It was 1895 and mining engineer Charles Alfred King, from Sheffield, was encouraged by his brother to follow him to Rhodesia. Charles worked on various mines and when new machinery was needed it was ordered from Peter Brotherhoods in Peterborough. The high cost of manufacture and shipping necessitated onsite inspections and Charles King made several trips to Peterborough to do this; in fact with his wife and baby daughter, May eleven Atlantic crossings were made before May was eleven. While in the UK they rented a house for the duration. It was during a visit in 1919 when they rented Meadow House, Deeping Gate that Emily May (known as May) met local grocery boy, Walter Smith, just 19 years old. The couple fell in love, incurring the disapproval of Emily’s parents, and she had to choose between Walter or return to Rhodesia with them. She chose to stay. Walter and May rented a small house at 9 High Street, Market Deeping. Walter was prepared to do anything to earn money and eventually worked for Barsby’s grocery in the High Street, where he learned to drive a Model T Ford. This was very useful because in 1923 he was able to get a job as a driver for Morley’s buses. There were a number of privately owned bus services but no timetables; it was a race between the companies to get to the waiting passengers first and collect the fares. It was while driving the bus that Walter noticed that a lot of houses had a long wire going from the house high up down the garden. Curious, he found out that these were attached to a radio set. As there was no electricity the radios needed two dry batteries and an accumulator (like a small car battery) which needed to be recharged once a week. Someone was collecting 4d or 6d a week for this service and Walter saw the opportunity. He bought a second-hand charging set and after his day’s work on the buses got into his motorcycle and sidecar and canvassed for business; the first week he managed to convert just four customers. Undeterred, he persevered and business grew. These batteries had to be put on charge as soon as he returned home. Customers, mainly farm workers without cars were very dependent on traders bringing their wares to the door, butchers, bakers, milkmen all delivered. Walter proved to be reliable. As well as accumulators, the radios needed HT and grid-bias batteries periodically and these sales were welcomed. Trade grew and soon Walter was supplying other household items. He bought
a small van and developed further accumulator rounds, collecting and redelivering six days a week. In 1931 Walter built a wooden two display-window shop at the side of the house selling radios and cycles plus the batteries for lanterns and torches etc. In 1934 as recorded in May’s carefully kept diary, Walter was finally able to leave Morleys. Later in 1941 an extra window was added to the original shop where tin kettles, saucepans, buckets, baths of various sizes, towels, cloths and general kitchen equipment were now stocked. During World War II, Walter and his son Kenneth both worked in munitions. Severe petrol rationing meant problems for the deliveries. There was a shortage of male employees, so young women were employed, and they used a milk float and heavy horse to deliver the accumulators. This went quite well; May had a way with horses and would harness the outfit and send them on their way. However, one day the girls had reached the end of their round at Spalding Common when the horse decided it would not turn round to come home! A panic call was made. May caught the only bus to Spalding, took hold of the bridle and the horse, and the trio arrived back home late but safe! At the end of the war, Walter bought a large wooden chicken shed from Peakirk. This was added to the existing shop, which now featured seven windows. With the added floor space, furniture and lino rugs could be sold. The shop sign stated Complete House Furnishers. Paint and distemper (before emulsion) mirrors, pictures etc. were also sold. In 1947 after very heavy snows, the thaw came and the River Welland, burst its bank and the High Street was flooded to a depth of four feet. The house and shop were awash with floating kettles and saucepans. Of course, the shop had to bear the brunt of the flood, and many items were destroyed, unfit for sale. In the same year an ex-Ministry mobile canteen was purchased. Walter cut six square holes in each side, made window frames in the cut-outs and boxed the rear to make display windows. This was one of the earliest mobile shops. Walter’s son Kenneth drove this around the local villages offering a huge range of goods. When the BBC started transmitting TV signals from Sutton Coldfield, Smiths entered the TV market. Supply of sets was very limited and to advertise, Smiths’ own set was placed in the window of their house to enable viewers outside to see whilst the family continued >

FEATURE watched the reflection. Walter could see a future in television and encouraged his son Roger to apply to Pye in Cambridge to train as an engineer. In 1952, earning just £2 a week, Roger started a five-year apprenticeship. His lodgings cost more than his wages, and he returned home each weekend by bus, but his father subsidised him just enough to get by. Whilst in Cambridge Roger met Julia, a switchboard operator for Pye; the couple married on 22 August 1957. When he received his City & Guilds Certificate Roger was one of only 230 engineers in the country. He came to work for his father alongside a second TV engineer. Servicing equipment in the home gave him the opportunity to make new sales. Smiths gave an excellent after sales service. Covering a wide area their boast was to repair the fault the same day if notified before four o’clock! Smiths also used to erect TV aerials and signals from independent television and this was the next boost to aerial and TV sales. In 1964 the original house and the first two wooden shops were demolished and a steel and brick structure erected, giving a much larger May with parents on Zambezi River sales area plus a workshop and office. Displays of beds and hard and soft furniture, toys and fancy goods were added to the stock. Smiths were quick to embrace colour television when it first made an appearance. Supply was limited and quite expensive, but they could easily sell as many as they were allocated. At this point Smiths registered as a limited company, Walter, Kenneth and Roger named as directors. Two cottages at the rear of the shop stopped further expansion, but in 1973 one cottage was bought and converted into a workshop, allowing more space for a bigger selection of furniture and bedding. Walter died in 1969, and in 1976 Roger bought his brother’s share of the business, and Julia joined Roger in the main store. In 1981 the second cottage at the rear was eventually bought and both cottages demolished allowing a huge expansion of the shop. At that time Peterborough became the fastest growing city in Europe, as many international names 12
relocated to the city, bringing with them the majority of their employees. These people looked to live locally and Deeping was a popular choice. Smiths’ goods were sold at very competitive prices and business boomed. While remaining loyal to British TV manufacturers for many years, Roger saw the reliability of Japanese brands. Mitsubishi was the first manufacturer to offer a five-year guarantee and Smiths were so successful with the brand that they were taken to Japan for 13 days to see various divisions of the company. Smiths attributed this success to heavily advertising Mitsubishi’s five-year guarantee on local radio and regularly taking space on the back page of three local papers. Smiths’ pricing policy with furniture was very competitive. It was one of the first companies to advertise: ‘Don’t throw your old suite away; we’ll give you up to £300.00 for it.’ Unbelievably, in the first week of this offer, they sold and took orders for 32 three-piece suites. On the 50th anniversary of the business in 1981, the final extension was made, nearly doubling the floor area. Roger and Julia headed up a loyal team, including their cousin Terrence, Kenneth Clayton, Carol Purlant and Elaine King. The late Iris Cooper, who had worked for Smiths for 38 years, was in charge of accounts with Keith Gill, Reg Walker, Eddie Bradbury in servicing. Other staff members were Hazel Partridge, Jo Clifton, Kath Lansell and Gill Ward. Smiths Unique really was a one off and enjoyed a golden period of success in the Deepings with customers coming from far and wide but when son, Andrew was not interested in taking the business forward, Roger sold the store leaving for a villa near Mijas golf course in Spain. After nearly 18 years, one day, Julia Smith looked up and said “Do you know? I’d rather be in Deeping” and so they came home!

Grimethorpe Colliery Band Nothing says Christmas more in the Deepings than a visit from the Grimethorpe Colliery Band! Described by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies as ‘the finest jewel in the world of brass bands and a unique cultural asset’ there is nothing like the trill of the trumpet to welcome in Christmas!
were still employed in Grimethorpe Colliery. The news came five days before the National Brass Band championships at the Royal Albert Hall and was a body blow to the workers. Nevertheless in their inimitable style they triumphed to become the Champion Band of Great Britain.
Next year will be the centenary year for the band, which was formed during World War I as a leisure activity for workmen deep in the South Yorkshire coalfield at Grimethorpe Colliery. The Band won its first contest in 1918 in Manchester and continued to be successful for several years. However, the turning point for the band came in 1972 when Elgar Howarth was appointed as professional conductor and musical advisor, which led to the band commissioning new works by composers such as Hans Werner Henze and Sir Harrison Birtwistle.
Over the years the Band has become a British institution with no event of any note complete without them. They have performed at the FIFA World Cup, the BAFTAs, BBC Proms, Eurovision and the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. They are regulars on both the national and international stage with radio and TV recordings and are the proud recipients of two gold discs as well as a BAFTA nomination for their contribution to the global hit movie Brassed Off in 1995 for which Grimethorpe was the focal point. The film was reviewed in Time Out: ‘Tompkinson, Postlethwaite and Carter are standouts in an impressive ensemble cast, but for many the brass music of Grimethorpe comes as the real revelation.’
In 1992 when the Government announced its programme of pit closures, 17 members of the Band
The Band has been variously sponsored by the Coal Board and by mining engineers, R.J. Budge. Now their main sponsors are Dransfield Properties. Generations of families have been involved in the band, which now numbers 30 members who come from all over the country; the North East, Midlands, the East Coast and Bishop Auckland. Their Musical Director, Dr Robert 14
Childs, is from South Wales. The youngest band member is in their twenties and the oldest in their late eighties and so the commitment to practising two nights a week is considerable! Stirring and at times mournful, a brass band stirs the emotions like no other form of music and this band has delighted audiences all over the world including in the Royal Albert Hall, the Symphony Hall, the Barbican, Westminster Abbey, the European Parliament and the Sydney Opera House. Travelling to all corners of the globe the Band has toured Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and has played in concerts and festivals throughout Europe. Most recently the band has been playing with the vivacious Opera Babes under their associate Conductor, Brian Grant. The Band, though, remains true to its heartland through supporting musical initiatives for young people and in community performances in its home

village of Grimethorpe, close by Barnsley and more generally in South Yorkshire. Award winning, the band now goes into the 2016 Brass in Championships under their conductor and one of the best-known names in the brass band world, Philip McCann. The words of Upton Primary School pupils penned in 2003 sum up both Yorkshire and the Band and are a fitting way to anticipate kicking off Christmas in Deeping, Grimethorpe style!
Yorkshire When you have seen the rain and the sun-drenched hills of the Pennines, And the rolling Dales with bubbling stream, When you’ve seen the magnificent construction of the Humber Bridge Or the dark, derelict mills of a bygone but n’er forgotten age Transformed into modern splendour Then you’ve a heart as big as Yorkshire.
When you’ve heard the crashing cages of descending miners The pride, pain and passion of their struggle, And the echoes of the clattering tools of black gold When you’ve heard the blessed sounds of Grimethorpe Brass And the triumphal cries of musical and sporting heroes Then you’ve a heart as big as Yorkshire When you’ve smelt the white rose or pudding rise When you’ve felt the joy and celebration of winning Or the golden sands of Bridlington between your toes, When you’ve felt the sense of belonging Or the warmth of a friendly northern welcome Then you’ve a heart as big as Yorkshire.

SHORT STORY
The tobacco tin By Susan Hibbins Edward Miller was packing up, ready to leave. Or rather, his daughter was doing the packing. Edward was ploughing his way through a lifetime of paperwork and possessions, most of which would now have to be left behind. Letters he had kept for years were shredded; old cheque book stubs and bank books piled up together and burned. Edward felt as if his life was disappearing before his eyes. At the back of a drawer in his desk he found his battered old sketch book, full of his own drawings of flowers. This he would take with him, he thought, and his old tobacco tin. No one would take those from him. They were not large items; there would be room. He had used his tobacco tin since his twenties, rolling his own thin cigarettes for years, ignoring busybodies who told him to stop. It was part of him, and he would not throw it out now. When his daughter produced suitcases to pack his clothes he slipped his notebook and tobacco tin amongst the pullovers and trousers. His daughter helped him to choose family photographs, one or two pieces of china, some books. Then he was ready. She would deal with the furniture when her father was settled, and then the house, with all its past life and memories, would be sold.
sweetheart,’ she said, and put the cup down on the table. She noticed the tobacco tin and picked it up. ‘What a lovely tin!’ she exclaimed. ‘Flowers all the way round, how nice. What’s it for, Edward?’ ‘Tobacco. I keep my tobacco in it.’ ‘Ugh, smelly stuff! You won’t be able to smoke in here, you know. Fancy keeping horrible tobacco in a lovely tin like that. Where’d you get it, an antique shop?’ ‘I’ve had it for many years.’
In his new home, now reduced to one room and a bathroom, Edward was helped with unpacking his things, then he sat and looked at the view from his window. The garden was well laid out with lawns and flower beds. His room was light and airy; he had a large TV and a bookcase. He had put his sketchbook away in a drawer and his tobacco tin near to him, on a little table. He would be all right here, he thought, he would get used to it. He had known worse places. A young woman in a bright uniform knocked at the door and came in carrying a cup of tea. ‘Here you go, 18
‘Have you? Might be worth a bit, you know, it looks old to me. Not for tobacco now, though. What about sweets? You could put boiled sweets in it instead!’ She laughed, pleased with her idea, patted Edward on the shoulder, and went out. Edward picked up the tobacco tin and held it for a time, tracing with his finger the flower shapes engraved on it They matched one of the pictures in his sketchbook. He remembered the day when, pencil
in hand, he had sat down in the sunshine, seeking solitude and distraction, having a smoke in the summer air. Days later, when he was satisfied with the drawing, he began, slowly and patiently, to engrave the same pattern on to the metal. The blacksmith helped him by making a lid to fit and polishing up the flower shapes. Now this unknown woman wanted him to keep sweets in it. Edward slept, his hands still holding the tin. He fell into a familiar, uneasy dream: of terrifying noise, of smoke and endless explosions. He saw again his best friend blown in two; he smelt the blood and the fear, heard the anguished screams of injured men and horses, the pleas for help at night from the wounded no one could reach. He saw himself, shot, crawling into a shell hole for protection, sent back behind the lines to hospital, the trembling shock continuing long after his wound was healed. He saw again the sketchbook placed into his hand by an understanding doctor. ‘Try to draw,’ he said, ‘try to take your mind off it.’ And so he had drawn his flowers. And then drawn them again on the shell case he had found, out there in no man’s land.

FEATURE BARGAIN HUNTING
Hunting for bargains in Deeping Two teams from Deeping spend a fruitful hour at Market Deeping antiques and craft centre to seek out three items each to sell later at auction for charity. Oakham girl, Jessica Wall has had an illustrious career in art and antiques, specialising in Early English Furniture; her knowledge is much in demand and she has worked at Bonhams in London and Wilkinsons in Yorkshire. She also practised as a lawyer but the atmosphere of the sale room lured her back and she has now opened her own auction house, The Stamford Auction Rooms in Little Bytham. When presented with the opportunity to guide two couples buying three vintage items each from Market Deeping Antiques and Craft Centre, each given £50 by I‘d rather be in Deeping, Jessica jumped at the chance. Each team of two chose their own charity. The cream team; Pat Abel and U3A colleague Josie Waghorne (above) supported the Motor Neurone Disease
Association in honour of Josie’s late and much-loved brother, John Fisher of Frognall. The grey team, right, represented by Town Councillor and Chairman of Deepings Heritage David Shelton and his wife Nicki, chose La Tour de Marsh to support. Deeping lad Steve Marsh who sustained life-changing injuries when involved in a cycle accident earlier this year and funds are now being raised to help to modify the home he shares with Sam Eve Marsh. Josie and Pat were quick off the mark with their first choice, a pair of brass scales with an intact set of weights. Jessica advised that the piece dated from the early twentieth century and with an image of the Coliseum etched into it was likely to be of Continental origin. With a little bartering they secured their first purchase for £14. Nicki and David had meanwhile selected an intriguing brass pot with the old plague doctor’s mask, seeming continued >

BARGAIN HUNTING condition the velvet cushion had been replaced and was bought for £13. A model bi-plane was the third choice of Market Deeping couple Nicki and David. Jessica announced that it could be used as a paperweight; it was attached to an agate base and at just £10 would make a great Christmas present for a plane enthusiast!

at the Cavern! Jessica loved the plate too, which was mid-1960’s transferware. At the negotiated price of £28.60 the plate will be a hit among those of a certain age!
Back with the cream team, a delightful pair of Edwardian etched decanters had been picked up. The pair had perfect stoppers and were in very good condition. They would add real class to your Christmas table, especially filled with red wine! The intrepid pair negotiated a price of just £20 for the two decanters.
The cream team concluded their selection with a pin cushion, not too unexpected given Pat’s prowess as a needlewoman. The charming shoe was made of silvered metal and retained its original shoelace. Jessica shared their enthusiasm for this quirky piece. In good
David was reminded of his youth when he came upon this Beatles plate with not a little nostalgia for his days

WEST DEEPING REMEMBERS
West Deeping remembers 1914 to 1918 Do you remember the fascinating exhibition The Deepings Remember 1914 to 1918, two years ago at the Deepings Community Centre? The focal point was the Deepings Roll of Honour - recording 420 men whose names had been found in official archives, newspapers and family memorabilia. West Deeping Heritage Group has been doing some more research...
By November 1916, two years after the start of the First World War, at least 44 men from the Deepings had been killed in action. Over the last two years, West Deeping has been researching men from their village and commemorating the centenaries of their deaths. Those who gave their lives are listed on the brass plaque in St Andrew’s Church. The first name is Joseph Anstee, who proved to be one of the easiest to research - census records revealed exactly where he lived. Ginnie Cook, of West Deeping Mill, felt very moved when she discovered that Joseph was the youngest son of the miller who lived in her house between 1880 and 1919. He was born in the village and the Parish Registers record his baptism in 1890. In the cemetery, the Anstee family gravestone is still legible: “Lieut J Anstee Killed in action in France July 1st 1916 Aged 26”. But what about his childhood, his character, his military career? By all accounts he was quite a personality in the neighbourhood. As a boy, he must have been one of the rector’s favourites – “Joe” was praised in the parish newsletter for his help with decorating the church for Easter, Harvest and Christmas. There are numerous press reports of his musical performances, playing the piano or singing along with his sisters at fund-raising events. St. Andrew’s Church Brass Plaque By 1911 Joe was 21 Roll of Honour
Joseph Anstee and working at the mill with his father and elder brother. He was a keen cricketer; he was the Honorary Secretary to the village Reading Room and was a Freemason with the St Guthlac Lodge. There is little information about Joe’s wartime service: at 25 he started his military training at The Inns of Court Officer Training Corps, based in Berkamsted. After only four months he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment. Then nine months later, in continued >

July 1916, the Stamford Mercury reported the sad news that Lt Anstee was “missing, believed killed”, later confirming he’d been wounded, but waiting on a stretcher to be taken behind the lines, had been hit again and died instantly - on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Regimental diaries and military accounts of the battle explain the first day’s actions and it becomes clear that a 2nd Lieutenant, leading his platoon, would have had very little chance of survival.
George V scroll
Not expecting to find any more information except the Commonwealth War memorial, it came as a surprise to find a newspaper article published in 2003! Hidden behind an old picture from an antiques shop in Peterborough, were a condolence message signed by King George V and a scroll commemorating 2nd Lt Joseph Anstee. The documents had been donated to the Museum as no relatives could be traced. The scroll would have been sent to Joseph’s parents in 1920 but Joseph’s father, William, died in 1919, so it was probably his mother Mary who tucked the certificate behind the picture to keep it safe. On discovering this story, West Deeping Heritage Group obtained a copy of the scroll and the accompanying letter, with permission from the Museum to reproduce it.
So now there are more photographs to add to the village archives and the family have been given a copy of the scroll. Generously, they have decided the original should remain in Peterborough Museum. What better words with which to finish this tribute to Joseph Anstee than those in George V’s message? “Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.” There are more stories to come: a book is in preparation for publication in 2018 - West Deeping Remembers the First World War.
Words and research: Maggie Ashcroft; Photographs: WDHG archives, Peterborough Museum & Jill Hole.
It wasn’t until this year that any relatives were found. On Friday 30
1st July 2016 West Deeping commemorated the first day of the Battle of the Somme and especially remembered Joe Anstee. The ceremony was mentioned in the local newspaper – where the name of Anstee caught the eye of Jill Hole, a reader from Glaston, near Oakham. She was brought up in Market Deeping, the daughter of Madge and Jim Measures (who used to run the fruit and vegetable shop in Church Street, in the building which is now Chester’s Restaurant.) Her paternal grandmother, Granny Bet, had married into the Measures family in 1902 – her maiden name was Elizabeth Anstee and she was Joseph’s elder sister!

SANDERSON
Market Deeping: First stop for shoes & stationery In 1814 when John Clare was 21 he came to Market Deeping and bought a blank foolscap book from J B Henson, a Bookseller; for this he paid eight shillings, the equivalent of a week’s wages. Into it he copied those poems to date that he thought worthy of preservation including ‘Helpston Green’. Seventy years later, Sarah Abreda Cade from Northborough opened her own stationery business in the town having become the second wife of Joseph Sanderson whose first wife, Elizabeth had recently died. It was a small shop on the side of the Sanderson’s own upmarket store where he sold bespoke boots and shoes for the gentry of the town as well as a ready made line for the workers. It can be assumed that while having their fittings for footwear the local gentry would also purchase their stationery which would then be neatly wrapped by Sarah and taken away to enjoy in the same way that John Clare had done nearly a century earlier. Joseph had been born in the High Street, Market Deeping to Edward and Sarah (nee Pycroft) in 1844. He became an apprentice cordwainer (shoemaker) and through working hard he was able to set up business at a young age and demonstrated the sort of business acumen that would
make him a successful businessman in the town. He would have had a workshop in his home and the family would be expected to help to make the boots and shoes. Careful records of shoe sizes and measurements had to be kept so it was the job for a highly literate man. Joseph married his first wife, Elizabeth Garford, in 1867 and they had four children, Thomas, Kate and twins, Sarah and Elizabeth, who sadly both died as infants. He opened his shop on the corner of Market Place and Church Street in Market Deeping and it is listed in Kelly’s Directory in 1876 as being in Church Street. The shop, it can be assumed, was always busy, the gentry of the town coming for fittings and they would have had a different pair of boots or shoes for each occasion. Sanderson’s speciality was the making of ladies’ patent leather riding boots which would be stitched by hand, working 18 stitches in red silk to the inch. Having deservedly won a good reputation, his business expanded and he employed a number of craftsmen. Large quantities of his handmade boots were sent all over the world. For the working man there were ready made boots and continued >

SANDERSON
Although bought up as an Anglican, Sanderson had become a Nonconformist and was largely responsible for the building of the Bridge Street Primitive Methodist Chapel and school room in Deeping St James. As Treasurer, Joseph had raised the not inconsiderable sum of £500 for this purpose. The Chapel opened in 1896 and is now the Masonic Hall. For many years he was a Sunday School teacher, later becoming a superintendent of the school. He was a local Preacher for over 50 years.
shoes and these would often be lined with newspaper to make them more comfortable and to fit! Sarah and Joseph had four children together; Joseph, Frances, Hattie and Nellie. Sarah died in December 1934 at the age of 86. In her obituary in the Grantham Journal comment was made of the help that she had been to her husband both in his business and in public life. She had done good work on various committees during the First World War and when the Water Board was in its infancy, she worked to support her husband, one of its first members, with Dr Benson and Mr G. Linnell. Joseph became Chairman of the Committee and was one of the guarantors of the Water Bore Scheme. She predeceased her husband who was celebrated in the Peterborough Advertiser in 1941 as being ‘Market Deeping’s Grand Old Man’ having reached the age of 97. ‘A truly remarkable man who still shows a great interest in local and public affairs. In spite of his years he retains all his faculties with the exception of his hearing which is slightly impaired. He has a great sense of humour and is fond of a joke at any time. An early riser he can be seen enjoying his pipe of tobacco before many people are about. Mr Sanderson has a vast store of memories. One of the old craftsmen of his trade, only last week a gentleman called to see him wearing a pair of boots he made for him 30 years ago.’ 34
He was a tolerant man and became a School Manager of the Church Schools, showing a lively interest in education as well and in his later life he attended the Parish Church as a Communicant and would read lessons on special occasions. ‘Father’ of the Parish Council he was regular in his attendance at meetings. He was also a Freemason. In his ‘spare’ time he loved reading, liking nothing better than to dip into one of his travel books. Sadly Joseph Sanderson did not achieve his century but died on 22nd March 1944 at the age of 99, leaving an estate of £4,588. 9s 7d.

RECIPE
White chocolate covered Christmas Bombes Rob Johnson of the Waterton Arms makes Christmas special with these white chocolate Bombes Impress your guests this Christmas with these petits fours which can be served after your main meal or even as pudding with a difference at Christmas! Wondering what to give for gifts? Then conjure up a little magic in the kitchen! Simple to make, these bombes are a great way to use up leftover Christmas pud or you can buy one especially for the purpose – it won’t break the bank and a little goes a long way! Break up your pudding into large tablespoon-sized pieces and roll into balls. These can then be placed on a kebab skewer which in turn can be pierced through the skin of an empty box. This way the ball remains intact and the chocolate spreads evenly. When placed back in the box the skewer and the ball remain upright. Melt some high quality Belgian white chocolate (milky bar does not have enough cocoa content and so won’t suffice) over a bain marie (a bowl with the chocolate broken into 36
pieces over a saucepan of hot but not boiling water). Then roll the pudding ball until it is well covered. Put the skewer back in the box until it is hard and then dip again. This should then be chilled in the fridge for approximately four hours. The balls are then ready to be decorated with milk chocolate which has again been melted in a bain marie and placed in a piping bag from which a zig-zag pattern can be piped. This should be left to harden. It can then be stored in an airtight container until ready for use. Make now and it will last until well after the holiday. Decorate with tiny pieces of raspberry and thyme to look like miniature baubles or Christmas puddings and then your white chocolate Christmas bombes are ready to serve as petit fours, a welcome handmade present or as Christmas pudding itself!

Five Great Places to see Seals Words & Pictures by William Bowell There are two species of Seal that regularly occur on the coast of the British Isles- the cute Common Seal and the more robust (Atlantic) Grey Seal.
Donna Nook, Lincolnshire Grey Seals are distinctive from Common Seals by their larger size and more pointy face with parallel nostrils. Donna Nook (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve) is probably the most popular place in the country to see Grey Seals, attracting thousands of visitors every winter. The Seals give birth to their cute pups near the sand dunes and can be present right up to the fenced off areas. This year the first pup was born on the 24th October. More information can be found at http:// www.lincstrust.org.uk/donna-nook
Blakeney Point, Norfolk There are two ways to tackle Blakeney Point; walk from Cley Coastguards or I recommend a trip from Morston Quay on Bean’s Seal Boat Trips. The beauty of the boat trips is that you will see the Seals in their natural habitat- in the water. They are incredibly inquisitive animals which will follow the boat just to see what is going on. Both Common & Grey Seals breed on site in the summer and winter respectively but both will be encountered on a visit in any season. For more information visit http://www.beansboattrips.co.uk/ 40
November is a great time of year to see Grey Seals in particular, which from mid-October to the end of January come ashore to breed. They are Britain’s largest carnivore and watching the Bulls (males) clamber totally ungracefully across the beach to see off a rival is rather impressive. Common Seals breed from June to August but they are still easy enough to find in November at the right locations.
The Wash, Norfolk/Lincolnshire The Wash is an internationally important estuary where the Welland, Witham, Nene and Great Ouse enter the North Sea. It’s vast sand flats that appear during low tides are excellent for seeing hundreds of basking Common Seals. As ever boat trips are the best way to view these animals and regular trips from Boston on the Boston Belle organised by the RSPB and Seal trips from Hunstanton are highly recommended. From the land Sir Peter Scott’s Lighthouse at the end of the Nene and the end of the Welland/Witham at Frampton Marsh RSPB are good though binoculars/scopes are essential.
The River Welland, Deeping Highbank Not exactly the best or most guaranteed place to see Seals I grant you, but there is always a chance of encountering a Common Seal on our local river. Of course, famously, they are all called Sammy, which can lead to confusion as to whether it’s just one lonely individual involved but there has in fact been at least three in the past two years alone. When they occur, they are usually found by driving the long ! stretch of road that follows the Welland from Deeping Lakes to beyond Crowland OW N K in the Bridge. The last sighting was in early September when a dog Otter was also OO area. With the closest colony only on the banks of the Welland mouth,Bit is hardly Circuit classes/arts and crafts, film days and more... surprising individuals get lost from time to time. !

Horsey, Norfolk Although further away from Deeping than Donna Nook, I prefer this site for seeing Grey Seals in November as it tends to be quieter from a visitor point of view. Again the pups can come right up to the fenced off areas where the public can view and photographic opportunities are a plenty no matter how big your lens!
