LEADING THE WAY
Supporting young girls to identify, develop and leverage their strengths from an early age can make a huge di erence in the way they view themselves, interact with others and lead their lives.
At Wakefield Girls’, there is a shared belief that big futures start early and the more depth and variety they o er as ways to help empower girls, the better. Early years is the time when children learn at the most significant rate and so encouraging leadership qualities and developing those skills early on is really important.
The school begins teaching girls to reach their potential as capable and strong leaders through a Little Leaders programme. This programme gives girls leadership opportunities and a platform from which they can learn skills and grow their confidence in a nurturing early years education environment. It is the way their pupils go on to great things after their journey on the 'Wakefield Way'. Happily empowering girls is the mission at Wakefield Girls’ and sharing how the next generation of women can confidently hold their own later in life is at the heart of everything they do. Role models play an important part because they are a fantastic way for students to see how leaders move through the world. At Wakefield Girls’, they expose their students to a variety of diverse, inspiring female leaders and consistently see how this benefits their students. Role models can also be found close to home and having some great relatable role models can be an excellent way to help your girl grow courageously to face the challenges that await.
Plenty of opportunities to develop and practise leadership skills is also key. Helping your girl(s) practise in everyday situations is something we can all do – for example, organising a family activity. At school, Wakefield Girls’ o er over 30 di erent types of leadership roles for students and specific enrichment activities every Thursday afternoon, to ensure there are lots of opportunities to practise, grow and develop.
With the importance of creating empowering opportunities for girls in mind, Wakefield Girls’ will host a free day event, #empowHER, on 23 June. The event is open to all girls aged 9-10 years, helping each to develop the skills that will empower them in the future through a series of carefully created workshops and by sharing the mindset of successful female leaders. Speakers include Lizz Wainwright, Head of Marketing Operations
Prime Video at Amazon; Sophie Browning, Business Apprentice at Nestle; Dr Kanika Kapur, Medical Advisor at Sanofi; Faith Ridler, Live Reporter at Sky News; Becky Baker CEO and Founder of K9 Nation; and Rebecca Ward, Sustainability Analyst at Radley Yeldar.
