emember, remember the fifth of November; this November, however, many will be thinking not of Guy Fawkes but of the brave soldiers and service men and women who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars to ensure our future. This November in particular, on the centenary of World War I, we thank them for their sacrifice and their courage. From the sublime to the ridiculous, this month’s issue is a little lighter in tone with a sneak peek at the new Paddington film, which stars two south east London locals, Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville as Mr and Mrs Brown. The cast give Pendle Harte a few clues of what to expect from the much-loved Peruvian bear on page 16. I also catch up with Kellie Shirley, star of stage and screen, to chat about her new play Great Britain, whether or not she misses Eastenders and why, after living in south east London for six years, she wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Read the interview in full on page 20. This month, the interiors section takes readers inside the Rivoli Ballroom, the only surviving 50s ballroom in London today. Turn to page 54 to discover the decadent Art Deco and dramatic neoclassical architecture within in this unique building. Finally, take a trip with television and radio personality Jamie Theakston as he explores the remarkable island of Langkawi, Malaysia. An assortment of jungle trekking and rock climbing, lakediving and legends, find out what he got up to on page 72. A time for remembrance but also a time to look forward, I hope your November is filled with anticipation for the future and (hopefully!) for my next issue. Enjoy! u

An integral part of the infamous Cambridge Five, Kim Philby spied for the Soviets from the highest echelons of the British Secret Service for over twenty years. Complex, but never bogged down by its details, this book of spy games and double crosses reads like Bond, and you won’t be surprised to see Fleming and Graham Greene pop up in the supporting cast. This enthralling bit of history will keep you hooked until the last page. u
A VIEW ON THE WAY DOWN b y R eb ecc a Wait P ica d or, £7.99 his debut novel is, frankly, stunning. Written T with extraordinary sympathy and a deft touch for dialogue, this is a deeply moving story. Reeling after the death of one son, and the departure of the other, Emma’s parents try to create a normal home for her, but can’t keep the cracks from showing. The mystery of Kit’s death and why Jamie disappeared is the thread that leads you through this brilliantly realised story of depression and its impact. u

he much anticipated biopic/ thriller centres around Alan Turing, the English mathematician and logician responsible for inventing the Enigma machine during World War II and cracking the Nazi’s code. Despite this crowning achievement, Turing’s later life is marred by accusations of, and finally a conviction for, gross indecency, for being gay. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role with Keira Knightley as his loyal friend and associate Joan Clarke in addition to a veritable who’s who of British acting talent, which includes Charles Dance, Mark Strong and Matthew Goode. Tipped as Oscar-bait, the film is certainly on the path to Academy Award glory, winning the ‘People’s Choice Award for Best Film’ at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. With the centenary of the First World War looming (it's no coincidence that The Imitation Game is opening in England in November, believe me) many filmmakers could be tempted towards saccharine tributes to the two greatest conflicts to impact our nation in the last few hundred years. Instead, let us hope that this film provides genuine insight into the life of a British hero at a truly unique time in our country’s history. Luckily, the stellar cast and positive feedback so far leave this movie-goer hopeful. u

addington is a London icon. This month’s long-awaited and starstudded feature film release confirms that. Paddington Bear, named as everybody knows for Paddington Station, where he is found, is taken in by the lovely Brown family of Windsor Gardens. It’s the first ever live-action Paddington film and producer David Heyman – of Harry Potter fame – and the computer generated bear marks a significant departure from the paper cut-out animations by Michael Horden for television in the 1970s. Scenes include Paddington on the tube, where he acquires a small dog before stepping onto the escalator in response to the sign 'dogs must be carried', and an unforgettable skateboarding sequence where the bear rolls down Portobello Road before being pulled along behind a routemaster bus. London for tourists this may be, but the cast is largely homegrown. Blackheath-bred Hugh Bonneville and Dulwich-born Sally Hawkins play alongside Julie Walters and Nicole Kidman, whose evil taxidermist character adds a whole extra plot dimension. The bear himself is voiced by Ben Whishaw and Michael Bond himself even has a Hitchcock moment. The affable and instantly recognisable Bonneville, who has recently soared to fame on the wings of the eponymous Downton Abbey, spent most of his early life in Blackheath. He describes his childhood there as

‘ridiculously happy’ and divided his time between there and school in Dulwich where his passion for the stage was ignited. Unsurprisingly, the now worldfamous actor hasn’t looked back. Bonneville shares the screen in Paddington with another south east Londoner, Sally Hawkins. In a reversal of Bonneville’s childhood, Hawkins was born in Dulwich before moving with her family to Blackheath, although both ended up at school in Dulwich with Hawkins attending James Allen's Girls' School. The daughter of two children's book illustrators and writers, Hawkins grew up in what she calls a ‘gingerbread house’ in Blackheath designed by 1950s architect Patrick Gwynne, apparently proving that for an idyllic childhood, nowhere beats Blackheath.
SCENES INCLUDE
an unforgettable
SKATEBOARDING sequence where THE BEAR rolls down PORTOBELLO ROAD The cast is without exception enthusiastic when quizzed on the subject of the film and its lead character. Bonneville, who plays Mr Brown, has fond memories of Paddington. ‘It was one of the first books I remember reading. I was enchanted by his adventures and remember wanting to go and see the sights of London. When I first received the script I was wary because I didn’t want my childhood memories messed with but by the end of the first page I was laughing out loud. Getting involved was a nobrainer.’ How does he explain Paddington’s enduring appeal? ‘He always resets the dial to a default position of optimism.’ Sally Hawkins, who plays Mrs Brown, unusually has no childhood memories of Paddington – this despite growing up in London. But she says: ‘It’s a universal story – we’ve all felt alone, without friends or family like Paddington does. He’s a
19 NH_Nov_Padington.indd 19
refugee who’s taken in and we can all relate to that, the feeling of not knowing where to put yourself. He’s trying to fit in and his English is very good but his table manners aren’t.’ Julie Walters, who plays Mrs Bird, the Browns’ housekeeper and ‘distant relative’ says: ‘Paddington is an innocent. He’s funny, sweet and truthful, always making innocent mistakes and being forgiven.’ And the story – is it an action
film? Bonneville’s not giving much away. ‘There’s plenty of action. Obviously with a taxidermist involved you can see where the story’s heading.’ You’ll have to wait until 28 November to find out more. u Paddington directed by Paul King is released on 28 November

PRESSES Eastenders star and stage sensation, Kellie Shirley, talks about new play Great Britain and why south east London can’t be beaten W o r d s C at h e r i n e H a l e s
CATHERINE HALES: What is Great Britain about? KELLIE SHIRLEY: The play is a satirical take on the current climate of the country. It’s completely wrapped up in politics, power and Page 3. So, it’s really about the ‘state of the nation’ and tabloid news. CH: What part are you playing in Great Britain? KS: I play two parts; one is Gemma Charles who works as a journalist for the Free Press [the fictional tabloid newspaper the play centres around] on the foreign news desk. She’s very earnest and is always pitching stories about Somalia and serious stories like that but it all falls on deaf ears. The other part I play is Stella Stone, a celeb who’s been hacked. She’s a Page 7 girl, a bit like a Page 3 girl but she’s flat-chested. CH: The play touches on a lot of issues that are incredibly raw… KS: All of it is so current. The play was kept secret until the verdict came out on the phone-hacking trial and it was weird not to be able to talk about it but it was massively exciting, too. CH: Has there been any backlash, considering the trial and the fact that several characters bear resemblances to members of the press? KS: They are all fictional characters! [Laughs] There hasn’t really been a backlash but its been interesting to see how people have reacted. Murdoch hasn’t been in to see it yet but Ed

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE Miliband has made an appearance. Some of the victims of the phone-hacking have showed up as well. CH: How does stage work compare to television? KS: It’s obviously a very different environment but I like to mix it up – variety is the spice of life, after all! With stage shows everything is very immediate, you have the audience right there and the reaction and the applause. Television has more distance. CH: Do you tend to prefer dramatic roles or comedic ones? KS: I do like a bit of snot acting, a lot of crying and emotion, but I am definitely a comic tart. I want laughter and clapping! [Laughs] CH: Do you miss your role playing Carly Wicks in Eastenders? KS: Yes, I love her. They left the door open for her so I still play her from time to time. I dip in and out. I still see quite a few people from the show. Brother dear [Matt di Angelo] came to see the play last week as did Barbara Windsor. CH: Is it fun to be starring in another play written by Richard Bean and directed Nicholas Hytner after being in One Man, Two Guvnors? What do you like about their style? KS: They are brilliant at making comedy that is wrapped up in drama. Richard Bean is such a great writer; he was a stand-up comedian and you can tell in his writing. CH: Do you ever feel influenced by previous actor’s interpretations of a role? KS: Not really. You have to make it your own otherwise you’ll never feel comfortable and confident on stage.
I DO LIKE a bit of snot ACTING, A LOT OF CRYING and EMOTION
CH: Is there any actress you count as a real inspiration? KS: Loads! I love Olivia Colman, she’s fantastic. Lorraine Stanley, Cate Blanchett. I really admire Andrea Arnold, too – she directed Fish Tank. The gorgeous Dame Judi Dench is massive inspiration, I worked with her briefly on film Run for your Wife a couple of years ago. Really, the list is endless. CH: What would be your dream part? KS: In a musical it would be Eliza Doolittle. Other than that, I’m very interested in new British Independent Film so a part in something seriously gritty would be amazing. CH: You live in south east London? KS: Yep, I’ve lived here for six years. CH: Do you have any favourite haunts? KS: So many! The Horniman Museum is
21 Dulwich_Nov_Kellie_Shirley.indd 21
great for a day out. For food there is a jerk chicken shop next to Selhurst Football Ground in Crystal Palace that has BBQ to die for. St. David’s Café in Forest Hill is full of actors so it’s perfect for learning lines and earwigging. I go to Bunka in Forest Hill for clothes and Le Chandelier in East Dulwich can’t be beaten for cakes. For a drink, The Montague Arms but for the perfect Bloody Mary it has to be the Sylvan Post. CH: Any recommendations in terms of entertainment? KS: Frank’s Café always has something going on in the summer when it’s open and the Bussey Building is home to the Royal Court’s new writing program so there are often interesting new plays shown there. Peckhamplex is brilliant for bargain cinema. CH: You seem to enjoy living there. KS: South east London is the nuts. CH: Other than acting, is there anything else you are passionate about? KS: I’m an ambassador for Mencap, which is incredibly important to me. At the moment I am fronting their campaign #hearmyvoice, it aims to give people with learning disabilities and who feel isolated by society a chance to be heard. u Great Britain will be at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until January 2015, 18 Suffolk Street, SW1Y; trh.co.uk

ounded as a boutique mail-order in 1963 by Polish F service designer Barbara Hulanicki and her husband Stephen FitzSimon, Biba quickly gained cult status, outgrowing several London premises before landing at 99–117 Kensington High Street in 1973 as ‘Big Biba’, ‘the most beautiful store in the world’. This new book marks 50 years of the iconic brand, charting its success from the first creations and through the four legendary London shops to the eventual flourishing of a lifestyle brand that revolutionised British retail and fashion culture. The book also features previously unpublished material, including early fashion illustrations by Hulanicki and fullcolour facsimiles of the six luxurious Biba catalogues, exploring all the while the ethos of a company which effectively became the first retailer to bring affordable fashion to the youth market. The Biba Years is a comprehensive insight into the Biba fashions of the time and those iconic pieces whose influence can still be felt on the fashion industry today. u

SOOTHING STUFF Health Hub London
Chanel's new lip colour, heavenly scents and professional advice on bare-faced beauty

e all know how debilitating a bad throat can be. This is often W sore tonsillitis, and if it becomes recurrent, a good way of treating it is with tonsillectomy. At HealthHub we recommend a technique called “intracapsular laser vapourisation tonsillectomy”. This technique removes tonsil tissue, but preserves the capsule of the tonsil - so that the muscle and blood vessels of the throat are not exposed/damaged. This technique, under a short day case general anaesthetic, allows an early return to work (48H) and greatly reduced pain and bleeding risk. However, the tonsils don’t only cause tonsillitis. There are a number of conditions that can occur due to tonsils, the most worrying being tonsil cancer. Other, much more common symptoms however are: lump sensation, bad taste, bad breath, tonsil stones (little cheesy white lumps often associated with bad breath), catarrh, chronic cough. Suspected tonsil cancer needs a biopsy. The other conditions though can often be treated by shrinking the size of the tonsil. This technique is called tonsillotomy, and is performed under local anaesthetic using spray only. This is a lunchtime treatment, you go to work in the morning, have it done at lunchtime, and return to work in the afternoon. It's quite common for more than one tonsoillotomy to be required (60%). This technique has almost no pain associated – we dont need to prescribe painkiller; over-the counter-medication is usually sufficient. u

Nude for fall make-up Wo r d s C h a r l o t t e C av e
ake-up for Autumn Winter is fresh, clean nude. We want to channel the M and romantic and the feminine this season – and for that we need a good hydrated base. I would go for the Sisley Black Rose Oil Facemask and a really good moisturiser. Trust me, if you haven’t had one for a while, take the opportunity to get a professional facial as we head into winter. For those who know me, the less-is-more philosophy (for make up at least) is something I always champion. My ‘Style by Ten’ philosophy is about finding your ten perfect products and then use seasonal trends for minimal accents. Keep your base simple for glowing and effortless skin. Nude palettes dominated all the catwalks - from creams and peaches to dark gold and browns. Illuminators such as Benefit High Beam and muted blushers are the key tools of choice and provide the light and shade for the face. With a nude face you need to concentrate on the cheeks and the eyes. Mascara is king this season - my favourites are by MAC and Maybelline - coupled with the reliable Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream – an old favourite that never goes out of fashion – which can be used on both eyes and lips. For a touch of extra sass, use a perfect red lip or a block of colour – either from Chanel or Bourjois. SCENT
We take a look at the two ground-breaking perfumers to watch this season W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e
R
ecently the vogue for independent perfumeries has seen people search out signature nonmass market scents which communicate individuality and the wearer’s honed sense of style. Launching in the UK this month is the über-elegant Perris Monte Carlo Perfume Collection, a new perfume house which focuses on the authenticity of ingredients and the artistic structure of the scent; perfumes for the cognoscenti. Intense, dark and mysterious; oud has been traded for millennia. Oud’s unusual natural history – it is an internal resin created by a diseased tree to protect itself – has resulted in the near extinction of naturally growing aquilaria trees. Now carefully and responsibly farmed, Oud Imperial by Perris is one of the few genuine, non-synthetic oud fragrances one can buy in confidence.
Taif , due to its paradisal location and extraordinary micro-climate, produces perhaps the most prized roses in the world and after extensive searching in the region Perris has found the best of the best. Rose de Taif is a light, wearable scent which is modern and clever; piqued with spicy nutmeg and clove and brightened with a soupcon of sparkling citrus. It is destined to become a classic, a perfume which transitions perfectly from day to night - an often overlooked consideration when selecting scent. Off the coast of Madagascar the island of Nosy Be is home to the most fragrant of flowers, the incredibly intoxicating ylang ylang - the ‘perfume tree’. So intense is the aroma of this plant that the island is known as the ‘Scented Island’. True to form Perris’ Ylang Ylang Nosy Be uses the island’s finest handselected blooms and the resulting scent is as sensually sensational as one would expect; a little citrus sits at the top, with a heart of jasmine and a warm, rich amber and vanilla base.
37 Dulwich_Nov_Perfume.indd 37
Derived from the Latin word meaning ‘to choose the best’ new British perfume house Electimuss takes inspiration from ancient Rome. To the Roman man and woman fragrance was an essential part of everyday life and leaving the house without wearing perfume would have been social suicide. Electimuss’ Saggita is made with the golden champaca flower, hailing for the Himalayas this soft, white blossom is mixed with a honeyed apricot and the bright fizz of yuzu and bergamot. Definitely one for the romantic, Saggita is Latin for arrow and it is said that one of Cupid's five arrows was made from champaca wood. Electimuss’ Rodanthe is also steeped in romantic imagery; the Romans believed the rose was created by the goddess Diana who turned the beautiful nymph, Rodanthe, into one so that she could escape her overly amorous suitors. There will be no such escape for the wearer of this seductive scent. Rodanthe is packed with robust Bulgarian roses and, combined with psychotropic moonflower, it is vibrant and otherworldly, with a touch of earthy patchouli keeping it grounded. Perris Monte Carlo and Electimuss are two of our current top-tips for trendsetting companies to watch; perfume history in the making. u

• 12 small Corn Tortillas (page 36) • ½ pineapple, peeled, quartered, cored, and sliced • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 4 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro (coriander) • Salsa of choice (pages 496–514) • Put the chiles into a saucepan, add the vinegar, and simmer for 15 minutes, until the chiles are soft. Add the garlic, cumin, and cloves, then transfer the mixture to a food processor or blender and process to a paste. Add more vinegar, if necessary, and pineapple juice, if using, and strain.
ME T HO D 01 Transfer the paste to a saucepan and cook over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent it from sticking. Remove from the heat and let cool. 02 Spread a thin layer of chili paste over the slices of meat. Stack them on a plate, cover them with plastic wrap (clingfilm), and let marinate in the refrigerator for 5 hours or overnight. 03 Heat the oil in a frying pan or skillet. Add the pork slices and cook for 2 minutes, turn them over, and cook for an additional 2 minutes, until partially cooked. Remove from the pan, cut into bite-sized pieces, and return to the pan. Add the onion and cook for another 3 minutes. Transfer the meat to a serving plate. 04 Put the tortillas, one at a time, into the pan and cook for 20–30 seconds on both sides. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels. Divide the pork among the tortillas, add the pineapple slices, onion, and cilantro (coriander), and top with salsa. Serve immediately. u

slightly on the full side when I came to approach my main. Despite this, I could not resist the sound of the Market Burger with short rib beef, marrow bone, candied bacon, American cheese, shoestring onions and fries. Not so full after all, then. For those amongst you who have not tried candied bacon, I cannot begin to describe how tasty it is. Salty, sweet and crispy, it hits the bacon trifecta. My burger was perfectly cooked and the (many) components complimented each other well without being overwhelming. My companion decided to go for the pulled pork mac 'n cheese with bacon and crackling crumble. Not a dish for those currently on a calorie counting diet but it was rich, creamy and had a fabulous texture due to the crumble. For pudding (yes, we had pudding too) we shared a gooseberry and elderflower panna cotta with pumpkin seed shortbread, which was subtle and flavoursome although admittedly we were not able to finish it. Hearty and with a lovely atmosphere, Richard 1st is everything you could want from your local, with a little extra thrown in. u

he face of London is constantly changing. Old mingles with new as historic buildings rub shoulders with recently constructed skyscrapers, all on the same street. Striking a balance is sometimes tricky but Richard 1st in Greenwich manages splendidly. Perched on the historic Royal hill, the pub opened in 1923 and became a community staple. It has recently been refurbished and had a conservatory added at the back. As I am lead through to the aforementioned conservatory, I can see the care taken to respect the original structure whilst adding a dimension of contemporary dining and design. The restaurant section is reasonably busy, creating a pleasant background
hubbub. As my companion and I settle down to examine our menus the fare on offer seems to be that of sophisticated pub grub; the classics with an original twist. Before moving onto the food we pick out a 2010 Crianza Rioja, which is superb. My companion lights on the salt beef and smoked potato croquettes with pickled cabbage while I go for a real pub classic, smoked ham on toast, Scotch egg and pickles. The croquettes are served piping hot and work best when combined with the pickled cabbage, creating a brilliant salty/sweet contrast. I insist that I need to have at least one and a half to properly assess them, as a result the croquettes disappear pretty quickly. My only criticism of the ham on toast and the Scotch egg is that, although incredibly yummy, they are pretty substantial for a starter – I was

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION I have had some beautiful new birds visiting the garden this year, goldfinches seem to have moved in so they will feature in their own tiny shadow boxes along with beetles and other creatures. I have also started producing etchings as well as screen prints. I am drawing directly on to plates with very sharp tools, so the lines are very spontaneous and delicate, this will be new for R.J.
ORIGINAL art is always SPECIAL, GOOD ART WILL transport you someWHERE
ARTCAFÉ natural world, he wrote textbooks and drew all his own maps and charts. Over time this family legacy has seeped into my work more and more. As a South Londoner for over 25 years, one could be disenchanted with city life. Looking at birds, beetles, foxes, plants and insects in my environment helps keeps life balanced. The creatures and plants we share our space with have become important to me. The sea is where I am from, my great grandfather was a sail ship captain and I am using his diaries to create a new, on-going body of work.
Being selected by the Imperial War Museum to design the Remembrance product range is quite an accolade; where did you take your inspiration from for this project? I was given a selection of different artefacts from the IWM collections and the stories of the people behind them and was asked to pick one as my inspiration, as well as being given the poem ‘Aftermath’ by Siegfried Sassoon as a starting point. I was drawn to this small, embroidered bag of wild roses made in hospital by a wounded soldier, Charles Frampton; after he died from his wounds this small, poignant little scrap of embroidery was left behind. What horrors he must have seen, but he took comfort and inspiration in his most desperate hour from nature. Nature signifies hope and renewal, something I can really relate to in my work. Charles’s wild roses are woven into my circular design that symbolises an eternal spring. u

Also, Patrick (the co-owner) is passionate about people engaging with the work, inspiring debate and conversation; it’s not about mere decoration. We see a lot of nature and marine life in your work, where does your inspiration come from? Some people are fearful of buying art as a gift - what advice would can you give? Never be afraid to give someone something you think is beautiful or exciting. Original art is always special, good art will transport you somewhere or make you think about something in a new light, even if just for a moment every day! If there is some kind of personal narrative or shared connection that draws you, then that will make it even more special for you and the recipient. Artists make art to share with people, so get sharing.

ondon Hidden Interiors reveals over 180 conserved interiors and celebrates their richness and diversity with nearly 1700 colour photographs. A collaboration with English Heritage, the authoritative text is written by Philip Davies, a former director of English Heritage while the photographs are largely the work of Derek Kendall, an English Heritage staff photographer for over 30 years. Many of the photographs were taken especially for this book and most have never been seen before. The Rivoli Ballroom is a rare surviving example of a full-blown 1950s conversion of a former cinema to a dance hall catering for the age of jazz, swing and rock and roll. Designed by Henley Attwater, it opened as the Picture Palace cinema in 1913 opposite Crofton Park Station in the suburbs of Lewisham. After various changes of venue, it was refurbished, extended and reopened in 1931 as the Rivoli Cinema seating 700. For the next 26 years it remained independently operated, until 1957 when it closed in the face of competition from the big cinema chains and television. After two and a half years lying dormant, it was adapted and converted to a ballroom by Leonard Tomlin, a local businessman and enthusiastic dancer,

The plush interior is a creative amalgamation of Art Deco, neo-classical and Oriental motifs to create an exotic venue for the increasingly affluent teenagers of the 1960s. The raked foyer, lined with Deco-style parquetry panels in dark wood inlay with diamond-shaped glazed centres, leads to the spectacular ballroom – a long barrel-vaulted room with a raised viewing dais, proscenium and stage with fixed banquette seating and a purpose-built, sprung Canadian maple dance floor. The lush exuberant

décor of red velour padded walls, gilt panels, scallop lights, French chandeliers and Chinese lanterns is wonderfully kitsch and redolent of the period of winkle-pickers and flared skirts. Along each side are two long narrow bars – one lined with booths and tables in leather upholstery resembling a railway carriage, the other with a front of tiled, interlaced Arabesque patterns. Beyond is a separate late 20th century function room with a ceiling covered in prints of Old Masters. Now achingly fashionable, many will recognise the offbeat interior as a backdrop for music and fashion shoots, DVDs and television series. magine this. You have a bright teenager; you are stumping up the fees for them to do their A-levels at private school, with tuition on the side. You guide them towards those coveted A* grades and a place at Oxbridge, or a Russell Group university. Yet when the results arrive, the As have become Bs and Ds – and even a U. But worse awaits when you discover that your precious genius was downgraded through no fault of their own, but rather because those marking the papers weren’t up to the job. This is no recurring nightmare of a Tiger Mother but scary fact. According to some leading heads in the independent sector, perfectly bright pupils at top private schools are being penalised because inexperienced markers cannot recognise A* material. Independent schools are making a record number of appeals against grades awarded in GCSEs and A-levels this year because of concerns over shortcomings in the marking process. It is believed the total number of re-marks demanded by schools will top 310,000. There is mounting anger amongst headteachers over exam standards, particularly in relation to more ‘subjective’, essay-based disciplines such as English literature and history. Examples of inaccurate marking include: u An AS-level politics student from Guildford High School achieved the equivalent of an E grade, even though her essay was regarded as so good that it was quoted in an examiner’s report as an example of outstanding work. The paper was re-marked as a B and – in a largely unprecedented step – graded a third time by the chief examiner to gain an A. u Brighton College has seen the total number of GCSEs graded A* in all

subjects jump, from 44.5 to 48.5 per cent, after re-marks of English and religious studies papers saw 200 pupils awarded an improved classification. u One pupil at Latymer Upper School was turned down by Durham University when one of his papers was rated a D grade. When the school asked to see his exam paper, they found the marks had been added up incorrectly, by 20 marks fewer, and that he should have received an A grade. By then Durham had withdrawn its offer and he will now go to his second choice university. Headteachers are demanding a revamp of the examinations system, including greater incentives for experienced markers and better standards of training.
67 Chiswick_Nov_Education.indd 67
Fiona Boulton, Headmistress of Guildford High, said: ‘Some staff don’t often come across A* material and therefore don’t recognise it when they see it. We don’t pay examiners enough… so the incentives to become a marker are significantly reduced.’ Glenys Stacey, chief regulator of Ofqual, the qualifications watchdog, said exam boards would be required to publish data from next year showing how many errors were down to individual markers or wider ‘system problems’ but insisted that ‘overall, the system of marking works well.’ But that is not what the qualifications watchdog has concluded about language A-Levels. Last month Ofqual announced that A-levels in Modern Languages would be marked more fairly from next summer, following an investigation which found that the brightest candidates were being denied A* grades by inconsistent marking and poorly designed exams. Ofqual’s findings were damning. It found that the marking and design of the exams were flawed and needed immediate reform. The report also concluded that the most able students were not getting the highest grades due to the way in which the marking rules have been designed by exam boards. Peter Hamilton, Chair of the Headmasters’ Conference Academic Policy Committee and Headmaster of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School said: ‘Thanks to the joint persistence of the state and independent schools’ languages associations, Ofqual will now be acting to correct historic injustices that have hugely damaged confidence in these exam grades over recent years.’ Headteachers will no doubt be keen to see if there are radical changes in the pipeline for other subjects, too. u

LANGKAWI
L
M a l ays i a
angkawi is one of only four populated islands out of Malaysia’s 99 island archipelago, located 30km off the northwest coast. This much I learnt from my 6-year-old’s school project ahead of our trip. In fact, by the time we limped off our 12 hour flight via Kuala Lumpur, there wasn’t much I didn’t know about this jewel in the Andaman Sea. Being almost adjacent to the Thai border, visitors to Phuket or Koh Samui will be familiar with the Langkawi vibe and the island is fast becoming a bustling tourist mecca. Back in the day, Langkawi attracted seafarers and traders bringing spices and silks from China and India. Langkawi’s hidden coves were also a haven for pirates who ruled the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. It is a land steeped in legends and shrouded in mysteries. Its past is filled with legendary tales of wronged maidens and lovelorn princes. The bestknown legend is that of Mahsuri, a beautiful maiden who lived here some 200 years ago. She was wrongly accused of committing adultery and sentenced to death by those who were envious of her. With her dying breath, she laid a curse upon the island that it should remain barren for seven generations.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST WHEN TO GO
void June – its very wet. I’d say the best times to visit is at the start of the year, around January or February time. I was warned by one of the locals that it can get busy during the Malaysian school holidays, when holidaymakers flock from the mainland. A
WHERE TO STAY
here are plenty of top notch hotels on Langkawi, most notably The Datai and The Andaman, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a better base for your holiday than the luxurious Four Seasons’ Resort, with its stunning pavilions and unrivalled service. The hotel is a village of pavilions, pools and beautifully landscaped gardens. We stayed in a Family Beach House, accessed via a quiet garden path that led to a private plunge pool and reflecting pond overlooking the Andaman Sea. The outdoor deck caters for lazy days with a large dining area and a sprawling daybed. The airy interiors accommodate two large living areas, a four-man spa bath, indoor and outdoor tropical shower rooms and a family-size walk-in closet. The children’s bedroom has an LCD screen television with a PS3 game console, with additional family-friendly amenities extending from beach toys and sandcastlemaking kits to toiletries and board games. T
LANGKAWI’S HIDDEN COVES were also a HAVEN for PIRATES who RULED the TURQUOISE
waters of the
ANDAMAN SEA
The Kids for All Seasons programme is a complimentary kids club that, whilst based in the childrens centre, uses the entire island as its playground. If our four and six-year-old boys weren’t flying kites or playing football on the beach, they were face painting or playing local instruments (thankfully, just out of earshot of one of the three restaurants on the resort that we frequented).
WHAT TO DO
f jungle trekking and rock climbing aren’t your thing, there’s not an awful lot to do on the island. We spent an afternoon on bikes riding through the rubber plantations and paddy fields, stopping briefly to watch the fishermen return with their catch at the village of Kuala Teriang. I
The Mangrove and Eagle Safari (an excursion organised through the Four Seasons) was a particular hit with the kids. In 2007 it was declared southeast Asia’s first UNESCO World Geopark. 550 million years of geological history have created an exciting natural habitat for walking fish, fiddler crabs, majestic eagles and kites, coiled snakes, otters and monitor lizards. It’s an ancient maze of limestone cliffs and tangled mangroves - a nature experience straight out of National Geographic, and we loved it. The kids fell in love with the mischievous macaque monkeys! If you want to get the best views of the island, you should head to the cable car at the foot of the Machincang mountains. Whilst on board the dizzyingly steep ascent you will see the Telaga waterfall and, if you’re lucky, hornbills and eagles. By the time we got to the top the cloud had moved in, but we still had a stunning panoramic view of Kedah and southern Thailand. One of the most beautiful places on the island is the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, a fifteen minute walk through the jungle. According to legend, a celestial princess married a mortal prince and gave birth to a baby, which died soon after. Heartbroken, she buried the baby in the lake, and before returning to her celestial home, she blessed the lake so that any maiden who wishes to conceive and who bathes there would become pregnant. It didn’t deter my wife who, as far as I am aware, isn’t pregnant. u

Best place to invest? It is increasing difficult to find good value for investors locally. My advice would be to look for locations offering convenient transport links and good schools. The most interesting property I have been involved in is... We recently sold a stunning house once owned by a member of the team responsible for the discovery of DNA. His study contents were gifted to the British Library.

The toughest sale and why? I think my first sale will go down as the toughest. No reason other than being utterly terrified of making a mistake.
Property I'd most like on my books and why? I would have to say the Rangers House at Greenwich Park. It is one of the most iconic buildings in the local area and architecturally stunning.
Finest property showcase... Blackheath Village, £1,800,000 Freehold. A five bedroom family home, located on the edge of Blackheath Village. A house of such prominence on the heath, is a rare find and provides a wonderful opportunity. Built

Fact Blackheath was so called because it appeared a darker colour than the green fields beside the Thames - the soil was dark and so were the plants!

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Laura Knight-Smith Sales Manager at KFH, Chislehurst Photography: rebecca noonan
I
think I was destined to be in property; from the moment a friend said to me “I think you'd make a great estate agent” my fate was sealed. We were sitting in a restaurant in Gloucester Road and I had a very successful 9 year career in the hotel industry, but with those words I resigned the following week with my sights firmly set on a career in property. I was also determined to join KFH, as a friend in recruitment had told me they were the best. Following both sets of advice was the best decision I’ve ever made, and 11 years later, I'm still here and loving it more than ever. I joined as a lettings negotiator in 2003, working in the Bromley and Chislehurst area, shortly thereafter moving to West Wickham in a sales role. In 2010, I was asked to open a new office in East Dulwich, which gave me a great taste of the London market and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Soon, however, I missed being closer to home and the Kent market really is what I know and love so I moved back to manage the Chislehurst branch and have been here since November 2011. Chislehurst has always been an area I’ve wanted to work in as its quite different to its counterparts in atmosphere, demographic and housing. Its green, open spaces, duck ponds, landmarks and history make it an exceptionally interesting place

to work and live and this is the reason why so many choose to live here. There tends to be a real mixture of people living here, from young couples migrating out of London to buy bigger homes who appreciate the good transport links, the young families that are here for the excellent state and private schools, and also a large number of long standing residents who have lived here for many years and have every intention of staying for the long term. Across the market, buyers love the potential and diversity of the properties found in Chislehurst, which tend to be large period family homes. Along the Commons, you can find beautiful Georgian homes, mixed with pretty terraces and Victorian cottages. The area also has a range of Arts and Crafts houses along with modern houses and flats, and a host of development and investor opportunities too. So there really is something for everyone. Hugely sought after are the Arts and Crafts properties and those on substantial plots which are tucked away on Bickley Park and private roads. Many of these feature large gardens, affording a sense of space and seclusion, yet are just a few minutes’ walk to the station, offering a 21 minute commute into London Bridge. In general, a two bedroom flat here will cost around £350,000 to £400,000 while for a large family house, you can expect to pay upwards of £850,000. 020 8285 9900; kfh.co.uk

Langford Russell help Sundridge Park Golf Club to raise funds for new Sunshine Coach
D
olly Hill, Sundridge Park Golf Club’s oldest female member at 102, handed over the keys of a brand new, fully equipped Sunshine Coach to Marjorie McClure specialist school in Chislehurst in September. The coach is the result of the fundraising efforts of Tony Negal, Captain of Sundridge Park Golf Club, with support from Langford Russell, the main sponsors of a Celebrity Golf Charity Event and sizeable contributors to the fundraising. Through the generosity and support of the entire Sundridge Park membership, Tony was able to far surpass the monies needed by Variety Club to supply the coach. The Honourable Mayor of Bromley Councillor Julian Benington, Member of Parliament for Bromley & Chislehurst Bob Neil, CEO of Langford Russell Robert Sargent, Tony himself, and a number of celebrities and other supporters were ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

present at the handing over ceremony. ‘My heartfelt thanks go to the membership at Sundridge Park Golf Club for their fantastic help and support in fundraising this year,’ said Sundridge Park Captain Tony Negal, ‘it has been truly humbling. A special note must go to Langford Russell for the special support they have given.’ Following the presentation, 120 players in teams of four, made up of celebrities and club members tested their skills over 18 holes on the east golf course; one of two beautiful championship courses at Sundridge Park in Bromley. The golf was followed by a formal dinner and charity auction, giving everyone another chance to put their hands in their pockets to raise further funds for Variety Club. Hosting the charity auction and entertaining the players and guests were international comedians Adger Brown and Ian Irving, both members of the Variety Club golfing society and career-long supporters of the charity. ‘We are delighted that our support and sponsorship has gone some way in assisting in the purchase of this Sunshine Coach for the Marjorie McClure Specialist School,’ said Robert Sargent,
Sponsor and CEO of Langford Russell. ‘The credit though must go to Tony Negal and the entire membership of Sundridge Park Golf Club who have worked together to make this possible.’ Langford Russell has offices in Beckenham, Bromley, Chislehurst, Locksbottom, Orpington and West Wickham.
