e've gone overboard with summer excitement in this issue. Along with much talk of bikinis and beachwear with the enormously beautiful Heidi Klum (her ownbrand swimwear collection launches this month), we have a big focus on things to do outdoors in the coming months. There's an extensive overview of London's many imminent festivals, ranging from music to comedy to food, in all areas of our urban sprawl, plus a focus on the increasingly popular Giffords Circus, which comes to west London this month. Giffords is the traditional English big top spectacular with a twist: it's all painted wagons, Victorian costumes and saucy humour, but clever, stylish and contemporary too.
13 NH_June16_EDS_LETTER.indd 13
There are also several local businesswomen in this issue – notably Lucy Enfield and Sophie Worthington of Ledbury Road's beautiful ilovegorgeous, who reveal their plans for a new collection for boys, plus stylish hair expert Louise Galvin, and gallery owner Serena Morton, whose new show features paintings inspired by the area. We also take a peek inside Missoni designer Eva Gundersen's beautiful home in Hereford Road, alongside our usual mix of fashion, beauty, interiors and local events. We hope you enjoy it. ◆

SERPENTINE PAVILION
From 1 0 Jun e Ken s i ng t o n Ga r d e ns he annual Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group T (BIG), is unveiled this month and described as an ‘unzipped wall’ that is transformed from straight line to threedimensional space. It's set to be a dramatic structure that by day houses a café and free activities and by night becomes a space for the Serpentine’s acclaimed Park Nights programme of performative works by artists, writers and musicians. This year's architecture programme features five specially commissioned summerhouses by emerging architects too.◆ ¢serpentinegalleries.org

INTRANSIT FESTIVAL
17-26 Jun e ack for its tenth year, InTRANSIT Festival is recognised as one of the B most exciting, challenging and surprising highlights of London’s arts calendar. An eclectic and experimental programme of theatre, dance, art and music that takes over the streets and iconic buildings of Kensington and Chelsea this June. Curated and produced by O’Neill/Ross, it champions work that is immediate and relevant, and commissions new art of every genre in unexpected locations. ◆ ¢ intransitfestival.co.uk

ust unveiled at the V&A is the new installation, Elytra Filament Pavilion. The outcome of four years of groundbreaking research on the integration of architecture, engineering and biomimicry principles, the project explores how biological fibre systems can be transferred to architecture. The impressive 200m² pavilion structure is inspired by lightweight construction principles found in nature – the fibrous structures of the forewing shells of flying beetles known as elytra. Elytra’s components have been fabricated by a robot

at the University of Stuttgart and assembled on site in the John Madejski Garden. The pavilion will grow and change its configuration over the course of the V&A Engineering Season in response to anonymous data on how visitors use and move under the canopy. This, as well as structural data, will be captured by real-time sensors installed in its canopy fibres. Throughout the season the data will be mapped and made available online. On 17 and 18 June, visitors will be able to see the pavilion evolve. ◆ Cromwell Road, SW7 ¢ vam.ac.uk

nyone who dreams of running away with the circus is probably dreaming of Giffords. The romance of the tradition is alive and well at in the big top at this quirky, family-run outfit, whose nomadic troupe in its hand-painted wagons present a show that takes the traditional 19th century aesthetic and reinvents it for the 21st century. Touring the country’s village greens from May until September, its only London stop is at Chiswick House, where a three-week residence is set to sell out fast. ‘Come on down to the whip-crackin’, high-tumblin’, bottle-jugglin’, horsewranglin’, wagon-trundlin’, tent-raisin’, stake-drivin’, boot-stompin’, spur-janglin’, rain dancin’, gold-rushin’, bounty-huntin’, bugle-tootin’, banjo-pluckin’, Hell-raisin’, Thanks-givin’, Giffords Circus show!’ goes the promise.

SPUR-JANGLIN’, rain-dancin’, BANJOPLUCKIN’ show ‘It’s hard to define how, but Giffords is very different from other circuses,’ says Cal McCrystal, director of this year's production, The Painted Wagon. McCrystal may be most famous as the man behind acclaimed comedy in One Man Two Guvnors – the show that became the fastest-selling play in the history of theatre, in what became for him a career-defining moment – but he says that Giffords is the job that he feels most at home with, and the one that he gets the most praise for. ‘Even when
I’m at the RSC, in the beautiful Swan Theatre, people talk to me about Giffords. And when I was asked to talk about an Ayckbourn play with Libby Puves on the radio recently, the discussion quickly led to Giffords. It’s what everyone wants to talk about.’ The show has a very strong comedy thread to it, says McCrystal, which is central to its appeal. ‘The artwork and aesthetic is very traditional but we’re not making a replica of a traditional show; it’s a new version altogether. It’s very meta too, with lots of irony and humour. It feels warm and small with an air of experimental theatre.’ The theme for 2016 is Western (previous themes have included Greek mythology, Janis Joplin’s 1960s and War and Peace), which is particularly exciting for McCrystal. ‘It’s a world that everyone has familiarity with and we can twist it in our special way.’ In addition to the acclaimed and fundamental horses, performers will

include the Ethiopian troupe from last year’s show, back with a new Chinese Pole act (‘one of the hardest circus disciplines,’ says McCrystal) and promised stars of the old west include Miss Nancy TrotterLandry, El Gifford and Tweedy the Clown. Despite working mostly in theatre, McCrystal says he feels ‘priviliged’ to work in circus, which he loves for its ‘palette’ and because he has a selfconfessed short attention span. ‘You never need to watch something go on and on in the circus,’ he says. For many years, he was involved with the Cirque de Soleil, which in budget terms is at the very other end of the circus scale from
Giffords. ‘The last show I worked on for Cirque had a budget of £66 million – but when you ask whether it’s easier to be creative with too much money or not enough, you soon realize that it’s easier to be creative with less.’ Cirque de Soleil’s epic global productions ‘are so concerned with the packaging that something is lost,’ says McCrystal. ‘I’d love to see them do something more human.’ McCrystal’s comedy style is particularly human, very physical and ‘slightly deconstructed’. He loves ‘having fun with the convention of performance – I want the audience to know that they’re looking at actors playing characters, so that they’re aware of the real person, not just the flashy juggler with his act.’ So he designs all the comedy around the actual people, never in advance. And movement’s important too – he likes a lot of activity. ‘I never have people sitting on the sofa drinking tea.’ Set up by Oxford graduate Nell Gifford

and her husband Toti more than 10 years ago and based in the Cotswolds, Gifford’s has become the circuit’s most stylish and intelligent circus and its annual residence in Chiswick attracts what McCrystal calls ‘the Glyndebourne crowd’. ‘In Chiswick, people bring picnics,’ he says. ‘Last year, one family brought a table and dining chairs. It was the campest thing I’ve ever seen.’

his summer will see W10’s Serena Morton gallery exhibiting a show by Barka that not only portrays and explores this patch of west London, it incorporates its fabric into the pieces themselves. Still in his 20s, Barka is credited with having put a name to the group of artists of which he is a part. His breakthrough exhibition was Black Romanticism in 2015, after which Black Romantics soon became the label for a ‘fly, funky and fearless’ group defined by The Guardian as ‘a new wave of young black artists committed to painting, filming and saluting the style of black Britons.’ Barka’s work focuses on documenting the experience of black people within the contemporary landscape of London. The show’s title, Sugar and Water, alludes to the Caribbean and its role in sugar trade, but also to the mass migration of people across the Atlantic to Britain. The show treats the repercussions of both in the UK. Notting Hill is of course embedded in the hearts of London’s Afro-Caribbean community, who established a presence in the borough during the 1950s. It is synonymous to many with carnival and celebration, but this influx was not without early difficulties, including the riots in 1958. The borough is the focus of this exhibition, with many aesthetic themes explored: fashion to architecture, Georgian interiors to present-day
FAMILIAR locations ARE SHOWN in a fresh LIGHT approaches to urban planning. But the cultural exchange of the Afro-Caribbean community and its effects on the area are integral, reflecting the artist’s feelings about himself. ‘Being London born and bred, there are elements from my heritage mixed with British ideals, a somewhat hybrid existence.’
Barka, Ginger Beer 2016, Mix Media on Glass
Barka’s work is figurative but multilayered. Not only is Sugar and Water a cultural exploration, it highlights the aesthetic beauty of its context. The bright colours of Notting Hill’s terraced townhouses are amplified, and familiar locations are shown in a fresh light. Even without the cultural patchwork it picks at, Sugar and Water’s variety of perspectives and richness of texture and colour ensure that, while avoiding the saccharine, it provides undiluted stimulation. u
Barka, Sister Sister 2015, Mix Media on Glass.
While Sugar and Water highlights significant moments in the construct of the black British identity and takes account of 20th-century sub-cultures – punks, skinheads, rude boys – Barka stresses that it is ‘a celebration of the now’. This is ingrained in the media he uses, gathering byproducts of the gentrification that eddies around the city, another contemporary issue with a long history. ‘I primarily paint on discarded glass windows and doors, symbolic of the disposable nature of change. The very frames and fittings talk to the lived-in London experience.’

PARTY ON Our round up of London’s top summer festivals Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n Illustration Phil Couzens

ike strawberries and cream, summer and festivals come hand in hand. But, while many of us long for hazy weekend parties, others can’t think of anything worse. With no electricity, little signal and (thank you British summer) a lot of mud and rain, festivals can be more than a tad unbearable. Thankfully, for die-hard city kids, the number of festivals inside London is high. So high, in fact, that you really don’t need to leave home to get your fix. To prove our point, here’s a roundup of this year’s best...
BARCLAYCARD BRITISH SUMMER TIME
1~10 July Hyd e Park Please try and find a lineup better this because I’m pretty sure no other festival in London has got it so sweet. Taking place over two weeks, headliners include Stevie Wonder, Florence and the Machine and Carole King. The real gems,

however, are hidden in the small print: Pharrell Williams, Corrine Bailey Rae and Mystery Jets will all be taking to the stage. Inside the gates you’ll also find fairground rides, gourmet street food vans and live comedy acts. Having been nominated for five festival awards last year (including the coveted award for best toilets) you’re guaranteed a proper festival experience with your bed just a tube ride away. An annual must. ◆ West Carriage Drive, W2; bst-hydepark.com
WIRELESS
8~10 July Fin sbury Park Now in its 11th year, Wireless is well-established and in spite of the fact that it’s moved from central to the north, acts remain A-lister: Calvin Harris, Craig David and The 1975 will all be performing. It’s this lineup of big names that makes Wireless the festival for anyone who loves chart music but can’t face a grimy weekend away. Alongside the more mainstream acts, organisers have got plenty

of up-and-coming talent on the bill and although none will be truly alternative, they do give this event a bit of depth. While the pop, dance and urban festival will give you the opportunity to tick off many a chart favourite, it is, more than anything else, a party for people who know how to let loose. ◆ Endymion Road, N4; wirelessfestival.co.uk
THE BALHAM COMEDY FESTIVAL

humour of Metro columnist Richard Herring to the pun-loving, manic-haired, comedy giant Milton Jones – will come to Balham. Held in seminal venue, The Bedford, this comedy festival takes your favourite famous acts away from the big lights of television and puts them back in their natural habitat: the UK’s small stand-up comedy bars. It’s this that makes The Balham Comedy Festival truly special. Each intimate show makes ad-lib possible and gives the comic a chance to

Back for its fourth year running, this long weekend promises punters a taste of all the best world class craft with over 30 independent breweries carefully selected to set up shop here by the beer-obsessed organisers. With over 250 beers ready for tasting, you are pretty much guaranteed to find yourself your dream brew. BBC GOOD FOOD
27~29 August Hampton Court Palace Organised by Britain’s number one food media brand, this is must for all of those who love to cook and eat. In the same way that the team behind BBC Good Food bring the best chefs and coolest small artisan producers together at their indoor shows, this outdoor festival sees names such as Paul Hollywood and Michel Roux Jr alongside small artisan producers. It’s this clever mashup of the known and unknown that makes this weekend exciting. Indeed, while the famous chefs will be spilling their secrets on the Interview Stage, others will be teaching you how cook just like them in the Summer Theatre Kitchen. All held in the historical grounds of Hampton Court Palace, the ticket includes entrance to the Henry VIII’s old home so you can go and explore. A lovely way to spend the August bank holiday with your family. u East Molesey, KT8; bbcgoodfoodfestival.com

here’s nothing more frustrating than having a holiday wardrobe that doesn’t work in the city,” says Annie Pollett of Iris, the boutique that hits the spot in its three London locations. From its origins in Queens Park, the boutique soon expanded to Chiswick and Battersea, where its edit of brands including ACNE, American Vintage, Duffy, BA&SH, plus diffusion lines by Isabel Marant and Vanessa Bruno hits the spot among local womenfolk. Founders Pollett and Sarah Claassen were friends who had identified a lack of boutiques offering grown-up, wearable fashion, and in 2004 they opened Iris. Last year, they launched their own label, By Iris, and the new summer collection is designed to work in multiple situations. “We focused on creating pieces that work equally well on the beach or at a Sunday lunch in town,” they say. The kaftan dress, for instance, fits the bill perfectly and is the ideal summer wardrobe addition. Equally wearable are the broderie anglaise top, which looks amazing with jeans or shorts on holiday, and the broderie anglaise dress, says Sarah. “Accessories are a highlight of the collection with lovely stripey espadrilles for everyday, and the bronze gladiator sandals have been hugely popular.” u

COSTUME DRAMA Model and designer Heidi Klum has launched her own brand of swimwear. Absolutely meets her Interview Pendle Harte
H
eidi Klum is sitting under a spotlight in the Soho Hotel surrounded by several rails full of bikinis. She is in London – briefly – to launch Heidi Klum Swim, an extension of her Heidi Klum Intimates brand, and she is radiating enthusiasm. In fact she is simply radiating – her big smile, open face and winning charm make her instantly likeable. Not for Heidi the frosty princess manner. Her entourage, however, is a different story. We have been firmly instructed not to veer the slightest bit away from the subject we are here to discuss, which is her new swimwear range. Klum may be German by birth, and broadcast weekly on German television’s huge hit Germany’s Next Top Model, but she lives and works in LA and sounds almost entirely American, apart from occasional turns of phrase. When she says swimwear, she means bikinis – and by that she really means bikini bottoms,
because she herself has little interest in wearing a top part. But swimwear, as Klum discovered, is almost as technical as lingerie, which she has been designing for some time. ‘Yes, a bra is just like a phone! There’s so much technology. Whether it’s a flexible underwire or a half underwire, there’s always a new invention. And the pads too. Did you know we make memory foam bras?’ So for the new swimwear collection, the technical details were just as important as the design. Starting with the hardwear, which Klum has strong opinions about: it mustn’t rust, or be too brash. ‘Nobody wants a huge H on their back!’ And the fabric has to be just right. ‘You need to make sure they don’t fall off or start getting weird when they’re wet. They all have to be tested.’ Klum is one of the world’s highest earning models. Despite having featured on the covers of several editions of Vogue and worked as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, she hasn’t forgotten that she started out as a catalogue model. ‘People used to say

FASHION / PROFILE
I’d never be anything else, so when I got my first French Vogue cover it made me feel an inch taller.’ She counts working with photographer Peter Lindbergh among her career highs, and cites ‘jobs that make me overcome my fears’ as her favourites. ‘When I shoot Germany’s Next Top Model it’s a live show in an arena full of 15,000 people and I have to talk for three hours. It’s terrifying. I’m trying to have fun but I’m scared – we have people like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga sitting on the sofa and I have to interview them and I have people shouting in my ear about commercial breaks, and millions of people watching at home. It’s nerve-wracking.’ The show is filmed in LA, as a concession to Klum’s family commitments; she has four children at school there. ‘So I go to Germany and cast the girls, then I take them to Los Angeles and film it there and I’m home at the end of the day.’
Casting young models must be a tough job. Can she tell immediately who’s in and who’s out? ‘ Yes, you can see who’s got it. But even though there are so many beautiful girls, not all of them can perform in front of a camera or step into a role. You have to be able to perform.’ It’s a well-trodden path from modeling to designing, but Klum is careful not to design just with herself in mind. ‘If I did it would probably be just bottoms, not tops! I mean I’m more of an itsy bity teeny weeny girl myself and my top comes off on the beach. I’m not a big fan of tan lines. So I try to think about the girl who wants more coverage. I know that a lot of girls like push-up – I don’t like that, but I have to think about what other girls want to wear. And I have the hardest time with one-pieces, because I never wear those myself.’ With 2,000 stockists around the world, there are also the different markets to consider. ‘When you go to the
39 NH_June16_HEIDI KLUM.indd 39
beach in Australia it’s a very different look from anywhere else. Everyone’s in long sleeves and hats with flaps down the back – and then in St Barts everyone has hardly anything on.’ On the beach, of course, Klum wears her own designs – ‘I like the tropical, fun ones because I’m often on an island, shooting something’ – and off the beach, she likes to ‘have fun with fashion’. Though as she admits, this means that ‘people sometimes hammer me for my choices. I wore a big Zac Posen gown to collect my Bambi award and I felt like Grace Kelly.’ But usually she likes to wear pieces by the Olsen twins – ‘they do a great job, they go to the fabric shows, just like how I do my stuff.’ ◆ Heidi Klum Swim is available at House of Fraser, John Lewis and online at Figleaves and ASOS as well as at select boutiques nationwide. Prices range from £43-£145

waxing is often presented maybe not as an actively pleasureable activity but certainly as a light-hearted and fun one. We are used to being offered blueberry or chocolate, as if hair removal were a muffin. But until now this (admit it) fairly painful form of hair removal has always taken place in standard clinical style waxing surroundings, however hard they are pushing the fun element. However, Ministry of Waxing has brought it out of the spa and into the open with a new waxing cafe, as if to highlight quite how fun and even sociable waxing can be. On the ground floor, A Wanted Man is all espresso and delicious brunchy dishes, while upstairs is entirely dedicated to hair removal and eyebrow threading, all of it decorated on a Wild West theme. We weren't sure what it was all supposed to mean, but precluding my wax with a high class flat white and some crispy sourdough toast was a great way to go about the ordeal. To add to the fun, they are promising mulled wine flavoured wax for Christmas – probably with actual mulled wine downstairs – but we'll be returning well before that. u

Slice the burger bus in half and spread with butter. Heat a pan and sear the cut sides of the buns.
In a saucepan, heat the milk and the stock together. In another saucepan, melt the butter over a medium heat, add the flour and cook for 2–3 minutes. When the mixture starts to turn brown, begin adding the milk and stock very slowly until you get a really silky-smooth mix. This will take approximately 10 minutes.

4 To make the batter, simply whisk all the ingredients together. 5 Heat the oil in a wok or in a deep-fat fryer to 170°c. Dip the shaped potato patties in the chickpea batter and deep fry for 2-3 minutes until golden in colour. Remove and drain on kitchen paper. 6 Spread the chutney on the bottom half of the bun, arrange the cucumber, tomato and lettuce on top and add the potato patties. Cover with the top of the bun and serve with more green coriander chutney and tomato ketchup on the side.

If they are a little soft, pop them on a tray in the freezer to firm up for 30 minutes. 6 Place the beaten egg and the breadcrumbs into two separate bowls. Dip the croquetas first into the beaten egg and then into the breadcrumbs.
3 Add the cheese to the mixture slowly, then add the spinach and stir constantly until it is well combined. Season with salt, pepper and a grating of nutmeg.
7 Heat the oil to 180°C (350°F) and fry the croquetas for around 2 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels, then eat straight away.

Serves 4 fter testing various marinades for lamb and mutton, Adi, one A of our managers, described what we came up with as “Hara bhara,” which translates as “fresh and green” in Hindi. I love that description, so we called it that on the menu. It’s a very herby marinade with a subtle spice that works really well with the smoky aubergine and is nicely cut by the yoghurt.

ith wonderful interiors and a 45ft west-facing private garden, this two-bedroom duplex forms part of an immaculate stucco-fronted house in Hereford Road, W2. The apartment has been extended and refurbished with great attention to detail by designer Eva Gundersen, who has worked extensively for Italian brand Missoni. Her close work with Rosita Missoni, who together with her husband Ottavio is the founding influence behind

Missoni's colourful, dynamic and playful aesthetic, has exposed Gundersen to the Missoni matriarch's tastes for colour, pattern and textiles. It was Rosita who launched Missoni Home after passing responsibility for the womenswear collections to her daughter but then finding retirement boring. Missoni Home was an extension of her own home, which she had always dressed in Missoni fabrics, and in 1997 she launched the first collection of cushions, throws, rugs and ottomans. The current exhibition at the Fashion and Textile museum showcases the fashion house's long-standing relationship with wool and knitted pieces – and Gundersen's own home, too, reveals a love of fabric and pattern. Set against a muted backdrop of white walls and oak floors, her interior is full of colour and energy, fusing contemporary pieces with midcentury classics, bold artworks and plants in a well-designed, light-filled space. The apartment measures approximately 1,100 sq ft internally, and is accessed via its own front door at garden level. There is a modernised kitchen at the front, with a sash window and a sliding serving hatch. This leads in turn to a reception room, with a dining area and study in the

n import from America and ever-popular with celebs, the classic but utterly cute design of Salt-water Sandals specially made for toddlers is a winwin. Eschewing the glittery, embellished and overwrought designs so often offered to kids these days, these plain and simple summer shoes remain stylish while being completely functional. Moulded for Baby’s growing feet with built-in arch support, the ace in the Salt-water sleeve is that these sandals can get wet – in fact, getting wet is good for them and allows them to mould to the shape of the foot, so littles have the allclear to splash around.

BUSINESS Sophie Worthington and Lucy Enfield of ilovegorgeous talk sell-out sales, crowdfunding and launching a boys’ collection Interview Helen Baron
HB: Starting a business is tough especially with kids to take care of. What gave you the impetus to start ilovegorgeous? What made you think you could make it work? SW: When we started ilovegorgeous in 2006 we had no ambition beyond the first collection. We were keen to have a creative outlet and to make the kind of clothes for our children that we loved but we absolutely didn’t envision then how big it would become. Between us we have six children so we could involve them in all aspects of the business from brainstorming ideas to modelling the early collections. Our driving force was our passion for fashion rather than a conviction that we could make it work; that only came with time and a proven track record. We were lucky enough to have our first wholesale collection snapped up by Selfridges and from there our business has grown organically every year. HB: What were the early years like? SW: The early years were fun and stressful in equal measure. We are enormously proud of what we have achieved, not least because neither of us were businesswomen, we just loved what we were doing and kept on doing

the rewards were rapid and significant. Sell-out home sales and early entry in department stores such as Selfridges and Barneys in New York meant that we kept going. Starting a business is like pushing a boulder up hill – you have to be very determined and dogged and above all, ignore anyone who tells you not to do it.

HB: What was your vision for the brand? Is there something that makes ilovegorgeous different to other labels? LE: We wanted to make clothes that we loved. We took the production values and attention to detail of adult fashion and applied them to the childrenswear market. We were not (and are not) afraid to use unusual fabrics, prints details and trims. We wanted children to fall in love with our clothes and to feel special in them. The aim of an ilovegorgeous outfit is to transform the wearer and make them stand out from the crowd. We want our clothes to be loved, remembered and handed on from generation to generation. HB: How did/do the founders divide the work? And are there ever arguments over direction etc? SW: Partnerships are notoriously difficult but we see it as an asset. The plus side of

a partnership is that you always have a sounding board and a second opinion. You never operate alone and we think that women are particularly good at working collaboratively. We both work on the designs but as the business has grown Lucy has assumed the role of creative director while I am managing director. We confer on most things but also trust each other to make the right decisions in our own right. We are fortunate in that we both have a similar aesthetic and tend to agree on strategic approach. Ten years on there have been no fights or falling-outs... HB: Was there a moment or event that tipped things and helped ilovegorgeous to feel more established as a business? LE: Absolutely! There have been several significant moments that have kept us going, especially in those precarious early days – when our first collection sold out, when Selfridges bought our first wholesale collection and we took
on an agent. The day we raised our first round of equity funding to open the Notting Hill shop and launch our first e-commerce site. Those were heady days with turnover doubling annually as we scrabbled to keep up and create an infrastructure to support the success. HB: What's the biggest change the business has witnessed/undergone – and the biggest challenge you've faced? LE: The biggest challenge was probably learning to run a multimillion pound business, to manage our finances effectively and to build the infrastructure and supporting team that is so crucial. The transformation from a small kitchentable business to a limited company employing 24 people carries with it hard lessons, but many a triumph as well.
87 NH_June16_I LOVE GORGEOUS.indd 87
HB: Tell us about the new crowdfunding initiative… SW: After 10 years of making beautiful clothes for gorgeous girls we are now ready to start making them for boys too. We asked our customers if it was something they would want, and the answer was a resounding yes. We have always placed huge importance on listening to our customers, making sure they are considered in all of our strategic decisions as a business. We thought about the traditional ways of raising finance to support the launch of the boys’ collection, such as approaching venture capitalists, something we have done successfully before, but were excited at the possibility of giving our customers the opportunity to have a slice of the action and decided to crowdfund instead. HB: What's the greatest lesson running a business has taught you? SW: Never take your eye off the end goal, keep on going even when the going gets tough, trust yourself but above all, trust other people and build an infrastructure of experienced people to support your vision. You need vision, tenacity and a great team; if you have all of three then the rest will fall into place. @ilovegorgeousuk ilovegorgeous.co.uk

t’s exam period. A testing time for pupils and parents alike. But the one thing our children don’t need is any more pressure from us. Britain’s top private schools have reported an alarming rise in exam stress among pupils over the past five years — much of it caused by pressure from anxious parents. According to a survey by the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), which represents the country’s most famous schools including Eton, Harrow and Westminster, 56% of heads polled said that pressure from home to get high grades was the biggest cause of exam-related stress. Nearly all head teachers (97%) said they were now asking parents into advice sessions and offering parenting classes on how to deal with the issue amid concerns that youngsters are buckling under the pressure. “Today’s teenagers are increasingly overwhelmed by the pressures they feel to succeed in life. There is no doubt that we — parents, teachers, friends — must come to their assistance,” Chris King, headmaster of Leicester Grammar School Trust and chairman of the HMC. “Parents — and I am one of them — need to keep a sense of perspective and try not to transmit our anxieties onto our children. The survey reveals that more than three quarters of schools are calling in therapists and all are offering counselling within school. Three-quarters offer mindfulness sessions and nearly half have laid on yoga classes. At Queen Anne’s, an independent girls’ boarding school in Caversham, Berkshire, pupils have been attending de-stressing workshops for the past year– and their grades in their mock

GCSEs have gone up by up to two grades as a result. Pupils have been taught techniques such as deep breathing to calm themselves as well as learning how proper revision and planning can reduce the risk of panic during an exam. “Parents often inadvertently make their children more stressed,” says headmistress Julia Harrington. “They need a certain amount of stress to do well, but too much turns into anxiety, which floods the brain and makes them feel hopeless.” So what can parents do to help? Don’t take over. The most common complaint from teenagers, says Eileen Tracy, author of The Student’s Guide to Exam Success, is that parents – mainly mothers – are too involved and this makes them anxious and fearful of disappointing them. Be a non-intrusive, supportive
89 CHIS_June16_Education.indd 89
presence. Offer tea, toast and sympathy. Don’t nag them. Even seemingly anodyne comments can be corrosive. “Every time a stressed-out mother says, ‘Shouldn’t you be revising?’ the student gets a shot of adrenaline, which doesn’t make them want to work,” says Tracy. Avoid barbed comments. (“What, on instagram again?”), says Janey Downshire, from Teenagers Translated. Pass the responsibility back to them. “I tell my children that I don’t want them to regret not working hard enough. Ask what they would like from you. Be specific when you offer help. “Tell me three things I can do for you,” says Dr Carina Eriksen, a consultant psychologist who works in schools. “That way you are promoting a collaborative approach.” Don’t banish them to their bedroom for hours. Let them come home from school, let off steam and eat something nutritious. “Never believe a teenager until they’ve recharged their blood sugar levels,” advises Bernard Trafford, headmaster of the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle. He encourages his pupils to work for no more than an hour at a time. After this, “they need to move, stretch their legs, have a drink”. Following a few hours revising, they need fresh air: “Healthy mind in healthy body” is more important than ever at this time. Don’t ban them from the computer, says Harrington. “They might not be working but the chances are they are. The exam system has changed a lot — there is much more analysis and deep thinking now rather than rote learning of facts.” Don’t tell them their future depends on this exam. “It’s a parent’s job to give the wider picture: life doesn’t hang on any exam,” says Tracy.

n stepping inside our luxury villa it is impossible not to let a sense of serenity and peace wash over me. As it turns out, this is exactly what The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is all about. Located a mere 11 km from the airport, the hotel consists of a 245-room resort located on 20 acres of private beachfront encircling a beautiful lagoon of deepest blue. Of the nearly 250 rooms on offer, 31 are suites and 42 are Club Level rooms but the real jewels in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s crown are the 23 stunning seafront villas. These each boast three bedrooms, a private pool, beach access and a 24-hour butler service ready to cater to your every whim. The interiors are inspired by 60s architecture, with vibrant colours, wood panelling and exposed beams. There is also a generous dollop of South American and Mediterranean influence which melds together to create a uniquely engaging environment. Although inspired by ‘60s cool, there is nothing old fashioned about the facilities; the entire villa is kitted out
with state-of-the art amenities designed to make a guest’s stay as relaxing as possible. Their only drawback? You may never want to leave. After wandering around for a good fifteen minutes, fiddling with airconditioning settings and leaping onto one of the softest beds I have ever encountered, I finally turn my attention to the view. From some parts of the resort, guests can see the Arabian Gulf; from our villa we are treated to a fabulous, unrestricted view of picturesque Manama Bay. The most striking characteristic of the villas, however is their tranquillity. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the gardens, they feel secluded without being isolated and offer the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life. I am also struck by the blend of sophisticated elegance and laid-back, beachy vibes in the design. Access to the water is also key. The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures attracting holidaymakers year-round. So, being able to dip into the crystal

waters of the lagoon at any time is a luxury that cannot be overstated and one that is valued highly by visitors to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. When I am finally able to tear myself away from the villa, I start to explore the resort. Aside from the lovely decor and the many restaurants (which I will expand on later), I am drawn to The Ritz-Carlton Spa. A reason to stay all on its own, the spa is a haven offering relaxing treatments and signature products to leave guests refreshed and restored. I am particularly impressed by the thalassotherapy pool, a large, warm, mineral-rich pool with hydrotherapy jets to ease away aches and pains, allowing visitors to emerge revitalised and oh-sorelaxed. There is also the usual spa offering of massages and beauty treatments but all with that specific Ritz-Carlton finish that seems to add a sheen of luxury and of going the extra mile. For anyone wishing to exert a little energy, there is a fully stocked gym and also beachfront tennis courts and an air-conditioned indoor squash court. I am even able to indulge in a little retail therapy in the shopping arcade as I wander.
Having worked up an appetite, I have a serious decision to make; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and bars on offer and all sound irresistible. La Med lays on a fabulously lavish buffet, while The Gourmet Lounge specialises in Old World classics with decor inspired by La Belle Epoque - a truly regal dining experience. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic then Nirvana is for you; Executive Chef Mahipal Singh creates tantalising dishes complemented by the rich, sultry decor all set to the live music of the ‘Santoor’. Primavera serves up excellent Italian while Plums is the place

to go for a really good steak. Lighter bites are available from La Plage, the resort’s poolside restaurant (perfect for a lazy lunch with plenty of wine) and from Thai Lounge. A quintessential afternoon tea can be had at The Lobby Lounge but my personal favourite is the Burlington Club where guests can stop for a cocktail and a fine Cuban cigar before or after dinner. Another aspect of the hotel that makes it a destination for travellers is the Club Level. This is designed to create the feeling of a ‘hotel within a hotel’, to extend an extra level of exclusivity, comfort and personalized service. It is located on two dedicated floors to ensure privacy and offers a separate lounge area with complimentary food and drink throughout the day. It is a wrench to leave at the end of my stay as weeks could be spent here without ever needing (or wanting) to venture out of the resort. The amenable staff, glorious design and excellent facilities without a doubt put The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain among the leading luxury hotels in the world.

I
moved to the W2 side of Notting Hill in the early 80s, although it was known as Bayswater back then. It’s been fascinating to see the transformation of the area over that time; houses were bought and sold in the ten’s of thousands rather than in millions. It’s wealthier neighbour Holland Park had always been popular and it was not long before the attributes of Notting Hill, with the fast links to the West End via the Central Line increased its standing as a place to live. Although some of the cherished local restaurants, shops and personalities have disappeared over the years, there are still plenty of gems that I hope will never fade away, especially the Churchill Arms on Kensington Church Street, my first taste of Thai food and the best pint of London Pride in RBKC. I began my career in St Johns Wood and then moved to the Hyde Park Estate, but it wasn’t long before I wanted to work in the area I knew and loved best. Notting Hill is a loose description of an area and has grown over time, it
It gives me so much joy to see so many familiar faces, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be
covers so many local hubs each with their own identity. From the classic stucco fronted houses overlooking communal gardens, to the Artesian Village with its grid of charming magnolia lined streets, to All Saints Road and east to Queensway. From my office in Kensington Park Road I’m walking the same streets I did some 30 years ago and it gives me such joy to see so many familiar faces. There’s nowhere else I'd rather be. Since the recent increases in SDLT, the cost of acquiring a property in a prime area has obviously had an effect on values. The upside of this is that the market is more transparent than ever. Pure investment is no longer the chief driver, as we are seeing more
traditional motives from our buyers. Given everything that Cameron and Osborne have thrown at this industry in the last year, referendums included, we are faring okay. Prices are down on the peak (7% to 10% by most measures) and volume is down 10% (possibly 15%), which has an effect on business. But stock levels are excellent, sellers have readjusted (on the whole) and buyers are keen to capitalise on the extraordinary finance deals available. The smarter buying agents are encouraging their clients to buy pre-Brexit, it’s all a question of readjustment and whether you want to take a punt on securing a pre-referendum, or get something on the bounce (if and when). Which reminds me of what a client said to me recently: ‘’If only I bought the flat above me in summer 2009!’’. Perhaps the old adage “be brave when others are fearful” has never been truer? Notting Hill will continue to prosper, it always has and it always will, and I look forward to many years of selling property in this very special part of the world. ◆

I was giving career advice to a local resident’s daughter who was interested in moving into estate agency. This led to me selling their family home and helping them downsize to a lovely flat in the area. By spending some time and getting to know them, I helped them make a huge decision that genuinely changed their lives.

Flat Sales Negotiator Strutt & Parker, Kensington atience and pricing are the key. Over recent months we have all read the newspapers saying that property sales are taking that much longer to come to fruition due to certain factors such as stamp duty, elections and the possible impact of ‘Brexit’. On the contrary, buyers who are out viewing are on the whole very focused and some see buying
P
Patience and a sensible price will bring results in this market now as an ‘opportunity’ before the expected rally post-EU Referendum. A recent sale we made just south of Kensington High Street is a prime example of this. There was a lot of interest and viewings as our client asked for a sensible price and the marketing strategy resulted with us achieving the asking price. The sale did take longer than it would have in the height of the market (first quarter of 2014), however the important point we made here was to highlight how there are buyers out there for properties which are sensibly priced. Patience and a sensible price will bring results in this market. ◆

asking price, and in the next viewing the house was let to a family relocating within the area on a long term tenancy. With the usual busy house market about to take off, our clients have found that our pre tenancy input works extremely well. Recently we have noticed that the quality of the finish is almost preferable to having more space, so appearance and pricing really are key! ◆

VILLAGE LIFE Do you dream of village living?
N
This is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire To identify the modern ‘good lifers’ Strutt & Parker categorised those moving to villages into different types. These include ‘the Downtons’ who are wealthy families who escape the city for a prime village house, and ‘Rusticarians’. These are young entrepreneurs who home work from a broadband bungalow or cyber cottage. And finally we
ew research shows the village is back in fashion as more of us turn our backs on the grit of urban survival. Mention villages to most Londoners and they may assume you’re talking about one of the capital’s urban ersatz. But according to research from Strutt & Parker, a fifth of the home movers want to live in a real village, away from the city. Escaping city life and embracing the country is a trend created by both high house prices in urban areas as well as the opportunities presented by home working, not to mention a desire to don wellies and waxed jackets. Other reasons, the research highlights, include lower living costs, a healthier lifestyle, more privacy and being closer to family and friends.

PROPERTY / RURAL RETREAT have the ‘rural newbies’; families looking for somewhere to raise their children. Those with a bucolic bent also want, outstanding countryside views (or sea views), walking trails, sporting facilities, cycling or biking trails and equestrian facilities, the research shows. They’re clearly a hard bunch to please. For Strutt & Parker it is simple – a community of between 3,000 and 10,000 houses. But for the vast majority of London families shipping out, close proximity to a train station is going to be essential. Here are three villages that come close pastoral perfection.
The Old Forge, Thruxton £575,000
GREAT SHELFORD
his is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire but who also need to commute back to the City. It’s an hour and 20 minutes from Liverpool Street to Shelford station, which makes it just about commutable. The village’s treats include pubs, restaurants, banks, cycle shops, a deli, bakery and garden centre. What can you buy there? Try this five bedroom, high-spec house with a double garage and garden. It’s for sale with Strutt & Parker at £1,495,000 01223 459502.

THRUXTON
hruxton is an ancient village close to the A303 on which you’ll drive to Andover train station. From there trains can be caught to London Waterloo which takes an hour and 20 minutes. The village has a green, two pubs, a church, community hall and a school. A garden centre is scheduled to open soon, and there’s a petrol station cum farm shop in Weyhill, the next village along. What can you buy there? A four

SUTTON COURTENAY
his ravishingly beautiful village sits on the River Thames between Oxford and Didcot and is renowned as the home of Herbert Asquith, the prime minister who took Britain in the First World War. The village has a school, a village hall, cricket and football pitches and three pubs including a popular gastro pub. London is just 45 minutes away via Didcot, which is a short drive from the village. What can you buy there? This plot of land, which is on the market for £325,000, has planning permission for a five bedroom home almost on the water’s edge of the Thames. The Thames bimbles past the wonderful 1.4-acre plot. PROPERTY / DEVELOPMENTS NIGEL LEWIS
NEW HOMES R EG E N E RAT I O N
RADICAL MAKEOVERS?
he capital’s race to build more T homes is having an unexpected result for some of its less predictable neighbourhoods, says Nigel Lewis. High prices and fewer homes for sale in the most desirable parts of London mean areas that have been less fashionable for years, are getting makeovers and – more importantly for London’s accommodationstarved residents – new homes. Areas that buyers might have previously struck off their wish lists are now go-to areas. And the developers’ cranes are following suit, crowding once sleepy skylines with their one-legged swingers. Here we look at some of the areas being upgraded with both regeneration cash as well as new, gleaming apartments developments.
SOUTH: ELEPHANT & CASTLE
here were some tentative signs of regeneration in and around Elephant and Castle during the mid-noughties when an expensive improvement programme was announced and several high-profile new homes developments were built. But after these were completed, the recession put a stop to any new money coming in. It’s all now picking up again with £3 billion earmarked for the area. As well as a more pedestrianfriendly road layout, there are several new developments under construction including Elephant Park, a former council estate. It is to include a new shopping precinct, gardens, and 2,500 sustainable homes. Developer Lendlease has just launched its latest phase called Highwood Gardens, which comprises 307 homes surrounded by attractive courtyard gardens designed by leading landscape architects, Gillespies. The new apartments at Highwood Gardens are available from £540,000. For more information, call 020 3675 9955 or visit www.elephantpark.co.uk. u

CENTRAL: SOHO SQUARE
ou might assume Soho and regeneration wouldn’t go together given its West End location, but only recently has the area’s sleazier reputation begun to wear off – much to the horror of fans such as Steven Fry and Marc Almond, who want to stop what they call its sanitisation. The arguments over Soho centre around its retail makeover and the loss of the small, independent shops that make it so unique and, consequently, apartment developers are treading carefully. Rather than shiny new blocks, older properties are being upgraded. The most recent example is the Duke of Portland’s former townhouse on Soho Square. Built during the late 17th century, this Grade II listed property is now called 10, Soho Square, a development by Oakmayne Bespoke where just one apartment is left to purchase for £4.75 million. FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market
ROTTEN PLACE TO BUY?
t’s four decades since punk spilled spitting and screaming onto our TV screen and the Sex Pistols’ released their debut single, Anarchy in the UK. Original band members Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock shocked TV interviewers and caused mayhem at concerts. But it didn’t last long. After touring the US, Rotten – real name John Lydon – left the band in 1978 and retreated to a house he’d just bought in Chelsea. Lydon, now 60, sold the five-floor property in 1981 when he moved to New York, and the building has since been divided up into two apartments, with a blue plaque outside to celebrate his time there. Back then the apartment on Gunter Grove had smoke-stained walls and a low-slung futon style couch, but it’s since had a makeover and is yours to rent for £1,295 a week. u Savills 0207 578 9020 www.savills.co.uk

nominated for a Grammy award. But after nine years together the band broke up, blaming internal conflicts. The singer has been ploughing his own furrow since then and has a new solo album out next month These People - with songs tackling topics such as the war in Syria, the Arab Spring uprisings and the death of a close friend. But it all started at Vernon Yard Recordings, an independent label owned by Virgin Records based in Notting Hill. The building was converted into houses, where a four bedroom mews house is now up for sale at £4.5m. u Domus Nova 0207 727 1717 www.domusnova.com

ownton character Sarah Bunting played by Daisy Lewis was an idealistic teacher keen on bringing social justice to the world in series four and five. And it’s not the first time she has played feisty female characters. Before joining the period drama, she had parts in Doctor Who and After You’ve Gone, but has also produced movies including a short film starring Charles Dance. The actress also has an eye for property; she shared a penthouse flat with her brother in Pimlico before moving into her own pad, an interest that evidently runs in the family as her father John is chairman of the Groucho Club and part owns the Sloane Square hotel. The Lewis siblings’ flat is now up for sale at £2.25m. The three bedroom property in Warwick Square has views across the capital. u Jackson-Stops 0207 828 4050 www.jackson-stops.co.uk

SCENE OF A HITCHCOCK HOUSING DRAMA
aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock got his first shot at directing in 1922 with the film Number 13. This and many of his early films were shot at Gainsborough Studios. However, at the start of WW2 the building’s chimney was deemed a liability during air raids, and the studio was sold in 1949. After starting life as a power station, then going into the movie business, the building in Hoxton has also been used as a whisky store, housed theatre productions, and a fashion show by Alexander McQueen. Much of it was demolished in 2002 and flats were built on the site, but as a nod to its cinematic past, you’ll find a huge sculpture of Hitchock’s head in the centre of the four apartment blocks.
