Empowering the communities by natural dyes of batik Words & Photos by : Saiful Kundo & Aji Manuhara

Should help the poor and preserve the heritage for the next generation. This Javanese wisdom support Rosso, a batik fashion designer to create his businesses of natural dyes of Batik. The natural dyes of batik preserves environment, the heritage and empowered communities surround “At first, it was not easy convincing people to join with natural dyes of Batik businesses,” Rosso said, “It was reasonable since most of batik made from chemical coloring dye at that time.” the natural dyes have more uncertainty in color. Therefore, it is not easy to create this kind of Batik. He needs distinctive techniques in painting and coloring them. Therefore, when it has been made, the product has it owns outstanding quality compare with the ordinary ones. Apart from coloring technique difficulty, Rosso also has to struggle in finding the plant resources to meet the production demand. For instance, to create the red colors, Rosso used roots of Indian mulberry or root and trunk of mangrove. To create the blue colors, he used trunk and leaf of Tarum plant.

20

21

Meanwhile for the light green and the brown color he used the mango leaf. All the plants should be provided in adequate quantity. The farmers support in providing the plants for his production process are undeniable. Responable support “This business has its own energy because it involves many people, from the farmers and the workers surround,” Rosso believe, “And the positive spirits come from the environment will be reflected in best quality product. ”No wonder, his business is increasing. Step by step he opens many outlets in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali. The demand surges as people becoming more and more understand about his best quality batik product. Still, the barriers come. The earthquake stroke Bantul and the rest of district in Jogjakarta in 2006 almost sent him and his business to bankruptcy. But the spirits that come from God and people surround push him up to wake and start all over again. Remarkable, not for long, in 2007 he has opportunity to be known worldwide. He join with an International fashion exhibition called Netherland’s Tong Tong Fair which automatically opening the European market for his products. By now, Rosso and his staffs are still trying to develop the new kind of natural dyes of batik. “We believe in learning become long live learners we will able to survive in this global fierce competitive market,” he said. Yes, if there is a will, there is away. So, well done, Rosso, keep introducing the natural dyes of batik from Jogja to the world! (ful)

Everyone are rushing to be standardized as world-wide known professionals through International certified standard of skill, knowledge, and taste while putting aside their beautiful uniqueness talents and perspectives. According to Wikipedia, the mass production defines as the production of large amounts of standardized products, including and especially on assembly lines. The concepts of mass production are applied to various kinds of products, from fluids and particulates handled in bulk (such as food, fuel, chemicals, and mined minerals)

philosophic classes. Wait a minute, a little bit weird? How those classes links to the book store? And how it can strive back against mass production? Wait until you find the explanation

to discrete solid parts (such as fasteners) to assemblies of such parts (such as household appliances and automobiles). It sounds good, so why we bother? But wait, the mass production which leads to industrialization has several negative effects. One of those was the affect it had on the environment. The towns boomed with population growth. People were very unclean and threw their sewage and waste out their windows to be washed down the gutters in the streets. Factories and workers’ housing were mixed together. Air pollution from burning coal got much worse.

That’s why together with her friends, he intend to share the values and spirit by create Tobucil or Toko Buku Kecil, in Bandung. Its goal is not only to share the reading book habit but also creating the place for many communities and hobbies to express and share their ideas. So, apart from the books you may find many crafting, discussing and writing classes here. There are book scrapping classes, book review classes, sewing classes and

The mass production

After the World War II, the industries of mass production reduce the human values into the machines. The quantity, the volume and the uniformity is becoming more and more important. There is no place for uniqueness, the differences. It reflects in daily products such as outfits, books, shoes,

Industrialization required work from many people and they were willing to accept the work no matter how unethical it seemed. Poor families had to work hard to make ends meet and this meant their children had to work as well

A Quiet Statement against Mass-Production

So then, a bunch of people commits to strive back against the mass production products. Without yelling and rallying on the street they fight by creating the handmade products silently. The handmade products

will lead people learning to fulfill their daily need by themselves. Starting from creating the book scrapping, the outfit, the shoes and other daily products, people will notice that actually they could fulfill their own need by themselves. Slowly but sure, through word of mouth social media campaign, the movement initiated by Tobucil have inspired 2500 people to join with in klabbaca@ yahoogroups.com and facebook. Tarlen hopes that the members will act as the agent of changes, spreading this movement around Indonesia. And soon or later, this country and the people live in it will be able to stands by their own feet. And when the time comes, they will be able to save themselves and their family from the outbreak of mass productions flooding in the next global market in 2020. So then, have you prepared yourself?

RUMAH CEMARA :

FROM ZERO TO HERO Words & Photos by :Saiful Kundo & Tigor Sihombing

The community rises from being pariahs to become something that many can be proud of. They prove that people with HIV should be supported instead avoided to show achievement. Fighting AIDS is not the same as isolating the ones infected with the disease.

Rumah Cemara, located at Jl. Geger Kalong Girang No 52, Bandung, West Java, is among many NGOs interested in the HIV/AIDS advocacy issue. A couple of weeks ago, The Zes visited RC for the first time and found heart-warming situation that surely shall provide comfort for drug addicts and HIV sufferers that the NGO treats. Escorted by Kheista Leonie C, a beautiful and pleasant lady who serves as the NGO’s Public Relations Officer, we entered the front yard and found a motorbike wash business facility, the workers of which are actually the residents of RC. Going further inside the place, we encountered young people working in front of their computers. We were gestured to sit down in the waiting room, which turns out to be the center of

32

activities in the house. There, the residents could be found singing together, accessing the Internet, and laughing out loud. Awards and certiďŹ cates that RC has got are displayed on the one side of the wall. On the other side of the wall, there are pieces of papers containing words of wisdom to motivate RC residents. We felt no fear at all in interacting with the HIV sufferers and drug addicts there. Instead, we were further interested in knowing more about them and Leonie patiently responded to questions that the Zes asked. Leonie told that RC was run by former drug addicts, thus, creating a safe and secure environment that embraces drug addicts and HIV sufferers.

33

RC, which is supported by Asoka International Foundation, doesn’t only rehabilitate drug addicts and HIV sufferers since they also create a positive program focusing on soccer, a favorite activity within RC which teaches anyone to uphold the principle of fair play. The Success of DKRC fusion In 2011, RC, which has a soccer team called Dalam Kaum Rumah Cemara Fusion (DKRF) started its focus on soccer and was finally able to meet the invitation to join the Homeless World Cup (HWC) 2011 event held in Champ de Mars, Paris, France, from August 21-28. The Future of Indonesia’s Social Media and Digital World: Forecast for 2012 By : Takhta Pandu Padmanegara

41.777.240, 872.461,

5.600.000,

3.725.258

Do the series of numbers above have some significance for Indonesia?

Have no idea? How about these numbers? 41,777,240 Facebook users in Indonesia (the second largest in the world), 872,461 Linkedin Indonesia users, 5,600,000 twitter users and 3,725,258 members of Kaskus, all of them are in 2011 alone. Fantastic, isn’t it? The rapid growth of digital world as well as a significant surge in the number of digital service users in Indonesia, from those logging in to the Internet to those using smart phone, or from those making brand campaign online to those subscribing to paid twitter, are really hard to ignore. In 2011, we also saw a behavioral shift in how people communicate, make decision, use media, and go shopping. In communication, instant messenger (blackberry messenger, whatsapp messenger, and other forms of instant messages) have become primary instruments to connect to each other. In fact, when we do things like mention/direct message in twitter, it feels that we really know the person well despite the fact that we have never met even once with him or her

TakhtaPanduPadmanegara (@padmanegara) Social Media Manager, Klix Digital

36

The shift in the way of communication also influences the spread of online communities. Hobby-based communities as well as social movements, such as Indonesia Berkebun (@idberkebun),AkademiBerbagi

Augmented Reality, Sense Eye Technology, Location Based, and other latest technologies will be integrated with social media, leading to the creation of more personal outputs. Such a convergence will be used for various objectives, such as for book launching, events socializing how to activate brand, restaurant promotion, billboard digital, vending machine, and others. The Rising of Mobile Apps Data by Digital Consumen Nielsen Indonesia revealed a possible increase of 67% in the market penetration of smart phone this year will make 2012 the year of mobile apps.

(akademiberbagi.org/@akademiberbagi), Blood For Life (@bloodforlife), Indonesia Bercerita (@idcerita), and other communities are equally growing significantly. There has also been a growing trend in online shopping or eCommerce. Research by Daily Social showed that 26% of their respondents said they surfed/browsed for products, 25% made price comparison before making offline purchase, and 38% surfed for potential products before buying them online. What is interesting from the research, 92% of customers were satisfied with their online shopping.

Mobile Site complemented with mobile apps will become one of the most important tools to make campaign, create direct access to consumers, and foster online communities. Some even predict that photo-based apps (such as instagram and others) will become the most favorite apps in 2012. How Social Commerce Responds to Gap in E-Commerce The main problem with Indonesia’s e-Commerce last year was it had yet been able to provide a comprehensive user recommendation solution. Furthermore, it was still too preoccupied with SEO (Search Engine So, what will 2012 have in store for us? Based on some data, insights, and global as well as local trends, I shall forecast what will happen in 2012 More Focus onngagement In 2011, we saw many institutions/brands had just started experimenting with the uses of digital and social media. Therefore, indicators to measure the success of any campaign still focused on quantity (such as from the number of followers, fans, and clicks). Fortunately, the launch of Facebook content engagement insight has made many brands realize that number is not everything. It will be of no significance to have a huge number of fans/followers if it turns out that they are not engaged enough to make purchase or bolster sales. So, in 2012, focus on how to enhance engagement should become a top priority for every campaign. Convergence between Technology and Social Media LivetweetInteractive Display, Kinect Technology, Projection Mapping,

Optimization) strategy. However, the concept of social commerce will come in to respond to those problems. The concept will integrate websites with social networks, making it suitable for registration as well as for creating display on Facebook Page with store apps directly supported by online payment system. Wide Practice of Social Media In 2012, Indonesia’s digital world in general will find several additional industries using social media to do promotion, such as the healthcare, banking, retail, travel, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) industries. I hope the forecast will be able to help us catching a glimpse into the future of digital world in Indonesia. Since it is only a forecast, it may be right or completely miss the target. One thing for sure, however, we do all hope that the digital and social media world in Indonesia will be better. The big question is, have we really been fully ready for it?

When you and your family decide to spend your weekend in Bandung, where do you want to go? You may go shopping along in Factory outlets lies on Cihampelas street or try to taste the delightful culinary around Bandung, the Bumi Parahyangan. But, still for the ones who want to explore another side of Bandung city, they may found many other leisure destinations to visit. Last week, the Zes team has opportunity to visit Dago Pakar, an arboretum (town forest) that suit for you who wants to experience outbound activities and be entertained by the beautiful of nature around the location. Located on Jl. Ir. Juanda, Dago Pakar is still inside district of Bandung. It distance only 7 km from the down town Bandung and you may reach the location around 15 minutes. By Rp8000 per person you may enter the park for all day long. At first, it reminds us for the beauty of Lembang with its green scenery and fresh-breath air. But in here, in Dago Pakar, you may find something more interesting: the Holland and Japanese caves. The Caves: There are two main caves in Dago Pakar: The Holland cave and Javanese cave. The Holland cave When you entering the cave you will feel like brought back in time in old era of World War I and World War II. Build in 1918 by the Holland soldiers, back then, the cave was designed for the tunnel of Electricity Power to support Holland army. In World War II, the cave was used as communication center of Holland army. And in Independence era, Indonesian’s army used the cave as weapon warehouse. The cave itself consist of 14 tunnel and some rooms such as interrogating room, the jail, the communication center room and weapon’s warehouse. Japanese Cave Only 500 meters from the Holland cave, you may found the Japanese cave which build in 1942. The cave was built by the rock and the sand. It consists of many confusing tunnel that will make you lost. No wonder, since the cave was built by Japanese army (by forcing the local people known as Romusha system) as a hiding place from the enemy.

41

When tired exploring the café you may loosen up yourself in bamboo house called ‘saung’ nearby the cave. Don’t forget to try tasting traditional food such as corn barbeque and many traditional drinks as well. For sure, you will experience new things while spending your weekend at Dago Pakar. In Box: Ciburial Future Land : developing the potential travel destination in Ciburial village. As part of empowering program, the local government has a plan to build Ciburial village as well-known travel destination in Bandung. Some of the potential site spots to develop are: Prabu Siliwangi legend, Holland and Japanese cave spots, Korkon KQ 380 spoys, Singgagati hills, bell stone legend, Curuk Dago waterfall and other beautiful nature spots. But still, the government has a concern for sustainable development: which means the build of Ciburial village should accommodate the need, the aspiration and the support of the local villagers. To support the program, they held Urban Design Competition to find the best offer and design in build Ciburial village as destination sites without scarifying the environment and communities surround.

Gudeg PAWON Words & Photos by : Aji Manuhara

Tasty Gudeg from Yogya It is midnight and the street is understandably quiet. However, a different condition can be found at Gudeg pawon. There is a long queue of people there spilling into the street. These people want to get their way into a joglo house. Normally, guests to a house will enter their host’s house through the front door. But, this time is unique as these people are patiently queuing for their way to Pawon (Javanese term for “kitchen”)

54

Located at Jl. Kusumanegara, Janturan no.36, Yogyakarta, we can say the place is located in the middle of a humble village. However, this seemingly isolation doesn’t discourage people from going there. Opening at 22:30 and closing operation only after the cuisine is sold out, the culinary site is frequently visited by guests from a vast group of people. “Our customers are varied. Some are from surrounding communities and some others are from Yogya as well as from outside the city. During holiday, Jakartans and people from Batam also often stop by here. We also have londo (foreigners) as our guests,” told Pak Wanto. A 50-year old married man with three children, Pak Wanto is the owner of Gudeg Pawon, which is a family business with a long legacy. Gudeg Pawon was founded in 1958 by the late Mbah Prapto, the mother of Pak Wanto. Initially, she was a hawker. Moving her vendor into pawon was not intentional as it happened when Mbah Prapto got ill and had to delegate her business to her child. It turned out that her child’s cook had unpleasant smell since her child cooked the menu too long, leading customers to call the menu “Gudeg Sangit” (Gudeg that has unpleasant smell). Mbah Prapto was appalled to the name. “As a result, she cooked her food and served its customers in pawon, which made people now call the menu “Gudeg Pawon”. Another nickname for the food is Gudeg Setan (Devil Gudeg) since the restaurant opens at night. Gudeg Pawon tastes different from common gudeg. Instead of the normal taste of sweet and light, Gudeg Pawon is more tasty and has natural spice flavors. Moreover, the gudeg is served medium dry instead of regular wet. The food, which is cooked from 12:00 to 22:00, is the one pioneering Gudeg Pawon in Yogjakarta. Around 100 diners visit the restaurant daily, generating an average monthly sales turnover of Rp 100 million. (mjr)

With his hyper realist style, Iwan able to express his imagination through Flora and Fauna elements that always present in all his paints. ” I like the elements of flora and fauna because they are honest; they are what they seem,” he explained, when the ZES team met him at his house-studio in Depok, “More over, those elements make me feel more connected to the universe.” Iwan, who has been a painter since 20 years ago had produced many realistic painters (3D). Differ from ordinary paints, Iwan’s paint able to present the pictures that seem so real and looks alike emerge from the frame. Since 1996, he had implemented the integrated-frame technique which

One of his strong uniqueness that difficult to be imitated by other painters is his ability in creating batik technique. He implements this technique to almost all his painting. This technique consists of some steps. At first, he draws preliminary objects dominated by dark colors, which seems like batik motives. Then, he will paint his imaginative object. Iwan, the husband of Cut Irna, admits that most of his object inspired by Chinese art such as fish, tiger, Peony flowers, and others. Still, despite of his existence in the world of painting, Iwan feels need to learn more and be innovative. Back then, when he had created the solo exhibition, some of the painters undermine his piece of art severely. The lesson learned from the incidence was that next time, he had to be more patience and be prepared in facing people’s opinion that probably against his taste of art. Fortunately, his only son, Muhammad Kemar Putra Suhaya (8) is now trying to follow his steps as a painter. “I let him to paint anything. BED PEACE FOR JOHN LENNON Words & by : Tigor Sihombing

December 8th is always commemorated by the Beatles mania worldwide as the date when John Lennon died. How does the legend die actually? At 10:50 pm, when the couple returned to their apartment, they found Chapman was still standing, waiting for them. All of a sudden, Chapman yelled at Lennon, “Mr. Lennon!” and shot him five times with his revolver Special 38. Shocked, Yoko then rushed his husband to Roosevelt Hospital, but it was too late. Lennon, born on October 9, 1940, finally had to meet its maker on the still young, robust age of 40. What is more surprising in this tragic story, Chapman, the shooter, happened to still stand next to John Lennon until the police came and arrest him. Later, the doctors found Chapman as a psychopath. Nevertheless, although he is no longer with us since over thirty years ago, Lennon and his group, the Beatles, are still alive in the hearts of their fans. Lennon’s idea of peaceful living has inspired and enlightened many people worldwide to promote the creation of a more harmonious world, precisely like he preaches in his probably the most popular song as a soloist as well as the anthem for peace For The Beatle mania—the popular name for

a film by Khusnul Khitam.

Sugeng is a debt collector. His daily activities are preoccupied with collecting late installment payment from customers. Sugeng comes from a poor family and has just committed himself to a marriage, for which he had to borrow money from Boim, his friend. This situation has motivated Sugeng to work as debt collector to support his small family and service his debt. However, Sugeng gradually sympathizes with the people from whom he has to collect payment as they turn out to have complicated economic problems. The inner conflict is further growing when he also has to pay out his debts. To resolve this conflict, Sugeng then decides to sell his wedding ring to help the debtors paying for their debts. His company, unknowing that Sugeng has helped out the debtors, is surely happy with Sugeng’s supposed performance in collecting payment and rewards him with bonus. On the other hand, the debtors perceive Sugeng as their angel. DEBT is written by Khusnul Khitam, known as Tatam by his friends. Tatam informed that the idea of the movie came from a true story of a debt

Behavioral change in transportation indicates that people have to shift to non-fuel transportation means, such as bicycle. “We cannot fully rely on the government to come up with the solution,” Toto said. “Instead, we have to act swiftly, right now and right away.”

The show, which was held from December 16-18, 2011 at Hall D2 of JI-Expo Kemayoran, exhibited around 400 cars of various kinds. Here, we can find a car manufactured in 1910 as well as Vintage, Classix, Sport, Youngtimer, Retro, Modern Classic, and Future Classic Sport Cars owned by Indonesian and foreign collectors alike. It is no wonder the show was able to attract visitors from Jakarta and other regions During the three-day show, the organizer had been educating people and helping classic car lovers fulfilling their longing for their dream cars. “Since Jakarta Classic Car Show was first held in 2007, I have never missed out to come here to Jakarta, ” said Ramli, a visitor from South Sumatra. The show has been successful in sparking people’s interest in classic cars. Furthermore, the show proves to be an ideal meeting place for classic car lovers. “As a result, the number of visitors coming to Jakarta Fair, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, has increased by 7,000 visitors from 13,000 visitors last year to 20,000 visitors this year,” informed Asman Oesman, the Organizing Chairperson of OICC-Show. The show, which was officially opened by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, is recognized as the largest and most complete classic car

show in Southeast Asia, thanks partially to the exhibitions of six restored exotic and rare cars, which also became the ”Stars of The Show” at the OICC-Show 2011. The shapes and types of the restored cars exhibited are astounding. They are MercedesBenz 220SE Cabriolet (1960), Mercedes-Benz 190SL (1955), Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda (1971), Pontiac Firebird (1969), Ford Mustang (1968), and Datsun Fairlady 240Z (1972). Organized in an indoor area of 10,000 square meters and an outdoor area of 16,000 square meters (three times bigger than the last location at Kartika Expo Center, Balai Kartini), the show is able to accommodate more classic cars and give more rooms for communities to hold gathering. Also, the show is more complete as it offers more spacious park and outdoor areas. During the show, visitors can watch and participate in various interesting activities. There, we can find some traders selling classic cars, manufactured more than 30 years ago. We can also go to spareparts bazaar, attend photography workshop, and watch live music and classic car drifting show.

Mind Over Matter

Nine disabled bikers undertake arduous trekking from Jakarta to Bali.

Mind over matter It is Yunara’s previous journey with his beloved wife, Rahma Anggraini, 31, to undertake the Sabang – Merauke route that originally inspires the recent trek. “If we can do it, everybody surely should be able to do the same,” he motivated. And now, by the end of 2011, he had asked other disabled friends to join them in overcoming the current challenge. Those friends are Rico Milano (41), Sansan Sanjaya(50), Ishak Santika M (19), Wahyu Fitrianto(28), Alriyanto(29), Oyi Sukandar (38), and Siswandi (25).

It was Sunday morning on December 11 and at 7.30 sharp. Nine disabled cyclists were geared to start their daring, arduous long journey from Jakarta to Bali. They expect to finish the ambitious trek on January 3, 2012. It was apparent that their disability didn’t bar them from undertaking the hard challenge at hands. “We have an utterly strong faith that we will be able to finish the route precisely as scheduled,” said Yunara, one of the cyclists.

Supports from surroundings “We really admire and lend our support to our friends for their spirit and courage in undertaking the challenge” Toto explained. “In this way, they will also support campaigns for biking nationwide,” told Toto, Chairman of Bike to Work Community in his welcome speech to the group at Hotel Indonesia Round (Bundaran HI), Jakarta. Bike to Work shows its support to the cyclist team by supplying them with safety jacket, uniform and other safety tools. Polygon and celebrities, such as Pepeng and Cici Tegal, are also among parties giving supports to the disabled cyclists.
