That didn’t stop the intrepid Deeping St James allotment holders from holding a well-attended and highly enjoyable coffee and cake morning one Sunday in April. Plans were made, projects discussed and a good time was had by all. Celebrating the fact that it was possible to meet together when just four short years ago this would not have been possible! In the words of Donna Ashworth, ‘Joy sneaks in, as you pour a cup of coffee, watching the sun hit your favourite tree; just right!’

Following our feature on The Pack Horse we received this note ‘Just want to say what an interesting article it was and highlighted my Mum and Aunt’s connection with the Pack Horse and Northborough itself, they were bought up at 3 Church Street as my grandfather, Arthur Field worked at the Manor as a farm labourer for the Garford family who were tenant farmers for Earl Fitzwilliam of Milton Hall. It was my parents (Pauline Field and Harry Balderson) that lived in the Grove and my Aunt was in Northborough. The Jeffries and the Manor House

Bart Wilkinson! An upright man with a twinkle in his eye and a smile for everyone! For years he looked after the cemetery at the Priory Church beautifully – white checked shirt – sleeves rolled up – braces – cap –I remember him well! Bart was linked through his wife to a long line of well-respected personalities in Deeping St James. A Church Street resident, he passed away in 2010, having been predeceased by his wife Irene (Rene) in 1995. She had served in the Women’s Land Army in Melton Mowbray during WW2, returning to Deeping St James where she married Bart in 1951, initially setting up home with him at 175 Eastgate.

The Jeffrey family, of which Irene was a member, worked at the Manor House in Deeping St James when it was owned by the 5th Marquis of Exeter (William Thomas Brownlow Cecil). He had bought Waterton Hall in 1891 and changed its name. Seven years later when his father died, he moved to Burghley and his mother, the Dowager of Exeter, Lady Isabella Whichcote, made the house her home.

The Jeffrey family originated in Higham in Norfolk, where Frederick was born in 1824, the son of Samuel and Frances (née Norton). Frederick left his home village for Frampton in Lincolnshire where he became an apprentice woodcarver, marrying Elizabeth Cooling (1828-1912) in 1850 in St Margaret’s Church, Leicester. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Cooling (née Redell) from the city. Frederick set up his own business as a Gothic and General Woodcarver, building up considerable experience in church, cabinet and other work. He was a successful craftsman and in 1891 he bought several acres of land in Frampton.

The couple had nine children, the eldest, Frederick, born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, in 1851, baptised in St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Frampton in 1854. Eventually, as a millwright, he emigrated to America. Arthur, born in 1860, married Rebecca Drew in Boston and took on the responsibility of looking after his father’s land in Frampton. When his father died in 1898 he moved with his family of three, Jessica, Frederick and Mary, to Sheffield where he set up a grocery and fruit business. Frederick Senior’s daughter Elizabeth was born in Frampton in 1865 and became a draper’s assistant in Skirbeck, close to Boston, eventually becoming a lady’s maid for Thomas and Ann Bland at The Hall, South Rauceby. William was born in Frampton in 1872 and he too became a draper’s assistant, marrying Florence Hill Southwell in Boston. Eventually he became a commercial traveller, living in Catford, London when his daughter Kathleen was born in 1902. In 1904 he was inducted into St Martin’s Lodge of the Freemasons (number 2455), moving to Camberwell and working for Messrs Spencer & Turner Co Ltd Wholesale Textiles. Kathleen became a shorthand typist; in 1929 he inherited 100 stocks in the Canadian Pacific Railway Co from his older brother Thomas and retired to Leigh on Sea near Southend where he died in 1946 aged 64.

Thomas Samuel, born in 1854 in Frampton, was the close link that the family developed with Deeping St James. Initially lodging with his brother Frederick in Skirbeck, Thomas was a fitter, later to become an engineer, travelling around the country in pursuit of work. On his travels he came upon the village of Deeping St James and he always returned here for his holidays. So it was of no surprise that on his retirement he purchased Glenbrook Cottage at 37 Eastgate for £360. The house was described as a ‘beautiful double fronted house, built to a typical Victorian design, spacious and solid being a brick and slated residence with two reception rooms, kitchen and pantry. It had four bedrooms and a bathroom, outbuildings with a yard and garden.’ Thomas died in 1929 at the cottage leaving £610.

His sister Adeline was baptised in 1856 at Frampton Parish Church and was a dressmaker on leaving school. She gave up this career choice to become a nurse for William Brownlow Cecil, and later as a lady’s maid for the household of Sir Thomas Whichcote at Walcot. When the 1891 Census was taken Isabella was staying at Walcot and so it is of no surprise that Adeline became a housekeeper at Burghley House and later for Lady Isabella at the Manor in Deeping St James, earning £60 a year.

Adeline worked directly under the mistress of the house with authority over all the female servants except the lady’s maid and nurse who reported directly to Lady Isabella. She oversaw the daily running of the household, managing all aspects of domestic life, meticulously recording daily expenses in a ledger, ensuring that bills were paid and receipts filed. She monitored the performance of the domestic help, ensuring that they adhered

to standards of cleanliness and punctuality and order was maintained. The housekeeper was considered second in command in the house, embodying qualities of honesty, vigilance and industry. Not only responsible for the physical aspects of running the household, she was also responsible for maintaining its integrity and efficiency.

At the ripe old age of 84, Elizabeth, Adeline’s mother, visited her at the Manor in Deeping St James. When Lady Isabella died in 1917 she left Adeline £50 in her will and Adeline retired at the age of 61, going to live with her brother Thomas in Eastgate.

Her sister, Annie, was baptised in Frampton in 1862 and like Adeline started her working life as a dressmaker, following her sister to Burghley as a ladies maid and then moving to the Manor House in Deeping St James in 1911. Her duties included helping her mistress dress and undress, lacing up corsets and fastening buttons and arranging undergarments. She would be tasked with making her mistress look good at all times and so would undertake hairdressing and grooming duties. Looking after the wardrobe also fell to her and so she would sew, mend and alter garments as needed, attending to stain removal. She would serve her mistress breakfast in bed and draw her bath – the first person she saw in the morning and the last person she saw at night.

After the death of Isabella she received an annuity of £25 per year and with her sister moved to Thomas’s house in Eastgate. When Thomas died she received £500, household effects and the proceeds of his insurances.

Adeline and Annie were remembered in the village as wellcorseted stout ladies always dressed in black and never seen without hats and gloves. They wore their skirts so long that their feet were never seen. They had a tiny Pekinese dog which trotted alongside them on a lead when they were walking in the village.

To local children they looked slightly unbending and a little forbidding. But they took part in all village activities, Annie often winning prizes in the Rose and Sweet Pea Show for cut flowers and flower arranging.

When Adeline died in June 1934 aged 77, the Marquis of Exeter, Lady Winifred Cecil and staff from Burghley House attended her funeral, the Marquis saying he had lost a lifelong friend who had been his nurse when he was five, and subsequently housekeeper to the Dowager of Exeter. Her brother William, sister Annie and younger brother Frank and his wife Elizabeth were also at her funeral.

Annie left Deeping, moving to Leicester to be near to her family where she died in April 1952 aged 90. She left £253 in her will, her fur coat to Florence Jeffries and the rest of her estate to Frank Lake Jeffries, paying tribute to his unselfish character.

After leaving school, the couple’s son, Frank Lake Jeffries, trained as a furrier in Stamford, staring his own business in Leicester. Their daughter Nora went to live and work in Stamford as a hairdresser before marrying Geoffrey Goodwin, a diesel engineer from Herefordshire in 1927. The couple had a daughter Elizabeth (Betty) in 1927 and settled at 34 Central Fosse Road in Leicester. At one point in 1935, father Frank, now an unemployed boiler engineer, son Frank Lake a furrier and sister Irene, a hairdresser, all lived with the couple in Fosse Road. Geoffrey served in the Navy during WW2 and died in Peterborough in 1981 aged 76, Nora died in Essex in 1995.

Frank Lake never forgot his Deeping roots, sending a sample of his work as a furrier to the Deeping St James Church Bazaar every year and in spite of his death at 34 Central Fosse Road his funeral service in 1972 was at the Priory and his burial, with a picture of his mother, in Deeping St James. He left £3,900 which was shared between his two sisters.

Irene and Bart Wilkinson had four daughters: Maria (now Anderson), Pat (now Hanson), Jane (now Prentice) and Susan (now Cordes). There are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. As a reminder of their forebears’ close association with the Burghley Estate, a rose tree has been planted there by Irene’s daughters.

The sun is shining and I can see Mum getting a few bits together. I hear my name being called and off we go to the car. This is exciting – another adventure with Mum.

When we arrive, as I get out of the car and on my lead, I can feel the fresh breeze blowing my ears and through my coat. Yipeee! Where are we, Mum?

This walk is set around the Hambleton Peninsular. This part of Hambleton is the only part of the town which remained after Rutland Water was created in 1975-76. It’s now a beautiful area for walking, cycling and sailing.

We took the circular 6-mile walk around the Hambleton Peninsular. The walk hugs the shore of Rutland Water pretty much the whole way. This really is a great walk on a mild day and when you want to be close to the water.

This route is very well signposted all the way around, and as the pathways hug the shoreline it is quite easy to follow. You can pick up the route in several places, and you can also adjust the length of the walk and even lengthen it to include more of the reservoir.

I’m on my lead for this walk as there are lots of sheep and we need our space! And I need to keep out of the water as algae might be present (this is really harmful to us dogs.)

There are stunning views wherever you turn and the route travels through lovely woods too. I loved walking in the woods and Mum made me pose for some cute photos with the bluebells!

It’s mainly quiet with not many humans or paw friends around

to disrupt our peaceful walk. The route has a proper path so no need for a paw wash today.

As we finish our walk Mum got my drink bottle out and she brought me a tasty treat too; I do love her. I sat and watched as Mum took in the view for a moment and then we headed back home.

There are touchstones in our everyday lives that perhaps we don’t even notice at the time – the regularity of bin collectors as their vehicle rumbles down the road – the posties out on their rounds. When we get older and look back on our childhood it is often these things you remember. I recall the coalmen who I found slightly foreboding with their coal dusted clothes and head covering with a leather flap down the back to protect them from the heavy sacks that they carried, the rag and bone man on his horse and cart, and the milkman his cart jingling with milk bottles as they progressed up the road.

Well, since 1994 the little black Ringtons van with its gold lettering has been a regular sight in the Deepings. Gary has been the Ringtons man here for the last three years and he says:

A quick roundup of the past year

At the elections last May I was honoured to receive your votes and to have the opportunity to speak up for the Deepings at South Kesteven District Council meetings. The time has gone very quickly and it has been fascinating learning about the processes and procedures of local government and participating in so many debates about the best ways to deliver great services across the region. A quiet revolution is taking place in a new era of openness.

Change ahead. The weeks between the end of April and early May herald a significant period of change in council activity at local, District, and County levels. Voting for the Crime Commissioner takes place on 2nd May, as well as SKDC Cabinet and Committee membership which are due to be renewed or revised. We also wait to see who will be elected as Mayor of Market Deeping at the next full Council meeting in May and who will join us as a new councillor for the town.

The Deepings Neighbourhood Plan (DNP) Group held its AGM in April and the following is an extract from my Chairman’s Report:

“Having been elected to the DNP Chairman role in April 2023, I am delighted to report that the group has worked positively on behalf of residents towards achievement of the DNP long-term Vision and Objectives for the neighbourhood. In addition to the monthly meetings, many additional project meetings have also taken place by various sub-groups as required i.e. with representatives from Land Agents, Allison Homes, SKDC, Aecom Consultancy, New River Retail, Lincs CC, Friends of Millfield, and others.

Reminder about commenting on a planning application. When a planning application is submitted to SKDC, a yellow notice is attached to the nearest lamppost with the details, reference number and the dates of the consultation period. It invites us all to look up the plans and make our views known. The Town and Parish Councils also receive the details to debate and make comments. Residents are welcome to attend and speak about their own or other applications at the start of these local meetings. If any application is contentious, residents can request their SKDC Councillor ‘call it in’ so that the matter can be debated and decided at the SKDC Planning Committee in Grantham. Members of the public can also register to speak at these meetings so that any concerns can be heard.

We also engaged with a public presentation of Outline plans for the development site west of Peterborough Road and held a public consultation at the Christmas Market displaying the draft new Design Code for the Deepings.”

It is encouraging to note that the DNP local policies are now frequently referenced in planning applications and quoted within SKDC Planning Officer Reports. They are being used as intended - to guide the development of land across the Deepings in accordance with the wishes of the residents. The Neighbourhood Plan updating process will begin later this year.

There is currently slow progress with the development of Aldi supermarket and Deeping Leisure Centre due to complex legal issues - but both remain as active plans.

Review of the South Kesteven Local Plan has taken place and responses from Town, Parish and DNP were all returned to the Planning department before the end of the consultation period on 25th April. We have unanimously stated that there is currently no requirement to include Millfield as a residential development site and have explained all the valid reasons why it should be retained as a green space. This stance is formally supported in writing by Sir John Hayes. We await the revised version of the SKDC Local Plan with interest.

The shoulders and the muscles around them are like the roots of a tree. Your neck is the trunk and your head is the head of the tree. If the root is not feeding the rest of the tree properly, it will not be healthy. This can be the cause of neck problems and headaches. Think what is underneath your shoulders and upper chest – it’s the upper lung. When we breathe, the ribs and shoulders are supposed to move. If they have become tight and are not moving much then breathing will be restricted. Freeing your shoulders allows you to breathe more easily. This will increase your lung health and thus be good for your heart. What’s good for your heart is good for your brain. Tai Chi and Qigong are excellent ways of progressively freeing up your shoulders – and for that matter the rest of your body.

Fitness in Deeping since ‘95

Starting with a step class at the Leisure Centre. There were about 70 participants per class. At least a dozen from the early days that still attend today. Currently we have mixed ages from 14 +, the majority being 40+. Dancefit started in 1996, still running. It’s fun; easy routines danced to great music, followed with resistance, bodyweight and Pilates exercises. Lifefit is the newest class and works on stopping muscle loss, and improving bone density using resistance bands, bodyweight and free weight exercises. We work on improving mobility and balance; with great tunes to inspire. Pilates and Yoga blend is as it says and is a popular class. The knee is the largest joint in the body and is one of the most frequently injured. Knee pain can have a number of different causes and can be painful and debilitating and although some conditions may require surgery many can be helped with the right advice, exercise and treatment. Damage, strain or sprain to the structures of the knee can give rise to symptoms. It can be the result of a sudden injury or by repeatedly placing strain on an area of the knee. Poor alignment of the knee or kneecap and altered joint mechanics in relation to other joints, such as the hips and knees, can also be significant. Osteoarthritis or wear and tear is a common condition that affects the knee. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness, aching, locking, swelling, limping and difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee. Harriers and Hares, Swifts and Hedgehogs

This month will see the Swifts screaming across our skies. As I wax lyrical about all the time, dear reader, these are among my favourite birds and one that will forever be a link to my childhood. As a kid, we would visit my grandparents Bowell’s in Eastgate, Bourne, where the old houses and barns would have nesting Swifts by the dozen. Even my grandparents’ bungalow had a Swallow nesting above their seldom used front door. These aged structures were perfect homes for Swifts (and Swallows alike).

My grandmother, Marion, would eagerly sit on their garden chair, under the kitchen window, every spring waiting to announce the arrival of her beloved Swifts. In the past decade or so, just like the rest of the country, the Swifts arrival got later and their numbers less, and this was noted by my grandmother, in her late 80s. Swifts were being squeezed out as the old buildings were bulldozed for new affordable human housing but still Marion remained vigilant in watching for them.

Sadly, we lost my Nan on the 9th April. It was my Dad’s hope that we would get to take her out to see ‘her’ Swifts one last time but sadly she could wait no longer to be with Grandad who, you may remember, I wrote about losing late last year.

While I’ve already penned a tribute to Grandad and his profound affinity for wildlife, it’s essential to acknowledge the pivotal role of his ‘Maid Marion’. There’s a reason my nephews and niece affectionately dubbed her ‘Great Marion’.

Nan had a mischievous wit and an indomitable spirit, her diminutive stature belying a larger-than-life presence (not least because she rarely drew breath for talking!). Her sense of humour was unparalleled, endearing her to all who knew her.

Though not an expert on wildlife, Marion harboured a deep affection for it. Apart from Swifts, she harboured a soft spot for Hedgehogs. My parents affectionately recount when they visited one dark autumn night, to find the whole house in darkness and my grandparents with a young hedgehog on their kitchen scales, weighing it, fearing it was undernourished and ill-prepared for the winter ahead.

Their love and care of wildlife on their doorstep saw a neighbour bring a young Jackdaw they had found in a gutter to my Nan and Grandad’s house. They nurtured ‘Jack’, until it was able to fend for itself, though it was a constant visitor for over a decade, even bringing its offspring along.

During my youth, my grandparents would take me sailing on their modest boat, from Surfleet into the Wash, fostering my burgeoning love for birdwatching. Witnessing the spectacle of thousands of waders and geese at the mouth of the Welland left an indelible impression on me, and Nan’s eager inquiries about what I could spot only added to the experience, which thoroughly cemented my love of birds and birdwatching.

would get up early and take the dinghy out. Grandad would take Nan a cuppa in bed and she would ask if he could see me. His response was always the same ‘Yes, my lovely.’ She never believed him; she knew I was just a speck on the horizon but close enough to hear her shouting, ‘Eric, Eric, can you see him?’

Marsh Harriers became emblematic of those cherished days on the boat, a species that will forever remind me of my special grandparents and those days. They were a lot rarer then than they are now but even now I still get a buzz from seeing them.

Driving through the fens with my grandparents, we’d often pause to admire Hares, a creature they both adored. I even recall Grandad confronting hare coursers once, but that’s a tale for another time.

My Nan was a bird spotter to the end. On a journey, only a month or so ago, when Dad took her home from a coffee in town, she spotted a Red Kite. She insisted Dad tell me that it was her that spotted it first.

Nature formed an integral part of my bond with my grandparents, and I’ll forever cherish their role in introducing me to the wonders of the natural world.

With plans for a pop-up restaurant outside their opening times, they are looking forward to welcoming old friends and new to their light and airy cafe surrounded by fields and beautiful artwork. Five great aspects ofCottageUnique Studios

Staring your week with a boost of creativity is offered by artist Jacs Harris in her studio which she follows up with a series of workshops throughout the month, covering a variety of techniques from printmaking to charcoal landscapes. Studio potter and Market Deeping local Fiona Swepson at Hopscotch Pottery and Kelly Moore offer pottery classes on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Textile artist and teacher Angela Daymond specialises in kantha stitching and natural dyeing. Restoring a piece of furniture is the stock in trade of Lee Deary of Finch & Toad, who happily share their skills in workshops at the Studios. Engaging with art, story and nature is Rose Croft, who offers workshops out in the community. Gillian Wing is an eco printer with workshops at the Studios. Fiona Gurney is the go to mosaic artist to be seen locally at the Frost Fair and offers workshops on the technique.

This is the eleventh year of opening in the National Garden Scheme for Willow Holt.

Their two acres were assembled as a building plot in 1960 from a slice of farmer’s field and old gravel workings which became the local tip. Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale. We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
