Welcome
This year the Deeping Summer Season started early with the Literary Festival, which will return in 2019! it continued with the Carnival, the Beer Fest, the Horse and Pony Show, the Dog Show, the Raft Race and will culminate on Sunday 3rd September with the Duck Race. Already auditions are being held for the Priory Players Panto, the Gang Show will soon start rehearsals and the Handful of Harmonies are recruiting. The truth is there is never a quiet moment in the Deepings and there is a reason for that.... our community attracts talented, motivated and community minded individuals and when you read our history you will see that it has done so through the ages Long may it continue!
Deeping Dog show winner was 8 month old Loke (left) and reserve was Murphy presented with their rosettes by Bert Murray (ex-Chelsea player) and judge Pippa Clare. 3

Marrying
Mum and Dad
12
FEATURE
When Donna Bird packed her bag with a bottle of champagne and glasses and headed off to her favourite beach in Mundesley, Norfolk, on 29th February last year, little did she know that not only would the proposal that she had meticulously planned be somewhat sensational but so too would be the ensuing wedding! Donna had secretly prepared a photobook of all the happy times that she had shared with her partner Philip Mills whilst they had been together. The book was filled with lots of comments, memories and beautiful pictures that Donna had captured of them together. The last photograph of the book was an image of Donna holding up a placard saying ‘Will you Marry Me?’ Philip, from the local family plumbing firm A.D. Mills was completely shocked and blown away by the romantic gesture and obviously replied with … yes! Little did they both know that the adventure was only just about to begin! When Philip and Donna returned home from Norfolk they gathered the children around the kitchen table to tell them the good news that they were going to get married. Unsure how the children would take it they were both a little bit nervous. Donna announced to the children that she had proposed to Philip and the children started jumping up and down all excited and they all shouted, “Can we go on Marrying Mum and Dad?” Marrying Mum and Dad is one of the children’s favourite TV shows. It’s a programme in which the children plan their parents’ wedding with the help of celebrity TV presenter Naomi Wilkinson. When the children asked if they could apply for the show both Donna and Philip agreed, as they both decided when they were away in Norfolk that they did not want their wedding to be like anybody else’s they had attended; they wanted something completely different. Phoebie, aged 11, printed off the forms and with the help of Amy (13), Millie (10) and Charlie (8) they all completed the extensive application form answering questions like: What did the family enjoy doing together? What were their hobbies? Did they have any pets? … the list was endless. But safe to say when Donna pulled up at the post box in Frognall and posted off the forms she had a feeling that the family would be chosen to take part in this amazing experience. By the end of October last year nothing had been heard from the BBC so Donna and Philip decided to start making plans of their own. A few days later the phone rang. It was Kate from the BBC who turned out to be a former student at The Deepings School and still had family living in the area, while she herself had moved to Manchester. The Mills/Bird family then had to jump through many hoops to complete the process to be continued >
13
FEATURE one of the 15 families chosen to be on the TV programme. TV crews were deployed to see how the family shaped up on camera, there were interviews around Christmas time and then after many warnings that the family might not qualify in spite of all the tests, the phone call came. Marrying Mum and Dad was coming to Deeping! Shortly after the Marrying Mum & Dad bus arrived in Deeping St James and the kids, with their chaperone Bev, started to put their ideas together. Cinderella was ruled out because of its Disney copyright and Phoebie also ruled out Shrek, not wanting to turn her mother green on her wedding day. A rags-to-riches theme started to emerge and was kept well and truly under wraps as the children plotted and planned, tying down the last exquisite detail that it was going to be …. An Enchanted Forest Wedding. The children had enlisted their crazy Uncle, Sean Reidy a caricaturist who was able to interpret the ideas of the intrepid four on paper and relay them to the BBC – he was later to produce a caricature of the presenters of the show to give as a lasting record of the day to the team from the Mills/Bird family. Chaperone Bev commented that they were ‘a lovely family to work with and the children were the first children she had worked with that had been involved in absolutely everything even down to the finest details, they were definitely children that knew what they wanted!’ Filming commenced at the beginning of May 2017. The children were taken to Langtoft Riding School where they prepared for their unicorn ride in the Enchanted Forest. Material for the costumes designed by the children was bought in a shop in Werrington. Three possible addresses for the venue were given to the bride and groom and the night before the wedding they stayed in a hotel in Northampton. 14
As the day dawned the couple were blindfolded and they were both dressed in the ‘broccoli and carrot throw-up’ fabric with brown leggings and twigs in their hair as they were transported to the wedding venue, Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens. Here the blindfolds were taken off and the pair were confronted with their friends and family all dressed up as creatures of an Enchanted Forest! There were leprechaun men, fairies, elves; the list was endless, and everyone entered into the spirit of the day in spite of only having one week’s notice of the theme. The sight was such a spectacle that the enchanted couple themselves were barely able to tear themselves away to look in the mirror provided specially for the occasion. Then came the challenge! The couple had to put their hands into tree trunks filled with locusts and cockroaches in order to extract two identical boxes which held their wedding rings whilst wearing real snakes around their necks. With their prizes safely in hand they were led off to change into their wedding clothes, also designed by the children. Philip’s suit of green cloth was matched by that worn by Charlie and the delicate fairy dress worn by Donna echoed the colours in the matching dresses worn by the three sisters. The entourage arrived at the wedding which took place in the Orangery at Kelmarsh Hall on unicorns, actually, to the amusement of Philip, ‘Shirecorns’ as shire horses had been chosen as the breed of choice to be dressed as unicorns for the special day! The pièce de résistance was the six-layer enchanted forest wedding cake which depicted all aspects of the forest in minute detail and was a triumph both in its design by the children and in its exquisite construction! Amy Mills lays claim to orchestrating lots of the ideas that had been put into the melting pot for this never-to-be-forgotten project. Phoebie championed the unicorns and Millie the secret garden, while Charlie’s own special brand of humour bought another dimension to the day – one which, for this little family in Deeping St James, will remain forever etched in their memories.

BOOK LAUNCH FEATURE
Nick Tearle & Becky Owen-Fisher ‘Standing High out of Shrunken Peat’ West Deeping Artist, Nick Tearle and local poet and playwright Becky Owen-Fisher have joined forces to launch the new and exciting book Standing High out of Shrunken Peat, a unique collaboration featuring oil paintings and poetry inspired by the fenland landscape in which they both live and work. The inspiration for Nick’s work is the agricultural landscape of the Fens. He is particularly drawn to the small holdings and farms which stand isolated on the horizons of their flat surroundings. This year he won the Andrew Howarth award for his piece ‘Crowland Abbey from Cloot Drove.’ Nick paints his original works either literally ‘in the field’ or from his own
photographic source material in his home studio. His technique relies on the mastery of his medium, (oil paint) painting wet in wet, dark to light and fat over lean. When Nick met Becky their work proved to be an irresistible combination. Becky, who studied Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths College returned to her home town, Peterborough where she works as a writer for stage and radio and as a performer. Like Nick her work is also inspired by the fen landscape of her home. Nick and Becky chose John Clare Cottage in Helpston as the perfect location for the book launch. The talented actor Peter Crarer of Mask Theatre recited poems from John Clare and from the new book which captivated the audience in what proved to be a magical event where live songs from the a cappella folk group, The Lincolnshire Poachers rang out across the beauty of a summer afternoon with ‘ice cream clouds’ scudding overhead. Books are available at £12.99 (£14.99 incl. p&p) from www.nicktearle.net/product-category/ books John Clare Cottage and many other local retailers.

Staying alive… the role of LIVES in the community Many of us have been, or know someone who has been, helped by LIVES (Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Services) after calling 999 for an ambulance. But few of us know who these people are or what their role actually entails. Throughout Lincolnshire, most areas are covered at varying times of the day/night by one of the 170 LIVES groups. But only in The Deepings is cover provided every night of the year from 7pm to 7am (the Deepings Fire Brigade provides emergency medical cover during the day). When the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) receives a 999 call, the controller will dispatch the most appropriate EMAS resource (perhaps a single paramedic in a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) or a double crew in an Emergency Ambulance or a multi-service response with Fire Service and Police). They also notify, by text (backed up by a phone call), the nearest First Responder group. The On-Duty Responders then immediately drive to the event to provide emergency treatment to stabilise the patient and commence CPR and other life-saving treatment in advance of the arrival of EMAS. They will record observations to heart, breathing and vital signs required when the paramedics arrive as well as treating any bleeding or medical emergencies.
LIVES
paid and there is no cost charged to the Council Tax payers. Responders use their own vehicles and LIVES need to fund-raise to provide the required equipment (bandages, oxygen, defibrillators, medical observations equipment and even uniforms), so any donations, big or small, personal or company/ organisation based, are always very welcome. The group currently has nine active Responders who operate, normally in pairs, on a rota basis, which is tailored to accommodate individual availability and day/date preferences. Volunteers bring a wealth of experience with them as in the case of policemen, exservicemen or health care workers, but full training is given. More important is an unflappable nature, the ability to cope with other people’s injuries, and a desire to help others in need. New volunteers would be most welcome.
First Responders treat all calls with the same priority and aim to arrive anywhere within the Deepings within five minutes (and also go to Langtoft, Tallington, Baston, Deeping St Nicholas and even Crowland) often arriving whilst the caller is still on the phone. In the year ended 30 June the Deepings group responded to 424 calls, ranging from RTCs, cardiac arrests, strokes, falls, diabetic comas, sports injuries, factory incidents, drug overdoses, etc.
New starters receive an intensive three days’ training at LIVES HQ to reach Level 1 and then Level 2, before they partner experienced Responders on-call. This is then followed, after a period of experience, by further training to reach Level 3 (which all the current Deepings Responders hold). There are regular monthly meetings which provide refresher training, support and networking. Annual and 3-yearly requalification is also required. All training costs are covered. Counselling support is readily available, locally and from HQ.
The Deepings Group was set up in 2001 when Rotarian Gary Bentley, who had been impressed with a similar group in Spalding, initiated the local group. Helen Bembridge took on the Admin/Coordination of this group, and is still doing so today. And they are all totally voluntary. Nobody, locally, is
In Deeping two Responders, Ben Green and Harry Byton have gone on to become paramedics. In 2012 two of the group’s longest serving, and still active, members, Peter Ward and Dave Brook, were awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for long term, Front Line Emergency Service.
Peter comments that the biggest obstruction to the delivery of timely assistance is the lack of clear house numbers. He also advises that when an ambulance is called, it is a good idea to put all the lights at the front of the house on for easy identification, to lock dogs and cats away and, if possible, post somebody outside the house to direct the arriving support. Secondly, ambulances are too often called unnecessarily, resulting in the EMAS resource being out of action for three or four hours when it may be required for a real emergency elsewhere. Substance or alcohol abuse can also be problematic as there is a reluctance for patients to reveal the source of the problem. Responders have, for several years, provided CPR training for several groups and are, with LIVES HQ and the BBC, involved in a county wide Restart a Heart initiative to get as many people as possible trained in CPR this year. An event is being planned for this autumn in conjunction with the Deepings School. Our local First Responders also often provide Event First Aid cover at local community based activities such as the Deepings Beer Festival and Rotary Club Charity Runs. Acupuncture Acupuncture is becoming an increasingly popular and effective way of restoring and maintaining good health. The emphasis is on restoring balance in the body through acupuncture, diet and lifestyle changes. It is safe and works alongside conventional medical treatment. Alongside the needles it is also possible to use electro acupuncture (where tiny electrodes attach to the needles) and cupping therapy (as seen on the Olympic swimmers). Marianne Killick practises the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to acupuncture. Looking at all aspects of your physical and emotional well-being, Marianne treats a variety of issues, such as women’s health, pain and digestive problems, headaches and many more. Mindfulness Living mindfully means being more present and less judgemental in each moment. The Breathworks Mindfulness for Health course is an 8 week guided programme that starts by increasing awareness of what is happening in the body & mind which then aids compassionate acceptance of the unpleasant whilst embracing the pleasant. It helps people learn to be more mindful by using short meditations, gentle exercises and other habit breaking strategies. As we become more connected with our minds and bodies we start to reconnect with the sensations of the world we live in it helps us let go of stress and tension. We start to notice the things we have started to take for granted, to be in ‘the moment’ not the past or worry about the future. Barbara Meeds http://www.feathershc.co.uk/ Call 07725513738
Osteopaths work to improve your health and aim to get to the root cause of a patient’s condition, this is achieved by taking a full case history, performing an evaluation and assessment, diagnosis and providing appropriate treatment for that problem. It’s not a one size fits all approach and every treatment is specific to the individual. Osteopaths are trained to identify and spot “red flags” and when to refer on to other medical professionals. Like GPs all Osteopaths are regulated, in this case by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). The minimum qualification for an Osteopath is completion of a four / five-year degree, which includes a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice. Indian Head massage The traditional art of Indian head massage is based on the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda, which has been practised in India for thousands of years. The word Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit and means the ‘science of life and longevity’. The Ayurvedic approach to health is the balance of body, mind and spirit and promotion of long life. Massage is recommended together with diet, herbs, cleansing, yoga, meditation and exercise. Treatment offered is adapted to Western lifestyle and covers the upper back, arms, neck, head and face. Many people find It is particularly effective for helping the relief of: • Tension headaches and aches and pains • Emotional stress (feelings of anxiety and depression) • Mental fatigue • Muscular tension, soreness and fatigue Sara Branch 01778 345223 or 07712353590
Taoism Taoism is an ancient philosophy that stems from the Orient to help people harmonise their bodies, minds and spirits for better health. Taoism gives a set of common sense guidelines that can help modern people just as much as they helped people in bygone days. The way that we feel in the Summer is different to how we feel in the Winter. If we are working from an office, we may need more physical activities to help our bodies find harmony. If we do manual work we may need meditation. Just as our human forms have many varieties - so do Taoist arts. Taoist Arts Training sessions explore many of them such as Tai Chi, Qigong, Tao Yin (Chinese Yoga), 9 star Ki, macrobiotics, healing and meditation amongst others. Ray Pawlett Call 07413 620344 21
HEALTH & HOLISTIC THERAPIES Hot Stone Massage Hot stone massage originated approx 2000yrs ago and has since been used to treat many conditions. Laval or basalt stones (used because of their heat retention capabilities) are used along with Swedish massage therapy, and the heat generated helps to warm the muscles to deepen the effects of the massage. The heat relieves muscular pain and tension on both a physical and psychological level. The therapy helps the client shed anxiety and stress, improves circulation due to the widening of the blood vessels so feeding the body with oxygenated blood and eliminate waste products, this in turn can help in long term pain therapy. The therapy can have a sedative effect which can promote sleep. It is a very relaxing therapy, and can be combines with other therapies such as aromatherapy. Jill Eve http://www.feathershc.co.uk/ Call 07725513738
Thai Yoga Massage In Thai Yoga Massage the practitioner uses thumbs, palms, forearms, feet to gently but firmly press and stretch the client. As the body is pressed and stretched the vital energy channels of the body are opened and the flow is maintained or unblocked. The process is very thorough and rhythmic, working on the body’s meridian lines to bring about balance and flow. The client is clothed and treated on a mattress on the floor in a lovely quiet room, unrushed and calm. The therapy can leave the client with much more flexibility, improved circulation, stress relief, relieved tension (physical and emotional) , relief from constipation and/or similar digestive disorders, muscular pain, emotional mindfulness, and an improved immune system if done regularly. It can be adapted to suit persons with different physical needs, due to its flexibility. Jill Eve http://www.feathershc.co.uk/ Call 07725513738
Aromatherapy Massage Holistic medicine, of which Aromatherapy is part, takes a comprehensive view and recognises that mind, body and spirit are all parts of one living being. In a therapeutic sense, Aromatherapy is the art of choosing, blending and applying essential oils to heal disharmony and imbalance. The effects of Aromatherapy rest on the communication between the plant, their extracts and the person receiving the treatment – both of which are complex and dynamic entities. Another important aspect is the therapeutic relationship between client and Practitioner, working together to develop a blend specifically tailored to your needs. The oils and massage are a catalyst for positive change and empowerment in your own healing journey. Emma Toms 07711 452440 22
Yoga You don’t have to be a 60’s flower child, or a person that can fold up into a shoe box to do yoga. Yoga is for everyone and different things to different people –one person may want to relax, another wants to stop chronic pain, another seeks physical perfection, another to beat depression. It depends on how you apply your practise to do what you want from it. Yoga has been practised since 2,500 BC, and is so beneficial that it is being prescribed by GP’s all around the world to treat all modern illnesses. There are hundreds of yoga styles, the most popular in the western world being Hatha Yoga. It is based on physical postures, breathing, mental focus, relaxation and meditation. There are also newer more bizarre styles of yoga popping up, such as laughter yoga, antigravity yoga and even tantrum yoga! Cheryl Baskeyfield 0758 770 9270
Reiki Reiki (Ray-Key) is an ancient Japanese natural healing system meaning Universal Energy, which has no religious alignment. Every insured Usui Reiki Practitioner and Master has a specific teaching lineage directly from Dr Usui to themselves. Reiki is available for everyone and things. For people, Reiki is a relaxing fully clothed treatment where you lay on a massage couch, with your head supported by a pillow and you are covered with a blanket. During the treatment you have your eyes closed as the therapist works head to toe with various hand positions either using hands on or hands off. A client may experience seeing different colours and feel heat or tingling. Receiving regular Reiki sessions is relaxing for the mind and body, which is why the treatment supports our holistic wellbeing; guiding us to be more present and see life with a calmer and clearer perspective. Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment though, so check with your GP or medical consultant if you are currently having or recovering from treatment. Emma Canham (MFHT) 07508 246266
Reflexology Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the hands and feet which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body.If you’re feeling out of sorts then reflexology can provide a wonderfully relaxing experience where you can take time out from everyday pressures. It can help to relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of wellbeing. Estelle Allen Tel 01778 345223 or 07921138084

GRACEFULLY UNCOVERED
Gracefully Uncovered The five friends who have got together as ‘Gracefully Uncovered’ are all beautiful women – they were beautiful before they developed breast cancer and the calendar they have produced is testimony to the fact that they remain beautiful now. The difference in them is that, during their terrifying journey, they have developed an inner strength and positivity which has allowed them not only to be beautiful but to be inspirational too. When Michelle Devonport first had the kernel of an idea to produce a calendar with women who had all undergone treatment for breast cancer, she wanted to make some money as a thank you for the way she had been treated by the team at the Breast Cancer Care Unit at Peterborough District Hospital – never once was she made to feel like a number, and with contact details to call for help day or night she had felt supported throughout the whole treatment process.
There were times when she felt really sick, and when her hair came out in clumps in her hand but throughout it all she had an overriding feeling that this would offer the chance for a new beginning. Life would not stop here and it hasn’t. Initially a mutual friend, Pauline Daniels, invited a group of friends who had all come through the treatment process for a cuppa at Michelle’s house. Ideas of locations and sponsors were discussed and Carrie Wilson, who had just started as a part-time photographer with some weddings under her belt, was suggested for the key role. When the girls got together for their first photo shoot, and the time came to get undressed, it was Steph Tarrier who first took the plunge. She was the one with the cheeky sense of humour who broke the ice and the others plunged in! The others, young Mum Kerry Ash, family girl Sharon Post and Caroline Clifton, who is no stranger continued >

to fundraising: since her diagnosis with ’Friends of Caroline’ she has raised almost £14,000 for the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Foundation Trust. Employing all their tenacity the girls raised sponsorship from P.J. Thory and Fisherprint while Marks &Spencer provided underwear for the girls to wear. A support team, headed up by Jackie Wayte, ensured that props were in the right place at the right time, glamour services were provided by the talented Georgia Burdock, Laura at the Style House at Baston and The Beauty Retreat. 6 County Campers provided the camper vans; the auditorium at Stamford Arts Centre was the location for the swimwear and burlesque shots; the Bowthorpe Oak was a sensational site for the September shot, and the Haycock Hotel at Wansford for the Christmas location.
which these women now embrace their lives, they are both meaningful and inspirational. Each image in the calendar provides an insight into the journey they have undertaken together. ‘We wanted to show other women sharing the same diagnosis as us that anything is possible. Far from being a full stop this is a new beginning,’ says Michelle.
The words ‘living life for the moment’ when they roll glibly off the tongue can appear to be a platitude but when you see the joie de vivre with

Preserve and remember family history by framing several items that tell a story together. When Sharon Post’s Grandmother left her a Death Penny she was prompted to find out more about her Great Grandfather John Smy. He had been Chief Cook in the Mercantile Marine and served on the ship Louvain which was torpedoed on the 20/1/1918. He was tragically killed aged only thirty. Sharon was given a Tower of London Poppy, found a newspaper clipping and photo and the frame was complete. She said, “the family thought we owed it to him to preserve these items for generations to come.” Out of a big old manila envelope and onto the wall. A pair of mink earrings and how the ad in Modern Woman magazine was put together.

THE TITHE BARN
The tithe barn in Deeping St James Sonia Marshall explores Tithe barns had an essential role in the medieval economy and were usually associated with a parish church or monastic foundation. They were a place of storage at harvest time for grain and other crops both from glebe land and monastic estates and also for the tithe or ten per cent of produce from other landholdings due to be paid for the maintenance of the clergy.
Baldwin Fitzgilbert founded Deeping Priory in 1139 as a cell of Thorney Abbey. At some stage between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries a tithe barn was built to the south east of the Priory’s churchyard. It was a sizeable structure built of rubble stone measuring some 90 feet long by 20 feet wide with a porch. Following the Dissolution of the Priory in 1539 the building continued in use as a barn. The sheer size of tithe barns made them suitable in later centuries for storing farm machinery. The barn originally had a thatched roof; this was destroyed by fire in the early 1900’s and replaced with a Collyweston slate roof. By the 1960’s the front wall of the barn had bowed outwards by nearly a foot. It was deemed to be unsafe and was demolished by South Kesteven District Council. This was a great loss not only to the village but to the country’s heritage at large and would be unthinkable today. The barn’s tiles by that time had become a valuable asset and were sold off after the barn was taken down. It had been hoped that some of the original stone and tiles might have been retained for use on whatever building was erected on the site. Two ideas were mooted for reuse of the site: a centre for the village as a whole or bungalows for the elderly, the latter scheme winning the day. 35

CYCLING
Si Fox reflects
I like scones, clotted cream and jam as much as the next person, so when the opportunity arose to go to Ilfracombe in North Devon to sample some ‘in-situ’, I jumped at the chance. The only problem was the mode of transport. I’d agreed to cycle there with a group of eager cyclists from the Spin Room Studios on Spalding Road. Now, I haven’t been cycling long; about a year, and when I agreed to do this I was struggling with 27 miles, let alone the ‘300 miles in 3 days’ that was being bandied about. However, with weekly Sunday rides out and various Sportifs, I was as prepared as I could be. Or to put it another way, it had arrived. There was no going back! Having dropped off my bag the night before and had a good night’s kip, I cycled to the Spin Room for 7am. We were due to leave at 7.30 sharp. Was this an early or a leisurely start? Had I been at work, it would have been a lovely lie-in, but I couldn’t help but focus on the fact that I had to bike to StratfordUpon-Avon before I could have an evening meal and go to bed again… A quick black coffee, a fill in of the registration pack which required ‘Next of Kin’ (just to boost your confidence!), a photo shoot, and we were away, snaking through Deeping’s early morning light. The first ‘difficult’ bit of the journey for me was the ride through Rutland. I’m not a huge fan of hills, but in retrospect, Rutland was positively flat compared to the Cotswolds on Day 2! I walked up some beautiful hills on that day (‘Great baker were my dad’!) Days 1, 2 and 3 seemed to follow the same format, which considering the geography was immovable, was quite bizarre. The first 25 miles were nice and steady, the middle 50 were ‘lumpy’, ‘undulating’, ‘variable’ depending who you spoke to, and the last 25 to the hotels were a dream. Let me tell you that 50 miles of Cotswolds, whilst undoubtedly pretty, were ‘challenging’ at best. Day 2 was also the day that we got to ride over the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which was a high point for me (literally!).
We hit Bristol at around 6pm, and still had to get to Weston-super-Mare, around 25 miles away. Our group, the last ones in, got to the hotel around 8.40pm, certainly a good two hours after the others. It wasn’t a race. though, and we all seemed happy enough (although this was probably ‘relief ’ in retrospect), despite the fact that as soon as we saw the sign that read ‘Welcome to Weston-super-Mare’, the heavens opened. Not a light, refreshing summer rain, but driving, head-on rain; rain that had got bored being ‘up’ and now most definitely wanted to be ‘down’. The last day’s ride to Ilfracombe was beautiful. It had been touted as ‘the shortest, easiest day’, and had I been Chris Hoy, it would have been. I have to say, though, that after a long, winding climb, getting to the top and realising you could see the sea over the bay was pretty special. We were still 40 miles away with ‘lumpy’ bits though. One of those bits was directly after lunch: a sneaky hill which went on forever. I say ‘hill’. It turned out it was something like the 234th highest mountain in Britain. Pretty, though. Steep, barely walkable, but pretty. The rain started as we hit Exmoor, and didn’t stop, increasing in ferocity. The temperature dropped, but our spirits didn’t. We rode on. The last couple of miles were completely downhill, right to the hotel foyer. We didn’t so much ride in, in a blaze of glory, but surfed in; wet, cold, tired, but jubilant! 300 miles in 3 days, climbing 16000ft. We’d done it! I’d challenged and surprised myself, and made some good friends in the process. I ought to add that such was my level of ‘stunned’, that it was only when I got home that I realised that not one scone had passed my lips! Many thanks to the organisers ‘Active4ever Ltd’, ‘The Crew’ and the other riders for making it such a memorable trip

0-65 in a couple of months! That’s how the first WI in Langtoft grew. and what an eighteen months it has been. The group aim to please all age groups and claim three generations of one family as members. Whether long standing villagers or newcomers, friendships have been formed and parties and events planned. When I spoke to Jean Street, President of Visit to Hambleton Bakery the branch, she was fresh from a garden party held for members and their families at the weekend. There was a party for the Queens’s 90th with a fabulous birthday cake, a colourful roster of speakers including Squadron Leader Bev Cartwright who spoke about Catering in Unusual Places and Sue Eales who spoke about globes and the work behind producing them. There have been many diverse outings which include a visit to The Houses of Parliament, the Mosque and Buddhist centre in Peterborough, lunch at HM Prison Peterborough, a visit to Hambleton Bakery, and a Pork Pie making evening. Langtoft WI have supported the National Campaign for dementia care in making dementia mitts and carers toiletry packs and also in knitting tiny vests for babies in the Sudan.
