Editor’s LETTER
I
It would be dishonest to say that we're actually feeling at all Christmassy at this point. When you have been looking at pictures of advent calendars and baubles since July, and when your first mince pie was months ago, it's easy to be blasé about the whole thing. And since we've barely recovered from Halloween, it seems a bit much to muster up any enthusiasm quite yet. But as December draws nearer and decorations appear, the actual reality of Christmas will take over. In this issue we cover gift ideas that range from classic candles to luxe ski jackets, from hampers full of treats to gadgets for geeks. We investigate fizz and advise on sourcing your turkey, while seeking out the baubliest baubles and the best gifts for tinies. All this, and we also meet designer Orla Kiely to discuss things completely unrelated to Christmas, enjoy a stay on a canal boat and taste squirrel in EC1. (Yes, that kind of squirrel. It's delicious, and though the season's finished now, there's lots of game at this Barbican destination). We hope you enjoy the magazine. And a very merry Christmas to all our readers. ◆

Midcentury Matter Orla Kiely, queen of the nostalgic print, introduces her whimsical new fashion collection, L’Orla Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e
PENDLE HARTE: Tell us about L’Orla. What inspired it? ORLA KIELY: L’Orla is a way of developing ideas that otherwise might be too whimsical for our mainline collection. It was inspired initially as a creative collaboration between our long time stylist and Violet magazine editor Leith Clark and myself. When it comes to fashion, we are kindred spirits as we both have a love for all things 60s and 70s. PH: Which are your favourite pieces from the L’Orla collection? OK: That is a tricky question, as I love them all for different reasons, but I especially love our floral embroideries developed with expert weavers. The results are incredibly beautiful and the dresses are magic. The lace knits are also very pretty. It is hard to choose. PH: How does the second collection build on the first? OK: For the L’Orla collection this season we have been inspired by 70s Laura Ashley, the effortless romantic spirit of Celia Birtwell and classic American brand Gunne Sax. Our L’Orla ladies are Shelley Duvall, one of the quintessential 70s beauties, and Mary Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie, who was light years ahead in her layering and style. With these inspirations we have designed

our most feminine collection to date, with special floral embroideries on silk organza dresses and printed ditzy florals on Italian baby corduroy dungarees. Lurex knit scallop-patterned necklines combined with cashmere sweaters. Playing with contrasting prints make for a modern day romantic spirit. PH: You have been involved in lots of collaborations. Are there any more to come? OK: We have been incredibly lucky to work with some great partners on different projects. We are continually developing something special.
PH: You’re known as much for your homewares as your fashion. Which is closer to your heart? OK: Orla Kiely – the company – developed from a passion for mid-century design and print. This has informed all aspects of our product, from the ready-towear collections, fragrance, beauty, handbags, watches, jewellery, homewares, wallpapers and more. My style has always remained clean, simple, measured, bold and brave, evolving each year with new designs and distinctive prints. It's about capturing a new spirit each season, which speaks to women everywhere. For me, it is this complete picture we create that I love, the way our customer lives her life, through our love of colour and pattern, we reinvent the every day, and make it a little more special. PH: You have spoken out against consumer excess. Do you think we should all stop shopping? OK: No, we should not stop shopping but we should definitely be more selective and considered when buying something. It should be functional and beautiful, which I always keepO in mind when designing a product. PH: You have previously mentioned your childhood kitchen as an inspiration. What was it like?

SHELLEY DUVALL: 'ONE OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL 70S BEAUTIES'
My inspirations will always be FIRMLY BASED IN THE 50s, 60s & 70s PH: What other interiors do you admire? OK: I am devoted to beautiful mid-century interiors and wrote a book dedicated to the subject, called Home. My favourite houses are featured, such as Seigel House in Nottingham, Scheer House, Vila Bendvold and Brabrand House in Denmark are quite remarkable in their design and simplicity. PH: As a mother, how do you find time to combine your work and home life? OK: My two sons are young men now and studying at university, but while they were growing up, it was a tricky balance. Having the right support made things much easier. It was a team effort, always a joy. PH: Childrenswear seems to be missing from your collections. Are there any plans for that? OK: You never know what might be around the corner!
ORLA KIELY
OK: Growing up in Ireland in the 1970s had a great influence on my creative vision. My 1950s modernist family home, my mother’s great style, the area we lived in Dublin, just two minutes from the beach, close to the greenest fields and the mountains too. All this natural beauty and modernist style influenced my taste for colour and design. PH: There’s a lot of nostalgia in your designs. Why is that? OK: My inspirations will always be firmly based in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Those were times of great films, innovative design in all fields and, of course, the unforgettable music that remains so influential to this day.

'MARY INGALLS FROM LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE WAS LIGHT YEARS AHEAD IN HER LAYERING AND STYLE'
PH: Can you tell us about the house you live in? Is it filled with your own designs? OK: I live in south London with my husband and my two dogs Olive and Ivy, my home has a very mid-century aesthetic. I have combined vintage furniture from fairs with products we have made. Our wallpaper prints, cushions and a special mohair blanket are to be found in the living room. In the kitchen our tableware adds something special at dinner times, and our towels in the bathrooms add some extra colour and pattern to everyday life. u

ashmere is top of everyone's wish list at this time of year, and newcomer Delam is a luxe knitwear boutique with a global story. All yarns are Italian – the finest cashmere – and the dyes are Iranian. Ancient techniques applied to tribal Gabbeh rugs are used to create organic colours with an irregularity in appearance that delivers a collage effect, making each piece unique. The dyes come from native plants and roots such as pomegranate skin; the yarns are hand-dyed and left to dry in the sun in Iran before being sent

back to Italy for knitting. 'Each piece is as unique as the person wearing it,' says Delam founder Lili Di Michele. The colours are subtle yet rich – all intriguing shades named things like Sumac Red and Walnut Brown, while sweaters and cardigans come in stylish shapes. There are bell sleeves, various different cuffs, flattering hems and lots of feminine designs, all reworking the traditional sweater. Delam - meaning 'my heart' promises to 'tell stories through colour' and these luxurious pieces will capture hearts in London and beyond. u delamlondon.com

ealthy eating and early nights are all very well, but your actual chances of ageing well lie in your DNA. This is the position taken by Geneu, which produces skincare designed specifically to work with your unique combination of genes. 60% of skin ageing is inherited, they say, leaving just 40% to be influenced by lifestyle. Free radicals, apparently, are chemicals produced in response to environmental factors and they can be thwarted by natural defences found in our cells known as antioxidants. Meanwhile, our natural collagen resources are degraded over time by our DNA. Geneu has devised a special DNA test and questionnaire, involving a swab and a few (not too intrusive) lifestyle questions, in order
60% of skin ageing is INHERITED, they say, and JUST 40% DOWN TO LIFESTYLE
to determine an individual's unique skincare requirements. My results? Amazing, actually. For one, I am deemed to be 'living a healthy lifestyle', and furthermore my 'antioxidant protection enzyme is exceptionally active.' This doesn't let me off the hook, however. I still need products, and my bespoke personalised serums arrive in a stylish gunmetal dispenser case, with instructions on how to combine them, and now, a few weeks on, I am certainly noticing a difference. ◆

THE PONYTAIL
This style has managed to work its way onto the red carpet, so it is definitely a hot look for any Christmas party hair style. There are many different ways to wear a ponytail – my two favourites are sleek and messy. Simple does not mean boring as I demonstrated on Adriana Lima, with the sleek back look I created on her for Cannes Film Festival 2016. 2

THE UPDO
The updo is a perfect option for medium to long hair. With an array of many style variations, from stylish oversized buns to a tousled braid for a loose hair up style. For the wow factor, vamp up the glamour with a plaited updo, just like Paris Hilton, pictured here holding her Studio M.A loyalty card. 3
CURLS AND WAVES
Versatile and stylish, this look can be adapted to suit almost any hair type or length. Here Milla Jovovich goes all-out red carpet glamour with her short tousled waves. 4

CONFIDENTIAL West London’s food news and delicious things to see you through December Wo r d s P E A R L B OY D
A GREAT MATCH Wine and food pairings for Christmas B y J a n e Pa r k i n s o n
CHICKEN LIVER PARFAIT ith a pâté so decadent in flavour and with a smooth dense t exture the most successful pairing is a fresh and fruity wine with a very (very) light touch of sweetness. This New Zealand white is perfect because its juicy pear flavours and crispness cut through the flavour and texture of the parfait brilliantly. u ● Kumeu River Pinot Gris 2014 £11.99, majestic.co.uk
W
TURKEY WITH TRIMMINGS he family favourite Christmas dinner is a rich combination of flavours including bacon, cranberry, stuffing and gravy, so a ripe red is best. France’s Rhône Valley has these in abundance. This one is made with the Syrah grape and has a beautiful peppery spice to lift the elegant layers or red and black fruit. u ● Alain Graillot Crozes Hermitage 2013 £22.50, yapp.co.uk
T
STILTON intage Port with Stilton is one of the all-time wine and food greats. Blue cheese is incredibly potent, so the wine pairing needs to be sweet and full-flavoured if it has any chance of not getting lost. This is from a classic producer and is at a delicious drinking stage now with dark black fruit, clove, star anise and chocolate flavours. u ● Warre’s 2000 £45.75 leaandsandeman.co.uk

JUGGED HARE Wo r d s a m a n d a c o n s ta n c e
e went to the Jugged Hare to eat squirrel. Yes, the sweet fluffy thing, answers to the name Nutkin. The Jugged Hare is a gastropub in the Barbican that is red in tooth and claw. From August to February, that means it’s game on for all things furred and feathered to be roasted, braised, basted and jugged. In these clean eating times it felt naughty to go somewhere so unashamedly meaty and the sheer chutzpah of the menu, combined with mounted display cases of stuffed game birds and hares, made me want to don some tweed and shout ‘Phwoar!’ at my fellow diners. We started with braised squirrel from the wilds of Yorkshire. We had a shoulder, leg and loin braised with hazelnut sauce, mash and roast kale. The sight of a knobbly squirrel spine climbing out of my mash was a bit Alien, but that didn’t stop me. The meat is like nutty rabbit, or muddy chicken. I far preferred my panfried scallops with black pudding croquettes and cauliflower puree; one of food’s perfect partnerships. For main I had roast grouse, game chips, savoy cabbage, bread sauce and rotisserie gravy. My husband had roast woodcock which came with the head and beak neatly spliced in half and a teaspoon for him to eat the brains – he proclaimed them much like chicken liver parfait. My dark chocolate cheesecake pudding was delicious but bore no relation to its name. If you want to release you inner carnivore, the Jugged Hare is the place to go. u

f you haven’t already been to this incredibly trendy North London eaterie, then you have at least heard of it. Based around the idea of a Chinese family meal, the restaurant itself is narrow and intimate with busy wallpaper and mismatched chairs. The tables range from small two-seaters to long group tables to create a feeling of community and family – as does the menu. Everything is designed to share and we decide on about six dishes between us to really get the full experience. We start with the sweet basil chicken popcorn which is crispy and tender all at the same time and follow it with deliciously crunchy Gan Bian fine green beans – these have a sprinkle of dried chili giving them just enough kick. We also order some sticky rice and one of
the lightest, fluffiest steamed buns I have ever tasted. We are then recommended the Mei Cai Kou Rou (the thrice cooked pork belly) which is melt-in-the mouth and delicately flavoured with shiitake and dried shrimp and the Ma La lobster tail on Bing. Bing is a kind of cross between a pancake and a tortilla and this particular one comes wrapped around a succulent lobster tail, smothered in a spicy sauce and with a small heap of caviar. This reviewer was too much of a coward to try the Century Egg (look it up and you’ll understand why) but having just tasted some of the best Chinese food this side of Beijing, I will definitely be back soon to give it a try.

n the edge of the New Forest National Park stands Peppa Pig World: a theme park within a theme park (it’s hosted by Paulton’s Family Park) dedicated to every toddler’s favourite wholesome hog. Rides and attractions will be semi-familiar to anyone who’s ever watched an epsiode or a hundred of the Peppa Pig TV show, with names like George’s Dinosaur Adventure, the Windy Castle Ride and Peppa Pig’s Balloon. You can even play at jumping in muddy puddles, meet Mummy and Daddy Pig and visit Grandma and Grandpa Pig’s house – and of course, there’s a toy shop full of Peppa goodies too. All told, it’s a sweet and innocent way to spend a day and kids will lap it up; more importantly, it’s hardly a couple of hours’ drive from London. And if you’re not too tired out by all that pigginess? You could always take a walk in the New Forest – you might spot some real porkers snuffling about. Sow amazing.

t’s almost impossible to describe how bizarre a cruise around the archipelago of Galápagos really is. Unlike a jungle safari or rainforest trek, the animals here are like actors, ready and waiting for their audience to arrive. Step off the speedboat onto one of these deserted islands, and within seconds you’re standing in between a sea lion and marine iguana, neither of them at all affected by the dozens of cameras pointed in their direction. With less than 250,000 people visiting the archipelago each year, this is the trip of a lifetime and it doesn’t disappoint with impossibly white sands, turquoise seas and black lava rock setting the scene for even more incredible animals. With many islands uninhabited by humans, it’s easy to believe you’re the first to walk the unspoiled land and discover what Metropolitan Touring like to call the Galapagos Big 15 (see sidebar). As the original inspiration behind Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, explained in revolutionary work The Origin of Species,

the volcanic islands are a constant source of mystery and intrigue for naturalists and tourists alike. As a result, days spent aboard the Santa Cruz II ship start early with a 7am wake up call Ω unheard of while on holiday Ω but setting an earlier alarm to watch the giant sun rise up from the sea is a good idea. While the landscape is beautiful it’s the wildlife people come to see. While some of the animals are endemic to a particular island Ω such as the world’s only flightless cormorant that can only be found on Fernandina and Isabela Ω sea lions in Galapagos are so common the locals calls them dogs. Swimming with the adults and their pups around Santa Fé, however, is something I’ll never forget. Resurfacing from pacific, I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face - until I looked back down. There, right below me, were two white-tipped sharks. Even though they’re completely harmless, their jaws-like silhouette still took my breath away. Thankfully for those who can’t bare the thought of swimming in the depths of the ocean, the Santa Cruz II has its own glass bottom boat so no one misses out.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST Plaza San Francisco in the Historic Center, the mansion begins to feel like an extremely lovely second home. From here we flew to Baltra airport before boarding the Santa Cruz II. After four nights out at sea, we arrived at the Finch Bay Hotel which was a welcome return to dry land. This chic ecolodge is set on the beachfront of Puerto Ayora and has the most incredible pool so we made the most of the opportunity to relax and happily sat poolside with a mojito in hand. This is the way to travel for sure. While there’s no denying the entire trip was luxurious Ω with giant beds, wifi and a seemingly endless supply of pisco throughout Ω those onboard the Santa Cruz II still made it feel like we were one of the first to visit the archipelago. After all, isn’t that the point? To step into Charles Darwin’s shoes and experience it all as he found it in 1535. u

Back on land, the flat places of Española are particularly special. As the sole breeding ground for the entire population of the world’s waved albatross we stumbled across three of the giant birds performing their mating dance. Famed for their hilarious drunken waddle and intricate mating ritual, we watched on as we the male clacked beaks with both females; evidently the albatross men are just as indecisive as their human counterparts. The views found at Española are also the best with black lava rock and jagged cliffs creating a prehistoric landscape like nothing else. No sooner than we sat down on the rocks, a blowhole erupted in front of us; it seems there is no end to the wonders of Galápagos.
Ecuadorian food highlights include lapingacho (fried potato cakes made with quesillo cheese, cooked on the griddle till golden, and served with chorizo and avocado). These are so good we’d rush to breakfast in hope that they were waiting but alas, they were a one-time thing. For lunch, the hearty locro soup is must-eat national dish. The warming and delicious potato stew is a classic corn, bean and potato soup that you top with avocado, cilantro and cancha corn nuts. To experience all Ecuador and the Galápagos have to offer, you logistically need nine days. We flew in to Quito and stayed in the beautiful 5* boutique hotel Casa Gangotena for two nights. ired of staying in hotels? Has Airbnb lost its lustre? Here's the perfect solution: spend a night on a boat. Gainsborough Wharf on Regent’s Canal is home to two beautiful canal boats named Osbert and The Palmer. The former sleeps up to four while the latter is a more cosy proposition designed for two, but both are thoughtfully and tastefully decorated. For our night on the water we were put up in Osbert, whose interiors team decadent faux furs thrown over the chairs with a deep blue sofa and slate grey walls. It is also peppered with eccentric objets d’art including a leopard head vase and teacup spelling out the word ‘GIN’.

lthough Gainsborough Wharf rubs shoulders with Islington and Shoreditch, it remains a little island of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of London. Few things are as peaceful as waking up, looking out of a porthole and seeing a family of ducks swim by. I would recommend signing up for the supplementary breakfast which is placed in a lovely hamper in the boat before your arrival. Sitting on the deck or in the kitchen eating bacon, eggs, yoghurt and granola while waving at passing boats is a seriously idyllic way to spend a Sunday morning.
T
hough tempted by the lure of Shoreditch, the bottle of champagne in the fridge and the gourmet snacks on offer (many of which come from local producers) mean we choose a night in instead, listening to LPs on the record player, sitting on the top deck drinking wine and, eventually, watching a film on the projector in the bedroom. However, those wishing to stray from their floating accommodation can follow the lovely hand-drawn map provided to many fantastic local restaurants such as The Gate Islington or Arepa & Co nearer Dalston.
THE DAMAGE Nightly rates on Osbert and The Palmer starts from £180 on a B&B basis.

ABSOLUTELYWhat sets Roselind Wilson Design apart from other luxury interior designers in London? RW Our brilliant team is one of our greatest USPs. We distinguish ourselves from other luxury interior designers by our ability to adapt to all levels. In addition to this, our clients always feed back to us that the process is not only professional but fun from start to finish. Refurbishing or redesigning one’s home can be extremely stressful and we aim to make the process pleasant and smooth. We are passionate designers and always maintain a professional level on all projects – but we keep it light too so that we can all have fun along the way.
focuses on clean lines, earthy and natural tones and the use of big expanses of glass to capitalise on the views. Influences in interior design use these architectural features as a backdrop to uncluttered spaces with sharp lines in furnishings and natural tones in fabrics, layered with textural accessories. In addition there is a strong trend towards linens and loose cover sofas and chairs to showcase a more relaxed lifestyle.
ABSOLUTELY: How do your South African roots influence the way you approach interior design? RW: Growing up in South Africa with its warm climate, sunny weather, blue skies and abundance of natural light, architecture
and contemporary pieces, textured rugs and wall finishes, raw timber accessories and certainly no fear to use colour, whether muted or bold but always in the right proportions.

holistic view
Fundamentally the main difference is the space, with an abundance in South Africa and more conservative sized rooms in the UK. A love of textural surfaces, finishes and fabrics forms the basis for all my schemes and my past influences have resulted in developing my own personal style characterised by an eclectic mix of classic

ABS Which room are you most excited about when remodelling a house? RW I’m always most excited about the look and feel of the whole house and the continuous flow. I never look at the design in isolation but rather take a holistic view of the space. Still, I feel that the kitchen is such a diverse room with the possibility of such exciting textures and finishes. To make it feel both functional and homely makes it an exciting design task. ABS What would you most like to see trending or revived in interior design RW I am a huge fan of wicker and woven materials and would love to see the craft of weaving revived so that we incorporate more woven elements into furniture. roselindwilsondesign.com

ver the years I can safely say that most of the best estate agents I have met have become one by chance rather than design and I too fall into that category. When I think back to my early days in the industry, the prospect of getting a mobile phone, a car and a salary on top was all too tempting an opportunity to miss! Eighteen years later, I still remember my first days in an office thinking ‘how great is this… I can get paid to look at some amazing houses and talk about it all day long’. The industry has changed dramatically, the knowledge and technology available to both buyers and sellers are now questioning the very essence of our people-based business. There are any number of internet-only businesses out there offering to sell or rent your property. However, I am convinced that the prospect of marketing, discussing, negotiating and getting the best price possible for your most valuable asset is unlikely to come from just a flat screen. Our business here
Regeneration across the length and breadth of Islington has dramatically improved the local offerings
at Knight Frank is about being passionate about property and professional in everything we do and as I often say ‘If it’s not broken, don’t fix it’. Colleagues have accused me over the years of being a bit of a technology ‘dinosaur’, and they have to put up with answering the same question at least three times. We now have the very best of both worlds. On the subject of change, it’s not just the way we do things but also what we are selling. It wasn’t so long ago that if you wanted to buy a new flat, you might have found it a bit tricky, but now the options are broad and varied with everything possible from fantastic roof top penthouses with swimming pools to bijou studio apartments. I have often wondered about the impact of all these immaculate
new homes with smart technology, porters, gyms, cinemas and everything else you could desire, as they seem to be setting the benchmark for future standards of property development. How far can it go and what will the landscape look like in the next 100 years? These properties do provide a superb alternative to the well-loved period properties, and the borough has indeed become more eclectic in recent years. I think this has been due to area continuing to perform extremely well regarding property price growth when compared with the well-known ‘golden postcodes’ of the West End which have seen negative percentage changes in recent times (Islington 12 month price growth from August 2015-2016: 3.6%). In terms of the housing stock investment in the local area reais quite staggering. Although everyone may not welcome it, I have no doubt that the continued regeneration across the length and breadth of Islington has dramatically improved the local offerings regarding shopping, recreation and general public realm which is beneficial for all.

olk-rock band Mumford and Sons’ second studio album, Babel, has so far been their most successful one topping the charts in both the UK and the US last year and selling over two million copies. But where was the front cover shot? The four founders of the band Ω Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane – all chose to pose in Charles Baker Place, a former mixed use site in Wandsworth, SW London. But the band might not recognise it now. Developer Chester Row has moved in and is renovating the existing Victorian buildings and constructing new homes as well. Dedicated Mumford & Sons fans can snap up the properties now for sale including three bedroom cottages, four bedroom mews houses and five bedroom townhouses. Prices at the development start at £1.175m and rise to £2.7m for the larger properties. u For more information visit: charlesbakerplace.com or call Knight Frank on 020 8682 7777.

flesh, and such ethical undercurrents have helped make the series a huge hit both in the UK and in the US. Locations where it has been filmed include the City’s Barbican Estate as well as in Elephant & Castle, Bethnal Green, Waterloo Station, Shoreditch and Docklands. The climax of series three was shot on a rooftop terrace within Keybridge, a large new apartment development being built near Vauxhall by developers FABRICA and Mount Anvil. When completed it will be the tallest residential block in the UK and includes 260 apartments. Prices start at £575,000 for a studio. u For more information visit: keybridgelondon.com or call Knight Frank on 020 7861 5445.

Despite this success Phyllis Dorothy James worked almost all her life in the civil service and for many years she lived at this property in Notting Hill although she also had homes in Suffolk and Oxford. Her London home is now for sale through agent Marsh & Parsons for £2.5m and is where, during the 1960s, she first began writing. u For more information visit: marshandparsons.co.uk or call Marsh & Parsons on 020 7368 4450.

OSCAR’S WILD BUT EARNEST APARTMENT
t is now 121 years since The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde’s most famous play, was first performed. And it remains popular to this day. The plot focusses on how far young artistic Victorians would go to escape the era’s suffocating social mores and was set among a group of louche friends living in central London. The play opens in the home of its central

HARPENDEN HOME OF X-FACTOR
-Factor is back in all its glory with former judges Sharon Osborne and Louis Walsh returning to their seats alongside Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger. The show is hoping to revive its fortunes after viewing figures sank to an all-time low of 7.85 million an episode last year, at least a million behind rival Strictly Come Dancing. X-Factor may have a good chance of catching up. As well as an interesting set of initial auditions including boyband 5am, Dermot O’Leary is to return to the show

after quitting in 2014 after reportedly signing an £8 million deal with ITV. And another aspect of X-Factor is also revived – the house where the successful contestants hang out while they cling on to hopes of making to the final but inevitably fall by the wayside. In 2014 it was this four-floor mansion on Lancaster Avenue in Hadley Wood, Hertfordshire which has eight bedrooms, six reception rooms, a conservatory plus large garden and a swimming pool. It was home to the contestants including Ben Haenow, who won against Fleur East. The property is also where Simon Cowell held his 55th birthday and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, who has now left the show, surprised Cowell with a birthday cake. If you’re willing to rent a family home with this sort of X-Factor pedigree, then local agent Savills Harpenden (01582 465004) says the property is available to rent at £13,000 PCM. u For more information call: Savills, Harpenden on 01582 465004.

alf a century ago the last place many wealthy Londoners wanted to live in was central London. Bombed out streets and a reputation for ‘pea soup’ fogs persuaded many to flee to the suburbs and, even better, the emerging garden towns. But over the past 20 years this trend has been turned on its head. Central London is now world famous for its luxury homes and prime prices as both UK and overseas buyers fight over the capital’s central neighbourhoods. So which are the most sought after? Look online and the internet is awash with advice on where to live. But let’s be honest, they’re based on opinion, not fact; one person’s neighbourhood nirvana can be another’s least likely locality. How therefore do you find out if Mayfair is more sought after than Marylebone, Clapham more popular than Chelsea and whether Peckham has a steal on Paddington these days? One organisation that knows the answer is Google. Every week thousands of us search for homes, property, houses and apartments in London. And if you work in the digital economy, you’ll know Google tracks who searches for what. I logged on to find out the most popular searched-for areas during September. u

GOOGLE SEARCHES Where are London’s most searched for areas?
1. Islington
2. Fulham
Why so popular? Famed for many years as THE fashionable haunt of London’s political set, it has been a prosperous area since the early 19th century. Today the borough covers areas including Kings Cross, Angel, Clerkenwell, Highgate and Tufnell Park, where Ed Miliband lives.
Why so popular? This family-friendly bulge of neighbourhoods has been a sought-after haunt of lawyers, advertising executives and media stars for over 30 years. But its areas still reflect the original villages that once dotted the landscape including Fulham Town, Parsons Green, Walham Green, North End and Sands End, although

including such famous land-owning families such as the Burlingtons, Berkeleys, Curzons and Grosvenors all of whom are reflected in the names of its squares and roads.
4. Richmond
6. Victoria
Why so popular? Residents of Richmond might be surprised to know that the town was named by Henry VII after his favourite and eponymous earldom in Yorkshire, or to use his spelling, Rychemonde, and that is is where both he and later royals liked to escape London’s smoke. Not much has changed on that front, and Richmond and its fabulous deer park are still prized by London commuters and their families, particularly the roads around Richmond Hill and The Green.
Why so popular? Few people realise the area around Victoria station was, until Thomas Cubitt got his teeth into it during the 1840s and 1850s, a swampy and dangerous place most famous for its brewery and abbey. Such affiliations were banished when the area was extensively rebuilt by the Grosvenor Estate and Buckingham Palace extended, among other improvements.

Why so popular? Wandsworth Town is quickly being revamped as a plethora of new luxury developments pop up, and the town centre may soon join its surrounding commons as a prime area of London. But this is all a very new development. From the 14th century until very recently

Why so popular? Mayfair may be a small patch of central London but what it lacks in size it makes up for in fame and luxury. To own a home within the W1 postcode requires the deepest of pockets and rightly so – not only is it a residential area in the heart of London but it also contains elements of the capital’s greatest estates
