Editor’s LETTER

M

ay in west London is all about flowers. The first whiff of Chelsea's annual Flower Show brings with it a host of flower-themed tribute acts. There are floral menus at restaurants all over the Royal Borough, floral fashions and homewares in every window display and actual flowers woven into every available opportunity. And flowers, of course, are an integral part of every wedding too, so this issue is very much geared towards all things wedding as well as all things floral. We focus on wedding fashions and wedding venues as well as Chelsea's wedding quarter, so if you're thinking of tying the knot, take a look. And if you're not, you might be interested in our features on Aaron Kasmin's fascinating matchbox drawings, fashion brand Talitha's expansion into homewares and an unlikely ode to that most unglamorous of footwear staples, the wellie. Either way, we hope you enjoy the magazine. â—†

aron Kasmin – son of John Kasmin, famously David Hockney’s gallerist – is a collector. The Kilburn-based artist collects matchbooks, specifically those from the Lion Match Company, decorated with lively and inventive images that reflect the rise of America’s consumer culture. In its heyday, the humble matchbook was the most effective advertising medium in America, embraced by almost every industry. Kasmin's collection of matchbooks has spawned another collection, his set of pencil drawings that give such little-known ephemera the attention it deserves, while paying homage to the original artists who remain unknown. Kasmin focuses on details of single matchbooks from the late 1920s to the early 1960s, staying true to their graphics and depicting a more expansive range of themes. Ranging from fashion and yachting to restaurants and nightclubs, this is a nostalgic glimpse into a bygone era, when the promotion of alcohol

was lenient and smoking was chic. In conjunction with the drawings, a selection of the artist’s vintage matchbook collection is also on display. Up in Smoke celebrates a slice of Americana, transporting viewers into worlds created by the authors, poets and singers of the time. Kasmin says: “These new works reflect a joint celebration of the joy of collecting and creating works inspired by the sheer inventiveness and genius of feature matchbooks. The matchbooks are small, ephemeral and almost forgotten; the ingenuity of the imagery in what must be the golden age of graphic design is here in minute form. To me they conjure up the glamour of early to mid-20th century American life. The glitz inherent in nightclubs and bars harks back to the post-prohibition era with movie stars and opulent parties evoked and captured in the novels of Scott Fitzgerald and Raymond Chandler, and recreated in the nostalgic films of Woody Allen.” u

MAKE AN IMPACT

Enzina Fuschini introduces her new exhibition at 508 Art Gallery What was your main source of inspiration for Impact? The inspiration for IMPACT was born from the inner desire to understand and to express the turmoil of various impacts and circumstances that we have to face day by day. This is a reality that cannot be denied. We have no choice other than just to embrace these events and the changes that engulf us, whether we like it or not. I wanted to stimulate our thinking about the revolving continuous changes that take place around and within us when we are faced with impacts. What are you hoping viewers will take away from it? I am hoping that this won't become the one-way conversation that usually takes place with art on canvas. In most cases the artist expresses something and the viewers are not really sure of what is all about, but life goes on. At the contrary my heart's desire is to engage with the viewers in presenting this new series of paintings to challenge our conscience and intellect – so what is the answer, and what we are going to do about it? Impacts are personal, ethical and social ... we are all involved and responsible for it, in any case like

And can you FEEL that you EXIST? happy Impact or sad , devastating or constructive we need to deal with it in valuing its own consequences and effects. So, are we going to deny those realities pretending has if nothing is happening or should we allow our hearts and minds to consider transformation, character building and endurance ? Can we even desire redemption and reconciliation? The essence of it could be triumphant and encouraging , even exiting for a greater hope and desire to transform humanity . My question to you is... what it is your answer ? Are you willing to be part of it ? And can you feel that you exist? . Do you have a favourite piece in the exhibition? I believe that my favorite piece in to the exhibition it is the artwork yet to finish. It will be my last painting of this series. I am the spectator like you. What sort of things do you do to prepare for an exhibition and how do

25 NH_May17_ADV Enzina Fuschini Interview.indd 25

you like to work? I only work and work in creating my new paintings. This is the first thing to taking place when I feel that it's time to deliver and show my creative message to the world. The exhibition starts with me in painting, then it takes more shape and focus. I only like to think and paint. The rest of the work I delegate to others, however I always make sure that I am in control of the situation, especially in not missing the details. Is there a creative medium you’d like to pursue but haven’t? I would like to explore sculpture in the future, but I have a true passion for fine art. What art movement or artist would you say influences your work most? The Master of Mataficica Giorgio De Chirico and the Surrealist group from Miro to Max Ernst and Russian artists have always inspired my spirit. 508 KING'S ROAD ART GALLERY 508 King's Road, SW10 508kingsroad.com

BRAND PROFILE:

HILLIER BARTLEY The design duo bringing ageless eclecticism to the style stage WHO

Theirs is a very fashionable love story. Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley’s friendship stretches back to 1999, when they worked together on Luella’s eponymous start-up label. Fast forward 14 years and the design duo took New York, securing prestigious roles at Marc by Marc Jacobs: creative director and womenswear design director, respectively. Their accessible yet adventurous designs sent the FROW into paroxysms of delight. When the brand closed in 2015 Hillier and Bartley announced the launch of their own luxury brand: Hillier Bartley, and later that year they debuted their first collection. Two years later - in January 2017 - the label was awarded the acolade of ‘Brand of Tomorrow 2017’ by Walpole. u

WHAT

With Hillier on accessories and Bartley on read-to-wear, the brand fuses the eccentricity of English aristocracy with the eclectic edginess of London style. Bartley describes the Hillier Bartley woman as “an indie by heart, rakish and irreverent by nature, who is maturing into refinement and naturalness.” The result is an individual, and unusually, non age-specific aesthetic. For SS17 the brand has embraced silk dressing gowns, feather trims and a juxtaposition of high shine fabrics with crisp tailoring. 1970s bohemia meets 1980s power-dressing. It’s statement-making style for the Kate Moss generation. The it-girl has grown-up (ish). hillierbartley.com

Sole Love

A pair of Dubarry boots can set hearts a-flutter, as Absolutely discovers Wo r d s J a s m i n e R o b e r t s o n

I

t’s probably a bit weird to fetishise a pair of welly boots but I have since I first clapped eyes on them. I remember it well, they were attached to the strapping legs of a chiselled young man. An invitingly rich brown, sexily slouched and artfully slung, and that was just the wellies. They were Dubarrys of course, an intoxicating confection of leather, Gore Tex and – phwoar!! - rubber and I’ve wanted a pair ever since. On discovering that they are ludicrously expensive, upwards of £300, dear reader, just made them all the more desirable. Of course, at this price, Dubarry boots are not proper country. Maybe the chatelaine of Downton might take them for a stroll, but no one mucking out horses or shovelling cow dung is going to do it in £300 wellies. No, these are for folk like you and me who want to play ‘down on the farm’ while doing the organic shop at Daylesford or jiving in the mud at Wilderness. That’s not to say they are not up to the job. I took delivery of my new Galway boots in the depths of icy winter. They

arrived cossetted in tissue paper from which I cruelly tore them to set out into the frozen wastes of Oxfordshire. The weekend of their test run was the coldest of the year. The ground was bone hard, ice was thick on puddles and inches deep in animal troughs. My children, with feet in thin rubber soles, started to complain about cold toes. My feet, on a much thicker rubber sole and higher off the sub-zero ground, were warm and toasty. There is much said about the expertise

39 NH_May17_DUBARRY indd.indd 39

and Irish know-how that goes into making Dubarrys but I can attest to the truth of one of their boasts about the boots’ soles. Specifically developed by Dubarry, the sole is directly moulded to the upper to create one piece, with no gluing or stitching, giving a perfect seal to keep out water. I put this to the test, wading into an icy stream to assist two five-year olds who had gone in over their wellies. As I waded in, my friend claimed that she could actually see the water being repelled by that superior leather. Thanks to the moulding, my feet were bone dry. Used to Hunter wellies that spring holes within months of wearing them, this was a joy for my tootsies to experience. Actually Durbarrys are really nothing like wellies. That’s their USP really. They are a leather country boot. I hate walking in wellies, tiring for legs and feet but I have now walked miles in my Dubarrys and they remain very comfortable. For those flat of feet like me, however, a note of caution: the Dubarry sole isn’t very supportive. I slipped my orthotics in and was quite happy, but it is worth considering when buying. I do think Dubarrys should be reclaimed by proper country folk. They are an absolute investment piece. With some TLC and lots of leathery love, I expect mine to last for years. Of course, my obsession has not been sated. I now want the Wexfords, a more shaped, feminine pair than the Galways. I’ve come over a bit Cathy and Heathcliff and want to team them with swirly skirts and mysterious moors. Whoever knew wellies could be so goddamn sexy? u dubarryboots.com

he trouble with facials is that they usually do wonders just for the face. The rest of your body can feel neglected. Thankfully a new treatment at the spa in Knightsbridge's Jumeirah Carlton Tower is a lot more holistic. Intended to help combat ageing, it uses clinicallyproven technology to give skin a youthful glow. But it is so relaxing that it also replenishes your energy levels, meaning that as soon as my treatment is over I feel that years have simply dropped off me. I turn up at the spa mid-afternoon, grubby from a day of work and I am told - gently - to get into a fluffy white dressing gown. My treatment; the Timeless Prodigy facial, lasts 90 minutes and the first half consists of a hand and foot massage, inspired by Shiatsu. Maria's technique is extraordinary - I can feel knots in my feet untying after months of tightness. I am relaxing at last. Finally Maria reaches my face and neck. The treatment uses products from the Spanish brand Skeyndor, which has over 50 years' experience; the creams and serums smell wonderful. When my skin has been lathered in a mesh mask to stimulate collagen, I sense a bit of stinging - but it feels good, as if the facial is working. I don't bother reapplying my makeup after the treatment. At dinner, an hour or two later, my friends are shocked by how soft my skin is and keep brushing my cheeks with their fingertips, bemused. As facials come, this one is rather pricey - but as a treat, I can't recommend it enough. ◆ P E A K H E A LT H C LU B & S PA Jumirah Carlton Tower, Knightsbridge SW1 peakhealthclub.com

HEAT PROTECT YOUR HAIR

CAN PREGNANT WOMEN COLOUR THEIR HAIR?

Today good hair starts with health, so every great hair day starts with protection from heat styling and sun. When using tongs, dryers and straighteners apply L'Oreal Elnett Heat Protect Styling Spray Straight Satin to care for cuticles. When in the sun, use Kérastase Soleil Micro-Voile Protecteur to guard against colour fade and follicle thinning.

‘There’s no evidence of any risk of having hair coloured during pregnancy, but I always recommend a patch test first, while looking out for ammoniafree and organic dye. Hair colour is so much safer than it was 20 years ago, but because skin can become sensitised during pregnancy, it pays to be cautious,’ advises colour director Salvadore. “ HAI R CO LO U R I S SO MUCH SAFER T H A N I T WA S 2 0 Y E A R S AG O ”

eru is the contemporary Levantine restaurant bringing flavours of the eastern Mediterranean coast to South Kensington. London. Inside, it's a clever fusion of 2017 cool - copper and blonde wood - with the restaurant's heritage through colourful woven fabrics and geometric print glass panels. Even the toilets are stunning (trust us on this one) with their carved wooden doors and Instagram-worthy Middle Eastern tiles. Using authentic ingredients and cooking methods, Ceru offers a range of

small (and not so small) sharing dishes, catering for everyone, from vegetarians and vegans to gluten-free devotees. We start with a selection from the ‘dips and salads’ category: humous, fadi (roasted courgette, yoghurt, lemon and tahini) and spiced warm cauliflower and walnut salad - all served with Greek pita bread. Fresh yet flavoursome, the starters pack a punch. The cauliflower salad is intersected with tangy bursts of flavour from pomegranate seeds and mint. Next there's a spread of fish, meat and veggie dishes. Fillet of sea bream is light and sharp with warm lemon dressing and capers, while the smokiness of shish

taouk (paprika and lemon marinated grilled chicken breast) transports us to sun-drenched barbecues of summers past. We opt for two side orders of pumpkin and fried rice, which are subtly spiced, allowing the mains to shine. Roasted aubergine with chermoula is a highlight - delectably smokey and spicy with herb yoghurt and lohz. Lamb shoulder, however, comes up trumps as dish of the day. Slow-roasted for five hours in a blend of 12 shawarma spices, it is served with a pomegranate, fresh mint and pistachio sauce, the tender meat falling off the bone to bathe in a sweet and sour sauce which offsets the fattiness of the lamb with perfection. We finish our meal with the unusual sounding 'flavours of baklava', which comprises of cardamom ice cream with a nut brittle and burnt honey caramel. Through a clever balance of flavours, the dish really does taste like deconstructed baklava. Despite not being cardamom lovers, we can't get enough of the ice cream with was delicately flavoured, with the brittle offering a satisfying contrasting crunch. A perfectly floral finish to a show-stopping meal. ◆ CERU

Outside In

The Sound of Spring

It’s not often we Brits get to see the sun so when it’s out we certainly make the most of it. However, when the weather doesn’t deliver, it’s easy to create an al fresco dining experience inside. Using moss and oasis as your base, add spring flowers and grasses to create a flowerbed that will appear literally to be growing from your dining table.

Spring is not only a floral feast for the eyes, it brings with it nature’s prettiest harmonies. We recently created a botanical bar that had bird song resonating from within its living wall.

Al Fresco

Make the most of the sun when it shines with an outdoor party or picnic. The simplicity of baskets overflowing with wild fruit and flowers, galvanized troughs with an abundance of your favorite tipple, friends, music and a sunny spot is all that is required.

Feeling Blush

Spring air and sunshine are the perfect set-up for a chilled glass of Rosé. Delicious Château Léoube flows freely at our annual Goffs Horse Auction in Kensington Palace, making it the event of the season.

SPRING FLING

o-founders of fashion brand Talitha Kim Hersov and Shon Randhawa have opened a new shop that extends their brand into homewwares. Working collaboratively with friend and interior designer Hubert Zandberg, they have created an innovative lifestyle experience. Designed to resemble a bedroom and living room, the space is intended as a haven for friends and clients alike.

A considered curation of lifestyle and homeware items – all available for sale – fill the space, complementing the world and wardrobe of the Talitha woman. Likeminded brands including family-owned heritage textiles company Tibor and charitable craft project Madwa can be found within the space, which will continue to evolve each season to consistently offer a new experience. On exploring an alternative approach to retail, co-founder Kim Hersov said: “We were lucky enough to work with our great friend Hubert to create a space that would allow our client to understand our

MOVER & SHAKER Absolutely quizzes the founder of Connaught Kitchens, Phillip Ozorio, about his recent shift from German to British kitchens

ABSOLUTELY: After 25 years of selling German kitchens, you’re now offering British ones. Why the change? PHILLIP OZORIO: We are known for supplying modular German kitchens, specifically Leicht kitchens, which have become more widespread over the last few years. We wanted to find another manufacturer that wouldn’t compete with our existing offering – and noticing a return to valuing British craft and classic skills, we found Stoneham, a family business in Kent that’s 164 years old. We’re now the only central London dealer for Stoneham, and while some of their designs may look a bit countrified to the urban eye, we’re offering their more contemporary looks. ABS: How are the British kitchens different? PO: Handle-free modular German kitchens

a focus on painted blues and greys – our show kitchen is painted a bespoke dark blue that we call Connaught Blue. We’re seeing a return to British craft as a widespread trend now, including weavers, potters and other artisans and people are happy to pay a premium. It’s like buying organic vegetables. These British kitchens are almost twice the price of the German ones we sell but there’s a big market for them.

supply those alongside the new British bespoke ones. Range cookers are new to us and we are specializing in French brand Lacanche which is made to order.

ABS: What’s the next big thing in the kitchen world?

PO: We’re very excited about Dekton worktops. It’s a new ceramic-based material that’s totally heat resistant. Our show kitchen has a Dekton worktop with a printed marble effect pattern and seamless matching cladding on the walls right up to the ceiling. Nothing can stain Dekton – not vindaloo, not permanent marker, not even a hot pan.

ABS: What makes Connaught Kitchens such a successful business?

PO: We run our own project management and full fit installation – our specialized teams will deal with everything from plumbing and heating to lighting. We employ two designers on each project to make sure that every detail is exactly right. We also provide an ongoing service to past clients – who often become repeat clients and provide us with recommendations. u

Worktops can be Danish wood, steel, granite or Corian. The best-seller is still quartz but we think ceramic will overtake it within the next five years.

ABS: What are biggest current kitchen trends?

PO: Colours. All the Farrow and Ball shades are very popular – particularly greys and blues. Also contrasting internal finishes are very popular. The combination of a classic look with a high tech specification is very much the new thing, though developers are still choosing white high gloss German modular kitchens, which we continue to

in place of a separate wine room. You can also create zones within an existing kitchen or dining room. One way to successfully create a wine room zone is to use glass partitioning walls to section off an area, allowing the space to feel autonomous while also integrating into the surrounding areas. This is a wonderful way to create a feature display of your prized collection which also serves as an alluring invitation to guests when entertaining. The striking McCarron & Co wine room in the picture below left uses bespoke timber framing with inset glass panels to create a zoned off area with an industrial-like feel. Clever feature lighting draws the eye to the display and a set of oak drawers with a slate worktop is a practical use of the space. This room has storage for up to 86 bottles in three independent temperature zones.

nce dark, damp and uninviting spaces refined to cellars and basements, wine rooms are now fast becoming an integral feature area of the home and a welcome space for entertaining guests. McCarron & Co has seen a sharp rise in demand for wine rooms over the last 12 months and as bespoke designers they love the challenge of combining design aesthetics with practical and functional requirements. When considering incorporating a wine room to your design, firstly think about how much space you are willing to invest. If you are limited on floor space, perhaps think about a wine conditioning unit which can sit within a feature furniture piece with built-in storage for wine glasses. The Art Deco-inspired piece pictured on the far right houses a wine unit with a feature surround of metal stringing inset into a Macassar Ebony frame. This elegant drinks cabinet was designed to create a feature area within a games room and offers a perfect solution

Wine rooms are FAST becoming INTEGRAL feature areas If you are wanting to create a more traditional wine cellar for your collection, and have suitable storage space, then a custom-made wine racking system is a perfect solution for making the most of every inch of space. In the Somerset-project shown in the main image, McCarron & Co designed and built an impressive wine cellar pairing oak wine racking with a raw-edge limestone worktop. Cleverly designed lighting highlights the curved ceiling and uplighters in the floor mean that the space can be kept light and airy, a welcoming space in which to sample some of the finest vintages. mccarronandco.com

ONE for ALL

When 700 guests celebrate Ravenscourt Park Prep’s 25th birthday it will be a family affair Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

W

hen Julia Shipman steps through the darkened doors of St Paul’s Hammersmith this month, it will be quite a moment in her personal history, as well as that of Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School.

Shipman attended the school as a child along with three other siblings. She then returned as an adult to teach in the successful family-run Gardener Schools Group (GSG). This month she will join other alumni, the odd celebrity and all the current pupils when 700 guests celebrate RPPS’s 25th anniversary at a special evening concert at the church. Ravenscourt Prep, right next to the park itself in Hammersmith, is now a well-established, much sought-after school educating boys and girls aged four to 11. 300 pupils register for 60 places every year (be sure to do it by your child’s first birthday). But when Maria and Edward Gardener identified the need for a co-educational, nonselective independent preparatory school in west London in 1991, they didn’t know how their dream of a caring, family-centred prep would be received. “We had no idea of the impact the new

It was HARD WORK but it also had its FUN TIMES

school would have,” says Maria Gardener. The school opened in an abandoned drama and dance school in a building dating from 1848 that had no windows, electricity or floors, yet “parents came in hordes to ask for a place”, she says. She recounts how she met a prospective father in the building site playground in the summer of 1991. Surrounded by dust and chaos, he told Gardener he wanted all his three children to start in September. He then handed her £10,000 in a Tesco carrier bag. When a rather perturbed Gardener said, “But you don’t even know me!” He said: “I’ve met you, I like you and I want my children to come to you.” This is just one of her many tales of “the hunger” for such a prep school at the time. Gardener’s stories of getting the school off the ground already sound like the stuff of legend. There were surprisingly few regulations at the time and it was all hands on deck. “We all mucked in,” says Gardener. “It was really hard work but it also had its fun times,” she says. Teachers cleaned loos, cooked school lunches and even swept the playground.

81 Chis_May17_Education_v2.indd 81

With a background in state education, Gardener wanted to “combine best practice for both sectors” at RPPS. This included a mixed ability intake, not interviewing children at three years old and employing teachers who had already done at least two years in the state sector. There has always been a very strong emphasis on openness and honesty with pupils and parents and a timetable rich in the creative arts and “every sport you can think of”, she says. There’s no doubt that the Gardeners hit on a successful formula for a happy school. Continuing demand for their brand of family-centred education led the Gardeners to open another prep for 4-11 year-olds, Kew Green, in 2004 and then in response to the demand created by both schools, GSG opened Kew House School, a co-ed senior school for 11-18 year olds in September 2013. Things have changed greatly at RPPS since 1991. 43 students started in 1991 in the old dance school; 414 pupils are currently on role in what is now a state-of-the-art building which opened five years ago. Aspects of the school are distinctly starry – speakers at Book Week have included Harold Pinter, Flora Fraser, Ben Okri, Michael Gambon and Dominic West, and children move on to the usual slew of top London senior schools, although the majority now go to Kew House. But GSG is still a family company,

run by Maria Gardener, her son Theo and the board of directors. And its feet remain firmly on the ground. Most families are local and the school still has a “lovely community feel”, says one parent. 'It's very down-to- earth,' says a mother. 'Very normal – for London.' ◆ rpps.co.uk

n a trip to the Highlands, you might expect to see a fat grouse flying out of the heather, some shaggy horned cattle grazing gently and perhaps the odd stag standing atop a hill. You’re less likely to see a zebra. Not so at The Highlands in Tanzania. Named for its Scottish counterpart, Asilia’s camp is perched on the slopes of the Olmoti volcano, high above the famous Ngorongoro Crater and offers a completely unique way to experience safari. The camp itself takes some getting to. After an eight-hour flight to Nairobi, an hour to Kilimanjaro and then a short trip in a small aircraft, we arrive at a tiny airport in Lake Manyara, met by our guides who introduce themselves as Baraka and Lenga, both of them dressed in full Maasai regalia of vivid reds and blues. We pile into an enormous 4X4, somewhat beleaguered by our journey and start along the road to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area not knowing that this is the last time we will

experience anything resembling our idea of a road. Soon the terrain begins to become rougher and the ride significantly less smooth. As I attempt to drink from a glass bottle, I almost take out a tooth going over a pothole. Lenga looks in the rearview mirror with a grin and asks, ‘Do you know what we call this?’ I shake my head. ‘An African massage.’ Our guides take us for a hike before we head to the camp and we are joined by a ranger, who leads us up the steep incline of the Olmoti volcano. For a long time, there is not much to see other than the ground rising before us and for an inexperienced hiker, the going is a little tough due to the heavy dust kicked up by our boots and the afternoon sun beating down. I do learn my first bit of Swahili though, as the ranger catches me almost tripping. ‘Polepole!’ she cries, which I learn to my great amusement means ‘Slowly, slowly!’ As soon as we reach the top, the walk is worth it. The landscape sprawls below us, undulating hills and vast plains carved up by a river glistening in the sunshine. Spying two Maasai children driving a

There, in the distance, IS A

with her calf

herd of rail-thin cattle through the water creates one of those moments when the untalented wish they could paint – instead I snap pictures on my iPhone. We arrive at camp dusty and exhausted – though ‘camp’ does the set-up a disservice. Futuristic-looking domes constructed from taut canvas and rigid exoskeletons dot the area connected by paths and wooden gangways. They are exquisitely decorated with stylish wooden furniture, furry throws and accents of tartan as a nod to The Highlands’ namesake. Our dome features two double beds facing a clear window looking out on the stunning scenery, meaning that we wake up to an unrivalled sunrise every day. Staff are all African and the camp is designed to leave a minimal ecological footprint; it balances a feeling of being in the wild with exceptional comfort, offering peace rather than quiet with the sounds of the hectic bush all around. The obvious draw of Ngorongoro is safari. We set out stocked with snacks and drinks; the drive to the crater itself takes an hour or so. On our way we spot zebras and birds including the amusingly coiffed kori bustard before descending into the crater. The ambition of most safari goers is to spot the Big Five – the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard and rhinoceros – all of which can be found here. Those

hoping for giraffes will be disappointed, but we happily cross off three of the five almost immediately, spotting the enormous buffalo, an elephant and, most unusually, a pride of lions feasting on the carcass of a hippo. Baraka and Lenga explain that the hippo must have been old and dying, otherwise lions would never risk attacking it. As we sit and watch, jackals circle the male lion guarding his prey, coming too close every so often and getting a roar of disapproval and a swipe of his claw. The most magical part of the day comes when Baraka and Lenga drive us to a secluded spot and lead us to a beautiful picnic set up under the trees complete with wine and and buffet. We eat looking out at the buffalo in front of us. As our day in the crater draws to a close, we lament having not seen a rhino until Lenga suddenly slams on the brakes and points. We scrabble for our binoculars and there, in the distance is a mother rhino with her calf, plain as can be. Four out of five ain’t bad.

87 B&C_May17_ TANZANIA.V2.indd 87

At the end of our stay, we pack our bags with regret. Asilia has achieved something remarkable up there on the slopes of that volcano, combining genuinely wonderful people with untouched surroundings and high quality facilities that, when added together, really do equal a once in a lifetime experience. ◆

Catherine Hales was a guest of Kenya Airways (kenya-airways.com) and The Highlands (asiliaafrica. com). Kenya Airways fly from London Heathrow to Kilimanjaro via Nairobi, from £777 return; Coastal Aviation (coastal.co.tz) has connections to Lake Manyara from £130. The Highlands costs £700 per person per night including full-board with drinks and activities; low-season rates drop to £330. Ngorongoro Conservation Area fees are £54 per person for 24 hours and the crater descent fee is £227 per vehicle.

ormerly the home of Lord Beaverbrook, owner of the Daily Express, Beaverbrook House has a visitor’s book that reads like a Who’s Who of the 20th century. It was a place for entertaining, and Winston Churchill was a regular guest. The beautiful building is surrounded by spectacular landscaped grounds, complete with a folly, and a vast new spa is set to open this summer when the main hotel is unveiled. Just 19 miles from Piccadilly Circus, this is as close to home as a country weekend gets. F

FOR FAMILIES

ot many hotels can offer up Sharky and George to entertain their guests’ children, but Beaverbrook has an entire hidden encampment in the woods headed up by the duo behind all the kids parties that count. At 10am on a drizzly Sunday morning our children are greeted by two enthusiastic faces, instructed to don raincoats and wellies, and whisked away to the treehouse, returning fed and happy several hours later. Which gives parents the ultimate luxury: several hours of quiet and the Sunday papers. Genius. N

Surrounded by chic shops and wonderful little bistros, this small hotel feels like a hidden gem after a long day of shopping and culture. ombining luxury and literature Les Pavillion Des Lettres pays homage to French authors and considered interior design. All of the bedrooms are unique, with their own character and individual touches. Following the alphabet, each of the 26 rooms are named after a prominent writer. We were in Calderon and a copy of La Vie est un Songe sat nestled in our room next to the Molton Brown toiletries. Seven Dials apartment once owned by Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart is for sale. The three-storey, three-bedroom penthouse which features two rooftop terraces belonged to the ‘Sweet Dreams Are Made of This’ songwriter during the late 1990s and early noughties, and was visited by dozens of famous names. These included George Harrison, David Bowie, Joe Strummer, Lou Reed, Damon Albarn, Sinead O’Connor, Gwen Stefani, Tracy Emin and Robin Williams. The reason so many stars visited the flat is due to Stewart becoming a prolific hit maker for other artists after the band split, recording songs in his home studio, which is now the second reception room. The flat, which is within Fielding Court near Covent Garden, is for sale at £3.85 million through agent Tavistock Bow (020 7477 2177).

hatcher was known as the Iron Lady for her uncompromising political stances and steeliness, but she had a softer side. In her early political years when she was a freshfaced MP, this sixth-floor, two bedroom apartment in London’s Chelsea was her home where, at one point, she was pictured papering its walls. The flat is within an Art Deco apartment block off the King’s Road called Swan Court, where she lived at

the time with her husband Denis and twins Carol and Mark. Swan Court was built during the 1930s and was originally meant for bachelors, although the flats eventually appealed to a much wider audience including young families such as the Thatchers. The wallpaper has long gone, and agent Edward Thomson of Strutt & Parker (07917 067469) says the property now needs a complete refurbishment. It’s on the market for £1.235 million but has a very short lease, which could cost approximately £600,000 to extend.

f you fancy moving to more bucolic surroundings and you’re a movie buff, then a new development being built in Denham should be idea. Denham Film Studios was at the centre of the UK’s film industry for nearly two decades until its stages closed in 1952. It’s where many famous films were shot including A Matter of Life and Death, Great Expectations and Brief Encounter. But Denham’s film connections are now being revived. The site has been bought by developer Weston Homes and is having £120m spent on it to create hundreds of new homes. As well as new-build apartments and townhouses it includes homes built within the old film studios’ Grade II listed Art Deco headquarters and laboratories. Other retained features of the site include its cinema, where

“The property has 4,000 sq ft of space, four bedrooms, three reception rooms, a roof terrace, and a steam spa” movies were first screened to directors, and a famous cocktail bar. The development provides 224 converted and newly built homes including 154 one, two and three bedroom apartments and 70 four and five bedroom family townhouses. Why the Great British Bake-off Finalist Jane Beadle kneads to move

J

ane Beedle enjoyed ten weeks of national fame when she made it to the final of last year’s The Great British Bake Off, the last one before the programme transfers to Channel 4. The 61-year old mother of three says her life hasn’t changed since baking famed beckoned and that she’s been busy back at her garden design business that she runs with her best friend, although she’s also been doing some TV work from her home kitchen for

both the Good Morning Britain and Lorraine TV shows. “The big different I noticed in my life is that suddenly everyone wants to talk to you,” she says, which most recently included launching the new Beckenham Market. Her bake off journey started when her business partner Harriet kept on hounding her to apply to be on the show, and on the third attempt, she was accepted. Jane says she remembers two of the episodes the best, but for different reasons. She says her

mini mouse cakes made for the showstopper section of week seven were her proudest moment. “I pity the poor people who had to clean my bench area after that; I have never seen so much mess in all my life,” she says. But the next week disaster struck when her three-tiered floral cake went wrong and, at the time, left her “fed up and miserable; it was my worst week on the show,” she says. What a lot of the programme’s fans won’t know is that contestants have a week to practice each of their bakes at home before filming, and Jane used her kitchen in her home in Beckenham as her practice area. “Lord knows how much icing sugar is hiding behind the units left over from that time,” she says. The next owners of the house will soon find out. Jane says that now their children have left home, she and her husband want to sell their home and move to a more rural and slower-paced area. They bought the property pretty much as a wreck. It had belonged to the local Conservative Party and served as their clubhouse and constituency office for over fifty

PROPERTY / INTERVIEW

“At one point I saw my six-footfive-inch tall son trying to wash his feet in one of the tiny loo washbasins, which was entertaining. “We put in a new kitchen, but it wasn't a really posh catering one because we always knew we’d be selling up this year and anyway there was such a lot to do here. “I put in a kitchen that works rather than a really expensive one my kids have always loved sitting at the breakfast bar and chatting while I cook.” Jane says they always intended the property to be their final push to create a pension pot and that being on TV didn’t deflect them from their plans, which is why they are selling up now. “My husband wants to work much less, and I want to concentrate on my baking more and do less gardening, so now we can move to somewhere more rural,” she says. u

“My kids have always loved sitting at the breakfast bar and chatting while I cook”

years before Jane bought it, so the first thing she had to do was convert back into a home. “They had divided the building into two sets of offices and knocked two bedrooms to make a meeting room. When we moved in it still had pictures of all the former Tory leaders hanging on the wall,” she says. “There was no kitchen to speak of, no bathrooms – just loads of men’s and women’s urinals – and we lived in a small back room and cooked using an electric frying pan and a kettle during the six months that the work took to complete.

The Lettings Manager at Harrods Estates Kensington discusses his path to property and the ever changing nature of the London market Photography by R E B E C C A N O O NA N

"

"hen I grow up I want to work in property” – well that’s one sentence I can honestly say never came out of my mouth when I was a kid mulling over career options. Of course, once I got into the industry, I knew it was the right path for me, but when I was growing up in Hampshire, the London property market was probably one of the furthest thing from my mind. Most of the people I knew worked in the great outdoors, taking on roles in landscaping, farming and forestry, so assuming I wanted to do the same, I went to college and worked towards gaining the necessary qualifications to go into forestry. However, after following this path for a few years, I eventually realised that I wanted to be in London, and made the big move to the capital. I initially spent some time running a hotel in Paddington with a friend of mine, and then, when his family who owned a number of properties needed some help with their lettings office, what started as me just helping out soon led to a full-time job. Now, after over a decade in the industry, working at Harrods Estates, dealing with

some of central London’s high-end properties is exactly where I want to be. Other than getting to work with luxury properties, I would say that the best thing about my job (and I know this sounds like such a cliché, but it really is true!) is the people that I get to work with daily, both clients and colleagues. They do make things all the more interesting. London property has always been very fast moving and is constantly changing, which means it has always been a great industry to work in. I've found in recent years that the real game-changer for the luxury market in London is the various new high-end developments that are regularly springing up all over Central and West London. Developers have an entirely new way of thinking with these properties, and are bringing a whole different type of luxury and quality to the table, which is making the market even more fascinating and exciting. It is an interesting time to be working on the front lines of the luxury property industry. While I’ve enjoyed spending the best part of the last 15 years working in a role and field that I really love, I do think it’s hugely important to spend time indulging your outside of work passions. Travelling and hitting the slopes are two of my passions

“DEALING WITH SOME OF CENTRAL LONDON’S HIGHEND PROPERTIES IS EXACTLY WHERE I WANT TO BE" and I was lucky enough to have the chance to indulge both, when I spent some time working and fine-tuning my snowboarding skills on the world-famous ski slopes of Breckenridge, Colorado. My number one travel destination has to be Cuba, because it has just about everything. In one place, you get amazing architecture, stunning mountains, great music, classic cars, rum, and cigars, all on an island in the middle of the beautiful Caribbean seas. I do of course also enjoy some slightly quieter hobbies, and love playing football, and spending time with the family. u

PROPERTY / FEATURE Chamonix’s off-piste property appeal by N I G E L L E W I S

Nigel Lewis visits the famously gnarly Alpine resort to see what you can buy.

T

he day I visited Chamonix the skiing conditions did not look good. The snow was mostly cannon-created, thin and there were rumours in the nearby Three Valleys of resorts being partially closed as water reserves ran low. Then the next day the clouds gathered, darkened and dumped. Chamonix’s pistes were transformed into a powdery heaven and for a time the volume of snow – ironically – closed one of its ski stations. Such conditions, in which my skis disappeared into huge drifts even on the main pistes, are manna from heaven for Chamonix. It’s where serious skiers go to test their skills and, rather than being a ski resort, it’s more a winter sports wonderland and the town describes itself as the best ‘freeride resort’ in the world. Walk down Chamonix’s high street on a late January afternoon and you’ll see who the resort tends to attract; weathered Nordic types clutching long, fat skis and plenty of technical bits hanging off carabiner clips clump merrily down to their après dens. Chamonix has an unusual layout with two ski areas directly above the town but the other ski areas are outside the town. The skiing in the two nearest areas – Le Brevent and Le Flegere – can, in places, be hairy although there are some blues. But both require a black run or a bubble to get you back to town. There’s also a cable car

on the outskirts of town that takes you to the famous Aiguilles du Midi viewpoint, from where you can ski the 20km-long and world-famous off-piste Vallee Blanche routes. Up from Chamonix is Argentiere which, once you’re up on its pistes, you can only return to via a red or the bubble and it offers mostly blacks and reds with a handful of short blues. For less proficient skiers or those who just want an easier day’s skiing

then down the valley and 10 minutes along the motorway is Les Houches. It is a nice mix of blues and easy reds and offers stunning views over the Chamonix valley on a clear day, and has a pretty village below it where you can have lunch, as well as several piste-side eateries too. The property market in Chamonix is comparable to other high-profile Alpine resorts, but on average it’s less expensive, partly because demand is lower. It’s not somewhere you own a property for the caché so much, but rather because you’re a serious skier. It’s a market heavily dominated by apartments; studios kick off at €250,000 while two-bedroom flats start at €450,000 and three-bedroom apartments at €600,00. The region’s largest house builder, MGM, is also busy in and around Chamonix. It has a large ‘hotel-apartment’ style development called Le Crystal de Jade recently completed next to the Aiguilles du Midi cable car. It’s a five-star development of 56 luxury one to four-bedroom apartments in chaletstyle, four-storey properties. Attached to them is hotel-style reception with a resident’s lounge, a small bar as well as a sauna, spa, indoor pool, ski lockers and underground parking. The remaining available properties within the development are being sold via the French leaseback system. “Leaseback means that you own the freehold but lease the property back to MGM; in return the French government gives you back the 20% VAT it charges on new apartments, if you agree to rent it out,” says Richard Deans of MGM. MGM also has two other developmets under way near Chamonix. ◆ More information from www.mgmfrenchproperties.com/property
