mr Jack Battle and the second of these was held on 22 June 1974.
Priory Players 1974
The Lincs Free Press reported that brilliant sunshine greeted the large number of visitors, a grander occasion than the previous year. There were many willing helpers and with their collecting tins among the crowd a large amount was raised for the new Health Centre (now the Community Centre). Twenty-two floats assembled in Towngate by 2.15pm waiting to be judged by Mrs Douglas (widow of Dr Charles Douglas) and Mr David Young (editor of The Lincs Free Press) and their task was very difficult as every entry deserved a prize. The winners were the Deeping Playgroup whose float was decorated with 800 handmade flowers. The procession was led off by the Carnival Queen’s Float, Ann Bedford and her attendants, Fleur Warriner and Jacqueline Battle. Accompanied by the Peterborough Pipe Band and the Spalding British Legion Band, the parade made its way down Church Street Market Deeping through
the market place and onto Horsegate at Deeping St James senior School where the school fete was being held. In June 1978 the tug of war over the river at the Boundary Fish and Chip Shop was a big hit at the Carnival, with Tony Martin and Peter Bennett charged with ensuring fair play. Ten teams were entered, The Bull Hotel, Deeping Life Saving Group, Pigeon Inn Spalding, White Horse Inn, Deeping Police, Deeping Youth Club, Baker Perkins Rugby Club, Rose Inn Frognall, the ‘nursery nutters’ from Deeping St James Nursery, and Palmer & Harvey wholesalers. The prize was a firkin of ale and a silver cup and was won by the Rose at Frognall; for the girls Palmer & Harvey won the tug against the ‘nutters’. The greasy pole was conquered and won by Everitt Jackson on his second attempt, in 3 minutes and 21
seconds. The day continued with roast ox and ale, a fete at the Deepings School and the annual Carnival Parade with 40 floats entered by local traders and continued >

CARNIVAL organisations with the theme of fairy tales and nursery rhymes. A market run by local clubs and societies was held in the morning and a youth jamboree, dances and street parties was held in the evening. A decade later in 1987 the sun shone on the Deepings annual Carnival organised by the Deeping Lions and the Market Deeping Scouts & Guides with the Parade led by 13 floats. They left Back Lane Deeping St James and their route carved through Deeping St James and Market Deeping to the Scout HQ in Wellington Way where a garden fete was held in the afternoon. The Carnival had been organised by David Wilson
(Chairman and Parade Leader) Sheila Prince (Secretary) and Kate Morris (Treasurer). The Carnival Queen was Lisa Kent attended by Ellen Morris and Claire Wilson and the floats were judged by Jack and Jessie Battle and Pat Abel. The theme was cartoon characters and the winners were Deeping St James Priory Players with Captain Pugwash as their theme. The float depicted the Captain’s vessel, The Black Pig, complete with masts, sails and gun ports, and was occupied by an assortment of pirates and other unsavoury looking characters. This year the Carnival parade will leave the Leisure Centre Car Park at 11.00am and will join the Carnival held on the John Eve Playing Field on Godsey Lane. This year the theme is the Vikings and a reenactment will take place on the Field. Research: Joy Baxter Words: Judy Stevens

BATEMANS SALES REPORT
Batemans in Stamford, a town renowned for its Georgian architecture turned up trumps this May with a complete set of Georgian playing cards, that sold for £3,600. Similar to a set held by the British Museum, it is rare to find English playing cards of this date at all, but to find a complete set of fifty-two playing cards each individually copper plate engraved with satirical text and pictures in near perfect condition is extraordinary and took the deck well over the estimate of £200-£300, finally selling Half.qxp 10/08/2016 11:00 Page 1 the phone11:00 to a delighted buyer for £3,600 Half.qxpon10/08/2016 Page 1
There was fierce competition too for this wonderfully evocative portrait of Lady Black by Cowan Dobson. Renowned as a portrait painter, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, works by the artist are proving collectable, which together with the stunning subject no doubt helped this painting to an above estimate £1050.
The Georgian theme was repeated throughout the sale from silver to furniture with this stunning pair of George III candlesticks going for £850 and in the furniture section a Regency mahogany scroll end settee which sold for £720. Batemans is also becoming known as the go to saleroom for Vaseline glass light shades. Hot on the heels of their success selling a pair last year, this pair of Art Nouveau teardrop shades sold for £1,000, well over the estimate of £200-£300.

Good sleep is a vital part of staying healthy. Research shows that poor quality sleep can have a significant affect on our health, contributing to obesity, diabetes and a shortened lifespan. Here are 5 ways to help you get a better sleep Establish a going to bed routine, for example having a warm bath or shower, reading a little. Switch off the TV 30 minutes before sleep time. Avoid caffeine, alcohol or food for a couple of hours before bedtime. If you can’t get to sleep after 30 minutes, get up and try again after doing something simple like washing up or reading something that you find boring (there’s sense in the counting sheep technique).
Anxiety at not being able to sleep can be worse if you are watching the hours tick by; avoid clock watching, turn the alarm clock away from sight. Avoid day time catch up naps. This can establish a pattern of poor night time sleep. Kath Piper, Piper Physiotherapy. Go to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy; find out how Physiotherapy can help you lead a healthier lifestyle. www.csp.org.uk/yourhealth
To get a good night’s sleep, avoid the use of screens in the hour or so before bed, be physically active during the day, avoid stimulants like alcohol and caffeine, especially in the evening. Stay hydrated and reduce sugar in your diet. At bed time use breathing techniques that get you to focus on your breath. Sleeping, but disturbed by vivid dreams or night sweats or waking unrefreshed? Try acupuncture treatments. Studies have shown it promotes deeper relaxation and sleep. Marianne Killick Acupuncturist BA(Hons), MSc, PG DipAc, MBAcC Tel : 07790 036333 Often when we are not able to sleep it’s because of the busy thoughts racing in our minds, or our bodies still feeling tense from the daily build up of mental and physical stress. Teaching our mind and body to relax at the same time helps our body shut down the stress chemicals releasing into our bloodstream. Create a bedtime routine to help your mind and body reconnect. When you get into bed, spend a few minutes focused on your breathing. Inhale deeply, counting to five, and exhaling slowly counting to five. Noticing how with each breath your mind and body relax even more deeply. Sometimes adding a blanket to your bed can offer an extra layer of weighted protection to send you off into a deeper sleep.

Five great ways
to get to
sleep
Research shows that adults in Britain are some of the most sleep deprived in the world! Here are some tips as to how we can reverse that trend from some of Deepings top Practioners Get into bed and get comfy - lie without crossing your legs or ankles. Close your eyes, then slowly breathe in and out through your nose, right down into your tummy. Use gentle determination to keep your attention on your breath. If your attention wanders away, don’t worry, just bring it back and try again. (With practise, it becomes much easier.) Repeat the mantra in your head “Breathe in calm, breathe out stress”. Sync the breath with the mantra. Try to build up your time to a few minutes of focusing on your breath. If you have trouble keeping your attention on your breath for very long, start with these breaths, then when calm, use your imagination to take yourself away to a tranquil place such as a beautiful beach. Doze, then sleep in your tranquil place. To learn these techniques in full, try one of my yoga classes. Cheryl Baskeyfield. 0758 770 9270 e:cheryl@cherylfitness.co.uk, fb: Cheryl’s Fitness and Yoga
If you are awake, you are much more likely to snack, going to bed earlier is a great reason to avoid doing this. It is recommended that you eat about 2 hours before bed.

Steer clear of high fat fried foods. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol and fizzy drinks. Meanwhile, eating too much sugar could result in more midnight wakeups. LONELINESS
How well connected are we in our local community? For many people, the Deepings is a safe and friendly place to live and socialise. We have the choice of a really good range of local shops, pubs, clubs, and activities suitable for all ages. Our parks, playgrounds and riversides are popular locations for families, walkers and dog owners. According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK is the loneliest country in the EU. This has far reaching effects on physical and mental health, with increased risk of disability, cognitive decline, dementia and mortality. In the light of this, is it possible to live in the Deepings and still feel isolated or lonely? If so, how can we improve the situation for ourselves and for others? Initially it is important to separate individual circumstances from how we actually feel about our circumstances. 46
Living on your own does not necessarily mean being lonely. Similarly, living with others does not safeguard you from feeling lonely at times. Someone who lives alone may be quite happy and settled, whilst individual family members may experience periods of loneliness even within a busy household. Curiously, feeling lonely can arise from having too little to do, or from simply being too busy to stop, slow down and communicate with others. Social media can also be a help and a hindrance depending on how it is used. A sense of isolation can affect anyone at some time in their life, and for others it can be a long-term way of life to cope with. Feeling lonely can sometimes seem out of character and be a symptom of physiological issues such as stress, the menopause, medication or dietary changes. It can also arise through life changes such as childbirth,
additional caring responsibilities, bereavement, children leaving home, retirement. If you know someone who is withdrawing from normal social interaction or has a history of loneliness, now could be the time to be a good friend and offer a listening ear.
Combatting loneliness is essential for the health and well-being of our community and if we all make the effort to play a small part, the collective effect will be of benefit to us and will positively transform the lives of others.
There are many opportunities in the Deepings for getting out and about, meeting people, forming new friendships if you want to. People who feel shy or isolated are less likely to join a new group or make friends on their own so may appreciate being taken and introduced to others. In June, perhaps we could all schedule some quiet time to consider who we see regularly and who we talk to in our neighbourhood. We might like to reflect on how many of our near neighbours we can name, and also identify who we recognise and chat to when out and about in Deeping.
