R
emember, remember November is the month to really lean into the whole mulled wine, big jumpers, cosy getaways way of life. It is also, dare I say it, time to start mentally preparing for the Christmas period. Luckily, Dulwich Picture Gallery has the holiday season on lock with its fabulous Winterlights trail. This will bring the iconic gallery to life with a riot of bright colour and creative illumination; read our preview on page 12. With November also comes the advent of party season; we have some fabulous goth-chic suggestions from our fashion editor Charlotte Adsett as well as a beauty page full of travel kits to stow in your clutch or take with you on any winter adventures. Speaking of parties, this month our

resident perfume expert, Lawrence Roullier White turns his attention to Josephine Baker, the ultimate party girl as well as civil rights activist and her favourite Parisian perfume house. In that glamorous vein, our interview this month is with London local Yasmin Le Bon who has just designed a new range for Winser London; think bright colours and comfy knits. If you’re considering ditching London for a change of scene this November, take a look at this month’s travel story which sees me living a life of barefoot luxury at the Conrad Maldives I hope you enjoy the issue. ome December in a capital awash with festive splendour, it can be difficult to decide which winter wonderland to visit first. This year, Dulwich Picture Gallery is offering a unique and enchanting way to celebrate the season, with a spectacular winter lights trail and an artisan Christmas market. When night falls, the scenic gallery will re-open in a blaze of glory for Winterlights, a site-wide installation from the masters behind Christmas at Kew Gardens. Transformed with an astounding variety of illuminations, visitors will witness the historic building and grounds in a whole new light, brought to life after dark. With a dazzling lights trail winding along paths and explosions of colour illuminating buildings and trees, onlookers are sure to be amazed by the striking sights of Winterlights. Yet, it is the little twinkling touches that make this celebration truly festive. Glowing lanterns, bespoke lighting and luminous secluded nooks will create an enchanted atmosphere, offering visitors the first flush of that intangible, elusive Christmassy feeling. On top of this, 3D art specialists Nagual Creations have crafted two contemporary baroque-inspired
weekends (10-11 and 17-18 December) Dulwich will play host to an artisan market, providing the ultimate Christmas shopping experience. Instead of battling crowds on the high street, visitors can meander around 50 luxury stalls, resplendent with handmade crafts, jewellery and local produce. If you’re feeling creative, day time visitors can attend drop-in Christmas bauble-making workshops or, if you’re all about relaxation this Yuletide period, it’s the perfect time to
Christmas trees especially for the occasion, while a giant baroque gold frame in the grounds (designed to mirror the Gallery’s collection) will provide the perfect place for a festive photo. The display will be set to the score of live Christmas classics from roaming choirs, as well as the comforting sound of Christmas storytelling in the charming Keepers Cottage. Throughout this magnificent feast for the senses, you can indulge in warming mulled drinks and festive food treats from a variety of on-site vendors – including the Gallery’s own Christmas Cabin. Adding to the merriment, over both Winterlights

elen Manning Clark’s upcoming exhibition exudes its title ‘Bloom’ – through the vibrant flowering plants frequently captured in her pieces, viewers will witness the flourishing virtuosity of this internationallyacclaimed artist. Throughout November, Greenwich-based gallery M1 Fine Art will play host to over 40 previously unseen works in an exhibition that promises to fully immerse viewers in Manning Clark’s signature style. This will be the artist’s most extensive collection to date, with large abstract mono prints providing the focal point, intertwined with floral works, landscapes and still lives. Infused with the artist’s distinctive style, the exhibition makes for intoxicating viewing. It is Manning Clark’s bold use of colour and broad, yet somehow delicate, brushstrokes that prove most arresting throughout the collection. Repeated images of flowers in opulent purple and deep magenta are flecked with golden hues and blurred at the edges, giving a hazy sense of

movement. The images radiate a luminous sensuality and often appear to blur the lines between natural and urban landscapes. This will be Manning Clark’s first public solo exhibition since 2014, when she featured in The V&A’s hugely influential and highly acclaimed ‘From Club to Catwalk’. This explored the explosion of fashion in London in the 1980s and, for Manning Clark, meant a significant step into the public gallery and museum scene. For decades before this,

her designs graced high-fashion clothing collections and she created textile artwork for an incredible range of clients. Speaking of her upcoming exhibition, M1 Fine Art Gallery Director Peter McAllister said: ‘To be able to exhibit such a stunning collection of works from one of the most respected artists alive today is a true honour for us here … we look forward to seeing how her career progresses over the years ahead’ The exhibition will run from 3rd – 30th November and entry is free for all. Bon Marche
Yasmin Le Bon has designed a new clothing collection for Winser London. Here she discusses fashion and family Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d
PEARL BOYD: It must be very exciting to design a fashion collection. What do you enjoy most? YASMIN LE BON: It’s a wonderful thing to be part of a creative team – to work with creative people who know so much technically and who you can learn from. It’s great to be learning – that’s what I really enjoy - developing ideas, thinking about things. I had some specific ideas and I’ve been helpfully led and we’ve developed things together. That’s the beauty of doing this type of project. I don’t think you can do anything on your own in life.” PB: Has London influenced your collection? YB: I love London. I live here and feel very attached to it. I can’t think of another capital city that has so much diversity of everything – bars, music, culture and wonderful surroundings. I live in Putney so I have Richmond Park on my doorstep. To me that’s a huge inspiration. I couldn’t just live in a concrete jungle, I have to have nature around me all the time that’s what I’m constantly inspired by.” PB: Putting your name on something is personal – you’re sharing something of yourself with other people. How do you

think your new collection shows your personality? YB: Putting your name to anything is a really personal thing and you are laying bare your soul to some extent. It’s actually quite a liberating experience and a challenge and it’s a very good thing. I’m naturally a very shy person, so having to get over the idea of being judged and just wanting to express yourself in the hope that someone else is going to get what you’re after is actually a thoroughly enjoyable experience. And learning to compromise. Being part of a different kind of team has been a real education. PB: What was the mood and inspiration behind your collection? YB: I’m obsessed by classic cars. I have been for some time. I read classic car magazines from cover to cover. They are a big element in this collection. Part

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE of why I love classic cars is because I like classic design. I love design in general. You would never mistake one car for another, whereas now they all look similar. I love the whole idea of lady racers – at the beginning of motor racing there were a lot of women racing cars. Women enjoyed cars just as much as men and many of them were doing rallies all over Europe. I was really fascinated by the idea of women in that powerful, active, adventurous role. This collection has a real vintage feel to it. I love vintage clothes, vintage design. I love vintage car racing and that idea of the adventurous spirit and the adventurous woman who raced classic cars is behind this collection.
to me. That’s what developed the floral silk print design. It’s so much to do with coming upon the right thing at the right time. PB: How did you choose the fabrics, colours and prints? YB: There’s one fabric that I really wanted: a beautiful English herringbone tweed. To me it’s just gorgeous. It’s luxury. You could go out in the winter or the summer in it and it would keep you warm or keep you cool. It’s resilient yet still pure luxury. The English tweed came from that whole idea
PB: Are any of the pieces inspired by clothes you already own? YB: There are always things when you’re looking at designing a collection. You cherry pick from all sorts of areas. You look back at your own wardrobe - things that really worked – whether it was a great colour or texture. Or maybe something you thought didn’t quite work and you want to revisit it. I went vintage shopping in the States and found a wonderful flower brooch that really spoke
I like BLURRING the BOUNDARIES of nightwear and DAYWEAR
I like the idea of blurring the boundaries of nightwear and daywear. I’ve walked around wearing pyjamas and nightdresses in the daytime forever. I think it’s an incredibly luxurious statement. I wasn’t really thinking of the woman I was designing for – I was really thinking of me. Completely selfish. I want every piece!” of old racing suits and utility wear. Something that’s really practical but I wanted it to be luxurious as well, so it has an incredibly soft feel to it. Also the idea of the silk pyjama – that’s very much that 20s, 30s woman. She was very liberated and willing to take risks.”
Behind the scenes designing for Winser
PB: What type of woman are you designing for? YB: My woman is definitely adventurous and slightly athletic and sporty – she is playful.
19 Chis_Nov16_YASMIN LE BON.indd 19
PB: Are there pieces that your daughters will want to borrow? YB: I know what they’ll be after – the silk pyjama pant and the striped jumper. I can imagine my daughters’ generation wearing that with their ripped jeans or a big circular skirt – quite crazy. I think there’s an element for every generation.” PB: We know Simon loves clothes too – what does he think of your collection? YB: I have a feeling that Simon expects me to make the YLB Herringbone Tweed Zip Jacket for him. It’s not a man’s collection at all but when I told him what I was doing he instantly leapt up and said “Oh great! Can you do one for me?”. ◆ winserlondon.com

QUEEN B LUXURY NAIL LOUNGE Wo r d s y v e t t e m a r s h a l l
A
s a qualified gel nail addict, I was very interested to see what the fuss was all about at a new luxury nail lounge, Queen B. Using award-winning brands Cuccio Naturale, a world leader in hand and foot care with products formulated using the finest fruit extracts and botanicals, Queen B already had me hooked. As a woman who constantly likes to keep her nails on trend I'm not a fan of nail bars where you feel like you practically have to wear a mask. Queen B is a 10 minute drive from Crystal Palace, based on Brighton Road decorated with white flooring, tables and walls and filled with luxurious white seats – you know walking in that you will be in for a good pampering. The method for applying the gels was pretty standard but there was one thing that Charlotte did that I have never seen any nail technician do before painting: smooth down my nails with a clean brush. She explained that it keeps the nail smooth and allows the varnish to glide more easily onto the nail which creates a higher shine. True to her word I could clearly see the difference and writing this review two weeks later my nails are still shiny, even after constant washing up at home. Queen B are normally fully booked at the weekend so you need to book in advance for their services, which also includes his and hers spa manicures, the signature manicure and, of course, gel treatments. There is also a service for foot pampering that includes express pedicures, Spa pedicures and the signature pedicures. ◆ ● Q U E E N B LUXU RY N A I L LO U N G E 292 Brighton Road, Croydon CR2, 020 3441 7172; queenb.london

SCENT OF A DIVA
Nohiba EDT by E. Coudray
Discovering 1920s icon Josephine Baker’s signature scent W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e
O
ne night in 1951, outside the Stork Club in New York, a friendship was formed that would last almost a quarter of a century. After performing a successful show Josephine Baker was seated with her entourage in the bohemian hotspot, but the staff refused to wait on her table. Affronted at this racist slur Ms Baker left, along with her companions. In a gesture of solidarity for a woman she did not know another diner, Grace Kelly, summoned her table to stand and leave too. On the street the lifelong bond was cemented. I was told this story in the gift shop of the Château des Millandes, the castle in the Dordogne that was home to Baker, until she lost it in penury and was rescued by Kelly. It was from this castle that Baker ran the local branch of the French Resistance, for which she was awarded Croix de Guerre and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. She was a civil

rights campaigner and activist, refusing to play to segregated audiences in her native US, and the first black woman to star in a major movie, Zou-Zou, in 1934. Despite her humble beginnings in Missouri, by the 20s Baker was the decade’s most decadent, defying and defining divas. The fêted style-icon ruled the Parisian cabaret scene

of the art deco age complete with her pet cheetah, ‘Chiquita’ and she did this in a cloud of ‘Nohiba’ (formerly ‘Tulipe Noire’) by E. Coudray. French perfume house E. Coudray also enjoys an interesting pedigree dating back to 1822. During the reign of Louis XVIII a Parisian physician and pharmacist, Edmond Coudray, began supplying the royal courts of Europe with curative potions and balms. Soon he started to develop scented products and by the end of the century E. Coudray was one the five top perfume houses in France. Today, more than just a perfume line, E. Coudray offers a complete fragrancing experience, a literal immersion. Their beautiful pearlised bath creams are designed to be applied to the body before entering the bath, their rich body creams seal in another layer of scent before the eau de toilette or dry body oil is applied. The complete E. Coudray bath and beauty experience truly is an indulgent and luxurious one, that is reflected in the scents. Nohiba is a spicyoriental, but one would struggle not to find anyone a scent amongst this clever collection. From Iris Rose, a traditional full bodied floral by Randa Hammami, who created Cruel Gardénia for Guerlain, Epic Man for Amouage and Orchidée Vanille for Van Cleef & Arpels, to the modern, fresh floral of Givrine by Evelyne Boulanger, the same nose who gave us the stunning Comme des Garcons Series 2 Red Eau de Toilette: Carnation. Those who discover E. Coudray return time and time again, as Josephine Baker said; ‘The things we truly love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as life remains’.

HEALTH & BEAUTY / PROFILE facials and massage. I will continue to offer the current Dr Mayoni consultation and services which includes medical skincare systems such as Obagi, iS Clinical and Environ. Also chemical peels, medical dermaroller and of course the injectable treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
Dr Mayoni
ABS: What is your background? DM: I am a surgeon, and having trained in the NHS and worked in numerous hospitals around the country, I hope has stood me in good stead for this exciting new challenge of running a team of therapists and a new business. It has always been of paramount importance that I perform to the very best of my ability and offer the highest calibre in service. I also strive to understand the science behind the medical treatments I offer so that we offer a truly results-driven service.
Skin Deep Getting to know Dr Mayoni, owner of brand new Honor Oak beauty destination The Clinic Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s
ABSOLUTELY: What made you decide to open The Clinic? DR MAYONI: I had already been offering aesthetics to clients from my home-based clinic. This was hugely convenient while my client base was growing especially as we have a young family. Over time, it rapidly became obvious that many of my clients needed some machine-based treatments. I simply needed more space! Then earlier this year, I found out that Neroli was for sale. I also simply was unable to keep up with demand so it now means that whilst I continue to offer the injectable medical treatments, my therapists can now carry out the non-injectable treatments too such as the peels, under my guidance.
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
DUL_Nov16_DR MAYONI.indd 40
ABS: What is the look you’ve gone for with the refurb? DM: I wanted something that would offer comfort and calm with a slight sense of clinical without being too medical! I’ve also taken some inspiration from some other beauty retail spaces like Aesop and I’ve tried to draw on elements of my Sri Lankan heritage too. I’ve worked closely with Giles Hardy who is a very talented interior designer and friend who has been involved from the outset with the design and mood that we wanted to create. ABS: Any favourite South East London hangouts? DM: For a casual night out, I’d choose Donde for a bit of tapas, who are 2 doors down from us, or Bona who serve fabulous pizza on Dartmouth Road. The Pedler in Peckham Rye is also another all time favourite.
ABS: Can you describe what The Clinic is all about? DM: All the time my practice has been growing, it has become increasingly obvious to me that people particularly mums, often feel guilty at creating a bit of space or time for themselves. The Clinic is all about pressing a pause button on our busy, modern life. ABS: What treatments will be available there? DM: I am pleased that we will continue to offer the beauty treatments that have always been offered by Neroli such as manicures, pedicures, waxing, IPL for hair removal as well as skin rejuvenation,

CONFIDENTIAL South East London’s food news and delicious things to see you through November W o r d s C AT H E R I N E H A L E S
A GREAT MATCH Wine and food pairings for the month ahead B y J a n e Pa r k i n s o n
CHICKEN LIVER PARFAIT ith a pâté so decadent in flavour and with a smooth dense t exture the most successful pairing is a fresh and fruity wine with a very (very) light touch of sweetness. This New Zealand white is perfect because its juicy pear flavours and crispness cut through the flavour and texture of the parfait brilliantly. u ● Kumeu River Pinot Gris 2014 £11.99, majestic.co.uk
W
TURKEY WITH TRIMMINGS he family favourite Christmas dinner is a rich combination of flavours including bacon, cranberry, stuffing and gravy, so a ripe red is best. France’s Rhône Valley has these in abundance. This one is made with the Syrah grape and has a beautiful peppery spice to lift the elegant layers or red and black fruit. u ● Alain Graillot Crozes Hermitage 2013 £22.50, yapp.co.uk

STILTON intage Port with Stilton is one of the all-time wine and food greats. Blue cheese is incredibly potent, so the wine pairing needs to be sweet and full-flavoured if it has any chance of not getting lost. This is from a classic producer and is at a delicious drinking stage now with dark black fruit, clove, star anise and chocolate flavours. u ● Warre’s 2000 £45.75 leaandsandeman.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEWS BabaBooM Kebabs but not as you know them in SW11 Wo r d s E ly s i a Ag n e w
orget the regretful late night kebabs of your youth, Bababoom are taking the notoriously dirty snack back to its Middle Eastern roots. The trick is in the grilling, cooking their meat over hot charcoal coals, the smokey shish is nothing like the one you devour from your local grill at 2AM. First things first, my friend and I order a frozen margarita. After this, a tropical combination of Piquepoul and crisp sauvignon blanc arrives which we sip while browsing the menu. We choose to start with a sharing plate of the creamy homemade Baba’s hummus, served with raw vegetables and flatbread. Seriously moreish, our main courses arrive soon after we finish. We order two dishes; the saffron and orange chicken shish and the lamb shoulder kebab are both served inside a freshly grilled Persian flatbread. The chicken is paired with coal-fire red peppers, Za’atar crisp Fattoush salad and a side of Merguez sausage so the result is sweet and spicy. The rotisserie lamb is cooked well, served with pomegranate onions and a side of grilled Mastelo cheese. We also ordered a side of smashed aubergine that was a little bit fiery so suited the fire grill concept well. To seal the deal we enjoy Eve’s date caramel vodka. A smooth sweet shot with an alcoholic kick to cool the spicy palate down instantly. Chatting to one of the owners, we found out that BabaBoom was just a little bit of fun between friends Ω something that resonates in the space itself. It’s a joyous, flavoursome and fiery new venture that you must check out. We really can’t wait to try the short-rib adana and pistachio flatbread next time... ◆

Hattush Tantalising Turkish cuisine in the heart of Honor Oak Wo r d s y v e t t e m a r s h a l l
B
ack in August we announced a new restaurant in Honor Oak serving amazing food and week-end entertainment, this restaurant has gone from strength to strength. So now we’re back to actually sample the delights of Turkish food. Owner Sezar greeted us and took us to our table and offered the menu which is filled with many options of dishes to share and main meals to follow. The menu is divided into vegetarian, fish and meat dishes. The decor in Hattush is clean, with white walls dressed minimally in ancient Turkish carvings and background music that immediately gives you a relaxed feeling of being on holiday. After poring over the tempting options we decided to go for a vegetarian starter to share. We ordered a cold starter of Baba Ganoush; this is made from smoked aubergine with tahini, olive oil and a splash of lemon, along with Hattush Piyaz, white
bean salad with onions peppers and parsley, pitta bread and falafel with hummus. This was a feast of a starter but we managed to devour it all complimented with a great Turkish Red wine Pamukkale Sefoni. For mains my friend opted for the lamb shish, lean tender lamb skewers made from finest cuts of meat grilled over charcoal with a fresh side salad , chips and a pot of the most amazing chilli sauce. I chose a vegetarian musakka, layers of potato, aubergine, courgettes and carrots baked in a bechamel sauce with cheese and a fresh tomato sauce topping. This, along with a fresh Yesil salata salad finely chopped lettuce, fresh spring onion and tomato, pomegranates dressed with olive oil and pomegranate syrup was exceptional. This is an ideal meal for a winter evening, comforting and delicious. I’ll definitely be back. ● H AT T U S H

here’s no such thing as the perfect holiday. What may seem like a dream for one person might be a nightmare for others: for instance, the thought of camping interspersed with bouts of hiking or cycling sounds like a kind of elaborate torture to me in the same way that lying on a beach for seven days with a book and a cocktail may seem incredibly dull to others. Equally, for some, traipsing around cathedrals and historic town centres, guide book in hand, is infinitely more appealing than a remote villa nestled in the hills, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Despite this, I challenge almost anyone not to enjoy a week spent in the Maldives. Getting to the islands, located in the Indian Ocean, southwest

of India and Sri Lanka, is an adventure in itself. The initial flight is a relatively painless 11 hours and the Emirates service is exceptional throughout. We set down in Malé, the capital city, but this is a mere pitstop for us and we are soon ushered to a jetty where our seaplane awaits. Seeing it there, bobbing on the current, is a genuine thrill. The flight is fleeting and spent craning to catch the first glimpse of the island below. Barefoot luxury is not a new concept but it is rarely executed so well as at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. Our seaplane sets down in the middle of the wooden walkway that straddles the ocean between the two islands covered by the sprawling resort. We are greeted with cold towels and smiles, before being lead to our villas – Conrad Maldives doesn’t do mere rooms. Guests to the islands can choose between Beach

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST Activities abound on the island, with a snorkelling safari at the top of my list. Lucky divers can expect to see sea turtles, dolphins and over 1,000 different species of fish, due to the abundance of reefs. For my part, I was desperate to catch a glimpse of a whale shark, which, to my intense delight, happened on my fourth day, after two false alarms and a highly stressful moment where everyone tried to jump off the boat at once. For those adventurous types not content with diving, there is the opportunity to try Inside a Water Villa, situated over the crystal waters One of the stunning Beach Villas fronting onto the white sands
Villas and Water Villas, both of which are characterised by effortlessly chic design, favouring open spaces framed by wooden beams and easy-going island vibes throughout. The beach villas are aptly named. Guests can wander through large French windows down to their own little section of sand, complete with personal sun lounger and parasol. A short distance across the sea on the other island, the water villas look exactly like every image of the Maldives you’ve ever lusted over. The revelation however, is that those pictures had not been photoshopped: at least in the case of Conrad Maldives the cabin on stilts protruding from the azure water under a cloudless sky is exactly the same in reality. Each one comes equipped with a deck and a little pool facing out towards the open sea. I must admit that my pool remained mostly unused, as I preferred to amble down the deck’s stairs into the waiting sea.

flyboarding. This is a type of aquatic jetpack that shoots you into the air and allows you to hover before dropping into the sea. The rest of the stay is a blur of massages in the overwater spa, truly exceptional food from each of the 12 restaurants and bars peppering the islands (Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is one highlight, as is the lobster dinner on the beach) and sun-drenched hours spent recharging my mental batteries so depleted by London life. On my last night, my stay is made by seeing a giant ray, drifting to and fro under the walkway, playing in the underwater lights. My challenge stands: committed sun worshippers will find white sands; adventure seekers can snorkel and dive; foodies will be sated, nature buffs overwhelmed and, although cultural offerings are scarce, the sheer beauty of the surroundings is enough to inspire and awe. And nowhere does it better than Conrad.

earching for a sophisticated stayaction right here in the city? Those looking for an elegant bolthole in the middle of one of London’s best postcodes need look no further than the Marriott Hotel Park Lane. A prime spot for business travellers, families and couples alike, it also makes the perfect mid-week treat for a Londoner living on the edge of Zone 2. But it's more than just a good location: the hotel overlooks Hyde Park and boasts its own indoor swimming pool and high tech gym, too. The interiors are sumptuous and subtle with pops of colour giving them a modern edge and the marble floors give it a proper Park Lane finish.

L
ike many overworked Londoners, there are few things I enjoy more than a really good spa treatment; I decide to book into the The Club (the Mariott’s own spa) for The Absolute Facial and am excited to learn that all the treatments offered at The Club use products from luxury skincare brand AromaWorks. When I arrive I am greeted by my therapist who carries out a brief consultation which includes choosing my essential oil (I opt for Serenity, a wonderful mix of geranium and lemongrass). What follows is 55 minutes of bliss; after cleansing and exfoliating my face and décolletage, my therapist massages in the essential oil and applies the super hydrating Absolute Face Serum before administering a heavenly hand massage. I leave relaxed with my skin glowing.
THE RESTAURANT
W
hile Mayfair and Soho are known for their food, it's also worth staying in for dinner at the hotel's own eaterie, Lanes of London. The restaurant is a modern British eatery offering a seasonal menu, using locally sourced British rare-breed and wild food produce. On recommendation, we start with the beef carpaccio and then move on to the grill menu (which has fillet, rib eye, sirloin or a wagyu burger just under beef). There are fish and veggie options too, and the homemade fish and chips is a real winner. The wine list is comprehensive and the sommelier is informed and eager to help. A delightful meal and dining experience.

obert Leach of Install My Fireplace has worked on some of London’s most elite properties, most recently with Fabricari at 39 Palace Court in Bayswater, and he's the go-to stove man for countless interior designers including Anna Hewistson. With 14 years of expertise, he is adept at recommending the best option for your home, with both design and price in mind. What sets him apart is his personal approach: all his projects run smoothly and are finished to extremely high standards. "I'm a perfectionist," he says – so he completes all jobs himself, from start to finish, never sending a team in, and always taking the utmost care not to leave any mess. It is this one-on-one approach that has led to ongoing relationships with designers and clients.
A STOVE fireplace can add 5% TO THE VALUE of your home As an online business with no showroom, overheads are kept low and a comperehnsive online gallery provides lots of ideas to choose from. Stoves give off a great source of heat, with up to 89% efficiency. By contrast, an open fire, loses most of its heat up the flue, resulting in only 20%, or less, efficiency. Stoves are easy to use, with minimal mess and are quick to clean. Prices start from £650 for a stove, which gives off 89% of the heat that it produces, perfect for bringing that wholesome rustic warmth into your home. A stove fireplace can actually appreciate in value, adding up to 5% to the price of your property on the market. Practical, stylish and it will never go out of fashion, what better investment to make this autumn/ winter? u installmyfireplace.co.uk

hildren (especially boys) that struggle with reading normally can often exhibit hugely advanced skills if a non-fiction subject grabs them, and, as in the case of dinosaurs, their word deciphering abilities remain unfazed by polysyllabic names, and complex sentences. This principle deserves to attach to the British Library’s lavish study of the strange monsters that lurk in the corners and margins of early maps. Here be dragons, fish-birds; mermaids and whales masquerading as islands. And while the text may prove a bit dense, this is a book to fire the curiosity and expand the mind. Wonderful!

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK
Moving on up Transition to senior school is hard for many children, but a new study finds that teething problems can linger on... Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e
I
t is something quite depressingly familiar to many parents of teens. In Years 4, 5 and 6, you have a cheery, enthusiastic, bouncy child who wants to do everything at school. Choir, football, drama, drumming, dance, gardening, reading, chess, gymnastics, orchestra, swimming – you name it, they want to do it. And then they start senior school and before you know it the apple of your eye is a slumping morass of negative energy, too enervated by life to do much more than grunt (boys) or throw a hissy fit about something entirely inconsequential (girls). Until now, much of this change has been blamed on hormones, but a new study reveals there may be more to it than that. It has long been known that the transition to senior school is a difficult one. Parents quite naturally think children who aren’t settling easily are having ‘teething problems’ and assume these will subside after a term or two. Most do, but what if they don’t? A new study shows that for a significant minority of students, problems can be long term and, perhaps surprisingly, that these problems can be more defined in Year 9 than Year 7. According to research from GL Assessment which was based on data from almost 32,000 students, children’s generally positive attitudes to school not only decline once they move to secondary, but keep on falling for two or three years afterwards. These problems are not necessarily academic, but can be about confidence, boredom, friendship groups or quite simply their attitude to the school and their teachers. With all available research suggesting that a pupil’s attitude plays a vital role in his or her academic achievement, it is therefore important that these problems are nipped in the bud.
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
EDUCATION2.indd 70
Previously positive ATTITUDES to school DECLINE once children MOVE TO SECONDARY
The proportion of children who feel good about school declines from 94 per cent in Year 3 to 84 per cent in Year 9. Positive attitudes towards teachers fall from 93 to 84 per cent and towards attendance from 90 to 82 per cent over the same period. The biggest declines in all these factors occur after Year 7 and not before. The study also records an increase in students who say they are bored between Year 3 and Year 9, the number of children who say they like their
teacher falls 10 percentage points between Years 3 and 9. That might not be a huge number, but that equates to some 70,000 students in each year group who have a much more negative perception of teachers. Different schools will obviously face different issues. At Latymer Upper in west London, pupils come from a wide range of social backgrounds. Catriona SutherlandHawes, director of admissions at the school, says: “Moving to secondary school can be a challenge for children, particularly for those coming from a smaller school environment. They will worry about making friends, what others will think about them, whether they can keep up with the work. But it is in fact the same for all children, regardless of where they are joining from and Senior Schools will put huge efforts – not obvious to the children – into helping everyone settle in, no matter their background.” Boarding schools have their own set of challenges. Susan Hamlyn, the Director of the Good School’s Guide Advice Service says: “I imagine it can be tricky in the second and third years, especially in boarding schools. Often, children come up with others from the same prep but then, after the first year, they are sometimes separated and the less socially confident ones can feel a bit lost without friends they’ve had since Reception. Also, year 8 is the year, for girls in particular, making rapid and intense friendships and then having spectacular fall-outs and that, again in a boarding school, can create ripples through a house or class. Sensitive house parents see these kinds of things coming and handle such marriages and divorces with tact and sensitivity.” But whether it is housemasters or heads of year or pastoral care, what this study clearly shows is the importance of making sure pupils are truly settled at school, even if that is as late as Year 9. ◆

There is also the chance to attend a number of talks at the renowned Education Theatre, where the UK’s top heads and brightest thinkers will address some of the most important issues in schools right now. And it’s a fun day out for the family, with two great cafes from Muriel’s Kitchen, a free crèche, and Battersea Park to play in. rexit has not had a significant impact on London’s property market, with new figures showing the sector is continuing to grow. Results from the Office for National Statistics show house prices rose by 8.4 per cent across the country in the year to August, while in London this figure was 12.1 per cent. Jenny Holland, Sales and Lettings Manager at Leaders in Forest Hill says: “While some experts suggested Brexit would harm the property market, the exact opposite has been true in South East London so far.

However, adversely the amount of mortgages available to those who have larger deposits and are less risky has certainly increased. ore and more of us are hearing the call of the countryside and upping sticks from London’s busy streets. But where are we all going? The number of Londoners selling up and moving out increased by over 60% last year, according to research agent Hamptons International. This would appear to be a collective raspberry to London’s frenetic lifestyle as urbanites looking for space, a less competitive school enrolment system and less pollution vote with their feet. But it’s not just families cashing in their London equity. Hamptons International’s figures show that one in six of those escaping to the country are first-time buyers prepared to run the gauntlet of commuting into London to secure an affordable home. So where are the hotspots? Surrey envelopes much of SW

REBECCA NOONAN
grew up in the 1980s in Somerset, and whilst I was dreaming of football, Star Wars and The A Team, things were changing in SE1 London. The derelict warehouses of Shad Thames that were once home to tea, spices and breweries were being regenerated into residential apartments with bars, restaurants and offices below. After spending time in Italy, Japan and Australia, by 2003 I was back in London and was starting my first job in estate agency. Truth be told, I never intended to do it for very long, but meanwhile in SE1, things continued to evolve; Tate Modern opened in 2000 and shortly after Berkeley Homes bought the land next to Tower Bridge. I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed my new job. I loved the variety and I met so many interesting people. By 2006 I was running a big sales team and the market was really turning. In 2007 people started talking about “the top of the market” but many agents didn’t agree. The market was so good it seemed the sun would never set. Back over in SE1, Berkeley Homes were granted planning permission for 356 residential units and a cultural

centre in a residential scheme to be named One Tower Bridge. Then Lehman Brothers collapsed in September 2008 and the market changed forever; there were noticeably fewer speculative purchasers. However, as with all major market disruptions, life went on and people did move for the usual reasons Ω upsizing, downsizing, schools and work. The market recovered quickly, with demand still outstripping supply. Meanwhile, as the South Bank grew in popularity, Berkeley Homes had the wheels in motion on the construction phase of One Tower Bridge. In 2014 I moved to the Residential Development team in the City for Knight Frank. Residential Development is estate agency on the macro scale. These vendors are not selling one property; in some cases they are selling thousands. We consulted and
acted for some big clients including Barratt Homes, Ballymore, Great Portland Estate and Berkeley Homes. It was fascinating being involved in a process that began with selling land and finished with a new town. However, I missed working in a sales office; I missed the interaction and the journey of each transaction. So in 2015 when Knight Frank asked me to open our new sales office within One Tower Bridge, I felt very lucky. From day one, I enjoyed the diversity and this is what I love about working in SE1. I pass Tower Bridge daily; it is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, and it remains such an impressive sight. In Shad Thames there are superb lateral apartments with incredible views of the bridge and the City. Within moments you can be in One Tower Bridge with the finest quality in terms of build and amenities. Then you can walk through Borough Market with an endless variety of food and drink offerings, to the South Bank where the journey continues past more landmarks and superb residential buildings. SE1 has been on quite a journey during my life, but I am delighted we met and am looking forward to continuing this exciting adventure together. ◆

PROPERTY / BASEMENTS Traffic management and pavement access can be a crucial part of obtaining planning permission for a basement conversion
NIGEL LEWIS
GOING UNDERGROUND Londoners are digging deep for space. But how difficult are basement conversions to complete?
B
asement conversions in London are at an all-time high as many homeowners elect to sit tight and expand their homes rather than move and face a substantial Stamp Duty bill. Despite increased planning restrictions, the number of applications to convert basements has doubled over the past two years which, as builder Billy Heyman of BTL Properties explains, is not surprising. “It’s a no-brainer, really,” he says. “Our typical customer is living in a £2m house but to move up the ladder locally usually requires a spend of £3.5 plus a Stamp Duty and agent fee bill of nearly £400,000.” The cost of a basement is much less than that. But getting permission for a basement conversion is getting more difficult as many London borough planning departments, in particular Kensington & Chelsea and City of Westminster, crack down on the more ambitious projects. This year Westminster
established a ‘sub squad’ team to process complaints about basement conversions, and introduced a tax to be levied on each conversion, which is said to be £8,000 on average. This is fast reducing the number of high-profile ‘iceberg’ basement conversions being completed. These include those undertaken by Foxtons founder Jon Hunt, composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber, actress Nicole Kidman and oligarch Roman Abramovich, many of whom have added up to four storeys underneath their houses. “A lot of the councils are tightening up the planning process to try and create as many barriers as possible,” says Simon Haycock of Michaelis Boyd Associates. But the second type of basement conversion continues to boom. These are the onestorey dig-downs that are easy to spot outside a home. Usually, an electric conveyor pokes out of a downstairs window, wet clay clattering from the netherworld below into a skip.

“The really big projects that you see in the papers are all about having a basement swimming pool or cinema, but most of our work is about freeing up space and making a period property a usable family home,” says Simon Haycock. But if you’re about to take the plunge and go big below, there is plenty to think about. Reducing the floor level or creating a new basement is a significant engineering project and some say it can be more complicated than building a new home. “The kind of projects where you are simply lowering the floor of an existing basement to create standing room are usually less complicated because they are less invasive – but when you are creating a wholly new basement under a house, then the problems can occur,” says Douglas Brown of RenovationInsuranceBrokers. co.uk. In effect your home is underpinned two to three times as each new layer of foundation is added. The property is then ‘propped’ from underneath at its centre while this process proceeds and the whole project, from planning permission to finish, is likely to take up to a year, according to Billy Heyman. Another area where homeowners must do their homework is to pick the right contractor, and Douglas Brown says many project managers don’t help their clients do robust enough due diligence. “There are some projects which are more complex than some builders’ abilities so it’s sometimes better to separate the contacts and use a specialist for the belowground work and a more general builder for the other work,” says Simon Haycock. But if you can get it right then the benefits are more than just aesthetic. Trevor Abrahamson, of estate agent Glentree, says that while it costs around £300 per foot² to build a basement, it can add between £1000 and £6000 per foot² to the value of the property. u

ome people might use a stair-lift to get from one floor to the other, but Kew House has a fun slide to get its owners downstairs super-quick. This modern home – one of the finalists in Grand Designs: House of the Year in 2015 – has a huge basement which includes a children’s play area that you can get down to on stairs or a wooden slide. The site was originally a bunch of derelict garages before it was bought by award-winning structural engineer Tim Lucas six years ago for £400,000. The site’s transformation into a dream home now on the market for £3.8 million with The Modern House was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs in November 2015, and was also shortlisted for a Royal Institute of British Architects’ award, handed out each year to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. Set behind the façade of a Victorian stable, it has two gabled wings around a central courtyard. The property is covered with prefabricated steel, studded with holes to mimic the effect of dappled light through the branches of trees. The Modern House 020 3795 5920

But it’s clearly time to move on. Ellis’s home in Ascot is now up for sale. Hitchcock had a lot to thank the capital for; he directed over 20 films here DIAL M FOR MAISONETTE?
lfred Hitchcock has been dead for nearly 40 years but his reputation as one of the world’s greatest film directors survives very much intact. But the cigar-chomping mogul was not always grateful for his early years spent working in London, where he established himself before moving to Hollywood in 1939. The Dial M for Murder director once said that in London “the sky was always grey, the rain was grey, the mud was grey and I was grey”. Hitchcock had a lot to thank the capital for; he directed over 20 films here, using familiar backdrops such as Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. But who could blame him for preferring the Californian sun, where he worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Janet Leigh. While living in Los Angeles Hitchcock developed a taste for grand residences and eventually bought a seven-bedroom colonialstyle mansion in Bel Air. But when living in London his home was much more modest. From 1926 until 1939 he lived in a shabby maisonette flat

After surviving the war, Wisdom’s talents for comic entertainment were spotted and by 31 he was a professional entertainer and soon after, a film star and comedian. His most famous character was Norman Pitkin, an incompetent junior employee to boss ‘Mr Grimsdale’ in a variety of different settings, which won Wisdom fans all over the world including, most improbably, Albania. His childhood home is now for sale. It’s at 91 Fernhead Road in Maida Vale where the Wisdom family lived during the 1920s. Norman, his brother Fred and their parents, lived in a single room. hen Dr Who launched during the 1960s there were fears that a science fiction drama wouldn’t be popular and the first episode was discreetly advertised in the Radio Times. But, despite an opening night that clashed with coverage of the JFK assassination, Doctor Who was a hit, and half a century later there’s still great excitement. It’s just been announced that this year’s festive outing will feature a guest companion, ahead of next year’s new series. PEDDER COMMUNITY PROMISE Thurlby Road

Street Party, 17 September
hen I approached Pedder in June about the possibility of advertising our Street Party in September on their estate agent boards, they couldn’t have been more helpful. It was very obvious to see that they care about the local community and the fact that they would pay £15 per board in the street meant that we could make our street party an event to remember. The boards were put up two weeks before the event, with our street party clearly advertised Ω it certainly turned heads as it looked as though the whole street were moving. Once the boards were up, the money was released and we were able to buy shrubs, decking and slate for our morning Freshview event (building planters and decking frames around tree bases). The street then went on and had a street
party in the afternoon. The hire of the bouncy castle and event style wristbands were also only possible thanks to Pedder’s commitment to helping the local community. The boards were taken down a week after the event Ω I was a little sad to see them go. It was a truly fantastic day where neighbours ate, drank and socialised with each other. It was a first for Thurlby Road but after its success, thanks to Pedder, it won’t be the last. u LUCY CLIFF • Thurlby Road Street Party Organiser
