ost people are content to excel at one thing. Then there are those who put all the rest of us to shame. Neisha Crosland is one such person, having become a beacon of originality and vibrancy in the world of interiors and textiles and, much more recently, as an author, too. This September will see the London local’s book Life of a Pattern in print, providing an insight into her design process and inspirations, from the wrong turn in the V&A that inspired her career to her stepfather Roald Dahl’s profound influence. Read our interview with her on page 10. Now the sun finally has his hat on, its probably time to ditch those old Ray Bans and invest in a lovely pair of sunnies. Luckily, OCO has opened up

in Spitalfields offering a range of statement-making designer frames. We caught up with Adam and Jennie, the brother and sister team behind the boutique on page 25. Our Beauty Confidential this month includes a round-up of the best clay masks to make your complexion picture perfect for summer snaps, while our fashion pages are crammed with ‘big bag’ inspiration, so you can carry your sun cream, big floppy hat and flats in style. I hope you have a wonderful August and thank you for reading. Ciao! ◆

MAKING SHAPES Revered textiles and rug designer Neisha Crosland can now add author to her résumé. Absolutely caught up with her W o r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s Book photography Misha Anikst

CATHERINE HALES: What inspired you to write ‘Life of a Pattern’? NEISHA CROSLAND: I moved studio five years ago, and while clearing and sorting out my archives I noticed not only that there were many recurring themes in my work but that the sources of inspiration behind the designs also had interesting stories. I like to think of pattern as a link to the past; as with a good story, it gets passed down through the ages. I wanted the book to be a visual narrative in which, to quote Misha Anikst, the book’s designer and photographer, ‘the designs must leap out of the page and grab attention’. I wanted to create a book as a homage to all of the things that have influenced me. CH: Why did you decide to become a designer of textiles? NC: A missed turn in the V&A on my way to a lecture found me in the Ottoman galleries and I knew immediately that I wanted to do textiles. Despite their age, the bold, rich graphics on velvet and silk looked so utterly modern. CH: What is your design process? NC: I have a pin board where I pin all of my sources of inspiration – everything from a ribbon or postcard, to a photograph of a painting or ceramic, or

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

I WANTED TO create a book AS AN HOMAGE to all the things THAT HAVE INFLUENCED ME even just a doodle; seemingly random pictures of things that have caught my eye. I also write notes and pin them on the board. I then live with these inspirations until I get an urge to do something with them. I start to sketch some ideas roughly in a sketchbook and

I find that it really helps to give them names at this point. The ideas will join up with each other and evolve or just get edited out; it’s a survival of the fittest or best idea! When I’m confident that I’m on to something I’ll map it out life-size – not computer screen size – in black and white or pencil since it’s important to get the structure of a design correct before I start colouring it. CH: How would you define your style? NC: I’ve been told it’s quite deco. I try to make my designs as minimal as possible with maximum impact, a discipline that maybe comes from the pre-digital days when every colour in a design cost money. I think the way I design is also inspired by my admiration for Ottoman and Japanese design, and the abstract art of the Russian Avant-garde. ‘Minimum line with maximum impact’ is my mantra. CH: You often mention the V&A; is it your favourite spot in London? NC: Well, I owe the V&A my calling to textiles. I spent a lot of time there as a student, not only in the textile galleries but also among the ceramic collections and in the wrought iron metalwork galleries where I liked the black and white, positive/negative aspect of the metalwork.

matter how gorgeous the colours are. It’s also important to have an understanding of how the design will work on the end product since you can’t just plonk a pattern on something. You need to understand the medium and how the design will look, whether it’s upholstered onto a chair, decorating a fine china cup, flat on the floor for a rug, or draped around the neck in the form of a scarf.

CH: Are there any patterns in nature that particularly influence your work? NC: I find inspiration in everything from the checks on fritillaries and the shape of giant gunnera leaves, to ferns, ginkgo leaves, shells, malachite and coral. The photographer Horst P. Horst’s book Patterns from Nature and Karl Blossfeldt’s Art Forms in Nature have inspired me too. CH: What makes a successful pattern or textile? NC: A well-balanced repeat, combined with a scale that works. Ideally the colouration should be a surprise too. Good drawing is essential otherwise the design will always be unattractive no

11 SW_Aug2016_NesihaCrosland.indd 11

CH: Are there any other designers you admire? NC: I admire a wide range of designers spanning different eras, from current designers such as Georgina Von Etzdorf and Marthe Armitage, to Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher for their 1930s textiles, and the 18th century silk designers James Leman and Anna Maria Garthwaite. There are also so many designers who do wonderful things but remain anonymous. CH: Is there a particular place in the world that inspires your designs? NC: Many places inspire me but mostly from cultures long gone. For example, I take inspiration from everything from 16th century Japanese kimonos

XXXXXX / XXXXXXX and Mughal textiles and block prints, to Ottoman designs and Iznik pottery and ceramics in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. My influences also range from 18th century Spitalfield silks and Jacobean and Elizabethan blackwork, to Aztec and Inca feather pieces, African tribal art, 14th and 15th century Italian ecclesiastical textiles and early 20th century Russian revolution designs. The list goes on!

CH: What made you decide to add rugs to your collection? NC: The Rug Company approached me at a House & Garden fair about twelve years ago. I had designed an installation using my wallpaper on the floor under a sheet of perspex. Christopher Sharp, cofounder of The Rug Company, spotted it and asked me if I’d like to design rugs! Sea Thistle wallpaper, colour squid ink, Seven Park Place restaurant, St. James Hotel and Club, London, UK, Interior by Tony Filmer at Tully Filmer

CH: Are there any local haunts that you like to frequent? NC: I love Northcote Road for Dove the butcher, the fish stand, Hamish Johnston’s cheese shop and The Breadstall. Antica Bologna is perfect for lunch, The Birdhouse is a favourite for coffee and Chez Bruce is somewhere special for treat meals. CH: What do you like to do in your free time? NC: I love doing a lot of pottering in the garden and house, as well as visiting galleries, trips to the cinema and opera, cooking and seeing friends and family. Any chance to travel is welcome too! u Niall Clutton

CH: You speak very fondly of Camberwell College of Arts; was the school instrumental to your career? NC: Very much so. It taught me the process of getting a design from paper to cloth, the importance of drawing and of respecting the production process, whether it’s in a factory or by hand. That’s why I always like to stay close to the production process and to work with people who have the same approach, since a good design can so easily be ruined in the manufacturing. I find that it’s essential to have a say in how my designs are developed onto products – whether they’re rugs, tiles, wallpapers or fabrics – to ensure beautiful results.

CH: Did your stepfather Roald Dahl’s brilliant creativity feed into your own? NC: His love of the arts and the importance of inventing something to surprise people left a huge mark on me. He taught me that a different point of view is the only interesting point of view. My mother also instilled this in me, and she had a great eye for style and for the unusual. CH: How would you describe your Wandsworth house? NC: It’s an oasis that was once a working mews and a fly tip! We’ve made the garden the central focus, with french windows looking out onto it.

It’s the opposite of a strip-lit optician’s waiting room. The glasses are spaced out on wooden shelves and as I walk around trying on frames, Adam straightens them with care and precision. The venture began as an online business before manifesting

waiting room

as a physical shop located on Spitalfields’ Hanbury Street, rather going against the high street trend. Adam and Jennie’s parents have an optician’s practice and Jennie is also a qualified optometris but Adam appeared to buck the trend for a while by working in web development before surrendering to the family profession and going into business with his sister. The shop itself makes sense; it is home to a carefully curated selection of luxury brands that Jennie provides thoughtful and informative background to as we walk around. Downstairs are Adam’s computer and shelves and shelves full of stock. ‘We ship everything from here, there’s no warehouse,’ Adam informs me. He has created a

25 C&A_August16_OCO.indd 25

It’s the opposite of a STRIP-LIT

way of communicating with the shop upstairs via the computer to make their entire operation more efficient. Part of the system includes a small chute parallel to the stairs that allows Jennie to slide glasses down to him in the basement – as he demonstrates it, both he and I cannot restrain our childish glee. Though not quite finished by the time of my visit, Jennie will have a fully kitted out exam room in the back where she will be able to build a client base and dish out enviable pairs of specs. Before you know it all of Shoreditch will look a little better.◆ ocoglasses.co.uk

he City’s outpost of Shavata, Knightsbridge’s popular eyebrow expert, is located in House of Fraser next to Monument Station. It’s often busy, and although walk-ins are welcomed its a good idea to get an appointment. The Shavata idea – “brows are sisters, not twins” – express a philosophy that's immediately reassuring. Anyone who considers their non-identical eyebrows to be flawed will be cheered to discover that in brow lore, a lack of symmetry is not only to be expected, but actively celebrated. At Shavata, my neglected brows are threaded into nigh-twins without going against their grain. Swift, professional strokes and a gentle approach characterise the Shavata approach, which believes that eyebrows should relate to a face as a frame to an artwork, by complementing, not distracting from. With 25 years’ experience in the beauty industry, Shavata Singh is recognised as an authority on eyebrows and her studios can be found in branches of House of Fraser all over the UK. Having your brows tended to, she believes, is as effective as a mini-facelift. And it’s certainly true for me – a brief tint and reshape and my closely-related brows look well-defined while subtly improving my general appearance. Thank you, Shavata. ◆

HOUSE OF HO Modern Vietnamese cuisine in the heart of Fitzrovia Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n

n hindsight, inviting a Hongkonger to eat at House of Ho was risky. Could the Pan Asian fare cooked by the Northampton-born head chef ever truly compare to the proper dim sum Quan was bought up on? Well, his first, and only, negative comment was regarding the restaurant's decor; it's not traditional. However, this is hardly surprising as the whole idea is ‘modern Vietnamese’. Relocated from Soho to Fitzrovia, the restaurant has taken over all four floors of an old townhouse. Devoid of any cultural characteristics, marble and gold make the dining rooms an elegant, albeit slightly characterless, space to dine. The food, however, is the exact opposite. The first dish we order, the soft shell crab with Vietnamese sauces, is not only spicy, salty and sweet but crunchy yet tender, too. Served on an enormous bed of sea dried chillies, it turns heads as it comes toward us. The dumplings are up next and are so tasty we fight over the last Snow Crab and Scallop parcel. The final dish however, the shucking beef, steals the entire show. Seared to be pink, the tender meat has a dark oyster sauce and soy crust that makes it unbelievably succulent and tasty. I couldn't get enough of it but, more importantly, what did Quan think? "It's good but it tastes just like my Dad's." he said. "Yes," I replied, "that's the bloody point." Really well done Ho. 

Boundary

French fine dining off Shoreditch’s iconic Redchurch Street Wo r d s r ay s e a r l e

L

ocated off Shoreditch’s iconic Redchurch Street, Boundary provides an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of East London. The food and indeed the decor is French and errs on the traditional side, with exposed brick walls and glossy floor tiles that remind the diner of the building’s industrial past (it used to be a print factory). The open kitchen sheds light into the main restaurant as well as providing an entertaining glimpse into the culinary feats being performed behind the glass. After ordering our food from our attentive and knowledgeable server, we are introduced to the sommelier who takes us through Boundary’s award-winning wine list. It has recently been brought down from 800 worldwide wines to 500 Frenchonly selections and, when offered a wine pairing with each course, we can’t resist. We start with a glass of lovely full bodied champagne (Besserat de Bellefon Cuvée des Moines – Brut), paired with a flavourful

amuse bouche of scallops with white wine and sherry vinegar for me and smokey aubergine caviar with a trio of beets on flaky pastry for my partner who is vegetarian. This is swiftly followed by starters of creamy pea soup with horseradish cream, which lends it a hearty kick and crab with watercress and apple salad - a tarte and picquant combination. My fantastic main course is herb-crusted rack of lamb with roast fennel, peppers, courgettes, tomatoes and olives, washed down with Languedoc la Clape, Château de la Negly ‘’Brise Marine’’, which is truly delicious and we finish it off with a 10-yearold medium dry Verdelho Madeira. For dessert we share profiteroles, in a biscotti style pastry, which proves an interesting take on the original concept, with vanilla ice cream in a rich chocolate sauce. Fresh mint tea and whisky petit fours top off a delightful evening.  B O U N DA RY 2-4 Boundary Street, Shoreditch, E2 boundary.london

a Coqueta was founded by Spanish native (and London resident) Celia Munoz in 2012, and the brand's beautiful childrenswear is still designed in London and carefully crafted in Spain. The trademark style is a kind of Western European classicism, with vintage-inspired outfits – they make everything from rompers and party dresses to knitwear, swimwear and shoes – that wouldn't look out of place on Prince George and Princess Charlotte (or indeed their greatgrandparents, once upon a time). For all their old-school charm, however, the clothes remain resolutely versatile and practical: no unnecessary flounce or frippery here. O

ften those in search of a provincial Italian escape will yearn for Tuscany – its rolling hills, cypress trees and incomparably good food and wine a siren call for the inner epicurean. But with Tuscany becoming increasingly littered with tourists, there is an idyllic alternative: Umbria. As a result of popular Tuscany drawing the crowds, Umbria has preserved its rustic essence. But with a lesser-known location comes the apprehension of where to stay, and more importantly, what to do. So, where to for accommodation? Simple: Tenuta di Murlo.

WHERE TO STAY

T

wo hours’ drive from Rome Fiumicino airport are Tenuta di Murlo’s private grounds, which stretch thousands of hectares and have hosted famous visitors including Hugh Grant, Elton John, Colin Firth, George Lucas, Stephen Fry and Ralph Fiennes. Murlo’s mountainous ranges, covered in olive groves and oak forests, rivers, lakes and fields are bursting with wildlife and breathtakingly picturesque. And then you get to your villa. Or cottage. Either option is boutique travelling at its best. Among the five villas and two cottages Murlo’s service is unfailingly five star. Sure, it’s more of a self-contained set-up rather than a hotel (although plans are already underway for a Four Seasons development), but the home-style living with hotel-

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

like amenities complements the estate’s natural surrounds, with more than enough character to satiate your appetite for Italian grandeur. Medieval castle views, anyone? Check. How about infinity pools? Or fully equipped contemporary kitchens? Double check. Murlo’s a contemporary blend of modern fixtures and furnishings with traditional architecture dating back to the 14th century. At Villa Santa Croce you also benefit from 360-degree views in a stately three bedroom home atop Monte Santa Croce. With breakfast, dinner and barbecue terraces, a huge outdoor living area and sympathetically landscaped gardens (replete with hammock), relaxing will not be difficult. Villa Caminata comprises five bedrooms with a separate one-bedroom cottage and has over 3,000 blooms throughout the year. Accommodating up to 12 people, it’s the most traditional in terms of décor and is terrific for large groups with again, terraces aplenty for celebrating or feasting. Villa

Torre is a converted medieval defence tower and its roof terrace is a pretty terrific surprise, especially when accompanied by good company and wine. A dream for small families, it’s got two king-size bedrooms and one with two bunk beds, plus a lovely fireplace-fitted living room. Subtilia, however, is fantastic for large groups, considering its 18 guest capacity. There’s also a separate cottage by the pool, ideal for newlyweds, yet both 16th century properties are afforded direct views of Antognolla Castle and its championship golf course. Not forgetting San Savino, a four bedroom abode named after Saint Sabinus, Bishop of Spoleto, to whom the estate’s church (now sadly desecrated) was once dedicated. Fortunately, though, San Savino’s original terracotta floors and kitchen remain intact, with its wooden terrace serving as a brilliant observation deck. But a trip to Tenuta di Murlo is not all sitting and sipping wine while soaking in the atmosphere – there are ample activities to immerse yourself in too.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

WHAT TO DO

Y

ou’re in Italy. So, it’s only right to start with the most basic fundament of Italian life: food. The tastiest dishes you will ever try in your life can be found at Il Caldaro, Murlo’s on-site restaurant. Showcasing local suppliers, the produce is phenomenal, and what they do with it even better. Do not leave without experiencing the Burrata. In nearby Torgiano you can see the locals’ high-end interpretation of traditional rustic meals at Le 3 Vaselle. For those wanting to eat pasta they’ve made, in-villa cooking classes can be arranged with the estate’s professional chefs preparing a menu of dishes endemic to the area, such as Pumpkin, Sausage & Dill Tortelli and Vegetable Crêpe with Porcini Mushroom Sauce. If you want to take this a step further, you can personally ‘shop’ for your ingredients by hunting wild boar, pheasant, hare, fox and partridge, or foraging for truffles and wild asparagus.

As a result of TUSCANY drawing the crowds, UMBRIA has preserved its ESSENCE To find the perfect wine to pair with your creations, beeline to Lungarotti Winery. At the family-run vineyard there’s a plethora of certified white and red varieties, from light, crisp Pinot Grigios, Chardonnays and Trebbianos to full-bodied Sangoiveses, Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots and Rubsecos. But if you simply can’t choose, try them all at Lungarotti’s wine tasting, where you can tour the winery and discover the different drops from the owners themselves. Golf Course, which is only 20 minutes’ drive from Murlo. Alternatively, explore the vast Estate’s mountains, valleys and farmsteads with a hike and look forward to stunning sights, namely Lake Trasimene. If hiking doesn’t take your fancy, perhaps a safari of the local cashmere producers is more your kind of adventure. Be guided around the Umbrian Cashmere Road to Brunello Cucinelli’s flagship boutique in Solomeo, treat yourself at Lamberto Losani’s warehouse, and go inside Rocco Ragni’s Dominican monastery studio. Nearby Assisi, the birth place of Saint Francis, is pretty special and popular owing to its exquisite churches and sensational frescos to rival those in the Sistine Chapel. After soaking in Umbria’s fantastic culture, unwind in your villa with spa and beauty treatments organised by Murlo’s concierge service. Or have them simply make life easier by performing any errands you need to run or scheduling any activities you’d like to try. When it comes to experiencing Umbria through Tenuta di Murlo’s incredible facilities, you’ll quickly learn that anything is possible. u

TRAVEL / STAYCATION THE HOTEL

T

he Great Northern Hotel was first opened in 1854 during the golden age of steam and railways. It was designed by renowned Victorian architect Lewis Cubitt (who also designed King’s Cross Station) and retains its Grade II listed façade; the inside, however the epitome of understated luxury. Dark wood panelling and creamy leather banquettes reminiscent of an old fashioned first class compartment on a steam engine characterise the reception and the railway theme is carried artfully throughout the rest of the interiordesign. 

KING'S CROSS

am put up in a Cubitt room; this boasts views out over St. Pancras as well as elegant olive coloured walls offset by the walnut furniture. I am also delighted to discover a pantry just outside of my room which is fully stocked with cakes and tea of every description. Although a clear choice for travellers, the hotel has a romance and charm that makes it a perfect weekend getaway for couples. 

Wo r d s C AT H E R I N E H A L E S

THE RESTAURANT

P

lum + Spilt Milk is the hotel’s exceptional and stunningly designed restaurant; the brainchild of Mark Sargeant, it specialises in simple, seasonal fare, cooked creatively and is worth a visit in and of itself. I am lucky enough to go for dinner and am treated to tangy crab with avocado followed by tender, succulent Goosnargh chicken. For pudding I can’t resist the Plum + Spilt Milk, named after the restaurant: bittersweet plums served with a sugar-encrusted block of deep-fried milk custard. Heaven. 

THE AREA

K

ing’s Cross has undergone a wave of regeneration that has made it a destination not just for travellers. St Pancras itself is home to shops including Fortnum & Mason, Jo Malone and Whistles and the King’s Cross theatre is currently home to The Railway Children, a magical production for both adults and little ones alike. 

PER Westray HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS AREA?

I’ve lived in Victoria Park for nearly 20 years now and absolutely love it (does that make me a ‘local’?) But this is actually our first branch in east London. WHAT IS YOUR ETHOS?

To provide an exceptional service with honesty and integrity, supported by innovative and flexible marketing solutions. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PROPERTIES RIGHT NOW?

A gorgeous £2.4m Edwardian house in Wanstead village, blending old world charm with contemporary flourishes, and a cool Victorian conversion over-looking Victoria Park priced at £650,000. MARKET PREDICTIONS FOR THE COMING MONTHS?

Brexit’s full impact on the London sales market still remains to be seen. While there have been price reductions recently, appropriately priced properties are still selling well. ◆

Q&A WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT RECENTLY ABOUT THE LOCAL MARKET?

That it can change very quickly due to uncertainty, almost on a daily basis. A negative newspaper article can unsettle buyers and vendors which changes the mood and dynamics of a market. WHERE ARE YOU SEEING THE HIGHEST PRICE RISES AT THE MOMENT?

NEW BUILD

Prices are steady on the whole due to Brexit. There is a lot of talk of prices coming down but vendors are standing firm by in large as they are not desperate to sell and interest rates are low so they are not forced to.

ONTARIO TOWER • E •

£1,950,000 njoying breathtaking panoramic views towards Canary Wharf, the river Thames, O2 Arena and beyond is an incredible split-level penthouse apartment, boasting hotel-style living with concierge and the use of two communal gyms, swimming pool and spa facilities, two allocated underground parking spaces, lift access

and secure entry. There is also a vast reception room and high-specification open-plan kitchen with space for dining and a large master bedroom complete with fitted wardrobes and an en suite bathroom. ◆

Anywhere in East London. I understand the uncertainty but the way I see it most people will buy a property and live in it for at least two years. Mortgage borrowing is at an all-time low so buyers are in a great position to secure a property with less competition than the usually frantic east end market. ◆

IN THEIR OWN

WORDS

Alex Broadfoot SALES MANAG ER

Stirling Ackroyd, Dalston

REBECCA NOONAN

I

was born in Germany but spent my childhood growing up between Scotland and Kenya. German, Invernesian and Swahili have yet to come in useful in Dalston, but my LinkedIn profile looks great. And, when it comes to multi-lingual opportunities (those limited to brief conversations about the direction Wildebeest are running in), I’m your guy. The initial period of telling people I work ‘in property’ was soon replaced with a no-nonsense, ‘estate agent’. An effective agent is even more valuable than a good solicitor or good surveyor, owing to our ability to create relationships with both clients and buyers – something that is unique to high street agents. These relationships are founded solely in the manner in which we drive the sale forward. Hackney has been my home for the last seven years. I started out working as a property manager in west London, now I find myself a married man, father of one and manager of Stirling Ackroyd’s new Dalston office. I've been working in the industry for the last eight years covering management, lettings

Dalston, as the cultural epicentre, is the jewel in the east's crown and sales. Five years commuting to and from west London has since become a fifteen minute walk into the office where I get to sell property in the place I know and love so well. Hackney is a special borough but Dalston, as the cultural epicentre, is the jewel in the east’s crown. Bordering Highbury, De Beauvoir, Stoke Newington and Queensbridge, it reaps the benefits of flourishing property markets, whilst retaining its charm and personality. This quiet area is full of Georgian cul-de- sacs, however you are only ever a short walk from an open air food market or illicit rave. Dalston is a diverse market; first time buyers, buy-to-let investors and developers, as well as the migrating families of Highbury & Islington, all keep us busy. Young

fathers arrive from westerly boroughs safe in the knowledge that they can keep their beard and still be able to source their safewords like ‘artisan’ and ‘sourdough’. Hackney surpassed Kensington and Chelsea in the last five years, in terms of price growth, and continues to be viewed favourably on a pounds per square foot basis. Demand is on the rise and, where the market may be subdued in other parts, the simple economics mean that supply does not meet demand. For that reason we have seen as much as 12% increases in value over the last 12 months, peaking in 2013 around 25%, but continuing to rise with plenty of room for growth. To the future… post-referendum Dalston still has the air of prereferendum Dalston. In a borough that voted overwhelmingly to remain (80%), the sun continues to shine and flat whites are still reassuringly expensive. Those that opted to keep their powder dry will have no doubt come to realise that they still need somewhere to live, and those that now choose to sell are reaping the benefits of a reawakened market. 
