everal years have passed since I turned up to school, eager and ready for a new term – and yet September still feels like a fresh start. Summer is over and it’s time to get to grips with a new year. This feeling is helped along, in London at least, by the advent of fashion week. Eyes are out on stalks for new trends and hot, young designers; equally, eyes turn towards the design world to wow us with innovative ideas. Luckily, we have been granted an insight into one of the of the world’s most prestigious interiors events, designjunction. Discover what we found out from the founder about this year’s showcase on page 10. In terms of fashion, we caught up with handbag designer Sevda; born

in Turkey and living in England, her ‘Designed in London, made in Italy’ philosophy and chic bags embody the best elements of Fashion Week. Not content with all London has to offer in this most busy of months? Not to worry, our travel feature will transport you to a place of adventure and discovery in Kenya, all whilst maintaining a fabulous sheen of luxury on page 50. All the latest property news and listings for the local area begin on page 69, so if you’re seeking a change of place, look no further. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! u

SHOW TALK

Absolutely meets Deborah Spencer, founder of designjunction, to discuss moving to King’s Cross, Scandinavian style and dyslexia Interview Pendle Harte

Q: designjunction is now six years old. How has it evolved over the years? A: From our very humble beginning back in

Geofleur

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chis_Sept16_designjunction.indd 10

2011 - when we presented just 30 brands in a basement venue in Central London - the show has grown to more than 200 worldrenowned contemporary design brands. This year, the show is going to be even bigger and better at our new location in King’s Cross. Over the course of six years we have built up a reputation for occupying some of the most challenging and ambitious spaces in central London from a 40,000 sqm disused sorting office to a derelict design school last year. Now we are taking over an entire site, with public realm outdoor spaces making it even more accessible. King’s Cross has undergone one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the UK and is now one of the coolest and most connected destinations in London. It’s the ideal setting to take the show to the next level. If designjunction is at the cutting-edge of design, King’s Cross is at the cutting-edge of the future, encapsulating our core brand values and personality. For the first time, we will be building temporary outdoor structures at King’s Cross as well occupying existing indoor spaces. One of the most impressive sites is on Lewis Cubitt Square, where we plan

celebrating their 50th anniversary alongside lightjunction, which presents the best in contemporary decorative lighting. There will also be a secret garden champagne bar out the back to relax. designjunction also forms part of the King’s Cross Creative Quarter which brings together all the cultural institutions within the area alongside some of the finest eateries in London – Grain Store, The Lighterman, Vinoteca to name but a few.

to build a two-storey pavilion and have commissioned Satellite Architects to design a monumental façade in front of the structure. The façade will be 70m long by 7m high made up of 4,000 individual GRID cubes with reflective mirrored surfaces. Last year we occupied two sites in central London that allowed us to have a dedicated retail venue and a dedicated venue for trade. This year, designjunction will occupy four locations, creating a mini city with different social quarters for eating and drinking, entertainment, exhibitions, business and pleasure. There is also plenty of shopping from more than 60 boutique pop-up shops, not normally found on the high street.

Q: What are the highlights of this year’s event for you? A: One of the biggest highlights is the move to our new home. Rather than taking over an existing venue we will be occupying an entire site. Key highlights include the customdesigned red monopoly-style houses we are building on Granary Square. Ten of these houses will be filled with immersive design concepts. Under the Canopy area, visitors can experience some of the best shopping from fashion and jewellery to glassware, ceramics and books. One We Made Earlier will be

about art and design. My mind worked in a creative way due to my dyslexia. It allowed me to think more laterally. I loved anything to do with art. At school I would spend lunch time in the art workshop painting, making or drawing things. Weekends were spent going to art galleries. I then did a year at art school and a degree in history of art. I was also inspired by grandfather, who worked in both fashion and retail. The combination of commerce and design felt like a natural fit.

Q: What designers and styles do you admire? A: Scandinavian design is the style I

presenting their latest jewellery collection with custom-made options available. Tom Pigeon will be selling some of his graphic prints alongside stylish tech accessories from Native Union and leather bags from Holdall & Co. At Cubitt House, you will find some of the world’s leading design brands from Icons of Denmark, String, Design House Stockholm to Modus and Deadgood – all presenting new product launches. Independent designer Christopher Jenner will present a two-year collaboration with Sheffield-based heritage silverware brand Elkington & Co. The collection is really stunning. LSA International will be

Q: Where does your own interest in design come from? A: Growing up I was always passionate

gravitate towards the most. Great designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Han J Wegner, Verner Panton and brands such as Carl Hansen, String and Hay producing beautiful pieces for the home. Scandinavian design has an understated aesthetic. It’s also affordable, functional and made using natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. I am also a huge admirer of Jasper Morrison, it’s the simplicity of his work that I love. Very minimal.

Q: There’s a new focus this year on dyslexia in design. How did that arise and what is it? A: This is a subject matter very close to my heart. I grew up with dyslexia. At the time, I couldn’t understand why people at my school were miles ahead of me academically. I naturally gravitate towards the arts. It was a subject matter I was good at without any

restrictions on my creative ability. Dyslexia led me down the path of art and design. In some respects it has defined me as a person. When I was approached by Jim Rokos to host an exhibition on Dyslexic Design I immediately said yes. The exhibition, curated, organised and driven by Jim, aims to explore the connection between dyslexia and the creative industries. Looking at the positive effects as well as the challenges that people face working with a learning difference. The exhibition’s main goal is to remove the stigma of dyslexia and reveal it as a gift. It will look at how dyslexia affects a person’s lateral and visual thinking. Dyslexic Design will showcase the work of many designers and illustrators such as Sebastian Bergne and Kristjana S Williams who say dyslexia has enhanced rather than limited their creativity.

Q: You arranged a designer sample sale last year. Will that happen again? A: The event was the first multi brand product sample sale in London. It presented an opportunity for many of the brands who exhibit with us to sell off old stock, exdisplay items and discontinued lines. Yes we will definitely do it again. The plan is to host this event bi annually to allow brands to build up their stock again…..

Ceramics by Elsa Beskow, Design House Stockholm

Q: And finally - where do you live and is your house full of pieces from designjunction? A: I live in West London, Kensal Green.

Ommo designs

Q: How much work goes into organising designjunction? A: Honestly - a lot. This is partly because we take over ambitious venues in London. As you can imagine these spaces present all sorts of challenges. We have occupied a disused Tramshed, old sorting office, school and now an entire site. I can’t complain because it makes the show so exciting and interesting to work on each year. We never stand still. Each year has to be bigger and better than the previous year. I wish we had more than 12 months to work on it. I have an incredible team around me.

My home is like a showroom advert for designjunction. This is the problem when you work on a show like this, you want to buy everything for your home. My kitchen/lounge area is filled with Scandinavian brands from Carl Hansen dining chairs and lounge seating to String shelving. I’ve even got birch trees installed to give a wood-like aesthetic. Pendant lighting across the space is from brands such as Artemide, Nyta and Innermost. Furniture from Modus, Kartell and Moroso. Objects from Moooi, Utopia & Utility, Tom Dixon the list goes on…. 

ersonally, I have always loved a print with people in it. Figures of any kind on a summer dress are an immediate sell for me, though unfortunately they're quite rare. Flower prints, paisley, even birds, are everywhere. But it's not often that you find a blouse embellished with tiny surfers, ballerinas, tennis players or girls in bikinis. And this is neither a children's collection (as proven by the karma sutra print) nor is it too cute. French label G.Kero is sold internationally with a cult following and its cotton shirts and blouses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts come in prints that are unlike any others

we've seen. There's the Bowie tribute Spaceman shirt (look closely and it's covered in tiny Aladdin Sane figures) and the Michael Jackson one – but this is a world away from the low-rent fan shirt. These are grown-up pieces in sharp cuts and quality fabrics, with an extra dose of fun. We are fans, as are Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne. ◆ G.Kero is stocked at violalondon.com and at gkero.fr

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE

In The Bag We catch up with the woman behind handbag brand Sevda London I n t e r v i e w A B S O L U T E LY

ABSOLUTELY: What inspired you to start designing handbags? SEVDA LONDON: My defining career moment was realising my desire to make a high quality, as well as an ethically produced, handbag fulfilling every possible fantasy a women had in a bag. I only had one purpose in mind: to create an object that is rare, desirable, durable and everlasting.

ABS: Where in the world inspires you?? SL: I couldn’t pick just one place! I am very much familiar with eastern culture as well as the west and women’s needs regarding their individual preferences and the way they express themselves. I feel more global than just belonging to one culture. It is reflected in my designs and makes it appealing to all women around the world, east and west.

ABS: Where did you study? SL: I was encourged by my mother to pursue my dreams of becoming a designer so I studied fashion design at the Mimar Sinan Faculty of Fine Arts Textile and Fashion Design in Istanbul. I relocated to London to hone my craft and completed a variety of courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

ABS: Why did you choose Canary Wharf as a base? SL: Both Mayfair and Canary Wharf are our base. While we have our sales meetings with high end buyers at the Mayfair office, we mostly welcome our private customers in Canary Wharf. Lots of our customers come from the city and we work with lots of people on private orders, so this has been an ideal base for us. We also really enjoy being in the buzz of Canary Wharf, the shopping and the wide open spaces. It is also a great place for style inspiration! ◆

ABS: What is your design process? SL: I use my sketchbook! I am old-fashioned in my approach. Then it’s all about the

I had only ONE PURPOSE IN MIND: to create something RARE , DESIRABLE and DURABLE materials – I spend a lot of time handpicking and analysing each material. And of course London, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, stays at the heart of my creative ability and inspires me all the time.

sevdalondon.com

ABS: How would you define your style? SL: SEVDA LONDON Handbags are ethical, timelessly classic, modern and chic. Our motto is: ‘Designed in London; Made in Italy.’ Sevda London specialises in identifying quality leather and ensuring a well-finished handbag that makes a woman stand out. I want each woman to feel as if each handbag was made just for her. ABS: Who else do you admire? SL: For me there is only one lady who epitomises style, longevity and elegance, all the things that Sevda London aspires to encompass, and that is Coco Chanel.

MUSTAFA ARSLAN of STUDIO M.A

Tell us about STUDIO M.A? STUDIO M.A offers a cutting edge hair and beauty salon based off Fleet Street in the heart of the City. We have a variety range of treatments from a glamorous blow dry to our custom made colouring services, beauty treatments and laser and Botox. What is your background? I was born in Turkey and I started my hairdressing career in Istanbul when I was 14 years old. I moved to London in 2005 to further my career and began working for an established hair salon in Mayfair. Over the years I have worked on various photo shoots and accumulated industry awards with one vision ahead of developing my own brand. Why open in the City? There’s nowhere quite like the hustle and bustle of the City. Not only is it the oldest and most historic part of London, it is also the world’s leading international financial and business centre. Everyday and every client is interesting. What has been your proudest moment? There have been many proud moments in my life but one of the most special was when I became a dad to my amazing son Kai in 2010; needless to say he changed my world for the better. However my most recent achievement career wise was working with Dior at Cannes Film festival. It was a privilege to do the hair of many respected A-listers; an incredible moment that will never be forgotten. ◆ ● STUDIO M.A 34 Bouverie Street, EC4Y, 020 7936 4005; studio-ma.co.uk

COIN LAUNDRY Seventies-inspired food tucked away in Exmouth Market Wo r d s r o s e n o e l

t’s not often that a restaurant can claim that one of their biggest draws is a superbly executed chicken kiev. Coin Laundry’s menu reads like a list of dishes you never knew you craved until you saw them and over the summer they launched their brand new All-Day menu which adds to this trip down memory lane . Once my friend and I are settled with some delicious cocktails (try the ’Flipper’) we choose two small plates and a salad to start. The steak tartare packs a punch and is served ingeniously with crunchy breadsticks to scoop it up while the fried marrow and mint is a revelation. The pea and ham hock salad is comfort food at its very best, warm and filling and perfect to share between two. For mains, the lure of the chicken kiev is too strong for me and I in no way regret my choice. On first stab garlic butter spurts out in a satisfying gush revealing the perfect combination of butter, tender chicken and crispy breadcrumbs. It even comes with a stick of gum to stave off any breath disasters. My companion chooses the lamb chops and wolfs down the perfectly cooked meat, offset by braised leeks and cottage cheese. With eyes far bigger than our stomachs we also attempt the spaghetti hoop primavera (who wouldn’t?) and are eventually defeated. Fortunately, skipping pudding gives us the perfect excuse to come back again. 

Elmore Jam

Top notch live music and food at this unique supper club Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

ondon supper clubs are nothing new but finding a really great one is a rarity. The venue, theme, food and entertainment all have to be spot on to allay the trepidation diners feel at being slung together at a communal table. Luckily, the Elmore Jam excels in all areas. Walking down the quiet residential street just off Essex Road, the strains of a far off trumpet are the only hint of anything out of the ordinary. The supper club is located in the basement, accessible from the street. There are already people clutching cocktails sitting around a table outside and milling around the band when we arrive. The Elmore Jam specialises in teaming dynamic and innovative chefs with next level live music; we had come on a New Oreans themed night entitled The Big Easy where the four piece band were already in full swing. In the kitchen we can spy the Dinner Ladies, an energetic duo made up of Daisy Cecil and Lily Cai whose

boundless enthusiasm is dwarfed only by the enormous pot they have simmering on the hob. As we sip our whisky cocktails we take in the decor. Vibrant artwork adorns the walls and a large trestle table stands at the back of the room, strewn with newspapers announcing the headlines in New Orleans. Scrumptious crispy fried pork boudin balls with a creamy creole remoulade are passed around before we take our seats. As the band take a break we are handed a list of songs available on the jukebox – all of them classics. The food throughout the night is exceptional; a crawfish boil is served, Louisiana-style, poured down the table with everyone tucking in. This is followed by a sinfully good pecan pie and a shot of bourbon. What makes the night unforgettable, however, is our host Nick, whose warmth and energy has everyone laughing and at their ease. Top notch.  E L M O R E JA M 2a Elmore Street, N1 grubclub.com

French-designed, it’s high on style and available in a range of chic colours (as well as with an optional newborn pack) – and while it takes a little more assembly than some buggies, once you’ve put it together it feels sturdy and is so, so easy to use. Speak up

Debating has long been seen as the preserve of public schools, but a charity founded by Sam and Holly Branson and Princess Beatrice is hoping to change that Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

W

hen Magdalen College School, Oxford, triumphed over Hutton Church of England Grammar School in the Debating Matters National Final at the end of last term, the standard of oratory was very high. Sixth-form students Tom Gould and Joel Stanley beat the former champions from Hutton Church at the events held at the Museum of London, arguing that there should not be limits to free speech on social media. Their teacher, head of politics at Magdalen College, Dr James Panton said: “My kids went further than I’d imagined they could and are obviously delighted. But more than that - the whole weekend is a testament to what we can do with smart young kids when we’re willing to push them to take themselves seriously. They’ve learnt more this weekend than in the preceding 12 months. And they loved it” Of course, ‘Top Public School Wins Debating Cup’ is not a surprising headline. The teaching of oratory skills has long been seen as the preserve of public schools, but a charity co-founded by a princess has been working with an inspirational east London school in an attempt to change this status quo. School 21 in Newham is a free school founded by Tony Blair’s former speechwriter Peter Hyman. Hyman has been very public in his belief that speaking skills should be at the heart of the school timetable, denouncing moves by Ofqual a couple of years ago when it decided that teenagers would no longer be awarded marks for speaking and listening in GCSE English. He said: “Speaking eloquently is a moral issue because to find your voice

THE SKILL of oracy is at the HEART of SOCIAL mobility both literally and metaphorically and be able to communicate your ideas and your passions is crucial to how they are going to be a success in the world. If you can speak and articulate yourself properly that will happen. But it’s also the number one issue that employers put in all their surveys: they want good oral communication.” Pupils at School 21, which is in a very underprivileged area of London, are now learning to find their voices with the help of Big Change, a charity that supports young people with skills outside

47 Chis_September2016_EDUCATION_R.indd 47

a traditional academic curriculum. The charity was co-founded by Princess Beatrice and Sam and Holly Branson, scions of Richard. Princess Beatrice told a workshop of 11 and 12 year olds that she initially found school a “nightmare” where she “struggled” because of dyslexia. It was only when she went on to secondary school and joined the public speaking team that she felt more confident. Also taking part in the project was Karl Lokko, who as a teenager had been a south London gang leader. He said the day before he had taken his GCSEs, one of his friends had been killed. "He was murdered by my side," he said. But even being able to "denounce gangsterism" had meant having to learn a vocabulary and way of communicating he had never acquired growing up. Lokko, who read one of his poems to the pupils, said he had deliberately set about learning 10 new words a day underlining words he had not understood in books or articles and then looking up their meaning in a dictionary. Peter Hyman said speaking skills represented a major barrier to disadvantaged young people. Hyman warned of a "speaking deficit", adding the skills of "oracy" were at "the heart of social mobility". Too often poorer youngsters and their families lacked the confidence to speak up for themselves, he said. Hyman said schools should focus much more attention on helping young people express themselves verbally, not least in terms of improving their job chances. He also said speaking skills were linked to children’s sense of wellbeing. Princess Beatrice said: "We live in a world where everything is moving at such a fast pace. "You have to find an identity that's true to yourself. You really have to find your own voice." u

INTO THE WILD We take the trip of a lifetime to find the real king of the jungle W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

hen I was five years old, I remember my Dad returning from one of his long haul trips to Los Angeles. Usually, he’d bring back edible presents – Lifesaver sweets and Hershey’s Kisses – but this one particular time he brought us back something else. Out of his small cabin bag came a rectangular box, a VHS, and on the front was a cartoon lion, surrounded by a pack of other wild animals – a wildebeest, a meercat and a mandrill – all standing proud on a large rock. It wasn’t long before the video was thrust into the player and my brother and I were hooked on The Lion King. Ever since that morning, when we delved into Disney’s representation of the African wild, we have both dreamt of going there ourselves to experience the natural world at, well, its most natural. Our mutual desire to visit the land of lions has never ceased. So after 12 years of discussing, and one and a half years of planning, we were on our way to Nairobi for the trip of a lifetime. The flight with Kenya Airways was a breeze, and before we knew it we were ushered out of Nairobi Airport and packed onto a single engine Safarilink plane and on our way to our first port of call in northern Kenya.

If you’re feeling brave,

THE TEAM AT SEGERA will happily set YOU UP A BED OUTSIDE SEGERA RETREAT

O

ur first stop was Segera Retreat, just north of the equator, on the Laikipia Plateau. This part of Kenya is an important migratory corridor within the Ewaso ecosystem – to put it simply, it is buzzing with life. The resort, which sits in the shadow of Mount Kenya, is a lush nirvana in the middle of wild grassland. Made up of a ring of luxurious stilt villas and an oasis-style private pool, each villa runs on solar energy and has a private balcony facing the bush and an al fresco Jacuzzi, which is ideal for a postsafari soak. While you’re there, you will also catch a glimpse of some of the park’s wildlife drinking at one of the watering holes nearby. If you’re feeling particularly brave, the team at Segera will happily set you up a bed outside, so you can star-gaze until you drift off. Before the land was acquired by Jochn Zeitz in 2005 it was overrun with

poachers. But an eight-year conservation project transformed it into a reserve committed to protecting and cultivating the land and its animals. Alongside this, Zeitz invested time and money on initiatives to help preserve the wildlife and improve the lives of indigenous people. Safari is a bit of a tourist trap. Finding oneself alone with a lion or a rhino is, unfortunately, unlikely. In fact, people warned us to expect a flurry of 4x4s jumping dunes to get a glimpse of anything moving on the savanna. But clearly these people didn’t visit Segera. Our experience here was one of solitude and discovery. The resort has only eight villas, which means it is never overrun. Secondly, it’s the only resort in the 50,000 acres of wilderness, which means a fleet of noisy Jeeps just isn’t a concern. Our game drives tended to be in the evening – a 5.30pm departure, when the temperature dropped – with the hope of us spotting something during three-hour trips. We saw plenty: lions (only a few, mind), elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and even a hippo bathing at the watering hole by my room. While the wildlife is certainly the draw here, there’s plenty more to enjoy. The food, for example. The staff at Segera will do everything in their power to ensure you are happy and well-fed, and are more than happy to take requests. If

Segera lays on a surprise Out of Africa style picnic in the bush

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST plenty of other safari dwellers, so it’s less intimate than the Segera safari. But the wildlife is abundant: male lions laze under the shade of a tree, lionesses sit in packs across the savanna, the distinctive Masai giraffes run alongside your car, elephants wander across the bush in their hordes, and Black rhino can be found. This prehistoric beast has inhabited the world for some 60 million years and, after years of poaching, is now an endangered species. It is believed there are only 2,500 left in pockets of Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. And it

you’re craving pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, you can have them. Or is chicken curry and daal your favourite? Just ask. Most evenings we left it up to the kitchen to surprise us, but on request we persuaded the chef to cook us up an authentic Kenyan feast including staple dishes such as ugali (a starchy porridgelike substance), meat stews, sukuma wiki (collard greens cooked with onions and tomatoes), chapattis and a coconut kidney bean soup better known as maharagwe. One day we were whisked off to a prime ‘lion viewing’ spot in the bush, where we were surprised by an al fresco picnic that could’ve been plucked right out of the set of Out of Africa. Everything about Segera is on point; they combine luxury with rustic charm, provide a 24-hour concierge service, unlimited game drives, your own driver and allocated waiter, and a type of hospitality you’d expect to find at a friend’s home. To top our stay at Segera off, as we were leaving the resort, our driver David suddenly stopped the car, pointed quietly, and whispered, “Chui”. We glanced in the direction of his finger, and to our amazement there was a Chui (Swahili for leopard) standing by a fence, looking at us. Within seconds it turned away and raced off. But that didn’t matter, we had seen it, and it was wonderful.

J

etting from northern to southern Kenya, we saw an extraordinary change in landscape and animals. From the seared grasslands in Laikipia Plateau to the verdant planes of the Masai Mara, we were onto the next chapter of our African adventure. As the plane glided into land, we spotted a clan of hyenas near the runway, countless

harems of zebra, towers of giraffes and herds of elephant grazing nearby amidst the trees. Life was everywhere. Which meant we were in for a lot of lion sightings. Wilson, our friendly, talkative driver, picked us up and whisked us off to the camp. Comprised of 30 luxury tents, split in half across two camps and overlooking the vast Masai Mara, the camp is on the Oloololo escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley. The main restaurant/ reception is an open wooden decked space, adorned with Moschino-style rocking chairs and an unrivalled vista that redefines the phrase ‘beautiful view’. The food is good, but the best dinner was had under a canopy of trees, lit with lanterns, where they cooked up a feast of meat and delicious salads. Unlike Segera, Angama is more about a shared experience. There are communal dining areas where you can socialise with other guests or chat over a bonfire and a cocktail. The drives are different too – there are park fees, and

53 B&C_September_Kenya.indd 53

was the final animal, the one to complete our sighting of the Big Five, and the one we thought least likely to see. But as if by magic, to complete the trip of a lifetime, as we were on our final game drive, there it was, a black rhino with her baby plodding across the bush. And to top it off, not one 4x4 (other than ours) in sight. It was the most spectacular end to the most incredible trip, and has given me my very own story to treasure for the rest of my life. u  Economy return flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi with Kenya Airways (www.kenya-airways.com / 020 8283 1818) start from £722.45 including taxes. Gone to Pot

From 22 - 25 September The Geffrye Museum opens its doors to fifty of the UK’s best potters for Ceramics in the City 2016 Wo r d s s e r e n a s c a l z o

ooking for your next pottery purchase? Then look no further than Ceramics in the City. Held at the beautiful Geffrye Museum in Hoxton, this annual ceramics celebration brings together the works of an astonishing 50 potters from around the UK for a selling fair like no other. Exhibitors will include leading potters like Karen Bunting and Ben Davies but will also be introducing the rising talents of Myer Halliday, Kenyon-Wade and many more.

DELICATE PORCELAIN

will be shown alongside earthy STONEWARE

Contrast and variety will be highlighted throughout. Delicate porcelain will be shown alongside earthy stoneware and cool white glazes will oppose the colourfully painted vases and pots. The objects themselves will vary in price and purpose with smaller pieces and classic home-ware starting from £10 and larger, one-off ornamental pieces selling for several hundred. As well as the exhibits, which attract potters, collectors and design enthusiasts from across the country, there will be a selection of free demonstrations over the three days. Moyra Stewart, Yuta Segawa and Carlo Briscoe will each have 45 minutes

to demonstrate how they go about producing some of their wonderful designs. To entertain the younger visitors, Ceramics in the City will be holding free ceramics-inspired creative workshops for children that will take place over the weekend. These will involve taking inspiration from the exhibits to deisgn their own cermaic hanging ornaments and badges. Visitors will also get the chance to explore the wonders of the Geffrye Museum itself, which explores how people lived at home from the 1600s to the present day. Their 18th-century restored almshouses are full of evocative displays of home-life through the centuries, reflecting changes in society, behaviour, style and taste. The main fair will run from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th September but will launch with a special open evening on the Thursday. Open to all, the launch evening will give visitors a chance to preview the event and get a head start on their wish-lists.  geffrye-museum.org.uk

PROPERTY / PARK LIFE NIGEL LEWIS

PARKS in LONDON Best parks to live near in London

F

or decades our city has been hailed as one of the greenest in the world. And that’s not surprising; it’s got eight million trees, 30,000 allotments, three million gardens and 3,000 parks and commons covering 47% of its surface area. And if Joanna Lumley gets her way, a garden bridge too. But green spaces have a monetary value for homeowners as well as a pleasing look. Research has shown that apartments near to parks are 8% more valuable than those that aren’t. And as London’s overcrowding problems have increased, we’ve all come to treasure our local parks. Here are some of the best.

RAVENSCOURT PARK, HAMMERSMITH, W12

CRANE PARK, RICHMOND, TW2

Average property prices nearby: £362,300 for a flat, £617,700 for a house. his 75-acre park is one of London’s less predictable. It’s between T Twickenham and Feltham and is a thin, long green space running alongside the River Crane. From the mid-18th century until 1927 gunpowder was made on the site, which was then sold to the local council and turned into a wildlife park. This is now home to a thriving colony of marsh frogs and a rare kind of water vole as well as a Shot Tower, which is thought to have been used to spot the fires that gunpowder production often started. Also, the River Crane is said to be one of London’s few remaining natural water courses.

"Green spaces have a monetary value for homeowners" BEAVERSFIELD PARK, HOUNSLOW WEST, TW4

Average property prices nearby: £245,000 for a flat, £450,000 for a house. eaversfield Park is unusual because it’s one of the few parks to B be purpose-built since the Victorian era. It was opened in 1935 to give the residents of west London’s burgeoning suburbs somewhere to relax and exercise. The park became a ‘no-go zone’ at one point but in 2004 it was refurbished and has gone on to win Green Flag awards in 2008, 2010 and 2015. It has a cricket pitch, football pitches and tennis courts.

WATERLOW PARK, HIGHGATE, N6

Average property prices nearby: £811,726 for a flat, £2m for a house. aterlow Park is next to Highgate W Cemetery and is an achingly beautiful public park overlooked by a grand mansion which is now a café, education centre and events venue. Bequeathed to the public in 1889 by Sir Sidney Waterlow as a ‘garden for the gardenless’, today it includes several tennis courts, a nature area, playground, pounds and a kitchen garden. What hasn’t changed are the panoramic views. 

Average property prices nearby: £533,700 for a flat, £1.17m for a house. 20.5-acre park that’s the flagship green space of Hammersmith & A Fulham and dates back to 1883. It’s famous for cedar and plane trees as well as its lake, and has won a Green Flag several times. It has a paddling pool, kids’ beach in the summer, garden centre, café, basketball and tennis courts, AstroTurf football pitch, bowling green, netball courts and five playgrounds. IN THEIR OWN

WORDS

Wayne Lewis LET TINGS MANAG ER Portico, Bloomsbury

REBECCA NOONAN

S

ince leaving school and qualifying as a chef, I was working for restaurants doing sixty hour weeks, working every weekend and all bank holidays. I loved the job but the hours were long and something was missing for me. I moved to London at 20 and carried on working for some of London’s busiest American themed restaurants. I got into estate agency purely by chance. I was in my twenties and I was buying a flat from a very wellknown chain in Rotherhithe and on the day of exchange, it fell through. As much as it wasn’t the fault of the agent, the service I received was totally not acceptable and it was then I decide that I could do a much better job and so a month later I started my career in property. Twelve years on, I absolutely love my job. It keeps me on my toes with every day being different. The lettings market is where my skills lie; it is continuously changing with new legislation being updated, and so it’s important that I am able to guide the landlords through the process. Being an owner of my own portfolio of properties all over the

We have seen sharp rises in property prices in lettings UK, I’m well positioned to advise landlords on the best practice to maximise their rental income. We have seen sharp rises in property prices in lettings over the last few years and now with the aftermath of Brexit, it’s even more important that they speak to an expert. I have been in Bloomsbury for many years now and have seen some fantastic highs and some lows in my time here. Over the last few months we have seen a decline in the number of people buying buy-to-lets in the area, this has been caused by the increase 3% stamp duty that has been applied to second homes. Bloomsbury is a fantastic area to work in with the museums, picturesque squares and period buildings that have been many backdrops to some of London’s most famous films. We are also extremely lucky that we have some

of London’s finest universities in the area. Portico have introduced some useful packages for lettings, including the concierge package. It takes all the worry out of letting your property, offering the same service as our management package with added benefits that we can help with such as doing your annual tax returns, free inspections and we can also give your property an MOT in between tenancies. I’m extremely proud of Portico’s property management team, it is a very easy thing to sell to landlords as we have expert plumbers, electricians and handy men that make sure they look after the properties as if they were their own. We are in the middle of our busiest season and the students are out in full force as well as London’s professionals all looking to rent properties in Zone 1. We have done 60% more business in the last four months than the same period last year, and I see a record year for the Bloomsbury office as if people can’t afford to buy they will rent. I’m proud to work in a company that is changing people's opinions on estate agents. 

CYCLE LANES London’s new homes move up a gear

I

f you drive to work in London then you are part of a disappearing breed, according to Transport for London (TfL), which says that by 2018 the number of Londoners cycling to work will outnumber those in cars. But if you are a London commuter, are you surprised? Anyone who travels to work by public transport will rant with barely-veiled anger about the high costs and the sardine-like experience you get in return. Cycling has downsides too, including the dangers of being among traffic. Recent figures from the Department of Transport reveal you’re 17 times more likely to be killed on a bike. But cycling is getting safer. A network of Cycle Superhighways is now in place, many of which separate cyclists from cars. Nine have been finished, with more on the plans. “As well as building new routes we’ve been going back and improving others, which in some cases involves adding segregation,” says TfL spokesperson Matthew Sparkes.

Even the home of football is twowheeled. Properties for sale and rent at Wembley Park Apartments have secure bike storage in the basements (020 3151 8601).

A network of Cycle Superhighways is now in place

in the popularity of cycling on board,” says Guy Meacock, of London buying agency Prime Purchase. A recent example is 250 City Road, designed by Norman Foster and being built by Berkeley Homes. When completed the twin-towered development will feature 1,486 bike parking spaces for its 930 apartments - but feature just 200 car parking spaces. Pedal powered residents will also get to use a bike lift between ground level and the basement, where there will be a cycle workshop too. Quebec Quarter in Canada Water is due for completion this Autumn, and has taken

SPACE FOR BIKES

The switch from cars to bikes is having an influence on the capital’s housing. It is now rare to find developments that offer a car parking space, and builders are attempting to attract two-wheeled buyers instead. “Developers in London are taking this rise 250 City Road near Old Street which is one of London’s most bike-friendly developments (020 3642 5486).

Agnes Place, which is being built next to Kennington Park, is right on one of the new cycle superhighways (03330 033660).

So perhaps London looks set to become a cycling city

A view of the site of Quebec Quarter, which offers safe cycle storage with every apartment (03330 033 663).

a different tack. It’s developer, L&Q, has realised more serious cyclists want secure storage for their high-value road bikes. Consequently, its apartments come with storage cupboards specifically designed to hold a bike. “Potential buyers have commented they rarely see cycle storage in a new-build home as generous at those at Quebec Quarter,” says Mo Clarke of L&Q.

Managing your property can be chaotic...

NEAR A SUPERHIGHWAY

We make it simple.

The network of cycle superhighways means that other public transport options are no longer the ‘must have’. A good example of this is St Agnes Place, a development overlooking Kennington Park. It might be near two Northern Line stations, but rush-hour carriages on that line are often ram-jammed. Instead, the development is next to Cycle Superhighway Seven which runs from Colliers Wood to near Bank station.

CHAIN REACTION

Contact our Property Management teams now to find out how:

But what happens when you get to work with your bike? Many cyclists say it is hard to find parking spaces inside or outside their offices, and that too often they return to find them gone; last year some 70,000 bikes were stolen in the capital, according to The London Cycling Campaign. To try and tackle this, the number of bike spaces required for a new office was doubled last year. So perhaps London looks set to become a cycling city. 
